Will going vegetarian really save water?
W
ouldn’t you know that just as we are hearing how dire our water shortage is, it rains—and rains again? I still wouldn’t bet on the weather, but at least we got some relief. Maybe we San Diegans simply love plants and nature too much not to have it rain. Perhaps collectively we reach a point that says, “Okay let’s interrupt paradise for a day and let it rain. We need it.” Continuing to look at water this month, I’ve been thinking about what a difference it would make if we were mostly vegetarian or vegan. I’d like to say I resolved it, but instead it led to questions that I haven’t heard addressed yet. The argument we’ve heard is true that we can save water—a lot of water—if we’re not using it to grow alfalfa to feed the cattle and cows that we eat. Counting the water livestock drink and the water to irrigate feed crops, it takes 52.8 gallons of water to make a quarter-pound hamburger, according to NPR.org. After looking at nationalchicken council. org, at beefUSA.org, at NPR.org and USDA figures, here’s what we eat: about 50 pounds of beef per capita per year—it’s a little over 100 pounds if you include pork. We eat a little less than 100 pounds of poultry. The national oceanic and atmospheric administration (NOAA) estimates it’s approximately 16 pounds of fish and shellfish per capita per year. It’s beef that uses the most water. Chicken about 1/3 the amount beef does, and fish get a free pass on this one. Nobody cares. I’ve seen different calculations and it’s hard to say which are best. There is no doubt, however, that we would save a lot of water if we eliminated eating beef, chicken and pork.
Eliminate Animals?
The challenge is how? We can stop eating them, but in order to save that 4 | The Life Connection
D June 2015
water we’d have to kill them off too. They still need food and water. To get a fresh start, really save water and move on the path of humane eating, we’d need to get rid of them first. If we are not eating these animals will their population increase, requiring even more food and water? Do we have to selectively kill off some? We know diets don’t work, so cutting back on feed makes little sense. What else can we do but give them water and feed? Taking a path that saves those animals will increase water usage. We could turn them loose, officially declare them sacred cows and release them closer to populated areas so people can feed them. It works in India, some say.
Replacement Food
We would also need to irrigate more to grow more food to replace the animal protein we won’t be eating. Right now there are approximately 16 million vegetarians in the United States, with about half that number being vegan. Percentage-wise that means 5% or 2.5% of our population. That means 90% of us would need a dramatic increase in other types of food. Is that doable? Since this won’t save water don’t forget that what could happen next is that we look at other foods that require a lot water to produce. We hear a lot about almonds and rice, but products that use the same or even more water than beef are olive oil, chocolate and cocoa powder. Careful what you ask for.
Bottom Line
If going vegan or vegetarian is both a humane and a water-saving approach as claimed, someone has to explain to me how it will work—rather than simply calculating how much water it takes to grow different foods and calling it a humane solution. —continued on page 30

what’s news Sacred Flame Fire Circle June 19–21 at Harrison Serenity Ranch
A weekend retreat for Summer Solstice in the majestic Palomar Mountains, is a contemporary adaptation of an ancient way to celebrate. We learn from our ancestors who lived in harmony with each other, the Earth, and to the energy of nature. It is time to return to the ways of the past, in order to forge a new path forward. The Sacred Fire Circle offers such a path. Combining drumming, rhythm, dancing, chanting, singing and creative personal expression, energy is raised in joyous celebration. While circling around a central fire under the stars, a sacred container is created for alchemical transformation. The fire energetically burns away all that is ready to be released and sends your healing prayers and blessings out to the Universe. Is your soul yearning for a deeper experience connecting to Source, to each other and to the wisdom within? Through the journey around the fire a profound shift in consciousness can occur, creating a feeling of freedom, ecstatic bliss, or deep realizations. You are invited to step away from your day-to-day lives, push through blocks and boundaries to break free of anything standing in the way of experiencing the full richness of who you are. The Sensation Behind
“Superfoods”
S
uperfoods have erupted in popularity recently; blueberries, pomegranate, kale and many others have all been donned with the title. But what exactly does this empowering moniker really mean? Born during a time inundated with preservative-filled fast foods and super-sized sugary drinks, the term “superfood" simply describes foods with comparatively and unusually high nutrient content - vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. There is no set list of superfoods, but there are quite a few usual suspects, including quinoa, cacao, and almonds along with all the aforementioned fruits and veggies. As far as healthfulness, superfoods provide consumers with the biggest bang for their buck, and buying local and organic ingredients is quickly becoming the norm amongst mindful consumers. Millennials have also jumped on the bandwagon, flocking to healthy foods and snacks that are both convenient and filling. While the exact definition of superfood can be a little vague, the idea behind it is simple: whole food supplementation and clean eating nourishment. It's been proven again and again that nutrients from natural sources are far more beneficial for the body, compared to synthetic supplements. Touted as the freshest nutrition bars ever created, Perfect Bar, a San Diego-based natural foods company has found much success with their convenient on-the-go protein bars and its approach to whole food supplementation. “Every ingredient in our product is real food, each with a slew of functional health benefits,” said CEO and Founder, Bill Keith. “More importantly, they’re a snack you can feel good about feeding your family and they simply taste delicious.” We put the spotlight on the Perfect Bar ingredient label to learn more about the superfoods inside the wrapper and the functional benefits behind the supermarket sensation. 7 | The Life Connection

Rose Hip - This little miracle provides a variety of antioxidants and it's been known to regulate sugar levels, which is especially helpful to diabetics. A little red fruit from the blossom of a wild rose plant, rose hip has also been known to improve joint mobility and serve as an anti-inflammatory. Flax Seed - High in fiber, flax seed promotes healthy skin and hair. These seeds are also high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which go a long way toward proper brain function, and they've been shown to lower cholesterol. Dulse - A lesser-known type of seaweed with lots of benefits including high in iodine for healthy thyroid function. Dulse is also a great source of vitamin B-12, which is especially important for vegans and vegetarians. Hemp Protein - Hemp seeds, when ground up, are an excellent source of protein containing 21 amino acids, which fuel are the fuel, along with carbs, that burn energy. The most common method of processing hemp seeds allows some minerals, vitamins and polyunsaturated fats found in the hull to be mixed in the final product. Chia Powder - Chia seeds are more like megafoods; these little seeds are chock-full of calcium, protein, and manganese. Chia also helps heart health. Alfalfa - A mineral-rich plant, in Arabic, it means “father of all foods.” Alfalfa is naturally high in essential vitamins, including A,D,E, and K, as well as all the B vitamins. It's also high in calcium, magnesium, and biotin. Kelp - Another friend from the ocean, this seaweed has a reputation of being a major source of iodine - Iodine is an energy booster, and is beneficial to the heart and circulatory system, and it promotes healing of bones. It's also high in vitamins C and E. Thanks to PerfectBar in San Diego! They have great products! Check out www.perfectbar.com for more information.

