Introduction Welcome to the new look Retailer Matters, full of ideas to help you grow your business and make the most of seasonal demand.

Stuart Johnson Landmark Wholesale Retail Controller

The World Cup may be over but the Summer (and, hopefully, the fantastic weather!) offers a whole range of trading opportunities. With a little careful planning you can really make the most of this time of year. We are now well into the barbecue season, so ensure that you always have stock of charcoal, barbecue lighters and disposable barbecues. Plan to have plenty of stock of barbecue favourites available – burgers, sausages, chicken, burger buns, rolls, etc. No weekend barbecue would be complete without a great selection of chilled beers, ciders and wines – not forgetting soft drinks, ice cream and treats for the children! Other Summer opportunities include chilled foods especially cooked meats, coleslaw and salads. And Summer toys like paddling pools, balls, water guns, cricket and tennis sets can all provide additional Summer sales. In this issue we focus on soft drinks – absolute winners at this time of year especially when they’re chilled. Soft drinks not only sell more and more as the temperature rises, they also attract passing trade and bring new Customers to your Store – even more so if the chiller is visible from the street. See page 9 for more information.

Cider is a great Summer favourite and is a category that is undergoing tremendous growth at the moment – make sure you’ve got good stocks of the best selling brands together with some good Own Brands like Landmark Wholesale’s Eridge Vale and White Storm, recently repackaged to give them extra Consumer appeal. See page 4 for more. Retailers shouldn’t view EPOS as a cost to their business – EPOS provides vital information that can help improve business efficiency and increase sales and profitability. See ‘Spotlight on EPOS systems’ on page 14. And we pose the question ‘Why join a Symbol Group?’ on page 28. The simple answer is that it is the best way to have a chance of competing with the multiples – bigger buying power, regular promotions, a professional image, etc., etc. It all adds up to a better way to trade. Have a great Summer! For more information about Landmark Wholesale and their Members please contact Head Office on: 01908 255300 www.landmarkwholesale.co.uk

Give cider the space it deserves

Cider is one of the fastest growing categories, make sure you are not missing out

Research has found that UK Retailers are currently missing out on a massive sales opportunity and, by taking cider more seriously, they can cash-in on what is now a £688m market.

modern cider brands, Magners, Bulmers and Gaymers can translate into increased profits in Convenience Stores.

An area where Independent Retailers can really outperform the multiples is by offering chilled packs for immediate consumption. Over three quarters of shoppers buy beer and cider from the chillers with 74% of cider drinkers buying for consumption within 4 hours, therefore it is vital that Retailers have a good selection of ciders in the chillers to meet the Customer needs.

Pear cider and cider with fruit are also a great opportunity for sales in Convenience Stores. Three million people currently buy pear ciders, many of whom have previously not purchased any other types of cider.

Modern cider is currently worth nearly a third of all cider sales and more Consumers purchase modern than standard cider. Giving modern cider more space in-Store and stocking the three key

There’s more to cider than just apples…

The cider category continues to deliver a strong performance for Retailers. Cider accounts for 25.1% of total sales in the beer and cider category and is currently growing at 13.5% – as a category, cider is now worth over £688m which is bigger than ale! The premium cider category continues to perform strongly with over 21% growth and worth over £220m at retail.

Retailer Matters | 05

Retailers should look to be stocking up on cider to capitalise on the impulsive nature of the category, especially when the weather hots up. But they need to make sure that they get the offering right and give at least 20% of their long alcoholics drink fixture to cider which will allow them to really maximise sales and profit. Cash-in this Summer! Cider is an impulse purchase, particularly in the Summertime which is epitomised by impromptu gatherings, barbecues and parties. Independent Retailers have a huge opportunity to capitalise on this by getting the basics right – give the sector enough space, make sure availability is good and key lines are stocked in the chiller.

