JUNE 2012

FATHERS – FLAG DAY– FACEBOOK

This month we celebrate fathers on June 17th. So, I wish all the dads a Happy Father’s Day. Tim Russert wrote the book, Wisdom of Our Fathers with reflections from children and the impact their father had on their lives. I read this book as well as listen to it on long trips in the car. The messages from each individual’s perspective are both heartwarming and heart wrenching. It reminds me of the lessons of service, opportunity and perseverance my dad taught me and my hope of what I pass to my son. Through the years, fatherhood has taken on many facets from the Greatest Generations war torn toughness to today’s kinder, gentler dad. What I learned from my dad is - you are what you do. That is, you make a life not by what you get, rather by what you give. My dad was not able to provide much monetarily, but he did provide the example of the power of service to others. This is what creates opportunity and one’s legacy. Embracing this characteristic has been challenging and at times disadvantageous to me personally. Still, I believe, in the long run, it will produce benefits beyond my dreams. I know there will be days when I stumble or when people try to knock me down, but I was taught to look up, get up and never give up! Flag Day – When? Always June 14th! This is the day for all Americans, and those who have been given the opportunity to live here in the USA, to celebrate and show respect for our flag, its designers and makers as well as those men and women who protect, or paid the ultimate sacrifice for,

6

what the flag symbolizes. Our flag represents our independence and our unity as a nation - one nation, under God, indivisible. Our flag has a proud history and is known as an emblem of Liberty around the world. So, no matter where you are from, I urge you to raise the American flag this month and every day with pride! Speaking of raising the flag, Facebook will go public as one of the greatest images for what America represents – Opportunity. This is where one takes an idea to connect billions of people through digital channels and ultimately profits by its proliferation. And, now you can buy popularity on the site. A Facebook spokesperson confirmed last month the “pay to play” test going on in New Zealand. Capitalism at its best! The service Facebook provides are numerous, from reconnecting lifelong friends to fostering business

transactions and it has even been credited for the rise of liberty in countries once dominated by dictators. Let’s hope it also serves a catalyst for positive change toward peace and global collaborations to bring opportunities for all humanity. After all, isn’t this the aspiration of all fathers for their children? Happy Father’s Day – As Always – Enjoy the Lifestyle! Jim Norton President & Publisher Lifestyle Publications

June marks the beginning of family travel season. If you’re like us when you hit the road, you want to see something different, not just the usual tourist haunts. Enter http://atlasobscura.com/, a website designed and curated to share the hidden sites of cities you may be visiting. This endlessly fascinating and well curated site will enable you to dazzle your friends when you suggest some off the beaten path destinations. Even if you “staycation,” Altas Obscura can make you seem like an expert. The site has more than a dozen offbeat Florida locations to explore. Our favorite: “The Skunk Ape Research Headquarters” in the Everglades. Dave Shealy is the Jane Goodall of the Florida Everglades. Shealy has spent his entire life studying a smelly hominid cryptid known as the Skunk Ape, and has established the official Skunk Ape Research Center. So what is a Skunk Ape? Think of Florida’s version of Big Foot. Does it exist? That’s for you to decide, but you may want to visit Dave Shealy first. He can be found in Ochopee, Florida. Until next month.

Summertime is here, which means that it’s time to decide on your beach reading list. If you’re looking for inspiration, look no further than a sensational new book entitled “What Do You Want To Do Before You Die?” Jonnie Penn, Dave Lingwood, Duncan Penn and Ben Nemtin – collectively known as The Buried Life have written a stunning book that is sweeping the nation. Their live appearances at schools across the country have become a YouTube sensation as people of all ages share what they would like to accomplish before leaving this Earth. Answers range from having Morgan Freeman read them a bedtime story to ending human trafficking. The Buried Life team wrote the book to prove that four ordinary guys can achieve their bucket lists and inspire others to live their dreams. The Buried Life is so confident that you will love their book that they are willing to buy it back if you don’t like it and they’ll even throw in a t- shirt for your trouble. Now that’s confidence. What Do You Want To Do Before You Die? Is an illustrated collection of your wildest dreams. Two hundred of the most moving, imaginative, amusing, and thought-provoking things to do before you die are brought to life through handmade art curated by Dave, Duncan, Jonnie and Ben—the founders of The Buried Life. These four regular guys are on a mission to complete a list of 100 things before they die, and for every item they accomplish, they help a total stranger do something on his or her own to-do list. Peppered throughout the book are lessons, secrets, and stories that come from five years of asking millions worldwide: What do you want to do before you die? Without spoiling the book, their wish list includes playing basketball with President Obama (done), throwing out the first pitch at a Major League Baseball game and delivering a baby. Available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other fine book dealers. www. theburiedlifebook.com

Hundreds Join Longtime ACS Volunteer, David Singer for Jail and Bail Luncheon BY KEVIN LANE

Renowned Hollywood attorney David W. Singer hosted the organizational luncheon and where the committee was formed to plan this year’s annual Jail and Bail event, an occasion that has become synonymous with tremendous generosity and fun, benefitting the American Cancer Society. The luncheon was held May 2, 2012 at the Airport Sheraton in Fort Lauderdale. Scores of professionals, local politicians, and business leaders from Broward County, North MiamiDade and Southern Palm Beach Counties attended. The luncheon was highlighted by Honorary Chair Jason Taylor, a recently retired Miami Dolphin great. The Sponsors include Countyline Chiropractic, BrandsMart and Lipton Toyota. Singer has chaired Jail and Bail for more than 20 years, and is responsible for raising more than $2.4 million dollars for the American Cancer Society. The event has developed its own unique mechanism for raising money, while the participants have a great time doing it. Singer picks