His Inspirational Roots Began in San Diego
J
acob Glass is a spiritual teacher/coach and metaphysical author. He teaches regularly in San Diego and the Los Angeles area, and recordings of his classes are sent all over the globe. He has been teaching for over 30 years and lecturing on New Thought and esoteric spirituality full-time since 1990. His sixth book, Affirmations 101 is being released in June. He has shared his stage with best-selling authors Debbie Ford, Marianne Williamson and Grammy winner Kenny Loggins. He has authored 5 books with more on the way soon. How would you describe the message you want to deliver to the people who read your books and attend your lectures and classes?
Actually this incredible journey begin in 1983 when I moved to San Diego in hopes of finding a job, finding a home and a personal relationship in which I could feel good about myself and who I was. At that point in my life, I was really struggling and kind of felt that I was slowly drowning in my own uncertainties. One day, I was sitting out by the pool reading Shirley Maclaine’s Out on a Limb. When a stranger saw the book and came up to me and asked me if I had heard of Terry Cole Whittaker. Actually, I had seen her on TV and was a little turned off by her. She just seemed way too happy and I thought it was all phony because there was no guilt or sin in her talks and no one could be that happy. But, as I watched on TV for six months, there was always one thing that she would say that made sense and resonated with me. So, eventually I went to her church services at the Hotel Cortez downtown. After that first service, I was converted and went full-blown into the philosophy going to Sunday service, Wednesday night service and took every class she had to offer. Everything was about achieving your dreams and everyone was so open and accepting. It was high energy, joyful and had great music. It was about being, doing and achieving the life you chose and wanted. I surrounded myself and immersed myself in the teaching for the next year and a half until I moved to L.A.
Over the years, you have become the public voice for the new thought movement. Was that 8 | The Life Connection

something you planned on or did that just develop spontaneously?
It actually started during a very challenging time in my own life when I went through the loss of people very dear to me. In the space of four years, my sister, my mother, my father and my boyfriend all died. During that same period, I had started lecturing at a Unity Church in Santa Barbara on the Course in Miracles also taught by Marianne Williamson and had a half hour show on Public Access radio. My classes grew from twelve people to sixty people and then to two hundred attendees. There happened to be an article in the local newspaper about me that appeared at the same time that Marianne Williamson appeared on Oprah. After that day, I was able to quit my day job at a talent agency which I hated and devoted myself full time to this teaching. This November marks my twenty-fifth year as a full time author and lecturer.
How would you describe the message you want to deliver to the people who read your books and attend your lectures and classes?
It’s funny that after all these years of teaching and writing, I’ve just recently discovered that the primary thing that shifts everything is GRATITUDE. Your own mind is your biggest problem since we are so used to thinking negatively about ourselves. The basic teaching of the Science of Mind philosophy is “Change your Thinking; Change your Life.” It may sound strange but you have to learn to constantly talk to yourself in a positive way. Gratitude shifts your mind to what is positive about your life and about you. I am referring to specific Gratitude, not the vaporous, general type of gratitude you’ve heard about. Be grateful for your body and the amazing biological machine that it is; your lungs, your eyes, your heart, your skin…everything that is the physical you, the container of the spiritual you. It is so easy to think about where “you blew it.” That doesn’t serve you or help you build the beautiful life that you want and deserve. Start the day by thinking of three things you can honor about yourself. My new book, Affirmations 101, which is due out in June, is designed to help you start yourself on a positive road for the day and re-find it during the day if you unknowingly step off the path of positive. I had to stop myself at only 101 affirmations because I didn’t want the book to become so —continued page 29

