A British coach is breaking the self-help mould by telling women to stop dieting and stop trying to be perfect, because it’s making them miserable. Mum-of-three Jaelithe Leigh-Brown (38) started writing ‘The Happy Woman: What You Can Learn from Kids, Dogs and Men’ when she was up during the night, feeding her daughter Eden (now 3). The book shows women the small changes they can make to break away from life’s pressures, so they can be happier each day. Jaelithe explained: “The modern woman is a master juggler. From our partners to our children, our friends to our career, life is more demanding than ever. Expectations on us are even greater. And we’re supposed to take it all in our stride and smile. There’s too much pressure on women to be someone they’re not and it’s getting them down.” In fact, between 60% and 90% of people with Seasonal Affective Disorder are women and women are more likely than men to have a common mental health problem. Using observations, insights and recognised life coaching techniques, Happiness Coach Jaelithe Leigh-Brown shows women how it’s still possible to be everything to everyone without sacrificing the single most important thing - our own happiness. And it starts at home, with a look at some of those closest to us: kids, dogs and men. Men generally are better at taking ‘me time’ and switching off to the pressures or ‘to dos’ that life can throw at them. They’re also better at believing in themselves and in their abilities. “I had three kids in the space of four years, and despite being a positive person, found it easy to get bogged down with my business, the housework, trying to be a perfect mum, wife, daughter and friend. I also had a personal bereavement and was told I’d end up in a wheelchair by the time I was 45, due to damaging my knees. My self confidence took a beating and I noticed every other woman I knew was feeling down, whether they had children or not. I wanted to change that and let women know that they can be

When it’s grey and gloomy outside and the days are short, it can be hard to motivate yourself to get up and do exercise, so here’s some top tips to staying active over the winter. Brave the weather It’s easy to be put off, but going outside is all in the preparation and attitude. Wrap up warmly, wear decent footwear and once you are out there, you might even enjoy it! Cold conditions give a boost to the conversion of white fat cells to brown, which burn energy to keep us warm. Outdoor exercise increases exposure to daylight and Vitamin D, helping to increase endorphins and improving both your mood and bone strength. Exercise indoors If the weather really is appalling, try an exercise DVD or repeatedly going up and down the stairs. Gyms often have tempting trials or short term deals, and many council gyms are now high spec and reasonably priced.The price of exercising indoors is an investment in your long term health that’s worth paying. Ditch the excuses Modern life is busy, with work and family often taking priority. It’s easy to think you have too many other things on and that it is selfish to take time out. However, studies show we are more efficient at work if we make time for exercise,

