F
ebruary…the month for Valentines and love— and not just the romantic (seemingly ubiquitous when you’re solo) type. So before writing off this love fest of a month as a sweethearts-only celebration, remember that “Love is a many-splendored thing,” meaning it comes in myriad forms.

Love of family, friends, community, art, music, food and even life itself give us so many reasons to rejoice, regardless of having a significant other. Core to love’s many faces are the passion and care inherent in this heartfelt emotion. Caring so passionately about something or someone can inspire expressions of love that reverberate immeasurable benefits to so many. So this month we celebrate lovers of all types: lovers of community, like the Eagle Scouts dedicating hundreds of hours to making a lasting contribution to benefit others; lovers of art, such as the Ventura County Arts Council, working to support area art and education programs; lovers of food—both discerning patrons and skilled chefs who serve up sumptuous feasts to satisfy body and soul; lovers of music, including the thousands of students and devoted teachers involved in local high school choirs and bands and the talented musicians who entertain and enrich our lives with their uplifting songs and sounds; and yes, lovers of romance too! We hope you’ll agree there’s a lot to love about this season of the heart. Consider the many ways you can show your love this month. Whether with a loving partner, family member, cherished friend, beloved pet or on your own, the important thing is to get out there, spread some joy around and love your life! With Love,

ABOUT New Zealand Cuisine
Back in New Zealand, whether surrounded by the backdrop of the Auckland harbour or the rolling hills of green grass and the smell of feijoa trees, locals are accustomed to fresh and organic meals at home and at the local restaurants. In one of Auckland City’s top restaurants, dining out is not just another outing but a one-of-a-kind experience complete with top quality ingredients, beautifully plated dishes, and most importantly, an environment designed for the laid back Kiwi lifestyle. Many restaurants flaunt their trustworthy kitchens with open passes, allowing the customers to view the chefs from their seats. While a typical United States kitchen relies on pepper and strong seasonings, the Kiwi chef creatively designs dishes to showcase the best combination of flavors, without masking the natural flavors of the food. Aroha, New Zealand Cuisine was founded in 2014 by Award Winning Kiwi Chef Gwithyen Thomas (at age 26) and his wife, Justine (at age 23). Meaning love and compassion in Maori, Aroha is dedicated in loving memory to Gwithyen’s mother, Athena, and Justine’s grandfather, Harold.
Quality Matters
Chef Thomas has created a menu designed to represent the mouthwatering flavors of New Zealand with only the highest quality ingredients. Our menu features hand-grown and predominantly organic produce (our passion fruit and feijoa are grown on our back patio!), free-range and grass-fed organic meats primarily from New Zealand, and fresh New Zealand seafood that’s flown in less than 48 hours out of the water. Dishes are seasoned with native New Zealand plants including horopito and kawakawa. Chef Thomas and his team take pride in creating house-made dishes. Ice creams, ricotta cheese, chutneys, cured and smoked meats and seafood, are all made in house.

T
he In Touch Massage & Day Spa at The Bay Club in Thousand Oaks is considered unique for its experienced therapists and technicians who provide a range of services, from the classic European facial to a 60-minute signature massage. “One of the key things that make us stand apart is that we make a conscious effort to recruit highly experienced therapists and technicians who have years of background,” says Asia Powell, the spa’s owner and manager. “That helps us build the kind of relationships we want with clients,” Powell says. “We want it to be more than just a one-time visit. Especially being here at The Bay Club, where people are working to improve themselves, we just consider ourselves a partner in that effort.” The In Touch Massage & Day Spa is located inside The Bay Club, where nonmembers are welcome to use club amenities, including a steam room and sauna, indoor heated pool, fitness classes and locker rooms, on the day of their appointment. “We welcome and appreciate clients who are not members of The Bay Club—they are free to use any of the facilities here,” Powell says. “They can take a class, swim in the pool and enjoy lunch at our Pure Energy Café.”

M(AHHH!)SSAGE
The massage menu features a range of offerings, including couples massage, hot stone massage, prenatal massage and foot reflexology. Guests can also add enhancements to any massage, such as aromatherapy.

