Get the lift you've been looking for with Restylane-L™ Injectable Gel and Perlane-L™ Injectable Gel The Restylane® Injectable Gel and Perlane® Injectable Gel you know and trust are combined with a local anesthetic (lidocaine) to help reduce discomfort.a

Nasolabial folds before. a

After 2 mL of Perlane-L Individual results may vary.

In clinical studies evaluating the Restylane family of products, Restylane-L® and Perlane-L® demonstrated less discomfort at injection and up to one hour later compared to Restylane and Perlane, respectively.

The Restylane family of products includes Restylane®, Restylane-L®, Perlane®, and Perlane-L®. These products can be used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane may also be used for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years. Ask your doctor which is right for you. Important Safety Considerations for the Restylane family of products Products in the Restylane family should not be used by people with previous bad allergies, particularly to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria, or by people with serious allergies to drugs that have previously required in-hospital treatment. These products should not be used by people with bleeding disorders. Products should not be injected anywhere except the skin, just under the skin (Perlane and Perlane-L only), or in the lips (Restylane only). Restylane-L and Perlane-L should not be used by anyone with a known allergy to lidocaine. Use at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. In these instances, product use could delay healing or make your skin problems worse. After treatment, you might

have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14 days in lips. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years. Rarely, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin. Although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur. If you have had facial cold sores before, an injection can cause an outbreak. To avoid bruising and bleeding, you should not use the products if you have recently used drugs that thin your blood or prevent clotting. Products should not be used during pregnancy, when breastfeeding, or in patients under 18 years for nasolabial folds. Treatment volume should be limited to 6.0 mL in wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, and limited to 1.5 mL per lip (Restylane only), as greater amounts significantly increase moderate and severe injection site reactions. The safety or effectiveness of treatment in areas other than nasolabial folds and lips (Restylane only) has not been established in controlled clinical studies. The Restylane family of products is available only through a licensed practitioner. Complete product and safety information is available at www.RestylaneUSA.com.

POLITICS – I-PHONES & BREAST CANCER AWARENESS Summer is coming to an end with cooler weather on the way. Students are back in school and the political season is beginning to heat up. And, new technology is the talk of the town as Apple may help grow the US GDP (Gross Domestic Product) with sales of its newest cellular phones. Last month, Hurricane Isaac had all the news stations broadcasting with round the clock coverage. As luck would have it, our cover story was on the Meteorologists who we watched every day. Who knew? In the end, South Florida dodged another Hurricane threat and the Gulf Coast actually fared better than expected. One nuisance we may not be able to avoid is the barrage of political ads coming after the Republican and Democratic Conventions. I must admit, I watched both conventions. Some speakers were impressive, while others actually disappointed. None really “made my day!” Neither gathering actually moved me to think this election cycle will be much different from those in the past. All I could ask is – What next? For those who can get past the negativity of the campaigns, there are the Presidential Debates. Three are scheduled this month – one here in South Florida at Lynn University - along with one Vice Presidential Debate. With recent world events increasing security concerns in addition to our current economic conditions domestically, both campaigns may finally be right when they profess – this may be the most important election of our lifetime! Therefore, be informed and vote with the best information available. Let’s pray for some divine intervention that the most prepared

6

and qualified people actually win. Speaking of winning, Steve Jobs must be beaming with pride from above, as Apple releases the new I-Phone 5. Sales are projected to be in the hundreds of millions within months. This product is so “hot” it is expected to improve US GDP by one percent on its own. This type of technology and innovation is just what our economy needs to be the catalyst for recovery. This month’s feature story is on Breast Cancer Awareness. Many of us are touched in one way or another, whether we know someone affected or if we ourselves are fighting. This is a cause which needs to be magnified, making people aware of the many programs and procedures to provide a better quality of life. You will meet several doctors who are leading the way in medical advances, early detection techniques and treatments. These physicians are some of the best, who are right here in South Florida. CC Scott wrote, “The human spirit

is stronger than anything that can happen to it.” May this be the mantra for those with the courage to face these challenges and the charge for those blessed with the talent and intelligence to pursue a cure! It’s the first month of the last quarter of the year. I hope you are on track to achieve all you’ve set out for yourself in the beginning of the year. If not, remember, “today is the first day of the rest of your life.” You have been given the chance to get up, so you are given the challenge to never give up. Take Action! And, Make Each Day Count! Have a Great Month and a Happy Halloween! As Always, Enjoy the Lifestyle!™

POWER TOOLS FOR CARVING PUMPKINS! Let’s face it, most men love power tools and now they, and their spouses, can unleash the fury of power tools on their pumpkins to make the most extreme Jack O’ Lantern on the block. Even the kids can join in the “fun.”

