SUMMER TIME, AND THE LIVIN’ IS EASY That’s right! Summer is on its way and as the song says, things are already starting to get more relaxed. Many of you will take vacations; others will be headed to our uncrowded beaches, while others will take in rounds of golf at courses that were too busy in the winter and yet others will be content just to enjoy their own backyard pools and barbeques. That’s the Estero Lifestyle! We are offering some helpful hints and ideas to keep identity thieves from stealing your lifestyle this summer and tips to protect your identity. We can never be too careful! Our cover story this month showcases Fatherhood. We have profiled four outstanding fathers from our area in a tribute to all fathers. I would like to wish all of the great dads out there a special Happy Father’s Day. Are you looking for the most unique gifts to give that special dad, husband or grandfather? Look no more. Just head over to the Diamond District and ask to see the William Henry collection. Their selection of knives, pens, money clips and divot tools are pieces that will become treasured heirlooms. The ‘hot’ destination this summer is, of course, England. Not only will the 2012 Summer Olympics & Wimbledon be going on, but many other festivals as well. Read all about what is available in “The Royal Treatment.” When we think of the Estero lifestyle we have to think of the many species of animals living around us in Florida. With humans and animals competing for the same space, it is often the animals who suffer. The new von Arx Wildlife Hospital at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida

will enhance wildlife care. Learn about what this new facility will mean to all of us animal lovers. What about all of the dangers surrounding the abundance of modern day technology and how everything we think, say or do can be so obvious to anyone? “Eyes and Ears Are Everywhere” gives us some warnings about what could happen. And for you tennis buffs, how about 10 tips to immediately improve your tennis game? Can anyone use a little help? Our restaurant feature this month is another newcomer to the area’s restaurant scene – Manhattan Steakhouse in Bonita Springs. June marks the beginning of family travel season. If you’re like us when you hit the road, you want to see something different, not just the usual tourist haunts. Enter http://atlasobscura.com/, a website designed and curated to share the hidden sites of cities you may be visiting. This endlessly fascinating and well curated site will enable you to dazzle your friends when you suggest some off the beaten path destinations. Even if you “staycation,” Altas Obscura can make you seem like an expert. The site has more than a dozen offbeat Florida locations to explore. Our favorite: “The Skunk Ape Research Headquarters” in the Everglades. Dave Shealy is the Jane Goodall of the Florida Everglades. Shealy has spent his entire life studying a smelly hominid cryptid known as the Skunk Ape, and has established the official Skunk Ape Research Center. So what is a Skunk Ape? Think of Florida’s version of Big Foot. Does it exist? That’s for you to decide, but you may want to visit Dave Shealy first. He can be found in Ochopee, Florida. Until next month.

Summertime is here, which means that it’s time to decide on your beach reading list. If you’re looking for inspiration, look no further than a sensational new book entitled “What Do You Want To Do Before You Die?” Jonnie Penn, Dave Lingwood, Duncan Penn and Ben Nemtin – collectively known as The Buried Life have written a stunning book that is sweeping the nation. Their live appearances at schools across the country have become a YouTube sensation as people of all ages share what they would like to accomplish before leaving this Earth. Answers range from having Morgan Freeman read them a bedtime story to ending human trafficking. The Buried Life team wrote the book to prove that four ordinary guys can achieve their bucket lists and inspire others to live their dreams. The Buried Life is so confident that you will love their book that they are willing to buy it back if you don’t like it and they’ll even throw in a t- shirt for your trouble. Now that’s confidence. What Do You Want To Do Before You Die? Is an illustrated collection of your wildest dreams. Two hundred of the most moving, imaginative, amusing, and thought-provoking things to do before you die are brought to life through handmade art curated by Dave, Duncan, Jonnie and Ben—the founders of The Buried Life. These four regular guys are on a mission to complete a list of 100 things before they die, and for every item they accomplish, they help a total stranger do something on his or her own to-do list. Peppered throughout the book are lessons, secrets, and stories that come from five years of asking millions worldwide: What do you want to do before you die? Without spoiling the book, their wish list includes playing basketball with President Obama (done), throwing out the first pitch at a Major League Baseball game and delivering a baby. Star Spangled By Laura J. Cummings
Strike up the band and break out the sparklers. Southwest Florida offers Independence Day festivities aplenty, from old fashioned parades to spectacular fireworks displays. While backyard barbecues and pyrotechnics are traditional Fourth of July fun, the day also offers an opportunity for gathering with the community to celebrate our forefathers and the liberties Americans enjoy as a result of their brave Declaration of Independence from Great Britain, signed on July 4, 1776. For a full day of festivity, local citizens can begin with a morning parade, spend the afternoon reading the Declaration, join a party in the evening and watch the sky light up with fireworks at nightfall. To remember why we celebrate, the Estero Historical Society will host its sixth annual reading of the Declaration of Independence at Estero Community Park at noon. The event will take place at “IT’S A VERY the new Historical Society HOMETOWN headquarters, the renovated CROWD. 1906 Hall-Collier House. “It’s surprising what IT’S PROBABLY the Declaration of ONE OF OUR Independence says,” notes BEST EVENTS.” Historical Society Treasurer Beverly MacNellis. The words of the Declaration are passed out, and fifty citizens, young and old, take turns reading a line or two. A huge American flag flaps with the wind as it hangs from the outstretched ladder of an Estero firetruck. “It’s a really nice, low key affair,” MacNellis said. For more information, visit www.esterohistoricalsociety.com. Another local tradition is the

