Greetings

from the publisher An Invitation to the No-Fear Zone You've probably noticed some changes in us in the past several months— since our January 2015 issue. Were getting out to more and more places all the time—and appreciate all of you who have told us that you love what we're doing. Since we have been expanding our readership, I thought it might be a good time to let people know what we're doing and what we are about—and ask for your feedback. Basically we're about information, tools and resources to support us in achieving optimum health—mental and physical—in ways that are sustainable for us as well as our greater community; and we're presenting perspectives and ways to look at life and the world from a proactive and balanced view rather than an OMG victim-hood frame of mind. We are continually looking at ways to be more effective in life that empower people. Ways that lift the human spirit. You might say we're exploring and offering ways to stay in the no-fear zone. We're living in a rapidly changing society and world. What are some rudders that help us navigate? What are some trim tabs that can adjust the rudder when it gets too fixed and tough to turn? That means including more people, ideas and perspectives—and inviting you to participate with us. Why? Because of the obvious—the essence of community is what we share and have in common, and that includes the importance of expressing our individuality as well. When you look at our country it's obvious there are plenty of representatives of the what's-in-it-for-me mentality. On the flipside, there are challenges that come from being the opposite of selfish—the self-less approach. We need a balance point between the two. We all need boundaries and we all need to stand up for ourselves. One of the most obvious examples of this is being informed about what goes 4 | The Life Connection

into and on our food. With the increasing number of allergies people are experiencing, the people I talk to want to know what they are eating. Community awareness can bring attention to issues and projects that support all of us. Together, let's raise our awareness of what's important and identify the distractions from what's important. If group meditations and can expand our personal experience of a meditation, it's got to be the same when we share the same consciousness, doesn't it? Let's go grow! Give us your input about what's important to you and what you think about what we are doing. Send us a letter to the editor. We haven't run them very often over the years, because most of the comments we get are verbal—calls and comments from people we run into. We want you to know they are welcome and invite you to comment. We are doing more with the Farmers' Markets. We've brought back book reviews and CD reviews, have product reviews, and will be adding more movie reviews too. We're exploring different health modalities. Expanding to include more local issues and community activities is on the agenda. And there are several other things coming we are not going to tell you about—not yet—that we think you'll enjoy and find useful. We've redesigned the magazine—a lot—and we've changed things online and plan many more changes there. One way to listen to this is to hear what I'm saying as informational. What I'd like you to do is hear it as a request. Tell us what you think about what we're doing. What are we missing and what do you want to see more of? Thanks for being part of our community. Have a great month—and stay connected.

In her new book, Living With Intent: My Somewhat Messy Journey to Purpose, Peace, and Joy (April 7, 2015 /Harmony Books), Mallika Chopra Mallika shares a practical yet deeply personal look at her yearlong journey to discover some workable answers to feeling overwhelmed. “When you realize you need help, you can access a world of wisdom. area has also increased substantially recently. Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico and Ohio have all experienced more frequent quakes in the last year. All of the areas highlighted on the map “are located near deep fluid injection wells or other industrial activities capable of inducing earthquakes,” the study said. Mark Petersen, chief of the USGS' National Seismic Hazard Project, said the pattern of increased quakes is troubling. “These earthquakes are occurring at a higher rate than ever before, and pose a much greater risk and threat to people living nearby,” Petersen said. The release of the map comes as officials are coming to terms with the idea that wastewater disposal following oil and gas extraction is causing more earthquakes. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, involves shooting a high-pressure mix of water, sand and chemicals deep underground to extract oil and natural gas. The resulting wastewater is often forced underground as well, but can trigger earthquakes on faults that haven’t moved in a very long time.

5 Ways To Increase Your Spiritual Energy

W

hen it comes to our spiritual and political leaders, we put them on a pedestal and think of them not as people, but these beings are here to enlighten our world. When you’re feeling bored or stagnant, it rubs off on your energy field. It’s important to take time to reinvigorate your spiritual energy. Let’s shake it up!