DREMEL 764-04 CORDLESS PUMPKIN CARVING KIT Check out the Dremel 764-04 Cordless Pumpkin Carving kit. As stated on the Dremel website: “the Pumpkin Carving Kit allows fast, easy carving of spectacularly sculpted pumpkins. Using the templates provided (or one of the thousands of pre-made templates available on the market), the Pumpkin Carving Kit makes carving intricate pumpkin designs as easy as tracing a drawing.” The features on the Dremel Cordless carver include: light weight and easily handled; cordless convenience; AA batteries to eliminate batter charging (not included); ten bonus carving templates; two speeds, 6,000 and 12,000 RPM for superior power; and a two year warranty. Accessories include: 191 high speed cutter, 6.0V Dremel alkaline cordless rotary tool and wrench. PUMPKIN MASTER’S POWER POKER AND SAW But that’s not the only tool you’ll need to create the most distinctive and radical Jack O’ Lantern. Try the Pumpkin Master’s Power Poker and Saw. It is the newest and quickest way to carve your pumpkin. This tool includes a battery operated saw with a replaceable saw attachment and a replaceable poker attachment, which makes carving a pumpkin like running a hot knife through butter. Requires 4 AA batteries (not included). PUMPKIN GUTTER And for the finale, don’t forget this pumpkin “gutter” drill attachment, created to help with the gooey mess inside the pumpkin. Just insert the attachment’s shaft into your drill chuck, just like a drill bit. Have a helper hold the pumpkin steady, then turn on your drill, and the attachment will loosen and grip the pumpkin goo making it easy to remove from the pumpkin. It’s also great for shaving down the inside of the pumpkin wall, which should be about ½ inch for carving.

This warm, misty ceramic-tiled room with heated individual seating thrones and a color-changing fiber optic ceiling is not to be missed. You will want to take deep cleansing breaths while you enjoy the aromatic atmosphere. The delicious smell of lavender fills the air and an iced towel is brought in at your request if that’s your pleasure. The suggestion is to leave the thermal areas periodically to cool down. You will now want to walk into the Igloo. The cool air and three Arctic Mist experiences await your arrival. Your choices include the menthol, mint or eucalyptus-enhanced by twinkling fiber optics. The Igloo constricts blood vessels and cools your system. This is brilliant! The Thermal Heated Loungers keep your muscles warm and relaxed as you lie back between thermal experiences. here is more hope e headed our way in Broward County! There are significant nt and exciting advancess in breast cancer technology ology and treatments at our local hospitals and healthcare facilities. ities. These advances, along with women performing self exams, have made an n impact in the decline of breast cancer mortality ality rates over the last ten years. Survivorship hip and new treatment options are worthy off a real celebration here in South Florida. Dr. David Robinson of University Hospital spital & Medical Center in Coral Springs says, “There are still social awareness issues sues when it comes to breast cancers even with all the wonderful work being done by a variety iety of organizations. If followed, The American rican Cancer Society’s guidelines for early detection tion of breast cancer improves the chances that hat cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and nd treated successfully.” Diagnosing earlier before symptoms occur through screening, cancers are more likely to be smaller and confined to the breast. The size of a cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the prognosis of a person with the disease. Additionally, most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year. More lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. Furthermore, genetic testing is available to help women determine if family history suggests a pattern for certain cancers. Dr. Robinson states, “Advances in genetic testing have become very valuable to patients who have multiple family members under the age of menopause who have been diagnosed with cancer.” Specific genetic tests such as the BRCA-I or BRCA-II are appropriate to offer a patient for early detection when the risk factors are present. cancer canc susceptibility GENE 1 and breast cancer susceptibility GENE 2. “With these tests, w tests we have learned that a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer is greatly increased if she inherits br this gene mutation.” Men with these mutations also have an increased risk of breast cancer. Dr. Robinson shares, “This genetic test is no longer only a blood test. Now we can simply swab the inside lining of the cheek and send the sample to the lab.” Genetic counseling is recommended before and after these types of tests are performed and there are a variety of options available to help a person manage their cancer risk. An additional genetic test called the Oncotype DX is noninvasive and performed on a small amount of the tissue removed during the original surgery lumpectomy, mastectomy, or core biopsy. Results provide the patient and their doctors more information about their specific tumor and allow them to devise a better treatment plan. This test provides information to assist in decisions whether or not to make chemotherapy part of their treatment plan and can also help doctors determine the likelihood of the cancer returning in the future, also known as recurrence.

“THERE ARE STILL SOCIAL AWARENESS ISSUES when it comes to breast cancers even with all the wonderful work being done by a variety of organizations. If followed, The American Cancer Society’s guidelines for early detection of breast cancer improve the chances that cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage.”

As you probably are aware, there are specific protocols used to fight cancer. The most common procedures to treat breast cancer are radiation and chemotherapy. Advancements in these therapies have fewer side effects on patients experiencing the treatments now, more than ever before. Chemotherapy has more severe side effects than radiation. This is because all the cells in the body may be affected by the drug being used. Radiation, on the other hand, is a therapy targeting only specific areas of the body affected by cancerous cell growth. Dr. Nicholas Tranakas of Broward Health Medical Center enthusiastically says, “Current s c r e e n i n g technologies can catch breast cancer much earlier than a decade ago. A test that is used when patients have something suspicious present in an MRI is called the Positron emission mammography (PEM). This is a form of positron emission tomography (PET) that uses a high-resolution, mini-camera detection technology for imaging the breast. The camera is used to provide a higher resolution image of a limited section of the body and allows for the detection of much smaller lesions, thus creating images that are more easily compared to mammography, since they are acquired in the same position. “The future is in research, specifically in molecular gene technology,” says Dr. Miidla. In university settings, research in this area studies the structure and function of genes at a molecular level. The field studies how the genes are transferred from generation to generation. The future is in studying, learning and determining if scientist can identify a way to fine tune the different cancer cells behavior. “Denial is still such a large part of the equation. Women should not wait if they believe something is wrong. Taking the first step in the prevention process is critical.”