Bonita Springs Independence Day parade, dating back more than 50 years. The hour and a half parade starts at Rosemary Drive at 9 a.m. and runs along Old 41, ending at Riverside Park. Thirty-five to forty floats are expected to participate, along with walkers, antique autos, sports cars and even a few horses. “Bonita was very rural back when we started, so we used to have a slew of horses,” said parade organizer Jesse Cottrell of Bonita Springs Professional Firefighters Local 3444. Another nod to the past is naming an Honorary Mayor of Survey. This creative and long-standing fundraiser of the Bonita Springs Historical Society seeks candidates to “make promises you can’t possibly keep, build your platform full of lies and do whatever it takes -- anything -- to get elected.” “Votes” are collected in the form of cash donations to the historical society. Bonita Springs was once known as Survey because government surveyors pitched a camp there in the 1870s. It was later renamed by developers looking to increase sales appeal. This year’s parade theme is “Shine a Bright Light on Our Community,” a sentiment chosen by eighth graders at Bonita Springs Charter School. The annual parade is a highlight of Independence Day activities for many families, with plenty of flag waving, candy throwing and even squirt gun soakings. “It’s fun; it’s loud. To me, it’s just tradition,” Cottrell said. “This is what Bonita is known for on the Fourth of July.” Festivities continue at Riverside

Park with a pre-fireworks event which kicks off with a bed race around 4 p.m. About 4,000 people came out for Independence Day fun last year, with activities and contests like watermelon eating. “People love it,” said Lora Taylor, Bonita’s Special Events coordinator. “It’s a very hometown crowd. It’s probably one of our best events.” For more information call Taylor at (239)949-6262 or visit www. cityofbonitasprings.org. For parade entry forms may be found online at www.bonitafire.org. The Naples Fourth of July parade kicks off at 10 a.m., with a route encompassing Broad Avenue South, Third Street South and Fifth Avenue South. Fireworks are scheduled to be launched from the City Pier at 9 p.m. For more information, visit www. naplesgov.com. Cape Coral hosts one of the area’s largest Independence Day events, “Red, White and Boom!” The day kicks off with the “Freedom 5k Race” over the Cape Coral Bridge at 7:15 a.m. The “Free Fun Zone” opens at 4 p.m. and offers inflatable bounce houses, obstacle courses and more than 100 vendors. Live entertainment will be featured throughout the event from the Boom Stage. “It’s so big and spectacular we have to shut down the Cape Coral Bridge and Cape Coral Parkway,” noted organizer Bob Knickman. More than 20,000 come out by land or sea for the festivities, which culminate with a patriotic fireworks show. For more information, call Knickman at (239) 549-6900 or visit www.capecoralchamber.com.

