WORKING TOGETHER LIFECENTER NORTHWEST ANNUAL REPORT 2016

WORKING TOGETHER IS AT THE HEART OF WHAT WE DO. Helen Keller once said, ‘Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.’ At LifeCenter Northwest, we know that working together is the key to our continued success.

KEVIN J. O’CONNOR President & CEO

WE’RE GRATEFUL FOR THE SERVICE OF SO MANY IN OUR COMMUNITY. That includes partners at donor hospitals, transplant programs, medical examiner’s offices, tissue processing facilities, and testing labs. Most importantly, of course, our gratitude extends to the hundreds of donor families who allow us to witness their strength and generosity in the face of loss. In the last year, we’re proud to look back at many examples of how we’ve strived harder than ever to honor the spirit of collaboration and teamwork. In 2016, we invested in a heightened focus on outreach, education, and service at donor hospitals across our large service area. With more time devoted to building relationships at hospitals big and small, we’ve seen overall donation numbers go up as well as new opportunities in unexpected places. Even a small hospital with just a ventilator and an OR can have a donor, and Bonner General Hospital (Sandpoint, ID) and Northeast Montana Health Services: Trinity Hospital (Wolf Point, MT) both had their first donors ever. Several other small hospitals also had their first organ donors in many years, including Valley Hospital (Spokane, WA), Olympic Medical Center (Port Angeles, WA), and St. Peters Hospital (Helena, MT). The spirit of teamwork in 2016 extended to how we built on our existing relationships— from the front line all the way to the executive suite. We had over 30 CEO-to-CEO meetings in 2016 and over 35 meetings

between our leadership and other executives. This initiative also led to a new continuing education unit and an e-newsletter designed to help spotlight and share the hard work of partner hospitals. We also started bringing together transplant administrators from all five local centers in 2016—Seattle Children’s Hospital, Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital, Swedish Medical Center, UW Medical Center, and Virginia Mason Medical Center. We initially began these regular face-to-face meetings to find new ways to get more information to donor families and recipients, but they’ve also led to greater information sharing between hospitals and new opportunities to standardize and improve processes. Our 2016 Donation and Transplantation Symposium in October was in many ways the culmination of a year of collaboration. Over 200 donation and transplantation professionals came together to share best practices, recognize achievements, and find new ways to better fulfill our collective mission. One of the highlights was an hour-long

leadership roundtable with executives from all of our transplant centers and largest donor hospitals, discussing how we can work together as a community to improve donation and save more lives. The event included CEOs from Harborview Medical Center, Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital, and UW Medical Center, as well as executives from CHI Franciscan Health, MultiCare Health System, Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, Providence Alaska Medical Center, Virginia Mason Medical Center, and Swedish Health System. Successful organ and tissue donation and transplantation is truly a team effort, and in 2016, we felt more honored than ever to do this work in collaboration with so many others. We look forward to working together to continue to help more people this year and the next.

We continue to see more lives saved year over year than ever before in our region. First and foremost, we attribute this to the generosity of our donor families, our strong relationships with hospital partners, the unrelenting focus of our staff, and a daily re-commitment to our mission. We know that lives depend on our best work and we never cease to appreciate the impact we have on those we serve.

There are two ways people die: when their heart stops (circulatory death) and when their brain dies (brain death). Both brain death and circulatory death are formal, legal definitions of death.

The Donor Designation Share is the total number of designated donors as a percentage of all state residents age 18 and older. All OPOs strive to encourage a minimum 50 percent Donor Designation Share, and the current national average is 54%.

Even though LifeCenter covers an area spanning 25% of the land mass of the United States, we see striking similarities throughout the entire region—generosity through high registry rates, hospitals with unwavering commitments to ensuring community health, and families willing to provide the ultimate gift through donation. LifeCenter has the privilege of facilitating organ and tissue donation throughout Alaska, Montana, North Idaho, and Washington.

Supporting the families of donors is a big part of our mission. In 2016, we had more than 12,000 points of communication with donor families across our region—from northern Alaska to eastern Montana. We also hosted events across the region, for families to come together to share their experiences and help one another heal.

2016 LCNW HOSPITAL AWARDS

Donation Excellence Award

We want to thank and recognize the hospitals in our region that made outstanding achievements in organ and tissue donation in 2016. Several new awards were presented to honor individuals, community partners and hospitals. We are honored to partner with the staff in these organizations on such important work. Without this help, we would be unable to fulfill the donation wishes of so many families and save the lives of so many thankful recipients.

The Donation Excellence Award is presented to one hospital in our service area that has demonstrated impressive outcomes, strong and effective processes, and unwavering dedication to improving the lives of both donor families and transplant recipients.

Gift of Life Award Alaska Native Medical Center

Donation Champion Award Bryan Garrett, Valley Medical, Spokane

Many aspects of a patient’s clinical course impact the number of organs able to be recovered for transplant, and we know that the heroic efforts made to save a patient’s life will also be beneficial to a donation outcome. This award honors both the life-saving work that occurs before donation and the top-quality, collaborative care during the donation process.

The Donation Champion Award is presented to one individual in our service area who demonstrates a commitment to improving donation outcomes and/or culture through their actions, time, and energy. The Donation Champion award winner is chosen from a pool of LifeSaver Award winners from the previous 18 months.

Donation Innovation Award Providence Alaska Medical Center

Excellence in Community Partnership Award Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office

The Donation Innovation Award is presented to one hospital in our service area that has demonstrated a commitment to careful evaluation of their organ donation processes and has taken specific steps to improve outcomes.

The Excellence in Community Partnership Award is presented to one organization in our service area that has demonstrated unwavering dedication to collaborating with LifeCenter Northwest to improve the lives of those in our community.

DONATION REFERRAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Timely referrals have a significant impact on donation outcomes. One of the single most important steps in donation is recognizing that a patient has met referral criteria, and making the call in a timely manner. Achieving and maintaining a high compliant referral rate is incredibly challenging and requires a strong commitment and effective processes.

ORGAN DONATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Many factors impact a hospital’s measurement of how many potential donors go on to donate. Hospitals with high donation rates tend to excel at recognizing referral criteria and making timely calls, maintaining the opportunity for donation, and collaborating with LifeCenter Northwest for a planned donation discussion. Achieving a 75% or greater donation rate is an impressive accomplishment, requiring vigilance and sustained commitment to ensure every possible donation opportunity is realized.

TISSUE DONATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Many factors impact tissue donation, including timely referrals, logistics, community education, and outreach. Hospital staff play an integral part in the process, and the average U.S. donation rate is around 50%. Few hospitals are able to achieve a 75% or greater tissue donation rate.