DR. ALEJANDRA PEREZ

“COMPLIANCE IS CRITICAL in all treatments. I want to emphasize here how clinical trials have proven that full adherence can greatly increase positive outcomes for patients. We have social workers and psychologists on staff who can help patients deal with the emotional and physical burden cancer treatment can entail.”

Avoiding the first step in the screening process allows for more complications later. “The disease won’t go away; it eventually goes further if left untreated.” Dr. Alejandra Perez, an oncologist at Memorial Healthcare’s Breast Cancer Center shared vital health information as well. “Compliance is critical in all treatments. I want to emphasize here how clinical trials have proven that full adherence can greatly increase positive outcomes for patients.” There are teams in hospital systems and treatment centers to assist patients. “We have social workers and psychologists on staff who can help patients deal with the emotional and physical burden cancer treatment can entail.” Care doesn’t only include the “site” of the cancer, it includes the whole being. Surprisingly, Dr. Perez also shared, “Many patients with breast cancer avoid seeing a doctor after they find a lump because they think they are too young. This is a myth. Some patients avoid seeing a doctor because they have no family history of breast cancer.” It is essential that all women and men seek medical advice when they find a lump or other abnormality in their breast tissue, lymph nodes, chest muscles or develop another symptom, regardless of age or family history. While breast cancer primarily affects women older than 50, Dr. Perez’s youngest patient is only 18 years old. New screening tools, technology and treatments can and will help you should you find out you have some form of cancer. The actual process of diagnosis can take weeks and involve many different kinds of tests. As many cancer survivors share, “waiting for results can feel like a lifetime and all the uncertainty can cause so much additional stress…but once you understand your own unique “big picture,” you can make better decisions. You and your doctors can formulate a treatment plan tailored just for you.”

For the last 30 years, physicians have touted the benefits of early detection of breast cancer through the routine use of mammographic screening. It is well known that there is a reduction in the number of deaths related to breast cancer by 30-40% when women comply with having their annual screening mammograms. The current guideline, recommended by the majority of professional societies, is annual mammography should begin for women after the age of 40 years. However, over the last several years there have been tremendous advances in technology, and specific groups of women have been evaluated more carefully. As a result, we have found that mammography may only be detecting 50% of known cancers in women with elevated breast density and that breast density is one of the strongest risk factors a woman may face in determining her risk for developing breast cancer. Breast density is the way we describe the composition of the breast due to its varying types of tissues that comprise it. This density is different from woman to woman and can only be depicted on mammograms as the images reflect the actual tissue composition of the breast. On the mammogram images, the densities in the breast appear “white,” as does breast cancer. The similarities in contrast between dense breast tissue and cancer can delay detection, as it is difficult to differentiate one from the other. Try to imagine how hard it is to find a “snowball in a snowstorm!” However, radiologists and practitioners have many more tools in their ‘arsenal’ to image these types of breasts, making it possible to differentiate between dense tissue and cancer, which allow them to detect an abnormality at an earlier stage.

FAT T Y B R E A S T

DENSE BREAST

If a woman has low breast density, her breasts are predominantly comprised of fatty tissue. If a woman has high breast density, her breasts are composed predominantly of fibrous and glandular tissues, which are the elements in which cancer is found. The rationale for this is based on the results from many research studies proposing that mammographic density creates a favorable environment for abnormal cells to transform into cancer cells; much like fertile soil giving a planted seed the needed nutrients to grow and develop. High breast density can increase the risk of developing breast cancer by four to five times. Currently, at the Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute – The Center for Breast Care, women are made aware of their breast density as they receive the results of their screening mammogram. Those with elevated density are encouraged to discuss with their physician the benefits of additional imaging, such as ultrasound, for improved breast cancer detection. A formal breast risk assessment is also available by specialty-trained nurse practitioners at the Center. This individualized assessment includes an in-depth physical breast examination and clinical-risk modeling using computer software based on a comprehensive evaluation of your medical history. Genetic testing and counseling is also available for those found to be at the highest level of risk. All participants receive education and a personalized surveillance plan.

HOW BLUE IS BROWARD? BY JULIE KAY

The Republican Party of Broward County doesn’t even pretend it can win Broward County for Mitt Romney this fall. Their goal is a number: 35 percent. No Republican in modern history has taken the state of Florida without attaining 35 percent of voters, said Richard DeNapoli, chairman of the Republican Party of Broward County. And, since Florida is one of No Republican the key states needed to win victory in modern history for a presidential candidate – if not has taken the ground zero -- achieving that goal is state of Florida more important than ever, he said. without attaining “George Bush got 34.79 percent 35 percent of of Broward in 2004 and he won voters. the state,” said DeNapoli. “In 2008, McCain got 33 percent. Or, as prominent South Florida pollster and political strategist Jim Kane puts it, “it’s so blue here you can’t breathe.” The reasons for Broward’s Democratic slant are welldocumented. Once solidly Republican, the county changed dramatically when hundreds of thousands of retirees from New York and the northeast relocated to the county, starting back in the 1960s, filling high-rise condos in Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Hallandale. Largely Democratic, pro-union and liberal, they brought their ingrained voting habits with them. No Republican has won a presidential race here since 1988, when George Bush beat Michael Dukakis. And while many pollsters and voting experts had predicted the seniors would be dying out by now and replaced with younger, more conservative voters fleeing Miami-Dade

