“The children were really keen to get involved in some Love Food Hate Waste events, so we’re arranging cookery sessions to develop their life skills for when they leave foster care.â€? There are up to 270 children in foster care in Barnsley, and the Association consists of 105 Barnsley council foster carers and 65 independent foster carers, who provide the youngsters with a loving and stable home environment. This can be a really scary time for them. “The biggest challenge is learning to fend for themselves, so workshops like this are vital in showing them how to create nutritious meals while making sure they have enough money to pay the bills,â€? he added.

Smells like team spirit As a result of the 2015 PULSE survey, the Derby team wanted to improve communication. HOW WE’RE MAKING EVEN MORE FROM WASTE Our remote HWRCs in the race to turn cast-offs into critical kit When one of our old sites in Wakefield closed its doors for the last time, rather than discard unwanted materials, they put our waste-to-product ethos into action. Our Dumfries and Galloway team landed two of the hand-me-downs, which have been rehomed at Sanquhar and Beattock HWRCs.
– I became the organiser!â€? she added. Colleagues were invited to bring home-made dishes – shop-bought items were strictly off limits – including curries, savoury turnovers and cakes. Our royal seal of approval Few among us can say we have had a visit from the Queen, but our BDR team warmly welcomed her delegated representative to ofďŹ cially open their site. Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe, was joined by council representatives, including Council Leader Sir Stephen Houghton CBE and our Group Chief Executive Peter Dilnot, to mark the launch of
our pioneering waste treatment facility, which is partnered with Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham councils. Mr Coombe, a chartered accountant and lawyer by trade, also served in the Territorial Army and supports many charities based in Yorkshire as a trustee, including St Luke’s Hospice. RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
Dogs’ dinners for Duke and Dawksey key to Crufts glory bid Drop in to Susan Scott’s house and there’s every chance you’ll be overwhelmed by the delicious waft of gourmet food cooking on the hob. It’s highly likely our management DFFRXQWDQW ZLOO EH DGGLQJ WKH ¿QLVKLQJ touches to a hearty meal of minced chicken with salmon oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic and tripe. But before she is compared to our very own version of Nigella, it’s worth pointing out that the delicious grub isn’t for her‌ it’s for her dogs.
That’s because her two Rottweilers, 11-month-old Duke and 22-month-old Dawksey – who weigh in at a combined 90kg – are her ‘little babies’. When she’s not processing journals or acting as an Agresso guru in Cumbria, Susan doesn’t bat an eyelid at travelling the length and breadth of the country to enter them in competitions. “It’s a big commitment but I wouldn’t change it for the world. My husband Adrian and I have spent more than ÂŁ1,000 on operations for Dawksey, who had joint and eye problems when we adopted him five months ago,â€? she said. “We also bought a van, which we’ve kitted out with cages so the dogs can travel in style and comfort when we go to shows.â€? When they are not out on the road, Susan spends hours preparing the gourmet-inspired
food to make sure Duke and Dawksey are well-nourished and looking tip-top for their weekend competitions. PAMPERED “Both dogs eat raw feed,â€? Susan VDLG Âł$ ORW RI GU\ IRRG KDV DUWLÂżFLDO ingredients, so I give them the minced chicken and tripe with salmon oil, apple cider vinegar and garlic. It’s a bit of a concoction really but packed with nutrients.â€?
The pampered pooches can even count water aerobics as one of their weekly pastimes, as doting Susan also takes them to hydrotherapy sessions at a dedicated animal swimming pool to enjoy some low-intensity exercise. “Rottweilers are renowned for developing joint problems in later life, so the hydrotherapy is a great way to keep them in shape while not doing any damage. Dawksey is a natural swimmer, but Duke causes a bit of a splash, she said. Duke has caused a bit of a splash in the dog show arena as well as the pool, sweeping up top prizes at championship shows in Yorkshire, Manchester and Edinburgh, and landing himself a place at the prestigious Crufts dog show later in the year. Susan said: “Getting to Crufts is a fantastic achievement, especially as he hasn’t had much experience. Whatever happens on the day, we’ll be proud of him because it’s the taking part that counts!
HIGH PRAISE FOR HELPFUL ‘HEROES’ BDR colleagues have received thanks after helping on a DIY SOS build to allow disabled Terry Guest to move out of a nursing home and closer to his family. Shanks disposed of the annexe-build waste for free.
DITCH YOUR PREJUDICE We’re all guilty of making assumptions about people, but colleagues were asked to confess all during customer care training at South Kirkby. Project Coordinator Sally Hurn attended the training with 30 site operatives and said: “We learnt to form judgements based on fact over opinion.
