Put a Spring in your Sales and Profit Spring and growth go hand in hand so, with a number of major sales opportunities on the horizon, Retailers should look forward to a busy time as 2012 gets into its stride. This year, three major events take place over a 24 day period. St Patrick’s Day falls on Saturday 17 March and, following hot on the heels of that famous Irish celebration is the alwayspopular Mothering Sunday, which in 2012 is celebrated the day after St Patrick’s Day on Sunday 18 March. Traditionally it’s on this day that Mums, the length and breadth of the Country, will be spoiled with gifts of chocolates, flowers, cards and maybe a bottle of rosé wine so the day offers one of the best opportunities of the year.
Be sure to re-stock your shelves in time for the Easter event which provides the year’s biggest choc-feast. Welcome . . . Welcome to the first edition of Retailer Matters for 2012 and what a year it promises to be! Now that the Christmas decorations are stacked away for another twelve months you can begin to concentrate on the fantastic Retail opportunities coming your way in the months ahead. 2012 is all set to be a bumper year full of opportunities and this, the ‘summer of all summers’, is sure to provide you with sales opportunities in abundance. There are some amazing events on the horizon this year. Starting with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Euro 2012 football finals and quickly followed by the massive event of the year, the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. There’s a lot going on and each event will provide opportunities to boost your sales and help maximise your profits. There’ll be more on these events in our next edition so, watch this space. Meanwhile, before we get to the ‘summer of all summers’, we’ve got some excellent, regular calendar events of which you should make the most of, and with St Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter falling in close succession, you should ensure you keep your stock levels high to cope with the demand that such popular events bring with them. Two key Categories, Confectionery and Pet Food have the spotlight shined on them in this edition and don’t forget to check out the ‘Dates for the Diary’ for a list of other forthcoming major events. This edition also includes news of the Tobacco display ban in large Stores which comes into force on 6 April and how this ban could provide opportunities for smaller Retailers. We will also be offering advice for Retailers on how to maximise this opportunity in forthcoming editions.

It’s never too early to prepare for this major event and forward planning will help maximise sales and profits. Make sure you have stocked up on Crème Eggs which head to the forefront of shoppers’ minds long before the first Easter bunny makes an appearance. Spring brings a number of high-profile gifting events of which you should take full advantage and, with plenty of freshly-themed, mouthwatering confectionery products coming to the market, you should ensure that your stocks reflect a good selection from the excellent range on offer. Additionally by providing a good selection of greetings cards and floral offerings you can provide your Customers with the chance to buy all of their gifts – chocolates, confectionery, cards and flowers – at your Store.

Mother’s Day
As Valentine’s Day becomes a distant memory, the next event on which to focus your sales efforts is the ever popular St Patrick’s Day.
Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday as it is often termed, is the one day of the year when Mums relax and the treats flow in. Make sure you’re ready for the outpouring of generosity coming Mother’s way by stacking your shelves with everything the grateful family member, be they Daughters or Sons, needs to make Mum’s day extra special. Figures published last year by the British Retail Consortium estimated the day to be worth an average of £1.6b to Retailers with sales in the two weeks before the event reaching double the normal weekly average. It’s a fact that more greetings cards and cut flowers are sold for Mother’s Day than for Valentine’s Day. Mixed bouquets are often the most popular choice but market research has shown that the old favourites, roses and tulips also sell extremely well.
Over the years St Patrick’s Day has become increasingly celebrated internationally, not just in Ireland, and nowhere more so than in mainland UK. The event gives friends and family the opportunity to swap gifts, flowers, cards and confectionery and to celebrate the feast day in style, so why not come up with a St Patrick’s Day display using green ribbon, shamrock and maybe even leprechauns? And, if alcohol is one of your stock items, don’t forget the Guinness. Over ten million glasses of Guinness are consumed every day and that number increases over the St Patrick’s Day celebration so make sure you’re stocked up!
Easter Market The Easter Market provides manufacturers with a great opportunity to launch themed products and there are numerous examples out there to whet your Customers’ appetites. All of the main manufacturers including Cadbury, Mars and Nestlé have come up with exciting additions. Novelty products always bring a little excitement to the market and springtime treats like Smarties Little Choc Chick from Nestle Confectionery is a great example. The Aero Mint Lamb with a delicious bubbly peppermint centre makes its first appearance this Spring. Cadbury has been hard at work launching an innovative new bitesize product perfect for sharing: Cadbury Crème Egg Splats join the existing bitesize range complete with a Crème Egg goo filing. Getting in on the sharing act Galaxy has introduced a mini version of its Caramel Filled Eggs. Each pack contains eight individually wrapped eggs with a smooth chocolate caramel centre.