14

people to form his “parole board”. They, in turn, with some instruction, are taught how to find “jail birds.” Volunteers on the “parole board” may have their worst enemy or best friend arrested and thrown in jail for this good cause. It is the “jailbirds” who make the calls from jail to get ACS pledges. If they meet their bail, they get out. Many are having such a blast, they don’t want to go! This year, Singer has targeted a goal of $200,000. Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti and State Attorney Mike Satz have become staples of Jail and Bail, and once again will participate in the excitement involving the resources of their sizable offices. Lamberti, a cancer survivor, has been an important part of the event for the past five years, having served as the Honorary Chair in the past. Satz, also a former Honorary Chair, has been an irreplaceable part of Jail and Bail for the past 12 years. “We are eager to get started. There is a lot of money to raise this year,” said Singer. “It will be gratifying to

those people that sign up to help. Al Lamberti and Mike Satz are invaluable to this event, which continues to grow each year. Jason Taylor, a sports legend in South Florida, and a certain NFL Hall of Famer, will be a huge help. He is truly one of a kind, and it is great that he is lending his name to this important cause.”

people WINING AND DINING AT CASA D’ANGELO or nearly 14 years, culinary maestro Angelo Elia has been warmly embracing diners and serving up authentic Tuscan cuisine in his cozy yet sophisticated flagship restaurant, Casa D’Angelo. It isn’t just his friendly smile or delectable Italian dishes (most of them inspired by his mama) that keeps locals and visitors flocking to this hidden gem located on Federal Highway, but also the impressive award-winning collection of more than 20,000 Italian and American wines. Since wine is a pivotal part of the dining experience at Casa D’Angelo, Chef Elia works closely with his head sommelier Koen Kersemens to acquire a special collection of reds and whites, many quite rare, but all displayed in temperature-controlled wine rooms with glass panels for easy viewing. Wine novices fear not – the sommelier and staff are very educated and able to offer a variety of pairing options of both old world selections and more unique small production varietals. It’s this combination of service and variety that has won the restaurant’s internationally renowned wine program Wine Spectator’s “Best of Award of Excellence” every year consecutively since 2000. “A great Italian supper is about all the senses working together and a meal’s not a meal without a good glass of wine,” says Elia with his signature smile. Casa D’Angelo is located at 1201 North Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. (954) 564-1234 www. casa-d-angelo.com

21ST CENTURY LEARNING AT ITS BEST…

UNIVERSITY SCHOOL i i STUDENTS LEAD BY EXAMPLE

BY KEVIN LANE

University School of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has long been known as one of the finest private schools in South Florida, if not the nation. Founded in 1971, University School puts the “college” in college preparatory school. A private, independent, pre-K through 12th grade school located on the campus of NSU, University School is one of a few schools of its kind in the U.S. “This puts University School in a class all its own, with its students – diverse, determined and fully engaged in their education – uniquely poised to excel,” headmaster, Dr. Jerome Chermak explained. One of the most unique facets of a University School experience is their school’s relationship with Nova Southeastern University. Students have access to the NSU library, the

20

largest in the state of Florida, to do research and study. They also have the opportunity to hear NSU

“UNIVERSITY SCHOOL’S UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP WITH NSU FLOWS BOTH WAYS,” HEADMASTER CHERMAK SAID. “NSU UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS INTERN AT THE SCHOOL, WHILE MANY UNIVERSITY SCHOOL TEACHERS – 75 PERCENT OF WHOM HAVE ADVANCED DEGREES – CONCURRENTLY TEACH AT THE GRADUATE LEVEL AT NSU.” professors speak on a variety of topics; conduct individual research projects with NSU faculty mentors; engage in

mock trials with law school students and professors; and much more “University School’s unique relationship with NSU flows both ways,” headmaster Chermak said. “NSU undergraduate and graduate students intern at the school, while many University School teachers – 75 percent of whom have advanced degrees – concurrently teach at the graduate level at NSU.” Preparing students for the 21st century is a core component for both teachers and students. Students are motivated to excel and teachers in Pre-K through 12th grade “… prepare students to lead in the 21st century.” Three University School seniors dish and tell and demonstrate their ability to lead by example, empower their peers, and find the best in themselves by pursuing every available opportunity.

Matthew Linn was recently accepted to Brown University. He’s the captain of his school’s Speech and Debate team, which has been his main focus in high school, and a member of the National, Math, Spanish, Science and English Honor Societies. In addition, he was named a National Merit Finalist, National Forensics League All-American, and an AP Scholar with Distinction. “I have an amazing, loving family. My parents are always helping me become the best person that I can be,” Matthew said. Matthew has been playing piano for the past decade, and when time permits, he loves kayaking. With an interest in travel and eventually living abroad, he’s becoming fluent in Spanish and is studying Chinese.

Molly Moreau, an AP Scholar and Broward County Science Fair winner, was accepted to Vanderbilt University. She plans to study Communications/Public Relations, and wants to be involved with the music industry. “My parents have always felt that education is the best gift a parent can give a child.” Her close knit family are avid readers. “So much can be learned through books,” she added. Molly is passionate about her volunteer work with A.H.L.E. orphanage in Honduras and has made seven trips there. Sixty-five abandoned and abused boys live there. “They have taught me so much about myself… they are an inspiration,” Molly said. Molly has taken dance lessons since she was two and is the President of Innovations Dance Company and Dance Honor Society.

