from the chairman

NEW YEAR, NEW LIFESTYLE In my life, I’ve made many New Year’s resolutions that I abandoned after a few weeks or even a few days. Most involved exercising more and eating less. But here’s one resolution I vow to fulfill: The Lifestyle magazine you hold in your hands will be more relevant, interesting and even more beautiful. And that’s healthy. For the past 10 years, Lifestyle Magazines has covered your community’s movers, shakers, philanthropists, activists, business leaders, civic leaders, and cultural icons. For 2013, we want to do more and do it better. And we need your help. If you resolve to help us, you could win… • a brand-new iPad Mini • a pair of tickets to Club Red at the BB&T Center • shopping sprees at local retailers • complimentary dinners at local restaurants So what must you do to win these valuable prizes? Just give us your honest opinion about the magazine you’re reading right now. We’re conducting a wide-ranging readership survey. We hired a professional, third party, research firm that will keep all opinions strictly confidential. They will aggregate the results and give us the information we need to deliver you the magazine you want. So please make it your New Year’s resolution tohelp us keep ours. Take the survey at www.lsmsurvey.com.

ARY’S B LETTER

IN THIS ISSUE If there’s any theme running through this first issue of 2013, it

8

can be summed up in one word: persistence. Our cover story features prominent Broward businessmen who didn’t let the recession depress them. They worked harder and smarter – and now they see brighter times ahead. And in our People profile, Rixys Alfonso opens up – for the first time in great depth – about her tears and triumphs, from raising a son who stared down death to her own childhood facing the Mariel Boatlift. If you want to persist in your New Year’s diet resolution, our health expert Dave Sherman has some tips that have worked for his clients.

BEHIND THE SCENES One of Lifestyle Magazines’ resolutions was to move into new offices in the heart of our readership area. So this month, you can find us at 3511 West Commercial Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. If you’re in the

neighborhood, stop by.

COMING UP We plan to roll out many new features this coming year, but the first round is coming next month. Check out our new-and-improved dining section in the February issue. And for our February cover story? For our Valentine’s Day special issue, we’re going to share with you stories about how some big names in Broward met – and got married. Stay tuned. t. BEATS SOLO HD HEADPHONES

say what?

BCBG’S WINTER COLLECTION

Dr. Dre is known for his music and now for his headphones. Beats Solo HD headphones are made to be a lighter and less expensive onear version of Studios – Dre’s more expensive headphone product. Compact enough to fit in your purse, Beats Solo HD headphones carry the powerful signature sound Beats by Dr. Dre products are known to produce. Solo headphones are the only Beats product that comes with two speakers inside each can for better sounding highs and lows, and you can easily switch between music and incoming calls – you never have to take off your headphones.

S

Noted designers BCBG MAX AZRIA GROUP – with a store at Sawgrass Mills – is set to announce their winter collection. Inspired by Rive Gauche and a sense of creativity and sophistication, this new collection will feature colors such as hot pink and turquoise; neon floral and paisley prints; cheetah in fuchsia and camel worn with white and a splash of black. Key silhouettes include stylish and chic Bowie jackets, skinny relaxed printed pants, Rhianna trouser pants, halter tops and high-low tops. Fabrics for the winter season mix an array of textures and looks: crepes, ultra suedes, and silk blends. Accessories to make this collection pop even more include gold and silver jewelry, clutches in colors such as fuchsia, oversized sunglasses, and colored and metallic shoes. The master designers behind the BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP’s new collection feel that this collection is different from others because it’s colorful but more sophisticated and can be worn at the resort with whites or at more elegant evenings with darks.

SNÖBAR ICE POPS

Booze-infused ice pops sound delicious and fun, right? That’s what Eddie Masjedi thought when, one night at home, he tried to create a special dessert for his wife. So he mixed different flavors of alcohol into his ice cream – and SnöBar was born. SnöBar’s two types of ice-pops, Margarita and Cosmopolitan, replicate the flavor and experience of the traditional cocktails. The Margarita ice-pop is made with premium tequila, lime and triple sec. The Cosmopolitan ice-pop is made with premium vodka, triple sec and cranberry. But Eddie didn’t stop there. He also decided to create delicious ice creams such as Grasshopper, Pink Squirrel, and

= Brandy Alexander Chocolate Chip. With a pure alcohol content range of 3.59 to 6.41 percent (8.22 to 14.67 alc/vol), each serving of SnöBar ice-pops and ice cream has the equivalent alcohol percentage of a full cocktail. Here are some of the place where you can find them locally… • Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, 505 Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. • Marriott Harbor Beach, 3030 Holiday Drive, Fort Lauderdale • ABC Fine Wine #50, 2611 N.W. 124th Ave., Sunrise • Cellars Wine and Spirits, 1739 E. 3 The World’s Best Swinger’s Clubs WITH OVER 100 MILLION GOLF PLAYERS GLOBALLY, there are so many different types of golf resorts and/or golf courses to choose from worldwide. There are various things you need to consider when choosing the golf vacation best suited for you. According to Lisa Crawford at SitInMySeats VIP Tickets, Travel & Concierge Services, one of the main things you need to consider before booking any golf experience is what type of vacation you want to have. Do you want a relaxing round of golf or would you prefer an extremely challenging course? Do you want to combine an amazing trip to an exotic place? Or are you looking for the best

of both worlds? We’ve compiled our own list based on our clients’ experiences and our team’s research. Left off the list is the infamous St. Andrews because, quite frankly, there is hardly any course that could stand the chance against the “Home of Golf.” So here is our list of… TOP 5 EXOTIC INTERNATIONAL GOLF DESTINATIONS 5 THE PENINSULA HOTEL AND THE THAI COUNTRY CLUB– This golf & lodging destination located in Bangkok could be classified as a destination on the most exotic level. Designed with

4 5 everyday use members in mind, this world-class golfing destination hosted the Asian Honda Classic won by Tiger Woods in 1997. 4 THE GOLDEN BEAR LODGE & SPA - Cap Cana, Dominican Republic – With its sugar-white sand beaches, sunshine, and tropical blue Caribbean waters, there is an intimacy that only a resort like this can offer. 3 THE LEGEND GOLF & SAFARI RESORT (ENTABENI SAFARI CONSERVANCY IN SOUTH AFRICA’S LIMPOPO PROVINCE) – South Africa has its own allure, and few places can match its beauty. Pair an exotic vacation destination with one of the most unique and inspiring course layouts in the world and you’ll find yourself at The Extreme 19th Hole – accessible only by helicopter.