1. Spend time in nature.

Nature truly is home. We live in houses that keep nature out now, but we came from nature. Because of those roots, spending time in nature cleanses your energy and reinvigorates your spirituality.

2. Begin and end each day positively

When you rise in the morning and go to bed at night, have yourself a good stretch and say a few words of positive affirmation. It’s important to be good to yourself, and starting and ending each day that way is a good idea.

3. Spend time with animals.

Animals aren’t just good for our spirits, but they’re good for our health too. Petting an animal you like actually lowers your blood pressure and the risk of heart attack.

4. Listen to the stories of others

It’s important to expand your perspective and

consciousness by taking the time to listen to and understand other people. Take a walk in someone else’s shoes and expand your worldview.

5. Have fun!

Build a sand castle! Take a run in the woods! Go swimming in the ocean! Just get outside and have some fun. It’s what we were meant to do anyway. Too often we deprive ourselves of a good time. Read more at http://higherperspective.com/2015/03/5ways-reinv-energy.html#gmYrhOGxYkuoAjBL.99

Life on Earth would be much easier if war didn’t exist, or if there were an easy path to end war forever. We’re going to explore the close connection between war and religion. First, we’ll briefly review the genetics of war and then explore the eight turning points in the history of war.

by David Gersten, M.D.

The Religion of War

In the last issue we explored the possible role that similarities in DNA between humans and apes may have played in our tendency toward violence. It’s worth summarizing that information. According to the latest estimates, humans, chimpanzees, and bonobos (apes) had a common ancestor. The three became separate species about 4 million years ago. Humans and chimps share 98.7% of their DNA. Rather amazingly, humans and bonobos also share 98.7% of their DNA. Chimps are competitive and often quite violent, not just in attacking other chimps that impinge on their territory, but also in attacking young chimps within their own group. Bonobos are highly cooperative, they often share, and they solve problems (and all forms of interactions) through sex. Humans are capable of manifesting both chimp and bonobo qualities. Does our environment play a role in which genes get expressed? In the last article I shared a hypothesis that when humans lived as hunter-gatherers, they were more like bonobos – peaceful and cooperative. Perhaps our “bonobo DNA” gets expressed in a hunter-gatherer environment? As we moved into lives of agriculture, we developed a sense of ownership. We protected and expanded our territory fiercely – like chimps. Our “chimp DNA” might get expressed in an agricultural environment.

8 Turning Points in the Evolution of War 1. Humans as Prey. The earliest humans lived in trees and were the prey of numerous predators. During this period humans were evolving along with chimps and bonobos. Like other prey we were looking over our shoulders for any sign of danger. 2. Tool Makers. With the development of tools, including stone weapons, humans left their tree-dwelling lives, stopped being prey and became alpha predators. The earliest known stone tools are 2.5 million years old. The sudden shift from prey to predator has led some authors to postulate that the very long history of being prey has remained with us as a collective repressed memory. 3. Language. As humans began to organize into small groups, we lived as peaceful, non-violent hunter-gatherers (manifesting bonobo-like genes). Numerous researchers believe that language developed at the same time tools came into use. Early language, which was developing in our years in small tribes, had its beginnings 50,000 to 2 million 12 | The Life Connection

