Many exciting events have been taking place over the past few weeks and “Manning coming to the Miami Dolphins” has been top on the list. We’ll have to see how that plays out. Still, as the philanthropic season marks its end, new experiences will commence. This month indicates the beginning of springtime. The rains will fall and everything will begin to bloom. It seems nature knows exactly what she is doing when it comes to life, even though we sometimes try to divert what is about to happen with our own plans. Things change, time moves and hurt passes, but the one thing which remains constant is life will go on. Elton John put it to words and song, saying, “In the circle of life it’s the wheel of fortune, it’s the leap of faith, it’s the band of hope, till we find our place on the path unwinding in the circle, the circle of life.” As in years past, many communities will be holding ceremonies and Relay’s for Life. This American Cancer Society fundraising effort brings together survivors, patients and memories of fights well fought. Like many, I know or knew family and friends with this terrible disease, so I participate, contributing my time and resources to the successful efforts of the organizers. But this year takes on a whole new meaning. Recently my mother underwent a procedure to remove a lump and more was uncovered. Now, we are discussing the options about future protocols. She is in relatively good health and high spirits. The qualities

APRIL 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

resonating from her are of optimism and gratitude. In her mid-seventies, and a widow for more than ten years, she has a calm reassurance about her knowing we all will face our time. Mom always taught me that life will bring you opportunities and obstacles. I’ve come to understand that it’s not what you face which reveals ones true self, but how you face it. You have to make each day count and leave behind a better place for future generations. So, I encourage you to participate in some way in making our city a better place, in your own way, and thus completing the circle. Many of us will also celebrate our respective High Holidays – Easter and Passover. These holidays

commemorate a rebirth of spiritual proportion. I wish all my family and friends the happiest of holidays. So, as you move into the month ahead and as you try to find your way on the path, I urge you to make each day count and to follow the words of Ghandi, “Be the Change You Want to See in the World!” As Always, Enjoy the Lifestyle ™ Jim Norton President & Publisher Lifestyle, Publications

WHAT’S HOT, WHAT’S NOT IN FOOD

But while the venerable brand has never gone out of style, it seems that it has extra special buzz in 2012. Why? Maybe, because Henri Bendel specializes in fashionable accessories, cosmetics, jewelry, footwear, fragrances and more attracting a rabid following of female sophisticates. If you can’t visit the flagship store in Manhattan (a landmark), visit www.henribendel.com to find a location near you. So why is Henri Bendel hot? Maybe it’s the signature black and white colors of its handbags and beauty cases, or maybe it’s because trendsetters like Rachel Bilson and Abigail Breslin have been spotted wearing Henri Bendel around Hollywood.

You don’t have to love country or folk music to love The Civil Wars. You just have to love good music. Take it from us, The Civil Wars are about to break. The group, fresh off winning two Grammy’s, is composed of singer-songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White. They’ve already appeared on

Since the 1890s, stylish women the world over have been seen wearing Henri Bendel accessories.

FOOD

HENRI BENDEL

Foodies are predicting the rise of gluten free fare and retro foods and the fall of cupcakes and popup restaurants. While we are not ready to write off the cupcake, we do think the gluten free movement has legs. An estimated 10 percent of the population has some sort of gluten sensitivity—giving restaurants a chance to cash in by serving this growing niche. As for retro fare, start looking for the tried and true to reappear on your menus: meatloaf, fried chicken, hot dogs and fruit pies are making their way from the diner to a wider variety of restaurants. Maybe it’s the times, maybe it’s the nostalgia—but there’s something to be said for bringing back meatloaf. This food just makes you smile. Another trend worth watching is the growth of “communal restaurant tables.” Whether you’re a party of six or a table for one, it doesn’t matter. When upscale restaurants offer communal tables there is room for everyone. Shy diners may have to adjust to sharing a meal next to strangers, but social folks will appreciate the opportunity to meet new people over a memorable meal. Watch for this European trend to grow in the United States in 2012 and beyond.

