Greetings

from the publisher Yes, It’s Been 30 Years!

The most important thing I want to say this month to those of you who read The Life Connection (TLC) is Thank You! Thank you for reading it, telling others about it, advertising in it and for telling those who advertise that you saw them in TLC. We appreciate them being our partners in publishing TLC and offering more methods, products, perspectives and win–win ideas that support all of as we adjust to life and world changes. My thank you extends, of course to the many people that contribute by writing. To Brian Carrell for all his tech support through the years. Thanks to the team that produces TLC each month—Amelia Leigh and Kate Griffin, and more recently Ronit Gabay and Jessica Luibrand. Thanks to Tim Brittain, who has helped produce TLC for many of those 30 years. Mentioning everyone would take up many pages. I can’t possibly thank all those who have contributed over the years so I’m mentioning those who contribute now. Actually we acknowledge people each month—currently just to the right of this column. I started publishing TLC in late 1985, so we—I’ve had a lot of help—have been coming out for 30 years now. Please feel appreciated. I’d never before had a job that included people coming up to me and thanking me for what I do. Thanks to everyone who has made that possible—and who believes that life doesn’t have to be as dire as we hear in the media each day. There are ways to adjust, adapt and hope. That’s what human beings do. Thank you for enabling me to do what I love doing, without having a lot of people telling me what to do. Suggesting yes, telling me, no. I’ve been able to explore the topics I 4 | The Life Connection

am interested in or want to know more about and then I get to share that with you—the readers of TLC. As many of you know this began as The Light Connection then changed a full six years ago to The Life Connection. Anymore I don’t even bother to correct people when they say Light—I hear it all the time. I changed the name because I’d go to events like EarthFair and hear people tell me this was a magazine for psychics. Nothing against psychics, but Life jumped out as a more inclusive word. Being psychic, or intuitive and sensitive, is part of life too—and even part of this issue—but my focus has not been singular in any direction other than living life in the most effective, healthful and satisfying way possible. There are many paths to that. When I saw a calendar with an unattributed quote on it that said, “Our quality of life is about the connections we make,” I realized that was what I was hoping to express and expand through TLC—connections that contribute to the quality of our life. We used to have T-shirts that said, “Enlighten up, read The Light Connection.” We gave up the T-shirts, but still feel if this can’t be fun, why do it? At times it’s been a challenge, but overall happiness isn’t just a destination, it’s a road, a journey, right? If it gets too worrisome, it’s time to look for more joyous participations. I want to know what helps us be healthy and live in harmony with our environments, which means effectively communicating and building relationship skills. That has ultimately led me to looking at what in the world some of us are doing in the world—and how dysfunctional it can be “out there.” —continued on page 22

Current News AIHM Conference - Integrative Medicine

Mimi Guameri gives Jean Watson the Visionary Award

T

his October, nearly 900 healthcare providers from around the world gathered in San Diego for the integrative health and medicine event of the year, AIHM’s People, Planet, Purpose: Global Practitioners United in Health and Healing. The annual conference of the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM) featured 75 internationally renowned speakers. The combination of heart and science created a transformational experience across professions including medical, chiropractic, naturopathic, nursing and acupuncture, all of whom expressed a belief in collaboration as the way to transform health care. Luminary faculty member Jean Watson, RN, PhD, AHNBC, FAAN, said, “All this work is converging in our universe for a new hope for humanity. I was touched by the presence, presentations and the consciousness of all the participants.” AIHM President Mimi Guarneri, MD, emphasized that we are at a tipping point in history, and inspired attendees with a call to action to “shift the conversation from treating diseases to creating a system that supports the health and well-being of our children, communities and planet.” Tabatha Parker, ND, AIHM Education Director, said, “The vision of the conference was to create a gathering place to unite and revitalize healthcare providers. Transcending our silos, we came together in collective purpose toward a new model of health care, with collaboration at the center. Everyone felt the power of our unity and acknowledged that the transformation has begun.” According to AIHM Co-CEO Nancy Sudak, MD, “Those new to the field of integrative health and medicine felt welcomed and inspired, with an immediate sense of community, as did leaders who have worked for decades to manifest change in health care.” Citing the convergence of key factors, including research on lifestyle change interventions, limitations of high-tech medi-