years ago. Multiple factors are involved in our evolution from tree-dwelling prey to competitive agricultural communities. 4. Agriculture. The original core group of humans may have been as small as 300 pairs of us. We progressed from hunter-gatherers to agriculture, which involved managing land. Eventually, we developed the idea of “ownership of land,” which would have led us to become more and more protective of what we began to think of as “ours.” We owned land. We are not unlike other predators when it comes to territory. All predators have a pretty clear idea of their territory and they go to great lengths to protect their territory. 5. Greed. Once we were living in larger, agricultural communities, greed set in. We protected our land and wanted to obtain more of it. Greed can be understood as a mechanism to help us cope with times of scarcity. By obtaining “more,” we were hoarding in order to ward off the fear of times when food was scarce. Greed is a major turning point in human history. We can never have total certainty that there will be enough. With “greed consciousness” there is never enough. The industrial revolution moved mankind into a state of endless greed, which far exceeds genuine need – for those in power. 6. Self-awareness. A critical turning point for humans is self-awareness – the ability to think about the human condition, our relationship to Nature and deities, and the capacity for insight. Self-awareness could have arrived like a flash of lighting. DNA, whose expression is modified by environment, dictates most aspects of life. But self-awareness allows us to make conscious decisions. 7. Metaphysics. Along with self-awareness humans became aware of the “unseen” world. While most modern religions believe in one God, early man was probably aware of nature spirits, which have been called different things in every part of the world – fairies, gnomes, menehune, angels, elves, asura, and local deities. In many parts of the world people are still in touch with beings that some call “mythical” and others call “mystical” or “metaphysical.”

Religion 8. Religion. As humans progressed from a very small group in Africa to larger, organized communities, “culture” was developing. Culture includes language, art, dance,

A mosaic depiction of the Crusades music, rites and rituals, shared goals and beliefs, land and territory, a sense of one “whole group,” and religion. While individual self-awareness was developing, so was early, unstructured religion, which consisted of a sense of transcendence and a living, breathing connection to all of Nature, and a Greater Intelligence (God). Transcendence is “going far beyond normal experience.” It is the ability to move from love, fear, and greed to a sense of unity with self, others, Nature, and God. With that awareness we are able to move toward love, compassion, sharing, and generosity. Early religion would have evolved out of self-awareness, communication with Nature spirits, along with fear and reverence for the power of Nature. Rituals developed around our early spiritual connection and out of our desire to appease the gods and Nature deities. Floods, drought, fire, lightning, storms, volcanoes, and earthquakes were believed to be governed by deities, with a different deity for each force of Nature as well as locations deemed to have sacred powers. Rituals included art, dance, and music, as well as animal and human sacrifice. The belief that the gods could be appeased through blood sacrifice is very ancient. Many ancient cultures —continued on page 24

Water: More or Less What's going on? And what do we need to know about water and the drought? By Steve Hays

Y

es, I know, that's a pretty ambitious title. You won't find everything you need to know here, but then there's a lot more to discover about water, even by those who have been studying it for years. There may be, however, some broader issues that sometimes get lost when people feel pressured, fearful or get bombarded with foreboding tales of what's to come. California has always had wet and dry cycles. How long they last is unpredictable and whether or not global warming will change that—or has already permanently changed that—we don't know. We really don't know exactly how any of it will occur. What if someone came along and said they would bet everything they own that next year at this time we will be looking out the window and thinking "will all this rain ever end?" Would you bet all you own that won't happen? Most of us know better than to bet on the weather. One thing we know for sure is that water is important and vital for human beings and all other life forms on the planet. What's the most predictable is that if the drought made life here unbearable we'd adjust. We'd find alternatives. We'd move. None of us really knows exactly what global warming will look like, but the earth has always had dry areas so we also 14 | The Life Connection

have a history of experimenting and finding alternatives. It's not quite like the article I read the other day that suggested the next avocado I ate might be the last I'll eat that comes from California. Then again, maybe there are better places to grow avocados. If people want to eat avocados and the prices are going up because fewer people are growing them, don't we know that somebody else will find a way to grow them because it looks like it's profitable to do so? It may get worse before it gets better, but there are some predictable things that I think are worth knowing or remembering. There is also a world of possibilities and adjustments that can be made, that have been used in other places and some of them are already on the way here. So much so, that there is no way to touch on all of them in this issue.

What we know.

No matter what the issue, what's good to remember is this: if we get all of our information from a media that makes a profit based on how many of us tune in, we're going to hear more than a few "tune in at 11" teasers. Unfortunately those get-ready-to-be-afraid teasers can end up circulating through our minds when they are unre-

solved and we didn't follow instructions, then tune at 11 to gain relief. If we can be moved to a state of worrying about it—or OMG—we might tune in. We should know from past experience that we hear the extreme scenarios. We are given complex issues in sound bites. Should we expect more than sound-bite solutions?

