Cold Facts There’s nothing quite like an ice cold drink on a warm summer’s day. This is an area where Independent Retailers have a big advantage over the multiples, whether it’s soft drinks, wines, beers, lagers or ciders, keep them cold and you’ll see your sales increase dramatically. Chilling soft drinks increases sales by 60%, an open dairy deck can increase your soft drink sales by a further 8%, and Consumers rate ‘serving temperature’ as the highest ranked attribute of a quality lager. So make sure the chiller is highly visible and make it easy for Customers to find what they want by grouping like products together, this alone can increase your sales by more than 8%. Soft Drinks is the largest grocery category and alcohol is the third most important category for the convenience sector, 58% of convenience store
managers say that beer will drive the greatest sales growth in their business in the next 12 months. And with both soft drink and alcohol categories benefiting from tremendous marketing support and large Consumer campaigns, it’s vital that you capitalise on these great opportunities by stocking, displaying, promoting and chilling a great range of Branded and Own Brand drinks in your store.

Warm Weather + Cold Drinks = Hot Sales Mr and Mrs Dhillion, the owners Lifestyle Express in Greenock, saw their store’s sales rise by 29% following the conversion to Lifestyle Express. They have been actively supporting the joint Landmark/Coors merchandising initiative which has led to a 15% increase in off licence sales, their best seller is now Coors Light which has gone up from 3 to 10 cases a week!
As the nights get lighter and the days warm up, we should be making sure we’re ready for the increased demand for ready-chilled drinks. 50% of soft drinks are bought on impulse and this category is now worth £1.55 billion and growing by a very healthy 7%. Soft drinks perform much better when the sun’s out, just a 1°C increase in temperature leads to a 3.5% increase in sales. According to Britvic research, 84% of ‘drink now’ soft drinks are purchased from the chiller, 92% of kids look in the chiller when choosing a soft drink and 53% of shoppers are willing to pay more for chilled soft drinks. When it comes to beer, further research shows us that 74% of Consumers will drink some or most of the beer on the day of purchase. The message is clear, no-one wants to spend hours waiting for their favourite tipple to chill in the fridge when they get home so, sell drinks cold and make the most of this massive opportunity.
The Cold Hot Drinks segment, products like Lipton Iced Tea, has grown by a massive 101% in the last year and is now worth £4 million in Impulse. Are you stocking these products?
To maximise sales, ensure your chiller is located in a high traffic flow area, in sight of the till and the door, putting chillers at till points increases soft drinks sales by 14%. Pass on the deals from your Wholesaler to drive greater sales and use POS to make sure Customers are aware of deals in-store. Stock up for big nights in, and major sporting fixtures, see ‘Dates for your Diary and Spring into Summer’ for upcoming events, and capitalise on the popularity of alcoholic and soft drinks by using cross-category promotions linking drinks with snacks and other food items.
Join the Club Molson Coors has devised ‘My Cold Beer Club’ to encourage convenience Retailers to promote cold beers in their stores and to display them prominently in their chiller cabinets. Participating Retailers will be advised how they can create Consumer demand and raise the profile of cold beer in their store. Retailers should make sure that the chiller is laid out effectively and clearly, the beer is priced correctly and point of sale signage is used to display ‘Cold beer here’ to the shoppers. Retailers taking part will receive a range of point of sale material and external signage.

Soft Drinks Sales of soft drinks are more than three times the value of total crisps and snacks sales but there is still strong potential for growth. In Great Britain, our soft drinks consumption is currently well behind countries like Ireland, Belgium and Norway, Coca-Cola Enterprises believes there could be an additional £1.4bn category growth over the next five years.
Bottles remain the strongest performing format, making up 70% of total Impulse sales, while Cans account for 24%. You should be prioritising bottles over cans to maximise sales.
‘Eat and drink now’ is the number one reason for shoppers to visit your store; there are more than four billion out-of-home snacking occasions in the UK each year, not including lunches. All this is good news for Independent Retailers who have a fantastic opportunity to cash-in on the multi-billion pound on-the-go market.

Own Brand soft drinks grew by 31.1% in the last year and now account for 35.8% of soft drinks sales suggesting that Consumers are choosing lower-price goods to save money. Core Brands should always be in stock, the top 10 Brands deliver over 60% of all soft drinks sales, but there is a real opportunity for Independent Retailers to stock a good selection of Own Brand alternatives.
Cola remains the largest market segment, worth £409 million and grew by 4% in the last year. However, the Glucose and Stimulant segment really is the star performer in soft drinks growing by a staggering 20% in the last year and now worth £350 million to impulse Retailers each year. Fruit Carbonates are also performing well, with this segment now worth a total of £145 million and growing by 9% in impulse. Juice Drinks, such as Capri Sun, Ribena, Fruit Shoot and Juicy Drench, are the fourth highest performing segment, worth £137 million and enjoying 3% growth.

Sports & Energy Drinks are Energising Soft Drink Sales With Sports & Energy continuing to be one of the fastest growing soft drinks sub categories, currently at +20% and now growing faster than Cola, it has cemented its place as one of the most valuable sectors in the market presenting Independent Retailers with massive profit opportunities. The Sports & Energy category can be defined by three sectors: Sport such as Lucozade Sport; Refreshment such as Lucozade and Mountain Dew; and Functional such as Red Bull and LSV. Over the past year, Sport has declined slightly at -2.2% and Refreshment has grown by 9.9% but it is the functional side of the category that is by far the most profitable sector and has been driving growth adding value at a massive +19.1%. Red Bull trade communications manager Tom Smith says that the sector has benefited from today’s more active lifestyles, “Consumers have less time and have more hectic lifestyles so they are looking for a functional drink that will help get them through the day.�

In-Store ATM Customers visiting your store to use an ATM will rarely leave without spending some of the cash they have just withdrawn. Furthermore him! Research shows that Customers using ATMs in-store spend more money than non-ATM using Customers. Despite the onslaught of rather desperate advertising by card issuers, cash has grown in strength as a means of purchase over the last year or so. Part of this is down to the need people have to budget more carefully; other factors include the the Bank of England’s campaign to issue more “fivers”. ATMs only dispensing £5 Notes have proved tremendously popular with Customers, some ATMs have seen their transactions double since moving to £5 notes only. There is room in the market for both pay-to-use and free-to-use ATMs. Retailers can decide given their own circumstances. On average, pay-to-use ATMs make Retailers substantially more direct profit. from the likes of a Tesco Express that has a free-to-use ATM, it will probably be appropriate to offer a free ATM service. Independent ATM operators generally offer a much superior service than the banks. This is understandable, as they only operate ATMs, so need to do it well if they are to make any profit. ATMs are only a sideline for high street banks. Most banks are gradually reducing their ATM activity away from their branches: fortunately, retailers can rely on independent ATM operators to install the ATMs they need to provide a vital supply of cash for their Customers. ATM security is improving each year. When you consider that there are over 60,000 ATMs in the UK, dispensing £175 Billion each year, the overall impact of crime is relatively small. For example, any individual ATM is on average likely to be directly impacted by criminal activity only once every 30 years or so. That is a statistic that certainly increases our peace of mind. Card fraud at ATMs is also decreasing. ATM operators and the public must of course always
be vigilant in relation to preventing fraud. The reducing crime figures indicate this vigilance is paying off. This is very important because ATMs are responsible for an ever-increasing percentage of total cash supply each year. With cheques gradually disappearing, this trend will continue. Within 5 years, 90% plus of all of the cash circulating in the UK will be withdrawn from ATMs.