26th Annual Zimmerman MS Bike Ride ON APRIL 21 AND 22, 2012, AN ESTIMATED 2,500 CYCLISTS WILL MAKE THE TWO-DAY, 150-MILE JOURNEY FROM THE MAROONE START/FINISH VILLAGE AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY TO THE VILLAGE AT JOHN PENNEKAMP STATE PARK IN KEY LARGO AND BACK. The MS Bike Ride is Florida’s premier and most exciting charity cycling event, raising money to support research, programs and services to 6,000 South Floridians affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). Last year’s ride raised nearly $1.8 million through corporate sponsorships and fundraising efforts of the cyclists, volunteers and donors. “The Zimmerman MS Bike Ride Presented by Mack Cycle and Fitness is an event to remember with festivities and entertainment which attract thousands of cycling enthusiasts,” said Karen Dresbach, National MS Society, South Florida Chapter President. “It is truly inspiring to see each rider become motivated to cycle hundreds of miles to support the cause.” Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. It interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be

predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving closer to a world free of MS. The ride takes off from HomesteadMiami Speedway on April 21st at 7:00 AM, with a lap around the track NASCAR style, then stops overnight at John Pennekamp Park in Key Largo. Once all riders arrive at the park, they will celebrate in a festivallike atmosphere with food, fun and entertainment. Riders can either camp for free at the park or make hotel accommodations. After a good night’s sleep and hearty breakfast, the riders will return to the Speedway

on April 22nd for the finale where dedicated volunteers will cheer them across the finish line and present medals. Rest stops will be available every 4 – 9 miles with food, drinks, first aid, bike repair, fun themes and more. This year, Emmy Award-nominated host Phil Keoghan will be riding with the Mack Cycle and Fitness team. Keoghan is the producer and host of the popular reality competition show The Amazing Race. Children and families are also invited to participate in a Kids and Family Ride on April 21st at 9:00 AM. There is a $15 fundraising minimum for kids 12 and under plus free registration, $50 minimum for teens ages 13 – 17, $150 minimum for adults 18 and older all with a $20 registration fee. Bella’s Group Hosts Free Party ON APRIL 22ND, FROM NOON TO 2:00PM BELLA’S GROUP AND HEALTHY MOTHERS HEALTHY BABIES WILL HOST A FREE PARTY AT MANORS BOWLING LANES. “Bella’s group is unique among non-profits in that it was started by two grade school girls and it has continued to thrive and grow... a testimony to the power of an idea and the enthusiasm of these young girls,” according to Cynthia Peterson, Executive Vice President of the Broward County Medical Association (BCMA). She was referring to Gabriella and Isabella Glazer who started the support group when they couldn’t find one that dealt with their circumstances… The girls were being raised by their grandparents, Drs. Ira and Marietta Glazer. In the spirit of their ‘mission to organize fun parties throughout the year,’ Gabriella and Isabella are teaming with Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies to host a party at Manors Bowling Lanes on Sunday, April 22nd from Noon to 2:00 p.m. “These free parties are fun for the children… and it also offers the family

members raising them an opportunity to share and receive support while the children are playing,” Isabella

“WE HOSTED BELLA’S GROUP ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO… THEY HAD A TERRIFIC TURNOUT AND EVERYONE SEEMED TO HAVE A GREAT TIME.” said. An estimated 35,000 children in Broward County are being raised by family members that are not their parents. Marietta and Ira adopted their two grandchildren after a lengthy, complex and costly process. “We hosted Bella’s Group about two years ago… they had a terrific turnout and everyone seemed to have a great time,” said Dwight Matlack, owner of Manor Lane Bowling at 1517 N.E. 26th Street in Wilton Manors.

“We look forward to having them bowl with us as the centerpiece for their April party.” Manor Lane boasts 20 state-of-the-art synthetic-surface bowling lanes, a fresh food snack bar and a game room filled with arcade games for the young at heart. In order to fund these free parties, Gabriella and Isabella have become adept at organizing fundraisers. A case in point was the recent “Intimate Evening with Laura Duksta,” speaker, visionary and best selling author of I Love You More and You Are a Gift to the World. Held at the prestigious New River Fine Art at 914 East Las Olas, guests were dazzled by the works of Domenech, Vilanova, and M.D. Rubio. “We raised more than a $1,500.00, thanks to the donations guests made, a percentage of Laura’s book sales and gift certificates from Zola Keller and Elite Travel,” Isabella added. Guests are encouraged to bring canned food for the Pantry of Broward. Visit www.foreverfamily. net/BellasGroup.html or call 1 (888) 365-FAMILY. Stomach Cancer, the Foundation of Debbie’s Dream. Dr. Brian Udell of Child Development Center of America, is our Outstanding Father of the Year, Cynthia Peterson, Broward County Medical Association is a Lifetime Legacy recipient and Twan and Lysandra Russell of the Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, will be recognized as our 2012 Guardian Angels. This group of men and women represent a wide cross section of the community, but all of them have a common bond in making a difference in the lives of children and the betterment of Broward County. This 20th Anniversary Luncheon reminds us of how much Broward County has grown, has supported non-profit endeavors and continues to thrive as a caring community. Each year in Broward County more than 300 babies don’t make it to their first birthday. Nearly 2,000 babies are born to teenage mothers, and thousands of babies in Broward