Some Reactions

We've probably all heard that growing rice requires a lot of water and wondered why a state such as California has rice growers. Isn't rice grown best in rice paddies? Or where there is a lot of water and perhaps a monsoon season? Worse than rice is alfalfa, which is fed to cattle. The SDUT recently ran an article by a vegan that suggested that giving up meat will give us more water and better health too! Of the surface water consumed in California about 80% goes to agriculture. So obviously, some say, the problem is the farmers and we need to be smart about what we allow them to grow. Others question why we don't line the channels that bring this water, or cover them to lesson evaporation? Others know the problem is watering lawns, golf courses and parks.

Not simple solutions

While these seem like basic and obvious solutions, there is really more than meets the eye at first glance. Why not just charge the farmers or others who use more water a higher rate? Unfortunately, it's part of the California Constitution that you can't. I could use a lot of space trying to explain that, but ultimately would come back to this: a recent court decision just confirmed that principle and more lawsuits regarding that issue are expected. The Constitution says you can't charge more than what it costs to deliver the water, but, at the same time, people can be fined for wasting water. It's to be decided, and hopefully clarified. Or, looking at another issue, are we all ready to be vegans? I must have missed the memo that said this diet works for everybody—that one-size-fits-all. Wouldn't it be more palatable to promote a meatless Monday or something like that? How much would it make a difference? Does anyone know? Oxfam International said this: "By making one meal a week with lentils instead of beef, a family of four can save the equivalent of 17 bathtubs full of water." But how many of us eat beef every meal? Does a bath use more water than the shower? It's pretty individual, isn't it? It’s tricky when we get into the territory of telling others what they should be doing, should be growing, should be eating, and how that's the best for all of us.

Some Answers

I had some of my questions answered recently when I attended a meeting at the World Resources Simulation

Center (the SIMCenter) a project of the Global Energy Network Institute (GENI). They regularly bring together leading sustainability organizations and speakers for in-depth looks at the many issues we face today. (More at the end.) The best news is that there are people working on California's drought problem, and there is a plan. The people I heard were Toby Roy, the Regulatory Manager for the San Diego County Water Authority, and Luis Generoso, the Water Resources Manager for the City of San Diego Public Utilities Department and in charge of San Diego's Water Conversation Program. GENI founder Peter Meisen facilitated the meeting. I can't replicate here what they said in two-hours that night. There were approximately three-dozen pages of notes, bullet points and graphics that were all worth looking at. I came away from the meeting, however, knowing that there are people who are devoting themselves to figuring this out. They didn't seem surprised by or unprepared for any of the many questions asked them. Should we cover the canals bringing us water that pass through the desert, for instance? We could. Then again, that's an external water source. Wouldn't it be better to focus on ways to create more water here and not rely on external sources? If that direction would be cheaper is uncertain because no one really knows the cost of lining those canals or how much water we would prevent from evaporating. What is clearer is that we have a predictable amount of waste/sewage that needs to be processed; and processing it one way can give us water that we can use on golf courses, in parks, some industries and even agriculture—it's wastewater. When that water goes through an advanced treatment, it's potable and can be added to our reservoirs. Wastewater is a much more predictable source of water and no water district is currently recycling—treating and reusing—as much as they could be.

A Plan

I mentioned there were no surprise questions at the SIMCenter meeting. There is a plan and part of it is defined on the state level. They define the various stages of a drought and what steps are taken as we progress through these stages. The responses are not fixed in stone. They can vary in different water districts, and they can adjust to the local community and how people respond. Residents of the city of San Diego, for instance, were recently offered $750,000 in rebates to landscape and eliminate their thirsty lawns. The money was gone in a week. That response demonstrated the desire for that program and showed that it could be successful if they are able to do something similar again. People have also expressed a willingness to have wastewater treated and reused. That has not always been the case in San Diego. The bottom line is that what will work is only what people —continued on page 27 www.LifeConnectionMagazine.com

Sound Healing By Amelia Leigh, M.S.

