MOMS – WINNING – HEART BALL May is dedicated to extraordinary people and I wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers in our community. Moms are a special group of individuals who deserve our respect and appreciation. I especially extend my gratitude and love to my mom and my wife Candy and wish them a very special Mother’s Day. Everyone gets behind a winner and the sports scene is heating up as the Panthers took to the NHL playoffs for the first time in twelve years last month, the Heat continue their climb to the number one spot in the NBA and the Marlins begin to get into the MLB season in their new ballpark. Hopefully the new Marlins’ Manager has moved past the initial “Castro” gaff and begins to inspire his players on a path as the other professional coaches have with their teams – to be competitive and win. Unfortunately, the other top item in the news has been the Trayvon tragedy. I could never imagine what his parents are going through with the loss of a child under any circumstances, let alone the ones in this incident. I believe peace is something which is not just the absence of conflict, rather the presence of justice. So, I was glad to see action, albeit delayed, being taken to let our legal system work. I was also pleased to see the sports celebrities in our community taking responsibility towards young people and our society as role models. This was evident when the Miami Heat players dawned hoodies and made markings on their uniforms to stand in solidarity with the apparent lack of justice in this case. Now I challenge them, and all well paid athletes, to do the same for everyday people

struggling with other challenges and injustices in life. This is where trust comes in, which has been the hallmark of mothers worldwide. It is the one element you could count on in life. Unlike the betrayal of false friends, a mother’s trust is overwhelming certain. We may all have varying views of the legal system and it may have flaws, however, it is the best we have and one of the best in the world. So, I hope the people trust and allow the system to work. I also urge those in position of authority, professional athletes and those with the financial where-withall to look back at their mother’s conviction as a role model for their everyday actions. And, if they truly believe in justice, prove it as mothers have throughout time – unconditionally and without fail by doing what is right. Lastly, I encourage everyone to
join the American Heart Association & Patriot National Insurance at the Broward Heart Ball - A Red Heart Affair as we celebrate the culmination of the Heart Society campaign on May 5th. A formal, glamorous sixty’s themed night will feature a live performance by Diana Ross. Again, Happy Mother’s Day! As Always, Enjoy the Lifestyle! PETS
Those of us who have pets are very familiar with the guilt we feel when our busy lifestyles take us away from Fido for hours at a time. But we might feel a little bit better about the long hours apart if we knew that our dogs were at home watching TV programs that will enrich their lives. At least that’s the premise behind DOG TV (www.dogtv.com) a new 24-hour channel cable TV channel that aims to keep canines entertained for hours. The channel features special programming developed using research from pet behavior experts. The company has worked with animal behavior researchers over the past few years in order to develop its content, aimed specifically at dogs. According to DOGTV, canines are happier when a television is on and the channel has been tested to ensure it captures a dog’s attention. It will be broadcasting three types of programs — calming sections to reduce animal anxiety, stimulating sections to keep dogs entertained and segments aimed at improving their behavior. The Humane Society of the United States has recognized the channel and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has also accepted its techniques. Check out the website and call your cable provider for information on how to subscribe.

Let’s face it, shopping for razor blades ranks right up there with life’s least favorite activities. First, a good blade is very expensive. Second, when you hit your local Walgreen’s or CVS, the blades tend to be locked away making it inconvenient to purchase. Enter, the Dollar Shave Club. This brilliant idea became a viral sensation on the Internet this spring with its fun launch video which challenged men and women to throw away their razors for a “@*#**$ great shave.” The Club not only promises a quality shaving experience, but it also offers a low price ($1, $6 or $9) per month for blades and convenience (blades are shipped directly to your door) every month. There are three types of blades you can order: The “Humble Twin” for $1 per month plus shipping and handling, the $6 per month “Lover’s Blade” which includes shipping and handling and the “Executive” for $9 per month which includes shipping and handling. All of the blades include aloe strips and the Executive features six stainless steel blades with Vitamin E to protect your skin. Visit www.dollarshaveclub.com for more information and to see a fun video which can be a seminar on how to enter a market in a unique, fun and effective way.

Park, a family festival, and more. The Miami DDA is one of the official Port Sponsors and according to their executive director Alyce Robertson, “… downtown Miami is a natural backdrop for this event. As an international destination with an iconic waterfront setting, the district is already serving as a magnet for tourism and recreation. We are proud to participate.” The Big Blue & You Foundation
will be providing fun and educational experiences for the children who visit the race village on pre-determined dates. The MiamiDade Public Schools and select private schools will help facilitate the organization of local students to visit the site as planned field trips. The main goal will be to inspire participating youth to understand the importance of water (both fresh and salt) in our daily lives and how they can be involved in protecting this precious resource. “We strongly believe that children are the strategic medium to transport new ideas and information about protecting our blue planet to their parents, families and society as a whole,” says Danni Washington, Founder of The Big Blue & You Foundation. “We applaud Volvo Ocean Race Miami’s efforts in proposing this special opportunity for the children in our community.” Groupon will be providing “Groupon Getaways” to their online database including opportunities to purchase tickets to the Gala on May 17th and sailing packages. Voices For Children of Broward County to Host Fundraiser VOICES FOR CHILDREN OF BROWARD COUNTY, A LOCAL NON-PROFIT THAT ASSISTS ABUSED, ABANDONED AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN IN THE COUNTY’S DEPENDENCY SYSTEM, WILL HOST ITS INAUGURAL SOARING FOR CHILDREN FUNDRAISER THE EVENING OF THURSDAY, MAY 10, AT JET RUNWAY CAFÉ IN FORT LAUDERDALE. Voices for Children of Broward County, a local non-profit that assists abused, abandoned and neglected children in the county’s dependency system, will host its inaugural Soaring for Children fundraiser the evening of Thursday, May 10, at Jet Runway Café in Fort Lauderdale. The event will honor a “Voice of Distinction,” Florida State Senator Nan Rich, one of the state’s leading champions of children’s and social justice issues. Senator Rich has extensive experience in advocacy and community service and has worked to improve the lives of women, children and families in her community, the U.S. and Israel. She currently sits on numerous committees including Health and Human Services Appropriations, Vice Chair; and Children, Families, and Elder Affairs. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of KIDS in Distress. “Senator Rich has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of children in our community, and we