Furthermore the trend in the market for sharing chocolate treats is on the increase with Consumers buying bite-size packs, many of which will be launched in time for the Easter market, so make sure you take advantage of this new trend and stock up. Spring provides Retailers with numerous great opportunities so don’t waste the chance to push those sales. Suppliers are keen to promote new ideas and often these new launches strike a chord with Consumers, so consider them as well as the old favourites. Spring time heralds with it new growth and, with a little effort, you can make sure your sales figures reflect the trend! No Mothering Sunday gift would be complete without Mum’s favourite, the ubiquitous box of chocolates. An estimated £65m was spent on Mum’s chocs last year, so make sure your supply is ready to hit that demand again this year. The Chocolate and Confectionery market in the UK is one Sector that continues to buck the trend and is showing growth, with Consumers treating themselves, friends and loved-ones to mouth-watering treats, many of which come to market at this time of year. Don’t forget, you needn’t stick to the Core Branded options which tend to be stocked by the supermarkets, the choice is amazing. A Mother’s Day display is a sure fire way to get your Mothering Sunday offering noticed and entice those buyers to purchase cards, flowers, chocolates, Champagne and rosé wine. Remember, as well as chocolates, sugar confectionery – including toffees and caramels, gums, jellies and boiled sweets – continues to sell well and a small growth in the market is expected to continue this year. Don’t forget to stock a full range covering all price points as this is a great way to maximise your sales potential.
Easter Chocolate, flowers and cards remain on the agenda when, in Early April, we celebrate the first shoots of spring courtesy of the Easter weekend. Good Friday heralds four days of chocolate heaven for all the family so make sure you have something for everyone from the tiniest taste buds to the more mature dark chocolate pallet. As with Mother’s Day you should back up your chocolate offering with a range of cards and flowers and the four-day event is worthy of your best efforts when it comes to displaying your products. Engaging In-Store communication will aid your sales effort so push the boat out this Easter with daffodils, bunnies, chicks and ducklings to help move those eggs. With the chocolate market continuing to rise both in terms of value and volume Easter is a great opportunity to take advantage of this trend.
Easter Gifts for him Ladies looking for an Easter gift for the man in their life may be tempted by a new offering from Yorkie. The retro Yorkie Digger Egg (RRP £5.59) comprises a hollow milk chocolate egg with two Yorkie Milk bars packaged in an eye-catching, digger presentation box.
Cadbury Medal Egg Launched in time for the Easter market but sure to have a longer impact, Cadbury has unveiled its Medal Egg, as official treat provider of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games. The box includes a Cadbury Dairy Milk Egg along with a Dairy Milk chocolate medal indented on one side with the Union Jack.

