WELCOME FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR No matter how you look at it, the 2020-2021 season is unlike any other in the Lied Center’s 30-year history. We face unprecedented challenges, but there is also so much reason for hope and optimism. The arts bring joy and inspiration into our lives, and we need that now more than ever. Regardless of the circumstances, the Lied Center is committed to fulfilling our mission to educate, inspire and entertain the people of Nebraska. It’s difficult to overstate the effects of COVID-19 on the arts industry. I would like to express my deep appreciation to all the individuals and corporations who have maintained their donations and support during this time, and extend a special thanks to those who have increased their gifts. While the theater was dark, our entire team worked tirelessly to welcome audiences back to the Lied in the safest way possible. We have designed a new socially distanced seating map, invested in state-of-the-art disinfecting products and upgraded our air filters. Our restrooms are now completely touchless, and masks are required at all times inside the building. In addition, we have adopted the most flexible ticketing policy in our history, allowing free refunds or exchanges on all tickets right up until showtime. We want you to return to the Lied Center with the confidence that your health and safety are our top priority. At the same time, we realize that not all audiences will be able to join us in person yet, and we will continue to bring you top-notch online programming as well. We will bring the arts to you. But here’s the best part – when the curtain rises on each show, you won’t be thinking about masks, social distancing or disinfectant. For 90 minutes or so, you get to escape. Studies show that during live performances, the heartbeats of people in the audience actually synch up; in this time of isolation, how beautiful will it be for our hearts to beat as one? Land acknowledgments are formal statements that recognize and honor Indigenous Peoples and their ongoing relationships with the land on which we live, learn and work. They demonstrate respect for Native people and their histories, they counter the erasure of Indigenous Peoples' histories and cultures, and they voice the truth about Native American history and the present. HIXSON–LIED LEGACY "THE LIED CENTER’S MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IS TO INTRODUCE INDIVIDUALS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS TO ENRICHING AND DIVERSE PERFORMING ARTS EXPERIENCES." – Christina Hixson Ernst F. Lied and Christina Hixson have transformed the lives of millions of Americans through the Lied Foundation Trust with philanthropic contributions of more than $300 million to over 125 different organizations in seven states. Born in 1906, Ernst F. Lied was a 1927 graduate of the University of Nebraska. He achieved business success as the owner of a Buick dealership in Omaha and as a real estate magnate in Las Vegas. Having no living relatives, he established a trust in 1972, and upon his death in 1980, his secretary and business partner Christina Hixson was appointed to administer the foundation. The first gift from the Lied Foundation Trust was a $10 million matching grant to build the Lied Center for Performing Arts in the early 1980s at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in memory of Lied’s parents, Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. The Lied Foundation Trust went on to support many projects in Nebraska, including Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo Lied Jungle, the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City and the Lied Transplant Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Christina Hixson first partnered with Lied in 1944 as his secretary at the Omaha Buick dealership, and she followed him to Las Vegas as a business partner in 1960. After Lied’s death, Hixson became the executrix of his estate and continues to serve as the Lied Foundation’s sole trustee. It was Hixson who made the decision to support the construction of the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In 2000, she also announced a gift of $18 million to support UNL’s Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. One of the last major gifts of the Lied Foundation Trust was a $2.5 million grant for the construction of the Lied Center’s new multipurpose space, the Lied Commons, which opened in 2012. Together, Lied and Hixson built a multimillion-dollar empire that has positively impacted the lives of millions of people in Nebraska and across the nation.

ADMISSION: Regardless of age, every person must have a ticket for admission. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all Lied events. PARKING: There are many nearby parking options in downtown Lincoln. To reserve your space or for more information, contact the City of Lincoln Parking Services at 402.441.PARK or parkandgo.org. ACCESSIBLE SEATING: The Lied Center is committed to accommodating patrons with disabilities. All theaters have wheelchair- and scooter-accessible locations where patrons can remain in their wheelchairs or transfer to theater seats. Patrons with mobility disabilities should request accessible seating when ordering tickets. Please note: the Lied Center is not able to physically assist patrons with chair transfers. Should you require direct physical assistance, please plan to attend with a personal care attendant. Guests of patrons with disabilities must purchase a ticket to attend performances. CONCESSIONS: Concessions are not currently available at Lied Center events. If necessary, patrons may bring a sealed plastic water bottle. No glass bottles will be allowed. EMERGENCIES: If it is necessary for you to receive an emergency message while you are attending an event, please leave your name and seat number at the coat check or ticket office. DANCING POLICY: In an effort to create a fun and safe environment for our patrons, the Lied Center has the following policy regarding dancing at Lied performances: Patrons may dance in the area immediately in front of their seats as long as it is carried out in a manner that is respectful of other audience members. Dancing in the aisles and other common areas will not be permitted for safety reasons.