County are born with low birth weight and with little or no prenatal care. Broward County studies show that forty percent of these deaths could have been prevented. In an effort to help the Broward community change those statistics and provide a change for future generations, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies of Broward goes out directly to the communities that are at highest risk and provides programs and services. HMHB of Broward is a 501(3)c organization whose mission is to reduce infant deaths by providing resources and education to pregnant women, parents, and their families. Since 1987, HMHB of Broward County has provided access to prenatal and postnatal care, education, resources, advocacy and public awareness for Broward’s families. Our programs include The Fatherhood Mentorship Program, Cribs for Kids, Healthy Families, The Mahogany Program, the Forget Me Not , The Fetal Infant Mortality Review and the Teen Collaborative Program. All HMHB programs provide support to aid in the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

he biggest names in non-profit graced the red carpet on Friday, February 24th for the 2nd Annual BankAtlantic NonProfit Academy Awards. This A-list soiree is the single most prestigious event in Broward County that recognizes leaders and organizations for excellence in the non-profit sector. “The BankAtlantic Non-Profit Academy Awards presented by 2-1-1 Broward and hosted by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is unique. It celebrates and honors the achievements and inspiring work of Broward’s outstanding nonprofit leaders and agencies,” said Jarett Levan, President & CEO, BankAtlantic. 2-1-1 Broward, the only agency in the county that provides 24/7 comprehensive helpline services to any Broward resident seeking emotional support, crisis/suicide intervention, information, needs assessment and referrals to health and human services agencies, brought the star-studded 2nd Annual BankAtlantic Non-Profit Academy Awards to a sell-out crowd of more than 625 guests. “The Non-Profit Academy Awards was created to bring the non-profits to the forefront and offer a day that is just for them and gives them the opportunity to shine,” said Gregory Haile, 2-1-1 Broward board chair and VP of Government and Regulatory Affairs at Broward College. The Non-Profit Academy Award frenzy kicked off on January 24th when the three nominees in each of the seven categories were announced at the chic VIP Announcement Party, presented by Broward Health at the extravagant estate of Steve Savor and catered by Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza. The competition was fierce with 97 outstanding non-profit leaders and organizations in the field, but this year’s judges spent countless hours selecting the top contenders. The main event, with all the famous images of the real Academy Awards – golden statues, red carpets, paparazzi and headliner entertainment, was held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. “The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is a proud supporter of 2-1-1 Broward and appreciates the concept of this spectacular event – to honor the work of so many non-profits,” said event co-chair, Susan Renneisen, Director of Special Events, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Susan’s

co-chairs were Jen Klaassens, Wasie Foundation and Marcia Barry-Smith, BankAtlantic. The Red Carpet Reception sponsored by Memorial Healthcare Systems, set the tone for the event with explosions of conversation, pure excitement and live gold statues. The reception had all the makings of a Hollywood gala, including champagne compliments of Premier Beverages, offered to guests by a golden goddess sponsored by BB&T. Paparazzi was out in full force catching guests posing at the Red Carpet Media Runway sponsored by Consolidated Credit Counseling. Guests were then treated to a surprise performance by Cirque Dreams, POP GOES THE ROCK, the event’s Headline Entertainment Sponsor. WSVN’s Deco Drive Co-Host and event emcee Lynn Martinez delivered a witty monologue. Lynn’s Cleopatra-style entrance was befitting of the fun-loving Deco Drive Diva. The anticipation soared as representatives of McGladrey, the official accounting firm of this year’s Awards, delivered the sealed envelopes

Each winner received an Academy Award statue and $1,000 for their non-profit organization. All other nominees were awarded $500 each. NANCY WERTER-WINN A CHAMPION FOR CANCER RESEARCH

THERE’S A CERTAIN KIND OF SPIRITED WOMAN WHO CAN ENTER A ROOM AND CHANGE THE DYNAMICS. A BORN LEADER WHO CHAMPIONS THE MISSION SHE MOST BELIEVES IN WITH A NO-NONSENSE ATTITUDE, AN UNWAVERING DISCIPLINE AND A SPARKLE THAT WHEN OTHERS EXPERIENCE IT…IS MAGNETIC.

