Behind the Pages: A Personal Introduction to Bellevue Lifestyle’s New Publisher

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

Born in the PNW as the eldest of three daughters, I’m grateful to be raised by two supportive and loving parents who I look up to as role models. I graduated from the University of Washington (Go Huskies!) with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and as a proud member of Pi Beta Phi. Following in my mother’s footsteps, I became a flight attendant upon graduation, allowing me to explore new cities and immerse myself in diverse cultures. Although I have gained a love for traveling (Hawaii especially), I have found a deep appreciation for the beautiful PNW that I am lucky to call home.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY OUTSIDE OF WORK?

I’m at my happiest when I’m spending quality time with family and friends—whether it’s playing pickleball with my family, catching up over a glass of wine at a local winery or restaurant with friends, traveling to a new destination (near or far) or enjoying a relaxing boat day on Lake Washington.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED FOR IN TAKING ON THIS NEW ROLE?

I am excited for the opportunity in being part of something larger than myself and contributing positively to the community I have had the privilege to call home. For the past four years, working with Bellevue Lifestyle magazine has provided me with a profound sense of fulfillment and joy. This role has allowed me to discover a career path where my passion for community impact thrives. I strive to highlight the vibrant essence of the city and support local growth and visibility, connecting our readers and followers to the people, places and businesses that define Bellevue, WA.

THE HEART OF THE HOME

Ideas to transform your kitchen into a functional and stylish space.

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, a space where family and friends gather, share meals, and create memories. More than just a place for cooking, it’s a hub of activity, connection, and warmth. From morning coffee rituals to holiday feasts, the kitchen hosts moments of togetherness and tradition. Its design reflects the home’s personality, with features that foster both functionality and comfort.

Deciding to renovate your kitchen is a large undertaking and requires intentional planning and attention to detail.  Bellevue Lifestyle asked local homebuilder, MN Custom Homes, to share how they approach kitchen design and what trends to pay attention to this year.  MN Custom Homes is known for developing extraordinary properties on the Eastside, and they are a leader in innovation, overall design, and functionality.

WHAT IS MN’S APPROACH WHEN DESIGNING A KITCHEN?

When designing the kitchen, we incorporate the timeless approach of both form and function, making sure to optimize the flow within the space to create a serene, streamlined environment that is both visually appealing and highly functional for everyday use. Our kitchens are often integrated with living and dining areas, promoting a seamless flow between spaces. This open concept design encourages interaction and makes the kitchen a central gathering point in the home. Our Interior Designers use consistent materials, colors, and design elements to ensure the kitchen complements adjacent spaces, creating a cohesive look.

WHAT ARE POPULAR TRENDS RIGHT NOW WITH KITCHEN DESIGN?

Current kitchen design trends reflect a blend of modern technology, sustainability, and a return to warmth and natural materials. Some popular trends include embracing earthy tones such as terracotta, sage green, deep blues, and warm browns. These colors bring a sense of calm and connection to nature. Replacing upper cabinets with open shelving is gaining popularity. This trend allows homeowners to display beautiful dishware, plants, or decorative items, creating a more personalized and airy kitchen space. Energy-efficient appliances and water-saving fixtures are a must-have in modern kitchens, aligning with the growing emphasis on sustainability, along with smart appliances, such as touchless faucets, smart ovens, and refrigerators that can help with meal planning and grocery shopping. Another noteworthy trend is the revival of the pantry or larder, especially walk-in styles. These spaces are often designed with custom shelving and storage solutions to maximize functionality and organization.

This thoughtfully positioned butler’s pantry, complete with a wine fridge, is strategically placed between the kitchen and dining room.
The display cabinets in both this kitchen not only provide ample storage, but also create a stunning showcase for dishes and glassware.

This kitchen is designed with double ovens to accommodate two chefs simultaneously. The kitchen's wine fridge enhances convenience.

