REVOLUTIONARY

discovery

Do you look like one of your parents?

Are you tall like your uncle? Do you have blue eyes like your grandmom? These characteristics, called traits, are dictated by your DNA. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a molecule that contains segments called genes, which in turn contains the coding, or instructions, for the traits that separate you from everyone else in the world.

Did you know DNA was first isolated in the 1860’s by a Swiss doctor named Friedrich Miescher. It seems Dr. Miescher noticed some sort of microscopic substance in the accumulated pus of discarded bandages. In addition to being super gross, this finding led to a string of discoveries by numerous scientists. By the 1950’s, researchers had more or less figured out the basic structure of DNA. Today DNA is studied to find cures for all sorts of diseases. It is used to convict criminals, or free the wrongly accused. The discovery of DNA has changed the way we look at the world.

Nard Pugyao was a six-year old Philipino boy when he met an American missionary named Dick Roe. Roe had traveled to Pugyao’s village to learn the native language. You see, Roe wanted to translate the Bible into a language Pugyao and the other villagers could understand. Roe wanted to introduce the villagers to the God of the Bible.

The villagers were interested. They asked if God was powerful: “More powerful than the spirits that have controlled our lives from the beginning of time,” they asked. “Is He more powerful than our ancestors, the headhunters?” Roe assured them that God was more powerful. Hopeful, the villagers started teaching Roe their language. The first thing Roe translated was the Book of Mark. Nard Pugyao was 13 when Roe gave him the translated copy of Mark. It was the first time Pugyao had ever encountered God’s Word. Pugyao quickly read through the Book of Mark, growing more and more captivated by the stories of Jesus’ life and ministry. But when Pugyao came to the parts of the Gospel where Jesus was arrested, tried, and crucified, Pugyao became angry and disillusioned. Pugyao could not understand why God allowed Jesus, His Son, to be killed. He threw the book down in disgust. Pugyao was confused: “I couldn’t understand why God wouldn’t protect His own Son. [The Spirits we worshiped] defended us to the death. Because of them, no one could touch us. I wanted a god like that, someone who would protect me from the spirits that demanded that we sacrifice our cows, chickens, pigs and dogs. This God didn’t even save His own Son.”

Suddenly, Pugyao heard God’s voice stirring deep within him. Pugyao recalls the moment: “‘Nard, don’t you understand,’ I heard Him say. ‘That’s how much I love you. I gave my Son on your behalf.’ For the first time I understood grace. I understood how much God loved me.”

W

hile not his biggest film, Shia LeBeouf’s role in the Disney™ movie Holes might have been the transforming moment in his life. He had already earned a measure of success on Disney’s TV show Even Stevens. But it was his performance in Holes that caught the eye of Steven Spielberg. Spielberg eventually cast LeBeouf in the movies Transformers and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