2 THE LODGE AT KAURI CLIFF (MATAURI BAY, NEW ZEALAND)– Combines two sister properties to create an exotic experience that encompasses the entire country of New Zealand. Many say that you have not golfed until you have golfed in New Zealand. 1 OLD HEAD GOLF LINKS (SOUTHWEST COAST OF IRELAND IN COUNTY CORK) – A 220-acre diamond-shaped piece of land that extends more than two miles into the Atlantic Ocean. No wonder it’s one of the most recognized and sought-after golf experiences anywhere on Earth. Need more information on planning your fantasy golf trip close to home or far away? CRAZY ABOUT CARS? SO WAS ANDY WARHOL. The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale partnered with PNC Bank to present Warhol and Cars: American Icons, bringing more than 40 distinctive pieces of art to South Florida. This is the first exhibition to examine Warhol’s fascination with automotive vehicles as products of American consumer society, making it

a must-see for art and car fanatics alike. The Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey organized the exhibition, which traces the development of Warhol’s work with cars throughout his career. Warhol and Cars pieces date all the way back to 1946 and include early line drawings and 1950s commercial work, paintings, and works on paper from the 1960s through the 1980s that present his signature silkscreen process.

We are happy that this partnership allows us to share our collection with the cultural community of South Florida.” As one of the most iconic and influential artists of the 20th century, Andy Warhol helped define America. His signature images of such American products and celebrities as Campbell’s soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor have become instantly recognizable. “PNC believes in the power of culturally engaging programs to strengthen our communities,” said Craig Grant, regional president,

An exhibition catalogue published by the Montclair Art Museum, Warhol and Cars: American Icons, written by Gail Stavitsky, MAM chief curator, is the first to focus on Warhol’s Cadillac paintings and other car-themed works within the context of his career. The catalog is available at Books & Books at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. “Andy Warhol defied the styles of traditional art through his unique focus on American culture and advertising, which later credited him as a pioneer of the Pop art genre,” said William Stanton, Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale’s interim executive director. “It’s important that our repertoire of exhibitions span a variety of genres that appeal to art enthusiasts of all tastes.”

NSU MOA AD

“The Andy Warhol Museum is delighted that, through the generosity of PNC, Warhol and Cars: American Icons will be seen at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale,” said Eric Shiner, director of The Andy Warhol Museum. “This show is indicative of Warhol’s larger

practice of examining popular American culture - and what could be more American than cars - through the lens of his art. Warhol and Cars contains some of Warhol’s most accessible and beautiful images including representations of Cadillacs, Buicks, and even the VW Beetle.

Following a successful run at the Birmingham Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale will be the last stop on the Warhol and Cars: American Icons exhibition tour.

PNC Bank, Florida East. “We are excited that our relationship with the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh helped to bring this unique exhibition to Ft. Lauderdale. This not only compliments the Museum’s permanent collection of contemporary art, but supports the cultural vitality of this region.”

Weight Loss Resolutions 4 Reasons You Fail Every Year BY DAVID SHERMAN

In my 15 years experience in owning and operating my own gym, the Rolodex of reasons why people fail to achieve success seems to keep growing. It’s no wonder the fitness industry is a $65 billion business with a 95 percent failure rate. I’ve put together the top reasons in my experience why people continue to struggle with losing weight and achieving better overall health…

1

PEOPLE DON’T LIKE TO EXERCISE This can’t be overstated. Sure, a fraction of the population enjoys exercise, myself included. But even we don’t enjoy the actual work. It’s the payoff that we crave: looking and feeling better. I associate it with an actual job: You punch the clock, suffer through your work week, and collect your check on Friday. So clients come up with all kinds of creative ways to cancel a session (that is, skipping out on work). My favorite: The women who come to the gym after doing their hair and tell me, “I will work out but I can’t sweat right now.”

2

SETTING UNREALISTIC GOALS A common consultation question is, “What do you believe to be your ideal weight?” A 170-pound middle-aged woman will answerme, “120 pounds.” My next question is, “Have you ever weighed that in your adult life?” The answer…NO! Guess what? That’s an unrealistic goal. People spend years destroying the

26

JANUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

shape of their bodies. Then they make one small twotimes-a-week commitment to exercise, not even changing their eating habits – and they expect drastic results within six weeks. When they don’t see it, they give up!

3

DIETING INSTEAD OF CHANGING YOUR LIFESTYLE The third reason is the dreaded diet! Being on a diet implies that at some point you’ll go off a diet. Where will that leave you? The same place you started, looking for some quick fix. I had a client that tried every other fad diet and then spent $100 on a patch to speed your metabolism. The last page of the instructions said, “This patch will only work if you exercise regularly and eat a sensible diet.” Really? If I could do that, I wouldn’t need this ridiculous patch.

4

CONFRONTING YOUR PSYCHOLOGY I can put you on a food plan and train you – and you’ll have temporary success. But what’s going on in your personal life is causing your destructive behavior. Let us figure that out before true success is achieved. I have a client who was 100 pounds overweight. He lost a good portion of it, in the proper way, but he didn’t begin to touch the reasons how he got to this weight in the first place. It was no accident, people just aren’t that hungry. In fact, for many people, hunger is way down on the list of reasons to eat. He lost 80 pounds and slowly gained back 120. People generally do what they have always done unless they discover why they do it and make some real changes in their life! Please contact me with any questions or comments at gpslifestyle@hotmail.com or call me at 954-649-3283.

Executives Reflect on Recession, Bullish on Future BY JEFF ZBAR

DRIVING TO RECOVERY Need a barometer for how the economy is performing? Ask an auto dealer. “Big ticket” items like luxury cars can be the first to hit the brakes when the economy serves up potholes and barricades. Jim Dunn knows this. Yet, as vice president and general manager of JM Lexus, Dunn saw 2012 end with a 15 percent increase in

business over a year ago. That tally – projected to reach 5,000 vehicles at year-end 2012 – is up significantly from the 3,996 cars sold in 2009, yet still down from the 2008 peak of 7,722, he says. With more than 40 years in the automotive business, Dunn knows how to ride out tough times – and that’s not by idling. He’s instituted innovation and rallied the team around a mantra

JM LEXUS

DAVID SCHULMAN KNOWS BUSINESS CYCLES – THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THOSE THAT STOP CLIENTS IN THEIR TRACKS. They worry and lament about issues they cannot control – instead of planning for those they can, says the founder of DBS Financial Group, a general agent with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Fort Lauderdale. Rather than worry, he says, plan. “We tell our clients, ‘There are things you can control and things you can’t control,’” says Schulman, an industry veteran who also serves as president of the MassMutual General Agents Executive Committee and is a member of the Million Dollar Round Table. “If you have your financial house in order, and over the long haul you’ve done some sound financial planning for yourself and your family, that’s what you can control,” he says. “What we see all too often is that instead of making plans, people freeze like a deer in the headlights. If the deer freezes it is going to die, but if it goes forward or turns back, it will be fine.” Across South Florida, executives with professional service and technology firms, retailers, auto dealers and banks are seeing bright tidings on the horizon. To be sure, the recession was the most challenging many have seen in their careers, and most are cautious in their optimism. But a focus on core business principals, client or customer service, and long hours invested in innovation has positioned many for success in the years ahead. For his part, Schulman helps assuage any “deer in the headlights” fear by addressing his client’s worries. People remain more concerned, as he put it, “about a return of their money rather than a return on their money. That plays into our strong suit of what our firm specializes in and our products. That’s why we had a strong year.”