the year with a new TLC, and because “something” pulled us to be out this month, here we are with a December issue. There were several factors—and a lot of energy—that made that possible. I mentioned new ads that needed to run in December, but there were also our current and ongoing advertisers who quickly embraced the idea and were happy to hear we were printing. More than anything, at least on this level of existence that we usually participate with, what allowed us to come out were some great people—some new and some who’ve been around for a while—who helped get this issue out, are working on our expansion, or both. This month I want to thank Tim Britain, whom I often refer to as our graphics guy. Tim and I are starting year 26 together, and his contributions far exceed being our “graphics guy.” He’s designed and redesigned the magazine both in print and online; he designs a lot of the ads in the magazine; he’s designed the cover, off and on over the years; added his design skills to special projects; gives me computer advice; and even though it’s not part of his job description, he won’t allow himself to ignore it when he sees the language grossly misused and he edits. He approaches his “duties” with the magazine in a way that the volunteer might. When I say that, I think of some environments that I have been in that used both employed people and unpaid volunteers. I remember one instance when someone said, “You can 11 | The Life Connection D June 2015 always tell who the volunteers are. They are the ones who are willing to do things you can’t pay people enough money to do—and are willing to do it because of their commitment.”
Their passion to contribute and support whatever it is, and what they get from doing it seems to far outweigh and exceed the monetary compensation. He is definitely underpaid; but then again, perhaps th idea that he is reflects our accepted societal belief about wha compensation means and how we should be compensated Wouldn’t it be something if everyone in the work force op erated in a similar way? We do all need money, of course What I’m looking at is that to participate primarily becaus it’s something you want to see in the world is not where ev eryone comes from. I’ve most likely forgotten something that he contributes but you can see he’s someone I can talk to, he’s a great friend and partner in producing TLC. You know that because th pressure of deadlines has gotten to both of us at times, bu we adjust and keep moving. Thank you, Tim! In addition to his support, what’s been in the works th past several months is that several new people who appear to share that commitment and approach want to add their talent and passion to expanding TLC too. Hard to compare to 26 years of commitment, but the passion is obvious and welcome There are some things I’ve wanted to put in place for while, and we’re receiving a surge of energy to do them. Mor accurately I can say that we’ll discover exactly what that look like and where TLC is taking us as it reveals itself to us. Life After War: PTSD Rx By: David Gersten, M.D.
Over the last four months we have explored PTSD and its cause, namely war. We now return to look at treatment for veterans with PTSD (post-traumatic-stress-disorder). Coming Home
When we think of military men and women returning home from combat, we have images of happy reunions and peaceful lives. For some, the adjustment is joyous and easy. For others, coming home is challenging. PTSD is something that every fighting man and woman needs to be assessed for. Military men and women fighting a war are involved in warrelated activities 24 hours a day. Their buddies become their family, and their greatest concern on the battlefield is the safety of their buddies. Fighting men and women will do things that sound “crazy.” Dr. Larry Dossey, a battalion surgeon during the Vietnam War, writes of one very unusual event. One soldier, noticing that Dossey looked thirsty, ran through a battlefield with guns blazing and bullets flying by him. He was on a quest to locate a can of coke. He risked his life in order to provide his battlefield doctor a can of coke. During war, an individual’s life is 100% about war, watching out for the welfare of fellow warriors, and sometimes watching them getting wounded or killed. One warrior does everything he can to try to save a wounded warrior, hopefully dragging him to safety. As soon as that one action is taken care of, it’s time to dash back out into battle. When the guns have stopped, one’s mind is still focused on war. During Operation Desert Storm, those of our troops who were fighting in the hot deserts of Iraq constantly listened for the sound of scud missiles flying overDavid Gersten, M.D. practices Nutritional Medicine and Integrative Psychiatry out of his Encinitas office and can be reached at 760-633-3063. www.drdavidgersten.com

head. Sometimes those missiles struck the encampment. In the beginning, encampments in Iraq were equipped with biological and chemical weapon detectors and alarms. The alarms were going off so frequently that, eventually, many of the bases turned off those detectors. Imagine what happens inside a person’s head when he leaves combat and returns home. The reality that was their life for 24 hours a day is suddenly gone. A person has adjusted to being at war. There is a kind of ecstasy or spiritual high that warriors experience (see “The Religion of War” The Life Connection, May 2015). That spiritual high is now gone, and a warrior suddenly is home with family, trying to adjust to a world that is entirely different than the one they had gotten used to. For a while, returning warriors can feel like aliens. They may experience a void, a profound emptiness, even though a new life is beginning. The symptoms of PTSD are most likely to surface in these conditions in which one’s previous reality has completely changed. There is a disconnection, but fighting men and women are pretty stoic people. Discussing their thoughts and feelings of being totally relocated into a new reality is a hard thing to do.
What is PTSD?
PTSD is characterized by an exaggerated fear response that doesn’t extinguish over time and can’t be inhibited in safe environments. The symptoms fall into three categories. 1) Re-experiencing symptoms 2) Avoidance symptoms 3) Hyperarousal Re-experiencing symptoms include: flashbacks, nightmares, and frightening thoughts. Words, objects, or situations can trigger the re-experiencing of war trauma. Avoidance symptoms include: feeling emotionally numb, losing interesting in previously enjoyable activities, strong feelings of guilt or depression, and staying away from places and events that are reminders of the war trauma. Hyperarousal symptoms include: Being easily startled, feeling tense or edgy, having trouble sleeping, and/or having angry outbursts.
Initial Treatment
When vets return from war, a thorough psychological evaluation to assess PTSD should be available to all. Individual psychotherapy should be available to those who need it. Group therapy is important so that vets can connect with other vets, who know what war is, and who may be suffering with similar symptoms. Once a vet has been diagnosed with PTSD, he may receive anti-depressant medication for depression, sleeping pills for insomnia, benzodiazepines for anxiety, and anti-psychotic medications for psychosis or extreme anxiety. I’ve worked with many vets with PTSD who have been using marijuana to treat their PTSD. These men found that medications didn’t cure the problem and often had unpleasant side effects. In general these vets found that marijuana was more effective than medications for anxiety, depression, insomnia, and pain. There is growing research regarding marijuana and PTSD. One symptom of PTSD is “trauma reminders.” These experiences, such as a particular sound or sudden loud noise, can trigger PTSD and make an individual feel as if he is back in the actual battlefield. Early marijuana studies thus far are showing that it diminishes the exaggerated response to trauma reminders.
Oxytocin, the Love Hormone
The “love hormone,” oxytocin is in therapeutic trials for depression, and research has begun on its use for PTSD. A lack of social support is one of the most consistent risk factors for PTSD. These patients recover faster with proper social support. Oxytocin facilitates social binding and connection. In one study, a single oxytocin dose decreased the amygdala’s reactivity (and fear response) to common PTSD triggers. Oxytocin increases a sense of interpersonal connection. Most researchers are recommending that oxytocin be administered at the beginning of a psychotherapy session, with careful guidance. Oxytocin usually decreases anxiety, depending on a number of factors. The liberal therapeutic use of oxytocin is not wise, in my opinion – although it offers many potential benefits for a wide range of emotional problems. Oxytocin helps people feel connected, and disconnection is a big part of PTSD.
Seven Principles for Returning Vets Dr. Larry Dossey, author of 13 | The Life Connection
D June 2015
“War: A Vietnam Memoir” (Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine; 1999;5) has written eloquently about his Vietnam War experience. His advice includes the Seven Principles that lead to lasting, transformational healing. Unless otherwise specified, words in quotes are from Dr. Dossey’s article. Principle 1: “The pain, anguish, rage, fear that each warrior has experienced will never ago away until the warrior directly faces them.” Principle 2: “Facing these ‘sadnesses’ is one of the most difficult and lonely battles returning warriors will ever fight.” Vets can seek the help of psychologists, psychiatrists, and fellow warriors, but ultimately facing the pain is a solitary experience. Third Principle: “Healing may occur suddenly and unexpectedly.” The timetable is different for each person. Fourth Principle: Recovery and healing often involves a radical transformation. “This healing invariably involves the turning of weakness into strength and ignorance into wisdom.” Fifth Principle: One must give up “Staying stuck in the Why me? Syndrome, resentment over an interrupted career, or anger about the unfairness of life.” Dossey concludes that anger must be given up if one is to heal. Sixth Principle: “You must be patient as a sick man and confident as a convalescent”… “You are the doctor too… But there are in every illness many days when the doctor can do nothing but wait.” (German poet, Rainer Maria Rilke). Seventh Principle: “After your own healing, extend —continued on page 24