Using Music for Healing, Therapy and Expansion of Consciousness There is the whole world of music. Music has been used for years to simply help relax people and put them in a better state of mind. It has been proven that when someone releases tension and relaxes, their immune system benefits. Musicians take Psychoacoustics into consideration when producing albums. Chanting and Toning A common technique is to teach people to resonate the body with their own voice. Chanting and toning are techniques for vibrating different areas of the body. It provides a deeper awareness of the way sound resonates naturally throughout the body. It is free and with you at all times. Learn the techniques!

Sound Healing, through various techniques and technologies, is the educated and conscious use of the sound energy to reach identified goals and promote wellness in the human system – including the expansion of consciousness. Sound Healing is founded on the premise that all matter is vibrating at specific frequencies. Science has proven that sound, or vibration, has a strong impact upon substance. Dr. Emoto has proven that sound changes the molecular structure of water. For example, the study of Cymatics has shown how sound creates geometric patterns in matter. Can sound really changes consciousness? Many ancient civilizations and modern indigenous cultures have used sound to heal and access higher levels of realization for thousands of years. There are a wide range of techniques that utilize sound as a tool for change. It can be as simple as humming om or listening to music or specific frequencies. This provokes a change in your chemistry and neurobiology.

Binaural Beat Brainwave Entrainment Binaural beats are created when two tones are detuned from each other by a small amount. The resulting third oscillation, the difference between the two frequencies, will automatically entrain the brain into different brainwave frequencies-delta, theta, alpha, beta, etc. This technique is used to help with sleep, learning, and enlightenment to name a few. The medical community now uses sound to relieve pain. Vibrate organs back into a healthy state. Our body consists mostly of water. Why not tune yourself to optimal health? Dear EarthTalk: What’s the latest on efforts to ban plastic bags? How many U.S. locales have instituted some kind of ban, and have these initiatives made a dent in the amount of plastic litter? — Melinda Clarke, New York, NY

C

alifornia made big news recently when it announced the first statewide ban on plastic shopping bags set to kick in during the middle of 2015. Beginning in July, large grocery stores, pharmacies and other food retailers in the Golden State will no longer be able to send shoppers home with plastic bags, while convenience markets, liquor stores and other small food retailers will join ranks a year later. Back in 2007, San Francisco became the first U.S. municipality to ban plastic shopping bags. In intervening years upwards of 132 other cities and counties in 18 states and the District of Columbia instituted similar measures. Of course, Americans are late to the party when it comes to banning plastic bags: The European Union, China, India and dozens of other nations already have plastic bag bans or taxes in place. But the trend here toward banning plastic shopping bags comes in the wake of new findings regarding the extent and harm of plastic in our environment. Since plastic isn’t biodegradable, it ends up either in landfills or as litter on the landscape and in waterways and the ocean. Plastic can take hundreds of years to decompose and releases toxins into the soil and water in the process. Littered plastic is also a huge problem for the health of wildlife, as many animals ingest it thinking it is food and can have problems thereafter breathing and digesting. The non-profit Worldwatch Institute reports that at least 267 species of marine wildlife are known to have suffered from entanglement or ingestion of marine debris, most of which is composed of plastic; tens of thousands of whales, birds, seals and turtles die every year from contact with ocean-borne plastic bags. A recent European Commission study on the impact of litter on North Sea wildlife found that some 90 percent of the birds examined had plastic in their stomachs. Another reason for banning plastic bags is their fossil fuel burden. Plastic is not only made from petroleum—producing it typically requires a lot of fossil-fuel-derived energy. The fact that Americans throw away some 100 billion plastic grocery bags each year means we are drilling for and importing millions of barrels worth of oil and natural