The research serves as a call to action for Retailers outlining four key points: 1 Give cider more space on shelf to reflect the category’s value 2 Chilling is key as the majority of cider is consumed within four hours of purchase 3 Display cider all year round to maximise sales – 63% of people now drink cider all year round 4 Group like products together on shelf e.g. pear cider, fruit cider etc. in order to make the choice as easy as possible for Consumers.

In Cider Information Make the right choice

Some interesting cider facts: • Around 13% of UK adults drink cider at least once a month • In the 14th Century, children were baptised in cider as it was cleaner than the water! • Captain Cook carried cider on his ships to treat his crew for scurvy • At one time, 365 different varieties of cider apples were grown in the UK • In the 19th Century, cider was advertised as a cure for gout and other illnesses • The volume of cider produced annually in the UK is in excess of 6 million hectolitres or 130 million gallons

Strongbow is the UK’s number one cider worth £223m at retail and growing at 13%. With 84% of the everyday cider category and continuing to grow share, Retailers need to make sure they have a good range of Strongbow packs in-Store.

The Bulmers brand is now the biggest selling premium cider with over 24% of the sector and continuing to deliver strong growth – Retailers can capitalise on this success by stocking both Original and Pear varieties. And with 9% of the premium cider category, Jacques Fruits des Bois offers a uniquely female option and a lighter alternative to wine.

• 45% of all the apples grown in the UK are now used here for cider making • Cider is equally enjoyed by men and women, but women drink half the volume of men • One of the earliest written references to cider can be found in the Wycliffe ‘Cider’ Bible, printed in the early 15th Century.

Once Retailers have allocated shelf and chiller space for cider, it is important to get the right mix of packs. Shoppers will be mainly looking for the big brands – Strongbow, Bulmers, Woodpecker, Scrumpy Jack, Jacques Fruits des Bois, Magners, Gaymers, Blackthorn, Olde English, Diamond White, etc. – but Retailers should also stock some good Own Brands like Landmark Wholesale’s Eridge Vale and White Storm ranges offering fantastic value, retailing at prices well below the brands and recently repackaged to give them extra Consumer appeal. Retailers can make great use of PMPs which sell through more quickly than non-PMPs and give real confidence to the shopper knowing that they are getting extra value for money.

The Cider category

• Cider is a key growth category, not just a fad. Give it at least 20% of beer, cider and alcopop space in your store.

• Around two thirds of cider space should be given to everyday and premium ciders. Additional space should be given at peak times/seasons - for example, in summer.

• Allow around a third of cider space for Strongbow, the UK market leader. • Lager drinkers also drink cider so put brands like Strongbow next to it.

Stock up on soft drinks for the Summer and chill, chill, chill!

Chilled soft drinks are essential for a profitable Summer • Soft drinks sales through Independents increased 9.3% in the last year • A 1°C increase in temperature leads to a 3.5% increase in soft drinks sales.

Recent poor Summers together with continuing economic uncertainty causing Consumers to be careful with their money have kept the soft drinks market flat during the last couple of years, but 2010 could well be different. Soft drinks perform better when the sun’s out – just a 1°C increase in temperature leads to a 3.5% increase in soft drinks sales. The warm start to the Summer and the World Cup has got us off to a good start and suggests that 2010 could be a big year for the sector. According to data analysts SalesOut, in the year to April 2010, soft drinks through Independent Stores saw a 9.3% increase in sales and the 2010 Britvic Soft Drinks Report also recorded positive results for the category.

Sales of soft drinks are more than three times the value of total crisps and snacks sales but there is still strong potential for growth. In Great Britain, our per capita soft drinks consumption is currently behind countries like Ireland, Belgium and Norway – Coca-Cola Enterprises believes there could be an additional £1.4bn category growth over the next five years. Give them what they want Consumers are now prepared to shop around for their groceries, changing their buying habits to get the best value. They also make more frequent, smaller purchases of ten items or less. With concerns about the economy, debt and job security, they continue to spend less on new clothes, fuel and going out − and savings by switching to cheaper grocery brands.