cine and the new reimbursement scaffolding of the Affordable Care Act, Dean Ornish, MD, pointed out that now is the time for a transformation of the system, embodied by the work of AIHM and many others. Conference highlights included: Deepak Chopra, MD, inspired with his presentation, “The Future of Wellbeing.” Dr. Chopra’s keynote was preceded by a “Celebration of Life” for esteemed leader, Mitch Gaynor, MD, and can be seen at aihm.org/deepak-chopra AIHM Fellowship Director, Tieraona Low Dog, MD, launched the first interprofessional fellowship of its kind in the world, resulting in a remarkably high number of applications for the inaugural February 2016 class. Applications are still being accepted at aihm.org/fellowship. More than 75 interprofessional speakers provided countless clinical pearls and connected clinicians to the joy of their practice. The AIHM Awards Ceremony & Gala honored leaders from the movement. Gladys McGarey, MD, MD(H) of The Foundation for Living Medicine was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. San Diego local, Deborah Szekely, known as the Godmother of the Wellness Movement, received the Change Maker Award for her work as a prominent activist, philanthropist and writer. Jean Watson, PhD, RN, of the Watson Caring Science Institute, was awarded the Visionary Award for Caring Science Leadership. All three recipients inspired standing ovations from the crowd. For those who were not able to attend the conference, recordings with more than 80 CMEs/CEUs in Integrative Medicine and Health are available at aihm.org/education. The AIHM’s next Annual Conference will be Oct. 30-Nov. 3, 2016 in San Diego, CA.

Jerusalem Opens at Fleet Science Center

Jerusalem is a new IMAX feature that opened on Nov. 20 at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. It’s the first-ever giant screen film to film above Jerusalem, a sacred city to half of the people on earth. Presented by National Geographic Studios and narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, Jerusalem gives audiences a rare glimpse of the ancient and storied city, with exclusive access to iconic holy sites and little-known aspects of the region, including the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock, the Jordan River, the Sea of Galilee and the mountain fortress of Masada. Filmmakers were granted special permission to film in the region’s strict no-fly zone, enabling them to capture the first-ever largeformat aerial images of the Old City and the Holy Land. Over the last 5,000 years Jerusalem has been conquered, destroyed, rebuilt, reinvented and fought over more than any other place in history. Now, for the first-time ever, a new giant screen film takes audiences soaring high above the Holy Land

and plunging deep into the vibrant Old City--to experience the cherished and iconic site. The captivating new film explores the intersection of science, history and religion on a grand scale in this enigmatic city. Through the stories of Jewish, Christian and Muslim families who call Jerusalem home, audiences will discover why this tiny piece of land is sacred to three major religions. They will also join renowned archaeologist, Dr. Jodi Magness, as she travels underground to solve some of this city’s greatest mysteries. Find out why, after thousands of years, Jerusalem and the Holy Land continue to stir the imagination of billions of people. Jerusalem is an original production from Cosmic Picture and Arcane Pictures and distributed by National Geographic Studios. The 43-minute, large-format film was written and directed by Daniel Ferguson. The executive producer was the late Jake Eberts, legendary producer of movies such as Gandhi, Chariots of Fire and Dances with Wolves. The film was produced by Taran Davies, George Duffield and Daniel Ferguson; and large format industry veteran, Reed Smoot, of the American Society of Cinematographers, served as director of photography. Jerusalem is family friendly and has a run time of 45 minutes. For a current film schedule, please visit: http://www. rhfleet.org/shows/jerusalem