PLASTIC BAG FACTS 1) The world produces 4-5 trillion plastic bags every year. 2) 80% of plastic bags are used in North America and Western Europe 3) The average American uses 6 plastic bags per week. 4) California uses 13.8 billion plastic bags per year. 5) San Diegans use 500 million bags each year (95% of those end up in landfills) 6) Less than 5% of plastic bags are recycled statewide. 7) Public agencies in California spend over $300 million on coastal litter clean up every year. 8) Plastic bags linger in lakes, rivers, oceans and landfills for 400-1000 years. 9) The average reusable bag has over has a lifespan of over 700 single-use plastic bags. 10) Over a lifetime, use of reusable bags by just one person would save over 22,000 plastic bags. Sierra Club – San Diego 8302 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Ste. 101 San Diego, CA 858-569-6005 www.sandiegosierraclub.org gas for a convenient way to carry home a few groceries. It’s hard to measure the impact of pre-existing plastic bag bans, but some initial findings look promising. A plastic bag tax levied in Ireland in 2002 has reportedly led to a 95 percent reduction in plastic bag litter there. And a study by San Jose, California found that a 2011 ban instituted there has led to plastic litter reduction of “approximately 89 percent in the storm drain system, 60 percent in the creeks and rivers, and 59 percent in City streets and neighborhoods.” Environmental groups continue to push for more plastic bag bans. “As U.S. natural gas production has surged and prices have fallen, the plastics industry is looking to ramp up domestic production,” reports the Earth Policy Institute. “Yet using this fossil fuel endowment to make something so short-lived, which can blow away at the slightest breeze and pollutes indefinitely, is illogical—particularly when there is a ready alternative: the reusable bag.” CONTACTS: Worldwatch Institute; Earth Policy Institute. - See more at: http://www.emagazine.com/earth-talk/ plastic-bag-bans#sthash.7KoaLvA1.DmwdMTUS.dpuff. TRADITIONAL & HEALTHY SURROGATE MOM WANTED:

I mean this with full respect. I am sincerely committed to proceeding in the most conscious, considerate, caring, and supportive way possible.

I live in San Diego county. I seek a healthy, positive woman to be a Traditional Surrogate Mom and bear a child naturally, free of chemicals. Willing to pay good amount (also including extra for healthy food

& supplements/herbs, optional midwives, massage, etc. + more if willing to do any breastfeeding). You can choose to be completely non-involved after birth to being involved, at any future time and to whatever amount you wish, as the surrogate mom or separate parent up to co-custody. I would retain legal parenthood/primary physical custody. Regardless of surrogate mom’s optional involvement after birth from none to co, I would be legally 100% economically responsible. I certainly am open to the child having more than one source of love, nurturement, and being cherished. I am sincere, tested very healthy in all aspects, holistic, deeply caring, love kids, have time, commitment, heartfelt appreciation, and resources. I am a heterosexual man (not that gender preference should matter), who wants to have a genetic child and who cares greatly. I am a giving person, who rarely asks for anything, and would honor this as the ultimate blessing, privilege, & assistance. I would be very supportive of as natural a pregnancy as possible. That would include a healthy lifestyle and as natural childbirth as the surrogate mother is comfortable with - i.e. midwives, your significant other (and family) if you have one, myself, anyone else important to you, and with conscious doctor/hospital as back-up. Regarding a healthy lifestyle: I could be extra supportive there as I have therapeutically worked with many pregnant women and post-partum families – including with nutrition, herbs, massage therapies, and other natural therapies Again, there are many areas of pregnancy that I can be extra helpful. I am committed to doing this in the most conscious, considerate, supportive way possible both for you and to bring another loving, fulfilling soul and spirit into full being!! I would love to have one or two genetic children to love, nurture, & care for. Thank you for your consideration of becoming a surrogate angel. Sincere inquiries only: cherishingspirit@gmail.com “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.” Khalil Gibran