whilst the ‘head space’ helps with thinking and prioritising. Exercise makes you healthier and happier, improves concentration and increases energy levels. Exercise with others It can be hard to get going on your own. Going for a walk with a partner, friend or family makes it more pleasant, and meeting up with someone helps make sure you stay committed. It’s a great way to make new acquaintances and catch up with old ones at this social time of year. Set goals and monitor yourself You are more likely to be successful in maintaining weight or losing a few pounds if you know what your goals are and you record what you do. You can do this manually, or use technology to help. Activity can be monitored by a wearable device to record how many steps you take, how much ground you cover and even how much sleep you have. Most health bodies recommend 10 000 steps a day. You might be surprised by how little or how much you do, and how much small things like using the stairs, a 10 minute walk at lunchtime or walking kids to school can make. A first for the British fashion industry, a mannequin has been made based on the exact measurements of a real customer, Harriet Winters, using innovative 3D scanning and printing technology. Fashion brand, Long Tall Sally ran a competition to create a mannequin that truly represented a real woman’s body shape, resulting in the ‘Harriet’ mannequin. At 6 ft tall and a size 14, Harriet’s mannequin is quite a contrast to the standard 5 ft 9, size 8 figures present in many stores. A survey of 1,018 UK gym goers, carried out by personal training course provider Beabetteryoucourses.co.uk <http:// www.beabetteryoucourses.co.uk/> , found 58% fib to others about going to the gym.The research shows that 9 out of 10 Brits ditch plans to go to the gym at least once a week.Top five reasons for avoiding a workout include being too tired (46%), forgetting a gym kit (42%), the weather being ‘too hot’ or ‘too cold’ (36%), a busy gym (26%) and eating too much (25%). A third of those surveyed confessed to wasting money on their gym membership after only visiting their gym once over the past month. New research by TomTom Sports has revealed that Brits feel in the dark when it comes to health and fitness, and face a constant battle to exercise effectively.The survey, commissioned to mark the launch of TomTom Touch <http://tomtom.com/ en_gb/sports/fitness-trackers/> , the World’s first Fitness Tracker to analyse body composition, found that the majority of Brits face a continuous battle to maintain a healthy body with a staggering 83% admitting they are concerned about managing their weight and 40% admitting that they weigh themselves at least once a week. Despite weighing themselves every day, nearly one in five stated they were unsuccessful at achieving their goals, with 11% putting this down to lack of awareness of the best way to shape up. Overwhelmingly the nation’s main fitness goal is to stay healthy (40%), while 35% want to focus on actually losing weight or slimming down and 18% want to improve their fitness level. Brits who admit they struggle to reach their goals find it challenging to understand key measurements of health and fitness and how they can affect change to their bodies through exercise. TOP TIPS TO PREVENT INJURY WHEN RUNNING Running is an easy and affordable way to get fit, which makes it popular with all skill and fitness levels. However, running can cause all sorts of injuries such as shin splints, muscle pulls, Achilles tendinitis, and more. Gemma Davison from FirstAid4Sport gives her top tips for avoiding common injuries. 1. Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet Hydration and a healthy diet will ensure that your muscles and limbs are well nourished, enhancing your performance and giving you the best chance of avoiding injury. 2. Warm up and cool down This is vital. If your muscles are not warm before you run, the risk of injury increases. Similarly, make sure you stretch post run to reduce the build-up of lactic acid, particularly in the calves and thighs. 3. Wear fitted, supportive trainers Running in shoes that do not fit or do not have appropriate support is bad for your ankles. Be wise with your footwear to keep your ankles strong. 4. Do not push yourself too hard You can easily overdo your exercise when you are trying to get fit. It is important to work with your body and slowly increase your exercise to avoid strain and injury. 5. Incorporate in strength training In addition to cardio and as a way of working on your running style, you should engage in some strengthening exercises. This will make the core muscles involved in running stronger. Even a small adjustment in your posture or in your core stability can make a huge impact.” Lynne shares her top 3 Pre-Run moves: Spine Curls 1.Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet in parallel on the floor. 2. Breathe out as you curl your tailbone under, tilting your pelvis backwards as you peel your spine off the mat one vertebra at a time, lengthening your knees away from your hips. Roll up to the tips of the shoulder blades. 3. Breathe in and hold the position, focusing on the length in your spine. Breathe out as you roll the spine back down, wheeling each bone down in turn. Breathe in as you release the pelvis back to level again. 4. Repeat 10 times. Oyster 1.Start by lying straight on your side with your bottom arm under your head and your top hand on the mat in front of you. 2.Bend your knees and draw your feet back, so that your heels are aligned with the back of your pelvis. Place a cushion between your knees. 3.Exhaling, open out your top knee from the hip joint, keeping your feet connected. Keep your pelvis stable. 4. Inhaling, return your leg to the starting position with control. Repeat 10 times on each side. Prone knee lifts 1. Lie on your front. Rest your forehead on a folded towel and place your fingertips under your pelvic bones. 2. Bend your right leg to a 90-degree angle. Maintaining the position and stability of your pelvis breathe in and lift the leg up slightly off the mat. 3. What to do: Heat the oven to 200C. Drain the chickpeas and spread them over a large oven tray. Divide the broccoli into small florets, toss those onto the baking tray too and drizzle with the sesame oil and sprinkle with cayenne and a good pinch of salt. Shake the pan to coat everything and roast for 15 minutes. Meanwhile divide the carrot and leaves between two bowls then make the dressing. In a small bowl mix together the lemon juice, tahini, garlic powder and enough water to make it a drizzly consistency. Stir in the sesame seeds and season to taste with salt and pepper. Once the chickpeas and broccoli are toasty pile those into the bowls along with the leaves and carrot then drizzle over the dressing adding some parsley leaves as you go. With 87% of employees blaming their workplace for making them ill, is it time to make a change in your career or work environment?