TEKPARTNERS of doing more with less. The business has installed numerous solar arrays to improve environmental efficiency and cost savings. A new sub-company, JM Custom Creations, customizes new cars and customers’ existing vehicles. An LS 460, for example, is “wrapped” in an allchrome wrap. Combining its product and marketing, that LS 460 has 9,600 “Likes” on Facebook. In fact, the company’s social media plan has delivered 23,000 Friends for JM Lexus – the most of any Lexus dealer in the world, he says. The company is the world’s largest Lexus dealer – with a 300 car lead on the next largest dealer. It was the belief of Jim Moran, the company’s founder who died in 2007: Be the best and the biggest. “We have that in our DNA,” Dunn says, calling his team’s performance nothing less than “an amazing job.” “I’m happy to say we are rapidly moving away from [the recession] and we are back in the expansion mode,” Dunn says. “I believe we are solidly in recovery.” Looking forward, Dunn sees continued recovery. Some 10 percent growth should result in 5,500 cars sales by year-end 2013 – with the pre-owned business continuing at “dramatically” increased levels, he says. His prediction for two years out? “I believe in 2015 we will return to prerecession level,” Dunn says. FROM EMPLOYEES TO CONSULTANTS Selling cars during an economic slump can be challenging. Providing professional and recruiting services to the information technology and communications community – which itself struggled during the recession – can be a sink-or-swim test. Harris Katz chose to swim. Along with co-CEO Vito Scutero, Katz is uniquely suited to look at lessons learned in 2012 – and sense optimism for the year ahead. In fact, the company – which has 100 employees in five offices in Virginia, North Carolina and its Coral Springs headquarters – never slowed. Last year was “a huge year for us,” Katz says. The company tallied more than $65 in revenue

“If you look at Weston, there are no houses for sale there. As soon as they come on the market, they are snapped up.The same holds true for commercial real estate prices. They are not bottoming out. So it is a much-improved environment.”

VITO SCUTERO & HARRIS KATZ in what was its 10th year in business. “Every year we beat the previous year,” he says. How? By building and nurturing relationships with candidates and clients alike. In his recruiting business, Katz works with and lends career advice to high-level professionals who sometimes have few other sounding boards. “Who do they talk to about their careers?” Katz asks. He then answers his own question: “Their spouse or best friend, and if someone has earned the right, maybe their recruiter.” To be sure, with a decade under their belt, Katz and Scutero have felt the effects of recession before. Back in 2002, companies were letting go of their internal workforce to survive; 2009 was a repeat. The duo looked in the mirror and said, “OK, this is how the company got formed. We can’t let go of our key asset: our associates,” he recalls. The two devised a strategy called “dash for cash.” They told everyone in the company: If we build revenue by just $1 over the previous year, everyone – from the receptionist to the top recruiter – would get $1,000. “And we did it,” he says. By the third quarter 2009, business had returned. It helped that companies weren’t hiring employees, but they were hiring consultants. TekPartners gained market share from its competitors.

BANKING ON A RECOVERY Bruce Kier wears no rose-colored shades when he views the South Florida economy. Sure, the founder, president and CEO of Community Bank of Broward and veteran banker who traces his career

COMMUNITY BANK OF FLORIDA

“I always say 2009 was the gamechanger for us,” he recalls. Though he’s “100 percent concerned” about rising taxes, Katz is a realist who views that as “yesterday’s news.” And since he already provides healthcare to his associates, Katz is undeterred by others’ fears of the “Obamacare.” In fact, the healthcare sector could be a prime growth market for the company. Growth is the operative word. They plan to have 150 associates by yearend 2013 – and to top $150 million in revenue within the next three years. “Even though the cost of doing business is going up, I believe the opportunities are going up. We’re never complacent,” he says. “I definitely feel we are in a good spot.” Like Katz with TekPartners, Schulman remains concerned about taxes. The consensus is they will be going up, he says, “but the question is which taxes.” Regardless of what the tax bracket is, a fair number of his clients would be affected. Yet he’s also bullish on South Florida’s unique qualities. He’s planning to open a Miami-Dade County office later in 2013, which will dovetail well with his clients’ needs – and origins, Schulman says. Most have money – and need secure investment vehicles. The local dynamic – with real estate improving, tourism growing and strong Latin American markets offering options – makes for “a stronger economy in South Florida,” he says. It’s also changing the regional investment landscape. “More and more individuals in Latin America look to Broward County if they are looking for a second home, as opposed to solely in Miami-Dade,” he says. “The border between Miami-Dade and Broward is an artificial border. We have so many people who live in Broward and work in Miami and live in Miami and work in Broward. If Latin America is strong, it helps Miami-Dade and it helps Broward as well.”

At the same time, housing has become more affordable – that is, if there are any houses to be bought. “If you look at Weston, there are no houses for sale there. As soon as they come on the market, they are snapped up,” he says. “The same holds true for commercial real estate prices. They are not bottoming out. So it is a much-improved environment.” Broward’s unemployment rate is down and falling. Yet, negative population growth had cast a pall – if slight – on any recovery. “Our economy is based on population growth,” he admits. “Our economy was always better than the rest of the country because we have more people moving to Florida, so it stands to reason you needed more restaurants, more banks, et cetera. That stopped for two or three years. But we are back into a population growth now. That’s critical.” LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | JANUARY 2013

GERRY GREENSPOON LEGALLY GROWING As Gerry Greenspoon reflects on his law firm – Greenspoon Marder – and how it endured the recession, he admits to being busier than ever. Though not for the reasons some may think. The firm acquired the venerable-yet-bankrupt law firm Ruden McClosky in a $7.8 million deal that industry publication Dow Jones Bankruptcy Review called “the first known sale of a still-operating law firm under Chapter 11.” With operations sustained and lawyers and support staff retained, Greenspoon enters 2013, “extremely optimistic. “We see a very bright year even as we still struggle through the current economics,” says Greenspoon, whom The Wall Street Journal called “an innovator in the legal profession.” Like Greenspoon, Dunn, Katz and Schulman, Kier is optimistic for the year ahead. All the barometric measures – property values, job and population growth, even increased tourism and trade with the expansion of the Panama Canal – all are the ingredients of an improved economy. “Remember, Florida got into the recession before the rest of the nation,” he says, “and it stands to reason we

GREENSPOON MARDER will get out of it sooner.” From JM Family to TekPartners to many South Florida businesses, giving back is part of the mission. The JM Family name is attached to numerous buildings, organizations and causes throughout Broward County and the region. At TekPartners, contributions to the community are a core value, says Katz, who was raised in South Florida and attended Taravella High School in Coral Springs. “We believe strongly in the adage, ‘To those much is given, much is expected,’” Schulman says. The company sponsors the annual MS Gala & Fashion Show. He’s the treasurer of Jewish Family Services. The company supports the Jewish Federation of Broward County and they had 90 angels on the Salvation Army Angel Tree. “We expect employees to give back in one way or another.” For his part, Greenspoon and partner Michael Marder have set their firm’s sights on continued growth – and a focused philanthropic commitment. The Greenspoon Marder Foundation will raise funds for charitable causes specifically within Florida. If, as Schulman says, those who have should give, Greenspoon agrees. “We feel it’s our obligation – and our pleasure – to give back,” he says.

