Rise in sales of Halloween goods is no scare story You may think them a nuisance, but Retailers should be thanking ‘trick or treaters’ and those celebrating Halloween for generating an estimated £235m in sales of Halloween goods! That’s a twenty fold increase in just ten years according to industry statistics. It is widely thought that the vast array of Halloween related goods on offer at the Major Multiples has helped grow demand for such products. Convenience stores find that they are benefitting from this phenomenon and are taking advantage by following suit in the products they offer their local Customers. In years gone by, toffee apples and sweets were standard fare to stock up on for Halloween, but now add to that fancy dress costumes,
Halloween Branded Confectionery and toys, and the opportunities to generate extra revenue and profit are manifold. As Halloween takes a greater foothold in the UK, some of the major Suppliers are recognising the potential to grow revenue and getting in on the act. continued on p3

Welcome . . . It’s hard to believe that summer is already over – the BBQs have been packed away for the year and people’s minds are instead turning to warming and wholesome foods. The central heating has been switched on (and the thermostats set a little lower given the recent energy price increases) and the countdown to Christmas has begun. Yet for you the Retailer, there’s little reason to be downbeat. Winter festivities equal big sales opportunities, kicking off with Halloween at the end of this month, followed by Bonfire Night and then the biggest and most lucrative of them all; Christmas and New Year. Halloween hasn’t always been the highlight of the Retail calendar but in recent years the event has grown enormously in popularity and in this issue we look at what products to stock to make the most of this ghostly occasion.

Last year saw Confectionery giant, Cadbury, perhaps with input from their US counterparts at Kraft Foods, launch the ‘Screme Egg’ – a Halloween take on the Easter classic, complete with green fondant filling. Coupled with the explosion in Halloween themed products, many more adults are now holding Halloween parties and purchasing the related food and drink products making Halloween one of the year’s most significant Retail events.

Join in the fun and maximise sales By decorating your store, not only will you be getting into the spirit of the occasion, you will be potentially driving impulse buys, particularly if you take the time to install some Halloween product displays in strategic locations. Suppliers and Wholesalers can offer specialist advice in this area.
Remember, remember the 5th November If you want sales to go off with a bang, remember, Bonfire Night follows only days after Halloween, so make sure to update your stock range accordingly. This year, Bonfire Night falls on a Saturday so expect demand for party goods, particularly Chilled Beers, Cider and Wine to be higher than usual. Not only do firework displays and parties take place on the 5th November itself, but for several days either side of this date.

Plan ahead for Christmas and make this one your best yet Christmas and New Year can be one of the busiest and most profitable times of year for the Independent Retailer, but with careful planning there are further ways to maximise footfall and revenue. With many Industries still suffering the effects of the economic slowdown the Convenience Sector has shown itself to be more resilient. At times of the year such as Christmas, Customers are looking to make as many savings as they can and whether this means cutting down on car journeys and shopping locally, or swapping usual Brands for value alternatives, Independent Retailers can benefit from changing habits. While research shows Consumers are planning to spend less on presents and decorations than in previous years, they are still planning to spend similar amounts on food and drink although they may consider cheaper alternatives.
Do they know it’s Christmas? By installing festive displays In-Store well before Christmas, your Customers will get to know they can come to you for their festive food and drink requirements. Be mindful that most Customers will be carrying out their main shop at the Multiples, and we’re not suggesting that you try to compete by filling your shelves with turkeys and sprouts, but here we give you some ideas for typical products Customers look for at their local convenience store at the last minute.
Added extras If you’re looking to expand product lines this Christmas a good starting point would be cards, crackers and batteries which are perennially popular. Another product which sells well in convenience stores are gift bags, this gives Customers the opportunity to offer, for example, bottles of wine/spirits or chocolates as Christmas gifts. If Christmas is a particularly busy period for your store, many Suppliers offer some great new products at this time of year, some seasonally-themed, which you would do well to consider. Finally, we’re all guilty of a little over indulgence at Christmas and New Year, so review the stock of your over-the-counter medicine and make sure you offer the most popular pain killers and indigestion packs!

Don’t forget the biscuits Believe it or not, a whopping 98% of British households buy biscuits over the festive period both for personal consumption and as a gift, so it’s essential you increase your premium and tinned ranges at this time of year as well as replenishing your existing offering. It can be a good idea to cross promote party essentials such as Crisps and Snacks with Soft Drinks and Confectionery.
Top tips for maximising Alcohol sales this Christmas: • Premium wines are growing in popularity, both as a Christmas tipple or to give as a gift, so add premium Brands and Champagne to your range with gift bags alongside • The Chilled offering is where the Independent Retailer can stand out from the Multiples so make sure your range of Chilled Beers, Wine and Cider are always well stocked • Customers are more likely to trade-up to larger packs at this time of year so stock cases of Beer and Cider • Make sure your POS looks great and communicates any offers you are running. It would be impossible to match the promotions of the big Multiples, but they can’t match you for location and convenience • Sampling can entice Customers into trying and purchasing new Brands, so wine tasting in the run up to Christmas could more than pay for itself • Consider stocking gift packs of the traditional Christmas tipples such as Bailey’s and Malt Whiskey.