ANTHONY PURCELL

Without warning, life can change in an instant…On February 6, 2010, while in South Florida to attend the Super Bowl, Anthony Purcell dove into Miami Beach waters and didn’t come back up. He landed on a sandbar,

tragically breaking his neck and bruising his C5 and C6 vertebrae – leaving him paralyzed. Doctors concluded that like countless other Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) victims, he had little to no chance of walking again. Determined to beat the odds, Anthony quickly began intense rehabilitation which has slowly helped him regain his strength, and come closer to being able to walk again. As a result of his experience, Anthony and his mother, Micki Purcell, created the Walking With Anthony Foundation to help give others with SCI the same chance at recovery. The non-profit is dedicated to raising funds to provide financial assistance for SCI victims, expand rehabilitation centers and support research relating to SCI rehabilitation.

On November 2nd from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., Walking With Anthony, will host its first annual South Florida “Movement for Change: It’s Time to Soar” fundraising event in Hangar 9 at the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. The fabulous evening of dinner, dancing, private jet tours and silent/live auctions, will honor Anthony’s surgeon, Dr. Allan Levi, Chief of Neurospine Service and Fellowship Director at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, and will present financial grants to two local heroes - Nick Williams and Chris Hickox – to attend the Project Walk Spinal Cord Injury Rehab in California, for treatment. . Successful Entrepreneur & Adjunct FIU Professor With A Charitable Agenda BY KEVIN LANE

“Stop dreaming and start doing… if you don’t, someone else will. Let go of all the fears and “what ifs.” Stop waiting for “the right time”— there never will be,” advises Samantha DeBianchi. “I always knew from a very young age that I wanted to be an entrepreneur,” Samantha mused. By early age, think elementary school… “I was running businesses since the first grade: selling sticker books, Girl Scout cookies, making lemonade at a lemonade stand and car-washes.” Sam started in the night club business at age 20, where she learned “…to think fast and analyze just about everything from your staff to your client’s spending habits. Creativity is the key.” She attributed her future success to the communication and negotiating skills she learned in her night club work. In 2009, she began her career in real estate, a time when realtors by the thousands were leaving the profession and real estate companies were closing their doors. The “gloom and “I always knew from a doom” predictions espoused by the very young age that “experts” didn’t phase Samantha, as I wanted to be an DeBianchi Real Estate, founded in entrepreneur. I was 2011, is booming! She interacts with her running businesses five associates daily and holds weekly meetings; helping them to define and since the first grade: reach their goals, coaching them and selling sticker books, monitoring their progress. While most teens have challenges, Sam had a whopper of one! When she was 14 years old, she was diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease, a rare hormonal disorder, resulting in a brain tumor, Type 2 Diabetes, pre-osteoporosis and stunted growth, compounded by traumatic bullying due to physical changes in her appearance. Thanks to doctors at National Institute of Health, she recovered; although the disease led to arthritis. A great believer in the old sales maxim, that “… nothing happens until somebody sells something,” Samantha knows the importance of selling,

You can have a great product or service but if nobody knows about it, it really doesn’t matter what you have,” she enthused. A portion of the commission of every deal that DeBianchi Real Estate closes is donated to the charity of her client’s choice. Sam is immersed in charitable causes and fundraising projects, including Cystic Fibrosis, HANDY and Make-A-Wish. She was a recent “Woman of the Year” nominee, raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Sam’s newest involvement is with NVEEE (National Voices for Equality Education and Enlightenment), an organization that provides support services to youths and families affected by bullying, violence and suicide, through preventative education and communication. Homeless In The Rhythm Of Life Passing By BY KEVIN LANE

And the envelope please… These four words kept film-maker Sharyn Bey on the edge of her seat at Cinema Paradiso when awards were being presented for the winners of their film contest, “Movies of Our Lives.” Sponsored by Funding Arts Broward, The Knight Foundation and The Broward County Film Society, there were over $5,000 in cash prizes and it was free to enter. “I heard about the movie project and was intrigued,” Sharyn Bey recalled. “According to the rules, the film had to be no more than 3-minutes in length and the subject matter must be about life in Broward County: the parks, beach, restaurants, traffic, your dog or anything that speaks to you.” What ‘spoke to Sharyn’ was the rhythm of life of the homeless people gathered in front of the library. Between that ‘light bulb moment’ and the screening of her film, she established a rapport and mutual respect with many of the homeless, agreed not to include anyone that didn’t want to be shown, recorded hours of interviews, edited the “According to the rules, film and added a soundtrack. the film had to be no “Originally, I wasn’t going to have any more than 3-minutes in dialogue… the ‘soundtrack’ would be the length and the subject sounds of living on the streets – hence matter must be about the name of the film, “Homeless In The Rhythm Of Life Passing By,” she noted. life in Broward County: That changed when she heard Bobby the parks, beach, McFerrin (of “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” restaurants, traffic, your fame) voicing Vivaldi on Classical Radio dog or anything that 89.7. So, she bought five disposable cameras and distributed them to her ‘cast,’ with instructions to show her what THEY saw. Those photos became a segment of the film, transforming it into a collaborative effort. Finished at last? No… one more detour… how to wrap-up the story. Eureka! Each participant was asked what one thing they would like people to know about being homeless. It was a GREAT finishing touch!