FOOD: Van Zante says there are lots of ways pet owners can do to help lessen their pets' carbon pawprints. "Start with what you feed your pet. Most vets are happy to help you design a diet that provides the vitamins and minerals your pet needs. Studies also show that chicken based-kibbles have less impact on the environment than beef." POO: Pick up after your pets! "When you don't, it can end up in the ocean or our drinking water. So pick it up. For extra impact, use biodegradable poop bags." PET CARE PRODUCTS: This includes environmentally friendly pet shampoo as well as dog toys and beds made from natural products like cotton or recycled materials. SPAYING AND NEUTERING: A pet can have as much impact on the environment as an SUV. Allowing your pet to create unwanted litters of puppies or kittens multiplies the issue. Altering your pets stops this problem 100%. FLEA AND TICK TREATMENTS: Some flea control products can pose a cancer risk to children. Ask your vet about safer options to control fleas and ticks. There are a number of environmentally friendly treatments that you can make at home. Van Zante says, "San Diego is one of the most pet-friendly cities in America. This Earth Day we have an opportunity to not only make a difference locally, but set an example globally. Adopt a 'recycled' pet this Earth Day." Religion of War from page 13

practiced human sacrifice. Modern religions did not necessarily practice human sacrifice as a way of appeasing Nature and its deities, but religion and war have existed hand-in-hand since ancient times as the sacrament of human blood.

Evolution: from Very Slow to Instantaneous The eight Turning Points in human history did not all occur during equal periods of time. Some steps took millions of years, while others, such as self-awareness, might have occurred instantaneously. One example of almost-instantaneous evolution involves bacteria. Clinical trials with penicillin began in 1940. By 1942 penicillin resistance was reported. At Hammersmith Hospital in London the rate of penicillin-resistant staph aureus was 14% in 1946. Today that figure is 90%. As a result, we now have bacteria that are resistant to multiple antibiotics. Bacteria known to cause illness have evolved incredibly quickly over 60 years. Similarly, some aspects of human evolution may have taken place very quickly.

War As Sacrament Biologist and author Barbara Ehrenreich, in her book Blood Rites: Origins and History of the Passions of War, theorizes that war has a strong connection with religion. To quote Ehrenreich, “To associate war with religion is to regard it as a sac-

rament, a holy ritual - and to experience the spiritual high that accompanies the sacred.” Religion provides a justification for killing and abandoning ethical and human values. “It is the religiosity of war, above all, that makes it so impervious to moral rebuke.” British author Oliver Thomson in his book A History of Sin states that during the crusades, between 1091 and 1291, battling in war was believed to be a direct path to heaven. Religious leaders encouraged the duty of war. Dr. Larry Dossey, who was a battalion surgeon during the Vietnam War, has shared some of the most personal experiences about war that I have read. In “War: A Vietnam Memoir” (from Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine; 1999;5) Dossey writes, “I can affirm from personal experience that the thrill of war is like no other. This peculiar state of awareness has been described as ‘ecstasy,’ an ‘altered state of consciousness,’ ‘one of humankind’s great natural ‘highs,’ ‘social intoxication,’ the feeling on the part of the individual of being a part of a greater body.” He adds, “Along with the dangers came the wildest sensations and most paradoxical satisfactions I have ever known. There are simply no comparisons to the emotions of war.” Israeli military theorist, Martin van Creveld said, “So elemental is the human need to endow the shedding of blood with some great and even sublime significance that it renders the intellect entirely helpless.” Trying —next page

Only someone who has fought on the battlefield can fully relate to the depth of the experience of war. I can read, try to sort out fact from fiction, and attempt to string together a variety of bits and pieces, creating a coherent whole. But I cannot know the experience of war. The atrocities of war go far beyond how many people died. Throughout history the victors of war have murdered and raped their way through the conquered land. But each country at war believes that, “Our boys don’t do such things.” War is Self against Other. Opposing sides lose the ability to see humanity in the other, who becomes the enemy. The enemy becomes an object, a thing quite different from us, something easy to kill without remorse. Each person has only one life to give. In the long history of war (all are holy wars) each wounded soldier has his PTSD to cope with. The families who have lost loved ones at war have to deal with their trauma. When we realize that much of human history is the history of war, we have to consider that trauma piles up. It doesn’t just go away. It is a great challenge for one person to recover from PTSD. On top of the individual’s inner struggle with PTSD are layers of traumatic experience that have affected the human psyche for thousands of years. In the next issue – the road to healing.

get behind and support. On this one we're definitely all in it together. Water is a vital resource we all need, and any programs that support less water usage or more water production will require the support and participation of the community to work most effectively. So who really decides if these programs are successful is really our community? I discovered that those who are “deciding” are exploring many alternatives.