PERFUME: As a courtesy to other Lied patrons, we ask that you please refrain from wearing strong cologne and perfumes during Lied Center performances. THE PHANTOM MAKES A LASTING IMPACT IN LINCOLN “ The Phantom of the Opera was the largest production in the Lied

Center’s history, with the most performances we’ve ever had of any artistic event (16), including one performance exclusively for students. Over 2,000 kids got to see the show. It’s also the biggest production, with 20 semi-trucks needed to bring it all in, and the largest number of people to ever see a show at the Lied Center—over 28,000.” – Lied Center Executive Director Bill Stephan

When The Phantom of the Opera opened at the Lied Center in October of 2019, it was truly a historic moment for the artistic landscape of Lincoln. Even the building itself will never be the same.

Enhancements allowing for larger sets, heavier equipment and other upgrades made Phantom possible, but will also open up possibilities for countless other productions to take the Lied Center stage. Stephan said, “We rebuilt the entire front section of the fly loft because the Phantom set was too big and too tall to clear the previous design of our light bridge. Now we can have sets positioned closer to the front of the stage. This is going to provide a more interactive experience because there will be even less distance between the audience and the performers. The investments made will allow the Lied to offer an enhanced experience to audiences for years to come.”

Beyond thrilling nearly 30,000 patrons, the artists of The Phantom of the Opera also spent time with dozens of local students through vocal and dance master classes at the Lied Center. Derrick Davis, who starred as The Phantom, said, “It’s so vital that the Lied Center can make things like this happen because if the students don’t see working performers, it makes it more challenging to step out into the real world. So when you open the doors this way for people to come in and do what I get to do with these students, you change lives in a great way.” That was exactly what happened for Kevin Pynes, a student at Lincoln Pius X who participated in a master class with The Phantom of the Opera dance captains. “It really gets kids like me inspired. I’ve been thinking of a musical theater career, and this made me believe that might actually be possible.” For the thousands of students who got to see The Phantom of the Opera as audience members, the dozens who got to learn from the artists and the tens of thousands of patrons who were part of the magic of the show in the Lied Center, it was an experience that won’t soon be forgotten.