Christmas Cheer Alcohol remains the leading Category for sales at Christmas and despite the Multiple’s price wars at this time of year the opportunity for Independent Retailers to increase sales is huge if you meet the needs of your Customers. Spirits offer excellent margin and the majority of Consumers only buy in November and December, so make sure you stock a varied range at this time of year. Landmark Wholesale Own Brand ranges such as Prince Consort offer even greater margin than the recognised Brands and have grown hugely in popularity amongst convenience shoppers. Your Wholesaler will be able to offer advice about which to stock. And remember, it’s not just alcohol that’s popular at Christmas time, Soft Drinks are big sellers too so encourage trading up by stocking some premium Brands alongside Own Brand alternatives which are popular all year round. As a rule of thumb, Customers are willing to spend a little extra over the festive season but it’s important not to neglect stock levels of your core product range.
Christmas Promotions More than ever, your Customers are looking for better value for money. They may be willing to spend an extra pound or two over the festive period but look to their local convenience store for great value alternatives, therefore promotions can go a long way to generating extra sales. Your Landmark Wholesaler will be running several promotions you can benefit from in the run up to Christmas, so it would be worth your while passing these on to your Customers. Multi-buy promotions can be a good idea as at this time of year many Customers are looking to fill their cupboards so they can relax over the festive period. Gift packs, seasonal specials and festive-themed products can also work well. To increase basket spend, think about implementing some cross-Category promotions. Party essentials such as Crisps and Snacks go hand-in-hand with Soft Drinks as an example. For all promotions, clear POS is the key to success alongside eye-catching and wellstocked displays.
Christmas = Community A true convenience store recognises the part it plays in the local community. This Christmas, make sure your Customers know what time you will be open, they will appreciate you being there when they’ve forgotten the gravy for the turkey or the After Eights for Aunt Peggy! You could advertise In-Store or even invest in a leaflet drop to the homes in your catchment area. Make sure your store captures the Christmas spirit, with seasonal window displays and In-Store decorations. The big Supermarkets can be dreadful places to shop in the run-up to Christmas, so remind your Customers what a great and friendly store they have on their doorstep by offering free
mince pies or perhaps supporting a local charity in a Christmas fund-raising event. Your role as a community store, one that remembers its Customer’s names and offers service with a real smile is a unique point of difference from the faceless Multiple giants, so be sure to make the most of your position this Christmas. The large Chocolate and Sugar Confectionery Suppliers continue to flood the market with new product innovations, which is seen as key to keeping the Category fresh and interesting for the Consumer. Using displays can drive trial of new products in your store, but Suppliers recommend using multi-buy deals to increase the rate of sale. These products are heavily advertised and promoted by the Suppliers so it would be wise to take advantage of this
publicity which can only encourage Customers to seek out the products in your store.

Raise a pint glass to better alcohol sales Ask convenience store Customers to list their most popular purchases and Beer is likely to feature high up, if not top of that list. Beer is absolutely crucial to the convenience market, the Off-Trade Beer market is now worth £3.6b and still growing, so follow our guide to increasing profits and sales in this key Category. It’s important to get your range right, Cider has also been growing in popularity so be sure to strike the right balance between the two, 65% allocated to Beer and 35% to Cider is the general recommendation.

Price-marked packs have instant appeal to shoppers and can be the key driver of an impulse purchase. One of the biggest factors influencing impulse purchasing is the location of the display and therefore using your store’s ‘hotspots’ will help to lift sales. Less than half of purchasing is planned so capitalise on this fact by moving beer to a more prominent area of your store, but be sure to check the details of your licence as it may dictate where you can display Alcohol. Different drinking occasions require different pack sizes, so stock across the board where you can.
Chill more, sell more Customers are four times more likely to purchase Beer when it’s chilled so consider dedicating more space to chiller units, as it usually pays to do so. Coupled with the fact

that 57% of Beer purchased from convenience stores is consumed within three hours, it’s clear to see that the more Chilled Beer you can offer, the better the sales. Chilled Beer sales can give you the edge over the Multiples.
Cater for every occasion The days of the week act as a guide to how Beer is bought. Mid-week drinking occasions tend to be at home, whereas demand for cases and multi-packs is higher on Fridays and Saturdays when more shared drinking occasions take place. The point to be made is that by varying your offering and making sure plenty of four and eight packs are available between 4pm and 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays will ensure you cater for as many Customers as possible.
Cross Category promotional opportunities Linking Beer Brands to other product Categories such as Crisps and Snacks can help create new or additional purchases. In addition, think about which key events are coming up which might have an impact on Beer sales such as a sporting event or a popular television final. Our key dates for the diary will help to identify some such opportunities to generate more sales.
Christmas Spirit Traditionally, sales of Spirits over the festive period soar and reach levels seen at no other time during the year. As mentioned previously in this issue, the majority of Customers only buy Spirits in the months of November and December and it is estimated that 30% of all annual Spirit sales take place at this time of year. continued on p14

