Here's To Health!
W
ith the New Year now upon us, it seems like we have instantly gone from the carefree indulgences of the December holidays to the urgency of having to set resolutions, most of which center on leading a healthier lifestyle. But what really defines health? When prompted with the phrase “Health Is…” one could indeed come up with a vast array of answers to fit the bill. Health is eating your veggies with dinner, drinking more water, cutting down on alcohol, exercising regularly, seeing the doctor for a check-up, and the list goes on. With everything out there about how to live a healthier lifestyle, it almost seems impossible to get to an ideal state of health. Tired of trying to fit the mold of what was considered the standard definition of health, I decided to explore what being healthy really means to me, which took me back on a journey to my high school days running cross country and track. I know it sounds cliché, but I really was in the best shape of my life during that time, both mentally and physically. There was just something so calming and serene about getting out there in nature (if you can consider the desert nature) with just the sound of dirt crunching under my feet and my heartbeat pounding in my ears—time seemed to stand still and the whole world became a blur as I got lost in my thoughts. The feeling after was even better, when I would be so exhausted that my legs felt like lead and sweat streaming down from my forehead dripped into my eyes. Yet, I also felt a great sense of accomplishment; that I had pushed my body and that I knew I could do it again tomorrow. For me, that feeling is the ultimate definition of health. However, as we are not all the same, I invite you to find your own definition of health this month, with a little guidance from some of the stories featured in this issue, such as wellness guides and step-by-step yoga poses from Ocotillo Village Health Club & Spa, advice from the experts at Cielo Aesthetics & Wellness and a serene Sedona spa.

HAND AND STONE SPA Another local business geared toward relaxation and wellness also opened in May of last year— Hand and Stone Spa of Chandler, owned by Carrie Dawson and her husband Mark. Mark’s son Matt, helps Carrie with the day-to-day management. “The purpose of our entire business is relaxation, rejuvenation and personal wellness,” Carrie says. “Our signature service is the Hot Stone Massage, where our licensed therapists use warm riverbed stones as an extension of their hands to provide warmth and just the right amount of pressure and movement to the muscles during the massage, allowing for deeper impact and relaxation.” The Hot Stone Massage also offers service enhancements to provide relaxation as well as recovery. “If you have headaches, TMJ, sinus congestion or migraines, we have services to add to your massage or facial to help with that,” Carrie says, adding that their Peppermint Scalp Massage “does wonders” to relieve tension headaches and exhaustion. “Our Cold Stone Face Massage melts away the pain from migraines or TMJ. And everyone knows lavender aromatherapy promotes a deep relaxation, but did you know that eucalyptus can relieve congestion that comes with winter colds and allergies?” To help address the impact of dry, cool winter weather, Hand and Stone Massage’s team of licensed estheticians provide customized facials. “We offer Rejuvenating, Collagen and Detox Facials that remove dull, dead skin, infuse just the right amount of moisture and provide a beautiful glow for special occasions or for every day,” she says. Hand and Stone Spa is located at 2925 S. Alma School Drive, Suite 6, Chandler. For more information, call 480.665.5600 or visit HandAndStone.com. January 2017 | Chandler Lifestyle

