t’s March. So we have six more months. And how many debates have there been so far? I must tell you that I do miss Herman Cain. His 9-9-9 plan was so brilliant. And Michelle Bachman. Michelle was lovely. She spoke well. She’s attractive. I really didn’t get her husband, but who am I to judge? Now we are down to Newt, Mitt, Rick and Ron. The Republican version of the Beatles. I can see Mitt as Paul, Newt as John, Rick as George and, of course, Ron as Ringo. I can see Mitt singing... “Can’t buy me love, love, Can’t buy me love. I’ll-buyyou-diamond-rings my friend, if-it-makes-you-votefor-me, I’ll get you anything my friend, if-you-cast-yourvote-properly, Cause all I care about is the money, but money can’t buy me love… or votes.” ”I also can see Newt belting out “I am the Walrus.” “I-am-he-as-you-are-meand-Mitt-is-me-and-I-amhe. New-newt-achoo, newnewt-achoo, I am the Walrus, I am the Egg Man, I am the Newt man”. I am trying to add some levity to a serious discussion. More and more people are frightened about the future of the United States. We have candidates on both the left and right that are complete ideologues. Are the Republicans correct? Are the Democrats correct? The answer to both questions is yes. Should the very rich pay additional money in taxes, even if it is just for a 5 year period, with the goal to balance our federal budget? Should we develop the pipeline to become energy efficient and create hundreds of thousands of jobs? Should we dramatically lower
I
GARY’S PUB LETTER federal spending and cut waste? Should we attempt to take money out of politics? Should we become tough with China and our other trading partners to create a more equitable trade policy? Should we enforce our current regulations instead of creating new regulations that we do not have resources to enforce? Should we place additional resources to train our citizens that are currently receiving unemployment benefits? You may be reading this article and asking yourself the question, “I am one person. Can I really make a difference”? The answer is yes. You probably know a politician or two. Collectively, we have power. Today our politicians and candidates have one goal in mind – to be reelected. Therefore, they feel the need to be hard right or hard left. The trouble is that we live in a world of compromises. We do it in our business and personal life every day.
MARCH 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM
When did compromise become such a toxic word? We all know that politics start locally. We can have a voice and a strong one at that. My hope is that you stand up with me and tell our politicians that unless they start compromising and getting things done, they cannot count on our money anymore. I don’t enjoy writing about politics because it can be so divisive. However I do feel that we need to raise our voices now so that our children can continue to live in the greatest country on the face of this earth. And while “Yesterday” all of our troubles seem so far away, “Imagine” what we can accomplish if we work together with a smart, efficient government that truly puts Americans first instead of politicians first.

BROWARD CHILD ADVOCACY AWARDS
Florida Children’s First Honors Attorneys with Hearts FLORIDA’S CHILDREN FIRST HONORS BROWARD COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION PRESIDENTS, AND BROWARD LEGAL AID ATTORNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR RECRUITING PRO BONO LAWYERS TO REPRESENT FOSTER CHILDREN AT TENTH ANNIVERSARY EVENT.
Florida’s Children First (FCF), the state’s preeminent child advocacy organization, will be celebrating its Tenth Anniversary at its annual Broward Awards Reception March 22nd at the Tower Club in Fort Lauderdale to honor those in our community who are recruiting and training attorneys to advocate for foster children and provide a voice to those who don’t have one. FCF Executive Director Christina Spudeas, along with FCF President and Fort Lauderdale children’s rights attorney Howard Talenfeld will lead the event, which is expected to host more than 300 child advocates, elected officials, judges, and community and business leaders. The evening will serve to recognize and honor individuals who have supported The Tracey McPharlin Pro Bono Dependency Recruitment Initiative. “These honorees all have an important connection to the Tracey McPharlin project, and the event is centered around this important project and the children it has served,” said Spudeas. “Their leadership and dedication to the project have contributed to the successful launch of this important

