The World Summit of Integrative Medicine 2015 Wah! The Healing Concert returns in September Rain Water Collection When “The” rain came in July, without any real organized system I collected 260 gallons of water in buckets and trashcans. That doesn’t count the 96 gallons that leaked out of two containers with small leaks. I decided it was time to get serious about it. Does collection make sense here? What could we do? Greetings

More Rain, More Shootings, Unusual Times
V
ery unusual July we just had. Good and bad. Such is life, at first glance at least. For one thing it rained and then rained again! We had as much rain in two days as we normally have for the whole month of July. I was going to write about rainwater collection and instead collected rainwater. After I installed a new roof and solar panels I didn’t replace the rain gutter on the solar panel side of the house. I discovered the cool San Diego nights causes condensation that drips off the roof onto my plants. I like it. When it rains I put buckets out and those big trashcans that you can no longer put out on the curb. You can’t just collect the water because algae and mosquitoes will grow in it— but I’ll get into that next month. I did collect 260 gallons of rainwate— not counting an additional 96 gallons that leaked out. This month the goal is to get a better system. I was planning on going in different directions this issue. One was writing about rainwater collection and the other was responding to recent articles and editorials about how terrible an investment solar panels will soon be. I couldn’t let that one go by without a response, but then when the rains came, I did. Rain changes everything, doesn’t it? What also came along was the Water Summit. I was surprised how much time it took to write that article. There was a lot thrown at us it in a few hours and getting the facts and figures straight took a while. Read that for a perspective on how San Diego is doing compared to the rest of the state. I think I’ve got everything about water in there that I could fit except how to walk on it—but maybe next month. 4 | The Life Connection
Shootings
On another note, it’s difficult at times to maintain the perspective and confidence in the idea that we are evolving, and that when we hear of injustice it’s an opportunity to correct it—and we will. How many people have to be shot in confrontations with the police before things change? It’s sad. It does show us that we have that part of the brain—and it’s there to protect us from threats— that we can too easily slip into when life looks dangerous. That fight or flight mechanism is just too easy for human beings to retreat to in stressful situations. When we see policemen losing control we don’t really know, immediately, whether they are being consciously mean or prejudiced, or if that protective, animal part of the brain taken over. The police don’t know how far someone standing up for their rights will go. It’s hard not to take things as personal threats. The idea that I think we’d all like to embrace is that we can pause for a second before we react. Using that pause moment to assess the threat. In the case of the police, not unlike soldiers in combat, there comes a moment when you have to identify how serious the threat is, and whether or not there is one. Some people handle that better than others. Few handle it well the first time it happens. Some people get to that place too quickly. I wonder if that isn’t what we are seeing—perhaps from both sides. It’s not the ultimate solution, but certainly all of us have been in a situation where we’ve said, “Hey, I’m not going to argue with you anymore.” The hope is this might diffuse the situation and enable clearer heads to prevail when things have calmed down. —continued on page 26

Meetings are open to the public. The Meeting on August 12th will be featuring the topic of the Mandatory Vaccines. On June 30, 2015, Governor Brown signed SB 277 the most stringent vaccine mandate in the United States into law. Families that do not comply with the one-sizefits-all vaccine mandate, will lose their State Constitutional right for a free and appropriate education in public and private K-12 schools. The use of licensed daycare facilities, in-home daycare, public or private preschools and even after school care programs are also included in SB 277. School aged children, not up-to-date on every mandated vaccine, will be required to home school without options for classroom learning. SB 277 eliminates a parent’s right to exempt their children from one, some, or all vaccines, a risk-laden medical procedure including death. In 2016, California parents will be forced to give their children more than 40 doses of 10 federally recommended vaccines. This open-ended vaccine mandate allows the State of California to add any additional vaccines they deem necessary at anytime. Come hear about the latest vaccine laws already in effect, what bills are being proposed, what bils are being enacted and how this will affect you and your family. Referendum Petition is requesting ‘the people’ have a right to vote on having vaccine mandates. Spirituality in Action – the Wave of the Present! Radical Grace, a Stirring Documentary About Nuns vs. the Vatican By Beth Green
F
or many of us, the image of nuns is either nasty, repressed women in habits beating the hands of innocent children or demure sisters, quiet and obedient, in quiet Medieval contemplation. The film Radical Grace, documents the story of three sisters who are neither repressed nor demure. The story confronts us with the question of what we believe and what we are willing to fight for. And, beyond that, it raises the issue of the very purpose of spirituality.