We may dedicate many hours to the workplace, often through very little choice, and, for some, the thought of going to work on a Monday morning can be a daunting prospect. Sadly, it doesn’t stop there. According to new research by health and wellbeing provider, Benenden, your job could also be drastically affecting your health. A survey of 2,000 employed people today reveals that a huge 87% of employees blame their workplace for making them ill, with only 25% saying they feel healthy at work on a regular basis. In addition, half of those surveyed (50%) said they felt depressed at work, with just 40% admitting they are happy in their place of work. The survey shows that we are a nation of hard workers, regardless of whether we are ill or not, with 46% saying they still go into work despite being ill. And whether ill or not, once in work, those surveyed confessed to having regular health issues, with backache (84%) eye strain (42%) and regular migraines (27%) all being part of working life. In addition, just under half of respondents (at 44%), reported being regularly stressed at work, with a further 91% feeling tired several times a week at their desk. Nearly two thirds of workers (58%) said that work worries keep them awake at night.

The survey also showed that it can often be difficult to try to stay fit and healthy at work. More than half of those in employment (54%), said that continual work commitments stop them from getting to the gym. Recently, research has found that the term “multi-tasking” isn’t possible, as our brains can’t actually do two things at once. Instead we are “rapid task switching” when trying to be on emails and participate in meetings at the same time. Scientists have shown that people who multi-task have trouble paying attention, and are not processing information as effectively they could be. So why do we feel so compelled to keeping checking our phones, and find it impossible to put them away?

NICE cite pelvic floor muscle training as the ‘first-line treatment’ for women with SUI (NICE, 2015). Empirical evidence has linked the strength of the pelvic floor to urinary incontinence symptoms (Dumoulin et al, 2014). The physiology of high impact stress incontinence is complex, and while the future may hold more targeted treatments, the majority of women experience symptom relief through pelvic floor strengthening. It is therefore justifiable to assume that the cause of SUI in high-impact athletes is at least in part their pelvic floor.

Get yourself noticed by removing any old pictures and swapping them for sunny snaps. Update your profile and let people know what you have been up to recently. Set yourself mini challenges e.g. make a new friend each week – the more people you meet the more likely you are to find someone you click with. Not everyone will take your fancy but by meeting more people you improve your communication skills and learn to talk to just about anyone. This will give you confidence on a date and you won’t feel as nervous in front of someone you do fancy. Date night – dedicate one night a week to broadening your dating horizons. You don’t necessarily have to go on a romantic date, but dedicate that one night a week to trying something different. It’s a great way to explore the city and meet new people. BDD is an anxiety disorder whereby a person has a distorted view of how they look and they obsessively worry about their appearance. BDD is complex and much more than simply saying ‘I hate my body’ and can be linked with depression, eating disorders, shame and low self esteem and can therefore negatively affect the person’s life. Do you think there has been a rise in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and low body confidence in recent years? And If so what would you pin as the key contributing factors? There certainly has been a rise in body dysmorphic disorder and low body confidence in recent years. As with eating disorders, it is seen mostly in girls, but women of all ages and men suffer from the disorder too. During early childhood, we begin to form our perceptions of our body’s attractiveness and this body image continues to form as we grow and receive positive feedback from family, teachers, peers etc. Therefore it is crucial in these formative years that we give our children love, encouragement, praise and not criticism and never negativity or insults. In my experience of over 30 years, intense jealousy by peers of perceived ‘pretty girls and ‘handsome guys’ makes them more likely to develop BDD, as they are often called ‘ugly’ and they begin to believe this. What are the most common body hang ups you see in your clinic? The most common body hangups that I see in my clinics are where the person has an unrealistic view of their overall body image and they think they are bigger than they actually are, particularly their thighs and tummy. They obsessively compare themselves with the body image of a friend, or particular celebrity or magazine images, and can become obsessed with that person and with constant self-scrutiny and body shaming. Conversely, it can be the opposite, where they perceive their body as much smaller, until they see a photograph, which

