t’s March. So we have six more months. And how many debates have there been so far? I must tell you that I do miss Herman Cain. His 9-9-9 plan was so brilliant. And Michelle Bachman. Michelle was lovely. She spoke well. She’s attractive. I really didn’t get her husband, but who am I to judge? Now we are down to Newt, Mitt, Rick and Ron. The Republican version of the Beatles. I can see Mitt as Paul, Newt as John, Rick as George and, of course, Ron as Ringo. I can see Mitt singing... “Can’t buy me love, love, Can’t buy me love. I’ll-buyyou-diamond-rings my friend, if-it-makes-you-votefor-me, I’ll get you anything my friend, if-you-cast-yourvote-properly, Cause all I care about is the money, but money can’t buy me love… or votes.” ”I also can see Newt belting out “I am the Walrus.” “I-am-he-as-you-are-meand-Mitt-is-me-and-I-amhe. New-newt-achoo, newnewt-achoo, I am the Walrus, I am the Egg Man, I am the Newt man”. I am trying to add some levity to a serious discussion. More and more people are frightened about the future of the United States. We have candidates on both the left and right that are complete ideologues. Are the Republicans correct? Are the Democrats correct? The answer to both questions is yes. Should the very rich pay additional money in taxes, even if it is just for a 5 year period, with the goal to balance our federal budget? Should we develop the pipeline to become energy efficient and create hundreds of thousands of jobs? Should we dramatically lower

I

GARY’S PUB LETTER federal spending and cut waste? Should we attempt to take money out of politics? Should we become tough with China and our other trading partners to create a more equitable trade policy? Should we enforce our current regulations instead of creating new regulations that we do not have resources to enforce? Should we place additional resources to train our citizens that are currently receiving unemployment benefits? You may be reading this article and asking yourself the question, “I am one person. Can I really make a difference”? The answer is yes. You probably know a politician or two. Collectively, we have power. Today our politicians and candidates have one goal in mind – to be reelected. Therefore, they feel the need to be hard right or hard left. The trouble is that we live in a world of compromises. We do it in our business and personal life every day.

MARCH 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

When did compromise become such a toxic word? We all know that politics start locally. We can have a voice and a strong one at that. My hope is that you stand up with me and tell our politicians that unless they start compromising and getting things done, they cannot count on our money anymore. I don’t enjoy writing about politics because it can be so divisive. However I do feel that we need to raise our voices now so that our children can continue to live in the greatest country on the face of this earth. And while “Yesterday” all of our troubles seem so far away, “Imagine” what we can accomplish if we work together with a smart, efficient government that truly puts Americans first instead of politicians first.

PUB LETTER BELIEVE - DREAM BIG – GO GREEN!

As we move into the third month of the year many of us are looking forward to either basketball’s March Madness, Spring Break or St. Patrick’s Day. Or maybe all three! As for me, I am excited to have two South Florida professional teams in the playoff hunt in their respective sports. The Panthers are hanging in there and look to make the NHL playoffs after many years of coming up short and the Heat look to return to the NBA Finals and bring home another championship. You Gotta Believe! Out of the state legislature come the new districts for our representatives and no casinos. I guess they didn’t agree with the idea of – “if you build it, they will come!” Speaking of a new facility, the Marlins get ready to open up their

With St. Patrick’s Day on a Saturday this month, many will be celebrating all night long. You can check out our “Top 10 places to go” in this issue for going for the green with family and friends alike. Being half Irish, I am sure to be partaking in the festivities somewhere, so Erin go Bragh – Gaelic translated as Ireland Forever! Lastly, I pay tribute to a friend, fellow Philadelphian and former South Florida resident, Angelo Dundee, who left us last month. He was best known for training Sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali. I was fortunate to have met Angelo on several occasions at events and even had coffee with him a few times at our local Starbucks, when he lived in the city. Compassionate, cordial, humble and a real gentleman are just a few words to describe this

Let’s hope they field a team many will want to watch – and potentially win a championship again. You can always dream big! As for doing things big, Facebook is planning their IPO (Initial Public Offering) in the months ahead. Word on Wall Street is they may have the biggest IPO ever with over $100 billion in value – yes that’s billion with a “B”. Not to be outdone in the media, Apple is planning on launching the new I-Pad3 this month. Their company may surpass the $500 billion level in market capitalization. Way to go Steve. CHANCELLOR, RAY FERRARO, JR., J.D.

Henderson Behavioral Health honors Community Icons; Ferrero and Hanbury to be honored ON MARCH 31 AT THE HYATT REGENCY PIER SIXTY-SIX IN FORT LAUDERDALE, HENDERSON BEHAVIORAL HEALTH WILL HONOR NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT, DR. GEORGE L. HANBURY II, AND CHANCELLOR RAY FERRERO JR., J.D. Henderson Behavioral Health (HBH) is the oldest and largest, community-based not-for-profit behavioral healthcare system in South Florida. Since 1953 Henderson has helped hundreds of thousands of children, adults and families. Last year alone, Henderson provided over 600,000 services to 21,323 individuals. We strive to be a “community problem solver,” and have focused our efforts on Florida’s most urgent behavioral health and human services needs. In addition to providing a full-range of evidence-based behavioral healthcare services to all ages, Henderson is also committed to creating and managing a system of housing for adults and children. Henderson operates over 650 housing units including supportive housing, permanent housing for

those with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders, a safe-haven and emergency homeless shelter, residential treatment and group homes. For 59 years, Henderson Behavioral Health has helped people in South Florida discover new beginnings in their lives. By providing the necessary supports and services, dreams are realized. One example is John, an 18 year old man who was a foster child for several years in one of Henderson’s group homes. He dreamt of the time when he would graduate from high school and begin to live the life of a young adult. A young adult who has the things in life we all want; friends, a family, a job and meaningful activities. Thanks to Henderson’s support and John’s hard work; John is

now living independently, has friends, and attends a local college. Thanks to the generous people in South Florida, Henderson was able to help John become an independent young adult. One of the ways Henderson raises money to help people like John is through the annual gala. The organizers hope you will join them for this fun event being held on Saturday, March 31, at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six, honoring Nova Southeastern University President Dr. George L. Hanbury II, and Chancellor Ray Ferrero Jr., J.D. CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOL 954-309-6321

WESTON Andrei Nana Keeps On Running RELAY

BY ART SBARSKY

Andrei Nana, the runner, remembers the moment well. “Because I was not officially introduced yet to the public, it was funny to see the looks I was getting from many of the Relay participants, probably wondering what’s wrong with the bold guy running in short shorts? About 45 minutes later, the DJ announced the existence of a guy running on the track who planned to run the entire night. I guess the general attitude was one of disbelief and some sort of curiosity. Soon, I started to be asked ‘will I really run the entire time.’ Most people dismissed my ‘yes’ answer.” Running through the night, Andrei ran for 14 straight hours, covering 240 laps for a total of 60 miles. But Andrei was not really out there alone. He was part of PINK HEARTS, one of the teams participating in the annual Relay For Life event. Beth Tache, the team captain, met Andrei about three years ago through a mutual friend. “Andrei was organizing a 100 mile run/walk from Jacksonville and needed some help,” says Tache. “My