want to honor her as one of Voices for Children’s ‘Voices of Distinction’,” said Amy Goldin, President of the Board of Voices for Children of Broward County. “From establishing the Children’s Cabinet to her bill creating the Statewide Guardian ad Litem Office and serving as one of Florida’s first volunteer Guardians ad Litem, Senator Rich has given a voice to countless children who aren’t able to speak for themselves, and, for that, we thank her.” Voices for Children of Broward County was founded in 2011 and raises funds for the Guardian ad Litem program, which trains community
volunteers who work one-on-one with children in the dependency system. The volunteers advise judges on the children’s progress and make recommendations for placements and permanency. The goal of Voices for Children is to ensure every child in the dependency system is assigned a Guardian ad Litem. “Research indicates that children with a Guardian ad Litem volunteer are more likely to find a safe, permanent home, get more help, spend less time in foster care and do better in school,” Goldin added. Soaring for Children is sponsored by Dreams Incorporated; Colodny, Fass, Talenfeld, Karlinsky & Abate; AutoNation; Chrysalis Health; Royal Caribbean; Park One; and Peter and Patricia Walker (as of 3/26/12). The event, which is being planned by the Women’s Voices Auxiliary, co-chaired by Arielle Capuano and Michelle Small, will include live jazz music by Urban Gypsy, as well as a DJ, silent auction, raffle, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Jet Runway Café is located at 5540 NW 21 Terrace at the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. For more information on tickets or Voices for Children of Broward County, visit www.voicesbroward.org.

WESTON’S EXTRAORDINARY here are many outstanding mothers residing in Weston. They participate at school, the regional park and in the community. We highlight several who have extraordinary accomplishments in their chosen profession, philanthropy or public service. These women reflect the diversity of the city in many respects and exemplify what makes this community unique in every way. These mothers are rich in culture, talent and all have a sense of passion for all they

contribute and especially for their family. This Mother’s Day we salute all Weston mothers for their individual and collective contributions to our community. These women mold future generations with exceptional care in an environment which prepares children to deal with challenges the world. They teach, they play and lead by their example. Their legacy in on our community spans beyond their vocation through the wisdom they impart.
ROSALEE MESSA – PHILANTHROPIST
JACKIE ROSEN PHILANTHROPIST Adversity comes to all of us, in one way or another, and we deal with it in life. But the tragedy of losing a child is a whole different subject to deal with by parents. Jackie Rosen, along with her husband, former Mayor Harry Rosen, know these feelings all too well. Still, they have turned their emotions into a passionate drive to help other through their organization - Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention or FISP. Jackie says, “What I do is my passion and I take no salary, so I can prevent other families from the heart break of losing a loved one to suicide. I help both families who have lost a loved one by suicide and those contemplating suicide to heal and get help so they can live meaningful lives again. One of the very special things I do is educate lay people, police, professionals and teens about suicide prevention. I enjoy the interaction with our clients and all those I meet when I present prevention programs. I deal with all people of all age groups. I often hear, “you saved my life. I thought I couldn’t make it through, but you let me know I could.” She hopes to impart on her children, “That they should pursue whatever they have a passion for because that will allow them to succeed. It not only makes them happy but will also contribute to making this a better world. And, to remember the words my mother passed on to me which got me through tough times “THIS TOO SHALL PASS.”
As a mother of seven – five boys and two girls, it would seem improbable for anyone to have time to help advocate on behalf of the arts. But Rosalee Messa is no ordinary mom. She is one who has taken on the challenge of helping to bring students the love of music through her support of the Weston Philharmonic Society. Where the schools have dropped most programs, Rosalee and the Society have picked up the baton to fill the void. When asked why, she says, “We feel it encourages musical enrichment in the schools and local community. Musical programs have dwindled in the schools in recent years and I feel it is an important part of learning for children of all ages. I also feel very strong, as a mother, about the importance for all students to have the same opportunities my children have been lucky enough to have over the years.” Rosalee and her youngest son also assist ChildNet, which helps to protect children who are abused, neglected and abandoned in our community. The one piece of wisdom I hope to impart on my kids is to have faith and believe that God always has a plan that is better than the plan we have for ourselves. Even if things don’t go the way we want them to, God will always watch over you and do what is best.”
CAROLE BURK PHILANTHROPIST Only the second woman to become president of the Rotary Club of Weston, Carole Burk will take the office in July of this year. Carole has held many leadership positions and says she enjoys helping people in their time of need, whether it is listening to their story, or helping them learn to help themselves. “I do not believe in giving to others just for the sake of giving. I believe we give to others so that they may help themselves further their own cause. As the upcoming leader of the Rotary Club, I have big shoes to fill. We have had many tremendous leaders and our club has branched out in so many areas of community service, helping many who are in need and who need a hand up, not a hand out.” “As a mother of one, I hope I have imparted on my son the fact that one is never in the world alone. There are times when you need help and there are times when you need to be the one to provide the help. Be sensitive to others who surround you. You never know what another person has on his emotional plate.” LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | MAY 2012

LINDA GOMEZ – PHILANTHROPIST
MICHELLE YOUNG – PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS WOMAN Michelle Young, a mother of two girls, is also known as the “Country Club Mom” because that is where she spends most of her working hours – at Weston Hills Country Club – as the director of catering. If you have ever attended an affair at the club, you know each and every detail meets the distinct high standards Michelle and her staff put into making each occasion special. Michelle explains what she enjoys most about her career is her ability to be involved in some of the happiest moments of people’s lives. She explains, “Over the course of almost seventeen years at the Country Club I have planned thousands of events, charitable, social, corporate or political - all celebrations - and I get to be a part of them. I get satisfaction from helping my members and clients, many of whom are like an extension of my family, plan the perfect event.” She says she hopes to impart on her children the self motivation to strive to be the best they can be! Michelle teaches them “to be the best you! Never settle for mediocrity.”