COVENANT HOUSE KIDS TAKE A BOW

Night of Broadway Stars… A Sparkling Fundraiser For Covenant House BY KEVIN LANE

“C

ompetition is getting keener…are you?” That popular sales maxim is as potent today as it ever was. And it’s as relevant to the nonprofit sector as it is to the for-profit business world. There’s a lot of competition for funding charitable organizations, and while Covenant House of Florida might not have been guided by that saying, they certainly have embraced it in creating their highly successful signature fundraiser, “Night of Broadway Stars.” And what a night it promises to be! The one-of-a kind event takes place on Friday, Feb. 8, starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. high-energy musical production created by renowned lyricist and performer Neil Berg. Showcasing some of Broadway’s best performers, guests will be captivated with treasured classics from Evita, Les Miserables, Dream Girls, Beauty, the Beast, Jersey Boys, and others. The show also will include a compelling performance by Covenant House Florida residents. To end the evening on a highnote, there will be a post-show dessert and champagne reception with the Broadway talent and Covenant House kids in the Peck Courtyard “We’ve heard over and over again that this is the best fundraiser of the season,” enthused James M. Gress, Covenant House Florida’s Executive Director. “With the unbelievable talent of the performers combined with the passion of our Covenant House Florida residents, we have to agree.” The Marquee Sponsor this year is Accenture USA, thanks to Jan Vrins, Senior Executive of the company. Vrins was introduced to Covenant House Florida at the 2011 “Night of Broadway Stars.” He not only experienced the excitement of the live Broadway show, but through resident testimonials, he also glimpsed the challenges and often-painful upbringing of the teens and young adults housed at the Covenant House shelter. He decided to make a difference by approaching his company to support the organization.

“We can’t thank Jan enough for Accenture’s support,” Gress said. “We recognize that individuals who care bring corporate sponsorships to the table. Jan made the effort and, as a result, will make a huge difference in the lives of the youth we serve.” “The principles of corporate social responsibility are fundamental to Accenture’s character and the way we run our business,” said Vrins, who recently was asked to join the Covenant House Florida board of directors. “Accenture and our people work to make a sustainable, measurable difference to the communities in which we work and live. And our support of Covenant House Florida reflects that commitment.” Berg, a Broadway veteran, is the composer/lyricist of the hit Off-Broadway musical “The Prince and the Pauper,” which ran for two years at the Lambs Theater in New York City. He also is the composer for the musical “Grumpy Old Men,” based on the Warner Brothers movie classic starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Berg was introduced to Covenant House and its efforts on behalf of runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth at the organization’s New Jersey facility. He was so deeply moved he developed and launched the “Night of Broadway Stars” fundraiser, which now takes place at multiple Covenant House sites across the nation. In South Florida, Covenant House opened in Fort Lauderdale in 1985 and expanded to Orlando in 1995. Last year, the organization reached more than 200 teens a day via street outreach, crisis shelters, transitional housing projects, and walk-in services, making it one of the largest private agencies serving runaway and homeless youth in the state of Florida.

understanding of the Free Enterprise System,” the organization has a remarkable history. It was founded in 1919 by Theodore Vail, president of American Telephone & Telegraph; Horace Moses, president of Strathmore Paper Co.; and Senator Murray Crane of Massachusetts. Their first program, called The Company Program, was offered to high school students on an after-school basis. In 1975, the organization entered the classroom with the introduction of Project Business for the middle grades. In the last 25 years, Junior Achievement has gradually expanded its activities and broadened its scope to encompass an ever-widening student population. Junior Achievement of South Florida was founded locally in 1959 by the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club and served just 373 high school students during its first year. Programs now span grades K-12, with age-appropriate curricula designed to teach elementary students about their roles as individuals, workers, and consumers and to prepare middle grade and high school students for key economic and workforce issues they will face. Junior Achievement programs reached 48,000 Broward and South Palm Beach County students during the 2011-2012 school year. Thanks to the support of some remarkable philanthropists, all of whom

The Levinsons A partnership in life and business

MARK AND ROBIN LEVINSON

BY MICHAEL KORETZKY

E

xactly 30 years ago, Robin and Mark Levinson decided to get married and go into business for themselves. It was a scary time. For about four hours. “We were broke,” Robin says flatly. “We were just starting out, and it was pretty daunting.” In 1983, Robin and Mark opened a tiny booth – just four display cases – in a now-defunct jewelry exchange in Plantation. But even then they were thinking big. “We put all our savings into this one necklace,” Robin says. “And it sold the first day for $3,500. In fact, it was the very first sale we had. We flipped out! That’s how it all began.” And here’s where it’s taken them so far: Levinson Jewelers has its headquarters on Las Olas Boulevard and a list of celebrity customers that most famously includes record-setting quarterback Dan Marino (who they later hired as a spokesman – yes, he was a customer first). And the man who bought that first necklace? He’s still a customer himself. Dr. Paul Berger is a periodontist in Key Largo who practiced for 40 years in Plantation. When he walked into that jewelry exchange 30 years ago, there were many booths to choose from. “There were a lot of choices,” Dr. Berger recalls. “But Robin and Mark were very special people, and they had this one piece of jewelry that was very nice. So I said, “Here’s my credit card’ – but they didn’t have a credit card machine yet!” Undaunted, Dr. Berger told them he’d return in a few hours. “I could tell they were thinking, ‘Sure he will.’ But I came back that same day with a check.” And Dr. Berger keeps coming back. “I still go there. I got my wife’s wedding band there,” he says. “I trust Robin with helping me choose things, so that’s where we go.” Robin is Levinson’s secret weapon, says John D’Amico,

the company’s vice president of operations. “We call her the psychic jeweler,” he says proudly – although when he says it in front of Robin, she gets a little embarrassed. 888 E. Las Olas Blvd. Mark Levinson agrees. He says Fort Lauderdale, FL the success of both the business 33301 and the marriage is a simple (954) 462-8880 principle: “We do different things, levinsonjewelers.com but we talk about everything.” So Mark, whose background was in buying loose stones, runs the behind-the-scenes nitty gritty. And Robin is “out front.” Or as D’Amico puts it, “Robin is hands on with everything in every case. She’s great with the customers.” Why? Because she thinks of herself as a jewelry consultant rather than a jewelry saleswoman. “We’re very honest with people,” she says. “If I don’t think it helps the customer, I won’t try to sell them a piece.” Robin is also known for telling customers what not to buy. Sometimes the best jewelry for a particular style is less expensive, less flashy. “I just have this innate feeling,” Robin says half proudly and half sheepishly. Because of the split duties in the same store – Mark in the back, Robin up front – the couple says both their business and their marriage have thrived. “We’re good in different areas,” he says, adding that this extends beyond just the store. For instance, he loves golf while she loves kayaking. Robin says she stinks at golf. Mark, when asked about kayaking, simply makes a face. But there’s one thing they always do together. “We don’t take separate vacations,” Mark says firmly. “We enjoy each other’s company.” And that’s why, D’Amico muses, the Levinsons business and marriage can continue to grow for the next 30 years.