In 2008, under Pope Benedict, the Vatican initiated an investigation of American nuns and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), their umbrella organization. Despite opposition to the Vatican maneuver, the officials charged with the investigation published a 2012 report accusing the American sisters were straying too far from doctrine, representing radical feminist themes and focusing too much on social justice issues, such as caring for the poor and advocating for immigrants and healthcare reform. Three bishops were appointed to reform the LCWR. In 2015, that investigation was halted. In fact, Pope Francis met with representatives of the American nuns and thanked them for their work. Was this an internal blip of the Catholic Church or a tectonic shift in the way spirituality is expressing itself on this planet? I believe it’s the latter. There is a one-time only opportunity in San Diego to see Radical Grace, a tremendously powerful documentary about the inquisition of the American nuns and the response of women and their supporters. The film features three women, their personal pain and their pushback. Although not yet publicly released, you can see it on Wednesday, August 12 at 7 pm. 8 | The Life Connection

This special screening is being sponsored by InsideOut: The Inner Revolution, a radio show on VoiceAmerica.com, Variety channel that I host. Not surprisingly, the event has caught fire, with an evergrowing list of co-sponsors and “friends” supporting it, starting with TheInnerRevolution.org, the Unity Center of San Diego, which has offered the use of its magnificent sanctuary, and the San Diego Women’s Drum Circle, who will be drumming up enthusiasm from 6:30-7 pm in the Unity Center courtyard. As host of InsideOut: The Inner Revolution, I will be giving a brief introductory talk, and Helen Hillix, Director of TheInnerRevolution.org, will be leading a discussion where people can share their feelings directly after the film. Directed by Rebecca Parrish, with Susan Sarandon as executive producer, the impact of Radical Grace is visceral. As the critic from RogerEbert.com said in his review, Radical Grace moved me to tears with its portrayal of good people putting their beliefs into action in ways that transcend all ideological boundaries.” We too were moved to tears as we watched these older women of faith, who are confronted with the possibility of losing their standing in the Church, their communities and everything they have worked for. And we are moved by the themes of love and caring emanating from them, as we see them keep up the fight. We inevitably look at ourselves and ask ourselves: What we are willing to risk and for what? But beyond all that, the film makes another statement: that spirituality and activism are ONE. These deeply religious women are continually asking divine guidance, not to wend their way through a difficult and challenging life, but to support
their activism. Is this our spirituality, as well? Is our spirituality just an inner experience that gives us the feeling of peace and separates us from the dreary world? Or is our spirituality the call to action on behalf of God, higher consciousness or the spirit of service, not to escape from the world, but to change it? This is a choice about the purpose of spirituality itself. From my perspective, spirituality is not about what we think we believe. It is about what we feel in our hearts and what motivates our actions. It doesn’t matter how pious we sound, when our thoughts, feelings and actions are hateful or selfish. It doesn’t matter how much we proclaim we are One, when we still act from separation consciousness: dog-eat-dog, competition, getting ahead, taking care of number one, or taking care of our family, race, religion or geographic area. Spirituality is being truly inspired by the Oneness itself, being moved by the sense of connection with all people, all species and all that is. It is being motivated to heal ourselves and one another so that we may find a way to trust and open ourselves to new learning and new ways of being. Because the damage done to every human being through our upbringing, socialization and life events can be overwhelming and sabotage our most cherished beliefs in Oneness. Because we cannot be truly in Oneness consciousness when we are anxious, defensive and afraid of being dominated; when we are trapped in nonsensical, life-destroying traditions that squelch our creativity and even our ability to think; when we are trained to be prejudiced or just self-protective; and when we promote and repeat ideas and beliefs that we ceased to believe long ago, but hang onto in our heads just for the purpose of belonging to the tribe. We believe Radical Grace represents the Inner Revolution sweeping the Catholic Church and our world. And nothing but an Inner Revolution will free us to rethink everything – from the way we dress, to the way we treat our mates, to the way we organize the production and distribution of all goods. And that Inner Revolution, that confrontation of the tyranny of what we already know, percolates into everything we do as individuals and as a world. When we are willing to have that Inner Revolution within us, and when we are willing to speak that Inner Revolution to the world, we become truly spiritual, which is spirituality in action. We can no longer pretend that spirituality is just an inner experience. Pope Francis himself is a symbol of that awareness. We cannot focus on doctrine. We cannot focus on differences. We cannot focus on protecting the hierarchy and our place in it. We need to remember that spirituality is the call to care, to connect and to confront. Inner Revolutionaries are different from many revolutionaries of the past. Inner Revolutionaries do not confront “them.” They confront themselves and us. They don’t just regurgitate anger about the workers vs. the bosses, whites vs. blacks, women vs. men. They help lead humanity in a deep process of self-

But consider the following:
Fire Walking
