VEST PROVES A HIT

Towards the end of his stellar 364-game career with the Western Bulldogs, Brad Johnson wore a rib guard when he played, having sustained a rib injury during a game. He had peace of mind and an extra level of protection and comfort.

As interest and participation in women’s football exploded several years ago, Johnson’s wife Donna was concerned for the number of adolescent girls and women playing with no form of chest or rib protection and they came to the realisation there was a need for a high-performance protective vest designed for women playing contact sport.

That was the genesis for the Zena Performance Vest, which after three years of research and trials in conjunction with Deakin University, was introduced to AFLW last year and by the end of the abridged season, more than 40 players were wearing it.

Weighing just 160 grams and made from injected molding, the women wear it over their crop tops or sports bras and beneath their playing jerseys.

Research indicates that the vest absorbs up to 80 per cent of impact.

“It can handle all sorts of impact,” Johnson said. “It really sits well on the body, it’s nice and light and it doesn’t restrict movement. The girls are recovering a lot better when they wear it.”

According to Johnson, the garment has been really popular at junior level.

Many women wearing the vest have personal stories relating to breast injury or concerns around playing high-impact sport with breast implants.

Some are returning to sport while breast feeding or might have had a mastectomy or reconstructive surgery.

It has been a satisfying project for Johnson, but he said Donna deserves all the praise.

“This just normalises the conversation around the prevention and treatment of injuries in women’s football,” he said.

“Donna was such a great support for me when I played and now it’s time for me to support her as much as I can.”
