DEAR readers “If it’s half as good as the half we’ve known, here’s Hail! To the rest of the road.” Our gratitude to Mr. Sheldon Vanauken, who wrote such strong and provocative speech in a A Severe Mercy. Challenge, joy, sacrifice, fear, obstacle, development. A few words to describe the 2.5 year journey we’ve set our hearts upon, back in the semi-refurbished basement, beneath the pipe-covered fluorescent ceiling. We knew a glamorous road it would not be, but a road worth traveling no less. We decided then, and attest to it today, that if we inspired just one person, we’ve succeeded. Out of pure fascination of the raw talents of our fellow mankind, and the growing desperation of humanity, Lifestyle + Charity Magazine was born. We sought to create a common ground where artistry and benevolence unite. As a result, Lifestyle + Charity Magazine has become all of us. Every page overlaps with our hearts and is marked by our passions, memories, and inspirations. The motivation is an alliance between love, life, thrill, people, and everything in between. To us, to live, IS to love. Thank you to all those who are giving of themselves, and not just waiting for the world to change. Thank you to individuals who breathe creativity, you challenge us to think beyond the tangible. Thank you to our contributors, who graciously represent L+C Magazine. Thank you to our supporters and believers, it is with your affirmations we feel strong. Thank you to our family, you are our first inspiration. Thank you God, you are our first love, and through Your grace so amazing, all of this is made possible. Certainly, it is all of you who give life to our mission. Our hearts are indubitably yours. GUY justin choi How do you live inspired? By keeping an open mind about everything. Eventually, I would like to open up my own cocktail bar. A service bar where people come to forget about the outside world and can be any person they want to be. It will take a lot of work, but if I can save enough money I would like to start with a pop-up bar. The one thing I’ve learned as an adult, is, it never ends. “It” being the most general sense of the word. So, live life to the fullest. L+C is inspiring because everyone has something they care about, and L+C helps people realize that they can support a charity, and have fun at the same time.

GAL ashly priest

How do you live inspired? I live inspired by being actively involved in my community. Taking a part in social change doesn’t have to be this huge global movement, it can start on your doorstep. Support local businesses, become involved in local charities and make a point not to waste your days. Dream? Ultimately, I would like to work for a high-end European lingerie brand, or start my own. All the best lingerie is in Europe! I hope to move there in the next few years. Important lessons learned? The main thing I learned in NYC is to keep trying, the worse thing you could hear is “No,” but you won’t find that out if you never tried in the first place.

“What I love most about L+C is what I like to call “peer inspiration.” Seeing people just like me, my age and in my city making a difference in whatever capacity they can.”

a gentlemen’s pep talk

new business card has entered the dating scene, and it has become an instant hit! Resonating from radio airwaves to pieces of paper, the chorus from

Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe has become a pickup line on distributable business cards: “Hey, I just met you, And this is crazy, But here’s my number, So call me maybe.” At first glance, this might seem harmless coming from a guy you just met. However, this “harmless” business card is solidifying the softer man within our society. Now, guys can hand out a simple card without thinking twice about it - no follow-up. He can simply just expect a call and leave it to the women he gave the cards to.... maybe. This new approach might sound ideal to you guys, but let me have you know - if it does, then you are not a real man. Real men take the risk without fear of rejection to get to know that special someone better. Real men ask for phone numbers, so they can take the initiative, setup a date, and lead the potential beginnings of a new relationship. Real men decide that they would not want to miss out on an opportunity to get to know their potential wife better through a follow-up date. [by Jon Lechliter, Contributor]

a lady’s pep talk

E

veryone has expectations when dating, engaged, and even married. These expectations can be formed through past relationships, movies, or other relationships seen around you. Expectations can make or break any relationship, so here is an easy way to properly manage a very tricky relationship characteristic. Communication. It is actually that simple. Too often, girls want guys to just know what they want, but the truth is - it is 10x easier if you just tell us what is on your mind. When guys do not live up to your expectations, most of the time it is not on purpose, but it is because we simply do not know what you expect. Have that conversation of what you expect, but be prepared to listen to his expectations too. Be careful of forming relationship expectations from movies, music, or television because you will always be disappointed. Don’t get me wrong - you should be treated well, but “Hollywood” relationships are not normal and rarely exist in real life situations. Set real expectations from real life scenarios, and communicate these often to ensure a functional, growing, and consistent relationship that you will love. [by Jon Lechliter, Contributor]