22

MARCH 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

friend told him about me and how I am involved in a few organizations – including the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life -- and that I put together events and possibly I could help out. We met to discuss his walk/run and our friendship was started. I invited him to be part of the Relay For Life and join PINK HEARTS.” Everyone who participates in Relay has a personal story to tell. Andrei’s is a perfect example as it was the motivation for his running all night: “to honor my mother who has been battling cancer for over three years and in memory of my friend Claude Matasa who passed last year after a five year battle with cancer. Both my mother and Claude are examples of individuals who were tasked by destiny to deal with a devastating disease and fight against all odds. Cancer changes the dynamic of life. Suddenly my mother had to learn to fight for her life and not give up, to conquer fear, to attempt to stay positive in the face of tremendous obstacles and to understand that in this fight others can help you. Before I decided to join the event, I briefly

looked at the Relay For Life web site and had a slim understanding of what was supposed to happen but I didn’t begin to imagine its emotional intensity.” That was last year’s Relay For Life of Weston event when over $210,000 was raised. This year, the Tenth Annual Relay For Life of Weston will be held April 14/15th at Cypress Bay High School. Andrei is planning on running for 24 hours this time, accompanied by lots of others who are passionate about the cause. Team Captain Beth says she’s happy to have Andrei back on her team. “When word gets out about what he is setting out to do, I am hopeful it will bring more attention to Relay and in turn raise more money in the battle to find a cure for cancer.” For more information regarding Relay For Life of Weston, including how you can participate and/or help with donations, please contact Ross Sabath, Event Chair, at 954-309-6321 or westonrelayforlife@comcast.net. “THESE COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE leaders in the community, HAVE the utmost integrity AND PROFESSIONALISM AND A REAL PASSION FOR making a difference IN THESE CHILDREN’S LIVES.” have the utmost integrity and professionalism, and a real passion for making a difference in these children’s lives,” expressed Sadaka. “Many of them are my friends and I feel very fortunate to be able to work with them on this great cause.” Committee members are charged with individual fundraising goals, seeing generous donors willing to commit $1,000 to the effort. Each $1,000 contribution allows one underserved middle or high school student to attend the Miramar based program for an entire school year. In addition, more dollars means more programming and more scholarships. “This initiative has meant so much to our Foundation,” explained Taylor. “In these times, to know that our most significant program is funded for the entire year is unbelievable. Plus, now we can create a more comprehensive program for the kids with the additional dollars. We added a DJ program two years ago, a spoken word poetry program, increased our class size and now the incredible opportunity for some of these kids to earn college scholarships.” Supporters of the Steven Douglas Associates “Read to Succeed Initiative” will not only get the intrinsic benefit of knowing that they helped a struggling student improve their reading skills, but there is a little added incentive to give. Each

$1,000 donor will be invited to two Hoffman, Scot Hunter, Dan Husley, exclusive VIP events hosted by Jack Jackintelle, Mark Koch, Joe La Taylor at Smoke on the Water, the Rocca, David Lister, Scott Mager, Weston based cigar bar located in the Michael Marquez, Jack McCarthy, Town Center. The first event will take place on Wednesday, March 28th from 5:30 – 7:30 PM. “We understand that people give out of the kindness of their hearts, but we want to show our appreciation as well,” Sadaka stated. “The events at Smoke on the Water have been huge hits each year. People enjoyed a good cigar, food and drinks and had a chance to hang out with an NFL legend. Not STEVE AND LORI SADAKA WITH KATINA & JASON TAYLOR a bad deal!” “It was great to actually meet the people who supported our efforts,” Taylor Steve Menzer, Steve Nudelberg, added. “Having a chance to thank Adam Rabinowitz, Steve Sadaka, people personally rather than just Drew Saito, Matt Shore, Adam seeing names on a spread sheet Silverman, Steve Strumpf, Cameron was a lot of fun. You see how many Theil, Chad Van Allen and Mark caring people are here in Weston and Viner. To learn more about how you really throughout South Florida.” Russel Reading Room committee can support the Jason Taylor members include: Matt Beck, Alan Reading Room through the Steven Berger, Elliott Borkson, Robinson Douglas Associates “Read to Brown, Elizabeth Cambareri, Joey Succeed” Initiative, visit www. Dreaming Of A Life Without Cancer Should Be More Than A Dream BY KEVIN LANE

O

n Saturday, April 21, 2012 friends and supporters of Can’t Stomach Cancer: The Foundation of Debbie’s Dream (CSC) will attend a very special event… the 3rd Annual Dream Makers Gala. The Dinner Dance will take place at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa at 3555 South Ocean Drive in Hollywood. Co-Chairs Jason Chalik, Susie Cope and Ani Solarana have made it perfectly clear to “… expect the unexpected!” Tickets are $175.00 per person, and sponsorship opportunities range from $25,000 to $600. If this year’s event is anything like last year’s, it should be a huge success. With more than 450 guests in attendance, the foundation raised $180,000 for stomach cancer awareness and research, all while enjoying an evening of cocktails, scrumptious hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions, dinner, dancing and an update on the work of CSC. This year is sure to be just as successful thanks, in part, to their Title Sponsor Proskauer Rose Law Firm; Platinum Sponsors Equity One and the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa; and Gold Sponsors Sheridan HealthCare, Broward HCA Hospitals and Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort. CSC has secured wonderful auction items including a portrait session with world renowned photographer Bradford at his Palm Beach Studio plus a $5,000.00 gift certificate for a 20” museum quality portrait; an Asian cuisine catered cocktail reception for up to 100 people, including staff; two seats on the Goodyear Blimp; a six night stay at a Breckenridge, Colorado condo; and a week’s stay in a luxury vacation home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

advocacy in South Florida. However, Debbie realized that the fight against stomach cancer was bigger than her and her community and needed a broader stage. To fulfill her dream of a world free of stomach cancer and the pain it creates, Debbie initiated a call to action, a rallying cry, a declaration once and for all that as a nation and a world we will stand up to this disease. Thus, Can’t Stomach Cancer: The Foundation of Debbie’s Dream was born and has emerged as the leader for this under-recognized and underfunded disease. Recently, Debbie took her message to a wider audience when she flew to New York to film a guest segment on the Doctor Oz show. Zelman spoke with Dr. Oz about the symptoms of the disease, the rising statistics, and the proper nutrition to lower a person’s chances of being diagnosed with stomach cancer. She also spoke about her own personal battle with stomach cancer. “This Doctor Oz episode is so important to help get the word out to the public about stomach cancer. If it is detected early, there are more treatment options and the chances of survival are greater,” Zelman explained. “Our mission and dream at Can’t Stomach Cancer: The Foundation of Debbie’s Dream is to

CANT STOMACH CANCER

“Debbie Zelman, founder of CSC, is a pioneer for raising awareness about stomach cancer. She embodies such extraordinary passion for this organization and all that it represents,” said CSC Board Member Robin Moselle. Her story is an example of discovering that “a bend in the road is not the end of the road.” It’s a very personal story… Debbie Zelman is a rare individual who turned personal misfortune into an opportunity to make a difference in the world. In April 2008, when she was a forty year old mother of three young children, a wife, and a practicing attorney, Debbie was diagnosed with advanced, incurable stage IV stomach cancer. She was told that there were very few effective treatment options and that her chances of being alive in five years were less than five percent. In the course of searching for treatment options, she quickly learned how difficult this disease is to

detect and treat, and the outcome is often grim. Working closely with her doctors in academic and community settings, Debbie began responding to treatment. She then decided to use her experience, skills, tenacity, and broad network of friends and supporters to start a movement to raise awareness about the disease, fund research, and help other patients. “For the person diagnosed with stomach cancer, there is an urgency to get the best treatment immediately. However, there are few sources of dependable information. In addition, there is little research being conducted on stomach cancer for a variety of reasons, including a lack of funding and a limited number of doctors specializing in this disease,” Debbie explained. In April 2009 Debbie started Debbie’s Dream Foundation, a nonprofit organization that became a strong voice for stomach cancer

help people understand what the symptoms are as well as the risk factors and to learn that early detection is critical. When stomach cancers patients anywhere in the world are diagnosed, we help them to quickly learn about the disease and educate them about their options to help them get the best treatment available. Our goal is also to fund research directly and indirectly that will lead to better, more effective treatments for patients and to ultimately improve their prognosis,” Zelman added. In reflecting back to the time when she first heard the words, “You have stomach cancer,” Debbie recounted some of the milestones she’s reached to date. In May 2011 CSC held the first ever Stomach Cancer Patient Education Symposium which featured lectures by renowned doctors from leading cancer centers and was viewed internationally via webcast. “These lectures are available on our website along with numerous resources, related links, and other information,” Debbie noted. This year the symposium will be held at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 10 am to 3 pm. The symposium is open to the public and free of charge, but registration is required. For more information please visit our website and check under future events. patients, their families, caregivers, and health care providers on its toll-free hotline at (855) 475-1200. Patients can speak to each other to share knowledge and learn from each other’s experiences. CSC now has events across the country and helps patients all over the world. This is quite a list of significant accomplishments, particularly since it all started with the cancer diagnosis in 2008! Some startling facts include the astounding revelation that stomach cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide - second in men and fourth in women; each year nearly 930,000 people worldwide are diagnosed with stomach cancer, and approximately 700,000 die. Approximately 22,000 Americans are diagnosed with stomach cancer each year, and more than 10,000 will die within the first year. Most people know very little about this disease, and there are currently few resources and support services for stomach cancer patients, a situation that Debbie Zelman is changing on a daily basis… Visit www.CantStomachCancer. org to learn more about this devastating disease, find out how you can become involved, ask questions, volunteer, host an event, purchase merchandise, and/or make a donation. ENEE ANDRIOLE DESIGNS