Functional Art: THE WILLIAM HENRY COLLECTION BY LAURA CUMMINGS
This Father’s Day, your favorite man could be carrying a polished piece of prehistoric bone or a bit of galactic history in his pocket, a gift to reflect how truly unique and precious he is. Every man has a story and so does every piece of William Henry functional art. Each knife is years in the making, with some materials, like fossilized wooly mammoth bones, requiring two years to cure before they can be crafted for use on an artisan tool. The William Henry Studio uses a special steel for its incredibly strong yet strikingly beautiful blades. Nine months in the making, the steel is hand-crafted by a fifth-generation Samurai sword maker. When blended with softer metals, the blade bears an extraordinary pattern, plus a super sharp cutting edge with the flexibility to withstand everyday use. “It’s a direct representation of what a Samurai sword would’ve been back in its time,” said Robert Fontenot of the Diamond District, the area’s exclusive William Henry dealer.
20
Although William Henry knives, pens, money clips and divot tools are designed to be used, Fontenot often is asked if they are best kept in a display case because of their exquisite beauty. “As beautiful as it is, it’s every bit as durable and functional, as well,” Fontenot insists. “You’re putting a gift in someone’s pocket that is timeless. They’ll get up every morning and admire the craftsmanship. It will be passed on through generations and appreciated for the work of art it is.” With natural materials such as fossilized walrus tusk, brain coral and meteorite, William Henry pieces are sure to become treasured heirlooms. William Henry Studio founder and master
JUNE 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM
designer Matt Conable says his goal is to create functional art which is “completely unique in the world.” Conable personally designs each knife and leads the production of each extremely limited edition piece. Production typically takes eight months from design to completion, with each step of the delicate process done by hand -the hands of 30 different, highly skilled artisans performing more than 800 individual operations, from etching under a microscope to inlaying 24-carat gold into a cross-hatch pattern of steel. The rare natural materials used to decorate knife handles and other tools each have a story of their own. Exotic hardwoods are harvested from Mexico while
fossilized brain coral is excavated from lime pits in the Florida Keys. Native American divers comb the bottom of the North Sea just two months out of the year, unearthing a fossilized walrus tusk and a wooly mammoth tooth and vertebrae -- some of the most amazing, yet most challenging natural materials to work with. The result is a stunning piece of functional art. “They’re exquisite tools, but they’re also canvases that allow us to showcase these great materials and tell these
timeless and remarkable stories,” Conable said. Each piece is unique due to the rich patterns found in the natural materials, whether it be mother of pearl or crystallite from a supernova explosion millions of years ago. One knife, kept in the Diamond District safe, is adorned with a dinosaur bone fragment. Mokume Gane, a decorative wood grain metal forged in ancient Japanese tradition, is used on many handles. Conable also likes to use a light yet tough titanium blend specifically engineered for aerospace applications. To Diamond District coowner Todd Schusterman, the William Henry collection offers something truly unique for men who appreciate the finer things. “We wanted to find something guy sexy, and this is definitely guy sexy,” Schusterman said. “They love it, and the ladies are so excited because now they have something so unique and so exclusive to purchase for their guys.” Unlike most “exclusive” offerings of two-to-five
thousand from other high-end manufacturers, William Henry produces limited editions of 500 or less. “There is a luxury in having a knife there is only fifteen of in the world,” said Fontenot, referring to a William Henry knife available in the Coconut Point store, featuring polished mammoth tooth and a Damascus patterned blade. “The pattern is basically the fingerprint of the artist who made this,” Fontenot adds. It’s little wonder the William Henry collection has captured numerous headlines and awards, as well as the attention of several elite clients. William Henry owners include actor/director Antonio Banderas, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, musician Zach Brown and former U.S. President George W. Bush. Joe Mantegna recently commissioned a knife in celebration of his star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. “It’s the topic of every knife magazine out there,” Fontenot said. “You really have a rare treasure in your pocket.”

They can then observe your account to verify if your cards are being used at another location. For example, John Stewart of Coral Springs never contacted his credit card company and he
will provide the authorities with valuable information. One other note of caution to the many social media users out there, don’t publicize your travel plans to all your friends and relatives on Facebook or Twitter. It’s careless. Even with all the online security settings and other safeguards in place. You’re just inviting trouble because you don’t really know who’s looking at your posts, especially with all the trolls snooping around; it’s an open invitation to rob your house. Identity thieves quickly adapt and reinvent new ways to steal your personal information, your money and your lifestyle. They are diligent but these simple tips should make them look elsewhere for another victim. Just remember, be prepared, be careful and stay alert – then have fun.

