thoughts 42 FSS COMMANDER'S
Maj Michelle P. Richards
Happy New Year’s Maxwell! We hope that you had wonderful holidays
that afforded the opportunity to rest, relax, connect with family and friends, and reflect on all the events of 2018. Many of us will start the new year with a commitment to making our lives a little better. Just as we did last year, the 42d Force Support Squadron is delivering some grand events in health, food, fitness, finances, and R&R programs this first quarter to help you on your New Year’s resolution journey.
One of the events I’d like to highlight this quarter is a Food Show hosted
at Maxwell Club. This initiative will spark our Food & Beverage modernization so that we ensure we are delivering delicious, affordable, and healthy options to our community. This event has a special place in my heart. A few years ago I was diagnosed with Diabetes. At the time I thought I was in the best shape of my life, but as luck would have it, this is a disease that runs in my family. You just can’t fight genes sometimes. I distinctly remember my husband tearing a box of Cape Cod Cranberry Bog Frogs out of my hands as I inhaled 99% of it. I simply love food. It’s my weakness. During this time a dietitian told me that “Fitness is 20% exercise and 80% nutrition.” Cue big eye roll, but the reality is he was 100% correct. Over the last few years I have worked incredibly hard toward sustaining healthy blood sugars purely through nutrition and exercise. My office jokes that I don’t eat. The truth is I eat differently now, but don’t you? From paleo to keto we all choose food that we believe is best for us. That’s where you can help us. We hope you can attend the food show, vote for the food and beverage offerings you would like to see in the near future, and enhance the programs the FSS delivers to you. If food and beverage isn’t your interest, we hope there’s something else in the magazine that will pique your curiosity. If not, please feel free to tell us what you want to see. We are here to program for you and your family. As you get ready to start 2019 remember if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. The 42 FSS is here ready to be your Wingman! Stay Strong and Unleash the Force in 2019!

COVER STORY They are both rescue dogs, 6 years old, and love the dog park or going for rides in my Jeep. I got Zelda (the larger one) in Destin Florida while stationed at Eglin AFB and Baxter here at a local shelter. Zelda’s favorite game is probably chase and Baxter just likes belly rubs. My favorite memory of them is the first time I took them on a hike and got to watch them run through the trails off the leash. They are a handful, but I couldn’t imagine life without them and I truly consider them family.

Have you ever wondered if you might need help? My spouse and I seem to be in constant arguments, and it’s getting difficult to hide our frustrations from our kids.
I recently lost my sister to illness. Now I’m reminded of her everywhere I go by the simplest things. It’s like my mind just won’t accept that she’s gone.
My parents are coming to visit, and I haven’t seen them since I moved away. I should be happy to see them after so long, but I’m too anxious they’ll harshly judge my current life style instead.
I should make an effort to go out, meet new people, and make friends. But honestly I would rather stay inside and do my own thing alone.
Usually I can handle my own stress, but lately, it just seems to be too much. I feel like I’m losing control of myself and no one can see it happening but me.
Does any of the above sound like you? Do you know someone who has voiced these concerns? If so, now is the time to get the help that you need. What you’re going through is important and you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES If you’ve ever backed away from the idea of going to the gym, then this article is for you. Plenty of people have been where you are now with feelings of insecurity, lack of confidence, or hesitation. You’ll think of a hundred different excuses not to go like “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “it’s intimidating”, but there’s really only one thing keeping you from going: YOU. How do we overcome these mental obstacles? First, understand that when you go, no one is going to be paying close attention to you. Everyone will be focusing on their own workout, so don’t feel pressured by other attendees. Keep going, don’t give up, and soon you’ll have the confidence to go without having to convince yourself!
What do you do when you get there?
Claim a spot. You don’t have to be in the front row or in the limelight. On your scheduled days, go a bit early to avoid peak hours, get yourself a machine in the back or a spot in a corner, put some motivational music on and get to work. Music is a wonderful distraction and you’ll be focused on your own activity that you won’t notice of anyone else coming or going.
Want to avoid uncomfortable questions with staff? Rest assured, there are none. If you
have questions about equipment or correct workout procedures, that is what the staffs are there for! They are happy to show you how the machines operates, what is available throughout the facility, and answer anything you want to know about fitness.
Need some special direction?
Call the front desk and ask to speak to a free trainer. After finding where your limits are and what your body can handle, they’ll work with you to set up a schedule that fits your specific needs. You won’t drop 20 pounds in a week, but the correct goal can help you get to where you need to be. As you work through it, the trainer will help you with accountability to keep your motivation up and fitness in check.
Need a wingman?
Grab a friend and go in together. There’s no rule that says you have to do this alone. Be each other’s motivation and support, don’t let one another quit, and most importantly help each other complete separate goals. The gym isn’t meant for you to compete against the person next to you, it’s to get yourself in healthier shape! If you don’t have a friend who’s willing to join you, that’s no problem. There are plenty of free group classes you can take like Zumba, Yoga, and PUMP. There is always a class going on during the week, so try one out!
Want to keep motivation?
Don’t force yourself into workouts that aren’t fun or stressful. There are plenty of things at the gym that you can try. Some people are runners, some people like to lift weights, and some people like dance classes. No two people are the same. Try out all sorts of fitness challenges until you find the one that’s just right for you. Once that happens, going to the gym becomes less of a chore and more of a fun activity to look forward to. The first step towards getting into a healthier lifestyle begins with you. Put yourself out there, and the repetition will help your confidence prosper.

