the world is spinning ever faster. but WE ARE NOT. Slowly but surely, Skargaarden is growing. We’re now in more stores, in more and more countries, and our collection is steadily broadening and deepening. And in 2013 we are launching two new furniture ranges: Djurö and Grinda. Furthermore, our popular cushions will be available in more designs and colours. We are also very proud to present Tipi, our outdoor lighting range, in association with leading Swedish light designers Ateljé Lyktan. And while we’re on the subject of quality partner-suppliers, Reijmyre glassworks still make virtually all the blown glass in our lanterns and champagne coolers. Everything should go at its own pace, regardless of whether it is design or craftwork. There’s no point in working slowly for the sake of it, but there’s every reason in the world not to rush something to fruition. Welcome to Skargaarden 2013.

kargaarden makes leisure furniture, and by that we mean furniture that is beautiful enough to have indoors, but resilient enough to withstand the great outdoors for much of the year. Our furniture defies being classified by where you put it; it’s what you use it for that counts. And what do you use it for? Well, put simply, nothing whatsoever. Our furniture is made for those moments when you are free from the demands and routines of everyday life. When you can be utterly purposeless and unproductive. Everything is produced with an uncompromising dedication and quality that is obvious wherever our furniture is placed: whether in the lobby of a hotel, by a pool, or in front of a roaring log fire in a country cottage. We’re from Sweden. Is that of any importance? Well, we think so. From the graceful subtlety of a Grinda chair, to the voluptuous comfort of the Falsterbo sofa and the simple serenity of the glass and concrete in a Möja candle light – there’s a distinct quality to it all, making it all relate to one another. We believe that this illusive trait, that refuses to be put in precise words, defines us as Swedish. There are links to the local craftsmanship of the past, in every carefully elaborated detail. We are the continuation of a heritage; a part of a tradition that we are proud to carry on. It’s what we are. What we couldn’t have been anywhere else. Yes. It’s important.

SKARGAARDEN

We work with the most exclusive commodity there is. Free time. We make leisure furniture, and by that we mean furniture made for a situation and a feeling rather than for a specific place. Of course lots of people use our furniture outdoors. But our furniture also probably ends up in conservatories, on verandas and even in dining rooms and drawing rooms. And that’s okay. The important thing is that our furniture is there when you need to relax: either spending time with your family and friends, or just grabbing a moment to yourself. You can define luxury in many ways, but this is ours. We believe that luxury is the freedom to devote yourself to absolutely nothing: to ignore the demands and musts of everyday life. It is for these occasions that we make furniture and interior design details that are as exclusive as the occasions they are crafted for. Chairs that hold your thoughts, tables that keep you company and cushions that cradle your dreams; and lamps and lanterns that counter the gloom at dusk, and blankets that warm the evening.

SKARGAARDEN

Grinda Standing on the gravel in front of his enormous Art Nouveau villa, lawyer and financier Henrik Santesson smokes a cigarette, his eyes squinting in the soft June light. It is 1930, and he is on the island of Grinda in the Stockholm archipelago. A place where cows wander around as if nothing matters to them apart from the grass. A thousand miles away, in Dessau, Marcel Breuer sits on one of the Bauhaus Schools’ rooftop terraces. He is dressed in a casual summer suit and bowtie. When he shuts his eyes he imagines metal that can be moulded into any sort of shape. When he opens his eyes he sees the same stars that Santesson sees. In many ways, the Grinda dining chair pays homage to both these men. Quiet steel pipes that carry rustic wooden slats without a murmur. At the same time, both aesthetically functional and so beautiful it feels natural on the gravel, in front of a house, or on an island where the cows are still wandering about.

The ingenious design of the Grinda chair: Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get fooled by the minimalistic, almost ascetic, look. The springiness in the construction and the carefully bended teak makes it very comfortable. Carefully crafted for long breakfasts, thick books and really hard crosswords.

Häringe Häringe Castle nestles by Landfjärden Bay. It had stood there for 272 years when Torsten Kreuger purchased it in 1929. Torsten was a man with little understanding of historically listed buildings and a keen interest for new fashions. He quickly installed a fridge in the kitchen, a skittle alley in one of the wings and Sweden’s first outdoor swimming pool in the castle gardens. Over time, the castle became a jet-set haunt where one could see both Josephine Baker and Greta Garbo. Decadent? Perhaps a bit. Fashionable? To some extent. If you were to design a piece of furniture according to the same principles, you could base it on solid traditions with precise, balanced lines. To the classic, original design you might add a decadent playfulness and a very relaxed way of relating to luxury. This was what we did when we developed the range of dining furniture we call Häringe. Greta Garbo would have been the perfect accessory. But it works with any mysterious beauty in dark sunglasses.

Our H채ringe range is sophisticated and refined in expression and entirely genuine in form. What you see is what you get: a steel frame, completely free from seams and joints, strips of wood, and cushions in fabric or leather. The series includes a dining chair, an armchair, a sofa, tables and a sunlounger.