walking. A recent Guinness World Record for longest fire walk was set by 23-year-old Canadian Amanda Dennison in June 2005. Amanda walked 220 feet over coals that measured 1,600 to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. Amanda didn’t jump or fly, which means her feet were in direct contact with the glowing coals for the full 30 seconds it took her to complete the walk. Many people attribute the ability to remain burn-free during such a walk to paranormal phenomena. In contrast, physicists suggest that the presumed danger is an illusion, claiming the embers are not great conductors of heat and that the walker’s feet have limited contact with the coals. Yet, very few scoffers have actually removed their shoes and socks and traversed the glowing coals, and none have matched the feat of Amanda’s feet. Besides, if the coals are really as benign as the physicists suggest, how do they account for severe burns experienced by large numbers of “accidental tourists” on their firewalks? Our friend, author and psychologist Dr. Lee Pulos, has invested considerable time studying the fire-walking phenomenon. One day, he bravely faced the fire himself. With his pants rolled up and his mind clear, Lee walked the gauntlet of burning embers. Upon reaching the other side, he was delighted and empowered to realize that his feet showed no sign of trauma. He was also totally surprised to discover upon unrolling his pants, his cuffs detached along a scorch mark that encircled each leg. Whether or not the mechanisms that allow fire walking are physical or metaphysical, one outcome is consistent: those who expect the coals to burn them, get burned, and those who don’t, don’t. The belief of the walker is the most important determinant. Those who successfully complete the firewalk experience, firsthand, a key principle of quantum physics: the observer, in this case, the walker, creates the reality. Meanwhile, on the extreme opposite of the climate spectrum, the Bakhtiari tribe of Persia walk barefoot for days in snow and ice over a 15,000-foot mountain pass. In the 1920s, explorers Ernest Schoedsack and Merian Cooper created the first feature length documentary, a brilliant award-winning movie titled Grass: A Nation’s Battle for Life. This historic film captured the annual migration of the Bakhtiari, a race of nomads who had no prior contact with the modern world. Twice a year, as they have done for a millennium, more than 50,000 people and a herd of half a million sheep, cows, and goats cross rivers and glacier-covered mountains to reach green pastures. To get their traveling city over the mountain pass, these hardy, barefooted people dig a roadway, through the towering ice and snow that blankets the 14,000 foot high peak of Zard-Kuh (Yellow Mountain). Good thing these people didn’t know they could catch a death of cold by being shoeless in the snow for days! The point is, whether the challenge is cold feet or “coaled feet,” we humans are really not as frail as we think we are.
Heavy Lifting
“
The point is, whether the challenge is cold feet or ‘coaled feet,’ we humans are really not as frail as we think we are.” and women pump iron. Such efforts require intense bodybuilding and, perhaps, some steroids on the side. In one form of the sport called total weightlifting, burly male world record holders lift in the range of 700 to 800 pounds and female titlists average around 450 to 500 pounds. While these accomplishments are phenomenal, many other reports exist of untrained, unathletic people showing even more amazing feats of strength. To save her trapped son, Angela Cavallo lifted a 1964 Chevrolet and held it up for five minutes while neighbors arrived, reset a jack, and rescued her unconscious boy. Similarly, a construction worker lifted a 3,000-pound helicopter that had crashed into a drainage ditch, trapping his buddy under water. In this feat captured on video, the man held the aircraft aloft while others pulled his friend from beneath the wreckage. To dismiss these feats as the consequence of an adrenaline rush misses the point. Adrenaline or not, how can an untrained average man or woman lift and hold a half ton or more for an extended duration? These stories are remarkable because neither Ms. Cavallo nor the construction worker could have performed such acts of superhuman strength under normal circumstances. The idea of lifting a car or helicopter is unimaginable. But with the life of their child or friend hanging in the balance, these people unconsciously suspended their limiting beliefs and focused their intention on the foremost belief at that moment: I must save this life! —continued on page 22

Perspectives on San Diego County Water By Steve Hays, TLC publisher
I
n July the San Diego North Economic Development Council explored water issues and solutions at the North County Water Summit. Water districts as well as businesses and interested individuals, including myself, attended. It looked to me like there were over 300 people there. There were two panels, each with four speakers, who covered a wide range of issues. The Council’s website, sdnedc.org, has a good recap of it with all the details and who was involved. For space reasons, I won’t get into all of the sponsors or speakers, but do want to acknowledge the SDNED Council of putting together a very informative event. What’s here are some of the highlights or takeaways that were valuable for me and I think provide a good perspective of California’s drought and how San Diego is doing—what we have done and how do we stand? I was left with some questions, but overall it seems that San Diego is not really in bad shape when compared to a lot of the State. Here is some of what was discussed. There are areas of the State, even cities that simply don’t have water. They have it shipped in. When you don’t have enough water to begin with and a statewide mandatory 30% cutback is declared, the pressure is on. In most of the State cutting back is a challenge. The area served by the San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA) is actually in great shape. We have 99% of the water we need. Because we have it that doesn’t mean we can use it, however. The 30% we cut back is put into local reservoirs, according to one of the speakers, Maureen Stapleton, general manager of the SDCWA. In San Diego we have what she called a “regulatory drought.” It wasn’t always like this. In 1991 San Diego was told to cut back on its water by 50%! Then we didn’t have any extra water. We’ve changed how we get our water and because of that ad now we are not experiencing the critical, tough choices and challenges other areas are having to make. Ultimately what saved San Diego is that California had an unusually high volume of rain in 1993 and then again in mid-nineties. But it was tough in 1991 and 1992. At that time San Diego was getting 95% of its water from the state water project, the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) 12 | The Life Connection
D August 2015
and providing 5% of it’s own water. Today MWD provides 49% and that will go down to 30% in 2020. Local supplies now provide 17% of San Diego County’s water. We diversified.