Water Waste Fines

One of the things that I misunderstood was how fines for excess water use would apply. I think I may have been listening to the news too much or had not looked at it closely enough, but what was confusing to me was how people who were already conserving were expected to cut back an additional 25%. What I learned was there are a couple of different types of fines— and of course—many different water districts, even within San Diego County. Each water district has to reduce usage by a certain percentage, and that rate varies. It's the water district that is fined if they don't meet the reduction standards. They will be looking at ways to reduce usage, mostly on a larger scale. San Diego uses 83 gallons per capita per day. San Francisco uses 45 and Sacramento 129. If you use between 46 and 82 gallons a day and don't reduce much from last year, getting you to —next page

Simply put, there are just too many ways we can cut water usage that we are not going to list here. We will attempt to offer some in coming issues. Look at SmartWaterSD.org for some good ideas.

do much different is difficult, and the people speaking that night recognized that. When we all join in, of course, it works, but their main focus is on the larger users that will make a bigger difference if that usage is reduced. The other type of fine can come when people are clearly wasting water. When water is running down the street instead of being used on irrigation, or when people are watering on days it isn't allowed, or when it's raining.

How's this for a wild card that brings us back to our ability to predict the weather? According to an article in the Los Angeles Times (April 19) by Monte Morin, some scientists believe we may be going in the opposite direction—more rain! There is a pattern of wind, ocean current and temperature variations called Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). There is "a 500-mile-wide, 300-foot-deep wedge of warm seawater" that some scientists believe determines our El Niño and La Niña cycles. When it comes close to the California coast we get wet and warm weather. Not all scientists agree when and if that will happen, but some think that the current PDO pattern will

could "bring soaking rains to Southern California this winter . . . ." It's a good article and worth reading. This brings me back to my favorite drum to beat—my 'why don't we' solution when it comes to water scarcity. If it does rain, can we handle it? Collect it? Or do we complain about floods? Isn't using reservoirs to collect water akin to putting a teacup in a shower and thinking we are efficient at collecting warm-up water? I wonder what difference it could make if there were more ways to collect water? We'll explore that and other news about water conservation in the next issue.

Amelia's Note Great to be welcoming in a new season here in Southern Cali. April showers bring May flowers. Wait, we are in a drought! Although, I still see beautiful flowers. That means nature flourishes with perseverance. There is a strength that lies within every living thing creature. It also shows that perspective is key. What is it that you allow yourself to see - the vivid color of a flower or the dust that surrounds it? Interpretation in your own mind’s way of making sense of the reality that exists through the continuous evolution of experiences. A good metaphor I once heard was about a giraffe and a turtle walking next to each other on the same path. One cannot speak of the others viewpoint. The turtle watches out for a rock while the other a tree branch. We can look at life as a canvas. There are several backgrounds given to each of us as a template. Then we build

By Amelia Leigh, M.S. our toolbox and palate as we each paint the masterpiece of our existence. What are you painting? As I stated last month, we must ride the wave. There are some things that are out of our control. Storms exist, yet you can always rely on the sun to appear again. It has always been a routine of mine to watch the sunset. This is nature’s perfect symbolism for closing a day and letting go. How are you going to convince a sun to not set? You can’t! Just enjoy the view and train yourself to release any stress. Look up into a night sky and gaze upon the same stars that have been there for billions of years. Be free in your thoughts. Know that we all want a pretty picture, however we must use our paintbrush. Be cognizant, as true colors will always shine through.