Jessica Moore has been at University School for 12 years and was accepted to Emory University. With inspiration and encouragement from her Aunt Talia, Jessica has decided to pursue a major in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology. “My parents taught me from an early age that a good education is a person's most valuable attribute,” she said… which might explain why she is a Riley Science Award Recipient and an AP Scholar with Honor. Her parents are professional musicians and instilled a love of music. As a member of the Florida Youth Orchestra, Jessica has achieved Superior Ratings at Piano and Violin Soloist Competitions at District and State Levels for the past five years.

While historically University School has been a vibrant hub of academic and artistic talent, its recent addition of several sports programs – and their team successes thus far – rounds out this one-of-a-kind learning environment. A case in point is the Soccer team, boasting a 2011 state championship. Additionally, their Speech and Debate team ranks among the top one percent nationwide, multiple students were

honored with Emmy Awards for their world-class video productions, Middle and Upper School students won more than 60 Scholastic Art Awards and University School students won Best Build Design at last year’s VEX Robotics Competition. For more information about University School, call (954) 262-4506 or visit uschool. nova.edu. The school is at 3375 S.W. 75th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

PINE CREST SCHOOL

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT... i i Martina Fouquet Pine Crest School www.Pinecrest.edu

Known for turning common academic topics “inside out” during classroom discussion, Martina is a top-tier math student with a penchant for singing Broadway. Or is she a promising actress and ballerina on the pre-med track? Indeed, Martina is all of these things. She thanks Pine Crest School for allowing her to be herself, and excel outside the box. “Pine Crest is a school of intellectual thinking. There are no limits,” said Martina. “You walk around on campus and students aren’t talking about something on TV last night. You will hear conversations like, ‘Did you hear about the presidential campaign or some new scientific research?’ There is a mutual respect for one another.” Martina balances a course load heavy with AP classes, sings in the chorus, and performs in principal roles in most of Pine Crest’s plays and musicals. She is in constant motion and she manages to earn top marks in all of her classes. She traveled with her classmates to the American High School Theater Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2009, and has since performed in the fall production of “Twelve Angry Jurors,” the ballet “Coppelia,” and this November’s ballet production of “A Christmas Carol.” Martina also is very involved in working with Pine Crest’s sister school Three Little Flowers, in Petit-Goave, Haiti. She is a member of Pine Crest’s Black Students’ Association, and she is an active member of the anti-bullying team “Words That Hurt,” a school-wide program coordinated by Pine Crest’s Diversity office. Martina will study humanities and pre-med at Princeton University. To learn more about Pine Crest’s Upper School, go to: http://vimeo.com/channels/248920.

i i Sam Nemiroff Pine Crest School www.Pinecrest.edu

Something about the French horn “speaks” to senior Sam Nemiroff, who has played the complex and often misunderstood instrument for almost nine years. Sam, who also plays trumpet, said he is much more comfortable with the French horn because the instrument demands a certain depth of musicality that is not always appreciated by the masses. “It kind of defines what kind of musician I am and it is different from other brass instruments because there are nuances that make it so much more complex,” said Sam, a science scholar, musician, and classical music composer. The “mellow” brass instrument suits Sam well, as he is placed among a select few in the country who have received the Young Fine Arts Merit Award, which measures mastery of musicianship at the Upper School level. Sam’s love for the musical arts is only one aspect of his focused School career. He also is a member of Pine Crest School’s award-winning Upper School Science Research Team. Sam recently was named a 2012 Intel Semi-finalist for his research entitled, “The Risk of Microbial Keratitis from Contaminated Eyewash Stations,” which was conducted at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute under the direction of Dr. Darlene Miller. Sam’s research confirmed the presence of the pathogens in two-thirds of the water he collected from laboratories along the East coast. He said he is very honored by the recognition he has received at Pine Crest School. Sam will major in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology (MCDB) at Yale University this fall. To learn more about Pine Crest’s Upper School, go to:http://vimeo.com/ channels/248920.

BY JOANNA MAZEWSKI

I

f you’ve been hitting the tennis court lately but just can’t seem to get past the same errors you’ve been making against your opponents or are looking to improve your game, we’ve got good news for you: Director of Tennis for the City of Fort Lauderdale Director of TennisSusan Krowitz has the top 10 tips to help you improve your game and hopefully make your time on the court as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. Whether you are an intermediate player looking for new ways to advance or consider yourself a more experienced tennis pro, these tips can help you build more player confidence and effectiveness on the court.

6 7 8

Think about your opponent’s weaknesses and how you can exploit them.

Use lobs, angles and drop shots to get your opponent out of position.

If playing doubles, have a positive demeanor with your doubles partner. Never make them feel badly about missing a shot.

9 10

Play percentage tennis—get your first serve in and pick your spots to be aggressive. More important than anything else, have FUN!

1

Arrive at your tennis game early, leaving yourself time to stretch and prepare for your match.

2

Clear your mind of the day’s activities (forget about work, the kids, etc.) and focus on your game.

3 4

Keep the ball in play. Most points are lost by making errors, not won by hitting winners.

Balance your tennis by playing competitive matches, taking lessons and playing in social games. By varying what you do, you can work on your game and not get stale.