‘Eat and Drink now’ is the number one reason for Shoppers to visit; there are more than four billion out-of-home snacking occasions in the UK each year, not including lunches. All this is good news for the Convenience Sector; by tailoring their offering to the requirements of today’s Consumers, Independent Retailers have a fantastic opportunity to cash-in on the multi-billion pound on-the-go market.

• Sales of soft drinks are more than three times the value of total crisps and snacks sales

Providing simple meal deal options – a value-formoney offer linking soft drinks with foods – is key to maximising soft drinks sales. Lunchtime meal deals are particularly important in the Convenience Sector – 78% of people snack during the working day. 86% of Consumers want their soft drinks chilled and most on-the-go Shoppers buy soft drinks to consume immediately or within a couple of hours, therefore it is crucial to keep them cold. If possible, soft drinks chillers should be located near the front of the Store so that they are visible from the street to attract impulse Shoppers. Putting chillers at till points increases soft drinks sales by 14%; making more effective use of POS and maximising promotional activity gives sales a further boost.

• 86% of Consumers want their soft drinks chilled

Like products should be merchandised together in vertical blocks – colas, fruit carbonates, energy, water etc. – and all single-serve soft drinks should be available chilled; 500ml bottles are popular throughout the day for drinking on-the-go or in the car. Own Brand delivers Own Brand soft drinks grew by 31.1% in the last year and now account for 35.8% of soft drinks sales suggesting that Consumers are choosing lower-price goods to save money. Core brands maintain a loyal following but there is a real opportunity for Independent Retailers to stock a good selection of Own Brand alternatives.

• Putting chillers at till points increases soft drinks sales by 14%

Landmark Wholesale’s range of Own Brand soft drinks offers great choice and value for the Consumer and excellent profit margins for Retailers; since its launch in March 2009, Landmark Wholesale’s LSV Sport and Energy Drink Range has been hugely successful.

• Own Brand now accounts for 35.8% of soft drinks sales

The Sport and Energy Drinks market was worth more than £1.3bn in the UK in 2009 according to Datamonitor and has grown by more than 20% over the past five years with similar growth predicted for the next three years. Landmark Wholesale’s sales of Sport and Energy Drinks increased by more than 34% last year compared with soft drinks at 9%.

Sector is massive – only 18% of energy products purchased are Own Brand compared with 35.8% for soft drinks overall. We are investing heavily into Product Development, POS and Marketing to make sure that we double sales of LSV over the next two years.” Britvic’s Soft Drinks Report showed the following trends for the market in 2009.

Spotlight on EPOS systems

EPOS technology can benefit your business All the management information you need to run your business more profitably and efficiently is available at the touch of a button. EPOS can help manage your Supplier relationships. Through accurately monitoring your sales activities and stock movements you can take control of your purchasing by automatically generating orders for the products you really need.

Research has shown that seven out of ten small and medium-sized Retailers can see the benefits of EPOS systems, yet only 40% percent have actually adopted them. An EPOS system, when used correctly is a powerful business tool giving invaluable insight into what sells and what doesn’t and where the profit is made. It gives you the ability to review pricing and evaluate the impact on sales and profit. You get savings through more accurate pricing, identification of shoplifting and more efficient stock control. A new EPOS system can quickly pay for itself, on average an EPOS Store’s gross profit figure is 2 percentage points higher than a non EPOS Store, products are always sold at the correct price and new price increases can be applied immediately. By identifying slow and fast moving items and pricing them accordingly, you can cut the prices of slower-moving items to suit prevailing trading conditions or, if an item is flying off the shelves, adding a few pence to the price may be a shrewd move. The key is to base your decisions on facts rather than guesswork.