Living With Intent An Interview with Mallika Chopra By Amelia Leigh, M.S.
I
n her new book, Living With Intent: My Somewhat Messy Journey to Purpose, Peace, and Joy (April 2015;Harmony Books), Mallika shares a practical yet deeply personal look at her year long journey to discover some workable answers to feeling overwhelmed. “When you realize you need help, you can access a world of wisdom. This was the whole purpose of developing my website, I want to help people find support. Intents are expressions of who we aspire to be physically, emotionally and spiritually. I learned this early on from my father (Deepak Chopra),” Mallika courageously shares.
a mother, and being pregnant on 9/11. Realizing this world has a lot of pain, suffering, and questions. In addition to the opportunity for joy and love. This was a pivotal point for me where I began reflecting on my life. Where did I come from? What are the values I would like to teach my children? Now with this book, and my kids are older (I have a 13 year old and a 10 year old). Realizing my life gets so busy. We are running around, trying to balance work and a family life. Really having lost the sense of who I am. This current book Living with Intent was about reflecting on the core values I want to live with. What does balance mean to me? What does it mean to lead a life with an intent and purpose?
Tell me a little bit about how you got to this point in your life and decided to write Living There are many benefits of meditation. How has meditation brought change into your life? With Intent. I grew up in a household where my father was a huge influence; In terms of access to people, great teachers, knowledge. And my mother who is a very stabilizing and anchoring force in my life. To me, she represents the ultimate representation of a mother. At the same time, my brother and I were not really involved in this field. It was what my “dad did”. More recently, a turning point for me was in becoming 14 | The Life Connection
D June 2015
Absolutely. I learned how to meditate when I was nine, but am the first to admit that I am not the most regular meditator. I have gone through phases in my life where I meditate regularly, and then phases where I don‘t meditate at all. For me, recommitting to that practice, helped anchor me. Give me those moments of silence to experience who I am, beyond the constant to do list, tasks, and insecurities. Reconnect
with self and silence. For me, it has been a very important and powerful reminder, through the practice. When I am meditating, I feel so much more anchored and connected. In control of my life. When I talk about intent, it seems to be a theme in my life. My father would ask us to repeat the following phrase: I am responsible for what I see. I choose the feelings I experience And set the goals I will achieve Everything that seems to happen to me, I ask for and receive as I have asked. Then my father would tell us to ask for something. My brother and I would think an Atari game or vacation. My father would wait patiently and then ask what about love, connection, passion, inspiration and purpose. We were taught as early as young children. Ask for the qualities that would make our lifes’ more full. Much different than the materialistic things. Who do we aspire to be, as members of society and mother earth. To me, that is what intents are and how to practice and set goals. It is who we aspire to be, members of society and mother earth. To me, that is what intent is.
How can we shift peoples awareness, to start looking at the quality of life versus materialistic items?
As a society, when we incorporate more of these practices. Of mindfulness and reconnection with our true self, it happens naturally. I don’t believe one should be judgmental about what people are asking for in their life. The first part of my book is about incubation. Really about reconnecting with ourselves. Asking ourselves questions like “Who am I? What do I want? How can I serve?” When you ask people from that place of authenticity, real genuine trust and silence. Listen to your answers. I find that most people, when you look deep inside, are looking for love, connection, some sense of purpose. So it comes naturally once we start to do many of these practices.
Very true. I see that you have 6 steps to living a healthier, joyful and more purposeful life.
I spent a lot of time, years really, thinking about these steps. I wanted to put them together around the acronym I-N-T-E-N-T: I – Incubation - When we are having a baby, we have 9 months to incubate the soul. When we plant a seed. Often, we don’t know the beautiful flower it will grow into. Trust that with time and water and sunlight, it will grow into something special. Who am I? What do I want? How can I serve? N – Notice – Internal Dialogue, Noticing the people, places, and circumstances that we find ourselves in everyday. So every day there is an opportunity for growth, happiness and joy. Often we get so mired with our own self-dialogue 15 | The Life Connection

and insecurities that we don’t event notice what is happening around us. T – Trust – Intuition, the Universe will help guide us along the way. We trust that when we ask ourselves the questions, we are trusting that we are going beyond the ego and external expectations. Trusting that the answers are the right ones. Even if our ego said something else. E – Express Our Intent - I am a big believer in stating what you want. Taking ownership of your desires. Admit it to yourself. Once you actually put that stake in the ground you begin the mechanics of making it happen or real in your life. N – Nurture - Relationships. We get so much support from people in our life. Start to honor that. But we also have to nurture ourselves. In this whole process I realize how busy I am taking care of my children and family. I have all these excuses of why I am so busy. That I had forgotten to take care of myself. So nurture ourselves as well. T – Take Action - We think if we just say what we want, the Universe will take care of the details. I believe we must really take action. It isn’t just given to us. It is a time for setting smart goals. Intent is all about momentum. So taking action is an important step as well. I don’t necessarily see them as linear, but a flow of incorporating all of these aspects into our journey.
Was that your purpose in creating Intent.com? I grew up with the notion of stating intents. That was something natural for me. So when we started intent.com, I wanted to create a social media platform where people can —continued on page 27