OSCAR JEWELRY

JEWELRY DESIGNER RENEE ANDRIOLE’S LINE OF SEVERE DESIGNS COULD LITERALLY CUT YOUR HEART OUT. But come February she will be sharing the beauty of her ‘Mended Heart’ design in the Luxury Gifting Suite for the 84th Academy Awards (OSCARS). All attending celebrities will receive one of her ‘Mended Heart Necklaces’ in their swag bag. The piece is a shapely, elongated heart with a seductive curvature that is ‘broken’ down the middle. The piece is made entirely of sterling silver and laced together with gold wire. Every piece is made by hand and unique to the individual. Renee’s pieces are detailed with artisanal craftsmanship you won’t easily find in most stores today. “I want to create pieces that evoke an emotion with the wearer, something that means something….it may be a different message for everyone but its birth began with two hands creating something. I think that is very special.” Asked what her ‘Mended Heart Necklace’ meant to her she explained, “Everyone has had a broken heart, something that disappoints and devastates, but the beauty of the broken heart comes from the strength in the mended heart. Our ability to endure and heal is what gives us our spirit, not the pain that brought us there.” Andriole is known for her edgy designs that blur the boundaries between weaponry and wearable art. Pieces like her ‘Sickle Ring’ and ‘Ball and Chain Necklace’ may get you stopped in the airport, but there is a delicate hue found in every piece, even the dangerous ones. Renee’s pieces create awareness

when worn. The reaction between metal and skin is integral to her designs. Renee also adds a little humor by including instructions with her edgier pieces such as: Be Mindful when Wearing this Piece Don’t flail hands around innocent bystanders Use caution when using the Restroom And always…..Remember you are wearing a piece of art. Illustrious and Avant garde, provocative but elegant, Renee’s designs bask in rebellious glamour. Renee came to South Florida from New York. She spent her high school years in Weston, and attended Western High School. She graduated from Florida International University with a Degree in Fine Art and a focus in small metalwork. She went on to show her wearable art and small sculpture in galleries around Miami. With her focus devoted to her jewelry line she moved to Los Angeles to grow her business and build on her art. At the end of the day, being an artist who designs according to what she feels rather than trying to be a “marketing genius” is really what makes Andriole and her work dangerous. ITNESS AND WELL-BEING-A REAL LIFE CHANGER

FITNESS ARTICLE

BY MARK STURMAN

Keeping a fitness routine is hard to do. For many, exercise has become a tough obligation to fulfill when it should be a really fun part of your day. I once viewed exercise as a chore and had difficulty meeting my fitness goals, but with a fresh approach to the task, I became inspired, and so much so, that I founded Weston’s newest workout party hot spot, Fitness 54 in Weston Town Center. The Fitness Party began in my garage with a fun approach to working out. In additional to acquiring the best equipment around, my garage environment included motivating video on large screens and music that soon attracted friends and fitness pros. Through this passion and garage antics, a new concept in fitness was born. My own workout regimen proved to be the answer to years of excuses for fitness funk. To engage long term, your workout needs to be upbeat, exciting and fun to keep you motivated. Interval training keeps you, your brain and your body guessing, “What’s next?” That is why it is important to switch up your routine. To engage the participant long term, fitness classes can, in fact, take the ‘work’ out of workout. When we’re engaged in an environment that we like, for instance, hiking through beautiful scenery, our fitness benefit is a byproduct of the fun activity. Similarly, while enjoying the benefits of a solid workout, time goes by fast when you are in small group settings, listening to motivating music and watching inspiring videos, with expert coaching to keep you motivated and having a good time. At Fitness 54, for example, the DJ podium and set up bring extra energy and fun to the party. Exercising in a group environment keeps your morale high and allows for a friendly competition among the crowd. It’s important for everyone to be encouraged to exercise at their own pace, but it is proven that with

38

support of those around you, one strives to do better. Add the support of experts in exercise, and you’ve got a winning formula for continued success in fitness. Like every workout should, a well-organized class must inspire to bring about long lasting results. Exercising in a team atmosphere gives a feeling of camaraderie that works magic and truly motivates everyone. With New Year’s resolutions subsiding, I know fitness health becomes more challenging. A fun, party environment helps jump the motivation hurdles and conquer. Besides enjoying the benefits of the fun party environment while working out, I will say my top advice is to set aside a time of day you know you cannot make excuses for. Call up a friend so the two of you can motivate one another. Blast the music and switch up your work out to keep it new. You should not run the same mile every day. Be sure to incorporate cardio and strength training – this varied workout will keep you coming back to do more (which is the key), stay in shape and make you stronger. Fitness 54 is located at 1717 Main Street in Weston, Fla. It is a fitness center with a fast, fun and fresh approach to exercise. Please visit www.fitness54.net or call 954-389-3485 for more information. Spectacular design, world class equipment, live DJ, electro-charged lights, music to make you move, video to inspire. Making fitness fun. The antidote for the boring workout. Fitness 54 changes everything, including you!

VETERAN MAKEOVER THE DRAGO FAMILY

Veteran Honored Through Military Room Makeover

FAVA DESIGN GROUP GIVES FORT LAUDERDALE CHAMBER VETERAN A NEW ROOM.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber honored Chief Arthur Drago for his remarkable 24 year Navy career. Arthur was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba after 9/11 to participate in Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). In the wake of the September 11th attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, these operations provided assistance against terrorists. Today, Arthur Drago serves as President of the Chief Petty Officers Association of Miami, (CPOA.) As one of nine military families selected from Dade and Broward, the Fort Lauderdale Chamber’s award earned Arthur a “New Room for the New Year” courtesy of top Interior Design Expert, Joe Fava of Fava Design Group. The Military Room Makeover Program sponsored by the Dania Beach Design District and Luxe Interiors & Design Magazine honors 9 communities and 9 military families with free room makeovers. The Designer met with Arthur Drago, his wife Gloria, daughters Megan, Natalie and son AJ to discuss redoing their living room for the room makeover project. Arthur’s family took great pleasure in overseeing the remodel plans. Arthur said, “A veteran’s family sacrifices a lot. They’re rarely rewarded for what they’ve gone through. It’s meaningful to give this gift to my family.” The family had been experiencing tough times. Arthur’s wife lost her job. Arthur lost his business and they recently lost a relative. Captivated by the family’s story; Joe decided to design an environment to help change their luck. He expanded the project to combine their dining and living room into a great room. Fava said, “By opening up their space, positive energy can flow freely through their home to give them a fresh start and a positive outlook so great things will come their way.” Joe’s engaging personality brought inspiration to all.

The Designer got donations from many elite industry names to insure the project was fit for a king. It’s hard to tell who’s more excited about the remodel project; the family, designer, Dania Beach Design District or those that donated services and resources to help make the designer’s vision a reality. Fava said, “The family’s a pleasure to work with. I hope this project gives them a new beginning. It’s been a rewarding experience. I’m inspired by the collaborative efforts of so many to create this unique space for the Drago’s.” Craig Urbine said, “The Dania Beach Design District is proud to support a program that honors our veterans and showcases amazing talent from the design community.”