40

APRIL 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

Nancy Werter-Winn exemplifies the kind of sparkle that changes a room. 13 years ago she was charged with beginning and driving the fundraising for The Pap Corps Cancer Research Valencia Lakes Chapter in her community. She became president of the chapter two years later. In 2005, she was elected to the Pap Executive Board as vice president of Pap Friends of Sylvester. She currently serves as Co-VP New Chapter Advisory which is instrumental in helping other chapters begin. She also serves as chairperson of Pap Friends and Founders which raises donations from $10,000 and above. Nancy’s 25 years at The Miami Herald gained her an enviable reputation as a take charge business woman. Her dynamic personality has been an integral part of helping The Pap Corps volunteers raise funds over the years. Her creative nature has assisted chapters in raising additional funds. With no executive salaries, she and the other 21,000 men and women volunteers have donated more than $29 million for cancer research in the last 10 years. These funds support research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, South Florida’s only university-based cancer center – breakthrough research dedicated to finding cures for all types of cancers that affect men, women and children. There are more than 50 chapters located in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami Dade counties all working for the same vision – To Imagine – and help create – a World without Cancer. “One of the most difficult things about learning you have cancer is feeling good about the next steps you take. Who do I call? Where do I go for treatment? It’s so personal. You need a positive attitude and it’s a scary time. One of the most unique benefits of being a Pap Corps Member is The Physician Referral Program” states Nancy. “There are patient advocates who

will try to expedite your access to UHealth physicians. These advocates will do their best to get you an appointment in a timely manner.” The Pap Corps offers many ways for contributors to support its mission. There’s even a high school program. West Boca High School Club of the Pap Corps was the first high school to become involved. This is the prototype that will be followed by other high schools choosing to open a Pap Corps Club. Ashley Rocque, whose grandmother Faith Book is president of Boca West Chapter, volunteered to open a Pap Chapter in her school. Ashley, along with approximately 35 students, and still growing, formed the Club. The Club is a wonderful way for teens to learn the meaning of “giving back” to the community while earning community service credits for their college resumes. Joining The Pap Corp is not only about fundraising for the mission. Members develop long lasting friendships; they are able to bring their own skills and be part of something that they create in their own communities. “This year is the 60th birthday of The Pap Corps. PINE CREST SCHOOL PRESIDENT DR. DANA MARKHAM A RICH BLEND OF TRADITION AND INNOVATION Pine Crest School’s fifth President Dr. Dana Markham brings a dynamic blend of tradition and innovation to one of South Florida’s oldest independent private schools. While some school leaders must navigate a steep learning curve to interpret a school’s culture and climate, Markham took the helm doing what she has done for more than 23 years - greeting students, families and faculty with academic expertise and sincerity. Markham, who has served years as a teacher, middle school head, and academic dean, received the medallion of office in a formal investiture ceremony at Pine Crest’s Fort Lauderdale campus in mid-March. The celebration, which took place on Pine Crest’s new state-of-theart Upper School campus, underscored her vision to prepare students to become leaders of the future, to learn collaboratively, and to create solutions when no answer is readily available. “From an early age, our students learn how to interpret challenges that may be ahead, how to adapt to those challenges, and how to collaboratively communicate the next step,” said Markham. “Pine Crest students learn to think critically and quickly, and to draw upon ideas from different disciplines.” Markham said children of families who invest in a Pine Crest education will receive rigorous academic instruction, as well as comprehensive athletics and fine arts programs for which the 78-year-old school always has been known. From the moment new students enter their classroom, parents realize that the value of a Pine Crest education is defined by the combination of traditional excellence and innovative approaches to learning that go “beyond the book.” Markham’s vision is apparent in her expectations for faculty to incorporate technology education, cultural sophistication and leadership in all grades. In the fall of 2011, students as young as four and five began to use iPads during academic instruction, fifth graders have designed business expos, and Upper School students have gone beyond their AP courses to present scientific research findings to medical doctors and university professors. Markham said she is always pleased to invite families to visit Pine Crest’s Boca Raton campus which serves grades

pre-K – 8; and Fort Lauderdale campus, which serves grades pre-K -12, to experience first-hand the value of a Pine Crest education. “I have watched and worked with generations of parents and their children, many starting out as exuberant fouryear-olds who leave us as confident, college-bound young adults” said Markham. “A Pine Crest education creates opportunities for our students to learn a very different skill set from those of prior generations. Every unique facet of our school community and climate encourages our students to become outstanding citizens equipped to thrive in this 21st century world.”