If thieves are casing a neighborhood and see an overstuffed mailbox, you automatically become a target. After that clean out your wallet or purse and bring only the essentials. Leave items such as your social security card and check book at home in a secure place. Bring two credit cards in case one gets lost or becomes inactivated.
I you have to bring If a ATM card with an you, bring a pincard. based If you don’t one have then simply ask yo our bank for one. your Also, be very careful oosing a location when ch choosing to withdraw money out of a machine. Make certain it’s safe ne has not been and the machin machine tampered with in any manner. There are mechanisms such as skimming devices that thieves attach to ATM machines. These devices capture your personal information once you swipe your card. Check the machine carefully or ask a manager at the place you are staying for a trusted spot to withdraw money. If you plan on taking your laptop don’t access personal accounts at the local coffee shop with internet capability. Most Wi-Fi hot spots don’t have security. The same goes for hotel computers or computers at internet cafés. Identity thieves use software such as keyloggers, which track your keystrokes and steal your personal information. Jan Archers can attest to it. “I was relaxing and checking my bank account at the local coffee shop,” said Jan. “I never thought someone could steal my account number so easily and drain my account. I was in shock.” If you are staying in a hotel don’t leave any personal information out in the open. Lock it up in the safe. Also, make photocopies of all your key documents, such as your passport, plane tickets, hotel and reservations even your driver’s license and place them in the safe, too. If your wallet or purse is stolen these photocopies

Manhattan Steakhouse BY LAURA CUMMINGS
“YOU WANT THAT BIG PIECE OF MEAT THAT’S JUST SIZZLING ON THE TABLE THAT YOU CAN’T WAIT TO SINK YOUR TEETH INTO.”
34
Tucked away on an access road near Pelican Landing, Manhattan Steakhouse is developing a reputation as a “neighborhood gem” among steak and potato aficionados in Estero and Bonita Springs. Since opening in February, the area’s newest steakhouse has earned kudos as a top-notch dining establishment, serving only USDA Prime dryaged beef. The restaurant also offers a splendid selection of seafood, but it’s the exceptional taste and texture of the steak which draws most customers -- and keeps them coming back. Prime, the highest grade of beef, is reserved for the finest steakhouses. Additionally, the 28day aging process gives the meat a robust flavor and sensational tenderness. Manhattan Steakhouse’s signature menu item is a succulent porterhouse, seared in a 1,800-degree oven and served sizzling with the natural juices. “You want that big piece of meat that’s just sizzling on the table that you can’t wait to sink your teeth into,” explains owner Bella Purisic. Bella is no stranger to steak. She grew up in Brooklyn, working alongside her uncle, who owns four of New York’s top steakhouses. She’s also no stranger to restaurant management. She and husband Kenny own Molino’s Ristorante at The Promenade. The new steakhouse is Bella’s “baby.” “I love this,” she beams, looking around the cozy yet classy dining room. She not only manages the restaurant, she greets customers at the door and throughout their dining experience, ensuring everything is to their satisfaction.

Seated in the covered courtyard area, the evening breeze complimented the ambiance of the steakhouse. Candlelight and piped music set the tone for a relaxed dining experience. Our server, Alan, promptly supplied homemade rolls with butter and steak sauce. Yes, steak sauce. It’s placed on the table at the start of the meal and complements nearly everything on the menu, Bella noted. The tangy, original recipe is not only dipping sauce for the bread, but also dressing for the popular Manhattan Chopped Salad, featuring iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, chopped shrimp, smoked bacon and crumbled blue cheese. The appetizer list is filled with many tantalizing options like Manhattan clam chowder, jumbo crab cake and smoked salmon with capers and onions. We began with the flavorful Sashimi Spicy Tuna with citrus soy glaze. For the main course, house specialty steaks include filet mignon, “Cowboy” rib eye and New York strip. The most popular way to feast is to share with friends, ordering the porterhouse for two, three or four. Sides also come “family style,” with popular dishes including the house specialty German
i i potatoes, fried onion rings, asparagus and sauteed mushrooms. Seafood entree choices include Dover Sole with lemon and wine capers, Jumbo Maine Lobster and Pan Seared Diver, featuring shrimp and scallops. An array of red and white wines, champagnes and merlots are offered to compliment any dish. We settled on the Porterhouse for two and could hear our meal arriving as it sizzled toward us. As tantalizing vapors filled the air, our mouths began to water. Alan served up filet cuts from one side of the T-bone and slices of New York strip from the other, propping the dish so the juices pooled at one end, perfect for spooning over the meat. Charred on the outside, the steak was cooked to perfection, with a soft, pink center so tender it could be cut with a butter knife. Paired with the Special German Potatoes and the house specialty creamed spinach, the flavors melded delightfully. The potatoes are Bella’s favorite dish, featuring sauteed golden potatoes with onions which are then baked for a splendid crunch. We capped off the meal with a satisfyingly sweet desert and cappuccino. The Key Lime Pie was smooth and creamy, especially topped with homemade German Schlag, an airy version of whipped cream. The schlag also served as a rich topping for the apple strudel, with its gooey caramel sauce and flaky pastry shell. It’s easy to see why Manhattan Steakhouse has already developed a loyal customer base. The quiet location and attentive staff, along with the best cuts of beef, make it an excellent choice for special occasions, with the courtyard accommodating private parties of up to fifty. Manhattan Steakhouse is located at 24940 S. Tamiami Trail, Suite 103. Reservations are recommended and may be made by calling (239)676-8687 or online at www. manhattan1steakhouse.com.