MINIMALIST A minimalist sees in shades, says a lot with very little, and walks to the tune of her own heart. Patterns, stripes, and boisterous colors are not necessary. Grace and simplicity with a touch of mystery are her companions of choice, as well as an accompaniment by a single accessory. One may remark that minimalist fashion is the true test of style and individuality. Freedom to walk the streets alone, window shop at Tiffany’s and Bergdorf on 5th Avenue, enjoy a sweet stop at Bel Ami, or soak in some of the greatest New York City views one could experience - that’s right, the top of the Empire State Building. Who’s up for the minimalist challenge? [by Elena Baxter, Lifestyle Editor]

This leaves you the grass in Central Park and water splashes from Bethesda Fountain - unless, you’ve got access to the city’s rooftop pools or know about the free ones. For a bit of Andy Warhol fascination, lounge out poolside at the Thompson LES hotel. For those who see the the skyline as nature, lather up your sunblock, go for vivid-colored painted nails, and your best pair of squareframed sunglasses to fit right in at Hotel Gansevoort’s colored lighted rooftop pool. Looking for the ultimate cool? Then swim in the Floating Pool Lady on top of a barge located in the Bronx and make this your infinity pool destination. WHERE THERE’S NIGHTLIFE, THERE’S INTRIGUE | SMOKEY EYES Your Saturday night begins at dusk. You get the phone call - what are you wearing tonight? I was thinking an intense red bandage dress or maybe a bubblegum colored racer-back cami with white-distressed skinny jeans. Oh, and definitely heels. Do you want to go to Soho or the Meatpacking District? Hmm.. let’s head to STK around 9PM, and keep it chill at The Haberdasher with their crafted cocktails. Oh, let’s call...Whatever you are stepping out in and wherever you are landing, pair it with Summer nightlifes’ hottest trend: navy inspired smokey eyes. Tip by: Guest Contributor, Stefanie Savino, Founder of Bella Rococo A navy inspired smokey eye will revamp your night look and replace your traditional smokey eye look. Go for richer, dark navy tones to make this look really pop. You can achieve this in a variety of ways: a quick and easy way is to apply an eye pencil all around your eye, making the line on your lid a little thicker. Take some navy eyeshadow and an eye brush or Q-Tip and begin to smudge the pencil and shadow to get a smokey look. The best part of this look is that it is not supposed to look perfect, but blend until you get the desired level of smokiness. Top it off with a nude lipstick.

THE INTERVIEW “I WANTED TO PROVE THAT FASHION DOES HAVE A HEART”

RACHAEL: Sam, from your journey, please tell us about some of your most inspirational moments. SAM: I traveled to DC in 2009 with Stevie Wonder for the Presidential Inauguration, which included five days of performances and interviews. Meeting the President and the First Lady in a private tent on a lawn, an hour after Stevie performed for them, was magical and humbling. There is another story, which is the first time I am speaking about this. I survived a car accident when I was a teenager. I recall a white light coming over me as I lost control over the car. I swerved to avoid a stalled car on the freeway going 55 mph. The car I was in was totalled; a completely crumbled unrecognizable pile of heap afterwards. I walked away without a single scratch. The ambulance operators were in complete shock; baffled after examining me on the spot; not a single bruise. I think that was my first experience with angels and questioning spirituality.

time when I am home and consider myself a nester. RACHAEL: Tell our readers about The Giving Closet and what inspired you to create this program? SAM: The Giving Closet has changed my life and what I want to do with my time on this planet. I wanted to prove that fashion does have a heart. My twelve and a half years in the Los Angeles market was very cut-throat and sometimes soul-less. I wanted to do more than just run around for “last minute” productions and actor’s needs. I looked at all of my amazing fashion and PR contacts and thought to myself - I can do more. So, I did.

RACHAEL: Sam, What does one day in the life of Sam Russell look like?