“CURRENT KITCHEN DESIGN TRENDS REFLECT A BLEND OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY, SUSTAINABILITY, AND A RETURN TO WARMTH AND NATURAL MATERIALS.”

BY LIFE N LIGHT AND MARIE YOSHIMIZU

CRAFTING Liquid ART

FROM PANDEMIC HOBBYIST TO LEAD

MIXOLOGIST: MARIE YOSHIMIZU

SHARES HER JOURNEY THROUGH COCKTAILS AND SCIENCE

Marie Yoshimizu (@mixwithmarie), a rocket scientist by day and a renowned lead mixologist by evening, is truly a woman of many talents. This month, Bellevue Lifestyle had the pleasure of catching up with her to explore how she turned a pandemic hobby into a flourishing second career.

Marie’s journey into mixology was sparked during the global pandemic when bars and restaurants were closed, giving her time spent at home perfecting her cocktail-making skills, which soon blossomed into a deep passion. Her experiences at cocktail competitions, where she met talented professional bartenders, ultimately inspired her to transition into the hospitality industry and pursue mixology as a second career.

Beginning as a home bartender, she transitioned to mobile bartending with Party On The Rocks after moving to Washington. She then worked as a seasonal bartender at Overlake Golf & Country Club, before becoming the Lead Mixologist at Ce La Vi in the new InterContinental Hotel in Bellevue.

Marie tells Bellevue Lifestyle, “My cocktails often reflect scientific inspiration and my Japanese heritage, blending unique cultural flavors. I also prioritize seasonality and sustainability to ensure a thoughtful and cohesive menu.”, when asked about her inspiration in the creative process of developing a new cocktail or menu.

Her preferred drink to craft? Sours - they are simple, well-balanced and enjoyable for everyone!

Follow her on Instagram and Facebook, @mixwithmarie, or stop by Ce La Vi to try her special cocktail, “Koku & Umami” made with the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami (Pictured adjacent).

“BALANCING MY ROLE AS A LEAD Mixologist WITH MY CAREER AS A Rocket Scientist , I DRAW INSPIRATION FROM BOTH SCIENCE AND MY Japanese heritage . I LOVE EXPERIMENTING WITH unique cultural flavors AND FOCUSING ON seasonality AND sustainability TO CRAFT THOUGHTFUL AND COHESIVE MENUS.”

Bellevue DIN TAI FUNG

A Harmonious Blend of Cultural Heritage and Pacific Northwest Elegance

Din Tai Fung’s Bellevue restaurant, designed by the Rockwell Group, beautifully merges the cultural heritage of the restaurant with the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Inspired by the region’s landscape, the design features elements like washi paper chandeliers and a rock garden, creating a sophisticated and culturally rich atmosphere.

The restaurant reflects Din Tai Fung’s mission to provide exceptional dining experiences through outstanding food and warm hospitality.

This Bellevue location embodies that mission by blending a welcoming, regionally inspired environment with the restaurant’s renowned service and culinary excellence.

A unique design element is the suspended tree installation in the main dining area, which features cascading leaves mimicking the topography of Bellevue and Lake Washington. This installation not only enhances the aesthetic appeal, but also connects guests to the local landscape.

The design enhances the dining experience by offering a warm, inviting atmosphere that complements the high-quality food and service Din Tai Fung is known for. Guests can expect to enjoy the restaurant’s signature dishes, like the meticulously crafted Xiao Long Bao, in a setting that reflects the natural elegance of the Pacific Northwest.

Overall, the Bellevue location provides an elevated Din Tai Fung experience, immersing guests in both the local environment and the restaurant’s cultural heritage. Book your next reservation at dintaifungusa.com.

It’s Pumpkin Bread Season

The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort

Ingredients:

• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

• 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon nutmeg

• 1/2 teaspoon ginger

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin

• 1 1/2 cups sugar

• 2 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil

• 1/2 cup melted butter

• 2 eggs

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside.

3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup.

4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined.

5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy.

6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended.

7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal.

8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.