TRADITIONAL & HEALTHY SURROGATE MOM WANTED:
I mean this with full respect. I am sincerely committed to proceeding in the most conscious, considerate, caring, and supportive way possible.
I live in San Diego county. I seek a healthy, positive woman to be a Traditional Surrogate Mom and bear a child naturally, free of chemicals. Willing to pay good amount (also including extra for healthy food
& supplements/herbs, optional midwives, massage, etc. + more if willing to do any breastfeeding). You can choose to be completely non-involved after birth to being involved, at any future time and to whatever amount you wish, as the surrogate mom or separate parent up to co-custody. I would retain legal parenthood/primary physical custody. Regardless of surrogate mom’s optional involvement after birth from none to co, I would be legally 100% economically responsible. I certainly am open to the child having more than one source of love, nurturement, and being cherished.
I am sincere, tested very healthy in all aspects, holistic, deeply caring, love kids, have time, commitment, heartfelt appreciation, and resources. I am a heterosexual man (not that gender preference should matter), who wants to have a genetic child and who cares greatly. I am a giving person, who rarely asks for anything, and would honor this as the ultimate blessing, privilege, & assistance. I would be very supportive of as natural a pregnancy as possible. That would include a healthy lifestyle and as natural childbirth as the surrogate mother is comfortable with - i.e. midwives, your significant other (and family) if you have one, myself, anyone else important to you, and with conscious doctor/hospital as back-up. Regarding a healthy lifestyle: I could be extra supportive there as I have therapeutically worked with many pregnant women and post-partum families – including with nutrition, herbs, massage therapies, and other natural therapies Again, there are many areas of pregnancy that I can be extra helpful. I am committed to doing this in the most conscious, considerate, supportive way possible both for you and to bring another loving, fulfilling soul and spirit into full being!! I would love to have one or two genetic children to love, nurture, & care for. Thank you for your consideration of becoming a surrogate angel. Sincere inquiries only: cherishing spirit@gmail.com “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.” Khalil Gibran

Unlimited Possibilities By Roger Cavnaugh, PhD
T
hese TLC pages over the past three decades have chronicled the development of a more inclusive understanding of what healing is and shown in a myriad of ways how healing is related to our personal growth, our spirituality and the larger world around us. Beginning with a challenge to the pill culture and the domination of allopathic medicine practiced as an impersonal technology rather than a human art, the many pioneers of alternative and complementary therapies have stepped outside the bounds of the constrictive and frankly often ineffective confines of conventional medical thinking to illuminate new insights and approaches to the mind-body connection; involve patients more actively, respectfully and responsibly in their healing; and create new nature based approaches and techniques that are not only usually less expensive than standard medical practices but also minimize or eliminate harmful side effects. In addition, this evolving new integral paradigm acknowledges and engages the core psychological dynamics and spiritual potentials of practitioners as well as those who seek healing; brings greater compassion and dignity to all healing, especially the processes of birth and death; overcomes western cultural biases to include approaches and methods from previously excluded native cultures and eastern traditions; and has highlighted the importance of beliefs, values and lifestyles in creating balance and well being. All of these innovations have contributed to a much more humane and effective therapeutic culture with more possibilities for healing, more hope and more comprehensive responses to distress and disease. These changes have also seeded the larger culture with more innovative and more collaborative responses to suffering; provided new paths and opportunities for personal empowerment; enriched the sense of what we can become beyond living out established but narrow and passive social roles. They affirmed the importance of our innate sense of spirituality in facing one’s issues; helped us move away from treating diseases, deficiencies and symptoms to an emphasis on our inner resources, personal gifts and individual strengths; grounded our commitment to the values of diversity and collaborative effort in genuine multicultural perspectives; moved us towards seeing ourselves as an integral part of Nature that is usually best supported by natural healing methods; taken the mask off the financial interests the status quo has in limiting healing to conventional means; and pointed to the politics and community context which impact our health and health care. Acknowledging what has been achieved in the healing arts highlights how our recent responses to every kind of disorder accompanying the human journey has been an intensely creative accomplishment which has changed our culture, our planet and us all for the better. I firmly believe this foreshadows our success in dealing with pressing global issues. Owning this history of success and accomplishment in the healing 18 | The Life Connection