And the winner is… Sharyn Bey! “Shock and awe are words that came to mind! The $500 was great, but the validation of the project was priceless,” Sharyn enthused. First thing the following morning, she took a portion of the prize money to her “peeps,” who where equally surprised that the film won. And that’s a WRAP! The film is at http://youtu.be/-6soh4Du1WQ. A Husband & Wife Team That Are Yachting In Style BY KEVIN LANE

“Working as a Chef on a private mega yacht is quite an adventure,” Kim Naimoli quipped. For the past decade, she and her husband Steven they have been hired as a team to Captain and work as Executive Chef… and individually. Steven flies to where the yacht is docked and delivers it to the owner’s requested destination. Their Yachting adventure started with a Christmas present! The couple met in Geneva, New York in 1989, where Steven owned a credit reporting and collection agency and Kim was in sales and marketing for the company. Over the years, they became good friend, fell in love and got married. In 1994 Steve sold his business and the couple moved to Fort Lauderdale. “One Christmas Kim gave me a Captain’s class gift certificate. I took the class and got my 100 ton license,” Steve said. However, one company is revolutionizing the pawning industry by offering their services as more than just a pawn shop, but as an alternative financing solution - and it’s all conveniently online. Pawngo.com is the first full service online pawn shop in the U.S., specializing in loans of up to $1 million to help individuals, families, and even small businesses get the immediate cash they need. Pawngo appraises your item, provides shipping, and is able to “My Pawngo Rep was deposit the loan into your so wonderful and bank account within days of supportive. I placed my receiving the item. Hills states that: “Traditional lending institutions are simply not able to meet the cash-flow needs of America right now. When the bank says no, individuals seeking immediate funding don’t have a ton of other options. Pawngo gives consumers access to capital without credit checks or financial disclosures.” The growing demand of alternative lending services across the country has allowed Todd Hills to reinvent the industry by expanding g the breadth of Pawngo’s product offering and delving into untapped markets. One of these markets includes their new Luxury Asset Division, which caters to a large y portion of their customer base who occupy d a higher income bracket than standard pawn shops. Led by GIA Gemologist, Kelle Graham, Pawngo’s Luxury Assets Division is dedicated to providing a more personalized experience for customers who have large scale loans. Graham notes that her high end clientele are always pleasantly surprised when they come across Pawngo, as most were not previously aware they could secure money against items they already own. One such customer is Linda Wintersteen. Living in a small ski resort town means few places to secure money against high end assets, but after some research, Linda used Pawngo to secure a loan on her

My Pawngo Rep was so wonderful and supportive. I placed my checking account info on the web and the loan quote came back, just as promised, which was a relief. I filled out the form and then I got an email back saying my account will have the cash in tomorrow.” High end jewelry, fine watches, diamonds and precious gems are some of the luxury items Graham and her highly-trained team appraise based on several criteria such as current diamond values and market vs. retail value. Pawngo currently holds a $100K diamond ring on loan in their vault. Pawngo has already loaned nearly $9 million since opening last year, and Hills believes the difference lies in the trust his company has built with their customers. Hills wants to keep his online business personal and even goes so far as to prefer the term “life event” over “transaction.” With more people than ever struggling in this economy, Pawngo offers a discreet, quick and safe way to pawn luxury items without losing precious heirlooms for good. American Heritage Is #1 Prep School In The Country Says MaxPreps! BY KEVIN LANE

Talk about an amazing year, American Heritage was named the “… 2011-2012 #1 Prep Sports Program in all of the country,” according to Steve Montoya, Executive Editor at MaxPreps, a rating agency that covers high school sports nationwide. “You were also named the No.1 school in your state, Top Girls Program in the nation and the Top Medium School in terms of enrollment in the nation. From all of us here at MaxPreps, congratulations on a wonderful year,” Montoya wrote to Jeff Dellenbach, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at American Heritage School. It was a remarkable spring season in which American Heritage captured state championships in baseball, softball and boys and girls track and vaulted the Patriots to the top spot in the inaugural MaxPreps Cup standings. “We have a remarkable student body,” Coach Dellenbach said with some degree of pride. He went on to point out that the success of the sports program and indeed the high standing of American Heritage is a result

of exceptional coaches, teachers, administrative staff and… of course, the students. “Excellence is part of the DNA of American Heritage.”

“We have a remarkable student body. Excellence is part of the DNA of American Heritage.” American Heritage took home honors in three categories. The Patriots are also in the top medium school’s program and they have the top female sports program with 517 points. Along with the state titles in baseball, softball and boys and girls track, the Patriots also won a state championship in boys soccer and finished second in boys and girls golf, girls swimming and girls soccer. The Patriots were also nationally ranked in baseball and boys and girls track. To accommodate the sports programs, American Heritage boasts a 12,000 square foot gymnasium, five athletic fields and a 2000 square foot

Located in Plantation, the co-ed school for grades Pre-K through 12th has approximately 2,400 students. The high school, grades 9 through 12, has a student population of 1,273 students. “Our mission is to graduate students who are prepared in mind, body and spirit to meet the requirements of the colleges of their choice,” said Dr. Doug Laurie, Vice President of American Heritage Schools. Of course, the school is much more than sports. A case in point is the Fine Arts program that is housed in a 100,000 square foot facility which contains a 1,000 seat Proscenium Theatre, black box theatre and spacious studios for all areas of the arts. The library is a 10,000 square foot state-of-the-art structure housing five interactive classrooms, 150 computers, and 60,000 volumes of books and reference materials. LP

