Studio as a test case for an urban renewal strategy, attributing to the city development as a working city, build on a comprehensive understanding of the stakes, researched and tested through design and embodied in the proposed architecture. Thr main objective was to find a meaning of large scale transformation and develop an integral approach urban renewal in an complex actual urban context. Water side as treasure

Railway as connector and separator

Density and openness

Anoother industry

The river Senne has been eliminated from map of Brussels in a history by leaving just utilitarian water canal that has been served for industries till some time ago. Now the industries don’t use water anymore, while the water side has more potential that it is now. Therefore it is important to give back the waterside to the city and give the canal another meaning

Connector in with a city and regional scale while it is separator in local physical scale. Besides of separator railway (wall) there are some points that are connecting both sides - tunnels (bottle necks). By emphasizing the border these points becomes important. Concept of node - condensation of public transport and pedestrian flows as well car traffic, by adding potential train station and boat stop it becomes important node with particular characteristic

This relationship becomes important and the project aim is to highlight it. Characteristics of public space is defined by node, there is intense movement, connections and flows – buzz; defined by density and supports activities that are related with blocks around it and their program; open space that is facing canal that is supported by and supports density and gives space and activities for neighborhood; open space, that is low activity, just space to be along a canal, place to breathe, but when there is a need it can support big events (this space supports possible activities on water that can be related to smaller or bigger events); public space way that supports more local neighborhood needs in other side of the rail, space that can be more familiar to them and is connected through bottle neck to other side and joined in continuous open space

Creative industries are generating products that generally have functional use with additional intellectual/creative input. They have gained important role in Europe Union and Belgium economic development. They shape economic, ecological, social, educational and transport conditions in a city. Creative industries usually are introduced in a city as part of regeneration process in order to reactivate flat public spaces and they are always combined with mix use. In order to gain economic efficiency in shared infrastructure, knowledge, inspiration change, advantage of co-working in short term .projects and labor dynamics creative industries have been clustered In order to link neighborhood and new program there can be added program that links both. As creative industries condensates knowledge and experience they can take part in existent educational system as alternative new type of school – creative learning. This additional program can create “third spaces” for creating new social networks for community. This education can be related with surrounding schools .as well with adult education by offering them new type of knowledge The link of creative industries and public space can be realized in collective space for example these are mentioned education spaces, cultural outstanding facilities like showrooms, galleries etc., and retail spaces. There is need as well for ‘low cost’ alternative spaces that can be just public space that provides facilities of different events .organized by creative industries

ATOWER PASSIVE HIGHSCRAPER Riga, Latvia

Riga is the capital of Latvia and has been experienced rapid economic development in last few years. There have been different development plans for different parts of Riga, as well as the development of left Daugava river bank, that proposed highscraper district in Kipsala. Some of the projects have been realized and constructed now, some continue their existence on paper. A Tower is a project that proposes highrise building in aforementioned area, that includes different enviromental issues, that are demanded by the tendency of nowdays in terms of urbanisation, energy, waste, etc. ARCHITECTONIC SPATIAL SYNTHESIS Architecure and Urban planning faculty Rigas Technical University 2011

NATURAL VENTILATION In the result of air gravity the warm air is discharged through atrium. Natrual ventialtion also is provided through the operable windows in the second layer of the curtain facade . Heat and moisture are recovered from the outgoing air, and hygroscopic thermal wheels condition incoming air in winter.

INSOLATION AND ENERGY FROM SUN The atriums are providing good insolation deep inside the building. Solar termal panels for water heating and solar photovoltage panels are located on external layer of double facade. Solar shading - solar PV louvres on the outer surface of the facade and manually operated blinds between the double facade layers allow to cotroll over immediate enviroment.

WATER [RE] CYCLE Rain water collection from the roof and facades. Rain water collection tanks Rain water and grey water filtration and purification trough filters and soil in the plant beds of recreation areas. Recycled water is used for irrigation, household purposes (like for flushing toilits) etc.

URBANWATERSTRATEGY

COEXISTANCEofACTIVITIES

Idea for development of Olympic site is to create coexistence of different programs, global and local activities by layering buildings and streets. These different layers come together on a street level or green spaces, but beside it there are created enclosures were can happen ineraction of communities.

LOCALFLOW

Since density in the city is high, therefore it is possible layer and separate different flows. Main “global” flow through the site is on ground level, but local flows between can be levelled up. Mixed functions in vertical scale give potential to create vibrant and busy urban environment.

URBANPARK

Wetland park is a urban park in a city where can happen different activities, recreation and social interaction beside a positive effect to environmental creating good microclimate in the city, biodiversity, environmental education as well as water purification in a park etc.

L I E V E R I V E R DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY FOR OLD LIEVE RIVER Gent, Belgium

The aim was to develop sustainable design by taking in a count characteristic of surrounding environment and recourses therefore it was important to understand fragile essence of the place and it’s relationships with context and architectural program. The result of a project was expected to be simple and self-evident design. Team: MARGARIDA PEREIRA, HANNES VAN DAMME, LIENE CIKANOVICA, IOANNIS GIO, SONIA LAMESA Advanced Architectural Design and Sustainability International master, 2nd semester Hogeschool voor Wetenschap en Kunst department of Architecture SintLucas Brussels-Ghent (Belgium) 2012

S T R AT E G Y

Lieve river is situated between two clusters of development: residential and industrial. Currently, there is a prominent division of the 2 programs and the river is hidden between the entities. Parallel to the river are prominent green spaces with a wide range of biodiversity. This can be a new typology for city planning along the river where it can allow open spaces to relate with the density of building environment. Lieve river development project provides strategy for future master plan that could give new identity to forgotten part of the city and old river.

C O M I N G T O W A R D S N AT U R E

ACTIVITIES ALONG THE RIVER

The main strategy is first to create gates for the river by implementing a natural gate at each end, in a reslult the river is highlighted at an urban scale and micro scale.

Secondly to maintain the river as a natural border by opening and maintaining it in certain areas where it was one neglected.

Third to area that

maintain Lieve as mental axis of the is supported by green pockets along it.

Finlally to strengthen connection points that are implemented systematically throughout the Lieve in order to allow movement between the two different areas, in a result this in turn can help the development of the area by being part of the natural evolution of the Lieve.

DESIRABLE SCREEN Junk Desirable is a project in which are used junk & lowcost material to create a new desirable SCREEN

Every day in our mailbox we receive many newspapers, advertising brochures, information we don’t need causing wasting of energy and material. Desirable Screen is newspaper of life. Small episodes, essential feeling of moment, few words, letters, like a pixels in our daily rush and overflow of information is written on the screen. As well it is made of material that is needless and unused, and is just lying on a floor by the mail boxes, but has so many shapes and esthetical qualities. Final work were piece of furniture and presentation video (http://youtu.be/dz56wdG7tg0).
