"Who can understand the Trinity?" wrote St Augustine in the 5th century. "Rare are the persons who, when they speak of it, also know what they speak of…." Then with all due qualifications and apologies, he suggests a way that might throw a little light on it. Look at yourself, he says; you see that you exist and that you have a mind and a will. These are three dimensions of your reality, and yet you are one. You are a kind of trinity: three in one and one in three. It is only an image, yes, but it has this advantage: that it is taken from personal life, and not from mathematics. Sometimes people have seen the mystery of the Trinity as a piece of impossible mathematics in which 1 x 3 is still 1. St John, like Augustine, looked in personal life for analogies of the Trinity. He wrote, "Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love" (1 John 4:8). This is a profoundly challenging statement. If I don’t live in love I don’t know God. A little further on John wrote, "God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them" (1 John 4:16). I may be the most learned theologian in the world, I may have hundreds of ideas for the betterment of the Church and society, I may be working like a slave to implement these ideas; but if I am not living in love it is wasted effort. Let's extend the personal image a little further, to groups of persons trying to live together. There are two things, mainly, that people suffer from in families and communities of every kind. One is a feeling of suffocation, of not being allowed to be themselves, of having no identity except that of the group. The other is opposite but equally painful: a loss of identification (or only a very loose identification) with the community.

Sunday 26th May 2013 The Most Holy Trinity

Here the individuals circle around one another at a distance, like planets, and this leads to loneliness. These two are opposite poles: too much family and too little, suffocation and loneliness. Now try to think again about the Trinity. The Father is eternally the Father. He never has been and never will be the Son or the Spirit. Likewise the other Persons. Each is eternally a unique Person. There is no suffocation. And yet they are so much one that we have to say there is only one God. The doctrine of the Trinity shows us that the inner life of God is a community - the only perfect community. Such a life we all aspire to, such a life we long for in all our dreams and waking: full presence to others without being diminished or disrespected in any way, a joyful pouring out of our lives for others, such that it makes us fully who we are ourselves. Deep down, our longing for such a community is our longing for God. All our struggle to achieve peace and harmony in our families and neighbourhoods is our struggle for God, and all the pain and frustration we experience on the way is redeemed and given meaning by that transcendent Community that is God. FIRST READING A reading from the book of Proverbs 8: 22-31 The Wisdom of God cries aloud: The Lord created me when his purpose first unfolded, before the oldest of his works. From everlasting I was firmly set, from the beginning, before earth came into being. The deep was not, when I was born, there were no springs to gust with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I came to birth; before he made the earth, the countryside, or the first grains of the world s dust. When he fixed the heavens firm, I was there, when he drew a ring on the surface of the deep, when he thickened the clouds above, when he fixed fast the springs of the deep, when he assigned the sea its boundaries - and the waters will not invade the shore ‒ when he laid down the foundations of the earth, I was by his side, a master craftsman, delighting him day after day, ever at play in his presence, at play everywhere in his world, delighting to be with the sons of men. All:

The word of the Lord Thanks be to God

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

Ps 8: 4-9. R v.2

(R)

How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth!

1.

When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and the stars which you arranged, what is man that you should keep him in mind, mortal man that you care for him? (R)

2.

Yet you have made him little less than a god; with glory and honour you crowned him, gave him power over the works of your hand, put all things under his feet. (R)

3.

All of them, sheep and cattle, yes, even the savage beasts, birds of the air, and fish that make their way through the waters. (R)

SECOND READING A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Romans 5: 1-5 Through our Lord Jesus Christ, by faith we are judged righteous and at peace with God, since it is by faith and through Jesus that we have entered this state of grace in which we can boast about looking forward to God s glory. But that is not all we can boast about; we can boast about our sufferings. These sufferings bring patience, as we know, and

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. patience brings perseverance, and perseverance brings hope, and this hope is not deceptive, because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given us.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST 16:12-15

Jesus said to his disciples: I still have many things to say to you but they would be too much for you now. But when the Spirit of truth comes he will lead you to the complete truth, since he will not be speaking as from himself but will say only what he has learnt; and he will tell you of the things to come. He will glorify me since all he tells you will be taken from what is mine. Everything the Father has is mine; that is why I said: All he tells you will be taken from what is mine.

Offertory Procession The gifts of bread and wine which will become the Lord’s body and blood are brought to the altar. The celebrant raises the host on the paten saying: Priest:

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life.

All:

Blessed be God for ever. The celebrant pours wine and a little water into the chalice, saying quietly: By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. The celebrant then raises the chalice above the altar and says: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink.

HOMILY Congregation stands

THE CREED All:

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow your head up to the words ‘and became man’) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

All: Priest:

Blessed be God for ever. Bowing, the celebrant says quietly: With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God. Then the celebrant washes his hands, saying quietly: Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.

All:

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS Priest:

Sanctify by the invocation of your name, we pray, O Lord our God, this oblation of our service, and by it make of us an eternal offering to you. Through Christ our Lord.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.