demonstration initiative.” This year’s Broward Child Advocate honorees include Past President of the Broward County Bar Association, Bruce Weihe; President of the Broward County Bar Association, Jordana Goldstein; and David Bazerman, Director of the Tracey McPharlin Pro Bono Dependency Recruitment Project. These honorees were all selected for their work in support of The Tracey McPharlin Pro Bono Initiative, a collaborative effort of the Broward County Bar Association, Legal Aid Service of Broward County, Inc., The 17th Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee, and Florida’s Children First to recruit, train and support pro bono attorneys to represent children in Dependency Court. More than 80 attorneys have been trained, and volunteered to take cases on behalf of the children. These attorneys will be recognized for their service to the community at the awards reception. Other special honorees include Youth Advocates Stephen Satchell & Tamarra Lestage. These inspiring individuals are being honored for their determination and inspiration after being in the foster care system. Both Tamarra and Stephen are
currently in college and members of the Broward Chapter of Florida Youth SHINE (FYS). FYS is a youth advocacy organization for children in and aging out of Florida’s foster care system. “Because the Florida Legislature did not fund attorneys to be the voice for foster children in their own dependency proceedings, the Tracey McPharlin Project has now set the example for other state’s most vulnerable citizens,” said Talenfeld who also chaired the Florida Bar’s Legal Needs of Children Committee. “It’s our honor to recognize these individuals who are committed to protecting foster children and other dependent children who need to be protected in their dependency cases.” Last year’s event was attended by more than 200 people, raising $100,000 for the organization. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, March 22, 2012, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at The Tower Club (100 Southeast Third Ave., One Financial Plaza) in Fort Lauderdale. A $100 contribution is suggested, with all proceeds to benefit FCF. For more information please call 954-796-0860 or send an email to fcf@floridaschildrenfirst.org.

those with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders, a safe-haven and emergency homeless shelter, residential treatment and group homes. For 59 years, Henderson Behavioral Health has helped people in South Florida discover new beginnings in their lives. By providing the necessary supports and services, dreams are realized. One example is John, an 18 year old man who was a foster child for several years in one of Henderson’s group homes. He dreamt of the time when he would graduate from high school and begin to live the life of a young adult. A young adult who has the things in life we all want; friends, a family, a job and meaningful activities. Thanks to Henderson’s support and John’s hard work; John is
now living independently, has friends, and attends a local college. Thanks to the generous people in South Florida, Henderson was able to help John become an independent young adult. One of the ways Henderson raises money to help people like John is through the annual gala. The organizers hope you will join them for this fun event being held on Saturday, March 31, at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six, honoring Nova Southeastern University President Dr. George L. FOR GOOD AWARDS CELEBRATE GREAT SECOND ACTS BY KEVIN LANE
When Elizabeth “BJ” Buntrock found herself newly divorced and without a career, the then 47-year old “didn’t want to sell insurance or real estate like most of her friends”. So she looked for an opportunity that spoke to her passions. The result was her creation of Flowers and Found Objects, a flower and gift boutique she founded with the purchase of the front half of The Broward Fruit Company’s Fort Lauderdale building in 1983. BJ “hung out a shingle” on what was then the

sleepy little shopping district of Las Olas Blvd. For the next 29 years she grew the business into a Fort Lauderdale institution. This entrepreneurial spirit and ability is exactly why the Community Foundation of Broward named BJ the winner of its 2012 For Good Awards on February 14th ,2012. BJ was named the 2012 winner not for creating her business, but rather for using her skills in her “encore career” after her 2005 retirement.
“WITH one in 11 grandparents IN FLORIDA ACTING AS THE PRINCIPAL caregiver for their grandchildren, AND THE INCREASING FINANCIAL STRAIN ON ALL SENIORS,
I knew we had to do something.”
Upon leaving her business, BJ again looked for a role that spoke to her passions and her belief that “to whom much is given, much is expected.” She discovered her new role when she noticed a lack of infrastructure to support Broward’s seniors and grandparents raising their children. At the age of 73, BJ purchased an 8,000 sq. ft warehouse and opened the doors to the Pantry of Broward. The Pantry serves seniors throughout Broward County who struggle to survive on low fixed incomes, particularly those grandparents who are the primary caregiver for their grandchildren. The Fort Lauderdale nonprofit provides nutritious foods monthly to each client as well as helping clients complete applications for food stamps, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits. A case manager also helps seniors obtain dental care, vision and hearing exams, legal advice, and access emergency assistance for utilities, rent and mortgage expenses. “With one in 11 grandparents in Florida acting as the principal caregiver for their grandchildren, and the increasing financial strain on all seniors, I knew we had to do something,” said BJ. “I was lucky to have a great group of supporters and volunteers to make that happen so those we serve can live safe and healthy lives.” The For Good Awards are part of the Community Foundation of Broward’s Re-engage for Good movement aimed at ensuring new retirees can use their skills and interests to make a difference in their communities. The announcement was made at the Signature Grand on Valentine’s Day, February 14th , 2012 as part of the Foundation’s celebration of civic engagement and its efforts to create a more informed, empowered and connected community. “BJ decision to give back to her community is a shining example of what Re-engage for Good is all about,”
said Linda B. Carter, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Broward. “BJ is utilizing skills and talents acquired over a lifetime to