Less Per Capita, Too
Equally significant is that per capita water use has declined 31% since 1990. The State legislature set a target for per capita water use that San Diego met in 2014. Comparing 1990 with 2014, we have 800,000 more people in the county now and use less total water than we did in 1990. We use 20% less!
The Condition
San Diego has accomplished a lot and needed to. What was also reviewed at the Water Summit was just how much of a desert we are. San Diego County has very little groundwater. The available groundwater basin storage space is 19,000 acre-feet (AF). Orange County has 135,000 AF. LA County has 450,000 AF. The San Fernando Valley has over 500,000 AF and even the Inland Empire has 439,000 AF. Groundwater wise, we are the desert! Groundwater is very significant in other parts of the State because it now supplies the State with 60% of the water it uses. Of the “available” water, agriculture uses 80%.
Agricultural Usage
“Available” refers to the 50% of the water we have that we can use. The other 50% of the water captured by the state’s infrastructure is diverted for environmental causes. Groundwater provides us with an emergency source of water. Statewide, groundwater basins are being depleted and will most likely have to be addressed by the state.
The San Diego County Water Authority is open to future and emerging leaders in the San Diego region for the fall 2015 Citizens Water Academy class. The class is for those with the desire to learn about critical water issues for the region. The selection process is competitive and acceptance is not guaranteed. More than 130 graduates have completed the program since the fall of 2014. Sessions are held in late September and October in Mission Valley, La Jolla and Escondido. Apply by September 4. See waterAcademy@SDCWA.org.
As long as we maintain groundwater basins they keep us from having to building more reservoirs. They naturally hold water for us. The important perspective for San Diegans to remember is that farming here uses closer to 20% of our water, much lower than the state average of 60% of available water. From 2007 to 2013 water used for agriculture decreased in the country by more than 50%. At the same time, among all counties in the nation, San Diego has the 19th largest farm economy. It’s number one in nursery production, avocados, small farms and organic farms.
The Costs of Water
When deciding what to do, one of the big considerations, of course, is cost. It was interesting to discover that there are some choices that are clearly more cost efficient for us than others. Water from a desalination plant costs about twice as much as the water we get from the Metropolitan water District and the Colorado River. It’s almost $2000 per Acre Foot (AF) compared to $1000/AF. The cost to recycle wastewater, bring it up to drinking water standards and then mixing it into existing reservoirs also costs about $1000/AF. Desalination plants are the most expensive way to go— as well as the most environmentally controversial. With the help of the local media there was a time when recycling wastewater was the most controversial. Instead of calling it NASA-approved water or moon water or something like that, most of the local media couldn’t stop themselves from giggling at their toilet to tap comments. The world is changed! Right now, space-travel quality water looks like one of our best choices because of the price and because it doesn’t have to be imported. It’s predictable. Pure Water San Diego is the city’s program to ultimately provide one third of San Diego’s drinking water supply. See Sandiego.gov/purewater. Recycled water now provides about 4% of our total water needs. Yes, it’s considered an untapped resource.
Why Don’t They Do X, Y and Z?
One of the reasons I thought it important to get into all of this is because of the many conversations that I hear that begin with, “why don’t they …?” Or, “the solution is obvious, all they need to do is …” The monthly water series that I began writing in the May issue has stimulated me to do a lot of research. Most of the conversations I hear similar to the ones I just mentioned refer to projects that either exist or are soon to exist.