IN THE WINTER OF 2005, RIXYS HELD HER THEN 8-YEAR-OLD SON DEVIN. NOW 15, HE’S HAD 40 SURGERIES IN HIS LIFE.

Smiles and Sorrow

One longtime South Florida fundraiser has helped others for a lifetime, fueled by heartbreak in her own life BY RYAN CORTES

Rixys Alfonso is walking into the headquarters of Badia Spices, a local company known for its seasonings and oils. Just a few feet from the entrance of the door sits her white Cadillac CTS. License plate: RIXYS. Now in charge of marketing for the Dan Marino Foundation, Rixys partnered with owner Jose “Pepe” Badia in September to raise money for autism research and awareness. In the past, Badia has funded programs for Marino’s charity, which has raised $37 million in 20 years for autism. He’s known Rixys since meeting her at Here’s Help, a local rehabilitation center for teens addicted to drugs – where Badia paid for a kitchen and culinary school to be built. For the last three months, 5 percent of each one-liter bottle of extra virgin olive oil that Badia’s company sold has gone to Marino’s foundation. In 2011, Badia said his company brought in about $80 million. In Deceber 2012, they were at $92 million. The bottles sold for the autism campaign have reached 48 countries, according to Scott DeNight, the national sales director for the spice company. Rixys is here today with Badia to show off the facility to media members – to raise more awareness about the cause before the latest campaign ends. By the afternoon, Badia will reveal that “at least” six figures have been raised for the autism campaign. That’ll make Rixys happy. But she wants no credit for it. At Badia’s headquarters, the focus isn’t on her. She won’t let it be. “He’s one of those individuals who’s just wholeheartedly good and helps everyone,” she says about Badia. Ten minutes later: “Pepe has touched so many lives through the culinary arts.” She’ll politely interrupt Badia shortly after that, feeling that he isn’t giving himself enough credit. “We’ve never asked Pepe for support where he’s turned us down,” she says. “He’s just very generous, he wants to help.” After another story about a young man at Here’s Help, Badia and Rixys have the following exchange: Badia: “I had people here that were with me for 28 years that used to do this stuff with me. Marvin. You met him. Oh my god, his sister has the boy that you’ve helped.” Rixys: “That you have helped” Badia: “No, you. You.” Badia isn’t the only one who has spent time refocusing who exactly deserves the credit for all that have been

helped through Rixys. “She works hard, she has all these achievements,” her mother-in-law Carmen will say later. “But she has no conceit about it. Deep down, she doesn’t know how good she is.” THE SON WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO DIE IN A DAY When Rixys was 26, her son Devin was born. No one knew it until that moment, but he had Sprengel’s Deformity, a condition that made one shoulder blade sit higher than the other. He was also missing a kidney. And one of his lungs didn’t work – the other was so tiny, it was hard to spot. He had six ribs on his left side fused together and was missing eight vertebrates in his spine. Doctors said he wouldn’t live through the night. He would, but not before being doubted over and over again, with his mom’s persistence and patience remedies for any doctor’s prognosis. When he was 3, Devin was diagnosed terminally ill. “I told the doctor I wasn’t accepting that,” Rixys says. They told her about a doctor in Texas named Robert Campbell that might be able to change that. But it would cost $8,500. PR campaign and raise money. Then she did that. Her story made The Miami Herald. She stood outside local radio and TV studios waiting for the on-air personalities to walk to their cars, as she held a copy of The Herald article and told them one chilling sentence: “My son’s going to die, can you help me?” It wasn’t the first time she was in tears. Or last. A CHILD IN CUBA It all started on a Sunday in 1980. Living in Havana with mom and dad, 8-year-old Rixys was on the way to see her grandparents. Every Sunday, the family would take three different bus trips – it was cheaper that way – to spend all day with them. Her father had a craving to always know what was going on in the United States, so he’d take his transistor radio to get updates and help pass time on the ride. What crackled into his ears that day changed their lives. Two ambulance drivers drove straight into the Peruvian Embassy in Havana that day. Citizens stormed the fences, protesting the regime. Dad turned to mom: “This is our chance,” he said. “My dad was 300-percent anti-Castro,” Rixys says. She grew up listening to The Beatles and Elvis Presley, the lure of America making its way throughout the house with every tune. Before the couple got married, Dad made sure Mom was clear about what he believed: I’m going to leave this country one day. NOW WAS THE TIME. The family went home and packed its bags. A family friend drove them to the Embassy in a 1957 Buick. When they arrived, two burly men yanked down on the fence and lifted Rixys and her mom over it while her proud father pushed his way over the top. For nine days, the family was among 10,000 Cubans covered in dirt and desperation. “It was like a movie,” Rixys says. “People were killed, babies were born, and people were being greedy about space. There was a mango tree, and all the mangos were green. By the third day, there were no mangos.” Throughout the nine days, an ominous message repeatedly blared over the loudspeakers: “A moment of silence. Someone just died.” “My whole worry, the whole time I was in the embassy, wasn’t me dying. It was midterms in school,” Rixys recalls. “My dad kept telling me, ‘we’re going to the U.S., you don’t need to worry about that.’”

“My son is going to die, can you help me?” After nine days, the family’s prayers – and those of the thousands of other Cubans there – were answered. The result was the Mariel boatlift, with 125,000 Cubans fleeing to the United States before the two governments ended the agreement six months later. Rixys’s father died in 2009, and she regrets never telling him what she really felt the day her family piled onto a boat and found a new life. “When the boat pulled off Mariel, the women and children were put in a cabin. My dad came and got me and stood me up on the rail of the boat so I could see Cuba from afar. Tears were rolling out of my eyes. My dad looks up and says, ‘You don’t have to cry, we’re going to the U.S.’” “I wasn’t crying because I was scared,” she says. “I was crying because I knew I was never going to see that place again. I knew that was never coming back.” And she hasn’t. Her friend of

RIXYS AND ALEX SPENT ONE NIGHT IN 2006 AT THE PARKLAND HOME OF FORMER NFL PLAYER RON PORTER AND HIS WIFE.

IN 1976, RIXYS CELEBRATED HER FRIEND AIMEE LOPEZ SANCHEZ’S FOURTH BIRTHDAY IN LITTLE HABANA.

