thoughts 42 FSS COMMANDER'S

Maj Michelle P. Richards

School’s out and summer has definitely arrived. Cue mommy guilt. My daughter has been asking to visit Disney World since she was 2 years old. Thank you, Disney Junior, for all of your subliminal advertising… it’s working. Honestly, kids are the best at holding adults accountable. My daughter has not minced words and has launched a full scale daily campaign of advocating for a Disney trip. So, I need to buckle down and get my little princess to her castle. However, the mere thought of planning a trip can be overwhelming. There’s so much information and tips to digest. Lucky for me, our ITT team just got back from a conference on the updated programs from Disney and Universal. From one guilty parent to another, if you need help that’s where the 42 FSS can step in. Have you been to our ODR/ITT office? The staff is phenomenal. We bring you everything from a Raptor show to Skydiving, with so much more in store for these next three months. Some of our biggest upcoming events for you are the Patriot Fest4th of July (did someone say Thompson Square, Easton Corbin, and laser show? #winning), an Information Fair (our vendors will range from our activities on base to services/businesses outside of our gates), and the 2018 Base Picnic.

If you are looking for a daycation, check out pg 18. We have quite a few activities for our adventure enthusiasts. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our beautiful recreation areas. One hour away at Lake Martin, you can spend a few hours relaxing on the beach or spend a few nights in one of our cabins. A hidden gem three hours from here is Midbay Shores. Midbay Shores' proximity to Destin provides ample opportunities to relax, eat, and shop. ODR/ITT recently modernized our methods for you to research potential vacation spots. You can take flyers, or utilize the ipad stations that have updated photos of our recreation area accommodations. We recognize the importance of time and want to ensure you and your families are taken care of. Remember our New Year’s resolution: Family, Fitness, Finances, Friends, and Fun. If there’s something you’d like us to see offered here, let us know so we can help you live your life at the max!

COVER STORY

"Honestly, kids are the best at holding adults accountable."

Christopher and Leigh Ann Fisher, along with their beautiful kids Cameron, Alexys, and Aureana, show us what it means to be a patriotic American Family while representing the HUMANS OF MAXWELL! They support each other through the challenges of military relocation and engage in athletic activities such as the Fisher Family 5k run. They make a dedicated effort to spending time being active and outdoors, always keeping busy by being a part of base or family events. It’s endearing to see how easily laughter comes to this group and how comfortable they are when they’re together. This year they are looking for ways that will allow them to give back to their community around the base and share their good spirits.

AIR FORCE INNS

REMODELED As one of the largest Air Force operations in the

world, the University Inns are upgrading to ensure that their guests are met with the highest quality of customer service. University Inn at Maxwell and Gunter AFB have been going through a series of renovations and are proud to say they are progressing nicely. So far over 257 rooms have been remodeled and more is still to come! None of this would have been accomplished if not for the outstanding teamwork between all departments and staff involved. With each renovation, Lodging brings their customers one step closer to a happy stay in their facilities and keeps Maxwell and Gunter one of the nicest places to stay. Lodging General Manager, Chris Kitchens, stated, “The revenue generated by Air Force lodging around the world is put right back into the care of our customers. Our military and civilian guests deserve to be well taken care of, and our team has worked very hard to ensure the new rooms have all the comforts of home. This year an additional 262 rooms will be completed."

Sure, you know that fast food isn’t the healthiest and not exercising makes weight gain imminent, but there’s so much more that you need to know concerning your well-being. Great thing that Maxwell-Gunter AFB has many resources in order to help you out! Events such as Super Salads hosted by the A&FRC promote healthy lifestyles in terms of food choices. Many people can sign up to this free event and work to bring all sorts of salad choices together. Each person brings five empty jars along with one salad ingredient

of their choice

then mix and match their own salads, trying out something new that someone has brought and increasing their awareness of new foods. A nutritionist will often come by and speak briefly on how to continue these dietary patterns and explain the benefits it has upon your physical health.