5

Don’t let your opponent get in a rhythm, vary the pace and spin on your shots. Keep them off balance and guessing.

8 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN Who is the author of the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin? Well, Benjamin Franklin, of course… What better to appreciate the excitement and challenges of our country’s formative years than to read the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin! Although Franklin was born a little over 300 years ago, his life continues to be an inspiration and his advice is timeless. Wikipedia wrote that “…this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Used paperback on Amazon start at a penny (a penny saved is a penny earned, mind you…) and via Kindle it’s free.

6

A CAPITAL FOURTH A Capital Fourth… is another great tradition, particularly for those who enjoy just staying home in the evening… You can tune into PBS Channel 2 to enjoy the fabulous and very patriotic concert and watching the “… best fireworks of any celebration.” Touted as “America’s Premier Birthday Party,” an audience favorite and a highlight of the evening is the rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” complete with live cannon fire provided by the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery. The show, which starts at 8:00 p.m. will feature stunning visuals of the National Mall and the memorials and monuments representing the ideals underpinning our democracy. Some Fireworks Trivia… Did you know the fireworks have names?? Here’s a few… Peony - the most common type of firework, the peony shell type is a spherical break of colored stars that burn without a tail effect; Chrysanthemum - a spherical break of colored stars, similar to a peony, but with stars that leave a visible trail of sparks; and Crossette a shell containing several large stars that travel a short distance before breaking apart into smaller stars, leaving a crisscross effect.

9

BARBECUE This doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out… We’re not sure if the family and friends Bar-B-Q is a tradition started by our Founding Fathers, but it sure is a great way to celebrate… and don’t forget the birthday cake for dessert!

10

IDENTITY THIEVES ARE OUT TO STEAL YOUR LIFESTYLE THIS SUMMER THANK GOODNESS IT’S SUMMER AND YOU’RE GOING ON VACATION – NO TROUBLES, NO PROBLEMS, IT’S ALL GOOD. NOT REALLY; ALL AROUND YOU IDENTITY THIEVES ARE BUSY CONSPIRING TO PLUNDER YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION. BY BRIAN BIENKOWSKI

dentity thieves don’t take vacations; they wait for you to plan a trip and then act. It’s devious and unfortunately a proven winner. Why? Because it’s human nature to relax while on vacation and forget about “reality.” Thieves know it and they thrive on it. So the question is how can you protect yourself while simultaneously enjoying your summer retreat?

JUNE 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

START PREPARATIONS BEFORE YOU SET OUT ON YOUR ADVENTURE. Contact your bank and credit card companies and inform them of your trip. Give them your destination and the length of your stay. They can then observe your account to verify if your cards are being used at another location. For example, John Stewart of Coral Springs never contacted his credit card company and he

will provide the authorities with valuable information. One other note of caution to the many social media users out there, don’t publicize your travel plans to all your friends and relatives on Facebook or Twitter. It’s careless. Even with all the online security settings and other safeguards in place. You’re just inviting trouble because you don’t really know who’s looking at your posts, especially with all the trolls snooping around; it’s an open invitation to rob your house. Identity thieves quickly adapt and reinvent new ways to steal your personal information, your money and your lifestyle. They are diligent but these simple tips should make them look elsewhere for another victim. Just remember, be prepared, be careful and stay alert – then have fun.

These devices capture your personal information once you swipe your card. Check the machine carefully or ask a manager at the place you are staying for a trusted spot to withdraw money. If you plan on taking your laptop don’t access personal accounts at the local coffee shop with internet capability. Most Wi-Fi hot spots don’t have security. The same goes for hotel computers or computers at internet cafés. Identity thieves use software such as keyloggers, which track your keystrokes and steal your personal information. Jan Archers can attest to it. “I was relaxing and checking my bank account at the local coffee shop,” said Jan. “I never thought someone could steal my account number so easily and drain my account. I was in shock.” If you are staying in a hotel don’t leave any personal information out in the open. Lock it up in the safe. Also, make photocopies of all your key documents, such as your passport, plane tickets, hotel and reservations even your driver’s license and place them in the safe, too. What is your favorite date Bill night hotspot? I always love the Las Olas area and so many and of our local restaurants here in Ft. Lauderdale such as The Capital Grille, So Litas and Casa D’Angelo, being a few of my favorites. But I also love heading down to Miami Beach, The Design District or Lincoln Road. It’s usually not the place but the people you’re with that make it special. I always love attending the local charity events around town with great friends and associates as well. How would you describe yourself in one word? Passionate ......Very Passionate in everything I do. How do you stay involved in the community? I am the president of the Oakland Park Wilton Manors Council and board of directors member of the Ft. Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce and Habitat for Humanity. Feinberg with chil dren K Michael, ara, 25 21.

Where can you be found on your day/night off when you’re not with your children? Hiding out in my condo near the beach or a weekend getaway at one of Ft. Lauderdale’s great hotels. What are you grateful for? I am so grateful and blessed to have my health, a very close family with three brothers and lots of friends, a great business celebrating our 28th year, and most importantly the ability to help others and always “pay it forward”. How do you juggle being a bachelor… and a father? It’s actually much easier now that my children are older. I take it one day at a time though. I’m very involved in my children’s lives and I’m there for them for anything they need. The kids always come first. I’m a 24/7 kind of guy, so whatever it takes is my attitude. I always have time to help my kids – listen and advise … especially when they want my advice !!!