20 years, Nathalie Rodriguez, the morning host from 93.9 WMIA-FM in Miami, has seen the result: “She is the poster child for when you think life is going to knock you down and life isn’t fair, look at her and what she’s been through and everything is possible.” SAVING DEVIN So to Rixys, losing Devin wasn’t an option. After camping out in radio parking lots, Rixys raised $26,000 in four days for Devin. But it didn’t cover half of what she needed. The surgery in Texas was going to cost upwards of $100,000. At the time, she was a receptionist for John “Footy” Cross, a fixture in South Florida radio since the 1970s. He was floored after finding out how much she’d raised, and he asked her to be his personal assistant. Then he introduced her to congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The State of Florida had labeled the surgery as experimental instead of investigational, which meant

the patient had to cover the cost. Rixys called Wasserman Schultz and pleaded. “This was such a poignant story,” Wasserman Schultz recalls. “One that seemed so unfair, so random – and an example of how sometimes stupid government rules are an obstacle to the survival of a human being. I just saw no point in the refusal, and I wasn’t going to take no for an answer.” With Wasserman Schultz’s help, Rixys found a loophole, changing the status to investigational. Devin would have the live-saving surgery. “I know she credits me with saving Devin’s life,” Wasserman Schultz says, “but her determination, her fierce determination that there was no way Devin wasn’t going to survive, was what brought her to me, and I’m just glad I was able to be his champion.” The 15-year-old Devin credits both his mom and Wasserman Schultz for being alive. He tells other kids that he’s used to the surgeries by now. Doesn’t hurt as much. He often soothes Rixys. “I always tell her to calm down and relax,” Devin says. “I know everything’s going to be fine.” But how? “Because. I’ve been through so much and I know already.” Rixys has a second son now (3-year-old Gary) and a new husband (Alex) who met Rixys seven years ago on Match. com. “We just work really well together as a couple,” Alex says. “I’m proud of everything she does.” A few months ago, Latina Style Magazine named Rixys a “2012 Hispanic Woman of Distinction.” Two years ago, former Gov. Charlie Crist appointed her to the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council. She landed her job with Marino after impressing the former quarterback. But the accolades and awards are just window-dressing. From afar, she’s successful and powerful. Generous. A role-model. To her? A potential failure. “I’ve always been able to fix everything in life. I haven’t been able to fix Devin, and I think that’s why I question myself,” Rixys says. “Am I doing a good enough job because I can’t fix him?” She’ll ask him, frequently, “Am I a good mom?” Her son still needs surgery every time he grows, about every six months. She still doubts. There will be nights when Rixys races to the bedroom to see if her son is still alive. No, not Devin. Her healthy 3-year-old Gary. It’s what this life has done her. “I deal with it every day,” Rixys says. “I get depressed. I cry in the shower. Never cry in front of [Devin]. I always teach my son that there’s no crying in baseball. My son will always tell you, even now when he whines about something, ‘Yeah, I know, there’s no crying in baseball.’ Baseball is like life. You play hard, and you get rewards. I couldn’t teach my kid to feel sorry for himself.” It’s not the last time she’ll be in tears wondering where life is about to take her. But the tears will be wiped away. South Florida will be better for it. So will others. “She’s done what others mothers couldn’t,” Devin says. “She’s the best mother in the world.”

PR ADVICE FROM A PRO If you ever need to speak to the media, handle a crisis, or promote your products, Cindy Schutt offers this advice… 1. Be honest. “Especially in a crisis situation, tell the whole truth. Any kind of lie or variation of the truth will come back to bite you and make you look bad. If you don’t know the answer, just say, ‘I don’t know and I’ll get back to you.’ Follow through.” 2. Be brief. “Keep it short, especially on TV. Speak in sound bites, short sentences, so that you can easily be edited, so a print reporter can get what you’re saying. Even in press releases or emails, don’t dance around. ‘Here are the facts, what do you think?’ Period.” 3. Be helpful. “We have a tendency to think, ‘What’s in it for me?’ A reporter has a job to do, and if you can make it easy as possible for them you’ll end up with results and perhaps a long-time relationship. Think through what they need from you – it’s OK to ask.” 4. Be direct. “Remember to tell your story. An interview is two-way communication. It’s not just about what the reporter’s questions are. You add a transition, say ‘and what I want to add is,’ or ‘what I want to make sure you understand is this.’”

USING TRADITIONAL AND SOCIAL MEDIA TO BOOST YOUR BUSINESS IN 2013 JULIE TALENFELD

Boardroom Communications

1776 N Pine Island Road Suite 320 Fort Lauderdale, FL 33322 954.370.8999 www.BoardroomPR.com Finding and keeping clients is getting trickier because we’re in a media transition phase: newspapers, radio and TV reach lots of people, but their impact is dwindling as more people go online to seek out products and services. Here are my tips on how to make the most of your public relations, marketing and advertising dollars in 2013: 1. TAP INTO SOCIAL TV. People now use two screens to watch TV at home. On the flat-screen they watch “Homeland,” and on a tablet or smart phone they text and post their feelings about the show. Join the conversation or start one of your own through social media including Facebook and Twitter. 2. TURN BUYERS INTO SELLERS. Post information online about your products and services in a way that’s easy to for people to pass along to others. Encourage your customers via surveys and transaction follow-ups to share their opinions on sites ranging

62

from Angie’s List to Yahoo Local. Recommendations will boost sales. 3. THINK SMALL (SCREEN). Adjust your website, emails and ads to fit on the screens of smart phones and tablets. You’ll get noticed by all those drivers and pedestrians who are traveling with their heads down instead of paying attention to where they are going. 4. WEAR A WHITE HAT. More and more, consumers are spending their money with companies based on the good works they do in the community. Identify your charities in all public relations, marketing materials and print ads. Post pictures of your charity events and activities on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram; display photos of your good deeds in your lobby. 5. BE PENNY-WISE. Put more time and money into building your reputation and generating sales leads. The beauty of online marketing is that you can lead customers directly to your website, telephone or email in-box. 6. SPONSOR CONTENT. People with DVRs fastforward past TV ads. Take some of that ad money and pay for a print or online “news feature” about your products, services and people. People are more

JANUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

likely to engage in a story -- and therefore your business -- than a 30-second sales pitch. 7. MARRY OLD AND NEW. While the online world is growing fast, Black Friday is still bigger than Cyber Monday. Be consistent in marketing and sales in traditional and online media. Make sure your messages are the same or closely reinforce each other. 8. GET PERSONAL. In this world of “Press 1 for account balance,” customers value human contact even more. Write personalized notes of thanks; meet sales prospects in person instead of online. And have a human being answer the company phone; that will surprise and impress people into doing business with you. “Boardroom Communications, This is Jessica!” Happy New Year – may it be a good year for YOU and for YOUR BUSINESS.