PERFORMANCE FUND The Lied Foundation Trust established the Lied Performance Fund Endowment at the University of Nebraska Foundation to enable students and citizens of Nebraska to experience the finest cultural performances available. GK PLATINUM ARTIST SERIES Established in 2016, the GK (Glenn Korff) Platinum Artist Series enables the Lied Center for Performing Arts to bring the most iconic Broadway and popular artists to Nebraska. The series is named in honor of benefactor and UNL alumnus Glenn Korff. “The Lied Center’s Broadway programming has been transformed thanks to Glenn’s generosity,” said Bill Stephan, Executive Director of the Lied Center. This gift allows the Lied Center to bring some of the most accomplished performers in the world to Lincoln, fulfilling Glenn’s dream to enlighten and entertain families and generations of Nebraskans for years to come.” Korff’s passion for the performing arts began on campus as a member of Kosmet Klub, a musical and comedy ensemble for which he served as a set designer. THE MODERN GENTLEMEN Individually, Landon Beard, Todd Fournier and brothers Brian Brigham and Brandon Brigham were all in-demand singers prior to joining The Four Seasons alongside the legendary Frankie Valli. For well over a decade, they’ve wowed audiences all over the world with the rock & roll icon! During their time as the group’s longesttenured singers, they developed their own identity. Valli heard something in them that he never found in any of the configurations of singers he’d worked with. Together in the studio, they finely tuned their “signature sound” to iconic Frank Sinatra hits, blending the classic sounds of yesterday with their MODERN style. This discovery led to a cool new take on the popular hits of pop, rock, jazz and doo wop! They’ve performed with Valli on the world’s biggest stages, from multiple sold-out concert tours in London, England, at Royal Albert Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra, to the O2 Arena, Hampton Court and BBC Proms in the Park for over 40,000 people, which has over a million views on its YouTube channel! In 2014 the gentlemen represented their country on, “A Capitol Fourth” in Washington, D.C., with Michael McDonald, Patti LaBelle, John Williams and others, as well as two separate engagements on the Broadway stage. They were recently featured on the PBS special “Doo Wop Generations,” which aired across the country, and they have appeared as headliners in Las Vegas and in their own residency in Atlantic City, NJ. They’ve had the honor to share the stage with The Beach Boys, The Manhattan Transfer and so many other notable groups. They have performed for presidents of the United States and for Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, at the esteemed Arts Club in London. In 2020 TMG released their first holiday album, which was recorded at the iconic Village Studios in Los Angeles, CA. It features original songs written by multiplatinum, award winning songwriters Steve Diamond, Shelly Peiken, Robbie Nevil and Mike Krompass as well as familiar classics from over six decades of pop, rock and jazz that will even get Santa swingin’! Their music video to the title song of the album, “You Make It Feel Like Christmas,” garnered close to half a million views on YouTube in just a couple of weeks. This dynamic quartet is different from any other vocal group of their generation, having been a part of one of the biggest and most influential American rock & roll bands of all time! PROGRAM NOTES LANDON BEARD Originally from San Diego, CA, Landon began his performing career as a soloist for a Kodak commercial when he was just 3. He has since earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in musical theater from Cal State University, Fullerton. He was in the hit New York production of Altar Boyz and spent more than 10 years on the road singing with various artists on five different continents. He’s shared stages with Josh Groban, Eric Benet, Roger Daltrey, The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra Jr, Frankie Valli and more. His voice can be heard around the country, advertising for such companies as Toyota, NBC, Warner Bros, Pepsi and Disney. Landon has performed with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons since 2003.

TODD FOURNIER Originally one of 10 children from Toledo, OH, Todd began his career as an entertainer for Norwegian Cruise Lines. Moving to California opened up the world as Todd has toured through Tokyo, Taiwan, China, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Manila, Mexico, Canada and the UK as well as working for Universal Studios and Disney. He has been seen in shows such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Aida, Grease, Chess, Miss Saigon, Oklahoma and Chippendales. LARRY & LUCY BUNTAIN COMINE Larry and Lucy are the Lied Center’s newest Season Lieders, joining for the 2020-2021 season. They are definitely not new to the Lied family, however, having been Lied Center supporters and leaders for many years, including being Gold Event sponsors for the past several seasons. Lucy serves as the Lied Center’s Senior Development Director Emerita. She has made a major impact in building the Lied Center’s artistic programs, including the Glenn Korff Broadway Series and the Lied’s Command Performance of American Ballet Theatre with Misty Copeland and the St. Louis Symphony. During her time with the University of Nebraska Foundation, Lucy played a lead role in developing the arts at UNL, including the creation of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts and much more. She has a passion for Broadway, dance and a wide variety of art forms. Larry and Lucy enjoy supporting and advocating for Nebraska’s performing arts center, and their positive impact on the Lied will last long into the future.

SEASON LIEDERS PRISCILLA C. GREW

Priscilla Grew is a longtime supporter of the Lied Center because her parents taught her as a child how live performances can change a life. They took her with them to the famous 1949 Goethe Bicentennial Convocation in Aspen, CO, and to a Metropolitan Opera performance of The Marriage of Figaro in San Antonio in 1950. Grew says that she revisits the intense memories of these first live performances every time she attends an event at the Lied Center. Grew and her husband grew up with music—his grandmother was the New York soprano Alma Clayburgh, and hers studied piano in New York and Germany in the 1890s. Her great-grandfather also founded the Croswell Opera House in Adrian, MI, in 1866, one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the country, and her mother, Evangeline Perkins, was a piano teacher who studied at the Oberlin Conservatory. Grew was also the first member of the Lied Center’s Dance Circle, which supports bringing the world’s top dance companies to the Lied Center. She says, “It is a great honor for me to help start the new Lied Center Dance Circle. No, I never trained as a dancer, became a pianist or an actress, but I support the Lied, so that when the curtain rises, I can join others of all ages and backgrounds in the firsthand artistic experiences that transport us far beyond the horizons of our own individual lives.”