When it comes to promotions, EPOS makes life a lot easier. Promotion prices are easily changed in the system, multi-buys are easy to set up and when the promotion is finished prices can quickly be put back to normal. Reports will then enable you to evaluate sales and profit to gauge how successful the promotion has been. You can measure the results of changing opening hours; find out when you are busiest; and even see the impact of moving products around the Store. Monitoring staff performance and honesty can also pay dividends and you can pay less VAT by only paying on what you sell. Another big benefit of EPOS systems is that they can warn you if you are about to sell an age restricted product, i.e. ‘alcohol product – is the Customer over 18, confirm Y/N’, an on-screen prompt of this nature could actually prevent underage sales and protect your licence. It is important to choose an EPOS system that can give you the information you need to enable you to control your business and grow sales and profitability. It is also important to choose a provider that offers excellent levels of support for hardware and software. Why join a Symbol Group?

Trading under a Symbol Group will give you the competitive edge you need

Today’s Independent Retailers are increasingly under pressure from a variety of sources. The multiples are moving into Convenience Retailing in ever increasing numbers – Tesco Express, Sainsbury’s Local, M&S, Waitrose, Somerfield and Co-op, etc. – and they are opening smaller format Stores in large numbers, often located in neighbourhoods where they compete directly with Independent Retailers. If you are Independent and stand still, you will suffer as multiples and other Symbol operators up their game and take more and more of the Convenience spend.

“Now more than ever, the time is right for Independent Retailers to join a Symbol Group and raise their game…”

Retailers are also under pressure from changing legislation and local authority enforcement – the proposed tobacco display ban and an increasing focus on underage sales are just two good examples. Continued on p30

Why join a Symbol Group? continued The continuing economic uncertainty means that selling prices are under pressure as Consumers increasingly look for better value when they shop. Benefits Symbol Retailing can offer So, now more than ever, the time is right for Independents to consider the benefits that Symbol Retailing can offer – professional advice about Store layout, stock ranges, equipment, promotion packages, legislation and Store services to name but a few. A well laid-out, professionally merchandised Store offering customers all of the key lines and brands supported by a regular promotional programme in a clean, modern, bright and friendly environment will be well placed to grow its share of local trade, compete with multiples and secure its future. Other benefits include a professional, recognisable corporate look with fascia and graphics which will encourage Customers to step inside, deals on equipment and services, direct-to-store drop shipment deals, finance packages and EPOS deals.

When Molineux Service Station in Wolverhampton adopted full Lifestyle Express Evolution specification last year, sales increased by 75% as a direct result. Doal Food & News in Wheaton Aston, Staffordshire – already a successful Lifestyle Express Store – increased sales by a further 17% when they upgraded to Lifestyle Express Evolution.

Retailer Profile

Doal Food & News

Name: Doal Food & News Location: Wheaton Aston, Staffordshire Member since: 2007

Doal Food & News is a family owned Convenience Store located in Wheaton Aston (population approximately 2500), a rural village situated midway between Stafford and Telford. When Mr & Mrs Doal purchased the Store in May 2007, they recognised that it was an integral part of the local community, particularly as the village has a predominantly elderly population and only limited public transport links. Soon after taking over, the Doals decided that a full upgrade and change of identity was needed and undertook a programme of modernisation and development. They joined Lifestyle Express and, after an initial refit, introduced an improved range of chilled and frozen products and fruit and veg, as well as instigating a series of value-for-money promotional offers. In April 2009, they upgraded to the Lifestyle Express Evolution specification which included

the addition of two upright double-door frozen food cabinets, new retail fixtures, wall friezes, hanging signs and promotion bay highlighters. Merchandising was carried out to the latest Lifestyle Express planograms making the Store layout more logical and easier to shop. The news and magazines section, always a key strength, has become a focal point through the addition of illuminated shelving. The Store offers a range of services including facilities for bill payments, mobile top-ups, home news deliveries and photocopying – credit and debit cards are accepted and there is a cash machine. Externally, a metal folded fascia and new window graphics were installed. Customers have welcomed the changes which have given the Store a higher quality, more contemporary feel and have had the effect of increasing sales by 17%.
