Across the country the cost of living has increased dramatically forcing people to reign in their spending. London, the South East and Wales have seen a rise in the cost of living of 5.8 per cent. As a result, people have been changing the way in which they spend money and cutting back on non essentials. 81 per cent say that they believe the credit crunch has influenced the way they spend their money. And 44 per cent say that the credit crunch has meant that they have dramatically cut back on spending. Unfortunately, for some people, non essential spending includes spending on their family pet, with animal charities reporting that they have seen an increase in abandoned animals. They believe that people are finding themselves in such severe financial difficulty that they can no longer afford to look after their pet. Vanessa Eden, who works at the RSPCA’s largest animal rescue centre in Fareham, Hampshire, said: “It’s sad that current economic problems are having a knock-on effect on the animals. As a result, people have been changing the way in which they spend money and cutting back on non essentials. 81 per cent say that they believe the credit crunch has influenced the way they spend their money. “We have had more people bringing in their pets because they can no longer afford to pay their energy bills, let alone vet bills or pet food.