disciplines, both as practitioners and healees, affirms we have many more resources, are decisively more confident, and possess much greater wisdom with which to meet whatever arises as we move through the crises of our times. I am writing this column to provide a forum for looking ahead to the next few years so we better understand the opportunities available amidst what seems to be a world out of control and the failures of our institutions across many sectors of our life. A growing number of us have a surging inner sense that the next few years ahead will present us with fundamental challenges that are the critical circumstances that will impel a planetary transformation. What is coming to us is not yet defined; however, I would like to suggest a metaphor from the shamanic work that is part of my practice as a psychologist. Shamanic initiation often occurs as dismemberment in non-ordinary reality. The shaman experiences the elements of his or her sense of self being taken apart and dissolving into the universe to be re-membered, under the watchful gaze of a benevolent teacher, into a new combination of energies that brings about rebirth and renewal. As long as we have faith in ourselves and in Life, understanding that there is an ordered and purposeful unfolding to our evolution, we can undergo whatever coming apart is necessary for our healing and the gathering of the wisdom and skills necessary to recreate the world much more to our heart’s desire. Perhaps it’s enough now to claim our history of growth and achievement, and check with our own knowing to see what sense of immediacy we may have or not have about the coming circumstances that may ask us to renew our communities much as we have renewed ourselves. Next issue we can look more specifically at what’s ahead. Roger Cavnaugh, PhD is a psychologist and healer whose specialty is relationships, major life changes crises, and personal development. Earthing Earthing is a technique that helps you balance yourself using direct contact with the natural frequencies of Earth. Earthing (or Grounding) restores a lost electric signal to the body that seems to stabilize the complicated circuitry of our essentially-electric body. Being barefoot on the grass, for example, will replenish electrons, the negatively charged particles that make up electricity. These electrons are essential for the optimal functioning of the body and are a source of the power of antioxidants. Our built-in selfregulating and self-healing mechanisms become more effective. By being barefoot on the grass for example, there are improvements all over the body. Better blood flow. Less pain and inflammation. More energy. Deeper sleep. We all resonate at specific vibrations, with each being connected to an emotion and disease. There has been a lot of research into balancing our frequencies and the effects it has on our life and health. The Earth’s electric field is the master clock that sets all Earthing maximizes the power of the repair mechanisms of the body by providing the electrons the body needs to power its cells. Since the invention of plastic in the late 1950’s, which led to plastic soles to our shoes, we lost contact with the Earth’s electric field, the master clock that sets our biological clocks. The moment we touch Earth, our body resonates at the Earth’s low frequencies (less than 30 Hz), just like a marching band marches at the frequency set by the drummer. The 60 Hz electric fields we live in tend to make our body vibrate at that frequency, making us frantic. Earthing prevent that effect by making the body resonate at the calming frequencies of the Earth.
Inflammation and Our Immune System
The contemporary immune system is being overwhelmed. The usual suspects in the scientific debate include genetics, poor diet, air pollution, obesity, and physical inactivity. Inflammation is now believed to be the underlying cause of more than eighty chronic illnesses, and more than half of Americans currently suffer from one or more of them. When the body is in contact with the Earth, inflammation is kept in check by the immune system who now has access to the primary antioxidant (electrons of the Earth) needed to quench inflammation and prevent it from turning into chronic inflammation.
Interview with Dr. Gaetan Cheveliar ~ How long should someone ground per day?
At least 30 minutes if you are healthy, more if you have some health problems. 19 | The Life Connection
D June 2015
~ Is it better to walk around, stand still or even lie down on the earth? Should we lie naked on the earth?
Best grounding is to be naked submerged in the ocean because its water is conductive. Next best is wet grass and then wet soil. Dry sand or earth is not very good. Wood, synthetic carpets, rubber, shoes, and asphalt will prevent grounding completely. The more skin in contact with the earth the better. However, the soles of our feet are equipped with an acupuncture point that is at the end of the kidney meridian. The hands will also ground you very well. This is the natural way for the body to get its electrons from the earth.
~ Is there any way to amplify the effects?
The best way is to use patches because they have the most conductivity. If someone has inflammatory pain somewhere, such as an inflamed knee or elbow, putting a patch there will release the pain in minutes. In general most debilitating pains are inflammatory pain and grounding will help decrease these pains if not eliminate them completely.
~ What is the process by which the human body benefits from grounding?
This is the billion-dollar question. We are still researching the exact mechanisms involved. We know that it involves the immune system, the circulatory system, the meridian system and also the living matrix, a network of the continuous molecular fabric of the organism connecting all organs of the body, consisting of fascia, the other connective tissues, cytoskeleton, and DNA. According to our current theory, electrons coming into the body can be stored and moved anywhere inside the body to where they need to be mainly by the living matrix, which also contains the meridians.

\\\ How To Think New Thoughts ///
By Catherine Newhart
I
f you aren’t getting what you want in your life, now may be a great time to learn to create some new thoughts that will allow you to adapt to new situations and succeed in life. Taking the time to focus on what we are going to think about and the result we really want to create BEFORE we speak can create marvelous positive results. Of course, spontaneity is extremely valuable, and sometimes our best thoughts happen when we aren’t thinking and planning our every word. It is a matter of results. We outgrow many of our thoughts. As we experience new situations, we may discover some of our old thoughts, which were once useful, no longer work for us. When we were young, we might have thought that being loud and demanding or ‘pouting' would get us what we wanted and often did. Most adults have discovered that kind of thinking and behavior is counter productive. The thinking (aka thoughts) behind our words and our tone matter as much as what we say. “HELLO” said in a warm, kind way with thoughts of happiness usually evokes a positive response. “HELLO” said with thoughts of disrespect, superiority or in a loud, harsh tone will create a negative response because it is upsetting. Learning to think new thoughts helps us achieve success and can be fun and easy. Sometimes our thoughts are based on incomplete or misinformation. For instance, you are at the water cooler at work and another person has a health issue about which you don’t know. You have thoughts that the person doesn’t like you based on the fact that each time you approach when they are at the water cooler, they quickly turn around and leave. Of course, you never want to pry, but in general, asking yourself and others good, well formed questions is one way to get more information and clear up any confusion and as a result, think new positive thoughts. For your peace of mind, it might be good to smile and say something like “I’ve noticed that each time I approach the water cooler, you leave quickly. Is there a reason?" Many of our thoughts are linked to other thoughts and occur almost like wave patterns. If you hear the word spot, you might first think of a place to sit; then a stain on a favorite item; and then perhaps your favorite dog. Certainly, when we are communicating, we want our thoughts linked from one to another to create a conversational thought pattern. However, you may discover some thought patterns are not ones you want. Once you discover a thought pattern that doesn’t seem to work for you, interrupt it and redirect your thoughts and actions by creating your own Pattern Interrupter (aka “channel changer”) that is a combination of something visual, auditory and kinesthetic. I will give you a great PI example. A child at a restaurant is acting out or upset. By simply drawing part of a heart, a butterfly, a car or ??? on a paper napkin with a pen and showing the incomplete design to the child; offering the pen to the child while asking if they will HELP you finish the design, you have successfully interrupted their (thoughts) pattern of behavior and made them shift focus. This PI is VISUAL (Drawing a design), AUDITORY (asking the child a question) and also KINESTHETIC (offering the pen for the child to take it and use it to draw). You can create one or more PI’s that work well for you with images, sounds, or feelings. One of my PI’s is a magnificent, soft 22 | The Life Connection

petaled, sweet smelling, perfect yellow rose. When I find myself in a unacceptable thought pattern, I just think “PI” and I will shift my focus to that and immediately stop thinking about what I was thinking before. A PI can be a very valuable tool. STEP 1) Use your PI to interrupt your thoughts, shift your focus and begin to allow yourself time to think new thoughts. STEP 2) Think these questions to yourself:
• Why am I really saying what I am saying? (what is my agenda?) • What result do I really want? • Can I ask a question rather than make a statement? • Can a really well formed question provide important information? • Can that information help me formulate a way to say something in such a way that it WILL create my desired result?
STEP 3) Ask yourself HOW would someone you know and admire create new thoughts about the subject on which you are focused? STEP 4) “Virtually” ask someone you admire to answer these questions FOR YOU from their point of view, with their thoughts. STEP 5) Expand your repertoire of possible new thoughts by reading famous quotes as well as books or articles about great leaders to learn how they think/thought.