The Women of the West Will Save the World

“T

by Ronit Gabay

he women of Western Civilization will save the world,” His Holiness the Dalai Lama has said. His prophecy was certainly demonstrated at the recent Sixth Parliament of World Religions held in Salt Lake City where many women had prominent roles; and organized the first Women’s Assembly the day before the Parliament officially began. Unfortunately The Dalai Lama couldn’t attend the Parliament due to illness, but he blessed the Parliament with his presence on a live-stream screen. More than ten thousand men and women—spiritual leaders, scholars, authors, and political activists —from 50 different spiritual traditions and over 80 different countries shared their wisdom of the different traditions. Programs included 1800 presenters, exhibitors and films. The focus of the Parliament was “Reclaiming the Heart of Humanity: Working Together for a World of Compassion, Peace, Justice and Sustainability.” This theme was certainly felt through the kind act of service by the Sikh community who offered free lunches, the custom of Langar (dining tradition), every day to those attending. They truly demonstrated their faith through action: “We pray to remember God, and we serve to realize God.” The Langar set the tone of the parliament, bringing people together to appreciate the different traditions. One part of the Parliament was women addressing the issues of discrimination and abuse against women. Marianne Williamson, concluded that religion hasn’t been kind to women throughout history, saying: “The passion of free thinking women has never been deeply appreciated by the great religions of the world because the passion of free thinking women raises the passion of free thinking children that grow up to be free thinking adults that are very difficult to manipulate and almost impossible to control.” The struggle for human rights relating to women, race and religious intolerance were addressed throughout the week. Valerie Kaur, a young Sikh speaker spoke about “revolutionary love,” the kind of love that she had experienced after giving birth to her son when she knew she was willing to die for her son. “I can’t live if someone is dying. I can’t stand by if someone is suffering.” We are not living in a safe world, and many of those challenges, such as the terror in Israel-Palestine, and refugees escaping war and Isis are demonstrating it. Karen Armstrong, a well-known scholar and author of many books about world religions, spoke about hate and war in the name of religions. That is the topic of her new book: Field of Blood:

Religion and the History of Violence (Anchor Book, 2014). She said that we live in a time when everything is possible and accessible, but inside, we don’t have true satisfaction. The violence in the world steams from this emptiness. It gives people “something” to be passionate about. I finally realized that we should stop focusing our effort on condemning violence, and we should focus on engaging younger generation in doing humanitarian projects and utilizing their passion and energy in doing something good in the world. “Kill them” (Quran); “Do not spare them” (Torah); and “Cast them into everlasting Fire” (New Testament), was title of a popular panel that looked at religious scriptures that justify violence and addressed the serious problem of terror and fear in the world. “The scriptures are violent simply because it reflects our violent nature as human beings,” said Armstrong. Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb pointed out that spiritual practice is not enough to end violence: we must take action. She asked for all the abused women in the audience to stand up, which surprisingly was about 70% of the women in the room. Then she asked for those who called a hotline phone number to stand up, and only a few did. Rabbi Gottlieb is a peace activist and her book The Trail Guide to the Torah on Non-violence educates people about her systematic approach for peace. Her unique approach for peace in the Middle East is to act for human rights and do what you can about something you really care about. She encourages people to think globally and act locally. I was personally moved by a unique group of Arabs, Druze, Bedouin, and Orthodox Jews from Holy Land settlements that came together to establish the “Abrahamic Reunion.” As a former settlement resident near Jerusalem, I expected to hear arguments about land rights. Instead I was pleasantly surprised to learn about sincere friendships and a commitment to support each other’s life through projects with children and social gatherings with adults. As they spoke about taking on human actions that might seem impossible, I saw the vision of creating one nation called the “Abrahamic Reunion,” reclaiming the heart of Jerusalem. Other important topics covered were climate change, preserving natural habitat, and engaging people in collective efforts to raise awareness toward the value of the earth. There was a morning class I took where world scripture verses were read about taking responsibility to care for the earth, as it takes care of us. The indigenous people communicated —continued on page 19 www.LifeConnectionMagazine.com

Creating an Attitude of

Gratitude

by

Tim

Braun

T

im Braun is a renowned medium recently featured on Bravo’s ‘Housewives’ series brilliantly bridging this world and the Spirit world connecting those who have passed over, with those they left behind. His first book, Life and Death: A Medium’s Message to Help You Overcome Grief and Find Closure (Findhorn Press, Dec. 2015), features a forward from James Van Praagh.