AND
another thing... EYES AND EARS ARE EVERYWHERE BY BRUCE TURKEL
Buck’s Restaurant in Woodside, California, is ground zero for venture capitalists that invest in technology. I’m in town to give a presentation in Silicon Valley and stopped by this diner to eat breakfast and drink in some of the local culture. Like lots of small, family-owned breakfast spots, Buck’s has a vast collection of local memorabilia hanging on the wall. Except where you might expect display cases of trout flies or Harley Davidson parts, Buck’s walls are festooned with silicon chips and tech discoveries. The people look different here, too. Most are young men, conscientiously scruffy in their North Face fleece vests and expensive Italian eyeglasses. The few women who are here are also young and fresh-faced, and look like they just strolled off a ski slope. Almost everyone is on their smartphone or tablet. Those who aren’t are sharing a presentation on their MacBook Pros. And everyone’s talking pretty loudly. But unlike coffee shops in New York, where everyone talks about financial schemes, or restaurants in LA where the chatter is all about “the biz” (movies and entertainment), the talk here is all tech-related “speeds and feeds.” The couple in the booth next to me is a perfect example. The guy is in his late 30s, studiously underdressed with a severe case of bed head. His date, a bubbly blond in her 20s, is hanging on his every word and expressing her interest with staccato outbursts of self-conscious laughter. What caught my attention were the words he was using to keep her attention. Instead of the bon mots of typical seduction, his romancing was peppered with terms such as “milestone-based,” “seed relationships,” “mobile solutions,” “platforms,” and “self-partnering.” I’m not sure all of these are even real tech terms but she kept giggling appreciatively so his rap must have been working. The other thing he was doing to impress her was listing the various companies his venture firm has invested in. And here’s where it gets interesting: The logo embroidered on his jacket read “Azure Capital” and he was talking about one of their larger investments, an online video site called “TwitVid.” So with a few stabs on my web-enabled iPad we pulled up his company’s site and found his name and CV. His headshot confirmed that the guy on the screen and the guy on the make were the same. Are you following what just happened?

Talk about loose lips sinking ships. Thanks to ubiquitous Internet information and a loud-mouthed Lothario, we were able to trace and substantiate an overheard rumor with real market confirmation. If I was a reporter, a competitor or a corporate spy looking for info, imagine what could have happened. If there were something in it for me or for my clients, I could have tweeted the information he discussed immediately or posted it online. Either way, it’s possible that his partners or his competition could have read about him and his secrets before he even got back to the office from breakfast. And with info aggregator sites such as TechCrunch and Mashable acting more and more like scandal site TMZ and actively scouring the web for upto-the-minute scoops, the info about Azure and TwitVid could’ve been worldwide before lunch. Luckily for my new friend, I have no interest in his business nor in publicly embarrassing him. But all of a sudden, people everywhere are armed with digital cameras and web-enabled devices that turn them into 24/7 Internet paparazzi and the worlds of business, news, and politics will never be the same. Gary Hart, Donna Rice and the Real Monkey Business were only the beginning. Soon television reality shows and whole Internet channels will be dedicated to unscripted, caughtin-the-act user-generated “gotcha” videos. This revelation suggests that not only should people be more circumspect about what they say and where they say it, but that new chances will continue to pop up for rumor-based marketing opportunities. Also, that formerly no-brainer branding vehicles such as logo-ed shirts and caps and vanity license plates should now be used judiciously because of their ability to give the cyber sleuth a quick and easy way to start their search. After all, most of us have secrets and skeletons we’d rather keep hidden in the closet. And today’s technology is going to make that harder and harder.