WHAT IS THE BEST BUSINESS TO BUY? WHEN YOU ARE TAKING AN ENTREPRENEURIAL MISSION, HERE IS A COMPREHENSIVE CHECKLIST…

ANDREW CAGNETTA Certified Business Intermediary CEO, Transworld Business Advisors Offices Nationwide 954-772-1122 www.tworld.com

I am a confirmed “Serial Entrepreneur”! I have bought and sold many businesses for myself over the last 25 years, and as owner of Transworld Business Advisors, I have assisted thousands of business owners to buy and sell theirs. Currently, I spend a lot of my time mentoring our offi ce staff nationwide and speak nationally on the subject of buying a business. One of the most popular questions I am asked is, “What is the best business to buy?” My

66

quick answer is “one that makes money and can prove it.” The real answer however, is much more complicated. Whether you are looking to buy a business, start a business or choose a franchise, here are the key things to look for based on my success and proven track record: LONGEVITY- I like businesses that have been around for a long time. Most people dislike change and old habits die hard. Therefore, customers that have “worn a path” to a business usually continue to do so. ESTABLISHED INDUSTRYTrying to launch new products or business ideas is one of the hardest things to do. I would rather buy or grab market share from an industry that is already making money. MONEY IS FLOWING - It is best to be in a business where money is changing hands. High traffic, volume, and recurring revenues are all great things to look for. HIGH MARGINS - Thin is not in! Slim margins that rely on volume are vulnerable to large losses. Even slight increases in the cost of goods or increased expenses can have a huge impact. I prefer a business that can make a lot of money

OCTOBER 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

on one sale! OUTSIDE SALES POTENTIALBusinesses that rely on drawing from local traffic (like a gas station) can’t grow very much. I look for a business that through marketing, networking, and outsides sales can greatly expand. PROVEN BUSINESS MODELBuy into a successful business model. I like franchises and other established brands. IT THRIVES ON YOUR TALENTS, AND WON’T SUFFER FROM YOUR WEAKNESSESWhatever business you pursue should make the majority of its money based on your skill set. You can hire the rest. My dear friend Richard Parker wrote a book “How To Buy A Good Business At A Great Price” that talks about this topic in depth. PASSION FOR IT - You should love what you do, have a passion for it, and your employees and customers should be happy to see you. If tough times come, loving what you do will help you get through them. IT PASSES THE SMELL TESTIs it too good to be true? Can you explain it to your 3-yearold or grandparent? Is it legal or won’t be soon? What does your gut say? If no …then pass. There is nothing better than being a successful entrepreneur! I look forward to writing more about the subject in the future.

LIQUID FACELIFTS: THE NONSURGICAL ALTERNATIVE

Skin Center 1RUWK )HGHUDO +Z\ 6XLWH Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308 SkinCenter.com

For over 35 years, Roger H. Stewart, MD has been a pioneer in Cosmetic Dermatology and Skin Cancer treatment, employing state-of-the-art technology in his East Fort Lauderdale practice. As we age, our faces begin to lose collagen and elastin which contributes to sagging features and the formation of wrinkles, lines and folds. One of the most common techniques for reducing these visible signs of aging is the use of injectable dermal ďŹ llers. Fillers are extremely versatile and can be used to treat speciďŹ c areas of concern such as lips or smile lines, and can also be combined in an advanced, non-surgical technique commonly referred to as a “Liquid Facelift.â€? A liquid facelift helps achieve an overall lift of facial features as well as restoration of your natural, curved facial contours for a more rested, energetic look and a friendlier smile. Alone or as a part of a liquid facelift, ďŹ llers are used for much more than lines and wrinkles. Under eye bags and dark circles can be masked, eyes can be opened up and lids lifted, jowls can be raised and diminished, natural shape can be restored to

sunken cheeks or temple areas, the corners of the mouth can be lifted, bumps on the nose can be hidden and even bony hands can be ďŹ lled to bring back a plump, youthful look. A liquid facelift involves the use of advanced dermal ďŹ llers, sometimes in combination with BotoxÂŽ or DysportÂŽ. The dermal ďŹ llers used are among a group of 2nd generation injectables that provide more enduring results (six months to a year) than earlier products. These advanced dermal ďŹ llers includes JuvedermÂŽ, RadiesseÂŽ, RestylaneÂŽ, ÂŽ Perlane , and BeloteroÂŽ. Each of these ďŹ llers has unique attributes that work in their own special way to rejuvenate speciďŹ c areas of the face. In general, dermal ďŹ llers replace lost volume in the face and help the body regenerate its own collagen. Most of the ďŹ llers are comprised of natural substances produced by the body. Different ďŹ llers are used for different areas and results – Belotero, for example, is a relatively new ďŹ ller from the makers of Radiesse with a unique ability to integrate with the tissues of your skin – providing exceptional results around the lips and under the eyes. Dermal ďŹ llers can be used to lift or contour any number of facial features and, in the hands of an expert,

ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT RUPTURE IN THE YOUNG ATHLETE “CHOOSING THE RIGHT SPECIALIST Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage. The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, One may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those

patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice. Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my ofďŹ ce for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with stateof-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/ or methods of ďŹ xation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to

athletics, also play a signiďŹ cant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, highdemand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner.