By using an experiential, hands-on approach, students are taught not only about the fundamentals of music, but how they relate to the academic world. An accomplished musician, Mennel-Bell holds a dual Master’s degree in Elementary Education and Music Education, as well as a Master’s degree in Social Work. Cleveland Clinic Florida, KPMG, John Knox Village, Mark J. The Community Foundation of Broward received 70 nominations for the For Good Awards from across Broward, each highlighting an individual utilizing skills and talents acquired while attending college, raising a family, or developing a career to create solutions on issues they care about. “Baby boomers comprise almost a third of the U.S population and every seven seconds another American turns 60,” Masi said. “It is critical to Broward’s vitality that we provide this highly educated and dynamic generation with opportunities to connect with their community so that we don’t lose this extraordinary human capital.” To encourage increased reengagement of Broward’s more than 500,000 baby boomers the Community Foundation is also funding Re-engage for Good programs with various community partners. Each program is designed to help even more residents discover meaningful ways to serve. This year, more than 430 baby boomers were re-engaged! VETERAN MAKEOVER
Dania Beach Chamber Veteran Honored by Top Designer with Military Room Makeover
THE DANIA BEACH CHAMBER AWARDED MILITARY VETERAN, BRANDON PAQUET WITH A “NEW ROOM” PART OF A “MILITARY MAKEOVER” PROGRAM. The makeover comes courtesy of Kendall Marcelle, Kendall Marcelle Design Associates through the Military Room Makeover Program organized by the Dania Beach Design District, sponsored by Luxe Interiors & Design Magazine. Nine Florida Chambers of Commerce, cities and organizations selected nine veterans to represent their group to receive a free room makeover. Nine top designers were selected to donate their services and resources to make each veteran’s dream come true. Brandon Paquet, Dania’s honored veteran, served in the Air Force for eight years as a Crew Chief to combat the Global War on Terrorism after September 11, flying to ensure that all military transport and fighter aircraft remained refueled. He’s currently stationed at Homestead Air Reserve Base as a Crew Chief. The Air Force inspired Brandon to become a commercial pilot at Miami International.
BRANDON PAQUET AND FAMILY
“I love serving in the military,” says Brandon “The US has freedoms that other countries dream about. The brave people who risk it all make these freedoms possible.” Brandon recently asked Erin Parker to marry him. The couple’s engaged and thrilled about their new room makeover. Designer Kendall Marcelle, Kendall Marcelle Design Associates said,” The Military Room Makeover program’s been a great experience. We’re honored to work with Brandon and his fiancée Erin. We bonded instantly and they embraced the entire design process. Their favorite time of year.....Halloween and autumn, inspired our color palette. Double giant orange framed mirrors added a touch of drama and bold color. Subtle shades and textures of autumn were added such as; the brown suede sofa, wenge wood entertainment unit, a natural wood cocktail table, chestnut colored rattan dining set and beautiful birch tree painting, which reflect hues of fall. Brandon we salute you and the Dania Beach Design District’s endless efforts to make the veterans Military Room Makeover program a huge success.” Brandon has loved the makeover process as well. “When I was first selected for the Military Room Makeover, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The best part’s been how wonderful everyone involved has been. It’s nice to know that people really care about veterans. The Dania Beach Chamber, Designer Kendall Marcelle, her team and the Dania Beach Design District have put their hearts into it! Life can be difficult at times but, projects like this makes everything worthwhile. We love the room Kendall Marcelle created and thank all from the bottom of our hearts.”