YOUR PET CAN STAR IN A NEW BOOK LISA HARTMAN PUTS THE FUN IN FUNDRAISING Dog Trainer and Author Lisa Hartman is no stranger to helping animals, and her new book is no exception. Best known as a Dog Trainer and Pet Expert in South Florida and “The Hamptons”, New York, she is also an Author (“DIAL A DYNAMITE DOG: The Ultimate Field Guide for Training Your Pet”), and an accomplished pet photographer with her work appearing in many pet publications and pet products. She is regularly seen on television and in magazines giving pet advice, and has worked and volunteered for many rescue organizations here and in New York as well. With her soon to be released “Hampton Dogs” and now “Florida Companions” she decided to marry all of her talents and put the fun in FUNdraising. “It will also be “raising” awareness to specific issues facing Florida pets and the work of animal advocacy groups here” Lisa says of her new book. “From dog rescues to therapy dogs, dock diving and canine frisbee, there are plenty of ways your pet can make a difference and have a better quality of life in Florida. Some people are still not aware that you can adopt a purebred dog. I have two gorgeous purebreds, a Dalmatian and a Chinese Crested. They have both appeared on magazine and book covers and create quite a stir walking down the street. I am still amazed that people don’t believe I rescued them. But I think all animals are beautiful, and fully believe great companions are made, not born, whether purebred or a mixed breed.” Like Hampton Dogs, Florida Companions is a beautiful, full color coffee table book that people can have their pets participate in, and have their stories told. “What’s more, nobody would throw away a book featuring their animal, so the mission of these advocacy groups will always be at pet owners fingertips, and the pictures and stories of pets enjoying life in Florida even if from humble beginnings is priceless.” Here’s how it works: For $700.00 your pet receives a photo shoot in the Southeast Florida location of your choice, a full page photograph in Florida Companions with their profile or rescue story, and you receive a copy of the book. Pets do not have to be rescues but proceeds from the book as well as fundraising events benefit local animal organizations. For more information on having your pet included please contact Lisa Hartman at Lisa@LisaTheDogTrainer.com, www.LisaTheDogTrainer.com!

R U Hot? In Any Room of Your Home... Time For A Mitsubishi Ductless Mini Split

AIR AROUND THE CLOCK

A/C & APPLIANCE SERVICE

Mr. Lang, I don’t normally write letters to companies about their products but I feel compelled to share my experience with the Mitsubishi Split-Type Air Conditioner that you installed for me about 6 months ago. I love it! The Mitsubishi Mr. Slim is the perfect unit for my bedroom; I can super-cool the room in minutes with incredibly flexible airflow direction and fan speed. Also, I can make adjustments from my bedside with the handy remote any time of night or day. Did I mention how quiet the system is? It’s truly impressive! Now the real reason for writing: my allergies have almost disappeared! After living in Florida for 40 years, I was resigned to the fact that my breathing would never be free and clear with all the molds and fungi our climate produces. Well, about a month ago, I realized I could breathe effortlessly through my nose. How can this be? Then it dawned on me, it’s the anti-allergy enzyme filter that I read about in the manual.

FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES... ICONTROL FERRARI Owning a Ferrari is probably every guy’s dream and that dream stays with us the rest of our lives. Unfortunately, for just about 99% of us, that dream remains a dream. So while we may never get to own a real Ferrari, that doesn’t mean we can’t own a remote controlled one. The iControl Ferrari is a 1:50th scale replica of the exotic Ferrari Enzo supercar that the “99%” of us can afford. The iControl Ferrari Enzo RC car doesn’t work like a traditional radio controlled car; instead of using a remote control, it relies on a “dongle” that plugs into an iPhone, iPod, or an iPad. Download the free App and when you start the car up, your phone will make an engine starting sound. The App will display a picture of a steering wheel and you steer the RC Ferrari by tilting the phone left and right, just like a real car’s steering wheel. We’ve tried and it is very cool. Is it the real thing? No. But, it will have to do—for now anyway. Cost: $39.50 (taxes and tags included). . For retailers, search the web for iControl Ferrari.

4

FOR THE TENNIS PLAYER... NIKE ZOOM VAPOR 9 TOUR Do you want to play tennis like Roger Federer? Ok, that’s probably not feasible. Do you want to look like Roger Federer? Ok, that’s not realistic either. But you can wear his tennis shoes. Developed in collaboration with Fed, the Vapor 9 features a finger-like system on the outside that works to mold the top of the shoe to the shape of your foot. That means comfort. We don’t guarantee a better backhand. Cost: $130. Visit Nike.com for more information.