I travel the country speaking and giving private sittings to people who have lost loved ones and pets. Without a doubt I have seen people struggling with the immense losses. I have also seen first hand just how resilient the human spirit truly is when one embraces Gratitude. In the best of times and the worse of times, gratitude is a powerful force. I have witnessed the healing transformative power of gratitude. Yes! Gratitude! Gratitude is what I would call a secret elixir. It is one of the most potent spiritual gifts that we all possess. It literally is a gift from Spirit. It’s the very place from which I get my gift of being a Spiritual Medium. The very place that allows me to connect with friends and loves ones who have crossed over to the other side and connects them with loved ones who are still living. This is where gratitude comes from. Just as I had to work to develop my gift of Spiritual Mediumship so can you develop the gift of truly expressing and being grateful. First let’s look at what gratitude is and then look at how to create more gratitude in all situations. How do you strengthen your ability to express and stand in place of daily gratitude? Give thanks for the things that come to you when receiving those dreams—when you see a hawk come to you, say thank you. When that butterfly comes to you, say thank you. When you say thank you, you’re strengthening your connection with spirit. When you have that connection with spirit nothing can break that connection. It comes from being thankful for the work that spirit does! Spirit is creating life and continuing life! This is what we are really thanking Spirit for when we thank Spirit. Gratitude is a transformative power. Yes, gratitude is transformative! Remember a moment ago I called it the Secret Elixir. Because it can change you! Being grateful. Expressing gratitude. Taking the time to say 8 | The Life Connection

D December 2015

thank you to Spirit will change how you feel and think. And when your thoughts change you will see things differently! It will change the way you see that pesky co-worker or the mother-in-law that you can’t communicate with. It will even change how you see the successes in your life. Whether it’s a better job, a better relationship, dealing with the loss of a loved one or just a deep-seated emotional and spiritual healing that you are seeking—it will transform you. Gratitude is a feeling of appreciation or thankfulness is what Webster’s says. But let’s go even deeper. I define gratitude as a heartfelt appreciation and/or thankfulness that comes from a respect for Spirit knowing that all things that Spirit creates have value. And Spirit creates everything. So gratitude for all is really what I’m talking about here. That might be difficult, but see sometimes, but no matter how pleasant or uncomfortable a situation is there is always something to learn. Remember that even during what we call the “best times” there is a lesson to learn. And yes, even in the “worst times” there is a lesson to learn. If we know that everything that Spirit creates has value, even the person on the freeway whose car stalled out, the pesky neighbor, or the overbearing boss, yes they all have value. And also when the hawk that flies by you or lands on the tree right outside your window! An attitude of gratitude fosters your ability to see the value in all things.

So you might be thinking, “Ok, great. I’ll stuck it up and be polite. Grin and bare it to my rude neighbor. And hope for the best for them.” We often respond to challenging people and things that are external to ourselves with a passive tolerance. While we are keeping the peace with that challenging person we are not maximizing our potential for learning or for the soul’s true development. We are not tapping into everything that Spirit is trying to communicate to us when we do this. Now don’t get me wrong being polite has it place. What I’m talking about is digging deeper and looking at it with, yes, Gratitude! Here are 10 things that can help one create an Attitude for Gratitude:

10 Tips for Creating The Gratitude Attitude

1. Be Grateful Be grateful. Spirit just is. So decide that you are going to BE grateful in all circumstances. The highs and the lows! Refer to the definition that I mentioned earlier. Decide that you are going to see and seek the value in all things because you know that everything that spirits creates has value. 2. Embrace & Your Wins – Journal the Wins, Tweet the Wins, Facebook the Wins You have a great meeting for work. You have a great conversation with your spouse. Own the wins and express Gratitude for it. Share your gratitude and share your wins. Be mindful and grateful for the wins!

3. Embrace Your Losses – Journal the Losses and Reflect. Failing Forward is an often-used adage but there’s no way to fail forward if you don’t embrace mistakes or failure and express gratitude for it. And if you are having a hard time with this one practice being grateful for what you can learn. Seek Spirit by thanking Spirit for what you can learn even if you have no idea what you can learn. 4. Pay Attention to your Feelings, Focus and Own Them Whether you’re feeling happiness or sadness practice paying attention to your feelings. Thank Spirit for the awareness that your feelings are pointing out. Own those feelings and be grateful for what they are trying to teach you. Ask what are you focused on? This is important. Are you focusing on the positive side, by being grateful and seeking value? Remember everything has value! Or are you denying Spirit by focusing on what you think is negative? 5. Seek greater connection to Spirit In Difficult Times During the most trying times when you are overwhelmed or just at your wits end simply breathe in and Ask for Spirit to lead you and guide you. This can be a 5-minute or longer mediation. The important thing is to seek to be connected to Spirit even when you don’t feel like it. This will steer you back to having an attitude of Gratitude! 6. Bless the Mean, Difficult Person If you are dealing with a mean spirited or difficult person remember that they, like you, are a valuable creation of Spirit. Seek Spirit for them, bless them and ask Spirit to help them see themselves and the effect of their actions better! And be —continued on page 18

Unlimited Possibilities:

What Binds Humankind By: Roger Cavnaugh Ph.D.