J.G bills himself as an adventurer and purveyor of fine libations. That intrigues us. In fact, as a fan of adventure of fine libations, we just had to check it out. And J.G delivered. First, the décor is truly amazing. We love the Oscar Wilde saying etched into the walls and we really loved the Guinness. This is an authentic Irish Pub with its proprietor having studied the art of the Irish Pub in Dublin. The result is an outstanding establishment inspired by legendary Irish pubs. TIP: The owner worked for DiageoGuinness. Don’t miss the Guinness.
1095 SE 17 St Fort Lauderdale, FL (954) 828-2755
We’ve been to Waxy’s in Keene, New Hampshire. We’ve been to Waxy’s in Foxborough, Mass (tip don’t root for the Yankees while in Foxborough), but we love the one in our own backyard. Waxy’s is an authentic Irish bar— classy, fun, and you simply can’t beat the potato leek soup. TIP: Don’t root for the Yankees in Foxborough. That bears repeating.
DA BIG KAHUNA
J.G. MCGUINNESS IRISH PUB & RESTAURANT
WAXY O’CONNOR’S IRISH PUB & EATERY
Like the song says—everybody loves the Big Kahuna. When considering great watering holes, you do need to include a little diversity and Da Big Kahuna provides a respite from the typical bar scene. Relaxing, tropical and authentically Hawaiian, a visit to Da Big Kahuna is a chance to escape the daily grind. TIP: You had us at the Kalua Pork.

PARROT LOUNGE 911 Sunrise Lane Fort Lauderdale (954) 563-1493
If you appreciate classic Florida watering holes, this is your place. They are a dying breed. But the Parrot is very much alive and a great place to spend St. Patty’s Day. The drinks are tropical, the location is wonderful and the food is good as well. The Parrot Lounge bills itself as world famous and it is. When it comes to classic bars in Lauderdale—the Parrot is at the top of the list. TIP: We like the homemade chili. We can be talked into the mozzarella sticks, but we prefer the chili.

Despite Rocky Climate, Banks Committed to Community BY JIM FREER
BANK PHILANTHROPY Even during the recent recession and the slow recovery that has followed, many civic and charitable organizations and other non-profits have not experienced a downturn in support from the banking industry. That includes Broward County where large multi-state banks and locally based banks have long been among the leaders in providing financial support and volunteer service by employees. One example is The Pantry of Broward, which provides food and support services to senior citizens who are in need. No matter the economic climate, numerous banks have remained important supporters with contributions of money and volunteer work in food drives and other programs, said Catherine “Penny” Loughan, CEO of The Pantry of Broward. In particular, Loughan said that Bank of America “been our biggest cheerleader.” Lori Chevy, Bank of America’s market president for Broward County said: “In an effort to make opportunity possible for organizations that address critical social and economic needs like hunger, I am proud the bank has provided support to this outstanding organization.” Like many other banks, Bank of America bases its decisions on where to spend philanthropic dollars largely on what it sees as the potential impact throughout a local community.