7 FOR THE KID THAT CAN’T GET UP... TOCKY If you have a teenager you know the drill. It’s a fight every morning to get them up for school. Enter “Tocky” the runaway alarm clock; which will jump off your nightstand and roll away forcing you to get out of bed and chase it down. Tocky has a microphone so that you can record your own sounds or wake up calls. You can even program mom’s voice and save her the trouble of yelling every morning. If you’re a kinder and gentler parent you can also upload your favorite music, but you still have to get out of bed when Tocky jumps. Or you can upload your favorite songs and listen while Tocky rolls around your room. Either way, Tocky rocks. Cost: $69. For retailers, search the web for Tocky.

5

FOR YOUR IPHONE... MATERIAL 6 WOOD IPHONE BACKS 52.4 million of us bought iPhones over the Christmas holidays. Now it’s time to personalize our devices for the spring. Made from pure aluminum and hand-finished to match the iPad almost perfectly, it uses brutally strong neodymium magnets to attach securely to your iPad 2, holding it at a perfect viewing angle while hiding almost completely out of sight. Catalonia CAPTIVATED BY

S

pain is the land of romance, history, diverse culture and amazing oddities. From bullfights to Gaudi to dancing the night away on Ibiza, travelers could easily spend a year exploring beautiful cultural Spain. Recently SitInMySeats VIP Tickets & Travel took 30 VIP clients on a private tour to see everything from lush, green forests and mountain ranges, through to endless arid plains and long, sandy beaches. Spain, absolutely amazing! Laura Hildenbrandt, Director of Travel Sales & Marketing has traveled extensively during the past two decades but rates Catalonia at the very top of her list of places to put on your bucket list. According to Laura, “spending a few days in this amazing seaside region of Spain is only the “tip of the iceberg.” The capital of Catalonia is Barcelona, a coastal city oozing with charm. From the moment you take the first breath of Barcelona air, you are captivated by the mystery. The very old, the very traditional, the very new, and the very eclectic collide to make the city itself a fiesta for your senses! The glistening Mediterranean Sea laps against the coast of this amazing city keeping a constant “on a tropical holiday feel” even as you’re hustling down a busy street. Barcelona embodies all of the interesting little oddities of Spain with ancient streets perfect for people watching. If architecture is your thing, Barcelona is a gem. Antoni Gaudi lived and worked in Barcelona. Gaudi is best known for his drip like architecture. His distinctive and highly individual style can best be seen in his still

un-completed masterpiece, Sagrada Familia, the church he was unable to finish before his death. Started in 1882, construction continues to this very day. His strange work will make you stare with wonder! While the city is constantly being modernized, Barcelona retains its historic charm and flavor. You will fall in love with Ciutat Vella, “old city” that lies at the heart of Barcelona. You will see signs of Roman architectural structures and walls as you take a step back in time in the most popular meeting point in all of Catalonia.

As most travelers know, the best way to get to know the culture of any place is to eat your way through it. This is especially true in Barcelona, the epicenter of Catalonia. Perhaps it’s because Catalan food is such a good reflection of the culture. The cuisine is simultaneously sophisticated and unpretentious, much like the Catalans themselves. A favorite of Laura Hildenbrandt’s was the pan con tomate, bread rubbed with tomato, garlic and olive oil. In Laura’s words, “Delicioso! No matter how hard I try I just cannot duplicate the recipe! I miss Catalonia more and more each day!” Offering luxurious accommodations, eclectic and charming people, unbelievable cuisine, and a climate that beckons you to stay, Barcelona will delight and surprise even the most seasoned world traveler. Keep in mind, however, that it will be very, very hard to leave once you are “Captivated by Catalonia!” For your next vacation to this or any other worldwide destination, please call Lisa or Laura at SitInMySeats VIP Tickets & Travel - 1-866-798-7328.

BRANDING FOR ALL

BY: DAVE KUSTIN

Be authentic. Say something different from your competitors. Disrupt categories. Be clever, simple, and memorable. Make it easy for customers to tell their friends. Get them to wear it, auction it, trade it, and collect it. Make them name a pet after it. Travel, lie, and bleed, save, cry, and stay up all night for it. These are the feelings and behaviors that people will happily engage in if they LOVE your brand. But how, you ask, do you get a segment of the masses to be loyalists? You must have strong beliefs and you have to communicate them with the goal of finding others that share in those same beliefs. This is Marketing 101. BUT THIS THE REALM OF BIG OTS OF MONEY BRANDS WITH LOTS YOU SAY? Hardly. While it’s true that big brands usually have lots of money to distribute e their message, theyy must still engage in n the fundamentals. And this is what hat always separates the good from the great reat in nearly all aspectss of life, not just branding. ding. Take sports for instance. ance. On the most basic level, the fundamentals entals of any particular sport must be mastered before advancing onto the e next level where you are re free to create. Think about some small businesses sses you might know and how ow they advertise, or what their message is, or how their corporate identity (logo) is presented. Then, think about some