At the same time I have my own favorite XYZ’s that I’d like to see done, but given the conventional wisdom and approaches, and given that we have many different geographies that water districts operate in, you have to say that in San Diego they have at least gone from A to W. With a few exceptions that water districts don’t normally deal with, you can probably say that if we can think of it, they’ve probably already studied it or they are doing it and we don’t know about it. There’s a lot to know about California and San Diego water, and I’m definitely still a learner. My purpose is not to critique them, but obviously some water districts have done better than others and there is a lot to do and catch up on. Using purple pipe or recycled gray water for irrigation, for instance, is just getting started in some areas and much better established in others. I don’t think there’s any particular area where we can say that we can’t do more than we are doing. We are on the road however.
What are we/they doing?
Some of the things that farmers have been doing are planting crops and trees closer together. One of the biggest difference makers has been using drip water systems and water sensors. We often hear, “why don’t we line the canals that brings us Colorado River water?” Lining the Coachella Canal was completed in 2006 and the All American Canal in 2009. Desalination? Like it or not, the largest ocean plant in the nation comes online in early 2016. There are rebates for water efficient toilets, clothes washers and rainwater collection systems. Laws have been passed setting landscape irrigation standards, on and on. My purpose is not really to list everything, but to give a sampling and to express my opinion that I think they are doing a lot, and have done a lot to move us away from where we were in 1990. —continued on page 27 www.LifeConnectionMagazine.com

Enchanted Garden Mobile Sets Out to Win Back Our Sacred Seeds by Leslie Goldman
I
am setting out in August in my ’68 VW Van on a Mission, “The Enchanted Garden Mobile’s Journey to Win Back Our Sacred Seeds.” Winning Back Sacred Seeds Starter Kit seed packets of ancient wheat will be a gift given along the route. Follow The Journey to the National Heirloom Expo, September 8–10, 2015 on instagram, facebook, and the Plant Your Dream Blog. See “Winning Back Our Sacred Seeds with Leslie Goldman National Heirloom Expo” online for links in the July issue of TLC.
With DARK Clouds emanating from Washington DC and hovering over California and the nation, the Enchanted Garden Mobile’s journey aims to inspire a “Climate Shift.” Traveling from San Diego to Santa Rosa and beyond, this is a spiritual pilgrimage to bring Light where there is Dark. We will be looking to inspire Rare Seeds along the way. You are the Full Harvest this Earth has been waiting for, so Plant Your Dream! B a k e r C r e e k H e i r l o o m S e e d C o m p a n y, c r e ated 5000 “Winning Back Sacred Seeds Starter Kit Seed Packets filled with Kamut International ancient wheat for the journey. They use the hashtag @RareSeeds to describe their Heirloom Seed Collection. I use this term #RareSeeds metaphorically to apply to humans who are living their soul purpose. I consider “Rare Seeds” and Heirloom seeds to be “Sacred Seeds.” The National Heirloom Expo is a major gathering of the Pure Food Revolution. For three days we experience what it will feel like to wake up in a Post GMO world of friendship and sustainable relationships with all living things. You are invited to attend, and help spread the word about this amazing event. Go to @Heirloomexpo, theheirloomexpo.com. I am one of 100 speakers. 16 | The Life Connection

THE “LIGHT ACT” IS NEEDED NOW
Attention of many Non-GMO, Organic and Fair Trade Activists in July turned to Washington where House Resolution 1599 was approved. “Known as the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act to supporters and the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act by critics” the Bill aimed to outlaw states rights to Label Genetically Engineered Foods, and do much, much more. The Bill, now passed by the House, must have a version that goes before the Senate and then to the President. Regardless of what a handful of elected officials do, I see our task continuing to grow a grassroots movement that harvests our Rare Seed Nature. I call doing this a Light Act. I see continued consumer rejection of GMO foods no matter what laws are passed. We need to support the companies that honor Non-GMO, Organic & Fair Trade.
JOURNEY SPONSORS
This Journey to the National Heirloom Expo is sponsored by Dr. Brunner’s, Frey Organic Winery, Patricia Bragg, and more companies featured on my Plant Your Dream Blog. Please visit and support the dreams of “Rare Seeds Among Us Plant Your Dream Blog.” The journey will take us to farmers markets and places where many of the products we recommend to outgrow GMOs are found, including Whole Foods Markets. Nobel Peace Prize winner Romain Rolland once said, “There is no lack in the wide universe of souls that will form the new ground.” The EG Mobile is our Vehicle to meet these Rare Seeds and plant the Enchanted Garden, a name for our renewed earth that grows one seed and one dream at a time.