Paschich explains that it involved some market research, but also knowing that both families wanted to live in Chandler. “My kids love it here [in Chandler],” says Dodd. “The reception to the new business has been unbelievable.” Because most people in the area may not have heard of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, both Dodd and Paschich welcome guests to stop by to ask questions, or for impromptu tours. Way more than movie munchies, the people behind the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema hope that it not only becomes known locally for its unique theater experience, but for its delicious cuisine as well. With several years of culinary experience under his belt, Chef Nate Collins is in charge of the theater’s fare. “Guests can expect to get quality and consistent food that appeals to a variety of palates,” he explains. “… [Personally,] I really enjoy our black bean dip, our brie and onion burger, and I can never turn down a slice of fresh-made pizza and some crispy wings.” Collins adds that guests should check out the theater’s upcoming feast events too. “I invite everyone to come enjoy one of our feasts,” he says. “Our feasts consist of food, beer or wine, paired with a specific movie. These events allow us to not only display the culinary talents we have, but it also allows us to distance ourselves from the competition using food and film to guide us as we provide great experiences.” To learn more about Chandler’s new Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (located on the corner of Arizona Ave. and Chandler Heights), visit Drafthouse.com. Salt & Serenity SEDONA HEALTH SPA OFFERS INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO LONG-TERM WELLNESS ARTICLE DANIELLE ACCOVELLI | PHOTOGRAPHY MANDY HANK
W
hile traveling up the winding highway leading to Sedona one will inevitably pass the small, quaint Village of Oak Creek. Here, popping out of the picturesque red rocks, lies a brightly-colored shopping center with storefronts in vivid hues of natural green, tan, red and orange housing a mix of eclectic, locally owned stores and restaurants. The Collective Sedona, as it’s aptly named, is the brainchild of Thomas McPherson, who envisioned a connective, community-like experience where both visitors and locals alike can come together to take in Sedona’s boundless beauty. One of The Collective Sedona’s newest additions, the Sedona Health Spa, has taken McPherson’s vision for the complex to the next level. The quaint spa boasts a friendly, knowledgeable staff and features transformative mind, body and spirit wellness programs that channel the healing power of the red rocks. “My vision for the spa is really looking into long-term, big picture wellness and how we can provide services that do that,” says General Manager Shawn Healy. “We want to help people with the things their bodies need help with so that they can feel good in their daily lives. To give them something they can take home with them and share with the people they come across.” 30

Along with being dedicated to providing big picture wellness, the Sedona Health Spa is unique in another aspect too; it houses one of the only salt rooms in Northern Arizona. The concept of salt therapy is a fairly new one, yet over the years has proven to work wonders for a wide variety of ailments, including everything from respiratory illness to skin issues to mood. The practice originated in the salt caves of Wieliczka, Poland after miners working in there began to experience fewer respiratory illnesses than those working at other sites. “What they found was that these salts, particularly Himalayan Sea Salt and other mineral-based salts, worked with the minerals in our bodies to contribute to overall improved health,” says Healy. And all it takes is one 45-minute salt therapy session to start feeling the benefits. Begin the treatment by stepping inside the salt room—a serene space with walls covered in shimmering pieces of light pink Himalayan sea salt and sunlight streaming in through a large window. Then, simply sit down, relax and let the salt work its healing magic. “While you sit, our Halo Generator blows out these microscopic salt particles that you breathe in,” says Healy. “The idea is that these charged particles connect with your body to elevate mood and help with other health issues.”
Aside from salt therapy, the Sedona Health Spa offers a bevy of other treatments as well. These include massage therapy, Ayurvedic medicine and yoga, acupuncture and meditation classes, among others. All strive to incorporate the natural beauty and serenity of Sedona into their programs. “It’s hard not to be induced into this state of mediation while you are here because it’s just so beautiful and stimulating,” says Healy. “And that’s what we want; to have people come in and just have that feeling of being settled and for all that visual input to be seamless.” Yet for Healy, it really all comes down to fostering long-term, life-changing wellness. “We want them to be their best selves, and half of that is physical and half of that is mental. So we try to provide services that interconnect to do that,” he says. “At the end of the day you have one life to live and we want to help people live their best.” Now that is true healing. The Collective Sedona is located at 7000 AZ-179, Sedona, AZ 86351. For more information, please visit SedonaHealthSpa.com or TheCollectiveSedona.com. CONTINUED >