T

he cycle of the seasons for 2015 is coming to its completion. In the Fall we harvest not only what has been planted that year in the soil but more significantly what we have seeded and nourished in our lives. We take time to appreciate that our gifts and attainments are not the product of our own efforts alone but draw from a greater reality that supports all life. As our Winter arrives we acknowledge what we usually take for granted, the continuation of Life’s cycles, the hope that’s symbolized by celebrating the Light, and the comfort and warmth of the human essentials; love, fellowship, and family. Each religion has its story of hope, redemption and fulfillment as well as doctrines and rituals that commemorate renewal. In all of this there is a growing recognition that religions are a historically and culturally conditioned set of traditions that despite their long, sad, and very rigid claims to Truth and their divisiveness point to some common values and provide a multitude of valid paths to connect with what’s most need and most fundamental, Love. So if Love is the essence and the goal of religions, why not Love as the religion of humankind? Love is inherently flexible, open and free. Love spontaneously creates rituals and celebration, community, and good will where doctrine, sectarian churches and commandments probably never can nor never will. Love links us with reverence and respect to ourselves, to each other, to the mysterious beyond mind and to all of Creation. Love brings together all that has been separated and is sufficient for all seasons. Love flows with ease when we feel ourselves as one with God and Love flows effortlessly when all is seen as God. Love renews, heals and brings peace; Love is the way like no other. Love gives breadth and depth to all that it touches. Love is the gift that most matters and the gift that continues to give. Love finds the hiding places of fear and despair in the dark corners of the mind and the painful places of the heart without effort. Love battles no one, diminishes no one, and confines no one. Love heals because it orders and sets priorities. Love uplifts and affirms because it responds to the true value of all that it encounters. Love is the face of God indwelling in all of Creation. Love is the mother’s touch nurturing all Life. Love itself is the Gift that brings gifts and blessings. Love opens doors and dissolves boundaries. Love has no peer although 10 | The Life Connection

it seeks no position and claims no right or authority. Love is the Author of our Being, the gift of ourselves, the essence of Life. Love is what we are and are becoming. Love reveals all that stands in the way of its Realization. Love is the way. Love can be a glance, a gesture, a single word, a silence, a benevolent action or an inspiring vision. Love is the depth and breadth of Life, the living Presence of what is Real, True, Good, and Beautiful. Love stills every thought and feeds the flames of desire to attain its highest fulfillment. Love is the way, the path, the goal, the adventure. Love brings all to itself and unifies with no striving, no coercion, no struggle. Love affirms every state and condition as itself and transforms every condition and state into that which fulfills that condition. Love satisfies because it brings to itself all that is needed for its perfection. Love asks nothing for itself and gives everything. Love is the safety and the graciousness of Being resting in Itself. Love creates without fear because Love has no conditions in its desire to know itself. Love pushes no one away because it is no one and no body, understanding that All is in search of reflecting Itself. Love grasps nothing because it is the Source of all and yearns to see itself in whatever arises. Love is timeless, infinite and pervasive because Love is All of it. It is Love that makes a beginning and it is Love that makes for all beginnings to have their completion. All chaos, conflict, misunderstanding, suffering, destruction and death are only painful illusions that serve as stepping stones to greater manifestations of Love. Love is the way. Love is the whole of it, the blood of it, the bones of it, the flesh of it. Love is All of it. Nothing that exists is without Love and nothing can be created or completed without Love. There is no end of it, no beginning of it. It is the Center that is everywhere. It is what you are, what I am, what he is, what she is, for Love has no other. Love meets the vulnerabilities of the fragile human heart and brings peace. Love is the way. May you flourish as Love in this season of change. Managing Emotions During Holidays BY PENELOPE YOUNG ANDRADE, LCSW

