Corporate Sponsor Story

In 1957, Val and Zena Weiler operated the Campus Fruit Market in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was clear to them that their business would soon be eclipsed by the large supermarkets springing up across Lincoln. The landmark which had stood for a dozen years had to go. In its place, armed with three dozen pizza pans, a recipe that had been in Mrs. Weiler’s family for years, and a generous amount of trepidation, they decided to open a pizza business. They took in $60 their first day, and as the restaurant’s reputation grew, patrons began to gather and watch through the window as the pizzas were made. Patrons would stand in line for an hour or more to sample the pizza and pasta specialties created in the original restaurant.

In 1971, the Messineo and Alesio families purchased Valentino’s and soon carefully formulated plans to expand into additional locations. Today, Valentino’s has expanded to 38 restaurant locations throughout Nebraska.

Valentino’s success began with those wonderful family recipes that were passed on when the business changed hands in 1971. However, there’s more than recipes to this story. The highest quality food, reasonable prices, immaculately clean and comfortable restaurants, genuinely friendly service, and a written corporate creed which says that “community service is as important as the quality of the food,” have helped keep Val’s tremendously popular.

DON & MYRA WILHITE

We are impressed with the diversity and quality of programming offered each year by the Lied Center. There is literally something for everyone! As Spotlight Sponsors this year we are excited to support Ajijaak on Turtle Island: Cranes in North America.

Priscilla C. Grew:

It is an honor to join the new MOSAIC Circle at the Lied Center. Beginning with our first childhood visit to a live performance, lifelong learning through the arts helps us empathize with others and learn about life experiences far different from those we will ever have ourselves. The MOSAIC Series supports the University of Nebraska’s efforts to achieve diversity, equity and inclusion in our statewide educational outreach. The MOSAIC performances and accompanying outreach programming for children, youth, students and the community will help us build future Lied audiences and ensure that our treasured Lied Center is a venue where all people feel welcomed, respected, and valued as they experience the arts.

Cheyenne and Hector Santiago:

It’s an honor to be able to join the MOSAIC Circle at the Lied Center. We’ve always felt the arts are not extras or nice-to-have. Instead, they’re what gives life depth and meaning. Performances and outreach programs like the MOSAIC Series have the power to unite a community and help us learn from one another. We are truly thrilled to be able to support this endeavor at our beloved Lied Center.

Rhonda Seacrest:

Since the early 1980’s, a priority of mine has been to provide visual and performing arts to underserved populations in Nebraska. The MOSAIC Series is a wonderful extension of that objective.

Dr. M. Colleen Jones:

It’s my pleasure to help sponsor the MOSAIC series. Often the “arts” are seen as inaccessible or too “high brow” for many people. These perceptions occur because often, the artistic performances don’t reflect, project or honor the heritages, cultures and traditions and stories of all the people.

As a child growing up in Kansas City, our nextdoor neighbor was a renowned jazz singer and pianist, and I would listen to her rehearse. It was magical. But jazz was relegated to clubs where a child like me wasn’t able to attend. The theaters

and symphony halls never presented jazz, so I was an adult before I could truly enjoy a live jazz performance, and even older before I saw jazz in a concert hall.

Through the MOSAIC series, the Lied is providing the opportunity for numerous world class artists who represent a variety of the world’s cultures to be seen, heard and experienced by the traditional Lied audience. The MOSAIC series is also a gateway for children - and adults - to experience diversity and broaden their appreciation for the kaleidoscope that represents all of humanity. And to provide kids (and folks) like me, to see their ethnic and cultural art forms presented with opportunities to learn and enjoy on a world class stage.

Art and Chris Zygielbaum:

Art and Chris Zygielbaum enjoy and take pride in supporting the arts in Lincoln. They both grew up in families where music and the arts enriched their lives. The Zygielbaums recognize that in a world that seems so divided by culture, politics, and religion, we must not forget those things we all hold precious in common. The arts, whether a music performance, a play, or a comedian, reminds us that we are all touched by a good story, stirred by a well-performed score or song, and made to laugh by a clever twist of words. Those are things shared no matter our background. That is the substance of the MOSAIC Circle. We bask in the richness of cultures other than our own.

Art’s parents were holocaust survivors. Because their culture was misunderstood, denigrated, and painted inferior, their lives were indelibly damaged. It is Art and Chris’ fervent hope that programs created through the MOSAIC Circle will help people understand and appreciate other people. They believe the arts can help us avoid the distrust and misunderstanding that underpins tragedies like the holocaust. And both of them are very proud of the Lied Center for Performing Arts, the joy and insight it brings to them, and the incredible value it provides to our community.

Preeta

D. Bansal:

In a time of rising divisiveness, the beauty of the arts is that they connect us at the level of heart and spirit, rather than trying to work through the separation of mind and thought. They show (not tell), and gently guide us to our common humanity. It’s not surprising that throughout history, artists have been cultural ‘shamans’ or canaries in the coal mines – early seers of the brightest and darkest aspects of our humanity. The Lied Center is such a vibrant contributor to our community. I’ve been surprised that Lincoln, with its manageable size, has become such a ‘go-to’ stop for some of the nation’s most exciting artists.