EPoS - Are you giving enough shelf space to your Best Sellers? Whilst Ronnie Barker’s till in the hit BBC comedy series Open All Hours needed some gentle persuasion with a hammer, today’s electronic point of sale technology (EPoS) tends to be a little easier to use and a lot more beneficial to the business. EPoS systems come in all shapes and sizes and may be designed to suit your business needs. Basically they comprise of some computer hardware and peripherals designed to run EPoS software. The kit may be chosen with your particular business in mind, for instance the type of scanners, cash drawers and touch screen terminals as well as chip and pin, weighing scales and remote PDAs for mobile EPoS integration. The list is endless and there’s bound to be an EPoS system to suit your business. As well as bespoke hardware, the EPoS software can be heavily customised to suit your requirements.
EPoS software provides a powerful business tool yet its operation is remarkably simple for staff to learn and, once they’re up and running, cashiers and staff are able to provide the best possible Customer service. On a day-to-day basis EPoS systems provide a fast and efficient Customer interface. The system works out sales totals and calculates required change before issuing till receipts. If
required the system is able to link directly with credit and debit card payment systems. EPoS systems by definition reduce human error and lead to faster transactions. EPoS systems are able to record sales and simultaneously update stock levels, ensuring that adequate supplies of goods are available at all times. The software provides accurate pricing information and makes price changing an easy exercise. Category Focus - Pet Food It’s an amazing fact but well over half of all households in the UK own a pet! If we look closer at the figure we find that four out of ten households in the UK are home to either a dog or a cat. These figures provide a first class opportunity for you to improve your profits by stocking pet food and care items.
Keep your display simple and always follow Grocery trends so that Customers are able to find the products they’d normally go for on their big shops. So, with cat and dog owners forming a substantial portion of small Store visitors, make sure you take the lead and keep a wellstocked pet care section filled with pooch and kitty’s favourites!
• Strong growth in the pet care market is being driven by cat treats. • With 60% of Convenience shoppers buying on impulse, secondary siting is the key to success.
And with four-legged friends requiring just as many treats as their two-legged owners, it’s important to make sure you have a good stock of top selling items available, as pet food is a perfect impulse purchase. Recent figures show that pet care shopping at small Stores is typically an Impulse or topup buy. Furthermore almost one quarter of shoppers do not know they can buy pet care items in their local small Store. To tap into this market, make sure you stock the best Brands, as pet owners often only purchase their animal’s favourite items.
Category Focus - Confectionery Confectionery is the ideal product for lifting the spirit and, with belt-tightening still on the agenda for many in the UK, what better time to give your shoppers a boost. For small Store sales, Confectionery is a winner and, with figures – according to a Mintel report – continuing to rise, and set to do so until 2015, you should make the most of opportunities to promote Confectionery in all of its forms. The trend of buying chocolate and sweets to share with family and friends is on the increase. Figures supplied by Mars suggest that sales on ‘in-home’ leisure are set to grow steadily, with chocolate taking a large share. With more and more families deciding on a ‘big night in’ rather than going out at the weekend, indulgent 100g bars are now the affordable luxury, to which every family member can look forward. • As well as a growth in chocolate sales, both toffees & caramels and gums & jellies are continuing to see strong growth.
It’s a good idea to stock as wide a range as possible with something to suit all pockets and all tastes. Make sure you have everything from the indulgent large boxes of chocolates to the affordable roll-wraps, bags including Revels and Maltesers and tubes such as Smarties. Try and ensure you have a full and visible display and that you stock all the old favourites. We’re heading for a bumper season for the Confectionery market with Mother’s Day and Easter on the horizon so, make sure you’re
ready to meet the demand, with fully stocked Confectionery stands to whet the appetites of those sweet-toothed shoppers.

Time to take a fresh look in 2012… Sparkling Wine, 5%
What better time than the start of a new year to review what is working and what isn’t in your store. The alcohol category is an important part of your store and here are a few pointers to help refresh your alcohol offering.
RTD, 3%
Start with your total alcohol fridge and make sure you are allocating space in line with sales.
Wine (White & Rose), 30%
Lager, 46%
Nielsen data indicates that chiller space should be allocated as in the chart to the left, for example lager should account for nearly half of your fridge space. Focusing on the beer category, look at your sales for 2011. Do you have enough availability of the star performers?
Cider, 13%
Ale & Stout (can), 3%
Review the packs you are stocking – 9 out of 10 beer sales in local shops are in 1 to 8 packs, and over 80% of sales are in can format. Does your beer offer reflect this? Look at categories, like World Beers, that are growing and consider giving them more emphasis. Do you give enough space to brands such as Cobra, Corona and Peroni in the chiller? And remember Cold Beer from the fridge is the key difference between you and supermarkets. Are you communicating your Cold Beer availability to shoppers as clearly as possible?

Are you confused by the Tobacco Display Ban? With the Tobacco Display Ban coming into force in England on April 6th this year, Stores over 3,000sq ft will have to ‘go dark’ when they will no longer be able to display tobacco products.
To take advantage of the ban smaller Retailers are being advised to keep their tobacco gantries well stocked with good availability of key Brands, a strong Own Brand offer and friendly and helpful service at all times.
Future editions of Retailer Matters will feature advice for Independent Retailers on how to make the most of larger Stores ‘going dark’ and on how to make the most of this sales opportunity.
Does this present small Independent Retailers with a big opportunity to steal a march on the supermarkets? Small Stores have 3 years to capitalise on the ban in large Stores and maximise sales as it does not come into effect until 2015 if your Store is under the 3,000sq ft threshold. The timing for display bans in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are still to be confirmed. The display ban will affect most of the Multiples and largest Convenience Stores, Customers will still be able to buy tobacco products in the usual way, but wont be able to see them. Not being able to view the tobacco display means that many Customers could possibly switch their cigarette and tobacco purchasing habits to smaller Stores where the display ban doesn’t apply. This represents a real opportunity for smaller Stores to capture more of the market.