Do you know how to manage difficult emotions during the holidays? For many holidays are a mixed bag of cozy times for celebration with friends and family as well as lonely times when loss, grief and anger blow in like a chilling wind. The problem is that since everyone (on TV anyway) seems to be having such a good time, it’s hard not to think there’s something wrong with you for feeling blue. However, no one has escaped loss in this life. It’s normal for painful feelings to arise during seasons when there’s so much focus on togetherness. Learning to comfort yourself during inevitable dark moments can help you open to potential joy in light ones. Here’s the tip. At the first sign of emotional distress, interrupt any judgments by embracing yourself with your own arms. Remind yourself you are okay and it’s okay

to feel sad, mad, scared. Feel the warmth of your hands holding you tight. Next, reach out to the most tenderhearted people you know and ask for support. (Tenderhearted people are typically not judgmental about emotional pain!) If tears arise, rejoice…that means you’re just minutes away from feeling better. If anger appears -- stomp around. Of course you’re mad. What happened to you never should have happened! Set the timer. Watch like a hawk for the warm respite that follows any brief, embodied emotional release. Finally, focus on any easing…body, heart, mind or spirit. You deserve it! Local integrative health practitioner, Dr. Richard Gold, has joined forces with award-winning composer and musician Yuval Ron to release a new CD for the “Doshas.” It also features Om Chanting by Jai Uttal with William Close (America’s Got Talent runner-up) on the Earth Harp. This first-ever prescriptive compilation CD was intentionally designed for the “Doshas” is titled HEALING SOUNDS for Yoga, Mindfulness and Creativity: Aural Journey Through the Doshas of Ayurvedic Medicine. Dr. Gold is a local acupuncturist, teacher and founding Board member of Pacific Oriental College of Medicine. According to Dr. Gold, “Many artists have created music relating to the Chakras. Not for the Doshas. From a traditional medical perspective, the Doshas have much more significance and relevance. Yuval and I strove to go as deeply into the tradition as possible and at the most profound levels to effect human health and consciousness though our musical creation.” The Doshas are best understood to be the three primary forces of nature that each individual embodies and that are responsible for the characteristics of our mind and body. Although each of us manifests all three of the Doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, most people have one or two aspects that predominate. For each Dosha there is a balanced and imbalanced expression, the purpose of this musical production is to help bring balance to each individual’s Doshas. The CDs are available on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. See MettaMindfulnessMusic.com Four CDs by Dr. Richard Gold and Yuval Ron. From Metta Mindfulness Music, Nov. 2015. $49. 240 minutes. ithout a doubt, revenge has been with us as long as people have told stories or recorded history. I wasn’t planning on getting into terrorism, we hear so much about it these days. Seeing the world go down the same path of revenge—and not hearing much about other paths—finally compelled me to say—to shout—this is not the only way to go! What we know is that many feel the need for revenge—for getting even—for the recent, tragic attacks on Paris. If that approach worked, however, why does revenge keep being recycled over and over? What is “getting even”? For those who committed those attacks, don’t we know that they felt that they were the ones getting even? Getting even started long before we dropped a drone on Jihadi John, but couldn’t the Paris attack be a reaction to that? It occurred two days before Paris. Maybe they wanted revenge for our attack. What is “even”? When is it complete? When did it start? Was it the Hatfields or the McCoys? Is it even useful to figure it out or say who is to blame? I know I’m one Stephen that can’t define “even.” How we honor people’s rights in our society is another important issue being debated now. How do we uphold our Constitution and the principles every office holder in the country swears to defend and still protect ourselves? Or did that question just answer itself? Big questions. Right now let’s look at our immediate reactions. When there are people out there attacking us it’s only natural to defend ourselves. We instinctively raise our arms in defense when a blow is coming at us. Then we look for what might come next and how to prevent that from happening. It seems there are people all around the world who don’t, or won’t, control themselves and in a sense, force us to attempt to control them. How far we go in that direction is the focus of much of what is being discussed and written now. What is the best way to control? Don’t we also have to add some perspective? The navy of ISIS is not about to attack the East Coast. Their air force needs to exist before it can attack en masse. People are not coming across the border by the thousands—most of the immigration flow is going in the other direction. What might be more useful is seeing if we can predict what will happen. If it is predictable, can it also be preventable?