Dania Beach Chamber Veteran Honored by Top Designer with Military Room Makeover

THE DANIA BEACH CHAMBER AWARDED MILITARY VETERAN, BRANDON PAQUET WITH A “NEW ROOM” PART OF A “MILITARY MAKEOVER” PROGRAM. The makeover comes courtesy of Kendall Marcelle, Kendall Marcelle Design Associates through the Military Room Makeover Program organized by the Dania Beach Design District, sponsored by Luxe Interiors & Design Magazine. Nine Florida Chambers of Commerce, cities and organizations selected nine veterans to represent their group to receive a free room makeover. Nine top designers were selected to donate their services and resources to make each veteran’s dream come true. Brandon Paquet, Dania’s honored veteran, served in the Air Force for eight years as a Crew Chief to combat the Global War on Terrorism after September 11, flying to ensure that all military transport and fighter aircraft remained refueled. He’s currently stationed at Homestead Air Reserve Base as a Crew Chief. The Air Force inspired Brandon to become a commercial pilot at Miami International.

BRANDON PAQUET AND FAMILY

“I love serving in the military,” says Brandon “The US has freedoms that other countries dream about. The brave people who risk it all make these freedoms possible.” Brandon recently asked Erin Parker to marry him. The couple’s engaged and thrilled about their new room makeover. Designer Kendall Marcelle, Kendall Marcelle Design Associates said,” The Military Room Makeover program’s been a great experience. We’re honored to work with Brandon and his fiancée Erin. We bonded instantly and they embraced the entire design process. Their favorite time of year.....Halloween and autumn, inspired our color palette. Double giant orange framed mirrors added a touch of drama and bold color. Subtle shades and textures of autumn were added such as; the brown suede sofa, wenge wood entertainment unit, a natural wood cocktail table, chestnut colored rattan dining set and beautiful birch tree painting, which reflect hues of fall. Brandon we salute you and the Dania Beach Design District’s endless efforts to make the veterans Military Room Makeover program a huge success.” Brandon has loved the makeover process as well. “When I was first selected for the Military Room Makeover, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The best part’s been how wonderful everyone involved has been. It’s nice to know that people really care about veterans. The Dania Beach Chamber, Designer Kendall Marcelle, her team and the Dania Beach Design District have put their hearts into it! Life can be difficult at times but, projects like this makes everything worthwhile. We love the room Kendall Marcelle created and thank all from the bottom of our hearts.” LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | MARCH 2012

R U Hot? In Any Room of Your Home... Time For A Mitsubishi Ductless Mini Split

AIR AROUND THE CLOCK

A/C & APPLIANCE SERVICE

Mr. Lang, I don’t normally write letters to companies about their products but I feel compelled to share my experience with the Mitsubishi Split-Type Air Conditioner that you installed for me about 6 months ago. I love it! The Mitsubishi Mr. Slim is the perfect unit for my bedroom; I can super-cool the room in minutes with incredibly flexible airflow direction and fan speed. Also, I can make adjustments from my bedside with the handy remote any time of night or day. Did I mention how quiet the system is? It’s truly impressive!

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Now the real reason for writing: my allergies have almost disappeared! After living in Florida for 40 years, I was resigned to the fact that my breathing would never be free and clear with all the molds and fungi our climate produces. Well, about a month ago, I realized I could breathe effortlessly through my nose. How can this be? Then it dawned on me, it’s the anti-allergy enzyme filter that I read about in the manual.

While Mr. Slim has many great features, improved air quality is such a fantastic benefit that you might want to recommend this system to your customers with allergy issues. It is truly an outstanding air conditioning system.

significant bragging rights. Just don’t tell your cardiologist when you visit—or maybe you should. With lots of TV’s to watch March Madness basketball, Georgie’s appeals to visitors and locals alike. TIP: Lots of places say it, but Georgie’s may well have the best burgers in Florida.

BIG BEAR BREWING COMPANY

1

Award winning beer. Mouth watering burgers. Volcano Shrimp. Need we say more? Big Bear Brewing Company has been wowing palates and satisfying thirsts since July 1996. The Coral Springs institution is well-known for its food, ambience and its five award winning micro brews. Check out the Hibernation Pale Ale, if you’re a beer connoisseur you’ll appreciate the crispness and taste. Big Bear is the type of place that makes you feel instantly at home in. Friendly staff, lively conversation and a menu that won’t break the bank. So even if you don’t win that office

JACARANDA BAR & GRILL 8283 W Broward Blvd Plantation, FL 33324 (954) 423-1811

Three words best describe the Jacaranda: great neighborhood bar. Known for its friendly staff and lively crowd, the Jacaranda is just a very cool place. Fun, relaxed with a nice mix of Italian food. TIP: People rave about the pizza.

4

LANDLUBBER’S RAW BAR AND GRILL 1851 N Pine Island Rd Plantation, FL 33322 (954) 473-2884

Landlubber’s is a sports bar. And we mean that as a compliment. So if you love sports and enjoy mingling with knowledgeable fans, Landlubber’s is your place. With 50 big screen TV’s and a very pleasing menu, Landlubber’s has been a local favorite for 20 years. Family owned and operated, Landlubber’s is well-known for being involved in the local community and as a result has earned loyal fans. TIP: If you’re brave enough indulge with the cheese fries with bacon. But be prepared. It’s over a pound of crispy fries with melted jack and cheddar cheese.

drink and watch sports. It’s also a great place to take the family and a good place to unwind with friends. We also like the prices which are reasonable. TIP: Cowboy salad. Steak and greens—you can feel half good about what your eating.

6 10 9 BEST 7 RENDEZVOUS WATERFRONT BAR & GRILL

2525 Marina Bay Dr. W. Fort Lauderdale, FL (954) 797-0054

We admit, we’re shallow. At first, we fell for the name. Who doesn’t want a rendezvous? But when we visited we were impressed. Excellent burgers, good atmosphere, friendly service. TIP: Sit outside.

17 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. #380 Fort Lauderdale, FL (954) 530-4867

5

1744 Main St Weston, FL 33326 (954) 349-2100

J.G bills himself as an adventurer and purveyor of fine libations. That intrigues us. In fact, as a fan of adventure of fine libations, we just had to check it out. And J.G delivered. First, the décor is truly amazing. We love the Oscar Wilde saying etched into the walls and we really loved the Guinness. This is an authentic Irish Pub with its proprietor having studied the art of the Irish Pub in Dublin. The result is an outstanding establishment inspired by legendary Irish pubs. TIP: The owner worked for DiageoGuinness. Don’t miss the Guinness.

1095 SE 17 St Fort Lauderdale, FL (954) 828-2755

We’ve been to Waxy’s in Keene, New Hampshire. We’ve been to Waxy’s in Foxborough, Mass (tip don’t root for the Yankees while in Foxborough), but we love the one in our own backyard. Waxy’s is an authentic Irish bar— classy, fun, and you simply can’t beat the potato leek soup. TIP: Don’t root for the Yankees in Foxborough. That bears repeating.

DA BIG KAHUNA

J.G. MCGUINNESS IRISH PUB & RESTAURANT

WAXY O’CONNOR’S IRISH PUB & EATERY

Like the song says—everybody loves the Big Kahuna. When considering great watering holes, you do need to include a little diversity and Da Big Kahuna provides a respite from the typical bar scene. Relaxing, tropical and authentically Hawaiian, a visit to Da Big Kahuna is a chance to escape the daily grind. TIP: You had us at the Kalua Pork.

8

CAROLINA ALE HOUSE 2618 Weston Rd Weston, FL 33331 (954) 217-1233

Carolina is a great place to eat,

10

PARROT LOUNGE 911 Sunrise Lane Fort Lauderdale (954) 563-1493

If you appreciate classic Florida watering holes, this is your place. They are a dying breed. But the Parrot is very much alive and a great place to spend St. Patty’s Day. The drinks are tropical, the location is wonderful and the food is good as well. The Parrot Lounge bills itself as world famous and it is. When it comes to classic bars in Lauderdale—the Parrot is at the top of the list. TIP: We like the homemade chili. We can be talked into the mozzarella sticks, but we prefer the chili.