I now surprise women in need with $10,000 in work and personal attire. I hear amazing stories of women through social workers and various non-profits and approach the media and say - can you take a break from covering the Kardashians and cover this moment of surprise? We are talking about imaging someone and changing their life forever.

SAM: Lots of travel - planes, trains and automobiles. I commute to Los Angeles for work, I take meetings in NY for The Giving Closet, and I live with my partner outside of DC. I walk in the country for an hour each day, 5 days a week; it keeps me sane. I cherish my

JOHN WOOD When the words “we are too poor to afford education” were said to John Wood, he did not turn the other way leaving his shadow. It was his defining moment when he made a choice to transform the lives of millions of children in the developing world through a focus on literacy and gender equality in education. Considering we live in the age of word, communication, and access, he went on to change the

story of hopelessness into a story of hope. This vision of seeing a world in which people are able to realize their full potential is tucked way back into the deep of his soul and pouring out through the nonprofit, Room to Read. He gave his heart and the orchestra of giving followed. Hello, reality check. Over 60 million primary school-aged children around the world do not have access to education and most likely will never learn to read or write. Room to Read believes that all children, regardless of gender or background, have a right to education. Today, Room to Read supports over 15,000 girls’ education scholars, has established over 13,000 libraries, 1,550 schools and distributed over 11 million books.

t all began in 1998, when Microsoft executive, John Wood, trekked through Nepal and was invited to visit a school with over 450 students. When the headmaster showed John the library, John was shocked to find an unfurnished room without books. When John asked the headmaster why the library was devoid of books, he said: “In Nepal, we are too poor to afford education, but until we have education, we will always be poor.” The headmaster then spoke fateful words: “Perhaps, sir, you will someday come back with books.” At that moment, John vowed to help and the seeds were planted for Room to Read. Supported by co-founders, Erin Ganju (now CEO of Room to Read) and Dinesh Shrestha, John has been instrumental in successfully scaling the organization by creating one of the fastest-growing nonprofits in history. My dream is that every child, everywhere in the world has access to literacy and books in their mother tongue from a young age—bar none.” (Viking Penguin) will be published in January 2013. ABOUT ROOM TO READ Room to Read is a global organization seeking to transform the lives of millions of children in the developing world through a focus on literacy and gender equality in education. Founded on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children, Room to Read works in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and to ensure girls have the skills and support needed to complete their secondary education. Since 2000, Room to Read has impacted the lives of more than six million children by providing increased access to high-quality educational opportunities in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam and Zambia. Room to Read supports over 15,000 girls’ education scholars, has established over 13,000 libraries, 1,550 schools and distributed over 11 million books. Room to Read aims to reach 10 million children by 2015.

THE LITERACY PROGRAM establishes libraries, constructs school rooms, increases access to age-appropriate and culturallyrelevant reading materials by publishing their own original children’s books, providing reading and writing instruction materials and training for teachers, and improving the child friendliness of the school environment. THE GIRLS’ EDUCATION PROGRAM focuses on girls transitioning to secondary school because that is where the biggest (and most permanent) gaps in gender equality in education take place. They support girls to attend school, provide female mentoring, conduct workshops to help girls negotiate key life decisions, and create more girl-friendly school environments.

bombshells IN TRAINING Saturday nights just got HOTTER. “Joey’s Saturday Night Dance Party” at Barry’s Bootcamp sounds like a night in the Meatpacking District upon first glance: There is a live DJ, lots of fit bodies in tight clothes, strobe lights, a disco ball, and even shots! Unlike a typical night on the town, spending the evening at Barry’s will not leave you with a headache or that state of weakness only too many Patron shots can bring on. The complete opposite will happen, in fact. Make a habit of taking this class every weekend, and your body will feel strong (not to mention look incredible). You’ll be able to function in the morning… just in time for that brunch mimosa you will have most definitely earned, if you make it through the 60 minute regimented bootcamp at the Chelsea fitness haven. The Saturday night class begins at 7 o’clock sharp. You can arrive dressed in regular gym clothes and accessorize with one of the complimentary glow-in-the-dark bracelets Barry’s hands out, or try