CHUCK & KAREN HARRIS We are pleased to participate in the Lied as Season Lieders for the 2020-21 season. Both lifelong Nebraskans, Karen grew up in Lincoln and graduated from UNL, and Chuck grew up in York and is a University of Minnesota graduate. We have been honored to participate in various Lied organizations, including members of the Lied Center’s 25th Anniversary Sterling Society. Karen served on the Friends of Lied board and served as its president in 2008-2009. She now serves on the Lied Statewide Advisory Board and on the board of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Chuck served on the Statewide Advisory Board and as its president in 2015-2016. He currently serves on the Chancellors Advisory Board at UNMC. We have enjoyed attending and encouraging friends to enjoy the Lied experience. The Lied’s commitment to making the performing arts experiences available to all through programs like Arts Across Nebraska, master classes by visiting performers and subsidized ticket prices makes the Lied Center the go-to destination for performing arts in Nebraska. We want all Nebraskans to have the amazing opportunity to enjoy all that the Lied Center makes possible.

SEASON LIEDERS VIKKI & DOUG KOTIL The Kotils are both lifelong Nebraskans and longtime supporters of the performing arts, including the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In 1985 Vikki was involved as a member of the then newly formed statewide Lied Center Program Advisory Council. She later joined the staff of the Lied Center Project during the facility’s construction and initial program development. “How exciting it was to personally see the brick and mortar transform into the world-class performing arts facility it is today,” said Vikki. “From the onset, the mission of the Lied Center was to increase the opportunities for all Nebraskans to experience the highest-quality performances and arts events. This is evident today as the Lied Center continues to enhance and enrich the cultural experiences of its patrons.” Doug added, “We feel so fortunate to benefit from the efforts of all those visionaries who made the Lied Center a reality. It is important to both of us to support the arts through the Lied Center’s programs and events, so future generations may also experience the enjoyment you can only obtain from live performances.” The Kotils say, “We’re thrilled to be a part of this season!”

RHONDA SEACREST Few Nebraskans have supported the arts and culture of the state, including the Lied Center for Performing Arts, more than Rhonda Seacrest and her late husband, James C. Seacrest. With their support of the HixsonLied College of Fine and Performing Arts, Sheldon Museum of Art, the Glenn Korff School of Music, Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra, the NET Foundation and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, among others, the Seacrests have gone above and beyond to provide world-class cultural events and education to citizens all across Nebraska. Jointly and individually, the Seacrests have headed fund drives raising millions of dollars and served on the boards of some of Nebraska’s most significant cultural entities. Seacrest puts a high priority on providing quality and equality of cultural experiences for all Nebraskans. “Attending any performance at the Lied Center enhances the cultural awareness of each person,” said Seacrest. “As I am seated in the audience, it is palpable. I can feel it! Patrons exit the Lied Center culturally elevated in a manner that can only be provided in an exceptional venue. And it is happening right here in Lincoln.”

SEASON LIEDERS ART & CHRIS ZYGIELBAUM Great supporters of the Lied Center for many years, Art and Chris Zygielbaum frequently express their great pride in and commitment to Nebraska’s performing arts center. Art is the president for the Lied Center Statewide Advisory Board, and Chris is a former Friends of Lied board member. Art and Chris can be found at the Lied Center for more than 20 performances a year and often choose to support programs that have exceptional artistic merit and social justice impact. In the 2019-2020 season the Zygielbaums were Gold Event sponsors for the play 1984, with the hope that it would educate the community on the importance of freedom and individual liberty. A number of years ago, they supported a youth play from Australia called Hitler’s Daughter that explored issues of Nazi Germany through a fictional plot. This production, in particular, had a significant impact on local youth who were given the opportunity to experience the show. The Zygielbaums also sponsored My Antonia, Trevor Noah, The Capitol Steps and many other memorable and meaningful programs in past seasons. Because of their deep belief in the importance of the Lied Center to our community and state, the Zygielbaums were motivated to increase their level of support this season to help assure a strong recovery from the effects of the pandemic slow down.