This mother of two has been an advocate for Latin Women as the former President of Mujeras Latinas in Weston. Linda Gomez has spent countless hours assisting Hispanic women achieve their goals and dreams through her efforts with this organization. She says she does this because of the outcome. “The power of mentoring is very important and is amazing that, by just volunteering a few hours of my day, I am able to belong to a very special group of people which, somehow, makes a difference in the great evolution of Latin women. I admire women who take on big tasks and are able to follow through all the way to the end without giving up, therefore achieving positive results, not only for themselves but also as they pass it on to other women. We are at a time in life where women are rewriting the direction in which our society is heading and the Latin woman is an intricate part of this Society. As great leaders and great achievers - responsibility is the driving force in everything they do. Hispanic women can be found in all levels of Society in a variety of pivotal roles such as in business, professionals, politicians and as community leaders making a difference in the community without giving up their cultural values. Hispanic women are capable of juggling it all while excelling triumphantly by successfully balancing their personal and professional lives. Being President of Mujeres Latinas IML (Latin Women ELW) for the years 2009 & 2010 was an amazing experience. It empowered me to be an agent of change among women and above all, it was an honor and a privilege to have been given this opportunity - an opportunity to serve our Hispanic community and the community at large. Linda hopes her children have learned they should always be a good person in every capacity of life. She says, “I hope they always look for the good in people, always giving the best of themselves to others, always being good Americans, always putting family first without forgetting others, respecting their elders and never, ever forgetting where they came from - their roots, their values and their culture; which must be passed on to their children.”
JOANNA SHEINBERG PROFESSIONAL & PHILANTHROPIST Always with a smile on her face, Joanna Sheinberg is a mother of five who takes an active role in each of their activities. In her spare time she has built a fitness facility in Weston for athletes from pee-wee’s to the pro’s. She oversees the Ultimate Sports Institute which has grown over the last four years into the go to training resource helping individuals and teams enhance their skills while reducing the potential for injury. In addition, Joanna also shares her personal time and resources to those less fortunate. What she enjoys most about what she does is the priceless look on the children and families faces when you show up at their door or school with new clothes, backpacks, school supplies, or food for the holidays.” It has become a family affair for me. Anything that I do, my children get involved as well. They love helping others and look forward to the yearly events that have become tradition.” Joanna teaches her children that “the best cure or therapy for any situation in life is to reach out and help someone else. There is no better gift or feeling than when you are selfless and give of yourself.”
COMMISSIONER COMMISSIONER TOBY FEUER & MERCEDES HENRIKSSON – PUBLIC SERVANTS “It takes a village to raise a child” and moms like Toby Feuer and Mercedes Henriksson epitomize the true meaning of this philosophy. Each, a mother of one, has dedicated their time to ensure the children of Weston live in a safe, well kept community with recreational facilities and educational opportunities to enhance their future. When Toby moved to Weston she became involved in the community activities and when the opportunity arose for public service, she was elected a City Commissioner. When asked why she does all this, Toby replies, “I can only state that you lead by example. I am guided by a saying that I
read many years ago - Any good that I can do let me do it now, for I might not pass this way again.” She says, “This is the legacy that I would like to leave to my children – Lead by example.” Mercedes expressed what she enjoys most as she concludes her eight years of service is interacting with the residents. “Whether it’s responding to questions, helping to resolve an issue, or simply participating in a community event, each encounter provides me with the opportunity to get to know our residents better and to enhance my knowledge and understanding of our community’s needs and how we may continue to improve the services we provide.” She imparts on her son to “Always treat others as you would like to be treated.” LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | MAY 2012

people LAURA GRAU… WESTON’S SUPER TEEN DETERMINED,COMPASSIONATE & INVOLVED With more energy than the pink ‘Energizer Bunny’, eighteen year old Weston resident Laura Grau is definitely not your ‘typical teenager.’ As if being a senior at American Heritage isn’t all consuming, what with studies, spending time with friends, taking part in family activities, looking after her two birds, Luli and Guigi and Milo the cat… as well as the hundred-and-one things teenagers do… she is immersed in volunteer work. Actually, ‘immersed’ might be an understatement. Laura is the President of the Pre-Medical Society, the President of HOBY Broward, and the President of the Youth Advisory. She’s in the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and National Science Honor society. For the last 4 years she’s been a volunteer at the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale. “I go there almost every day, spending hours working with children suffering from a variety of illnesses, including different forms of cancer,” Laura said. It was through her volunteer work that she met Sandy, a young girl of 11 who had been suffering terribly from the age of 5 with rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of cancer that has a 30% survival rate. “I was only 15 years old when I first met this little warrior, and she taught me how to savor my life. Despite the cancer stealing her childhood, she kept her strength and desire to live.” Over the ensuing years, Laura has made it her mission to “ create moments in which she could live.” Upon learning that her dream was to be a professional baker when she grew up, Laura bought a collection of professional baking supplies, and they spent an amazing day at Laura’s house baking a spectacular “Hello Kitty” cake. Other ‘moments’ include movie nights, pool days, pizza parties, shopping sprees, and even a Black Eyed Peas Concert. Sandy passed away on January 27. “My parents say I was Sandy’s angel. But the truth is that she was an angel to me, as well as a little sister, a teacher, and a close friend.” “My true passion used to be veterinary medicine,” Laura said. “Sandy inspired me to be a Pediatric Oncologist and she’ll live on through all the children that I save.” Laura graduates in May and has been accepted by Vanderbilt and Purdue and is “ waiting to hear back from Harvard.” Stay tuned… you’ll undoubtedly be reading more about this compassionate, determined and amazing young woman!