MONEY IN THE NEW YEAR; A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO KEEP THE START OF THE NEW YEAR ALWAYS BRINGS THE RETURN OF RESOLUTIONS AND THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO LOOK AT YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE. While many people focus on physical health and wellness in the New Year, now is a good time to think about the wellness of your finances. Currently, consumer debt is at an all-time high and many people are still paying off their credit cards from the 2011 holiday season. We all know that accumulating December debt is a bad way to end the year. In the back of our minds, we know our stress will be worse in January when we must face a stack of bills on our doorstep. Just like a diet or a new exercise plan, a financial New Year plan takes dedication and a commitment to do the work needed. No matter what your financial situation is one of the best resolutions you can make is to save more money and be more diligent with your finances. It starts by creating a budget that works with your current financial situation. Examine your month-tomonth expenses and see where you can cut back. A great place to see how you are doing with your budget is PowerWallet.com. PowerWallet.com can evaluate your expenses and create a budget that fits your needs once you input your information. The site allows you to see how much you can save by cutting back on a certain category and can pull up all your bills and statements at just the click of a button. PowerWallet lets you track all of your invoices

from different banks and financial institutions and helps you organize so you will never pay a late fee again. PowerWallet has a feature where they alert you when a bill needs to be paid, if you have a low balance, or if there is any strange activity on your account. The other feature that I really like is the deals and coupons for places you already shop or eat at. By analyzing the stores you visit most often, they give you deals that you’ll actually use. The next step is to take a look at your credit situation and figure out your debt-to-income ratio. As a rule of thumb, your total installment debt (e.g., credit cards, auto loans, student loans) shouldn’t exceed 20 percent of your annual takehome pay. One challenge that stops many people from building savings is credit card debt. It is difficult to set money aside for the future when you have debt facing you now. If you have multiple credit card debts, pay off the credit card with the highest interest rate first then move on to the next highest and so on, until you have paid everything off. While you work to pay off your credit card debt, avoid using credit as much as possible so you’re not adding to the burden you are trying to reduce. Once you’ve paid off your credit cards, you can simply take the extra money each month and put it into savings.

HOWARD S. DVORKIN, CPA Consolidated Credit Counseling 5701 West Sunrise Boulevard Fort Lauderdale, FL 33313 1-800-435-0389 www.consolidatedcredit.org

If the debt you have is too large and you will see another New Year before you have it paid off, it may be time to start thinking about debt relief options. Do your research carefully to decide which debt solution is right for you. You may need to negotiate with your creditors for lower interest rates and payments, consolidate your debt with a secured or unsecured personal loan, or enroll in a debt management program with a legitimate credit counseling agency. Consolidated Credit Counseling Services’ certified counselors can help review your budget and make additional cuts to your expenses so you can build a better savings plan. This service is performed free of charge and it is a very worthwhile investment of your time. You can receive help at www. ConsolidatedCredit.org or by calling 1-800-SAVE-ME2 (1-800728-3632). LEARNING TO LEARN BEYOND TUTORING KATIA MORITZ, PH.D. ABPP Licensed Psychologist Board Certified in Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology www.nbiweston.com www.academic-options.com Phone: 954. 217.1757 / 954.843.9251

Schoolwork had never come easily to 12-year-old Lynn. Trying to keep up academically meant days filled with tutors, homework help, and hours of her parents’ time reviewing and preparing for tests. Lynn’s success was measured by whether or not she was able to “get by” – and even that required continuous support. School had, undeniably, become a major source of stress for Lynn’s entire family. Lynn and her family are not alone. Academic struggles are a stressful part of many families’ lives. Even for students who need moderate amounts of support, being an independent student seems a far away dream. From the super-involved to the hands-off parent, the common goal is to help their children develop to their full potential – whatever that may mean in each case. So why wasn’t Lynn able to reach her academic goals? For many children, help reviewing their work is all they need, but others require more – they need to learn how to learn. Innate for some, but not to most of us, academic learning is a skill that can be taught, improved and eventually mastered. Learning the value of learning, and believe it or not – studying, can be

64

a game changer instead of a patch maker. Making lasting positive changes requires team effort. Begin at home with these simple tips: FOCUS ON EFFORT VERSUS GRADES. Create confidence in your child by shifting focus from grades to emphasizing effort. Inevitably, better grades are the result of better effort. Even though teachers control the grades, we can control how much effort we put forth. CLUE IN TO CONTEXT. Think of academics as just one aspect of the child’s personal development, and teach him/her to enjoy the rewards of learning in general. This can eventually lead to content mastery, followed by improvement in grades. RESIST THE SHORTCUTS. Successful schoolwork performance is strongly connected with executive functioning abilities (planning, organizing, prioritizing, etc.). Helping children to develop their ability to plan, organize, and prioritize (instead of relying on the typically easier solution of doing something for them), will ultimately help them to become more independent. YOUR CHILD’S NEEDS ARE UNIQUE. Students fail to thrive for many reasons. Learning differences are a common explanation, but a diagnosis such as ADHD, OCD, anxiety, Asperger’s/ASD, LD, or dyslexia may be in play. Even life stressors such as

JANUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

parental divorce, illness and bullying can affect learning processes. LEARNING CAN BE FUN. Children spend countless hours attempting to master video game levels, learning complex lyrics from songs and memorizing dance moves. Can we use this same approach to their schoolwork? Specific Educational Interventions can help remediate many learning deficits. Helping Lynn to succeed required much more than content tutoring. It required a full understanding of the issues affecting her learning, the development of effective strategies to remediate her difficulties, and teaching Lynn how to use her strengths to overcome her weaknesses. Today, Lynn sees herself as a very good and independent student, and school is a place where she learns and enjoys herself. Thasos

Food, Atmosphere, Service and Music… Thasos Greek Taverna offers the whole package and brings a little bit of Greece to Ft. Lauderdale BY SHANNON MARIE TARRANT

Green Chickpeas 1 10 oz bag of green garbanzo beans (Whole Foods 365) ½ cup extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup water 4 Tbsp. fresh-squeezed lemon juice 2 large cloves garlic salt & pepper

A

s you drive down East Oakland Park Boulevard, you cannot miss this new Ft. Lauderdale hot-spot. Thasos Greek Taverna has a very different style that sets it apart from its surroundings. With the look of a uniquely lit, authentic Greek villa, this restaurant is as beautiful and inviting on the outside as it is on the inside. Owners Sophia Mylona and Kostas “GUS” Leontarakis have thought of every detail when putting this restaurant together bringing in Greek designers from Angelos Angelopoulos Associates to create a beautiful dining space that makes for a wonderful

gathering spot. From the moment you walk through the doors of Thasos Taverna, you will feel immediately at home. The staff and the surroundings give you a sense of being at a huge family gathering where you are the guest of honor. We decided to start our night out at the bar, to sample some of their specialty drinks and appetizers. Like the rest of the interior, the bar area is decorated in all white with clean lines and modern décor. Thasos did their homework when it came to designing their specialty drinks menu and brought in a mixologist from South Beach to concoct what can only be described as some of the best drinks you will ever try. Our bartender, Kelvin, not only made each one to perfection, but was also very personable and took the time to explain what each drink consisted of and the origins of all of the ingredients. Some of our favorites were the Ananithos, made of spring 44 gin, falernum, lemon, pineapple and dill, and the Greek Side Car which consists of metaxa 7 star (a Greek brandy), cointreau and lemon. Thasos also offers a large, well-selected wine