All: Amen. Congregation stands

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER III Priest: All:

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

Priest: All:

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

Priest: All:

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just.

DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME. Priest:

The mystery of faith.

All:

My Lord and my God.

Priest:

Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving Passion of your Son, his wondrous Resurrection and Ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice.

PREFACE Priest:

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church and, recognizing the sacrificial Victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ.

For with your Only Begotten Son and the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord: not in the unity of a single person, but in a Trinity of one substance. For what you have revealed to us of your glory we believe equally of your Son and of the Holy Spirit, so that, in the confessing of the true and eternal Godhead, you might be adored in what is proper to each Person, their unity in substance, and their equality in majesty.

May he make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs with Saint Patrick and with all the Saints, on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help.

For this is praised by Angels and Archangels, Cherubim, too, and Seraphim, who never cease to cry out each day, as with one voice they acclaim:

May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim Church on earth, with your servant Francis our Pope and N our Bishop, the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own.

ACCLAMATION All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Congregation kneels Priest: You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly gives you praise, for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you: by the same Spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the Body and + Blood of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread, and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing,

Listen graciously to the prayers of this family, whom you have summoned before you: in your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world. To our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good. Priest:

Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is yours, for ever and ever. All: Amen Congregation stands

COMMUNION RITE Priest:

At the Saviour s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

All:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Priest:

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

All:

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever.

Priest:

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever.

All:

Amen.

Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always. All: And with your spirit. The celebrant may add these or similar words. Priest: Let us offer each other the sign of peace. All make a sign of peace, according to local custom. Priest: May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it. All:

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace. Congregation kneels The celebrant says quietly: May the receiving of your Body and Blood, Lord Jesus Christ, not bring me to judgement and condemnation, but through your loving mercy be for me protection in mind and body and a healing remedy.

INVITATION TO HOLY COMMUNION Priest:

All:

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Priest:

May the Body of Christ keep me safe for eternal life.

Priest:

May the Blood of Christ keep me safe for eternal life.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON

Gal 4:6

All:

Since you are children of God, God has sent into your hearts the Spirit of his Son, the Spirit who cries out: Abba, Father. Purifying the chalice the celebrant says quietly: What has passed our lips as food, O Lord, may we possess in purity of heart, that what has been given to us in time may be our healing for eternity.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Congregation kneels Priest: Let us pray. May receiving this Sacrament, O Lord our God, bring us health of body and soul, as we confess your eternal holy Trinity and undivided Unity. Through Christ our Lord. All: Amen.

CONCLUDING RITE Priest: All:

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

Priest:

May God, the Father of lights, who was pleased to enlighten the disciples minds by the outpouring of the Spirit, the Paraclete, grant you gladness by his blessing and make you always abound with the gifts of the same Spirit.

All:

Amen

Priest:

May the wondrous flame that appeared above the disciples, powerfully cleanse your hearts from every evil and pervade them with its purifying light.

All:

Priest:

And may God, who has been pleased to unite many tongues in the profession of one faith, give you perseverance in that same faith and, by believing, may you journey from hope to clear vision.

All:

NEWRY PARISH: Sunday 26th May 2013 A Message from the Administrator The institution of Corpus Christi is a feast in the Christian calendar resulted from approximately forty years of work of Juliana of Liège, a 13th century religious woman from an unrecognised religious order. Juliana developed a special veneration of the Blessed Sacrament, and always longed for a feast day outside of Lent in its honour. In 1264 Pope Urban IV instituted and announced that Corpus Christi was to be a feast day throughout the entire Latin rite. He directed that it be filled with joy and accompanied by hymns and a festive procession. He asked the Western Church father, St. Thomas Aquinas, to compose two offices of prayer. St. Thomas did so ‒ along with five hymns - and they have nourished the piety of Christians for centuries. Corpus Christi is principally celebrated by the Catholic Church, but it is also included in the calendar of a few Anglican churches, most notably the Church of England. I encourage all parishioners to join in the Corpus Christi procession in this Year of Faith. I ask all P4 and P7 pupils to come in their dresses/suits. The procession will begin in St. Mary s Church at 3.00pm, process via Chapel Street, Boat Street, William Street, John Mitchel Place, Hill Street, arriving in the Cathedral at 4.00pm approximately. If you are unable to walk in the procession you can come to the Cathedral where you will be able to participate in the prayers and hymns. In this celebration we proclaim our belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and affirm that the very same Jesus lives within each one of us who are baptised in His body, the Church. In fact the entire Trinity takes up residence within us. Through living our faith in the Church and participating fully in the Sacraments, we live in the Trinity. This is the mystery we call communion. Pope Francis has asked that an hour of Eucharistic Adoration take place in all Churches at 4.00pm on Sunday 2nd June to coincide with an hour of Eucharistic Adoration he will preside over in St. Peter s Basilica. At the conclusion of our procession there will be exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 5.15pm. We hope that many will remain for this hour and it will provide us with the opportunity to join with Pope Francis in the Prayer of Adoration to Jesus alive in the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar. Canon Francis Brown.