What would the perfect day spent with your daughter include? The perfect day with Lindsay would be spent out on the water fishing, tubing or a mix of both. What is your favorite date night spot? Well date night would be a nice dinner (Capital Grille or Sushi would be my favorite pick). Date day would be scuba diving and a nice burger, fries and ice cream afterward.

How do you stay involved in the community? I volunteer at my daughter’s school, Heron Heights Elementary, as a room dad. I am an officer in the Seminole Nation Indian Princess Aztec Tribe (YMCA dad and daughter program) and most importantly, I sit on the Board of Directors of LifeNet4Families formally known as the Cooperative Feeding Program of Broward County, whose purpose is to reduce the pain and suffering of individuals and families in poverty. Where can you be found on your day/ night off when you’re not with your children? When I do not have my daughter I am usually either volunteering, traveling or out on my boat fishing or scuba diving. I do love to go out for dinner so in the evening I am usually out somewhere in Downtown Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale or South Beach. How do you juggle being a bachelor... and a father? I have my daughter about 45-50% of the time and I am usually working a lot as well. My evenings without my daughter are my time to socialize. I also typically have two weekends a month without my daughter so that gives me time to go out. I am very involved with my daughter so I always make sure anyone that I date understands this and knows that if the relationship takes on a further direction this is my main priority.

DO YOU HAVE AN

OPTIMAL THYROID? THYROID HORMONE RESISTANCE IS MORE COMMON THAN PEOPLE REALIZE.

DR. KENNETH WOLINER Board Certified Family Physician 9325 Glades Road, Suite 104 Boca Raton, FL 33434 561-314-0950 holisticfamilymed.com

“I HAVE TRIED EVERY DIET KNOWN TO MAN (OR MOMS) THESE LAST FEW YEARS – TO NO AVAIL.” Alyson continued to tell me her story. “For example, this past summer, my best friend flew me to their home in Sonoma for an entire month. We ate nothing but organic everything, lean protein, I drank 150 ounce-plus of water a day and did a high intensity workout every morning mixing up interval training with boot camp at her gym. In exactly 30 days – I lost a grand total of THREE pounds. I didn’t even lose the initial ‘water weight’ everyone else loses.” I empathized, “It’s hard to stay motivated with minimal results.” “I’m willing to starve myself, if that would work. I even did two rounds of hCG. My wallet’s lighter, but that’s about it.” “The FDA recently published a website, www.fda.gov/hcgdiet, detailing how hCG diet products are illegal, and how restrictive diets such as that one can cause electrolyte disturbances,

an irregular heartbeat and are potentially fatal.” I continued, “But looking at your diet history, I don’t think the problem is one of eating too much.” “Dr. Woliner, what else could it be? I have a friend that blew up taking Abilify for her depression, and another while on Actos for diabetes, but I’m not on any medications.” “It’s true that many drugs have weight gain as a common side effect [1]. But there are other causes of weight gain. With your other symptoms of cold intolerance, fatigue, and constipation, I’m thinking that you have an untreated thyroid condition [2].” “I begged my other doctors to treat me for that, but they all said no.” “Some doctors focus too much on lab tests without considering the patient’s history and physical exam findings [3]. Thyroid hormone resistance is more common than people realize.” Alyson sat with a puzzled look on her face. “So, even if these doctors said my tests were normal, I might still have a thyroid problem? [4]” “The word ‘normal’ has many meanings. There is a difference between ‘common’ and ‘optimal’ [5]. Rather than using a range that includes people who are overweight and being treated for high cholesterol and other conditions, perhaps it would be better to use narrower ranges of persons who feel ‘dandy’ [6].”

“Does anyone even use that word anymore?” “My practice is built on patientto-patient referrals. Just liking my bedside manner is not enough to convince your friends to see me. You have to glow. So yes, I do plan on making you feel dandy.” After finishing Alyson’s physical exam, my staff used our Korr indirect calorimetry machine to measure her metabolic rate [7]. “You’re at ‘minus 20%’. That’s one of slowest metabolism’s I’ve ever seen!” “How do we fix that?” “I use a holistic approach that combines behavior changes, diet, exercise, supplements, and of course medications [8,9]. I prefer to use T3 based drugs as they have been shown to cause significantly more weight loss than T4 drugs such as Synthroid alone [10].” As I ramped up Alyson’s dose of thyroid medication, her fatigue and other symptoms began to resolve. To be on the safe side, I periodically rechecked her EKG and bone density, which remained normal [11]. “Dr. Woliner, your scale says I only lost 49 pounds, but at home, naked, I’m down 51!” Dr. Kenneth Woliner is a boardcertified family physician in private practice in Boca Raton. The ďŹ eld of executive stafďŹ ng and recruitment is a very competitive one. Despite being one of the leading South Florida executive recruiting ďŹ rms, our client, Steven Douglas Associates, knew that in order to stay current, they had to enhance their online presence. In fact, when he came to us, Chairman and CEO, Steve Sadaka, said, “We’ve been in the executive recruiting ďŹ eld in South Florida for 27 years, so we’re really well known with local clients. We knew, however, that new clients and people coming from out of town would be searching Google; at the time we had basically no presence on Google.â€? Steven Douglas Associates’ solution? Partner with Exults to establish a signiďŹ cant, complementary online presence. Sadaka wanted to attract new clients moving in from out of town and he also wanted to upgrade his website to reect his company’s professionalism