War In Heaven by Keith Denny
Things are going wrong in Heaven--big things--and while the End of Time gets closer and closer, a young Angel is forced to leave the sidelines and get in the game, hoping it’s not already too late. Great entertainment and thought provoking. “Souls are built strong and get even stronger, yet that doesn’t mean they can’t be disassembled. A few times some of the bad light DNA did express itself in new souls and that screwed up just about everything. Unlimited Possibilities – Imagine By Roger Cavnaugh, PhD
S
ome years ago I took a group out for a day of exploring a sacred mountain. As we climbed we came upon a rock face shaped like a pterodactyl’s head. Seemingly incised within the rock was a beautifully formed serpent’s head. For everyone who shared the experience of gazing at or touching that particular rock there was a deep felt sense that it was the serpent imagining flight that inspired the evolution of the winged pterosaurs. Whether literally true or not, the experience that day suggested to all of us the crucial power that imagination plays in evolution. Such a view of evolution clashes fundamentally with the ‘hard science’ of this very materialistic age, which always looks for external causes, dismisses purpose in favor of random events, and gives no credence to imagination as an essential creative force that impels us forward. That is changing. It may be that imagination ultimately takes its creative power from the timeless infinite realm of the Eternal Present in which all possibilities exist. In the recent film Interstellar the future, a fifth dimensional reality populated by more evolved humans, reaches out to the past to communicate the essential information that points to the next step for humanity as we move beyond the limitations of the earth that we know as home. We can think of this step of going beyond our conventional understandings as a planetary initiation. This collective expansion of our awareness asks of us that we leave our identification with the body and all its attachments behind in favor of a sense of ourselves as multidimensional beings. From the perspective of ourselves as Consciousness existing simultaneously in any number of dimensions we can conceive of, our future is calling us forward, sparking our imagination of what might be possible. So let’s imagine a way of life that is more consistent with our values, a way of life that satisfies our deeper desires for Love, and that moves toward our fondest hopes while honoring the individual gifts that give direction and meaning to out lives. What is your excellence and how do you offer it to the world? Is there a place for that excellence and for your gifts in the world as we find it? Far too few of us would enthusiastically answer ‘Yes!” Many of us have experienced the cost of adapting to or not really fitting into the limited possibilities of an economy of competition and struggle, and a social order of materialism and mass consumption. We are aware of the interdependence of all life and seek to live in harmony with Nature and each other. We have strong aspirations for peace and justice that do not seem realizable given the way the world functions. Each of us has dreamed of other possibilities, and most of us have been involved for some time in efforts to live more consciously and so create a more fulfilling way of life for ourselves and for our planet. 20 | The Life Connection

Imagine a community of those aware of their true nature as Love. Where each person brings that which is most excellent about them; a community where that excellence is not only recognized but welcomed and honored. Such a community would be focused by a fundamental commitment to support the value of every person as a divine being whose presence brings greater possibilities to the whole. Imagine each person in that community dedicated to their own truth and aware of the sacred in all of life. Unique talents of each person would be complemented by some other creative expression that brings added depth both to the individual and the community. Imagine a matrix for transformation where multidimensional realities would be explored and invited into the realm of ordinary life, a community where higher consciousness would be the foundation of all that is created. That community would be a living mystery school where dogma would yield to open and fresh expressions of our impulses to know and live the Divine. Spirituality would mean an acknowledgement of our potential and the freedom to explore what we can become. Received knowledge would not be recirculated as education. Instead, education would be rooted in our lived experience and draw from the entirety of our being rather than be limited to a mental calculus. Education would become a life long individual and collective process of discovering and creating from our inner truth, a process that answers the call of life to know itself in new ways. Imagine living consciously with others to shift the terms with which we come to this planet toward an ethic and practice of cooperation, dialogue, inclusiveness, and mutual support. Imagine violence is recognized as obsolete and counterproductive for one and all, where reverence for life is embedded in all interactions, and conflict resolution is based on acknowledging the needs and dignity of each party. Imagine politics that understands that freedom is the essence of our humanity and sees no need of coercion and manipulation; a politics that is vigilant in the support of free expression and invites universal participation in an ongoing dialogue of how to best live out our most sacred beliefs and universal values. Imagine an economy that brings resources to bear where they are most needed, and sees no need to deprive others or exploit the natural world in order to prosper. Imagine an economics where giving and receiving are balanced for each person and household because there is a pervasive commitment to the well being of all and a harmonious, respectful relationship with nature. Such an economy would be human scale with no giant entities out of touch with the real needs of people. It would return power to the community, be based on local talents and resources, and understand that real wealth and