THE CENTER FOR COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT: CREATING A MORE BEAUTIFUL YOU MARK S. NESTOR, MD, PH.D

Mark S. Nestor MD, Ph.D is a board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon who offers more than 45 procedures at his Center for Cosmetic Enhancement in Aventura.

2925 Aventura Blvd. Suite 205 Aventura, Florida 33180 Many people equate looking younger with having to go under the knife. But new procedures and the development of non-invasive technologies are allowing people to turn back the hands of time, non-invasively, with little or no downtime. Mark S. Nestor, M.D., Ph.D. is a pioneer in the field of these noninvasive procedures. The boardcertified dermatologic and laser surgeon has been at the forefront in the use of such novel and noninvasive treatments that are being used to take away years from a person’s face and body. For example, noninvasive toning and tightening and lifting for the face can be achieved with the use of Ulthera, a procedure that uses ultrasound to target the same muscle tissue that is tightened during facelift surgery. Under the skin, Ulthera treatments help to stimulate the growth of new collagen, resulting in gradual tightening, firming and natural lift of the skin over time without invasive surgery. Unlike traditional plastic surgery

70

that required long recovery times, there is no downtime with Ulthera treatments and the results are significant and natural in appearance. Looking to get rid of excess fat? Dr. Nestor offers Zerona, an FDA-approved body contouring procedure that uses safe, effective techniques to release fat from cells in targeted areas of the body. Zerona uses low level lasers to reduce and recontour. Looking to get rid of those “turkey wings”? The procedure is also now FDA approved to reduce fat in the upper arms without pain or side effects. Exercising regularly, but unable to eliminate stubborn fat or problem areas like love handles? Zeltiq, better known as CoolSculpting, is an easy procedure that uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells under the skin, freezing them to the point of elimination, allowing the body to reclaim its natural shape. If you’re looking to improve the appearance of your skin, or correct conditions such as Rosacea or Melasma, photorejuvenation may be just what the doctor ordered. Another procedure called Photodynamic skin rejuvenation can also dramatically improve the appearance of sun damaged skin and even decrease the risk of future skin cancer. “Sun damage is very prevalent, especially in South Florida,” said Dr. Nestor. “Photodynamic

therapy therefore provides patients with another option for the treatment of sun damaged skin to prevent early cancers and treat pre-cancers, and it often improves their cosmetic outlook.” Another simple pick-meup are Dermal fillers. These are a great way to enhance the skin and reverse the signs of aging. Dr. Nestor offers his patients Restylane ®, Perlane ®, and Juvederm®, and often uses them in combination with muscle relaxing agents such as Botox® and Dysport®. “Fillers are not only a great way to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, but we are also finding that they stimulate collagen production over the long term,” Dr. Nestor said. Although women traditionally have been the ones looking for a more youthful appearance, Dr. Nestor is seeing an increasing number of image-conscious men in an era that’s come to be known as “Brotox.” “The stigma is gone and we are seeing a growing number of men who want to look younger, especially in a society that embraces youthfulness,” Dr. Nestor notes. “And looking younger often leads to feeling younger.” Whether you’re looking for a more youthful appearance or repairing damage to the skin, Dr. Nestor and the Center for Cosmetic Enhancement is available to meet all of your skin care needs.

DO YOU HAVE AN

OPTIMAL THYROID? THYROID HORMONE RESISTANCE IS MORE COMMON THAN PEOPLE REALIZE. “I HAVE TRIED EVERY DIET KNOWN TO MAN (OR MOMS) THESE LAST FEW YEARS – TO NO AVAIL.” Alyson continued to tell me her story. “For example, this past summer, my best friend flew me to their home in Sonoma for an entire month. We ate nothing but organic everything, lean protein, I drank 150 ounce-plus of water a day and did a high intensity workout every morning mixing up interval training with boot camp at her gym. In exactly 30 days – I lost a grand total of THREE pounds. I didn’t even lose the initial ‘water weight’ everyone else loses.” I empathized, “It’s hard to stay motivated with minimal results.” “I’m willing to starve myself, if that would work. I even did two rounds of hCG. My wallet’s lighter, but that’s about it.” “The FDA recently published a website, www.fda.gov/hcgdiet, detailing how hCG diet products are illegal, and how restrictive diets such as that one can cause electrolyte disturbances, an irregular heartbeat and are potentially fatal.” I continued, “But looking at your diet history, I don’t think the problem is one of eating too much.” “Dr. Woliner, what else could it be? I have a friend that blew up taking Abilify for her depression, and another while on Actos for diabetes, but I’m not on any medications.” “It’s true that many drugs have

weight gain as a common side effect [1]. But there are other causes of weight gain. With your other symptoms of cold intolerance, fatigue, and constipation, I’m thinking that you have an untreated thyroid condition [2].” “I begged my other doctors to treat me for that, but they all said no.” “Some doctors focus too much on lab tests without considering the patient’s history and physical exam findings [3]. Thyroid hormone resistance is more common than people realize.” Alyson sat with a puzzled look on her face. “So, even if these doctors said my tests were normal, I might still have a thyroid problem? [4]” “The word ‘normal’ has many meanings. There is a difference between ‘common’ and ‘optimal’ [5]. Rather than using a range that includes people who are overweight and being treated for high cholesterol and other conditions, perhaps it would be better to use narrower ranges of persons who feel ‘dandy’ [6].” “Does anyone even use that word anymore?” “My practice is built on patientto-patient referrals. Just liking my bedside manner is not enough to convince your friends to see me. You have to glow. So yes, I do plan on making you feel dandy.” After finishing Alyson’s physical exam, my staff used our Korr indirect calorimetry machine to measure her metabolic rate [7].