LORI CHEVY
“IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE OPPORTUNITY POSSIBLE FOR ORGANIZATIONS THAT ADDRESS CRITICAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC NEEDS LIKE HUNGER, I AM PROUD THE BANK HAS PROVIDED SUPPORT TO THIS OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION.” The Pantry of Broward’s impact is over several generations of families because many of its services are for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. Banks generally do not release localized data on their contributions to charitable and civic organizations, schools, hospitals, museums, performing arts centers and various other non-profits. Lynne Wines is president of First Southern Bank and is the current chairman of the United Way of Broward County.
MARCH 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM
She said First Southern has maintained its levels of community support and that the banking industry has remained a major supporter of the United Way. First Southern is headquartered in Boca Raton and has two branches in Broward County. “Maybe some banks have had to cut back a bit on financial support (for non-profits),” Wines said. “But I don’t think there have been any reductions in man and woman hours. Bankers realize how much their support is needed.” The real estate crisis has led to a significant downturn in overall bank earnings, and surviving banks are more tightly monitoring their charitable contributions and other spending. The nation’s banking industry had a composite net loss of $9.8 billion in 2009 but has since been slowly returning to profitability, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Banks based in Florida had composite annual net losses between 2008 and 2010 before they began posting quarterly profits last year, according to the FDIC. But many banks are still earning less than prior to the recession and still spending considerable time and money on workouts of problem real estate loans. One constant factor in good times and bad is that banks’ civic and charitable donations and
BUSINESS&money
services help them comply with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). That federal law requires banks to have programs that provide loans and other services to lowincome and moderate-income individuals and individuals within their geographic markets. Another constant is that officials of non-profits should have precise answers when bankers ask for details about operations, goals and services— especially overhead costs. “We need to know the extent of service to the local community, and how many dollars go all the way through to those who are supposed to benefit,” said Cyril “Sid” Spiro, chairman of Regent Bank which is based in Davie. Regent can find that information partly because Spiro and other Regent officials are members of boards of directors of several Broward civic and charitable organizations. That includes the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, of which Spiro is a former chairman. “We provide donations and we tell our employees to assist with programs and to don’t be just a member,” he said. Working with civic groups brings Regent into contact with other businesses that can become its clients, Spiro said. Meanwhile, some Regent clients have learned about and joined civic groups through their dealings with the bank. BB&T has a review process, using information from its bankers and clients, before it determines levels of support for civic groups, said Antonio (Tony) Coley, the bank’s city executive for Broward. “We need to see how our dollars will be leveraged and how they will make an impact in
Bank’s civic support, said Jane Gilbert, the bank’s community affairs officer for South Florida. Wells Fargo, based in San Francisco, gained its first branches in Florida when it bought Wachovia Bank in 2008. It changed signs on those branches last year. “The community programs we added (from the merger) are very similar to what we have had at Wells Fargo.” Gilbert said. She said Wells Fargo increased its community affairs financial contributions in South Florida in 2011, compared with 2010. WESTON JEWELERS… OFFICIAL JEWELERS TO THE FLORIDA PANTHERS… BY KEVIN LANE
Over the past decade, Weston Jewelers at 1728 Main Street in Weston has gained the enviable reputation of being one of South Florida’s premier purveyors of fine jewelry and timepieces. Their new relationship with the Florida Panther’s Foundation and the Bank Atlantic Center has already paid some big dividends. “We are absolutely thrilled and honored that a firstclass local company such as Weston Jewelers has chosen to join the Sunrise Sports & Entertainment (SSE) family as a marketing partner,” said SSE president & COO Michael Yormark. “I am looking forward to helping raise their brand awareness to BankAtlantic Center patrons, particularly through a number of unique programs that specifically reach their target audience.” Shortly after Weston Jewelry and SSE joined forces, Weston Jewelry became a sponsor of the Ice & Dice Casino Event, which benefited The Florida Panthers Foundation. Held at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale, the casino-style event featured every Florida Panthers player, coach and staff member acting as the dealers for the night. As a sponsor of the evening Weston Jewelers donated a diamond for the Champagne Raffle. More charity events are on the horizon. Another marketing partnership is “Diamonds Are Forever” Register-To-Win Campaign, and BankAtlantic Center Suite 242 Jewelry Extravaganzas, in which custom, high-end jewelry displays were erected in the arena’s owners’ suite during select ice hockey games. “Our selection of fine jewelry is able to please everyone from collectors of rare gemstones to those buying their first engagement ring. Our sales specialists’ are able assist you in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian and French,” said Tracey Dikes, who with her husband Edward Dikes own Weston Jewelers. “Harpers Bazaar named us one of the “Best Jewelry and Watch Retailers in America,” Edward added proudly. “We have always been committed to supporting both local and national charities and have created numerous “Charity Key” events, which benefit these organizations. It’s our way of giving back to the community and helping those in need,” Edward noted. Some of those non-profits include Make a Wish Foundation, Kids In Distress, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and The Center for Missing and Exploited Children. “Celebrating their ten year anniversary, Weston Jewelers carries some of the worlds most renowned names in jewelry and timepieces,” says Paul Slutsky VP of Marketing. BRAD PRESSENTIN IS A TEAM PLAYER – BOTH ON AND OFF THE COURT. So it’s no surprise that March is a busy time for the Parkland resident. Not only is college basketball at its peak of excitement with March Madness, but Hard Rock Vodka is expanding into 13 additional markets. Pressentin accepted the role as the National Sales Director for Hard Rock Vodka and Silver Dagger Vodka in 2009. Both vodkas are owned by Ultimate/ Altitude Beverages and Pressentin’s role is to make both vodkas household names. Silver Dagger is served from a striking, sleek bottle decorated with a raised silver dagger. Keeping with the time-honored symbol of the silver dagger as a badge of honor, Silver Dagger Vodka is designed to reflect and enhance the appreciation for fine spirits. Hard Rock Vodka was introduced in Florida in fall 2011 with a star-studded grand launch event. It has since made a splash in retail locations, hotels, bars and restaurants throughout Florida, and Pressentin will now oversee the brand’s expansion throughout the United States, including California, Nevada, Arizona, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware,