of the top brands in the market and look at those same things. Often, they are worlds apart in terms of quality, conciseness, and effectiveness in meeting their strategy, if the small business even has one at all. It’s like Pee Wee League versus Major League. But here is the point. Big or small, all businesses can engage in and master the fundamentals. They are linear; they build upon each other and are essential if you want to occupy a portion of hearts and minds. THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP IS HAVING A STRATEGY. Just having pretty pictures and funny words isn’t enough, having a positioning strategy is key. What segment of the market are you targeting? Is there

currently a category leader? If so, how will your message be different from theirs? What is your pricing strategy? Do you plan on being the premium

priced brand or the cheap Charlie? Is your product or service targeted to men or women or both? These considerations, and more, must be addressed at the outset as this strategy will be your north star in everythin that follows. everything Leonar Leonardo DaVinci said, “Simplic is the ultimate “Simplicity form of sophistication.” e This edict should be gu your guiding light when design designing corporate identit collateral, and identity, advert advertising. Sometimes visual visually complex, overly desig designed elements are required, but the human brain is real only able to really rem remember simple vis visuals so keeping it sim simple is ideal. Your m message, which sshould be born fr from your brand’s b beliefs, will also benefit from simplicity, but above all, be mem memorable. Branding is not an overnight activity, rather, an ever-evolving activ activity that requires time, imagination and creativity. If you want people to really LOVE your brand, you have to work at it.

CONSEQUENCES OF FAD DIETS YO-YO DIETING MESSES UP YOUR METABOLISM.

DR. KENNETH WOLINER Board Certified Family Physician

9325 Glades Road, Suite 104 Boca Raton, FL 33434 561-620-7779 holisticfamilymed.com

“WHEN I HEARD you had a cancellation, I rearranged my schedule so I could come in today.” Wendy was obviously excited about seeing me. “Thank you for fitting me in.” “I spend over 80 minutes with each new patient, so I have to limit the number of new patients I see each week; otherwise, there wouldn’t be any time to take care of my established patients.” “Dr. Woliner, I understand completely. I just want to get better.” “Tell me more.” “Ever since high school, I’ve been on one diet or another. Up until the last five years or so, I was always able to drop 20-30 pounds no problem [1].” “But?” “But I’d always gain it back, and now, even when I starve myself, I can’t lose an ounce!”

“Yo-yo dieting messes up your metabolism. 65% of the weight lost is just water and muscle [2]. Not only do crash dieters lose their hair, get gallstones, and gain their weight back within a year, they increase their cortisol levels so much that makes it hard to ever lose weight again [3].” I continued, “So what diets have you done?” “What haven’t I done, you mean! Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, of course. Diet clinics prescribed appetite suppressants, laxatives and diuretics [4]. I even did over a dozen of the fad diets that are touted in Women’s World Weekly. Sprinkling Sensa on my food, hCG shots, and diet cookies you buy from the kiosk at the mall. I hate to admit it, but I’m one of the ones that fell for that Kimkins scam.” “Heidi Diaz, a.k.a. Kimberly Drake, had a lot of people fooled with her “after pictures” which were lifted of off ‘Russian Bride’ websites [5]. The trick all these diets use is that starvation itself causes a lack of appetite [6]. ‘SNATT’ is what they call it. Slightly Nauseous All The Time.” “Nausea was only part of my troubles. At 37, my periods stopped early, and my GYN is convinced that all these fad diets had something to do with it. My heart even started skipping a beat – my doc said ‘QTsomething …”

“Prolonged QT interval. That’s serious; some people have died from that [7]. Ironically, the most dangerous time is when you start eating again after prolonged dieting.” “Dr. Woliner, I’m through with all those pill-mill diet clinics. So many of them wouldn’t let me use my drug plan, instead, they forced me to buy overpriced drugs right from their office. I’m coming here because I know how important it is to see a board-certified doctor, one that still goes to the hospital in case I need you.” I finished my exam. “In addition to measuring your metabolic rate, I also want to send a note to your primary care physician, to coordinate care.” Wendy’s metabolic rate was “minus 16%”, indicative of a slow metabolism [8]. Blood tests confirmed CENTRAL HYPOTHYROIDISM (suppressed TSH) INSULIN RESISTANCE (elevated HOMA-IR), and ADRENAL FATIGUE (high cortisol) [9]. I then prescribed a comprehensive plan of behavior changes, diet modification, exercise, supplements, and even some medications [10]. Three months later, she came back to check her progress. “Dr. Woliner, I’m no longer shedding hair in the shower, but better yet, the scale is starting to move. Just this last month, I lost another six pounds!”

