How to Properly Close a Credit Card Account How You Can Improve Your Credit Score Here ph
There is a right and a wrong way to close a credit card account, and by doing it the right way, you can save yourself a lot of potential headaches. Here are six steps to do it.
Step 1 – Start by contacting the card company’s customer service line. You can find the customer service number on the back of your credit card. Once you’ve dialed and are connected, follow the instructions and push the right buttons in order to reach a live representative. However, if the automated system is a huge headache, you can press zero several times and the system will often fast-track you through to a live person. Step 2 – Be sure to have your credit card number ready because that’s one of the first things they’ll ask for. Chances are you’ll also need the last four digits of your Social Security number for verification purposes. I realize that at this point that you’re probably frustrated enough to hang up, but don’t do it. This is what they want you to do. These companies don’t want you to close your account and this is why they do things the way they do. Step 3 – At this point you can inform the representative that you’d like to close down the credit card account. Be warned, they will fight back. In fact, they’ll say almost anything to try and get you to leave the account open. This is where you have to be strong and not allow them to talk you out of closing the account. Step 4 – Once you’ve convinced the customer service representative that you really do want to close the account, make a note on your calendar of the date, time and the name of the representative who closed the account. If possible, get a confirmation number.