West Virginia and Tennessee. “You have to know and believe in what you are doing,” said Pressentin. “Hard Rock Vodka is a premium, world class vodka imported from England, distilled from the highest quality grain and filtered six times for exceptional smoothness and taste. Similarly, Silver Dagger is distilled through a Terrepure patented process. This combination of filtration and oxidation reveals a smoother, more refined spirit.” Pressentin’s knowledge and passion for what he does extends into his role as an NCAA referee. He’s been a basketball fan for as long as he can remember - playing on various recreational, high school and college sports teams for several years. When he realized he was not able to play as much anymore, he knew he had to find another way to stay connected. He began officiating in 1979 for public and private high school state tournaments in Wisconsin, where he attended college. During his time in Wisconsin, he officiated for more than 20 high school competitions, including championship games. In 1986, Pressentin officiated Division II and III college basketball games in the Midwest, and he has since been a referee

in more than 12 league championship games. Pressentin currently works Division I, II and III including the Big Ten Conference, Horizon League, Sunshine State League and other various leagues in and around the county. “I definitely have to train year-round just to make sure I’m in the best physical shape I can be,” he says. “I have to keep up with some of the best collegiate players in the country.” With more than three decades of experience and more than 2,000 games called, Pressentin has a lot of great experiences to look back on. From officiating the Division III Final Four in 1999 and 2005 to being on the court during the Division II Elite 8 in 2002. But his favorite experience to date? His first Big Ten game. “It was at Wisconsin,” he said. “I was going to the game as a fan when I got a call from the head of officials who told me that one of the officials was having travel issues and wouldn’t be there to start the game. I worked the first half and did a great job. That led me to being hired as a full-time staff member.”

The heat energy also stimulates the production of new collagen over time, resulting in firmer, tighter, smoother skin. The practitioner adjusts the strength of the delivered energy based on feedback from the patient throughout the session. The Pellevé system requires no anesthesia and treatment can be conducted in as little as 15 minutes per area. We simply, apply a thin layer of gel to your face prior to treatment. Most patients experience only a warming sensation on the skin when the Pellevé hand piece is applied. Patients often report that immediately after treatment skin feels tighter similar to Botox. When it takes effect, most patients often experience immediate results, and a reduction in the visibility of wrinkles at the treatment sites. Over the course of the next six months, you will continue to see smoother, more beautiful skin. While many patients see results after just one session of Pellevé, we may recommend multiple treatments to help you achieve your optimal aesthetic goals. The total number of treatments can vary and is based on your individual skin needs. It takes up to two months for the full effects of Pellevé to be seen. A PICK THAT FITS: SELECTING THE RIGHT MARKETING FIRM How a Fortune 500 corporation selects a marketing agency should be little different from how it’s done by a large law practice, an accounting firm, a hospital or medical office. The process needs to be thorough and detailed. A team of executives draft a Request For Proposal (RFP) or a list of requirements, then pore over the responses. The executives interviews candidates, review past work and call references. Eventually, executives hire the best candidate and hope for success. One element often overlooked is culture. It can be a key differencemaker in how a relationship bodes for the long term. This is especially true for professional service providers, like law, accounting or medical practices or an organization like a hospital or multi-store retailer. When these companies hire vendors or contractors, how the two get along is essential to long-term success. Whether they’ll get along often can be determined in the review process. The hiring of a marketing partner ought to be lengthy – even arduous. It should include a complete review of respondents, their qualifications, past successes and – of course – chemistry. What must executives look for in a prospective marketing partner? CULTURE. “Partners” is the key word here. You don’t want a marketing vendor. You want a partner - one whose senior executives are responsive to -- or, better yet, anticipate -- your needs. What’s the work culture of the firm? This isn’t only suit-and-tie versus jeans-and-Polo. Attire isn’t as important as perspective. Do you see eye to eye on approach? Would you be confident with the firm or its
people representing you in public? RELEVANT EXPERIENCE. A marketing firm might claim experience in a broad swath of communications fields and industries. All you need to be worried about is what they know about your industry, your media and generating results related to your business. Do they know where your industry is going -- so they can help your company and its executives become industry pioneers and thought leaders? SOCIAL MEDIA. You expect your marketing communications firm to know advertising, public relations, special event production and promotions. But today, no campaign is complete without a social media component. Whether that’s Website development, blogging, social media like a Facebook fan page or a Twitter, your prospective marketing communications partner must be both versed in social media - and knowledgeable about how similar companies in your industry deploy it. EXAMPLES. If it’s an ad agency, ask to see print, online or television ads they’ve done. If it’s a public relations firm, ask to see the portfolio of clips and links garnered for various clients similar to your own. Also, ask for measurable metrics on their campaigns’ performance. ce. Executives may tell you what you want to hear. Nothing beats seeing examples and results for yourself. REFERENCES. Ask for at least three to five e n references from clients in ar businesses not too dissimilar se from your own. Then, call those references. PIP, ROFILL AND M BREAST IMPLANTS:

The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has sent an alert to all of its members in regard to “PIP”, “Rofill”, and “M” implants. PIP implants were manufactured in France and Rofill implants were manufactured in the Netherlands. M implants, were manufactured in both France and Germany. All of these silicone gel implants have been used throughout Europe and South America. It is safe to assume that they have been used in Central America and other countries where there is a high volume of cosmetic breast surgery. One can also assume that they may have been used in the United States, despite the fact that they were never approved for implantation here. The affected implants are PIP , Rofill and M silicone breast implants that have been used since 2001. There is a strong suspicion that these implants manufactured before 2001 may also be affected. It is important to note that these
50
implants were never approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States. Many women, however, have traveled abroad for plastic surgery and are currently living in the US with these implants. The manufacturers of PIP, Rofill and M breast implants used inferior, industrial grade silicone inside the implants they produced and sold. Industrial grade silicone is a gel that is specifically not to be used in medical practice. It is not known what impurities may exist in this silicone and what damaging effects these impurities can cause in the human body. The silicone gel implants that are FDA approved in the United States are made with a cohesive medical grade silicone gel that is far superior and has been tested and proven to be safe for human implantation. In addition, the PIP, Rofill and M implants have a much higher rate of rupture, according g to French % per year reports as high as 11% in comparison to the silicone breast implants approved in the US , which have a rupture rate of approximately 1% per year. The initial recommendation for P, replacement of PIP, Rofill and M implantss h came from the French ss government regardless ure of symptoms of rupture can or leakage. International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery have recommended that these implants be replaced. Women who have had silicone breast implant surgery in Europe, Central or South America, and feel they may have these implants should consult their medical records, implant ID card, or surgeon’s office to confirm that in fact, they have the affected implants. If so, they should contact a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon for consultation and replacement of these implants as soon as possible. Many people consider dining out and the food they enjoy during this ritual…an event. Dining at Renzo’s of Parkland is an event; one that you should absolutely attend. Lorenzo “Renzo” Sciortino and his wife Sara have been sharing their passion of both heart healthy and traditional Italian cooking for more than 20 years. They share their love of food at their three locations in Boca Raton and one in Parkland. Being greeted at the entrance by Renzo is a treat. His warm genuine smile and outstretched arm with a firm handshake make you feel immediately comfortable. The intimate atmosphere is cozy and softly lit. You are transformed to a small area in Italy without the need to travel. The piano playing softly in the corner is just enough to relax even the weary after a tough work day. Joe Veno, our server, has dedicated himself to our every dining need. He instantly makes you feel that he’s known you forever. His sharp knowledge of the chef’s menu specialties and the wine offerings that change daily keep you engaged and negotiating what is best to order. There are so many wonderful dishes to experience. The long, hot stuffed finger peppers; the stuffed red bell pepper with sausage and risotto deliver an opening to remember. Sweet and spicy without an overpowering finish. The chef offers two versions of calamari; a traditional style dusted and lightly fried or calamari grilled steak-style sliced and served with arugula, kalamata olives and tomatoes. And, for the serious diner who enjoys bone-in style entrees; the Veal chop with portabella mushrooms or the Tomahawk steak are both mouth-watering experiences. Each slice of meat bursts with rich flavor. Extraordinary! And for those who choose a more seafood