BANK PHILANTHROPY Even during the recent recession and the slow recovery that has followed, many civic and charitable organizations and other non-profits have not experienced a downturn in support from the banking industry. That includes Broward County where large multi-state banks and locally based banks have long been among the leaders in providing financial support and volunteer service by employees. One example is The Pantry of Broward, which provides food and support services to senior citizens who are in need. No matter the economic climate, numerous banks have remained important supporters with contributions of money and volunteer work in food drives and other programs, said Catherine “Penny” Loughan, CEO of The Pantry of Broward. In particular, Loughan said that Bank of America “been our biggest cheerleader.” Lori Chevy, Bank of America’s market president for Broward County said: “In an effort to make opportunity possible for organizations that address critical social and economic needs like hunger, I am proud the bank has provided support to this outstanding organization.” Like many other banks, Bank of America bases its decisions on where to spend philanthropic dollars largely on what it sees as the potential impact throughout a local community.

“IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE OPPORTUNITY POSSIBLE FOR ORGANIZATIONS THAT ADDRESS CRITICAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC NEEDS LIKE HUNGER, I AM PROUD THE BANK HAS PROVIDED SUPPORT TO THIS OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION.” The Pantry of Broward’s impact is over several generations of families because many of its services are for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. Banks generally do not release localized data on their contributions to charitable and civic organizations, schools, hospitals, museums, performing arts centers and various other non-profits. Lynne Wines is president of First Southern Bank and is the current chairman of the United Way of Broward County.

MARCH 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

She said First Southern has maintained its levels of community support and that the banking industry has remained a major supporter of the United Way. First Southern is headquartered in Boca Raton and has two branches in Broward County. “Maybe some banks have had to cut back a bit on financial support (for non-profits),” Wines said. “But I don’t think there have been any reductions in man and woman hours. Bankers realize how much their support is needed.” The real estate crisis has led to a significant downturn in overall bank earnings, and surviving banks are more tightly monitoring their charitable contributions and other spending. The nation’s banking industry had a composite net loss of $9.8 billion in 2009 but has since been slowly returning to profitability, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Banks based in Florida had composite annual net losses between 2008 and 2010 before they began posting quarterly profits last year, according to the FDIC. But many banks are still earning less than prior to the recession and still spending considerable time and money on workouts of problem real estate loans. One constant factor in good times and bad is that banks’ civic and charitable donations and

BUSINESS&money

services help them comply with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). That federal law requires banks to have programs that provide loans and other services to lowincome and moderate-income individuals and individuals within their geographic markets. Another constant is that officials of non-profits should have precise answers when bankers ask for details about operations, goals and services— especially overhead costs. “We need to know the extent of service to the local community, and how many dollars go all the way through to those who are supposed to benefit,” said Cyril “Sid” Spiro, chairman of Regent Bank which is based in Davie. Regent can find that information partly because Spiro and other Regent officials are members of boards of directors of several Broward civic and charitable organizations. That includes the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, of which Spiro is a former chairman. “We provide donations and we tell our employees to assist with programs and to don’t be just a member,” he said. Working with civic groups brings Regent into contact with other businesses that can become its clients, Spiro said. Meanwhile, some Regent clients have learned about and joined civic groups through their dealings with the bank. BB&T has a review process, using information from its bankers and clients, before it determines levels of support for civic groups, said Antonio (Tony) Coley, the bank’s city executive for Broward. “We need to see how our dollars will be leveraged and how they will make an impact in

Bank’s civic support, said Jane Gilbert, the bank’s community affairs officer for South Florida. Wells Fargo, based in San Francisco, gained its first branches in Florida when it bought Wachovia Bank in 2008. It changed signs on those branches last year. “The community programs we added (from the merger) are very similar to what we have had at Wells Fargo.” Gilbert said. She said Wells Fargo increased its community affairs financial contributions in South Florida in 2011, compared with 2010. In 2011, Wells Fargo contributed nearly $3.5 million and its employees volunteered more than 10,000m hours in support of non-profits and schools in South Florida.

BANK PHILANTHROPY LYNNE WINES

“MAYBE SOME BANKS HAVE HAD TO CUT BACK A BIT ON FINANCIAL SUPPORT (FOR NON-PROFITS),” WINES SAID. “BUT I DON’T THINK THERE HAVE BEEN ANY REDUCTIONS IN MAN AND WOMAN HOURS. BANKERS REALIZE HOW MUCH THEIR SUPPORT IS NEEDED.”

local communities” said Coley, whose bank is headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C, “We are allocated funding and we make decisions on spending locally, here and in our other markets,” he said. Support for educational programs is among BB&T’s priorities. “This is an investment to help young people, and it is for the long term,” Coley said. “When people can do better in life, it can help build a better community.” Coley’s civic activities include the Broward Alliance, where he is a member of the board directors. “Our involvement in the community also is a catalyst for branding and for bringing business into the bank,” he said. Education, affordable housing and community development are primary areas for Wells Fargo

WESTON JEWELERS… OFFICIAL JEWELERS TO THE FLORIDA PANTHERS… BY KEVIN LANE

Over the past decade, Weston Jewelers at 1728 Main Street in Weston has gained the enviable reputation of being one of South Florida’s premier purveyors of fine jewelry and timepieces. Their new relationship with the Florida Panther’s Foundation and the Bank Atlantic Center has already paid some big dividends. “We are absolutely thrilled and honored that a firstclass local company such as Weston Jewelers has chosen to join the Sunrise Sports & Entertainment (SSE) family as a marketing partner,” said SSE president & COO Michael Yormark. “I am looking forward to helping raise their brand awareness to BankAtlantic Center patrons, particularly through a number of unique programs that specifically reach their target audience.” Shortly after Weston Jewelry and SSE joined forces, Weston Jewelry became a sponsor of the Ice & Dice Casino Event, which benefited The Florida Panthers Foundation. Held at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale, the casino-style event featured every Florida Panthers player, coach and staff member acting as the dealers for the night. As a sponsor of the evening Weston Jewelers donated a diamond for the Champagne Raffle. More charity events are on the horizon. Another marketing partnership is “Diamonds Are Forever” Register-To-Win Campaign, and BankAtlantic Center Suite 242 Jewelry Extravaganzas, in which custom, high-end jewelry displays were erected in the arena’s owners’ suite during select ice hockey games. “Our selection of fine jewelry is able to please everyone from collectors of rare gemstones to those buying their first engagement ring. Our sales specialists’ are able assist you in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian and French,” said Tracey Dikes, who with her husband Edward Dikes own Weston Jewelers. “Harpers Bazaar named us one of the “Best Jewelry and Watch Retailers in America,” Edward added proudly. “We have always been committed to supporting both local and national charities and have created numerous “Charity Key” events, which benefit these organizations. It’s our way of giving back to the community and helping those in need,” Edward noted. Some of those non-profits include Make a Wish Foundation, Kids In Distress, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and The Center for Missing and Exploited Children. “Celebrating their ten year anniversary, Weston Jewelers carries some of the worlds most renowned names in jewelry and timepieces,” says Paul Slutsky VP of Marketing. BIZ BRAD PRESSENTIN BRAD PRESSENTIN

BRAD PRESSENTIN IS A TEAM PLAYER – BOTH ON AND OFF THE COURT. So it’s no surprise that March is a busy time for the Parkland resident. Not only is college basketball at its peak of excitement with March Madness, but Hard Rock Vodka is expanding into 13 additional markets. Pressentin accepted the role as the National Sales Director for Hard Rock Vodka and Silver Dagger Vodka in 2009. Both vodkas are owned by Ultimate/ Altitude Beverages and Pressentin’s role is to make both vodkas household names. Silver Dagger is served from a striking, sleek bottle decorated with a raised silver dagger. Keeping with the time-honored symbol of the silver dagger as a badge of honor, Silver Dagger Vodka is designed to reflect and enhance the appreciation for fine spirits. Hard Rock Vodka was introduced in Florida in fall 2011 with a star-studded grand launch event. It has since made a splash in retail locations, hotels, bars and restaurants throughout Florida, and Pressentin will now oversee the brand’s expansion throughout the United States, including California, Nevada, Arizona, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware,