With many more people spending more money on drinking alcohol at home than ever before, there’s no reason why sales of Spirits couldn’t soar all year round and we look at how attention paid to range management and merchandising could benefit your business.
Getting the range right Think of Spirits and the big Brands spring to mind. It’s important to stock them, but bear in mind that the range and quality of Own Brand spirits such as Landmark Wholesale’s Prince Consort range have improved immeasurably over the last couple of years. When it comes to Spirits, size matters – a variety of sizes across the product range is essential from miniatures to litre bottles and upwards.
Bringing Spirits into view When it comes to merchandising your range, it’s important to make sure you and your staff keep on top of stock levels. Customers shopping for Spirits tend to know what they’re looking for, so if they can’t see the product they want, they’re likely to shop elsewhere. In fact, one third will go elsewhere which is a big missed opportunity. Most Spirits are consumed with Mixers so display these close by and consider crosspromotions to uplift sales. Your local Landmark Wholesaler will regularly have special offers on recommended Brands, local choice options and Own Brand, so use these to drive volume sales by promoting through to your Customers. Make sure to highlight any offers with clear POS and Shelf Talkers.
Spirits represent some of your most valuable stock, so for some shop owners, understandably this means they are kept behind the counter. Bringing Spirits onto the shop floor means greater attention has to be paid to security but research shows you can expect sales to increase dramatically. Some of the security measures employed by the Multiples such as security cap systems are easy and cost effective to introduce and by displaying your stock where prices are not obscured and Customers can browse the entire range can transform this lucrative Category and drive volume sales. Diageo Free Your Spirits trials reported that Retailers using the caps have seen an average increase in sales across the Category of 37%.
Pocket more margin with Own Brand Exclusive to Landmark Wholesale, the Prince Consort range of spirits continues to go from strength to strength with many Customers choosing to swap from their regular Brands and Retailers enjoying healthier margins by stocking the range. Sales of Medicated Confectionery not to be sniffed at Although seasonal cold and flu symptoms occur in significant numbers throughout the year, it perhaps comes as no surprise that winter sees a peak in these illnesses that pushes sales of Medicated Confectionery up by over two thirds at this time. The Medicated Confectionery Category is worth £22.8m to the Independent Retail channel
and from cough sweets to cold remedies, UK shoppers are turning to over the counter remedies in ever increasing numbers to help relieve their symptoms. Products can be broadly split into two Categories – ‘Hardcore Colds’ products (e.g. Lemsip Max) and those to treat milder symptoms such as pleasant tasting throat sweets. The ‘Hardcore Colds’ sub-Category follows a growth of 31.2% from the previous year. In the last year, sales of Medicated Confectionery in the Convenience Sector has seen decline with sales being lost to the Multiples so here we look at ways to help win those sales back:

Confectionery – a sweet Category for Convenience Despite Chocolate and Sweet Confectionery showing signs of slight decline over the last twelve months, it is a Category that remains hugely important to the Convenience Sector. The Mars 2011 Market Review has highlighted the extent to which Retailers stand to profit from Confectionery products if they continue to engage with their shoppers. Importantly, the Company predicts an increase in convenience store use, driven by shoppers’ change in lifestyle – 31% of shoppers are using a local convenience store on average four or more times a week and recommend that Retailers should capitalise on this fact by driving impulse sales. The report also revealed: • Impulse purchases rely heavily on value for money and good product availability • Consumers are shopping around for the best deals and promotions • Competition from the Multiples will only get tougher so Independent Retailers must work harder to understand their Customers and anticipate demand • Strategically placed secondary Confectionery sites can show an uplift of up to 44% in sales.

The large Chocolate and Sugar Confectionery Suppliers continue to flood the market with new product innovations, which is seen as key to keeping the Category fresh and interesting for the Consumer. Using displays can drive trial of new products in your store, but Suppliers recommend using multi-buy deals to increase the rate of sale. These products are heavily advertised and promoted by the Suppliers so it would be wise to take advantage of this publicity which can only encourage Customers to seek out the products in your store.