What also begs for an achievable approach is how we can control others. Have we ever really accomplished that? For very long? A lot of people have written about revenge and control and the toll it takes on those who attempt to force it as a remedy. Yet that ultimately turns us into what we are fighting and trying to prevent. One fictional story most of us know is about the Incredible Hulk. In the original movie the general keeps going after a man who turns into the powerful Hulk whenever he is pressured and upset. The general never seems to notice that the harder he tries to control and eliminate the Hulk the worse he makes the situation. The more he tries, the more he feeds power to the Hulk. Are we playing the part of the general? Isn’t this a principle of energy or physics too? And metaphysics? What many people have been repeatedly pointing out that every time we misplace bullets or drones we create new enemies out of the survivors or their family members. Other circumstances create terrorists too. Being a suicide bomber is not a way to live. It’s an act of desperation when it looks like nothing else will work. A life not worth living is a life without hope. In some ways to some people ISIS offers more hope than we offer. Why else would they join? Hopelessness and desperation create terrorists. Do we offer alternatives that teach a different, more hopeful way to live? Does control work better than hope? If we can’t offer or show them a more hopeful path, then can’t we predict the path that many will take? There’s a lot we don’t talk about. Is there a pathway toward a more hopeful life? Couldn’t we just as easily bomb the area with a portion of the hundred million turkeys we consume during the holidays? Is there such as thing as a terrorist with a full belly? Or a terrorist with hope? The Israelis know how to survive in the desert. Can’t we/ they apply and teach others in the region how they survive and thrive? We don’t spend much time studying how some get into the position of being have-nots. At the same time we are looking at economic inequality in this country more and more. Only a few in that region really do well. Will we notice that we could possibly be on a similar path that might lead —continued on page 21 www.LifeConnectionMagazine.com

Dear EarthTalk: The holidays can be so wasteful. What are some ways we can green our celebrations this year? — Belinda McHugh, Los Angeles, CA

S

ipping eggnog, listening to carols by the fire and enjoying the beauty of colorfully decorated homes are all warm memories the holiday season conjures. Yet with the rising popularity of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, millions of people are now increasingly absorbed in the season’s commercialism. The National Retail Federation estimates that holiday sales this year will add up to $630.5 billion. All of this shopping generates a lot of trash. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans throw away approximately one million extra tons of trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. “Simplify the Holidays,” an e-booklet from the Center for a New American Dream (CNAD), reports that nine in 10 Americans believe holidays should be more about family and caring for others, not giving and receiving gifts, yet the average U.S. consumer plans to spend more this year—about $805—on holiday shopping than last year. To help provide meaningful ways to have fun with less stuff this season, “Simplify the Holidays” includes ideas for simple gifts, low-waste wrapping, ways to connect with your children during the holidays, and more. Readers are asked to “consider creating holidays that instill more meaning into the season and encourage more sharing, laughter, creativity and personal renewal.” “It’s not about depriving yourself of things during the holiday season,” Wen Lee, director of online media and engagement with CNAD, emphasizes. “It’s about refocusing on things that really matter, and reducing stress.” Additional easy, stress-free ways to respect the environment during the holidays include carrying reusable totes when shopping for gifts, and using LED lights, which last 20-30 years and require 1/50th the electricity of conventional lights for decorating your tree or home. According to CalRecycle, the 2.6 billion holiday cards sold each year could fill a football field 10 stories high—fortunately, the 16 | The Life Connection

multitude of e-cards available on the Web today provide a no-waste alternative. Further, the 33 million Christmas trees the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates are sold in North America each year don’t have to end up in landfills—some areas have recycling programs that turn Christmas trees into wood chips and mulch, and some companies will homedeliver full-size, potted live trees and pick them up after New Year’s and re-plant them. And with nearly 60 percent of Americans admitting they receive unwanted gifts during the holidays, asking friends and family what gifts they really need or want is an easy way to save waste and minimize time-consuming returns. Greening your holiday season certainly helps the environment, but research shows it is also good for personal and family well-being. The 2002 study, “What Makes for a Merry Christmas?” by psychologists Tim Kasser and Kennon Sheldon concluded that “family and religion provided the greatest benefit to holiday well-being.” Kasser recently told the American Psychological Association (APA): “[Our study] found that to the extent people focused their holiday season around materialistic aims like spending and receiving, the less they were focused on spiritual aims…we also found people reported ‘merrier’ Christmases when spirituality was a large part of their holiday, but reported lower Christmas well-being to the extent that the holiday was dominated by materialistic aspects.” CONTACTS: CNAD, www.newdream.org; EPA, www.epa. gov; APA, www.apa.org. the same concern, sharing prayers and ceremonies to heal Mother Earth. One highlight of this Parliament was to see a new generation of young leaders who talked about what they are doing to promote religious tolerance and discard violence of any kind. Their words and enthusiasm was very hopeful. Locally, I was proud to witness San Diego children involved in the peace organization Hands of Peace that facilitates dialogue among teenagers from Palestine, Israel and San Diego during the summer. They engage in social activities that open their hearts and gives them hope to envision life together. Zoey Serebriany was so moved by her experience that she started a Hands of Peace club in her school in North County to build a community of peacemaking, developing leadership, communication skills, conflict resolution and doing inner-peace work. Hands of Peace is seeking more families to host youth during the summer; encourage more young people to apply, get volunteers, and build alumni leadership throughout the year. Hands of Peace hopes to expand its program to adults in the future. Also in attendance were San Diegans Rev. Dr. Abigail Albert and Rev. Dr. Steve Albert, founders of the All Faith Center in Poway. Dr. Abigail was one of the session presenters on “Empowered Women of Faith.” They invite you to contact them for more about their year-round events to bring together people from