SETTING THE STAGE
DON’T WEAR SWEATS OR YOUR HUSBAND WILL LEAVE YOU
I
used to love stirrup pants. You know, the pants that had little hooks that went around your feet. I used to love pleated pants. I even used to love pants that actually covered my belly button thereby making my butt look twice as big as it was. But my tastes have changed over the years. Come to think of it, a lot of things have changed over the years. I was a lawyer, and then I was a lawyer and a wife. Then I was a retired lawyer, wife and mother. And now, at almost forty years old, I am a wife, a mother, and a writer. I have loved every stage of my life thus far. Not everything in each stage. I could have lived without a kid peeing in my eye. I could have lived without the endless discussions with other new moms about when their kids sat up, or began eating solids. Good times nonetheless. So for a straight ten years I was at the mom stage. Then, my kids started growing up, started ignoring me, and free time was born. I asked myself what I am sure many other moms around me have asked. Is there something else? What is the next stage? I was out to dinner one evening with another couple when the wife posed one of the most powerful questions I have ever been asked. “If you were guaranteed success, what would you do?” And without hesitation, I knew. I would write a book. A book about us. About moms, about the comedy that is our lives. Our kids, our husbands, our friends, etc. After that dinner, I began to question why I never started writing. Was I that scared? What was going to happen if I started? So I decided to find out, and so I started writing. The result, my book “Don’t Wear Sweats Or Your Husband Will Leave You”, and my blog, dontwearsweats.com. Don’t Wear Sweats was born out of my obsession with
a woman I would run into around town. Every time I saw her, she was wearing sweatpants. I started to obsess. Why doesn’t she want to get dressed? Is she tired? Is she about to take a long flight? Does she have pants that button? Don’t misunderstand. I am not against sweatpants. I am against the lack of effort they sometimes represent. I think for a while, I was going through life in sweats. Everything was good, but I could have been better. I was getting too comfortable and not pushing myself to be the person I knew I wanted to be. Don’t Wear Sweats is a humorous look at the lives of the modern woman. I want the reader to feel like they are talking to a good friend. But a good friend that will tell them when they are doing something wrong. With chapters entitled, Veruka Salt, which discusses spoiling your kids, to Game Set Match, a realistic depiction of the games men and women have to play to maintain a good relationship, this book is not your mother’s advice book. I find my chapter about finding the right style just as important as my chapter about how to deal with the inlaws. But the main message I want readers to take from the book is that they have more control over their lives than they think. Now, I am at a new stage in my life, one that I worked to create. And whether you are just starting out after college, or a young mom, or a woman on the verge of a midlife crisis, the most important thing to know is that you can always change your tastes, your dreams, and definitely, your pants. *Don’t Wear Sweats Or Your Husband Will Leave You will be published this summer and can be purchased on Amazon.com. You can read Jen’s mind now at dontwearsweats.com LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | MAY 2012

WESTON ROTARY - 360 BY CHUCK YEH, PRESIDENT OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF WESTON
THE HIGH COST OF A COLLEGE EDUCATION HAS BECOME MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT EACH YEAR AS DESERVING STUDENTS FIND IT HARDER TO FINANCE WITHOUT HELP. ON THURSDAY, MAY 17TH, FIFTY STUDENTS FROM WESTERN AND CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOLS WILL BE CLOSER TO THEIR GOAL OF RECEIVING A COLLEGE EDUCATION. That morning, at the Rotary Club of Weston’s Scholarship Awards Breakfast, they will each be awarded a scholarship based on their needs, their academic achievement, and their lives of service. Witnessing the expectant faces of our brightest and best heading off to their higher education is a moving experience for families, school administrators, and the Rotarians that have worked hard to see that happen. Scholarship recipients are selected according to aptitude, need, leadership skills, accomplishments, and an interview presentation before the Rotary Scholarship Committee. Last year’s applicants had an average GPA of 4.62 and 506 service hours. All totaled, last year’s applicants represented over 20,000 service hours given back to the community. The Rotary Club of Weston has awarded over a million dollars of scholarships in this way. Funds are raised from events like April’s

WestonLawyers.Com Golf Classic sponsored by the club. 100% of the proceeds from this sold out tournament fund these scholarships for deserving graduates. This was the 25th year for the golf tournament held at the Weston Country Club. The Rotary Club of Weston is passionate about investing in the education and future of our youth and has made this one of our two major fund raisers of the year. $20,000 in scholarship funds was also raised by a “drawdown” social event in March. In addition, each month the Rotary Club recognizes and awards a scholarship to two area high school students. Based on academic achievement and community service, we name them our “Students of the Month”. These outstanding students, chosen by their school advisors and principals, prepare and deliver an address at a regular Rotary meeting.
The Rotary Club of Weston is a community service organization which helps people in need within our community and the world while building bridges of peace through understanding. The major project of Rotary International, an organization of 34,000 clubs and 1.2 million members worldwide, is the eradication of polio. We are now only three countries short of making this dreaded, crippling disease a bad memory. More information is available by visiting www.Rotary.org . Rotary Club of Weston meets every Thursday morning from 7:30 – 8:30 AM at Weston Hills Country Club for breakfast and a lively program. If you would like more information, please contact me chuckyeh@aol. com or any Weston Rotarian. And, for our latest happenings, be sure to check out our club website at www.WestonRotary.org, and the “Rotary Club of Weston” Fan Page on Facebook.

Mother’s Day BY JEFF PERLMAN
Struggling for Mother’s Day Ideas—Consider these to enhance mom’s lifestyle “Being a full-time mother is one of the highest salaried jobs... since the payment is pure love.” ~Mildred B. Vermont. While that may be true, it doesn’t mean that you should let Mother’s Day pass with just a peck on the cheek for mom. Your friends at Lifestyle Publications have some other ideas in mind. We have scoured our backyard to come up with unique and classy ideas to surprise mom on her special day.
It has been said that a suburban mother’s role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and by car forever after. If you’re ’ K Karen Dixon Di off Coral C l Springs S i that th t statement t t t rings i true. Dixon spends her days ferrying her two teenage kids to soccer, music lessons and friend’s houses. She’d have it no other way. “I love the time together in the car,” said Dixon. “No one is on the phone or playing on their tablet—it’s when we catch up on life.” It also helps that Dixon rides in absolute luxury; a loaded Hyundai Genesis that her fiancée got her from Rick Case Hyundai. “With the rims, it looks like a Mercedes,” she says. “People stop me all

the time. As the kids say—and they are the best judges—the car rocks.” Since moms spend their Si d so much h off th i time ti in i transit, t it doesn’t d ’t it make sense that they should love the car, truck or van they are driving? Of course. So what are some of the hot cars this Spring season? If it’s luxury and utility that mom craves, consider springing for the Infiniti JX35. According to our friends at Lauderdale Infiniti, the JX35 seats seven comfortably and offers three rows of seating. The JX35 has all the luxury trimmings and blends the crossover comfort and efficiency of its smaller FX with the people- and cargo-carrying capability of its larger QX56. Infiniti is ready to take on the luxury family SUV segment with this beauty. If sporty is more mom’s style, consider the amazing Fiat 500, a head turner that retails for less than $14,000. Kimberly Strauss-Bergman of Weston says her Fiat 500 turns heads wherever she goes. “I can’t think of a better gift,” she says. “The car is a lot of fun to drive and more practical than you would think.”

