PICK YOUR OWN SUNFLOWERS AT BYRES FARM BENEFITS MFR CASH FOR KIDS

The Smith family at Byres farm, wanted to do something to make people smile during the difficult times of Covid and at the same time raise money for a great cause.

They decided to give growing Sunflowers a go.

The cheery yellow flowers always made them smile and they thought it would cheer people up seeing them growing in the fields.

They gave people the chance to come and enjoy a walk in the countryside and at the same time take some of these cheery blooms home, in return for a donation to MFR Cash For Kids 8 appeal. The money raised would then put a smile on even more faces – A double smile creator! Growing Sunflowers in the North East of Scotland was very experimental but they thrived. The biggest issue was that the deer seemed to love them too! Luckily, there were plenty to go round, to raise money for MFR Cash for kids and help out the local wildlife populations! The first weekend was a sell out event with 80 car parking slots. It was the first time doing this and without knowing how many sunflowers people would pick they did not want to sell too

many tickets and have disappointed customers. However by Sunday evening 80 carloads of customers had all gone home laden with sunflowers and they still had thousands left! The event ran for two whole weeks and three weekends with everyone enjoying the experience including the photo opportunities that had been set up, hand painted signs and a straw bale sofa. It was great seeing lots of photos which were then posted on social media. The final total raised for MFR Cash for Kids was a fantastic £3547. The event was so successful the Smith family are already thinking how they can make next year’s event bigger and better. If you missed 2020 definitely a date for your diary in 2021.