Zatik from page 9
Zatik, means “ladybug” in Armenian, and this beautiful insect symbolizes spring, beauty, and regeneration. They also remove unwanted pests without using any toxic pesticides. Co-owner Garik refers to the lady bug as a “good guy.” Calling their company Zatik is a nod to the ladybug, and symbolizes Zatik’s “good guy” values in an increasingly toxic cosmetics industry. Zatik products are in the process of being listed on the EWG’s Skin Deep database, where you’ll find the validation of Zatik’s commitment to natural products without toxicity. In fact, sustainability and upholding quality of life for people and the planet is an important value throughout Zatik, embedded in all of their practices — from ecoconscious, environmentally safe packaging and materials to generating only biodegradable and recyclable waste. And just as ladybugs are considered beneficial for the ecosystem, may the values and vision of Zatik serve as a model to inspire other entrepreneurs! compassion to those fellow warriors who remain in conflict, whose understanding is not yet complete. Give something back by trying to help them.”
Thawing the Freeze Response
It is as important to understand psychological and spiritual issues of PTSD as it is to understand biology. The freeze response is central to PTSD and involves biology and psychology. We’ve known about the fight-orflight response since it was discovered by Harvard physiologist Walter Cannon in 1915. Dr. Peter Levine wrote about the freeze response in his book “Waking the Tiger” (1997). When a prey animal (a gazelle, for example) is about to be caught by a predator (a cheetah, for example), or has already been caught and overcome, it has one survival strategy left. It can fall into the freeze response, in which the gazelle lies still on the ground, its consciousness has “checked out,” and it looks dead. A predator won’t attack a dead animal. The freeze response lasts 4 to 5 minutes. If the cheetah can survive for 5 minutes, at that point it becomes conscious, slowly struggles to its feet, starts to tremble…and shake. Then, it’s back to normal and can run away. For prey, survival mechanisms are fight, flight, and freeze. When children are traumatized by a parent, they usually believe that it must be their fault, and not the parent’s fault. A story line begins for the child, which prevents
the freeze response from “thawing.” That person may live with the freeze response their entire life. A traumatized adult, who grew up in a relatively healthy home, will have an easier time recovering than will a traumatized adult who was first traumatized as a child. A person living with the freeze response may feel: 1) numb, mentally or physically, 2) paralyzed, mentally or physically, and/ or 3) dissociated. The freeze response is almost certainly part of the PTSD that war veterans experience. Numbness is “feeling nothing at all.” Dissociation is “feeling disconnected…from Self, others, Nature, and/or God.” Severe dissociation is like living on Earth as if you came from another planet. You feel disconnected from everything, which is a very painful condition. Brain research on the freeze response implicates the amygdala as an important part. The amygdala is the main part of fear memory storage. Adult survivors of abuse or neglect have an amygdala that reacts too quickly to minor triggers. The frontal lobes are the thinking, rational part of the brain. In PTSD the frontal lobes have less influence in our emotional response to triggers than is normal, and less ability to balance the often-rapid response of the amygdala. Dr. Levine, after discovering the freeze response, developed a psychotherapy modality called “Somatic Experiencing” (SE), which is a powerful treatment for healing the freeze response. SE, as a treatment for PTSD, is being researched at a number of VA Hospitals, with good results. 25 | The Life Connection

Many people want a doctor to do all the work, but mental-emotional healing arises out of a true healing partnership. Doctors can provide a number of treatments. While these treatments help alleviate the symptoms of PTSD, the individual still has to deal with The Seven Principles that wounded warriors must pass through in order to move from fear and anger – to forgiveness and love. One thing that we must do to help our veterans is to make sure that good jobs are waiting for them. They are disciplined, endure tough training, are used to high levels of focus and concentration, and are hard workers. Part of the void that veterans face upon returning home is the lack of work. They need work that is commensurate with their skills and specific training. That work needs to be meaningful. Fighting a war is highly meaningful. It provides a sense of purpose. We need to work at this until all our veterans are provided meaningful work. Lack of meaning is one trigger that can cause PTSD to manifest. There is no magic for the healing from war-induced PTSD, but healing is available. We’ve reviewed a number of treatments for vets with PTSD. Scientific research, such as oxytocin studies, is moving forward and future treatments are promising. If you or someone you know needs help with PTSD, you can contact the U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs at www.ptsd. va.gov or call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255.

state their intent. What is so exciting about what’s grown over there is the power of support. And what I learned from working on this book as well, is when you state your intent; this entire community comes out to celebrate with you and encourage you. With that comes so much more momentum and motivation. You are connected to other people as well. I am thrilled how the community has evolved. To not only be a platform to state what we want, but where we create community as well. So much of my journey has been inspired by the reality of the fact we all have pain and challenges in our life. Part of that is then taking the steps to move forward in a new direction.
Internal dialogue is something everyone deals with. Your own mind chatters. Do you have any tools (other than meditation) to help you in your thoughts or actions with others?
When I was young, another exercise my dad had us do was to go through a day without criticizing, condemning, or complaining. That was a powerful practice in our lives. It is natural to complain, so this makes you realize how easy it is to be constantly complaining. The power was when we shift our internal dialogue. I noticed while on this book journey that so much of my internal dialogue was I am stressed, I am tired, I’m hungry. This was the conversation going —next page 27 | The Life Connection

on in my head. The first step is recognizing it. Dr. Dan Segal, who I interviewed in the book, referred me to an exercise he does where you name it to tame it. What happens in our brains, once we notice the dialogue, we naturally begin to also shift our automatic fight-flight mode and what is happening in our brain. Notice what the internal dialogue is. Notice what is happening and if you are reacting to fear or anxiety. You will naturally begin to shift.
How can we stop being negative?