ALLIED KITCHEN HOME AND BATH
Now the worst thing you can do is bring mom a vacuum cleaner for Mother’s Day, but splurging on the actual kitchen and the bath is a sure winner. The kitchen is a family gathering spot and an investment in a dream kitchen will provide years of enjoyment and practical use. Similarly, the bathroom is a sanctuary and a place for pampering and respite. As such, we highly recommend that you consult with mom before springing for major changes. While remodeling may seem daunting and labor intensive, the good news is it doesn’t have to be. Our recommendation is to find a trusted professional to work on designing your dream spaces. One common mistake to avoid: do not act as your own “contractor” to save a few bucks. We scoured local Kitchen and Bath businesses and the common theme was: please hire a pro to avoid costly mistakes. “I tried to do it on my own with a kitchen project and took a bath (no pun intended),” said George who asked that his last name not be disclosed. The Plantation resident learned his lesson when he decided to splurge on his wife’s bathroom.
Pampering is always in style and always appreciated. Let’s start with some pampering for the soul. Nothing relaxes quite like a bath—and here’s where you come in. First, give mom the time to soak. Then make sure the experience is memorable with some scented bath products, like LUSH Bath Bombs. They come in tons of scents and colors which mom is sure to enjoy. We recommend LUSH which has a shop in Aventura. They

“We went to Allied (Kitchen and Bath),” he said. “The experience was night and day and now I will never look to cut corners again. It’s just not worth the time and expense to do it on your own.”
sell an amazing line of handmade cosmetics that have grown increasingly popular with women worldwide. We also highly recommend that you peruse Lifestyle Publications for other pampering ideas—whether it’s a facial, massage, a new outfit or hair style we urge you to indulge. After all, where would be without our mothers?

PELVIC ORGAN
PROLAPSE REPAIRS:
CONSIDERING THE OPTIONS Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common condition affecting many adult women today. The exact prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse is difficult to determine. However, the lifetime risk of requiring at least 1 operation to correct incontinence or prolapse is estimated at approximately 11%. About 200,000 inpatient procedures are performed annually in the United States. In Pelvic organ prolapse, the vagina and the organs surrounding and supporting it descend from their normal position. When the descent involves the bladder it is termed cystocele. Likewise, when the descent involves the rectum and the intestines it is termed rectocele and enterocele respectively. The descent of the uterus (uterine prolapse) through the vagina is not uncommon. The severity of the condition is based on the degree of the descent. Patients can present with isolated or a combination of the aforementioned conditions. An intense network of muscles, ligaments and connective tissue collectively support and hold the pelvic organs in their normal position. Weakening or collapse the support leads to prolapse of the pelvic organs namely: vagina, bladder, rectum and the uterus. Childbirth may lead to weakening of the pelvic support. Pregnancy itself, without vaginal birth has also been cited for weakening the support structures. Menopause and lack of estrogen are predisposing factors for POP. The common symptoms relating
to POP are pressure in the vagina, lump or bulge at the vaginal opening, urinary and bowel incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Urinary retention or hydronephrosis (kidney dilation) can also be noted in severe cases. Diagnostic evaluation can include physical and pelvic examination, ultrasonogram, video-urodynamics, MRI and/or cytoscopy. Surgery is often essential to treat symptomatic POP. Prolapse surgery may be performed with or without synthetic mesh implant. For many years Dr. Gousse has opted to repair prolapses without synthetic mesh. He prefers to use porcine or cadaveric tissue to repair the weakness of the pelvic floor. There have been some reports of synthetic mesh extrusion in the vaginal canal or erosion into the urinary tract. Therefore, patients must be very carefully selected prior to using synthetic meshes. In some cases, pelvic floor strengthening exercises and vaginal pessaries are good alternative options. Pelvic muscle exercises can improve pelvic floor muscle tone and urinary incontinence. Pessaries are manufactured from medical-grade silicone and are safe, cost-effective, and minimally invasive options for treating patients with pelvic organ prolapse. The pessaries can be inserted in the vagina to reduce the prolapse and changed once a month to every 3 months. Surgery may not be indicated for women with minimal or no symptoms or who are unable to undergo surgery because of medical reasons. For those patients requiring surgery, it is usually performed under

BRANDS BEHAVING BADLY BY: DAVE KUSTIN
DAVE KUSTIN Principal at Element-M www.element-m.com 954-557-7476 info@element-m.com
Brand Behavior and Advertising/ Communication Incongruence, defined as: “A state-of-being; when advertising and/or customer facing communications do not align with the way a company behaves, acts, performs, or provides an experience for customers. This is not a onetime event, rather, it is endemic to the company or organization.” Let’s agree for a second that companies are in fact like people. Meaning, just like people, companies are able to communicate beliefs, opinions, thoughts, and all the nuances that go along with it. And when they do communicate their beliefs, through advertising and other tactics, customers will interpret those communications and act upon them, and this is where the incongruence occurs. When your brand’s outbound communication does not match the experience, you have Brand Behavior and Advertising/Communication Incongruence. Don’t panic, this is curable. Remember, your brand is not one thing; it is every thing. Company name, logo, signage, uniforms,

sales pitch, web copy, collateral, titles, avatars, email signatures… you get the picture. Here’s how it happens: your advertising is clever and memorable, your collateral is crisp, your sales person knows the content like a pro, your social media messages inspire action, your wait staff is on point, customer service reps are sublime. Or not. Maybe your company is only doing some of these things well and failing at others. Imagine this for a second. Customer X sees your genius ad for your restaurant, the photography is top notch, the copy speaks to them and they act. They grab their spouse and run to your restaurant and the experience does not match the vision that was presented and promised in the ad. In other words, the brand did not behave the way the advertising suggested it would. This is what kills brands every day. Here’s how you begin fix it. Go back to your strategic positioning statement; a.k.a. your north star. What’s that? This is the r e a s o n you are in business; what you do for whom to solve a need. Find the truth that is your brand and then make sure that truth shows up in everything your company does when it comes to outbound communication and customer touch points. Find the weak links in your brand experience

and retool them to align with your brand’s truth. Take Apple, for example, when you walk into a store everything fits together seamlessly. Everything matches. All of the items listed above (brand is every thing) are in complete alignment. This is what brand owners should strive for, and it is attainable. All it takes is discipline and creativity. The brands that are consistent in everything they do are the ones that win.