GOLD STAR PROGRAM

At some point everyone encounters loss and the heartache that follows. It’s not easy and everyone experiences it in different, unexplainable ways. Yet one thing that is for certain in these crucial times: the United States Air Force never stops being there for you. The Air Force Families Forever program reaches out to those who have experienced loss and extends all forms of resources they can provide. Whether they send their support in every ten, thirty, ninety days or even a year, they’ll ensure that families are taken care of and never alone. In 2015, the Sibley family lost an irreplaceable part of their family: their son Forrest. Loved, reliable, and dependable,he was the one that people wanted to be with either in leisure time or during combat. The word “no” wasn’t in his vocabulary when it came to getting work done or helping out his brothers. Those who got to know Forrest would speak unbelievable stories of how he saved the lives of his comrades or the incredible achievements that he earned. His father, Lowell Sibley, spoke of some of the proudest moments concerning his son: Being a sports enthusiast in high school, the times he spent outdoors hunting and fishing, and the day he graduated Combat Control School at Pope Army Airfield. Now Mr. Sibley spends time getting to know everything his son had been involved with from the people who knew his son to the military programs he was a part of. Now he’s personally assisted by the Air Force Family Forever program and a member of the Gold Star Family. Support reveals itself in different ways. For some, a letter in the mail with a reminder that no one is ever forgotten is enough of a

comfort. For others, the Air Force takes the necessary steps to ensure the families are still connected with the resources they need through the Gold Star ID Card Initiative. With the use of this card, Mr. Sibley and his family are able to access Maxwell base at any time they wish to utilize any programs or to be part of base wide events. He even goes a step further by speaking out and providing feedback that can only create improvements as the Air Force continues to grow. To learn more about this program, contact Tyesha Stiff at (334) 953-8656 or go to the Airmen and Family Readiness Center at 55 S. Mitchell St., Montgomery, AL. 36112 Bldg. 677.

Greetings from the Maxwell Retiree Activities Office. We hope you are enjoying a great summer so far. As we discussed in our January 2018 article, the Air Force Retiree Council met in May at Joint Base San Antonio- Randolph. I am awaiting an email from our Area Representative with an update regarding the Council’s findings and hope to let you know what was discussed when I write our next article. I also hope to have a date for the 2018 Maxwell Retiree Appreciation Day at that time. One of the hot topics of discussion in our office are the changes to Tricare that are happening in 2018 and 2019. You are probably already aware that Tricare has merged regions, made Urgent Care visits more accessible, and lowered some costs for certain patient care while raising rates for other services. However, another big change to Tricare coverage you need to know about is the elimination of the Tricare Retiree Dental Program (TRDP) on December 31, 2018. Don’t worry though, because eligible beneficiaries will be able to sign up for the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP). FEDVIP Dental will replace the Tricare Retiree Dental Program. Due to the fact that enrollment in FEDVIP Dental is not automatic, Tricare beneficiaries will need to enroll in FEDVIP Dental during the open enrollment period that runs this year (2018) from November 12 until December 10 in order to have coverage under the new dental plan that begins

January 1, 2019. The Federal Employees Dental Insurance and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP) will also offer vision plans to eligible retirees and family members. To learn more information about these changes and a list of available dental and vision carriers go to the BENFEDS webpage at https://tricare.benefeds. com/InfoPortal/indexAction . Finally, the RAO staff and I want to wish you a fun and safe 4th of July. Don’t forget to check out the updated Air Force Retiree Services website at http://www.retirees. af.mil/ for more retiree news and information. As always, our staff at the Maxwell Retiree Activities Office are here to answer questions from retirees and their families from all service branches. You can contact us by phone at 334-953-6725 or email at retiree.affairs@us.af. mil. We appreciate your feedback, so please let us know if you have any particular military retiree subjects you would like to read about in future articles. Take care.