and accomplishments. “Exults tailored their fee-structure and programs to our needs, rather than demanding an expensive retainer, up-front. Key for me was getting my site updated and pushed to the ďŹ rst page of Google. Eventually, we expanded [our services package] and Exults was able to start with what I needed and stay within our budget.â€? Exults developed a campaign strategy which would give Steven Douglas Associates the visibility they were looking for and a custom-made website that better reected the prestige of the Steven Douglas brand. We launched a strong backlinking push with relevant, keywordrich blogs, articles and press releases. The Exults team added features which allowed potential clients in different industries to submit a form directly to the head of that division; making the process easier for users and saving Steven Douglas Associates valuable administrative time. The site was optimized in conjunction with the selected keywords and thriving back-linking campaign; causing its relevance in the eyes of Google to skyrocket. The result? An attractive, user-friendly website on the ďŹ rst page of Google. Before long, Steven Sadaka

began to see signiďŹ cant returns on his investment. The organic trafďŹ c on the Steven Douglas Associates website jumped an impressive 89% from January 1, 2011 to January 1, 2012. The dramatic increase in trafďŹ c brought with it qualiďŹ ed leads which converted largely into sales. Sadaka says, “We track our progress carefully. In the last four months, we’ve generated over $100,000 in fees from clients who found us on the internet.â€? After being in business for nearly 30 years, Steven Douglas Associates was already a major player in their industry; the company’s online presence needed to reect their existing prestige. A professionally designed, streamlined website and high position on the search engine results page provided the recruiting ďŹ rm the boost they were looking for; almost doubling their internet trafďŹ c in just one year. Sadaka has since then expanded the list of services he receives from Exults and is pleased with his continued online momentum. Steven Douglas Associates continues its partnership with Exults; and we are both looking forward to fresh levels of success in the coming year. In one short, easy, very comfortable treatment, you can experience a marked improvement in the appearance of ďŹ ne lines, skin tightening and wrinkles for up to six months! We are seeing wonderful results in as few as 1-4 treatments. The technology of the PellevĂŠ system sets it apart from other wrinkle-reducing treatments. When you are treated with PellevĂŠ, a more focused Radio Frequency energy is delivered to areas of the skin where elasticity is lacking and lines have begun to develop. This energy heats the skin, causing it to begin producing collagen. Collagen is a key component in healthy, toned-looking skin. It delivers heat to deep layers of the skin where fat resides. This “controlled focused energyâ€? spurs the contraction of these deep tissues for an overall smoothing effect. The heat energy also stimulates the production of new collagen over time, resulting in ďŹ rmer, tighter, smoother skin. The practitioner adjusts the strength of the delivered energy based on feedback from the patient throughout the session. The PellevĂŠ system requires no anesthesia and treatment can be conducted in as little as 15 minutes per area. We simply, apply a thin layer

of gel to your face prior to treatment. Most patients experience only a warming sensation on the skin when the PellevĂŠ hand piece is applied. Patients often report that immediately after treatment skin feels tighter similar to Botox. When it takes effect, most patients often experience immediate results, and a reduction in the visibility of wrinkles at the treatment sites. Over the course of the next six months, you will continue to see smoother, more beautiful skin. While many patients see results after just one session of PellevĂŠ, we may recommend multiple treatments to help you achieve your optimal aesthetic goals. The total number of treatments can vary and is based on your individual skin needs. It takes up to two months for the full effects of PellevĂŠ to be seen. There is no downtime or side effects except the ocassional very mild swelling or redness which normally resides in an hour. SAVE YOUR BUSINESS MONEY TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT YOUR MERCHANT ACCOUNT TODAY!

Selecting the right company to process your credit card transactions can be a very frustrating experience, however one South Florida company has emerged from the pack, bringing clarity to what many merchants see as a very confusing industry. Boca Raton based FlashBanc LLC has quickly become one of the fastest growing and most successful merchant processing companies in the Nation. Scott Roy, FlashBanc’s vice president of marketing offers four areas where your business can save money and drive dollars to your bottom line. Don’t Buy the “Low Rate” Approach Ricky Gustafson of South Florida based, American Security and Fire Alarms Systems Inc. explains just how frustrating the process was for them, “We switched processors several times over the past 10 years, usually allured by the promise of lower rates. When FlashBanc analyzed our previous merchant processing statement, we found that what we though was our rate was actually only being applied to a small fraction of our transactions. FlashBanc’s plan saved us $200 a month, a meaningful number for our business. We’ve been with FlashBanc for over two years now, and they continue to

52

impress me with their support and professionalism.” Beware of Hidden Fees Hidden fees are a common source of frustration for merchants. Watch out for maintenance fees, setup fees, customer service fees, reprogramming fees or any other fee that just doesn’t look right to you. Watch Out for the Bank Many businesses default to processing with their traditional bank, which typically results in higher processing fees. Gustafson says, “We processed for several years through our bank, because we just assumed it was the most cost effective method. We quickly learned that they weren’t able to meet our service needs, and that they were actually farming our business out to a third-party processor.” Roy adds, “Banks aren’t credit card processing companies. If you are processing with your bank, you are almost certainly paying too much.”

Don’t Lease Equipment Roy states, “Never lease your equipment as this is an extremely expensive route to go. Every day we run across businesses that are leasing a $175 credit card machines for $39 a month over 36 months.