COULD YOU HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES? I TEST FOR 150 DIFFERENT FOODS AND ADDITIVES.
“I CAN BARELY LEAVE THE HOUSE,” Heidi said, squinting her eyes the entire time. “Perhaps if we turned off the fluorescent lights, you’d be more comfortable. I can see well enough with the light coming through my window treatments.” “Thank you Dr. Woliner. Bright lights definitely make my migraines worse. If you could only fix my IBS with a flip of a switch …” “Tell me more.” “Some weeks I’m constipated, not having a BM for five days or more, even with laxatives. Lately it’s been the opposite; I’m in the bathroom at least ten times a day. My bum is so irritated that I now see blood on the toilet paper each time I go. And the bloating! I can go from being normal to 5 months pregnant in the span of a few hours.” I empathized, “I can see how frustrating that can be. What have your doctors told you?” “The GI looked at me from top to bottom, literally. He said I had acid reflux, so he put me on Nexium. I don’t have Crohn’s, just hemorrhoids that bleed pretty bad.” “Anything else?” “I had ‘sludge’ in my gallbladder, so they took that out. Didn’t help. The ER thought I had appendicitis, so they removed that too.” “Have you ever been tested for food allergies?” “Like peanuts? I had a skin test that came out normal.” “There are many types of adverse reactions to food, and swelling up due to a nut allergy is only one of
them. I was actually thinking about the other things: lactose intolerance, gluten allergy, and intolerances to food and food additives, such as MSG [1].” “Dr. Woliner, I brought you all my old records. If it isn’t in there, then I guess not.” I moved onto my physical exam, “Say Ahhhh.” As I looked into her mouth, I saw this white/yellow coating all over Heidi’s tongue, as well as two canker sores on the inside of her cheek. Heidi’s breath didn’t smell too good either … “I think we have our answer. You’re not digesting your food, you’re fermenting it!” “I don’t understand.” “In addition to our teeth (and a fork and knife), we digest our food chemically, with stomach acid, digestive enzymes, and good bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophillus, etc). Acid blocking drugs such as Nexium interfere with that process, allowing bad bacteria to grow and putrefy your food [2]. The byproducts irritate your gut, causing canker sores, dyspepsia, and diarrhea [3]. Proteins you’d normally break down, are absorbed intact, leading to food allergy symptoms of migraines, arthritis, and depression [4].” “How do we find out what I’m allergic to?” “I start with a blood test for 150 different foods and additives to see which ones are most likely to be a problem, but the gold standard is a ‘Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Food Challenge’ [5]. I want to know for sure you have a bad

That bad bacteria, ‘Small Intestine Bacteria Overgrowth (SIBO)’ is what they call it, causes a ruckus inside your gut [6]. Eliminating the bad bugs, and replacing them with friendly probiotics helps reduce food allergy symptoms [7]. After your GI tract is cleaned up, you may be able to tolerate foods you were previously sensitive to.” In addition to having an overgrowth of Pseudomonas, which happened to be resistant to several antibiotics; Heidi’s tests showed responses to egg white, pork, onion, chicken, milk and coffee [8]. Challenge testing proved that coffee was a false positive, for which Heidi was extremely thankful. A short course of treatment, combined with a pharmacologic dose of probiotics improved Heidi’s bowel movements to two “Class 4-5 Stools” per day [9]. Upon Heidi’s follow-up visit three months later, “Dr. Woliner, you can keep the lights on; I don’t get headaches anymore [10].”

YOUR WEBSITE IS A GREAT PUBLICITY TOOL SPREAD THE NEWS AND KEEP IT UP TO DATE All too often, companies overhaul their website and stop. Why? I’m often told that updates take too much time or are too much trouble. That’s a big mistake. When potential customers first read about you in a news article or ad - they are going to Google you. What will they find: A blog that hasn’t been updated in a year? A news article from 2010? You think the website is current, but visitors know it’s not. And then you’ve blown your chance to make a good first impression. Worse, you may have damaged your brand. Your website must be regularly updated, especially in this 24/7 world. Standard pages such as “About Us” and “Contact Us” can stay the same, but you have to post fresh content to keep it interesting and relevant. The Web is now the go-to place for news and information, which is great for your company. You do not have to depend on traditional news media for publicity. Everything your company does can – and should -- be posted online and spread across the Internet. Take, for example, Canyon Ranch Living Miami Beach Residences. Its website went live more than two years ago and has been updated dozens of times. Click on the news tab and you will see well over a dozen articles and TV reports just this year. They are in English and Portuguese and are taken from magazines, newspapers and
trade publications. Why go to the trouble? Because before potential clients spend money with you, they want to know who you are. They learn that from reading about what you’re doing now. That’s why Canyon Ranch Living updates weekly its schedule of healthyliving activities. Potential buyers of residences will discover the lifestyle that sets Canyon Ranch Living apart from other oceanfront communities. Keeping a website fresh doesn’t take a lot of time. Your articles can be short. Sometimes all you need is a few paragraphs and a photo. Updating is also simple. Once upon a time, you had to hire a geek to tinker with your website. Now, if you know how to update your Facebook page, odds are you can keep your website current, too. What do you put online? Talk about what your company is doing: offering new products and services, welcoming new customers, promoting important new hires, participating in community activities, attending industry conferences and so on. You don’t need Big News either. If you’re quoted by a newspaper or TV report, let everyone e