74

West Virginia and Tennessee. “You have to know and believe in what you are doing,” said Pressentin. “Hard Rock Vodka is a premium, world class vodka imported from England, distilled from the highest quality grain and filtered six times for exceptional smoothness and taste. Similarly, Silver Dagger is distilled through a Terrepure patented process. This combination of filtration and oxidation reveals a smoother, more refined spirit.” Pressentin’s knowledge and passion for what he does extends into his role as an NCAA referee. He’s been a basketball fan for as long as he can remember - playing on various recreational, high school and college sports teams for several years. When he realized he was not able to play as much anymore, he knew he had to find another way to stay connected. He began officiating in 1979 for public and private high school state tournaments in Wisconsin, where he attended college. During his time in Wisconsin, he officiated for more than 20 high school competitions, including championship games. In 1986, Pressentin officiated Division II and III college basketball games in the Midwest, and he has since been a referee

in more than 12 league championship games. Pressentin currently works Division I, II and III including the Big Ten Conference, Horizon League, Sunshine State League and other various leagues in and around the county. “I definitely have to train year-round just to make sure I’m in the best physical shape I can be,” he says. “I have to keep up with some of the best collegiate players in the country.” With more than three decades of experience and more than 2,000 games called, Pressentin has a lot of great experiences to look back on. From officiating the Division III Final Four in 1999 and 2005 to being on the court during the Division II Elite 8 in 2002. But his favorite experience to date? His first Big Ten game. “It was at Wisconsin,” he said. “I was going to the game as a fan when I got a call from the head of officials who told me that one of the officials was having travel issues and wouldn’t be there to start the game. I worked the first half and did a great job. That led me to being hired as a full-time staff member.”

ROTARY GUEST WESTON ROTARY - 360 COLUMN BY CHUCK YEH, PRESIDENT OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF WESTON

ONE OF THE MAJOR BENEFICIARIES OF OUR FUNDRAISING IS THE ROTARY FOUNDATION. THE ROTARY FOUNDATION MAY NOT MEAN MUCH TO YOU, BUT LET ME TELL YOU A STORY OF HOW THIS CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION ACTUALLY WORKS AND HOW IT ACTUALLY SAVES LIVES! Two years ago Kim Castellano Nielsen, a member of the Rotary Club of Weston, brought our attention to a project spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Sandton, a wealthy white neighborhood in Johannesburg, South Africa. They were trying to equip a medical clinic in a local township. Our club responded to this call for help in what is known as a Matching Grant Program involving 3 Rotary Clubs from 3 countries. Under apartheid, black people were required to live in “townships” which is a piece of dirt with no running water, electricity or sewage. People build shacks with whatever materials they can get heir hands on. One of these “shanty towns” is Itsoteng Township, population 15,000. During one of the charitable projects with his Rotary club, Hans Ludolph discovered that black infants

78

MARCH 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

and children were dying from a lack of medical care. South Africa provides healthcare for free but you have to get to one of their clinics. The problem was no public transportation. Han’s search for a solution came one day when he saw a shipping container in a field that had been there for over a year. He approached the owner and asked him to donate it. The container was then turned into a clinic with windows, doors, electric air conditioner, and water (from a tank raised by another Rotary project). In all, there are now a series of 12 containers arranged like a circle of wagons providing not only treatment for sick children but healthcare to mothers, people with HIV (South Africa has the highest rate of HIV in the world) and anybody who walks in. The clinic is open 4 days a week. For the 12 months between February 2010

and 2011, there have been 11,410 visits! And the most amazing statistic is that transmission of HIV from mother to child is now zero. When my wife, Sue and I visited the Itsoseng Medical Clinic in September of 2011, we were in awe of what a difference the vision and mission of one man within Rotary can make to save the lives of so many people in need. The Rotary Club of Weston meets every Thursday morning from 7:30 – 8:30 AM at Weston Hills Country Club for breakfast and a lively program. If you would like more information, please contact me (Dan Young) at 954.336.8400 or chuckyeh@aol.com or any Weston Rotarian. And, for our latest happenings, be sure to check out our club website at www.WestonRotary. org, and the “Rotary Club of Weston” Fan Page on FaceBook

PIP, ROFILL AND M BREAST IMPLANTS:

DR BARRY SCHWARTZ ADVICE

SHOULD THEY BE REPLACED?

DR. BARRY SCHWARTZ

Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

2300 N. Commerce Pkwy. Suite 308 Weston, FL 33326 (954)384-8300 plasticsurgeryweston.com

The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has sent an alert to all of its members in regard to “PIP”, “Rofill”, and “M” implants. PIP implants were manufactured in France and Rofill implants were manufactured in the Netherlands. M implants, were manufactured in both France and Germany. All of these silicone gel implants have been used throughout Europe and South America. It is safe to assume that they have been used in Central America and other countries where there is a high volume of cosmetic breast surgery. One can also assume that they may have been used in the United States, despite the fact that they were never approved for implantation here. The affected implants are PIP , Rofill and M silicone breast implants that have been used since 2001. There is a strong suspicion that these implants manufactured before 2001 may also be affected. It is important to note that these

86

implants were never approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States. Many women, however, have traveled abroad for plastic surgery and are currently living in the US with these implants. The manufacturers of PIP, Rofill and M breast implants used inferior, industrial grade silicone inside the implants they produced and sold. Industrial grade silicone is a gel that is specifically not to be used in medical practice. It is not known what impurities may exist in this silicone and what damaging effects these impurities can cause in the human body. The silicone gel implants that are FDA approved in the United States are made with a cohesive medical grade silicone gel that is far superior and has been tested and proven to be safe for human implantation. In addition, the PIP, Rofill and M implants have a much higher rate g to French of rupture, according % per year reports as high as 11% in comparison to the silicone breast implants approved in the US , which have a rupture rate of approximately 1% per year. The initial recommendation for P, replacement of PIP, Rofill and M implantss h came from the French ss government regardless ure of symptoms of rupture can or leakage. The American etic Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and The

MARCH 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery have recommended that these implants be replaced. Women who have had silicone breast implant surgery in Europe, Central or South America, and feel they may have these implants should consult their medical records, implant ID card, or surgeon’s office to confirm that in fact, they have the affected implants. If so, they should contact a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon for consultation and replacement of these implants as soon as possible. A SK THE EXPERTS:

P REVE NTIVE M E A S U R E S FOR A STRONGER HEART

CLEVELAND ADVICE

Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S., responsible for 1 out of every 2.5 deaths. In many cases, it can be prevented by making lifestyle changes. The following Q & A with Howard Bush, MD, interventional cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida, offers recommendations that can greatly improve your cardiac health. Q: What exercise best improves my heart’s health? A: Aerobic exercise, including brisk walking, jogging, biking, swimming or using a treadmill or Stairmaster is best. Ask a physician’s device before beginning an exercise such as weight lifting. Q: Is a high heart rate dangerous during exercise? A: Generally speaking, a fast heart rate is not dangerous unless you already have heart disease. But watch for signs of trouble including chest discomfort or shortness of breath. If you have a history of heart problems consult a physician before starting an exercise program. Q: Can nutrition and exercise help me avoid heart disease? A: Proper nutrition and low cholesterol levels, along with regular exercise, are central to a healthy heart. Limit fatty or high cholesterol foods and try to get 45 minutes to an hour of aerobic exercise every day. Such simple steps can often help prevent heart disease or halt its progression. Q: If heart disease runs in my family, what screening should I have? A: Blood pressure measurement and a fasting lipid profile are simple and helpful. Blood sugar