Blanch chickpeas in boiling salt water until tender but still green. Place garlic in food processor with half of the extra virgin olive oil and process. Add garbanzo beans, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper and process, alternating with water until you achieve a light, fluffy consistency. Do not over-process. Garnish with Garlic Confit recipe to follow: 10 cloves of garlic Place cloves in a small saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil then discard water and repeat this step five times adding cold water each time. After you chill the garlic, thinly slice the cloves and shallow fry in olive oil at 300 degrees until golden. Be careful not to brown. Drain oil and season garlic with salt and pepper.

list that features Greek options in addition to many others from around the world. The Greek Spreads section of the menu has many tempting options. We were drawn to all of them and therefore decided on the Piatelaa selection of various spreads including Whipped Feta, Eggplant, Taramosalata, Tzatziki and Green Chick Peas- all served with delicious, toasted bread. As we tasted our way through all of them, each spread was more flavorful and delicious than the last. For the shared plates, we tried the Shrimp Saganaki, the Grilled Octopus and the Keftedes. The Shrimp Saganki was perfectly flamebroiled with roasted tomato and a scrumptious feta cheese. The FireGrilled Octopus was remarkable and is an ideal choice for adventurous palates. The Keftedes (grilled lamb meatballs) were served with a delicious whipped yogurt. The wonderful combination of flavors and textures satisfied our taste buds completely, so much so that we had to order more. For dinner, we chose to sit outside on their beautiful, enclosed patio. This semi-outdoor space was a perfect setting for a wonderful meal

on a beautiful night. Their menu features classic Greek entrees with influences from both the Thasos region of Greece and the owners’ own family styles and recipes. Using only the finest and freshest ingredients, these dishes come to life as a wonderful combination of Greek spirit with a modern twist. We highly recommend their perfectly grilled Lamb Chops that practically melt in your mouth and are served with crunchy fingerling potatoes or, their Day Boat Swordfish- grilled and served with caramelized root vegetables and capers. Another one of our favorites is the Moussaka (lamb & eggplant casserole)perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. The Brussel Sprouts, yes brussel sprouts, were a fabulous side dish. Prepared with house-cured pork belly, Thasos honey, and lemonif ever there was a time to eat your brussel sprouts, this is it. We finished off the evening with some of their freshly prepared desserts and fantastic Illy Coffee. The flourless chocolate torte is dense, decadent and rich. Thasos makes an amazing Greek Yogurt with fresh berry sauce that is creamy, tart and refreshing. The standout dessert of the night though, was their

Baklava. Flakey, buttery and made with almonds, it was pure joy to eat. Our dining experience surpassed our expectations on every level. Thasos is a hip yet comfortable dining experience that you do not want to miss. AND

another thing...

WHAT DO HORESHOES AND CURSIVE HAVE IN COMMON? BY BRUCE TURKEL

Your kids can’t tell time. Don’t believe me? Wait until you’re in a room with an analog clock and a teenager or twenty-something. Tell them they can’t look at their phones and then ask the time. Point to the analog clock dial if you have to. They can probably figure it out by counting out where the little and big hands are, but they can’t just glance at the clock and know the time like you and I can. Your kids can’t read or write cursive handwriting, either. A few years ago, I left a note for my kids – and they ignored it. When I asked why, it turned out that they couldn’t read it. Seems they never learned script in school. And it’s not going to change anytime soon. Did you know that 45 states are considering incorporating a national educational curriculum for 2014 that doesn’t include teaching cursive handwriting at all? Indiana, Illinois, and Hawaii are leaving it optional for their school districts to decide. Utah is still debating the issue. Only California, Georgia, and Massachusetts have legislated mandatory cursive writing instruction. You know what else your kids can’t do? They can’t sew. Their idea of darning socks would be tossing ripped hose in the trash and saying “darn!” Except they probably don’t know what the word “darn” means. Your kids can’t talk on the phone, either. Give a kid a phone without buttons to text on and they hardly know what to do with it. It’s not like this hasn’t happened before, by the way. How many older people do you know who still shoe horses? How many still know how to can their own fruits and vegetables? How many can knit? How many can crochet? These, too, are activities that were once commonplace but have been superseded by the relentless march of technology. Whether the loss of these skills is ultimately negative is a bigger conversation than we have time to discuss here. But it’s worth considering the unintended consequences of the cost of technology – especially if you’re in the business of selling goods or services to groups who are soon going to be comprised of these new consumers. In a recent Smithsonian article, Talking Heads frontman David Byrne writes about these consequences: “Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould and biologist Richard Lewontin wrote a paper in 1979 claiming that some of our skills and abilities might be like spandrels — the architectural negative spaces above the curve of

82

JANUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

the arches of buildings — details that weren’t originally designed as autonomous entities, but that came into being as a result of other, more practical elements around them.” So let’s talk marketing and branding. How do you intend to sell products to these spandrels, these people who think differently than you and I? Not printing your headlines in a script typeface is an obvious answer but much more remedial than I’m thinking. What if you were a watch manufacturer? How are you going to sell timepieces to people who can’t tell time or who are perfectly happy checking the time on the smartphone that never leaves their hands? How about if you were a pen maker? How are you going to sell a pen to someone who doesn’t know how to write? These unintended consequences are outcome agnostic — they create both assets and liabilities. The trick is to try and spot them early and then look for the opportunities they provide. Whether it’s writing games for Facebook users, building charging stations for electric vehicle drivers or becoming a privacy and security consultant for Internet users, the spandrels that technological advances will continue to create are the future. Even if they can’t tell what time it is.

NeoGraft Hair Replacement System NO Cutting / NO Sutures, Micro-Follicular RelocationSM If you’re a man or a woman prematurely losing your hair, Shino Bay Cosmetic Dermatology Plastic Surgery & Laser Institute is proud to announce our newest cosmetic procedure the NO-cutting / NO-suture follicle relocation procedure that’s called the:

NeoGraft Hair Replacement System NO Strip-Cutting or Sutures, Micro-Follicular Relocation SM

This revolutionary new piece of technology allows us to isolate and relocate each healthy follical, one at a time, from one location to another, without the need of a scalpel, a line incision or sutures. And there is NO linear scar. This procedure is the least invasive procedure of its kind. Large areas can be done in a single, in-office session. Your recovery time will be “next day,” of any surgical option. NO MORE itching, scratching or redness. Healing time is almost 80% faster than previous prcedures. And, this NeoGraft procedure reduces the need for additional procedures as the viability of each follicle is dramatically increased. By individually relocating hair follicles that are genetically programmed to always grow, we can give you back your youthful head of hair and even make it thicker than ever! Implemented by Dr. Lisa J. Learn, our Chief of Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery - Board Certified Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, with over 11 years of high volume, award-winning cosmetic and reconstructive work, Dr. Learn brings her extraordinary talents to our team at Shino Bay.