Yes, you read correctly; they are paying $1,400 for a rather inexpensive piece of equipment that they have to give back at some point. Buy your equipment if at all possible. In fact, FlashBanc actually offers our customers free terminals!” Choose wisely. Partnering with the right merchant processing company will enable you to custom-tailor a plan that will reduce your fees and drive profit to your bottom line. The vast majority of businesses are paying too much for their credit card processing fees. Is yours? FlashBanc’s focus on savings and service has led to a stellar growth and the highest customer retention rates in the industry. NYY Steak DELIVERS SEASONED TASTES IN A CHAMPIONSHIP ATMOSPHERE BY RANDI PRESS

THE OPEN GLASS KITCHEN ALLOWS YOU TO ENJOY A VIEW OF THE VARIOUS CHEFS CREATING THE SEASONED TASTES FOR THE EVENING. CHEF WILLIAM PHILLIPS HAS HELPED NYY STEAK OVER THE LAST SEVEN YEARS IN TAMPA AS THE BUTCHER CUTTING ALL THE VARIOUS MEAT SELECTIONS.

54

Developed for the sophisticated, discriminating fine-diner, NYY Steak delivers an extraordinary and entertaining experience from the moment you enter the restaurant. The concept of NYY Steak was founded in The Bronx, New York in the spring of 2009 as the premier fine dining destination of the New Yankee Stadium, in its inaugural season. The concept was established as a joint venture between the New York Yankees and Seminole Gaming Entertainment. The Yankees are the premiere sports franchise in the world and hold a record 27 world baseball championships; The Seminole tribe is America’s only unconquered tribe. NYY Steak is fashioned after Seminole Gaming’s award winning Council Oak Steaks & Seafood restaurants in their casinos in Tampa and Hollywood, Florida. The walk from the north entrance of the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino into the front of the restaurant was designed to transport you to the entry way of Yankee Stadium. The thought and design that went into creating the visual was absolutely inventive. A New York Yankee true encounter here in Broward County. The entrance once inside is understated. The cocktail lounge is modern, inviting and leads you to the hostess area where a glass butcher shop and knife wall are featured. As a purveyor of U.S.D.A. Prime 21 to 28 day dry-aged beef, NYY serves steaks, chops, prime-rib, chicken, fresh seafood and shellfish offerings of shrimp, crab, oysters, clams, lobsters and fin fish.

JUNE 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

Once inside, dark woods, classic booth and table settings create an ambiance that is comfortable and clubby without being intimidating. The open glass kitchen allows you to enjoy a view of the various chefs creating the seasoned tastes for the evening. Chef William Phillips takes great pride in the choices displayed in the glass butcher shop. He is now the restaurant chef creating the menu locally beginning in February when the establishment opened. Your eyes can also encounter the pastry chef, Mark Weideman creating desserts that will entice your sweet need and excite your palate. There is a beautiful glass view into the wine cellar that will inspire you to review their finest wine offerings. And, the infamous Yankee Signature Walls and classic Yankee images throughout can maintain one’s attention and encourage storytelling all evening. We are greeted by Petrus Louis Turcano, the general manager from Romania and our sommelier along with Earl, our server who knows the history about the joint venture and all things NYY Steak. Both are genuine in their approach and immediately share what’s top on the menu to enjoy and pair. He mentions the New Zealand Lamb, domestic and dryaged rubbed with roasted garlic herbs and sea salt placed on a tomato risotto with fresh mint leaves. Already we lean forward with interest. “Leave room for the flaming volcano,” Earl states. “You absolutely must taste it…it’s covered in heath crunch and 151 proof Rum is poured on top.” I am now focused on having dessert first of course!

i i

The experience becomes more nostalgic when your plate is set. The Yankees have retired fifteen numbers for sixteen players, the most in Major League Baseball. Each dinner plate at NYY Steak has a retired number on it. And the tasting begins. A basket of pretzel bread with white cheddar cheese and whole grain mustard, asiago crisps and cinnamon with sugar signature crisps accompanied by salted butter is placed on the table. Delicious! Tuna tartar, beef (sirloin) carpaccio, oyster rockefeller with sambuca are placed in the middle of the table. My mouth watering and eyes dancing found my two favorites quickly. Colossal stuffed barbeque shrimp wrapped in bacon placed over cilantro popcorn blended with strips of bacon will give your taste buds a fantastic, tangy experience while the scallops with blackberry reduction are crispy on top and melt like butter in your mouth. My two favorites will become your “must haves!” But, if you are a beef carpaccio fan, the seracha (Vietnamese hot sauce) served razor thin with toast points will kick your heartbeat up a pace! There are several salads that are wonderful but don’t miss the head of baby iceberg served with crumbled blue cheese, bacon and French dressing accompanied by a shot of a vodka martini marinated blue cheese stuffed olive. Entrees included twin South African lobster tails broiled with lemon butter, Chilean sea bass with a red wine reduction garnished with micro greens that was crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside served over a wonderful risotto. The dryaged twenty one to twenty eight day, twenty ounce center cut NY strip almost looks like a filet. It’s flavorful,