While it would be nice to live in a bubble apart from all that, taking the initiative about our own life—health and well-being—also means participating in the world. Sometimes that means pointing out what isn’t working in the world and wondering if there aren’t better ways to act or view the world than what we commonly hear. I’m amazed and amused that our leaders can think that one solution—their solution— can fix everything; and how obviously self-serving they can be. I’m thankful that support for the idea that there is one answer for all of us is dwindling. Thanks for supporting this venture in exploring paths and perspectives for living a purposeful and satisfying life. Have a great month,

to similar results? Will we become a nation of have-nots with only a minority living a good life—one with a future that is hopeful? Some say they live there already—in a place without hope. Does that work? Why not look at what is predictable? If we can predict something will happen we may find ways to direct it in another direction. No hope is too predictable. Rather than relying on control and force, maybe it’s time for approaches that don’t lead to violence and revenge. Where are the hopeful alternatives? This is obviously a longterm approach and now our challenge is balancing and considering both short-term and long-term remedies. The bad news and the good news is that this inequality, violence, and getting even has been with us forever, but we are also in what has been called an endless war. In other words, short-term solutions don’t work and we have time for long-term approaches. When do we begin? As with doing something about climate change, it just depends on how bad we want it to be before we address the problem and take actions that make a difference. Maybe it begins simply with knowing there are consequences when hope is taken from people—recognizing how that happens—then preventing that.

is the Season. It is a wonderful time of

year. Regardless of the religion, or perspective on how a Holiday should be celebrated, there is one common denominator among them all….light. It came to my attention when I received a promotional e-mail from Sri Lankan Airways, offering a discounted flight for the Diwali season. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. Its celebration includes millions of lights shining on housetops, outside doors and windows, around temples and other buildings in the Hindu and Buddhist communities. It just so happens to be around the same time as Hanukah and Christmas. Let us simply spread light within our own lives. I honestly feel that we should practice the spirit of this joyful season throughout the whole year. It is great to be part of TLC and involved with so many wonderful people connected to the conscious community. Like almost everything in my life, I jumped in with a strong passion to make a positive difference in this world. I’ve had so many happy experiences and learned a lot in this past year working in the publication industry. I’ve moved back to Florida and am researching my Ph. D. dissertation. It is a true de-

sire of mine to understand life on a deeper level. Why are things the way they are? If there is a law of attraction, then how does this Unified field create a magnetism of abundance, or lack thereof? Disease is so prevalent in today’s society. With epigenetics, one can literally turn on or off an expression of a fatal glitch in their DNA. Thoughts literally create re-

ality. There is an energy that connects everything. Just as the cosmos are formed, so are neurons in our brain. About 450,000 years ago, humans were functioning with a reptilian brain. Living in a world of grunting and making decisions based on primordial instincts of survival. Look at us now. The transformation is quite spectacular.

We are living in a time where media is allowing us to witness humanity evolving. From technology to consciousness, there is a movement, a force, pushing through society. Ones that want to make a difference. Life is made up of experiences. Each second that passes, we are coding new software. Our organs and cells are regenerating as we breathe. Every emotion, thought, action, is an discharge of electrical impulses. We are both transmitters and conductors. There is an electromagnetic field to all life. A vibration that resonates at specific frequencies. Learn