owntown Chandler is going Hollywood! The Chandler International Film Festival, January 13th-15th, is an innovative celebration of cinema featuring screenings of more than 100 award-winning movies submitted by up-and-coming filmmakers. "We are bringing in an eclectic mix of people from all over the world to Chandler to celebrate the magic of cinema and showcase our beautiful city", said CIFF Creator and Director, Mitesh Patel, who hand-picked Chandler over several other cities vying to host the festival. "Chandler is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, but remains a tight-knit community. Everyone has been very supportive, from the city to the business leaders and general public. We are looking forward to being here for a very long time." Throughout the year, the 100 plus films selected for the festival have been submitted, screened and selected for awards such as “Best Picture of the Month” and winners are announced on the CIFF website. All monthly "Best Picture" winners are screened at this annual event to compete for “Best of the Best Picture”, a trophy and a distribution offer. "We want to encourage emerging movie makers to continue creating by appreciating their work and giving them the recognition they deserve", said Patel, himself a film Producer and Director. "We perform a comprehensive evaluation process and select the highest quality films. Only the best ones make it into the festival." The CIFF will kick off Friday, January 13 at 5:30 with a "CHANDLERWOOD" Red Carpet Gala, where guests will dress in formal attire and join filmmakers, actors, actresses, business leaders and city officials to walk the red carpet on their way into a welcoming cocktail party complete with hors d'oeuvres and music.
Chandler Lifestyle | January 2017
At 7pm the opening ceremony will begin with a sit down dinner, a special message from Mayor Jay Tibshraeny and a ribbon cutting with the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. Jim Grieshaber of JAMM7 and iHeart Radio will be the emcee. The festival also includes industry workshops and after-parties all weekend and a dinner with movie screening Saturday night. The special Awards Ceremony will be held on Sunday evening where the "Viewers Choice" award will be announced, voted on by movie-goers throughout the weekend. "All of us at JAMM7 are honored to be a part of bringing the CIFF to our incredible city", Grieshaber said, “It's been an absolute blast working with Mitesh and his team.” JAMM7 Co-Founder Melissa Anaya adds, “Get ready for an amazing weekend of food, fun, music and great movies!" "This is a very important event for us as a city with a deep commitment to the arts", added Terri Kimble, President and CEO of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. A portion of the proceeds will go to Valley Youth Theatre, a professional-quality theatre company dedicated to helping young people achieve their full potential through meaningful engagement, education, and excellence in the performing arts. All events will be held downtown at SoHo 63. Tickets are on sale now at ChandlerFilmFestival.com, with single admission prices starting at just $12. The GOLD PASS ($125) allows unlimited admission all weekend. VIP options are also available. Chandler-based JAMM7 is the official Marketing and Event Management company of the festival. r. William Howe graduated medical school before entering the Navy in 1958. He performed his first tracheotomy on a train with
a kitchen knife and a pen, saving the life of a high-ranking officer. After completing his service, Howe returned to his hometown and practiced general medicine and obstetrics for 39 years. During his first 10 years, he helped bring more than 3,500 babies into the world. Today, Howe is 86-years-old and lives at Chandler Memory Care

first to work on the social model, verses the medical model, geared
ing progressive memory loss or dementia. “What I love about our program is the individual cognitive placement, where the residents can be engaged with other people with the same cognition level,” says Gretchen Wentz, executive director of Chandler Memory Care. Wentz started out in the industry 20 years ago, and was one of the toward bringing likeminded people together. CAREGIVERS
The caregivers at the community are certified through the State of Arizona and provide around- the-clock care. They help with daily living activities such as bathing, grooming and toileting, as well as at meal time and with laundry. They may assist with something complicated like a transfer from a chair to a bed, or something as simple as reading a book. “They were people before they got this disease,” says Wentz. “They were talented, and we have to remember who they were before this.” One resident worked for NASA and helped get the first person on the moon. He’s fond of books about space. Oftentimes someone with memory loss will remember parts of their life from years past, but not remember what they did minutes ago. “We will go back to what makes them tick,” says Wentz. While their caregivers are all certified professionals, family and friends also play an important role in the residents’ lives. Chandler Memory Care recently hosted a Thanksgiving celebration the week before the holiday so family could enjoy it without the guilt that comes along with not being able to be at home together. While there are only 55 residents, 110 families gathered to spend the day together. “We welcome families and would like them to come in and have parties, sing songs and spend time together,” says Wentz. “Chandler Memory Care is really home for the residents, their families, the staff – we are one big happy family.” MEMORIES
Dementia doesn’t diminish one’s accomplishments and accolades. It doesn’t take away the medal Howe earned for saving that officer’s life or the “Heart of Gold” the hospital staff presented to him upon his retirement for his compassionate care of patients and their families. What it does do, however, is rob people of their memories. It’s our job as family and friends to be patient and spend time listening to the stories they do remember, to give a gentle nudge to help them remember the things they love and to help keep the forgotten memories alive through joint experiences. 42