RAISING THE LEVEL OF PROSTATE CANCER CARE: E N H A N C E D O P E R AT I N G R O O M A N D A D VA N C E D T E C H N I Q U E S
DR. ALOK SHRIVASTAVA, MD Urologist Cleveland Clinic FLorida 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd. :HVWRQ )ORULGD ‡ http://my.clevelandclinic.org/ florida Each year approximately 200,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States. It is the most common form of cancer for men in the nation. A patient with prostate cancer may experience no symptoms in the early stages of the disease, and unfortunately by the time symptoms develop, the disease is often incurable. For this reason, early detection of the disease is critical. Screening for Prostate Cancer involves performing a rectal exam and evaluating the levels of PSA, a protein essential to reproduction. If diagnosed with prostate cancer, it is important to know all the treatment options. Robotic-Assisted Surgery with Enhanced 3D Projection Cleveland Clinic Florida offers the most advanced surgical treatment options for prostate cancer, including robotic surgery. The roboticassisted radical prostatectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed in Cleveland Clinic’s newly enhanced operating room. This procedure enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision. A 3-D camera

provides a magniďŹ ed view from inside the patient while the surgeon controls a set of robotic arms from a nearby console. The robotic arms mimic the movement of the human hands, wrists and ďŹ ngers providing surgeons an extensive range of motion and a precision that is difďŹ cult to reach through traditional surgery. Cleveland Clinic Florida urologist Alok Shrivastava, MD, specializes in robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy. He stresses the beneďŹ ts of robotic surgery. “Typically, patients undergoing roboticassisted prostate surgery encounter signiďŹ cantly less blood loss, and they beneďŹ t from reduced hospital stays, faster healing, less postoperative pain, and shorter recovery times,â€? according to Dr. Shrivastava. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, the robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy is performed in a newly enhanced operating room which combines state of the art magniďŹ ed video projection with the 3D robotic surgical system. The operating room is equipped with two large 110 inch stereoscopic displays allowing the surgical team to view the patient with the same precision as the surgeon. With the aid of special polarized glasses, the surgical team gains better clarity, brilliant colors and reďŹ ned details that allow them to better assist the surgeon who can operate with greater precision. Other Surgical Treatment Options Cleveland Clinic Florida also offers a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, a minimally-invasive procedure in which the surgeon removes the prostate gland by making buttonhole incisions. Through these incisions, the surgeon uses a tiny

Our experts take a team approach to each patient—lending their combined expertise to diagnose cancer accurately and completely. After diagnosis, a wide range of minimally-invasive treatment options are offered for the full spectrum of cancers; breast, prostate, lung, digestive system, ovarian, among others—many of which were pioneered by our own physicians and have since become the gold standard in cancer care. Support services are also available to help during a patient or family member’s illness. A variety of support groups are offered, open to anyone facing cancer, giving an opportunity to share experiences and concerns with others. EXECUTIVE SEARCH FIRM
GETS FOUND
The field of executive staffing and recruitment is a very competitive one. Despite being one of the leading South Florida executive recruiting firms, our client, Steven Douglas Associates, knew that in order to stay current, they had to enhance their online presence. In fact, when he came to us, Chairman and CEO, Steve Sadaka, said, “We’ve been in the executive recruiting field in South Florida for 27 years, so we’re really well known with local clients. We knew, however, that new clients and people coming from out of town would be searching Google; at the time we had basically no presence on Google.” Steven Douglas Associates’ solution? Partner with Exults to establish a significant, complementary online presence. Sadaka wanted to attract new clients moving in from out of town and he also wanted to upgrade his website to reflect his company’s professionalism and accomplishments. “Exults tailored their fee-structure and programs to our needs, rather than demanding an expensive retainer, up-front. Key for me was getting my site updated and pushed to the first page of Google. Eventually, we expanded [our services package] and Exults was able to start with what I needed and stay within our budget.”
Exults developed a campaign strategy which would give Steven Douglas Associates the visibility they were looking for and a custommade website that better reflected the prestige of the Steven Douglas brand. We launched a strong backlinking push with relevant, keywordrich blogs, articles and press releases. The Exults team added features which allowed potential clients in different industries to submit a form directly to the head of that division; making the process easier for users and saving Steven Douglas Associates valuable administrative time. The site was optimized in conjunction with the selected keywords and thriving backlinking campaign; causing its relevance in the eyes of Google to skyrocket. The result? An attractive, user-friendly website on the first page of Google. Before long, Steven Sadaka began to see significant returns on his investment. The organic traffic on the Steven Douglas Associates website jumped an impressive 89% from January 1, 2011 to January 1, 2012. The dramatic increase in traffic brought with it qualified leads which converted largely into sales. Sadaka says, “We track our progress carefully. In the last four months, we’ve generated over $100,000 in

fees from clients who found us on the internet.” After being in business for nearly 30 years, Steven Douglas Associates was already a major player in their industry; the company’s online presence needed to reflect their existing prestige. A professionally designed, streamlined website and high position on the search engine results page provided the recruiting firm the boost they were looking for; almost doubling their internet traffic in just one year. Sadaka has since then expanded the list of services he receives from Exults and is pleased with his continued online momentum. Steven Douglas Associates continues its partnership with Exults; and we are both looking forward to fresh levels of success in the coming year. WILLIAM ZUPPAS IS A THIRD GENERATION CHEF AND TAKES PRIDE IN CREATING UP TO 10 SPECIALTIES OFFERED ON THE MENU AT IRELAND’S AT ANY TIME.
Ireland’s Steakhouse
A “SPOT-ON” PRESENTATION… BY RANDI PRESS
I love presentations, don’t you? When dining at a restaurant and the server captures my attention with a really special offering, there’s nothing more engaging that will set the tone for the rest of the evening. Ireland’s Steakhouse at the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure delivers multiple presentations throughout the dining experience. Located in the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure, this elegant steakhouse is a local jewel. The warm tones and stylish décor creates a sophisticated but yet cozy atmosphere that allows you to feel relaxed immediately. Glenda, our server for the evening, exceeded expectations with her precise descriptions of Chef William Zuppas signature offerings. Her in-depth knowledge of the wine selection is a compliment to the sommelier who keeps all the servers in the know. Presentations are made tableside. We began with the basket presentation which included pretzel bread with homemade mustard butter, sun-dried tomato crisps with Parmesan cheese and twisted rolls paired with honey orange blossom butter. All homemade, each bite leaving you craving for another taste. Glenda introduced the next presentation; four specific salts offered for use with your entrée. She shared the significance of adding the