on those neon American Apparel leggings you’ve been wanting to show off! Trust us, anything goes. Get ready because for the next hour, the music is cranked up, the lights are dimmed down, and it is GO time! The instructor-led class is split into short segments of treadmill work followed by strength conditioning on the floor with light weights. Midclass, just when you begin to secondguess your ability to make it to the end, a second Bootcamp instructor arrives with reprieves in the form of a refreshing antioxidant smoothie shot and you’ll find yourself recharged for the last 30 minutes. The intensity in this class and the calibre of expertise the Barry’s Bootcamp instructors have is unmatched – They ask a lot of you, but their enthusiasm is contagious. You’ll wander out of the studio wondering what sort of workout animal took over your body… but so glad it did. BARRY’S BOOTCAMP GIVES BACK Barry’s Bootcamp may be tough, but they certainly have a soft spot for charity as well. I spoke to Joey Gonzalez, COO of Barry’s

Bootcamp and Co-owner of the NYC and Hamptons locations about their commitment to giving back. “At Barry’s Bootcamp, we love hosting charitable events. In September, I worked with an organization particularly close to my heart, Susan G Komen For the Cure. The event was in loving memory of two of my student’s family members who had lost their lives. We also celebrated survivors, including the Guest of Honor, my mother.” If you’re looking to indulge in a unique fitness experience and want to know that the people whipping you into shape, make it a point to give back charity, throw on as much fluorescent as possible and march on over to Barry’s Bootcamp! www.barrysbootcamp.com

cycle house WEST HOLLYWOOD Switching gears from Gotham City to the City of Angels, Lifestyle + Charity invites you to learn about Cycle House, a West Hollywood cycling sanctuary frequented by the likes of Nicole Kidman, Sophia Bush, Gerard Butler, Jessica Lowndes, Jamie Chung, and Meagan Good, just to name a few If you like to push the limits in everything you do, especially when it comes to fitness, then you MUST give Cycle House a try. Here, instructors push riders harder than ever to help them reach their goals and they make no apologies for it! Their most infamous class is called the “1000 Calorie Ride” in which the instructor wears a body bug to measure calorie count, and the class doesn’t stop until she hits 1000. During the class, instructors adhere to a high-impact regimen that incorporates weights and stretching that can burn between 400-600 calories a ride. Rides at Cycle House are always focused on rhythm riding, letting the beat serve as the guide for the intensity and tempo of the ride. Conventional spinning and indoor cycling classes focus on a crescendo of difficulty, working your way up to a peak and then cruising down to cool your body. Cycle House is unique because it focuses on interval training; instructors use the term, “flipping the coin,” whereby they constantly switch riders back and forth between heart pumping sprints and jump sequences to recovery periods with a slower tempo. This teaching style constantly challenges the body, while maximizing caloric burn. The usual 45 minute class typically stretches into

68 \ LIFESTYLE + CHARITY MAGAZINE | LIVE INSPIRED

60 minutes launching riders into pure bike bliss. Cycle House opened in October of 2011 and has already built a devoted hip crowd of people seeking to push their own boundaries and not just when it comes to burning calories. Owner, Lara Gillman dreamt of a studio that excelled in guest service, gave back to the community, and all the while offered an incredible cardiovascular and strength training workout. At Cycle House, charity has always been a part of the business structure and begins when class participants reserve a spot in class. For every ride you take, the studio donates two meals to feed the hungry through a partnership with the nonprofit, Feeding America. Clients can track donations on their website, as well as book classes, and reserve a bike. Feeding the hungry isn’t all the Cycle House owners are doing. The Gillmans and their investors are young, ambitious entrepreneurs that embrace the change in business culture to be more responsible of their impact on the world. www.cyclehousela.com

