There will be a 20-minute intermission. Artists’ statement We’ve been preparing for this show since we were born. We all, each and every one us, has been preparing and creating since our inception. The Music of the Mind is more than a song or the beautiful music the mind makes when it functions; it is the moment of discovery; what happens to the brain when we each learn something for the first time. It is expansive and focused; it starts from a spark; grows and is nurtured and then starts over again. Each of us has a creative spark inside of us: be we artists, scientists, engineers, mothers or firefighters. As we create, learn and grow, our minds expand and we connect more and more with the world around us. If we’re paying attention, the possibilities are limitless. A favorite idea we kept returning to while working on the show is that the universe is inside our mind; continually expanding and contracting with new sparks and connections. We were also inspired by the concept that the evolution of our species is inextricably linked to creativity and imagination; that we use our imagination and creative, expansive brains, (or the universe inside our minds), to discover solutions to complex problems. It is how we survive and evolve. In light of recent political events, it is more important than ever for us to realize the power within ourselves, and the music of our minds, to bring about evolution and positive change. The time has come for us to fuel this flame. It all starts with a spark.
Notes about the program The four sections of The Music of the Mind represent our creative process and the way we believe an idea is born and manifests itself. We imagine the sections as four concentric circles, like a ripple effect. Beginning with the self, or spark, and the inception of an idea. Next, the family, or foundation, that fosters the seed and helps it grow. Followed by community and collaboration, where the flame is fanned and picks up momentum. Finally, global, or the big picture, where the idea reaches its zenith, takes on a life of its own and moves into the future. Each section is organized much the same way, with repeating themes and concepts building upon one another, culminating in a way that will, hopefully, encourage the audience to take this idea and ‘pass it on’. We thank you for spending your evening with us.