The Bolognese with Strigoli pasta served family-style was wonderfully seasoned and light. Life is short and the dessert experience at Renzo’s is unrepentantly rich so don’t think twice. The traditional Italian Cannoli, Tiramisu and Cheesecake are incredible; a dessert lover’s dream. The chef makes a few specialties unique to Renzo’s; the peach and lemon sorbets. They are exceptional. Each sorbet is created inside the fruit and served in a beautiful goblet. Perfect to enjoy at the end of your meal or while sampling a few of the other tempting treats. If you are fortunate to be present at the end of the evening at Renzo’s, you may hear one of the most beautiful voices as the chef heads out of the kitchen. Beyond his ability to create wonderfully tantalizing meals, Chef Giuseppe Carriero may make you tear up listening to his beautiful Italian singing. R U Hot? In Any Room of Your Home... Time For A Mitsubishi Ductless Mini Split
AIR AROUND THE CLOCK
A/C & APPLIANCE SERVICE
Mr. Lang, I don’t normally write letters to companies about their products but I feel compelled to share my experience with the Mitsubishi Split-Type Air Conditioner that you installed for me about 6 months ago. I love it! The Mitsubishi Mr. Slim is the perfect unit for my bedroom; I can super-cool the room in minutes with incredibly flexible airflow direction and fan speed. Also, I can make adjustments from my bedside with the handy remote any time of night or day. Did I mention how quiet the system is? It’s truly impressive!
WESTEND AD
Now the real reason for writing: my allergies have almost disappeared! After living in Florida for 40 years, I was resigned to the fact that my breathing would never be free and clear with all the molds and fungi our climate produces. Well, about a month ago, I realized I could breathe effortlessly through my nose. How can this be? Then it dawned on me, it’s the anti-allergy enzyme filter that I read about in the manual.

While Mr. Slim has many great features, improved air quality is such a fantastic benefit that you might want to recommend this system to your customers with allergy issues. It is truly an outstanding air conditioning system.

AND
another thing... THE AMERICAN MARKET JUST CHANGED FOREVER...NO ONE NOTICED. BY BRUCE TURKEL
This year a startling shift is occurring that will change the demographics of the world’s most important market forever. 2012 is the first year in history that non-Hispanic white births in the United States will no longer be the majority. According to The New York Times, “in the latest sign of the nation’s shifting racial and ethnic composition, births to Asian, black and Hispanic women in the United States are on the verge of surpassing births to non-Hispanic whites.” Please don’t kick yourself for not noticing. How many people caught up in the wave of history actually see what’s going on while it’s happening? As Marshall McLuhan wrote, “We don’t know who discovered water, but we know it wasn’t the fish.” You see, there’s a reason why hindsight is 20/20. There’s a reason why the words should’ve, would’ve and could’ve are usually accompanied by a Three Stooges’ slap to the forehead. And there’s a reason why you should pay attention to this new American reality. It’s no longer enough to look at things the way they were and wonder why. Instead, look at things the way they’re going to be and wonder where? As in, where is the opportunity? After all, if minorities accounted for 48% of all births in the US in the 12 months that ended in July 2008, then business as usual is no longer business as usual anymore. And if you haven’t changed to embrace these new consumers then, pardon me for saying it, but you’re talking to ghosts. Specifically, the ghosts of markets past. By the way, before you think this is only a domestic phenomenon, major demographic changes are not just occurring within The United States of America but in all of the Americas. In direct contrast to what is going on in much of the rest of the world, Latin America’s economy is soaring. Mexico and the 19 countries of Central and South America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean (not including Cuba) are seeing year over year economic growth. And for the first time in history, this hemispheric growth is not simply due to the exploitation of natural resources but directly related to the ascension of the middle class. In fact, this demographics’ purchasing power is surpassing that of the upper classes for the first time ever. What is required today is bold new creativity and leadership
based on the realities of the hemisphere the way it’s going to be, not the way it was, and certainly not the way old school marketers would like it to be. What is called for in these exciting yet uncertain times is a new outlook that takes into account the way these emerging consumers pay attention, consume information, make purchase decisions, and ultimately, buy. It’s not like the clues are always easy to decipher. Way back in 2007, the research firm Information Resources found that salsa outsold ketchup in the United States by $163.4 million. Yet the very same year another market researcher, NPD Group, reported that 48% of households used ketchup in a typical two-week period, three times the number that used salsa. And The Wall Street Journal reported that condiment giant Heinz declined to take a public position, saying instead, “We believe there is room for both in the refrigerator and that consumers don’t view the two products interchangeably.” Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m not suggesting that simply because these new consumers represent a formerly minority demographic that minority marketing techniques are the right tools to reach them. What I’m suggesting (perhaps “suggesting” is too subtle, perhaps screaming from the mountaintops is a better description of what I’m trying to do here) is that — from advertising to politics, retail to housing — a new understanding of the new majority is essential. Because, if I haven’t made it clear enough so far, these new consumers ARE the majority. Understanding and embracing these new consumers’ use of technology, language, cultural cues, and financial tools — both online and off — will ultimately determine who will prevail and who will be sitting by the wayside, wondering what the hell just happened.