thick that it would be hard to quickly pick up and read the affirmation of the day; that’s why each affirmation is only 1 page long. I believe that 101 days of positive thinking is more than enough time to retrain your thinking. From my own readings and from just living my life, I’ve also come to discover that your Feelings are your Emotional Guidance System. The Science of Mind philosophy teaches how to be Happy, while many other religions teach that you have to suffer to find the Kingdom of heaven. If it feels good and if it feels right, then you’re going in the right direction. There’s a difference between the feeling and the form. What do you want your life to feel like; what do you want your job to feel like? Concentrate on the feeling and The Law of Attraction will bring it to you. The feelings plus the Law of Attraction equals the form.
How has your ministry changed over time?
It interesting that you should ask that question, because this is a realization that I’ve just come to recently. Mostly, I speak to smaller groups on a regular basis and large groups occasionally. I used to judge myself by how large the group was that I was speaking to as if it was a reflection of who I was as a person. I’ve learned that it is no less satisfying talking to a group of twenty people than it is in front of a group of five hundred. I tried to force my audience to come away with something that would be helpful and maybe life 29 | The Life Connection

altering. I used to say during the talk, “If you remember anything, then remember this.” Now I know that what will have an effect on the listener is up to them and I don’t judge myself if the group is smaller or different than I anticipated. I really just talk to myself out loud and anyone sitting in the room is invited to listen (or not).
What do you want your audience to go away with?
Well, there are six things I hope they get from my talks: 1) Everything shows up at the right time 2) Everyone has their own unique journey 3) Take the best, leave the rest 4) I pan for gold looking for nuggets of spiritual truths for the listener

5) Each person is individualized and unique 6) It comes down to TRUST YOURSELF I also want to direct the listeners to my website, www.jacobglass.com where the novice or seasoned spiritual seeker can find valuable resources like free downloads, recommendations regarding books and a variety of meditations, along with other tools to assist one along the path.
What books would you recommend for our readers
I’m constantly reading and usually several books at the same time. A few of the books I would definitely recommend are Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich; Joseph Murphy, Think Yourself Rich; Ernest Holmes,

This Thing Called You; Catherine Ponder, The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity; Ernest Holmes, 365 Science of Mind; and Stuart Wilde, The Sixth Sense. Of course I strongly would recommend any of my own books. I published five books, with the sixth Affirmations 101, coming out next month. My other books include: The Miracle Workers Handbook, You were Born for Greatness, Starve a Bully, Feed a Champion, The Crabby Angels Chronicles and my first book, Invocations, calling Forth the Light that Heals. I highly recommend any and all of these books. Jacob Glass currently speaks on the third Saturday of the month, at VISION, A Center for Spiritual Living on Mission Gorge Rd in San Diego. The program starts at 10 am.
Amelia’s Note Welcome to the Summer!! The longest day of the year is the solstice, also known as they day of my birth. Reflecting on another year that has passed and the intentions I plan to manifest gives rise to slight nervous anticipation, naturally. Once again I am given the chance to practice the tools that I have acquired over my journey thus far. So, living in the present moment, what is it that I yearn for? Well world peace of course. Beyond that, what am I contributing in this chapter of my life? As I have stated before, we are all on a path to creating happiness. Although it is the journey, not the destination. So what can we do to truly let go and enjoy the process that is unfolding beneath our eyes. Let’s start with the 4 Agreements:
By Amelia Leigh, M.S. others I see. That is one of the reasons I have set forth to inspire others to be...better. Think of how much better it is to see some one smile than cry. What is it going to take to make us realize we all have the individual power to make a positive difference in our lives and beyond? Each one of us on this Earth is witnessing the same sun and stars. Our view may be different from day to day, but we are all given another chance to view a different perspective. We can’t control others, although we can control ourselves. Be the

Publisher’s Point from page 4 What’s More Humane?
Perhaps looking closer at this will help us define moral and humane better. Are we good and moral people, judging solely by what we eat? Or is eating and nourishment part of life? I think a lot of people would automatically consider that not eating any kind of animal to be a higher moral ground or more sensitive. Is it? Compared to what? A pioneer in researching plant sensitivity, the late Cleve Backster, who lived in San Diego, revealed a lot of information that should make us think again. An expert in using and teaching how to use lie detectors, he decided to hook up his Dracaena to a galvanometer. He was curious how long it took water to travel to the leaves of the plant. Next he decided to go into another room and get some matches so he could burn a leaf and see the plants reaction. The second he had that thought, the galvanometer needle started jumping erratically—just from his thinking about it.
In Comparision
There’s a dog I know that lives down the street named Finn. He resides with some friends of mine. When I stop by he’s always happy and excited to see me. It doesn’t matter what mood I’m in when I arrive, he’s happy to see me. Perhaps always being happy that way is a great quality, it’s inspiring to see. It’s also true that sometimes he is not really sensitive to the environment around him, i.e., my mood. Compare that to plants. They feel our feelings. They recognize us. They respond with horror if we are hurt. They’ve been found to react to “scary stories” told at night with the lights down low. What animal does all that? We’ve all heard that they respond well when we speak positively to them. They even talk to me every once in a while, although with a limited vocabulary. That happens when I walk into a room and hear a clear, “give me water.” Who else would say such a thing? And I know right were to water. They communicate or send signals to other plants in several different ways. They provide us medicines and their flowers add a great touch to special events that lift our spirit. Plants are sensitive to x-rays, TV and ultraviolet rays. They hear sounds most animals can’t, appreciate music, see more colors, and smell a wider range of fragrances than we do. They also scream when uprooted from the ground—and when we cook them. I’ve wondered at what point they “die.” We’d like to think that leaving a small footprint on the planet is good—and possible—but plainly put, simply being on the planet is an intrusion—to someone or something. Whatever we decide to eat, it has feelings—and we have to eat. So who’s “feelings” are we going to hurt? What’s the “right” choice? Is there a right one, or just a personal choice? As we look at this closer, perhaps we will look more at what is important, what is a moral or humane life—beyond what we decide to kill and eat—because we all do that.