“You’re at ‘minus 20%’. That’s one of slowest metabolism’s I’ve ever seen!” “How do we fix that?” “I use a holistic approach that combines behavior changes, diet, exercise, supplements, and of course medications [8,9]. I prefer to use T3 based drugs as they have been shown to cause significantly more weight loss than T4 drugs such as Synthroid alone [10].” As I ramped up Alyson’s dose of thyroid medication, her fatigue and other symptoms began to resolve. To be on the safe side, I periodically rechecked her EKG and bone density, which remained normal [11]. “Dr. Woliner, your scale says I only lost 49 pounds, but at home, naked, I’m down 51!” Dr. Kenneth Woliner is a boardcertified family physician in private practice in Boca Raton. THE FAMILIES SOUTHERN ITALIAN STYLE INFLUENCES ALL THE DISHES PREPARED. OVER SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT OF THE STAFF WERE BORN IN ITALY AND SPEAK WITH BEAUTIFUL ACCENTS. THE ATMOSPHERE PROVIDES A FEELING THAT YOU ARE DINING INSIDE A LOVELY ITALIAN HOME.

OCTOBER 2012

Tony Cupelli started Caffe Europa over twentytwo years ago on Las Olas Boulevard. This authentic, traditional yet trendy Italian restaurant is truly family owned and operated. It is as if there is almost a piece of Europe on Las Olas. Tony’s daughter Lisa, her brother Anthony and sister Rosanna were raised in the business. When you arrive to dine, you are instantly embraced and begin to feel that you are part of their inner circle. For many years, Caffe Europa was located further west on Las Olas. The new location, closer to 9th Avenue, is more upscale. There are a few tables located outside, inside is a charming bar and wine area, an open dining room and a fabulous display case filled with homemade desserts that will constantly catch your eye. The families Southern Italian style influences all the dishes prepared. Over seventy-five percent of the staff were born in Italy and speak with beautiful accents. The atmosphere provides a feeling that you are dining inside a lovely Italian home. Chef Pietro Rota continues to create dishes that were inspired by Tony’s original recipes. The approach using only the finest and freshest ingredients, many of them imported, is what keeps locals coming back to savor unique Italian main plates. The chef has featured specials, four to five, every night that will make your mouth water just reading the menu. Specials usually include a meat, pasta and a fish offering. If a creamy Saffron Risotto is available, don’t miss it! This dish is sautéed perfectly with shrimp,

scallops and zucchini and was incredible! It was extremely light and fluffy and is not to be missed. Appetizers to try include the Antipasto Italiano. The prosciutto is imported from Italy and is surrounded by fresh marinated mozzarella, olives, thin meats slices and chunks of parmigiano reggiano cheese. This is truly authentic. The Broccoli Rabe e Italian Sausage is absolutely unique and out of this world! The garlic is mashed and delivers a light flavor and the sausage is very thinly sliced without casing. This brings an extremely mild and light essence to the sausage. Great presentation, have a taste! The menu offers many specialty pizzas. The Rustica was exceptional! Crispy, thin and juicy! The prosciutto, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, shaved parmigiano reggiano with arugula was outstanding! The pasta Lasagna alla Bolognese is homemade baked lasagna with meat in a béchamel sauce. Think heaven. Think velvety, smooth and light. This is a white sauce of butter, flour, and milk or cream. This is a must have!

If you fancy Veal, the Vitello al Marsala is sautéed with baby mushrooms in a dry marsala wine sauce served with pasta. This quality veal is rich, flavorful and milk-fed. For fish lovers, the Dentice alla Livornese is a Snapper filet sautéed with capers, olives, onions, garlic, white wine, pomodoro sauce and is served with pasta as well. The fish is sweet, and the calamata olives give this dish a full-bodied aromatic flavor. Very tempting! Every taste that crossed my palate was fantastic! But nothing is as tempting for me as homemade biscotti, gelato, blueberry cheesecake and a true favorite, frutti de bosco blackberry. It literally means “Fruits of the Forest (or Woods).” The true translation into English is mixed berries. The dessert plate was empty, not a morsel to be found. Scrumptious! Mario Brandimarte, our server, was extraordinary. Born in Italy, a short stop in Jersey, he found himself on Las Olas Boulevard sharing a little piece of Italy like many others at Caffé Europa. On any Friday you visit, you’ll most likely see Tony and fifteen of his friends sharing “story time.” Food,

friends, Italian beer and so much more are inherent at the wonderful authentic Caffé Europa. Try a little piece of Europe on the boulevard, but make sure to use call ahead seating as there are no reservations. For more information visit www.caffeeuropalasolas. com, or contact the restaurant directly at 954-763-6600.