tender, charred and buttery. But, this can’t rival the “unsurpassed” winner of the evening, the long bone cowboy Ribeye “branded” with your initials in the bone. Crispy on the outside, tender, juicy on the inside it is the signature steak to experience. Coated in peanut oil, the chef explains they do not trim this at all therefore the flavor remains…and it is beyond words. But don’t take my word for it, taste it for yourself! The sides accompanying the entrees are worthy of tasting. The corn is fire roasted with fresh bacon, sweet cream and herbs. The mushroom buttons are touched with olive oil, garlic and rosemary herbs. And the creamed spinach is combined with shallots and lemon pepper. All the sides are full of flavor and are enough to share. Remember I mentioned the flaming volcano for dessert? This is a show and is worth tasting. If you want something more all-American, try the over-sized chocolate chip cookies filled with vanilla ice cream accompanied with fudge on the plate, sprinkles, raspberry garnished and touched with fresh whipped cream. It’s a mixture of everything wonderful. Don’t hesitate to order the chocolate blackout cake if you are a chocolate lover. This is sinful and enough to take home for a mid-night treat! I don’t want to leave you without sharing two fantastic options from the lounge menu. They can be ordered for dinner, but they are not featured on the menu. The lobster sandwich is crisp on the outside and filled with chunks of lobster served with tomato soup. It is fantastic! The NY aged steak sandwich with fries is served with balsamic ketchup. It is my new favorite condiment! This is great to share even as an appetizer. The experience at NYY Steak will be a treat whether you are a Yankee fan or fancy other sports. The chef’s are approachable, the wait staff are impeccable and the cool vibe will make the experience worthy of more than one visit. For more information, seminolecoconutcreekcasino.com/ dining/nyy-steak, 5550 NW 40th Street, Coconut Creek FL 33073. Open for dinner :Sunday, Monday, Thursday: 5pm-10pm, Friday & Saturday: 5pm-11pm with late night at Legends Lounge open until 2am.

AND

another thing... EYES AND EARS ARE EVERYWHERE BY BRUCE TURKEL

Buck’s Restaurant in Woodside, California, is ground zero for venture capitalists that invest in technology. I’m in town to give a presentation in Silicon Valley and stopped by this diner to eat breakfast and drink in some of the local culture. Like lots of small, family-owned breakfast spots, Buck’s has a vast collection of local memorabilia hanging on the wall. Except where you might expect display cases of trout flies or Harley Davidson parts, Buck’s walls are festooned with silicon chips and tech discoveries. The people look different here, too. Most are young men, conscientiously scruffy in their North Face fleece vests and expensive Italian eyeglasses. The few women who are here are also young and fresh-faced, and look like they just strolled off a ski slope. Almost everyone is on their smartphone or tablet. Those who aren’t are sharing a presentation on their MacBook Pros. And everyone’s talking pretty loudly. But unlike coffee shops in New York, where everyone talks about financial schemes, or restaurants in LA where the chatter is all about “the biz” (movies and entertainment), the talk here is all tech-related “speeds and feeds.” The couple in the booth next to me is a perfect example. The guy is in his late 30s, studiously underdressed with a severe case of bed head. His date, a bubbly blond in her 20s, is hanging on his every word and expressing her interest with staccato outbursts of self-conscious laughter. What caught my attention were the words he was using to keep her attention. Instead of the bon mots of typical seduction, his romancing was peppered with terms such as “milestone-based,” “seed relationships,” “mobile solutions,” “platforms,” and “self-partnering.” I’m not sure all of these are even real tech terms but she kept giggling appreciatively so his rap must have been working. The other thing he was doing to impress her was listing the various companies his venture firm has invested in. And here’s where it gets interesting: The logo embroidered on his jacket read “Azure Capital” and he was talking about one of their larger investments, an online video site called “TwitVid.” So with a few stabs on my web-enabled iPad we pulled up his company’s site and found his name and CV. His headshot confirmed that the guy on the screen and the guy on the make were the same. Are you following what just happened?

JUNE 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

Talk about loose lips sinking ships. Thanks to ubiquitous Internet information and a loud-mouthed Lothario, we were able to trace and substantiate an overheard rumor with real market confirmation. If I was a reporter, a competitor or a corporate spy looking for info, imagine what could have happened. If there were something in it for me or for my clients, I could have tweeted the information he discussed immediately or posted it online. Either way, it’s possible that his partners or his competition could have read about him and his secrets before he even got back to the office from breakfast. And with info aggregator sites such as TechCrunch and Mashable acting more and more like scandal site TMZ and actively scouring the web for upto-the-minute scoops, the info about Azure and TwitVid could’ve been worldwide before lunch. Luckily for my new friend, I have no interest in his business nor in publicly embarrassing him. But all of a sudden, people everywhere are armed with digital cameras and web-enabled devices that turn them into 24/7 Internet paparazzi and the worlds of business, news, and politics will never be the same. Gary Hart, Donna Rice and the Real Monkey Business were only the beginning. Soon television reality shows and whole Internet channels will be dedicated to unscripted, caughtin-the-act user-generated “gotcha” videos. This revelation suggests that not only should people be more circumspect about what they say and where they say it, but that new chances will continue to pop up for rumor-based marketing opportunities. Also, that formerly no-brainer branding vehicles such as logo-ed shirts and caps and vanity license plates should now be used judiciously because of their ability to give the cyber sleuth a quick and easy way to start their search. After all, most of us have secrets and skeletons we’d rather keep hidden in the closet. And today’s technology is going to make that harder and harder. Bruce is a branding expert who makes his clients’ brand experiences more valuable. He’s worked with great organizations including Discovery Channel, Baptist Health, MetCare, and Miami. He’s spoken at MIT, Harvard, and hundreds of conferences. He’s been on NPR and CNN and featured in The New York Times and Fast Company Magazine. He has published three books on advertising including Building Brand Value. You can reach Bruce at bturkel@turkel.info