OXNÖ Oxnö lies on the island of Gålö in the Stockholm archipelago. Here, pines edge towards the waterline, held back by grey rocks with the quiet authority of millions of years of experience. This is not a spectacular place, but uncomplicated and beautiful: precisely the sublime qualities that inspire our Oxnö range of dining chairs and tables. Oxnö chairs are designed with and without armrests. Both have curved slats in the seat, which by its ingenious design seem to float just outside the frame. The details are innovative and intricate, but the overall impression is so simple that it almost feels perfunctory. It is almost as though the chair is aware of its own clarity. Meanwhile in Oxnö: nothing, absolutely nothing, happens that has not already happened for the past ten thousand years. The same pines, the same rocks.

Our Oxnรถ range is made for indoor and outdoor dining. The chairs have cleverly attached rounded seats, giving them a floating appearance. Oxnรถ furniture comes in teak and ash painted white or black.

Falsterbo There is something grand in the name Falsterbo. It expands slowly, letter by letter. One need only print it to produce a logo that exudes bohemian nobility and natural privilege. Just say the word and imagine the shoreline embracing the sea, which turns to kiss the sky. In this harmonious summer idyll, artist Joseph Frank drew five summer houses – the only ones he drew in Sweden. Here, southern Swedish nobility bathes in the nude. And, of course, there are also golf clubs and horse shows. Our Falsterbo lounge series encapsulates all this with a very casual elegance, where strict lines are accompanied by generous cushions. Ideally, they should be placed in the sparse pine forest near the sea. But it works on your veranda, too. Guaranteed.

Our Falsterbo range is luxurious and inviting. Deep sofas and armchairs with wooden frames and thick cushions (filled with down for indoor use and polyester for outdoor use) turn something as mundane as sitting down into a genuine experience. The series includes an armchair, two and three-seat sofas, a sunlounger and a table in three different sizes.

Djurö Djurö is a secret place. It’s in the middle of Lake Vänern, isolated from the world by freshwater that stretches into the distance: you feel as though you are out at sea, or the last person on Earth. Our Djurö furniture range is not quite so secret. But it does share some of the same qualities: the same sensation of other-worldliness. Djurö has a link to the past, to the iconic Scandinavian teak furniture of the 50s. It also gives a very nonchalant nod to the future, in the durable acrylic fabric in the chair seat and backrest. Together, the past and future combine to create a strong sensation of the here and now. Severely simple, without being the least bit Spartan. Rather like the island that gives its name to this range of furniture. Fallow deer also roam Djurö, regal and graceful, but seldom seen. This is a secret place.

Is God really in the details? Then consider Djurรถ armchair a sacred piece of furniture. The simplicity shining from a distance turns into ingenious sublimity once you take a closer look.

Some details Skargaarden furnishes moments of peace and quiet. We decorate the dappled light of daily life, when you can be utterly purposeless and unproductive. And for this you need more than just furniture. That’s why we make cushions that are designed for outdoor use, in many different colours and designs, so that everyone can rest their head on something soft. We also make pure wool blankets, with leather details, that keep you warm as August becomes September. They also turn any sofa into something a little special. We make storm lanterns in Reijmyre blown glass, and for the first time, in association with Ateljé Lyktan, we are making our own version of the Tipi outdoor lamp, in teak and black lacquered steel. In our collection you will also find a champagne cooler and details for table settings.

In June the days seem endless. In August you’ll have to fight the darkness. In the most stylish way possible, that is. Like the hanging candle lantern with its leather straps. Or the Tipi lamp in teak and steel, in collaboration with renowned Ateljé Lyktan.

Every Sandhamn Champagne cooler is blown and cut by hand. This is not the fastest or cheapest way to do it, to put it lightly. But the result speaks for itself. We do this in collaboration with Reijmyre glassworks. It’s located in the legendary Kolmården wildwood, surrounded by myths and trolls, and it’s been around since 1810. Needless to say, we are humbled before their skills and passion.

Grinda MATERIAL AND COLOUR GUIDE

Grinda dining furniture comes in teak or oak slats with a black painted steel frame and in white painted ash slats with a white painted steel frame. Grinda dining furniture includes a side chair, arm chair and four different sizes of tables to decorate your balcony, veranda, wooden deck, the lawn or wherever you choose to arrange lovely dinner parties. Although it has a minimalistic look, the spring steel frames of the chairs, as well as the gently curved wood in the seat, make it very comfortable. Dining range in teak or painted ash in black or white. May be used in the open air or indoors, it’s really for you to decide. Nicely worked-through design, as in the ingeniously mounted seat which gives the impression of floating in the air just above the frame. The cushions of superior quality Sunbrella fabrics, made to endure both the sun and the rain. Exclusive and generous for outdoor, covered outdoors areas and indoor areas. For outdoor areas: teak frames for outstanding protection against moisture and temperature changes. Our cushions are filled with foam encased in polyester, with covers made from outdoor fabrics by Sunbrella. Please note that our cushions are not waterproof. The teak turns into a gorgeous silver grey if not oiled every year. For covered outdoor areas and indoor areas: black and white painted frames. Cushions in Sunbrella fabric or linen. The linen cushions contain luxurious down in a linen cover. Back-support cushions are also filled with down to guarantee maximum comfort. Linen cushions are for indoor use only. Djurö MATERIAL AND COLOUR GUIDE