All of the dishes were so delicious, we wanted more, but also couldn’t wait to experience what the main courses had to offer. We weren’t sure if we still needed the Grilled Caesar Salad that we had ordered, but once we took the first taste of the fork and knife grilled romaine drizzled with homemade caesar dressing, we were really glad that we had indulged. AND

another thing... THE FUTURE STARTED YESTERDAY BY BRUCE TURKEL

My daughter sent her college applications out a couple of months ago and is waiting for her acceptance letters to arrive in the mail. So far she’s received six green lights and no turndowns so I’m proud to report she’s six for six. She wrote her college application essays about her love of photography and the environment. She talked about taking her camera, nicknamed Nick Canon (it’s a Canon SLR, get it?) on nature hikes and how she’s going to choose her school not just for its academic offering but also for its natural surrounds. Yesterday she texted me a copy of the acceptance letter she received from one of the schools. In the margins of the laser printed form letter an admissions counselor scrawled in longhand, “You and Nick Canon are going to enjoy the scenery at ABC College.” How smart is that? Not only does the customized letter show that someone at ABC College actually read her essay and paid attention, but those 12 words also created all kinds of warm and fuzzies. In an instant, a school that was in the bottom half of her desirability list leapfrogged to the top three. Scientists have been researching why users are so addicted to their smartphones and Blackberries (it’s no surprise they’re called “Crackberries”). What they’ve found is that every little “ding” stimulates a shot of dopamine into the bloodstream of the users. You can almost hear Sally Field exclaim, “You like me. You really like me” every time the phone rings. It’s such a powerful charge that Apple has recently exploited it further with the iPhone 4S’ Siri app. Each time the phone does your bidding and answers affirmatively with your name, it’s a satisfying and fulfilling experience. Social networking sites that send you an email when someone posts your photo. Restaurateurs who bring you a complimentary amuse-boche or after dinner drink. Beautifully designed products that make you smile each time you look at them. Doctors and nurses who take a little extra time to sit and talk with you about your health and your lifestyle. People who use your name when they speak to you. Pets that love you unconditionally. Each of these uncommon

delights gives us a little “Atta boy” or “Atta girl” that reminds us that we matter. Each one makes us feel good about ourselves. Each one makes us want to go back for more. Thanks to computerization and technology, most products we buy are very good at doing what they’re supposed to do. For example, when was the last time you had a television set break? TVs have become so reliable that the industry had to invent entirely new types of TVs — first the flat screen and when those became ubiquitous, 3D TVs — just to keep us buying them. Apple is so good at regularly upgrading their products to create desire that you don’t really buy their goods, you subscribe to them. All of a sudden, a product’s popularity isn’t just measured by its functionality, but by how that product makes us feel about ourselves. If we feel welcomed, pampered, pleased, delighted, we buy. If we feel validated, we buy a lot. I don’t think most people like rats. They can be dirty, dangerous, and destructive. Throughout history the rodents have carried numerous diseases and have been responsible for countless human suffering through plagues and pestilence. Just a glimpse of the rodents’ beady little eyes, gruff gray fur, and scrabbly-skinny tails provokes fear and loathing. According to Wikipedia, “rodents have sharp incisors that they use to gnaw wood, break into food, and bite predators.” And the family of common rodents includes not just rats but mice, porcupines, beavers, guinea pigs, hamsters, and squirrels as well. That means that squirrels and rats are related. So why do people hate rats but think squirrels are cute? It’s the distinct differences between the two that make all the difference. While rats have those nasty, scaly tails, squirrels have broad, fluffy ones. Rats look matted and mangy. Squirrels have thick, luxuriant fur. A park full of squirrels is delightful. A park full of rats? Disgusting! Rats have beady eyes. Squirrels have big, shiny eyes. In fact, the dimensions of a squirrel’s face are similar to that of a human baby. In other words, rats gross us out while squirrels bring out our maternal and paternal instincts and make us feel good about ourselves. And therefore, them. So has evolution crowned squirrels as the original branding gurus? You’ve never heard anyone described as a “dirty squirrel,” have you? How about a “squirrel fink”? No one’s ever “squirreled out a friend,” have they? And when was the last time a bad situation was described as “squirrels deserting a sinking ship”? No, it’s the rats that got the bad rap. And the squirrels — like other savvy creatures, colleges, and companies — get all the peanuts.