success are not derived from possessing more and more material things but rather emerge out of the extent to which there is an individual and collective project to see and experience the divine in all beings, all relationships, and all creation. Imagine a way of life in which this commitment to sacredness shapes all aspects of culture and creates new ways of being human and living in our home, this earth; and this sense of the sacred is an ever original, spontaneous and free expression of exploring and making real how the unlimited possibilities of our divine nature can be the essence of the process of living. Even now while the old certainties are rapidly crumbling away, many highly creative people and self realized teachers are appearing, and we ourselves are becoming more aware of an inner knowing that takes us toward our ideals. Now is the time for those of us who share this dream to clarify and strengthen our commitment to living our truth, and understand that we can best live that truth through mutual support and conscious interdependence. In future columns we will explore more of this and look at what might be done and is being done locally to create what we can imagine as the next steps in realizing an advanced urban culture and community. Drinking Poison
Every day we bathe our bodies with antibacterial soaps and scrub our homes with potent antibiotic cleansers. Thus, we protect ourselves from ever-present deadly germs in our environment. To remind us how susceptible we are to invasive organisms, television ads exhort that we cleanse our world with Lysol and rinse our mouths with Listerine . . . or is it the other way around? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention along with the media continuously inform us of the impending dangers of the latest flu, HIV, and plagues transported by mosquitoes, birds, and swine. Why do these prognostications worry us? Because we have been programmed to believe our body’s defenses are weak, ripe for invasion by foreign substances. If Nature’s threats weren’t bad enough, we must also protect ourselves from byproducts of human civilization. Manufactured poisons and massive amounts of excreted pharmaceuticals are toxifying the environment. Of course poisons, toxins and germs can kill us—we all know that. But then there are those who don’t believe in this reality—and live to tell about it. In an article integrating genetics and epidemiology in Science magazine, microbiologist V.J. DiRita wrote, “Modern epidemiology is rooted in the work of John Snow, an English physician whose careful study of cholera victims led him to discover the waterborne
nature of this disease. Cholera also played a part in the foundation of modern bacteriology—40 years after Snow’s seminal discovery, Robert Koch developed the germ theory of disease following his identification of the comma-shaped bacterium Vibrio cholerae as the agent that causes cholera. Koch’s theory was not without its detractors, one of whom was so convinced that V. cholerae was not the cause of cholera that he drank a glass of it to prove that it was harmless. For unexplained reasons he remained symptom-free, but nevertheless incorrect.” Here’s a man who, in 1884, so challenged the accepted medical opinion that, to prove his point, he drank a glass of cholera, yet remained symptom-free. Not to be outdone, the professionals claimed he was the one who was wrong! We love this story because the most telling part is that science dismissed this man’s daring experiment without bothering to investigate the reason for his apparent immunity, which was very likely his unshakable belief that he was right. It was far easier for the scientists to treat him as an irksome exception than to change the rules they created. In science however, an exception simply represents something that is not yet known or understood. In fact, some of the most important advances in the history of science were directly derived from studies on anomalous exceptions. Now take the insight from the cholera story and integrate it with this amazing report: Rural eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, and parts of —next page

Virginia and North Carolina are home to devout fundamentalists known as the Free Pentecostal Holiness Church. In a state of religious ecstasy, congregants demonstrate God’s protection through their ability to safely handle poisonous rattlesnakes and copperheads. Even though many of these individuals get bitten, they do not show expected symptoms of toxic poisoning. The snake routine is only the opening act. Really devout congregants take the notion of Divine protection one giant step further. In testifying that God protects them, they drink toxic doses of strychnine without exhibiting harmful effects. Now, there’s a tough mystery for science to stomach!