bridal BOOTCAMP As the big day draws closer and the realization that all eyes will be on them in a few short weeks, bridal boot camps are all the rage for those tying the knot this summer. So, what does one entail? We explored Exhale Spa’s offerings, and have all the details just for you! Available in six week or twelve week packages, Exhale Spas across the country offer clients a perfect balance of fitness and beauty regiments leading up to their I do. Once participants have decided on a class package, they are granted unlimited access to Exhale Spa’s legendary Core Fusion classes, as well as their yoga classes. Jittery nerves are banished while toning up and zenning out in these instructorled, results-focused, hour-long classes. After working up a sweat, bachelorettes can unwind and relax in their state-of-the-art spa facilities, as they take in one of the three facials included in both packages (as well as an hour-long massage to work out any knots that may have developed while dealing with all the stresses of wedding planning). For those who opt for the twelve week package, Exhale Spa throws in additional services, such as a consultation with a certified nutritionist and additional skincare services. In the final days leading up to the wedding, who would want to throw away all of the results that took so many hours of crunches and Dancers Poses to attain? Not us! This is why the final component of Bridal Boot Camp packages are so brilliant. Rather than a night of pure debauchery at the club (ok, maybe in addition to that), Exhale Spa includes a complimentary, private Core Fusion or yoga class for you and six or more of your friends plus the bride-to-be receives 30% off all other spa treats ordered, and bridal party guests receive 15% off. It is the perfect opportunity to leave all stress and nit-picky wedding details at the door and simply enjoy this important milestone in your life with the people closest to you. Exhale Spa: Atlanta Manager Anne-Marie Berte has seen her fair share of bridal parties in her location and says, “It’s so lovely working bridal parties! To put together events ranging from bachelorette parties to wedding showers is a lot of fun for us, and we love to serve as a place to celebrate and relax during all of the excitement. We are the perfect location to gather bridal parties because our guests can host their main party in our nail bar area and serve lite bites and champagne while opening presents and catching up in a spa environment.” It should be noted that the bachelorette parties are available without the purchase of a boot camp package, and to ensure a private class, it should be scheduled at least two weeks in advance (as they sell out quickly). EXHALE SPA GIVES BACK Exhale Spa is proudly committed to the communities it calls home and dedicates both time, space, and funds to various non-profit organizations. One such organization is Cool Girls, Inc of Atlanta. Cool Girls’ community partners, mentors, and volunteer networks support girls in all aspects of their development – breaking the cycles of poverty, low self-esteem, and teen pregnancy. Their life skill programs develop girls into confident women through education and exposure to a broader world of opportunity. www.exhalespa.com | Get connected with Anne-Marie via twitter: @am_sunshine [by Laci Texter, Health + Fitness Editor] 69 \ LIFESTYLE + CHARITY MAGAZINE | LIVE INSPIRED

n some cultural traditions, the sign of breaking glass at a wedding represents life’s fragility, and the importance of living every day as if it were the last. In present culture, we carry this tradition into our lives not so much by breaking glass, but by poppin’ bottles. Summer beckons us to make memories. Getting outside of our tiny apartments, and trying new things. Living boldly with color. Socializing into the young hours of the night, or choosing to walk home rather than hail a cab. All of this can be embodied with just the perfect sip of a summer cocktail, and savored with the perfect glass of wine. We bring you the ideal list of organic and colorful cocktails to help you embrace your summer life. Toast to summer, friends, and making every moment a memory.

Fall under the spell of art inspiration and escape into a collage of color and intrigue while cozying up to artists from across the country. When you stroll through our art space, you might say I want that on a shirt? I can wear one to my next neon party or wear it under a blazer with a pair of cocktail shorts styled with a bold cuff - okay, that’s how we would wear it. For the guy, as is. Well, lucky for you (for us), the designs you see can be turned into a fashionable tee! “Show the world you give a shirt.” This is You and Who’s clever line, definitely suitable for a chuckle. You and Who sells oneof-a-kind shirts that help worthy causes across the country. They have teamed up with artists from all over the country by turning their artwork into fashionable t-shirts, and with their one-for-one campaign, their art tees give you the chance to give back as every shirt sold goes to someone in need- like victims of domestic violence, runaway youth, and homeless individuals. As of today, You and Who t-shirt buyers have helped 2, 744 people across 33 states. You and Who has centered on a hyper-local focus as a way to bring communities together through fashion and art. Their artists have a direct impact on helping people in need in their own communities, consumers can help their own cities thrive, and those less fortunate or living on the streets receive a high-quality, brand new, artist-designed shirt for them to wear and feel good about themselves.