EARLY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Bruce Barton Chief, Force Development Flight
When you hear Professional Development Center (PDC) what do you think? It’s our hope that you think of a place where you can grow the skills necessary to become a better leader in our Air Force. The PDC is one of the many entities within the Force Support Squadron that exists almost entirely to support you in your development. Did you know? Anyone, with base access can attend these courses. Whether for a specific audience or open to all, courses are offered in building 501. MSgt Steve Martin, Air Force Career Assistance Advisor
The Career Assistance Advisor is the champion of the PDC; they are the scheduler and maintainer of all course offerings, but they are not always the instructor. We have a cadre of talented people to instruct the many diverse courses offered in your PDC. What this does for us is gives you a diversity of thought processes across the many areas within the confines of this Maxwell-Gunter community. Just some of the courses offered are the renowned John Maxwell Leadership courses. Also offered are classes dealing with resiliency, which provides some tools to help you cope with the demands of military service. We also offer bullet-writing courses which is a talent honed by training and experience. This course gives you that training and different perspectives from local senior leaders as you begin your experiential journey to being the best writer possible, which in turn will help you and your people. We also offer the Senior Noncommissioned Officer Orientation each year, also with that we do a Noncommissioned Officer orientation. These courses are designed for this level of leadership to assist supervisors with an understanding of their responsibilities and opportunities at their current level. Our Flight Commander’s Edge Course morphed into an Air Force course led by the Eaker Center. This four day course, which we hope to offer twice each year, does a deep dive into the world of flight leadership and all the challenges associated with leading a team of Air Force professionals. This list of offerings is long, the best way to know about them is to save this URL: https://cs2.eis.af.mil/sites/12962/ default.aspx to your favorites and check it often. Not only for yourself, but mention it to your co-workers or subordinates. We would enjoy seeing you at our next course. When you get better at your profession, we all get better. Also, visit the Air Force Career Assistance Advisor - Maxwell AFB Facebook page, click like and you will see all the postings about retaining, professional development opportunities and more.

MONEY If you’ve ever had a question about finances - whether that includes buying a house, a car, preparing for a relocation, retirement, TSP funds, or just managing your money better - now is the perfect time to see what we offer. A simple 30-60 minute meeting with a financial advisor can help get you set for the rest of your life. What you may not know is that all the resources are already at your disposal, but you might need that little nudge to know where to start. That’s where our financial staff at Airman & Family Readiness step in to help.
MATTERS Tonya Kimball Personal Financial Counselor
The first step is identifying what you need to know. Finances are a constant in life and are applied to nearly everything in adulthood. It’s involved in where you live, how you travel, taking care of yourself and family, credit score or debt, and will be a part of your life for as long as you deal with money. So why not get a handle on it early on? It may seem difficult and hard to understand, but getting acquainted with your finances and learning how to develop good saving habits couldn’t be easier. Just like riding a bike, the more you give it your attention the better at it you’ll become. The second step is getting in touch with people who can help you and the process couldn’t be more simple. Just call A&FRC and they’ll assist you with where you need to go. No one will have the same financial situation, so each plan will be created to fit your specific needs. If the distance is a problem, our staff can travel anywhere within a 50-mile radius to come and meet with you - as long as it’s not a place of residency. If appointments aren’t your thing, A&FRC are offering different
classes in during this quarter that will help in specific areas of finance. Even better, they’re free to anyone with DoD base access - airman, civilian workers, and family! If you’re a supervisor and you’re concerned that those under your care are in need of some advice, have one of our staff speak at your next meeting or function. The more you understand how to handle your money, the more confidence you’ll have in future purchases.
There’s no reason for anyone to be concerned about how they’ll handle their daily allowances or if they’ll be financially stable 40-50 years from now. Whether you’re in dire need of financial help or you’d like to get a second opinion on how you’re handling decisions, those at A&FRC are not there to judge and are happy to talk to you. Take the first step towards financial readiness by calling (334) 953-2353 and ask for Roger Knauff or Tonya Kimball.