screenings for diabetes are also useful and especially important for overweight individuals. Q: Why should I choose Cleveland Clinic for my heart care? of the skin where fat resides. This “controlled focused energy” spurs the contraction of these deep tissues for an overall smoothing effect. The heat energy also stimulates the production of new collagen over time, resulting in firmer, tighter, smoother skin. The practitioner adjusts the strength of the delivered energy based on feedback from the patient throughout the session. The Pellevé system requires no anesthesia and treatment can be conducted in as little as 15 minutes per area. We simply, apply a thin layer of gel to your face prior to treatment. Most patients experience only a warming sensation on the skin when the Pellevé hand piece is applied. Patients often report that immediately after treatment skin feels tighter similar to Botox. When it takes effect, most patients often experience immediate results, and a reduction in the visibility of wrinkles at the treatment sites. Over the course of the next six months, you will continue to see smoother, more beautiful skin. While many patients see results after just one session of Pellevé, we may recommend multiple treatments to help you achieve your optimal aesthetic goals. The total number of treatments can vary and is based on your individual skin needs. It takes up to two months for the full effects of Pellevé to be seen. There is no downtime or side effects except the ocassional very mild swelling or redness which normally resides in an hour. A PICK THAT FITS: SELECTING THE RIGHT MARKETING FIRM How a Fortune 500 corporation selects a marketing agency should be little different from how it’s done by a large law practice, an accounting firm, a hospital or medical office. The process needs to be thorough and detailed. A team of executives draft a Request For Proposal (RFP) or a list of requirements, then pore over the responses. The executives interviews candidates, review past work and call references. Eventually, executives hire the best candidate and hope for success. One element often overlooked is culture. It can be a key differencemaker in how a relationship bodes for the long term. This is especially true for professional service providers, like law, accounting or medical practices or an organization like a hospital or multi-store retailer. When these companies hire vendors or contractors, how the two get along is essential to long-term success. Whether they’ll get along often can be determined in the review process. The hiring of a marketing partner ought to be lengthy – even arduous. It should include a complete review of respondents, their qualifications, past successes and – of course – chemistry. What must executives look for in a prospective marketing partner? CULTURE. “Partners” is the key word here. You don’t want a marketing vendor. You want a partner - one whose senior executives are responsive to -- or, better yet, anticipate -- your needs. What’s the work culture of the firm? This isn’t only suit-and-tie versus jeans-and-Polo. Attire isn’t as important as perspective. Do you see eye to eye on approach? Would you be confident with the firm or its

people representing you in public? RELEVANT EXPERIENCE. A marketing firm might claim experience in a broad swath of communications fields and industries. All you need to be worried about is what they know about your industry, your media and generating results related to your business. Do they know where your industry is going -- so they can help your company and its executives become industry pioneers and thought leaders? SOCIAL MEDIA. You expect your marketing communications firm to know advertising, public relations, special event production and promotions. But today, no campaign is complete without a social media component. Whether that’s Website development, blogging, social media like a Facebook fan page or a Twitter, your prospective marketing communications partner must be both versed in social media - and knowledgeable about how similar companies in your industry deploy it. EXAMPLES. If it’s an ad agency, ask to see print, online or television ads they’ve done. If it’s a public relations firm, ask to see the portfolio of clips and links garnered for various clients similar to your own. Also, ask for measurable metrics on their campaigns’ performance. ce. Executives may tell you what you want to hear. Nothing beats seeing examples and results for yourself. REFERENCES. Ask for at least three to five e references from clients in n businesses not too dissimilar ar from your own. Then, call those se references. Ask for the agency’s y’s strengths and weaknesses or shortcomings. If the reference has

nothing but kudos and accolades for the firm, you should be left wondering if you’re getting an honest assessment. Hiring the right marketing communications firm is a multiphase process. dermatologist. I’m not a candidate for steroid injections so I left with Viviscal vitamins and shampoo, prescriptions for spironolactone, Propecia, and Rogaine, but still, no hair.” “Hmmm …” As Marisa was speaking, I was simultaneously reviewing her old records. “I don’t see where they ever checked you for estrogen dominance, thyroid antibodies, insulin resistance, or adrenal fatigue [4].” “That’s why I’m here. You’re known all over the Internet as someone that looks at everything.” “My practice is named ‘Holistic Family Medicine’ because I take a holistic approach. After our 80-minute consultation today, I’ll check for things that weren’t looked at yet to find the cause(s) of your hair loss. Then, we’ll put together a comprehensive plan of behavior changes, diet, exercise, vitamins, OTC meds, and even prescriptions, as necessary.” Marisa came back ten days later to go over her labs. “I have bad news and good news. It’s not just one thing; you have twelve different findings that are abnormal. I break them down into ‘things you’re missing that you need to get’, ‘things you got that you need to get rid of’, and ‘hormone balancing’ [5].” “What’s the good news?” “They’re all treatable! Instead of using the same cookie-cutter approach to everybody, I can tailor my therapies directly for the specific problems you have.” “Like what?” “You might not be anemic, but

you’re really low in iron [6].” “I can’t take iron pills. I’m nauseated already.” “That’s okay; we can give iron to you by injection here in the office. Quite a few of my patients periodically tank up their body’s iron stores that way.” “What else did you find? “When I see a slightly low WBC (white cell) count; that’s a sign of excessive stress [7]. Your coffee isn’t the culprit, but it’s your half-fast way of self-medicating this problem. Herbs and other supplements that support your adrenals are a better answer.” “And you said something about hormones?” “Thyroid hormones (not just T4 but also T3), are necessary to keep your hair in anagen, or the ‘growing phase’, as well as to keep its coloring [8]. Without thyroid your hair loses its luster and becomes dull, dry, and grey. Your TSH might be normal, but you tested positive for Reverse T3 and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, both of which cause thyroid hormone resistance [9].” Over the next 40 minutes, I went over the rest of Marisa’s labs and the game plan to regrow her hair and rejuvenate her body. “You’ll first notice less shedding, but since hair grows only at a rate of one-half inch per month, it might take a year and a half to regain the length you used to have [10].” Six months later, Marisa gave me an update. “Dr. Woliner, my hairdresser thinks St. Agnes answered my prayers, but between you and me, I think you had something to do with it too.”

“PEOPLE JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND.” Marisa definitely had hair, but that didn’t stop her from being devastated. “I’m afraid to wash my hair. I’m shedding worse than a German Shepherd in spring [1].” After a good five minutes of venting, I started asking some questions. “Anything else?” “Besides my pony tail not being as thick as it used to be? I’m so worried I won’t have any hair left that my stomach is tied up in knots. I wear St. Agnes of Rome around my neck hoping my prayers will be heard soon [2]. Until then, I have to take Pepcid with my coffee.” “Other than prayer, have you tried anything else?” “I’ve seen every type of doctor you can imagine. My primary scolded me for doing the hCG diet and made me start eating again [3]. My GYN said I’m not yet in menopause so she referred me to an Endo. My thyroid tests were ‘in range’ so he sent me to the

KEEPING UP WITH THE

E V O LV I N G W O R L D OF INTERNET MARKETING

HOLISTIC ADVICE

It’s incredible how quickly the landscape of internet marketing changes. With so many factors at play, companies are finding that their visibility online shifts almost daily. New innovations in technology; accessibility to the internet; the emerging world of social networking: these factors all play a role in how we use the internet today. Mastering the art of search engine optimization (SEO) used to be the Holy Grail of internet marketing. It’s still important, but there are so many additional online platforms getting traffic these days; it’s almost impossible to cite any one as being more important than another. For starters, before the dawn of social networking, search was the driving force behind acquiring online business. Organic traffic was one of the best ways around to attract new customers. Search guided the display of Pay-PerClick (PPC) advertising. It was basically the only way for people to navigate the internet. Search is still a key player in attracting new online business, but today’s user has more resources at hand for navigating the web. Social networking has created a more personalized online experience. Instead of Google offering results based on your search criteria, it can show you listings that have been recommended by your friends. The personalized web experience is definitely one of the more exciting online trends from a marketing standpoint. People load their social networking sites with so much personal information, it makes targeting the right audience for your product or service easier than ever. The indexing methods and algorithms utilized by search

engines have made incredible progress; they are able to provide a user with results based on that user’s geographical location, past selections, social networking information, age, marital status and a host of other personal statistics. What made social networking so exciting in the past was a brand’s ability to communicate directly with its customers. As recently as eighteen months ago, activity taking place on Facebook had no bearing on the Search Engine Result. Like Vegas, what happened on Facebook, stayed on Facebook. But as Facebook has grown and extended its reach, it has begun to have an impact outside of itself. Facebook is no longer simply a tool effective in building brand loyalty; it has become a platform for attracting new customers. What we found really interesting about 2011 though, was the almost universal shift to mobile internet usage. The holiday season saw sales of mobile devices skyrocket; while PC sales were stagnant. This evolution has created a huge market for local internet advertising. Users today are looking for products and services when they’re on the go; sites like Google Places allow business owners to create visibility for themselves in their communities. It’s amazing how much revenue can be generated from claiming listings in prominent local directories. No matter how people are using the internet, the opportunities for advertising are everywhere. Whether you are connecting with your fans via social network, catching a potential customer’s eye in a local listing or you’re attracting traffic through search; internet marketing