Rev. Dr. Roxie Hart
Every day, thousands of patients are told, “All the tests are back and the scans concur . . . I am sorry; there is nothing else we can do. It is time for you to go home and get your affairs in order because the end is near.” For most patients with terminal diseases, such as cancer, this is how their final act plays out. However, there are those with terminal illnesses who express a more unusual and happier optionspontaneous remission. One day they are terminally ill, the next day they are not. Unable to explain this puzzling yet recurrent reality, conventional doctors in such cases prefer to conclude that their diagnoses were simply incorrect-in spite of what the tests and scans revealed. According to Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona, author of Coyote Medicine, spontaneous remission is often
accompanied by a “change of story.” Many empower themselves with the intention that they-against all odds-are able to choose a different fate. Others simply let go of their old way of life with its inherent stresses, figuring they may as well relax and enjoy what time they have left. Somewhere in the act of fully living out their lives, their unattended diseases vanish. This is the ultimate example of the power of the placebo effect, where taking a sugar pill is not even needed! Now here’s an utterly crazy idea. Instead of investing all of our money into the search for elusive cancerprevention genes and what are perceived to be magic bullets that cure without the downside of harmful side effects, wouldn’t it make sense to also dedicate serious energy to research the phenomenon of spontaneous remission and other dramatic, non-invasive medical reversals associated with the placebo effect? But because pharmaceutical companies haven’t come up with a way to package or affix a price tag to placebo-mediated healing, they have no motivation to study this innate healing mechanism. If you are black in this county you have experienced prejudice, but sometimes a policeman may not be the best person to hear your complaints about it. No doubt that’s difficult. I’ve seen it. When I listen to proposals of how to reform police departments and get everything on video, etc., I hope we don’t forget how our minds can sometimes operate. Don’t we all lose it sometimes? I also hope that we remember what an animal does when it’s trapped in a corner. Or, what we all do if our family is attacked. It’s okay for me to say things about my family, but not you! Right? We close ranks against the outsider don’t we? What if we made it clear to the police that change needs to happen and either they can do it or it can be forced upon them? Certainly the police know those among them who have a short fuse—a hair trigger—and need to be reined in or weeded out. Don’t they know what needs to be corrected? We either have to accept the idea that one side or the other is totally evil, or there are good people in tough, stressful circumstances reacting poorly—maybe all around us. Certainly there have to be a lot of policemen who are good people that don’t like to see unnecessary force being used. Now is a good time for them to step up. As many of us say, to work, change must ultimately come from within.
Amelia’s Note There are so many amazing things happening in San Diego over the summer. From festivals, beach parties, Del Mar Races, to the priceless sunsets during warm weather. Last month when the issue came out, I was in Europe. It is always a fascinating experience to go overseas. Traveling is a huge passion of mine. I must admit that it was disappointing to see a non-gloss cover upon my return. My purpose with TLC is to help grow the distribution, awareness, and demographics. Wearing all hats of a business is not only eyeopening, but self-evolving. Had no clue what I was jumping into, however certainly glad that I did. Would love to be able to turn this magazine into something bigger. Along the way, you have to always practice gratitude for the present moment. Reach out to me with any suggestions. I know San Diego can support a conscious magazine after 30 years. Let’s make it happen! Life is all about balance. I have been focusing so much energy on working, learning, and attempting to expand a magazine that I have neglected being “social.” It has been great making meaningful new
By Amelia Leigh, M.S. friendships while maintaining time for a Ph.D. program too. I am looking forward to the new research I will be starting. Consciousness and the human potential intrigue me. A lot of attention has been brought to the vaccine debate, GMO labeling, the lion Cecil, and countless other reasons to debate. It is fantastic that society has realized the power they have when coming together. It all starts within. Where are you putting your voice, energy, passion? Be part of the solution, not problem. Understand that we make a personal decision to interact with society. Be kind.
Water from page 13
Yes they had to, to bring us where we are today, but a lot of water districts did not—and the state still faces a lot of challenges. It’s not a time to relax and rest. There’s a lot of information available about what has been done at watersmartSD.org.
Still to be Decided — Fracking
There were issues that were not discussed at the Water Summit that will need to be looked at on federal or state levels. Fracking is one. Hollin Kretzmann, of the Center for Biological Diversity, is challenging the legal injection of fracking wastewater into protected sources of water. “It uses a tremendous amount of fresh water that once used for fracking cannot be used for anything else. It all ends up in underground disposal wells after and becomes mixed with chemicals—it becomes contaminated and taken out of the water cycle.” The Center for Biological Diversity is also attempting to block a federal plan to open up more than 1,000,000 acres of public land and mineral rights in central California to fracking. To help prevent fracking wastewater from being put into the states protected aquifers go to earthjustice.org and sign their petition. California’s division of oil, gas and geothermal resources (D0GGR) recently admitted that the gas and oil industry is been illegally dumping wastewater into protected aquifers
from over 2500 injection wells. Aquifers provide water for agriculture.
Bottled Water
Filling plastic water containers with water from California Water Districts is also something that is not being addressed. The total volume of water is not that great, but why it is allowed during a severe drought goes to the heart of the one of the big challenges when it comes to controlling water. Water districts deal with water usage and not the politics of how it should be used. It’s the good news, bad news. They don’t decide or look at whether or not a farmer should be growing water intensive crops such as almonds or rice. They don’t decide what we should eat. It takes political and consumer pressure to change our fracking and eating habits. Although that—how to bring about effective change—is one of the many topics covered at the water Summit we don’t have room for here. Look for that in a future issue.
What if?
Next month we will continue our water series and look not only at rainwater collection we can each do, but how that could affect the region, water usage and homes. Many think of it as quaint, but could it make a bigger difference than we think? www.LifeConnectionMagazine.com