LIED CONCERTS MOVE ONLINE & INTO NEIGHBORHOODS

On March 13, 2020, the Lied Center for Performing Arts was supposed to be hosting a full house to enjoy the Neil Diamond tribute band Super Diamond. Instead, that show became the first of dozens of concerts, events and performances to be postponed or canceled at the Lied as the COVID-19related shutdowns began in Lincoln and beyond. As it became clear that things were not going to be business as usual for quite some time, Lied Center staff found themselves needing to think swiftly and creatively to keep providing arts, entertainment and inspiration to the people of Nebraska. The focus quickly turned online. The debut of the Lied Live Online concert series came exactly two weeks after that first postponed event and kicked off with Lincoln blues/soul singer-songwriter Emily Bass. That first concert drew an audience of over 200 live viewers on the Lied Center’s Facebook page. Within days, the concert had been viewed over 10,000 times. In the weeks following Bass' performance, Lied Live Online became a full-fledged concert series, presenting a new artist every weekend. From March through July, 18 live concerts were presented from artists, including Susan Werner, Daniel Martinez, Josh Hoyer, Paul Barnes, Andrea von Kampen, April Verch, Jackie Allen, Hans Sturm, Michael Londra, Juli Burney, Hannah Huston, Nebraska Brass, Jason Michael Webb and more. Lied Live Online featured an eclectic mix of genres, mixing national and international acts into a roster of mostly local artists. Audiences tuned in from Lincoln and far beyond, connecting with artists and enjoying the high-quality entertainment they’ve come to associate with the Lied. As Lied Live Online brought audiences entertainment virtually, the Lied’s Music on the Move took it to the streets. Saturday evenings in June and July, a bicycle-powered stage carrying local artists brought music to neighborhoods all over Lincoln. This mobile summer concert series was hugely popular, drawing socially distanced crowds each weekend as it cruised the streets and invited people to dance on sidewalks and front yards. One special concert brought a live brass quartet to three retirement communities, where residents enjoyed the music from their balconies. Whether online, in the streets or in our beautiful auditorium, the Lied Center remains committed to our mission of providing world-class art to the people of Nebraska and beyond.

THE LIED CENTER'S MISSION OF EDUCATION MOVES ONLINE An important piece of the Lied Center mission is providing top-quality arts education opportunities. When COVID-19 forced the suspension of in-person events beginning in the spring, the Lied education team moved quickly to reimagine how to continue accomplishing that mission. The first order of business was the Lied summer camps. In 2019, 35 high school students had attended the Lied Center’s Triple Threat Broadway Intensive, an opportunity to take voice, dance and acting workshops from Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb and a staff of professional teaching artists. Another group of students attended the Lied’s Piano Academy, which in 2019 was headed up by international award-winning pianist Sean Chen and in 2020 by acclaimed pianist Eric Zuber. The Lied education team quickly decided that canceling was not an option, and instead they swiftly and creatively recreated the camps in an all-online format. Each day in the 2020 Intensive included small group classes in acting, dancing and voice as well as special sessions on topics, including auditioning, studying musical theater in college and life as a working actor, all conducted via video conferencing. The Piano Academy featured similar small-group and one-on-one instruction from the teaching artists, giving students from Lincoln and far beyond the opportunity to develop their skills from home. Beyond summer camps, the Lied’s education department has also been innovative in offering online content to the community as a whole. Since July, Lied Learning Online has been presenting a new arts education event each week, ranging from musical theater masterclasses for students to creative movement for preschoolers to lunchtime topics for all ages. The Lunch & Learn series is a live video podcast program featuring interviews with arts professionals all over the nation. Tiny Lieders features programming especially for the youngest audiences, providing imagination adventures geared at children under six. Master Classes at the Lied gives students 11-18 years old the opportunity to brush up on skills and learn new ones with a team of professional teaching artists. Finally, Huskers in the Spotlight features concerts from UNL students and alumni who are already making a name for themselves in the music industry. All of the events are offered for free, with the cost of admission being simply a desire to learn something new.
