A happy February filled with love!
FEBRUARY 2017 PUBLISHER
Lucy Jones | Lucy.Jones@LifestylePubs.com
O
ur February issue proclaims 'Love Is In The Air'! Coming off the fullness of the holidays, many of us are still cozy and filled with love from family and friends. If you were like me, you experienced the incredible richness of having your children gathered around - laughing, talking, playing games and delighting in being together again. Love is gratifying, vulnerable and so compelling, that we have a holiday in its honor!
The Greeks had it figured out a few thousand years ago by having four different words for our one word “love”...

ur beautiful city is blessed with nature’s art in many ways. When I take a walk on the beach as the sun is setting, I am always struck by the beauty of where we live! But as an art lover and collector, one of the things I really enjoy

The city-owned Walter D. Cannon Art Gallery at the Dove Library complex is a real gem, offering five diverse art exhibitions annually. This is art simply for the joy of experiencing, not for purchase. Some exhibits, like the Juried Biennial and shows featuring works by city employees and their families, are particularly popular. When I can, I enjoy attending Opening Night with a courtyard reception. Each exhibition also features an Open Studio on Saturday after the show opens with hands-on activities for parents and kids, all free! If you’re in the mood to browse though, and perhaps acquire something that pleases you, there are a number of fine galleries to satisfy your artistic palette. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and there are many I have yet to discover! In the Village, visit Snyder Art, Viz Art Ink Gallery, the Front Porch Gallery, The Foundry (part of the New Village Arts Theater), the Carlsbad Art and Antiques Mall, and the Carlsbad-Oceanside Art League at the Village Faire. Creative Element on State Street offers a wide range of paintings, accessories, and wearable art from local and international artists, designers, and Fair Trade artisans…a truly unique art gallery! And don’t miss the Seacoast Gallery, with paintings, photographs and glass creations, across from the Premium Outlets Mall. Public art abounds in and around the Village. You’ve no doubt noticed some of our wall murals – my personal favorite is of three colorful tigers, by artist Michael Summers and sponsored by the New Village Arts Organization, on the north wall of the Witch Creek Winery at the corner of Grand and Carlsbad Boulevard. Another favorite is on the wall by the Choice Juicery on State Street. And the personal family mural on the wall of Lola’s 7 Up Market and Deli in the Barrio is a gem – check it out, and of course Lola’s, too, if you haven’t already. A walk around town will surely reveal wall art you’ve totally missed! Our public art also includes a wide range of sculptures - the helix at the Rotary at State Street and Coast Road, the Sculpture Garden with its changing exhibits, the Georgina Cole City Library, and the Fire Safety Training Center, with more works coming to several of our public parks. There are also the colorfully painted The Solo Session & Sky. Jackson Finn, Seacoast Gallery
fire hydrants and utility boxes in the Village! A favorite piece of public art is the Carlsbad Art Wall, brainchild of local artist Bryan Snyder in cooperation with the owner of the popular
Sculpture at the Safety Training Center.
Senor Grubby’s on Carlsbad Village Drive. What’s very cool is the art on the wall keeps changing, with a new artist every few months; murals are announced in advance so you can watch the artists in person as they create their public artwork. By the way, did you know there’s an interactive map on the City of Carlsbad website depicting many public works owned by the city? Find out where they are and learn more about them, it might inspire you to take a tour! CarlsbadCA.gov

Tax Tips at Your Fingertips ARTICLE MARGI BLASH | PHOTOGRAPHY ERIC LARSON
“I
just LOVE tax season,” said no one ever! We know…so we’re here to help make it a little easier on you this year. Kurt Filipovitch and the experts from Filipovitch and Co., a local accounting company that has done business in the city for over 35 years, share their tips to make tax season easier on everyone. START NOW
Stop procrastinating. Schedule an appointment even if you don’t have all your paperwork together. All information reported by third parties such as W-2s, 1099 INT/DIV, 1099 MISC will come in the mail by late January. And if you are expecting a refund, why wait? GET ORGANIZED
The days of delivering a ‘shoebox’ full of receipts to your accountant are long gone. The primary reason is that there are so many more efficient alternatives. If you still prefer hard copy record keeping, try using color-coded folders to stay organized. Want to go electronic? Check out simple computer programs like Microsoft Excel or Intuit QuickBooks. Prefer mobile apps? FreshBooks or Mile IQ can help keep records. No matter which method you choose, be detailed! Keep copies of invoices/receipts, but also make notes on them regarding the purpose of the expense and any particulars that may help prove the deduction. GATHER DOCUMENTS
Bring copies of living wills, power of attorney, healthcare proxies, Social Security card, list of investment, retirement and bank accounts when visiting your accountant. Store these documents in a portable fireproof box in case of emergency and consider keeping a copy off-site, with your attorney or accountant. 28
Carlsbad Lifestyle | February 2017
FORGOTTEN WRITE-OFFS BUSINESS DEDUCTIONS:
• Home Office Deduction – A business deduction is available to taxpayers who use an area of their home exclusively, and on a regular basis, either as their principal place of business or to meet with patients or customers. A qualifying taxpayer can choose to deduct a prorated portion of the actual total cost of maintaining their home. Alternatively, a simplified method is available based on a flat $5 per square foot of home used for business (maximum 300 square feet). • Compensate Children for Working – A business owner with children that provide services to their business can consider paying them a reasonable wage. This can teach children the value of work ethic, and will usually reduce the overall family tax burden by taking advantage of the children’s lower tax rates. PERSONAL DEDUCTIONS:
• Automobile Mileage – Most taxpayers think of writing off automobile expenses for their business. The IRS also allows a mileage deduction for certain personal trips. Eligible taxpayers can deduct 19 cents per mile for medical or moving, and 14 cents per mile for charitable purposes. Be sure to keep a mileage log to substantiate the deduction! • Tax Preparation Fees – Accounting and tax preparation fees are generally deductible on Schedule A, but only if the taxpayer itemizes their deductions, and only to the extent they exceed 2 percent of the taxpayers income. Alternatively, consider allocating a reasonable amount of the deduction to other schedules that might not be limited – Schedule E for rental activities, Schedule C for business, Schedule F for farming activities.

SculpSure is a breakthrough light-based body contouring treatment designed to reduce stubborn fat in problem areas such as the abdomen and love handles, without surgery
NO SURGERY. NO DOWNTIME. JUST RESULTS. DEADLINE EXTENSION
For all you procrastinators – rejoice, because you actually have until April 18th this year to file taxes. The regular deadline of April 15th falls on a Saturday, and Washington DC will observe Emancipation Day on Monday the 17th. Then again, why wait! Meet with your accountant now so you don’t have to stress with any last minute issues, plus your tax return deserves your time and attention. If you don’t want to give the government your money before the official deadline, don’t worry. You can finish your return now and schedule it to head out electronically on the 18th. But if there is absolutely no way you’ll file taxes before the April deadline, take advantage of an extension. It merely extends the time for filing and is not an extension of time for paying any balance due that is reported on the return when filed. The balance due will be subject to penalties (1/2 percent/month) and interest (4 percent/ year) from April 15th until the time of payment of the tax. FlipCPA.com