shocks and upsets them. How can hypnotherapy help to overcome these issues? Hypnotherapy is an invaluable tool. Nobody is born to have body dysmorphic disorder, so it has become a learned behaviour. This is where hypnosis comes into play, to help change those negative thoughts into positives. I use psychotherapy in order to locate where these irrational thoughts come from and then through hypnosis, I endeavour to ‘delete’ the negative files (just like deleting files from a computer) and subsequently the body dysmorphia and associated thoughts. To what extent do you think the use of social media and filters has contributed to this trend? Social media has contributed enormously to the rise in BDD, as most young people are on these sites and they are bullied into believing they are ‘fat’ or ‘ugly’. Personally, I object to these words, or indeed labels of any kind, but these words are certainly widely used. There are so many ways in which the media and social media promote unhealthy messages about how beauty equates to photoshopped and distorted body images.Young people, in particular, are often very impressionable as they are still learning from mentors, and take on board these messages which can in turn overtake their thought process and affect their work at school and university. They can become reclusive and spend hours and hours on social media. Just writing this piece makes me upset for all the people I have helped over the years, as they are traumatised. I shall continue to do everything in my power to make a difference and stamp this out. What advice would you give to anyone suffering from these kind of negative thoughts and behaviours? Getting treatment for distorted body image is a critical step to recovery. The problem won’t just go away by itself. With hypnosis, I teach you to begin a journey towards self acceptance and to rise above destructive thoughts and behaviours, which enables a fundamental change in the way you see and think about yourself. Young children and teenagers go through a rollercoaster of intense emotions and body changes, and this is, for some, a very painful and difficult time. Fortunately, parents have the opportunity to play a major role in influencing their child’s developing body image and self esteem. When parents and teachers focus on the child’s unique talents and attributes, coupled with unconditional love, this offers a strong foundation for a lifelong positive body image. I hear too many times how this is damaged by careless words. This has

to stop. It’s very easy for parents, teachers and elders to say, ‘ignore these bullies’. However this is easier said than done with young people who are impressionable and look up to their contemporaries.

FIND THE NOURISHING ROUTE Everyday we’re assaulted by headlines screaming new information about the best way to lose weight or how to get enviable model midriffs. It’s no wonder everyone is confused as to what regimes or rules they should follow and are becoming more dissatisfied with their own appearance. According to ABC (Anorexia and Bulimia Care) 1.6 million individuals are affected by an eating disorder in the UK. At the age of fifteen, Marissa Pendlebury was diagnosed, and hospitalised, with anorexia nervosa, depression and body dysmorphia. Marissa spent years fighting to overcome her problems with medical and psychological evaluations and ascribed meal plans. However, it wasn’t until the passing of her grandfather, her best-friend and champion for a positive mental attitude, that Marissa finally woke up to the realisation that it was up to her to change her mindset. Nourishing Routes is the result of Marissa’s deeply personal self-development and an invitation to all individuals to join her on a journey of positive transformation using compassionate living as the key. Marissa explains what it means to live more compassionately and offers lighthearted activities to help identity your own personal needs before moving on to show how we can then apply these concepts to our everyday lives. Although keen to stress that the new wave of lifestyle trends come from a positive place, she asserts that in the individual it can quickly become overwhelming. Instead Marissa hopes to inspire those to break free from negative relationships with food and encourage a positive mindset that doesn’t involve branding foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ or feeling guilty for what we do or do not eat.