Mediterranean white sea salt for any use, red Hawaiian sea salt to enhance a chicken dish, the pink Himalayan recommended for seafood and the black Hawaiian Lava for steak. These four sea salts reside in a small orange glass dish divided with scooped areas. After these highlights, we eagerly ordered our appetizers. Ireland’s Steakhouse offers quite a few unique appetizers. The Skillet NY Strip is thin sliced prime NY Strip marinated in a Thai sweet Chile sauce seared on a hot cast iron skillet tableside. There are no words so make sure you try this! The Foie Gras with roasted sweet potato and butternut squash, featuring candied bacon and cherry compote is decadent. This is absolutely a must-have. The sizzling deep sea scallops with sake poached pear and pepper slaw is incredibly delicious and is rivaled by the sautéed wild shrimp with arepas and guasacaca. If you don’t fancy these starters, you won’t be disappointed with the tenderloin carpaccio or the warm spinach salad with homemade apple cider vinaigrette. William Zuppas is a third generation chef and takes pride in creating up to 10 specialties offered on the menu at Ireland’s at any time. A wonderful tableside knife presentation allows you to choose your blade and prepares you for your main entrée. You may choose a traditional

bone-in Rib Eye or for the more unique alternative, a bonein Filet Mignon ordered rare plus served absolutely “spoton!” The Spinellus, the most flavorful part of the Rib Eye without the bone, will leave your mouth watering. The twin lobster tails made their debut and were sweet, grilled to perfection, and served with vanilla butter. The Alaskan Halibut prepared with rhubarb coulis and potato crust is definitely worth the trip. Preparing for the side dishes was a lobster-lover’s dream. Lobster waffle fries and lobster macaroni and cheese are made with tender large chunks of lobster, cream and cheese. Traditional sides are offered but with those options, live a little and share as the sides are large! Dessert is to be savored! The warm Budini, a flourless chocolate dessert served with fresh berries, toasted almonds and crème anglaise was incredible! The dessert trio is outstanding. Grand Marnier Brulee, Pots de Crème and New York cheese cake will tempt even the most disciplined.

AND
another thing... STARBUCKS ENVY BY BRUCE TURKEL
Bill and Eddie were sitting at an outdoor table having lunch. I had run over to the bayside shack right after my downtown lunch meeting to chat with a potential client and then needed to zip out to check on a video production. But I had a couple of minutes before I had to be at the edit so I walked over to say hi. Bill was in shorts and sporting two days of stubble. Ed was in khakis and sneakers. Ed had a beer. Bill was drinking wine. Neither was looking at their smartphones. And did I mention that it was 1:30 on a workday? “Look at the two of you – happy as pigs in mangos, enjoying a beautiful day with nowhere to go. Man, I want to be you when I grow up.” I told them about Starbucks envy. You know Starbucks envy. That’s when you go to Starbucks and see those people sitting there in the sun. Usually they have a bike leaning against their table or they’re there with their dog. They’re reading something on their iPad or thumbing through The New York Times. Not a care in the world and clearly nowhere to rush off to. They remind me of that old poster, “Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits.” When I go to Starbucks, it’s usually to meet someone on the run — I’m meeting Marcos at the Starbucks in the Grove at nine or Kim at the Starbucks on 69th Street at two in the afternoon. We’ll grab a cup of coffee or tea, share pleasantries, and then get down to work — exchanging ideas and layouts, strategizing next steps — before we run off to our next meeting. Of course, while we’re meeting we’re fielding text messages and calls, mostly about where we’re going next, who we’re going to meet, and what time we’ll be getting together. But just to sit there and take in the scene, with nothing pressing to run off to… wow. My desires might be simple but that kind of takes my breath away. So anyway, I told Bill and Ed about my fantasy — my Starbucks envy. Ed laughed and told me a story: “I was walking through Coconut Grove one night and there were a couple of guys playing music on the street corner. They had a guitar case out in front of them and a few people gathered around and they were having a great time. I thought, ‘I want to do that, too.’ So I went out and
98
MAY 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM
bought a guitar and have been taking guitar lessons ever since. I’m not so good yet but I’m giving myself 10 years because I want to be just like Turkel.” (Hey wait a minute, that’s me.) Here’s the funny part. Until Ed mentioned that it was me and my buddy he stumbled upon on that street corner, I was listening to his story thinking, “I want to do that, too.” It wasn’t until he mentioned who he saw playing that it dawned on me that I already do that. It’s more than the old paradigm to “be careful what you wish for because you might get it.” In this case, it’s about realizing what you’ve already got, what the perception is of what you’ve got, and what your perception is of what else is out there. The grass is always greener, indeed. And it’s not just a good thing to think about when you’re evaluating your life. It’s also a good exercise to do when you’re thinking about your brand. After all, a brand is not what you think of your company, it’s what your employees and your customers — and your potential customers — think of it. And it’s very possible that those two viewpoints are not in sync. Kodak thought it stood for the finest in photography until its customers cared only about digital photography and Kodak found itself in bankruptcy. Palm thought its brand stood for PDAs until it realized that RIM’s Blackberry and Apple’s iPhone had stolen its market share. And Blackberry, who thought its brand was de rigueur for portable communication in the boardroom, is quickly discovering that its customers no longer agree. Even powerhouse Google, which preemptively purchased YouTube to maintain their superiority in search technology, is concerned that Facebook and the voice-recognition company Nuance, will take their place in both search and ad sales. So whether you’re dashing to a meeting, playing music on a street corner or marketing one of the world’s most important companies, remember that when it comes to your brand, perception IS reality.