Our Djurö range includes a lounge armchair in teak with an acrylic fabric from Ferrarri in the seat and back and two sizes of round tables in teak. If you place it outside, you can oil the teak once a year, to maintain the look – or choose not to oil it and let it turn into a silvery grey patina. The Batyline Duo fabric is durable and made to withstand the outdoor elements. Design by Matilda Lindblom.

MATERIAL Teak or oak? Teak is highly resistant to rot and is almost unaffected by sun, rain, frost and snow. Kiln-dried teak is compact, dense and has natural oil content. Oak has similar qualities, but lacks the natural oil content. Oak Therefore, over time, oak developss small natural cracks in the wood surface and a beautiful grey colour that gives the furniture a beautiful patina. Teak develops no small cracks, but it attains the same beautiful silver-grey patina if it is not oiled. Teak is absolutely the best choice in terms of durability for outdoor furniture. Oak is a fantastically beautiful wood for outdoor furniture with the patina of an aged wood, but it is not quite as durable. â&#x20AC;&#x192; We recommend that you choose teak for furniture to be left outdoors year round in the sun, rain, frost and snow. But if you want to use the furniture in covered outdoor environments or seek to achieve a beautiful patina, oak is a good choice. But be aware, however, that oak has a shorter lifespan than teak when exposed to weather. PAINTED WOOD Our painted furniture is made of kiln-dried eucalyptus and ash.

Kiln-drying is important so that the wood is not affected by cold and heat after it has been painted. The furniture is hand-painted with the best available paints for marine use to withstand weather. â&#x20AC;&#x192; We recommend eucalyptus and ash for outdoor environments and oak for roof-covered areas. The furniture is designed for outdoor use, but it is affected by weather conditions in the same way as wood in marine environments is affected in general. OUR SELECTION OF MATERIALS AND THE ENVIRONMENT All our oak, teak, ash, linen, leather and glass is selected from a long-term perspective of sustainability. Our teak comes from carefully selected approved plantations with the highest available quality. The oak comes from wood suppliers who take great responsibility for the environment in all stages of production. Our linen comes from wellknown Romo and our outdoor fabrics are from Sunbrella and Ferrari, both leading companies in the development of weather-resistant fabrics.

care of our furniture Wood is a material that needs to be looked after well. By caring for your furniture properly, you can increase its lifespan and keep it beautiful. One simple way to do this is by wiping it with a damp cloth, so that pollen, bird droppings and other types of dirt do not gain a foothold. Oiled oak Our oiled oak furniture is finished with quality oil. Maintenance needs are determined by how much the furniture is exposed to the sun, water and general use. However, a rule of thumb is that you should oil your furniture twice a year. Always wash with soap and water before you apply oil (mould and algae can be treated with chlorine or similar). Rinse well, but never use a high-pressure hose. Allow to dry, scrape off flaking oil and rub gently. Apply one to three coats of Skargaarden wood oil. Follow instructions provided on the packaging. Over time, small cracks will form in the wood; this is entirely normal and gives what is known as patina. If you prefer, you can choose not to oil

your furniture. It will then develop a lovely grey hue, but will be less resistant to the elements. Painted wood Painted surfaces can usually go three to four seasons outdoors without a great deal of maintenance. However, if paint gets chipped or becomes worn, you need to repair it immediately. Sand and clean the affected area and reapply Skargaarden paint specifically made for outdoor use. Teak We recommend that you allow your teak furniture to age naturally and that you simply clean it thoroughly once or twice a year. If you want to retain the golden-brown colour of new teak you will commit to a regular maintenance program. If the furniture is left to age naturally outside by being exposed to light, air and rain, then the surface of the teak will gradually change to beautiful soft, silver-grey.

LONG LIVE THE INDEFINABLE, THE BOUNDARY COUNTRY It’s easy, really. Our furniture is made for the places and the spaces in between things. Skargaarden is Swedish for archipelago, where the land and sea meet and greet, gently nestling each other. The reed, part under water, part above the surface. The sand on the beaches is the bottom of the sea. There are perhaps limits, borders and boundaries. They just can’t be told. We make furniture that is perhaps at its best when you place it between the inside and the outside. On the patios and verandas, in the winter garden or in the room with the sliding landscape windows. When you can’t say whether you’re indoors or outside. And it really doesn’t matter.