Many people consider dining out and the food they enjoy during this ritual…an event. Dining at Renzo’s of Parkland is an event; one that you should absolutely attend. Lorenzo “Renzo” Sciortino and his wife Sara have been sharing their passion of both heart healthy and traditional Italian cooking for more than 20 years. They share their love of food at their three locations in Boca Raton and one in Parkland. Being greeted at the entrance by Renzo is a treat. His warm genuine smile and outstretched arm with a firm handshake make you feel immediately comfortable. The intimate atmosphere is cozy and softly lit. You are transformed to a small area in Italy without the need to travel. The piano playing softly in the corner is just enough to relax even the weary after a tough work day. Joe Veno, our server, has dedicated himself to our every dining need. He instantly makes you feel that he’s known you forever. His sharp knowledge of the chef’s menu specialties and the wine offerings that change daily keep you engaged and negotiating what is best to order. There are so many wonderful dishes to experience. The long, hot stuffed finger peppers; the stuffed red bell pepper with sausage and risotto deliver an opening to remember. Sweet and spicy without an overpowering finish. The chef offers two versions of calamari; a traditional style dusted and lightly fried or calamari grilled steak-style sliced and served with arugula, kalamata olives and tomatoes. And, for the serious diner who enjoys bone-in style entrees; the Veal chop with portabella mushrooms or the Tomahawk steak are both mouth-watering experiences. dining approach; the grilled sea bass oregano or the grilled shrimp with eggplant and zucchini are cooked to perfection; tender and originally flavored. The Bolognese with Strigoli pasta served family-style was wonderfully seasoned and light. Life is short and the dessert experience at Renzo’s is unrepentantly rich so don’t think twice. The traditional Italian Cannoli, Tiramisu and Cheesecake are incredible; a dessert lover’s dream. The chef makes a few specialties unique to Renzo’s; the peach and lemon sorbets. They are exceptional. Each sorbet is created inside the fruit and served in a beautiful goblet. Perfect to enjoy at the end of your meal or while sampling a few of the other tempting treats. If you are fortunate to be present at the end of the evening at Renzo’s, you may hear one of the most beautiful voices as the chef heads out of the kitchen. Beyond his ability to create wonderfully tantalizing meals, Chef Giuseppe Carriero may make you tear up listening to his beautiful Italian singing. The passion for life, food, service, family and friends is translated through your entire experience at Renzo’s. For more information, visit www.RenzosOfBoca.com.

Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale; (954) 565·9681. CASA D’ANGELO RISTORANTE Chef-owner Angelo Elia shines in his namesake eatery. Fare is fancier here, sparkling with imported products and served with greater formality, as befits the homemade pastas that practically float out of the kitchen. Highlights include branzino, the veal chop and anything garnished with olives. Desserts are standard but no less superior because of it. Extensive, if expensive, wine list. Dinner only. 1201 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, (954) 564-1234, www.casa-d-angelo.com. CHIMA STEAKHOUSE God bless the hungry diner who’s got a Brazilian steakhouse in his own neighborhood. With a salad bar that defies the meaning of extensive, including prosciutto and hearts of palm, and a steady parade of more than a dozen varieties of succulent skewered meats that vie for favoritism, places like Chima are a natural choice to impress colleagues and loved ones. 2400 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, (954) 712·0580, www.chima.cc. GRILLE 66 A suave dining room with a great view overlooking the marina, the Grille is a winner from decor to dessert. South Florida-

inspired seafood preparations, steak house-worthy chops and ďŹ lets and a lengthy list of daily specials are reasons to return again and again. As is the busy bar, not so much a pick-up joint as it is a great place to gather with old friends or meet someone new. Dinner only. Hyatt Regency Pier SixtySix, 2301 S.E. 17th St., Fort Lauderdale, FL (954) 728-3500. H2O CAFE A beach side art deco cafe historically renovated originally built in 1937 as the Lauderdale beach hotel. Lustuous, breezy, romantic atmosphere with breath taking view of the Atlantic Ocean - accompanied by an Italian inuenced cross cultural cuisine. There are 85 items on our menu to choose from appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, pastas, chicken, ďŹ sh, steak. 101 South Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33316, www.h2ocafe. net, (954) 414-1024 JOHNNY V Chef-proprietor Johnny Vinczencz brings his quintessential style and inimitable verve to Las Olas with this in-demand New American effort. Tropical, Southwestern and South American inuences vie for attention in quirky dishes that take full advantage of regional seasons and locally produced artisan goods. Johnny V even makes his own queso fresco at the restaurant, where he also serves a wide variety of global cheese offerings alongside longtime pastry chef Maika Espinel’s signature sweets. A 600-label wine list is yet another temptation. Lunch and dinner. 625 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, (954) 761-7920, www. johnnyvlasolas.com. TARANTELLA Tarantella is located in the beautiful community of Weston, located in the Weston Town Center. AND

another thing... THE AMERICAN MARKET JUST CHANGED FOREVER...NO ONE NOTICED. BY BRUCE TURKEL

This year a startling shift is occurring that will change the demographics of the world’s most important market forever. 2012 is the first year in history that non-Hispanic white births in the United States will no longer be the majority. According to The New York Times, “in the latest sign of the nation’s shifting racial and ethnic composition, births to Asian, black and Hispanic women in the United States are on the verge of surpassing births to non-Hispanic whites.” Please don’t kick yourself for not noticing. How many people caught up in the wave of history actually see what’s going on while it’s happening? As Marshall McLuhan wrote, “We don’t know who discovered water, but we know it wasn’t the fish.” You see, there’s a reason why hindsight is 20/20. There’s a reason why the words should’ve, would’ve and could’ve are usually accompanied by a Three Stooges’ slap to the forehead. And there’s a reason why you should pay attention to this new American reality. It’s no longer enough to look at things the way they were and wonder why. Instead, look at things the way they’re going to be and wonder where? As in, where is the opportunity? After all, if minorities accounted for 48% of all births in the US in the 12 months that ended in July 2008, then business as usual is no longer business as usual anymore. And if you haven’t changed to embrace these new consumers then, pardon me for saying it, but you’re talking to ghosts. Specifically, the ghosts of markets past. By the way, before you think this is only a domestic phenomenon, major demographic changes are not just occurring within The United States of America but in all of the Americas. In direct contrast to what is going on in much of the rest of the world, Latin America’s economy is soaring. Mexico and the 19 countries of Central and South America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean (not including Cuba) are seeing year over year economic growth. And for the first time in history, this hemispheric growth is not simply due to the exploitation of natural resources but directly related to the ascension of the middle class. In fact, this demographics’ purchasing power is surpassing that of the upper classes for the first time ever. What is required today is bold new creativity and leadership

based on the realities of the hemisphere the way it’s going to be, not the way it was, and certainly not the way old school marketers would like it to be. What is called for in these exciting yet uncertain times is a new outlook that takes into account the way these emerging consumers pay attention, consume information, make purchase decisions, and ultimately, buy. It’s not like the clues are always easy to decipher. Way back in 2007, the research firm Information Resources found that salsa outsold ketchup in the United States by $163.4 million. Yet the very same year another market researcher, NPD Group, reported that 48% of households used ketchup in a typical two-week period, three times the number that used salsa. And The Wall Street Journal reported that condiment giant Heinz declined to take a public position, saying instead, “We believe there is room for both in the refrigerator and that consumers don’t view the two products interchangeably.” Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m not suggesting that simply because these new consumers represent a formerly minority demographic that minority marketing techniques are the right tools to reach them. What I’m suggesting (perhaps “suggesting” is too subtle, perhaps screaming from the mountaintops is a better description of what I’m trying to do here) is that — from advertising to politics, retail to housing — a new understanding of the new majority is essential. Because, if I haven’t made it clear enough so far, these new consumers ARE the majority. Understanding and embracing these new consumers’ use of technology, language, cultural cues, and financial tools — both online and off — will ultimately determine who will prevail and who will be sitting by the wayside, wondering what the hell just happened.