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | February 2017
“Our most popular massage service is our 60-minute therapeutic massage,” Powell says. “It’s so popular because our therapist customizes the massage so a client doesn’t have to make a choice between deep tissue or Swedish or any other modality,” she explains. “The therapist consults with them and gives them a massage that brings all the techniques that are needed to meet the needs of that client on that particular day.” FACIALS
When it comes to skincare, the spa offers its signature In Touch Facial, customized for each client using the Dermalogica product line. Additional skincare services include the Eminence Facial, using certified organic products; the Clear Skin Facial, entailing deep pore cleansing and acne clearing; and the Microcurrent Facial, utilizing a low-level current that enables facial contouring, toning and firming of aging skin. Microdermabrasion and glycolic and enzyme peels are also available. “Our 60-minute facial is the most popular skincare service,” Powell says. “It’s similar to the standard European facial, however, we also consult with the client to provide a customized experience so no one facial is the same.” An exciting new service is the Oxygen Infusion Facial. “This is a great service that a lot of folks call the ‘Red Carpet Facial,’” Powell says. “It uses oxygen to help the serums penetrate into the skin and it leaves the skin glowing, improves the appearances of wrinkles and helps with skin toning. And it’s something we’re really proud of because we’re
able to offer that to clients at a rate you can’t find anywhere else.” CUPPING
Cupping therapy is another of the spa’s latest offerings. “Cupping is an ancient Asian therapy that’s sort of an offshoot of massage—it uses suction to invigorate the muscles,” Powell explains. “We consider it to be a supplement to massage, and some people call it a form of deep tissue massage. It’s known to improve the immune system, and it’s been said that it improves cellulite.” VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIALS
In celebration of Valentine’s Day, special gift promotions include the “Insparation” package for $89, which includes a 60-minute massage and lunch at the Pure Energy Café; and the “Spaliday” package for $185, complete with a 60-minute massage, In Touch Facial and Salt Glow. A portion of every gift package sold will benefit the Assistance League of Conejo Valley, a nonprofit that assists families, seniors and children in the Conejo Valley through philanthropic programs. Says longtime client Geraldine Otero, “I like the personalized feel of the spa. The therapists are friendly and very knowledgeable. I also like the access that I have to the Bay Club facilities,” she adds. “I can take a class, then shower and have a massage,” agrees four-year spa patron Jacqui Whitney. “It’s a perfect combination.”

ward-winning art education programs, an official Poet Laureate and a gallery viewed by thousands of people a month—the arts are thriving in Ventura County, thanks to the Ventura County Arts Council! Marking its 20th anniversary this year, the VCAC is committed to enriching cultural life in Ventura County and increasing public awareness of its work. As the official arts council for Ventura County, the VCAC supports and strengthens the arts simultaneously within area schools and the local community. “Arts education is a primary part of our mission because it is critical to our schools and the well-being of our community,” says VCAC Development Director Craig Rosen. “The VCAC offers outstanding programs that integrate arts into local schools. One of the most successful is the Artists in the Classroom teaching residency program, the only multidisciplinary arts residency program available to every K-8 school in the county. AIC offers eight-week residencies in dance, music, poetry, visual and performing arts.” Says Rosen, “VCAC took over administering the Ventura County Office of Education’s teaching artist residency in 2014 and facilitated a 40% increase. That year saw the hiring of 16 artists and 11 schools in eight districts for 112 residencies, reaching over 3,300 students. And 2015 saw a 20% increase in residencies from the previous year.” “The success over the past two years is very exciting,” says Rosen. “It’s definitely a program that is very active and we’re trying to grow.” ARTS & JUVENILE JUSTICE

detention center. This powerful effort has received grants for the past two years from JUMP StArts, a grant program from the California Arts Council, and “is one out of four programs in the state to be recognized as a model program working with arts and the juvenile justice system,” Rosen says. POETRY
Additionally, the Arts Council offers Poetry Out Loud, a national poetry recitation contest for area high school students, which features county, state and national competitions. Administered locally by the VCAC, the goal is to “advance spoken poetry through oral interpretations of published poems.” Rosen notes, “The VCAC program has been recognized by the California Arts Council for having one of the more robust POL programs in the state.” The VCAC also actively promotes literary arts in the community through its Poet Laureate program, established in 2014. The current honoree, Phil Taggart, is an award-winning poet who serves “as an ambassador engaging the public,” fostering “a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry.” GRANTS
Artists In The Classroom Project
Artists In The Classroom Project
Through its Elementary School Mini Grants program, the VCAC also supports elementary schools “in partnership with local artists and arts organizations to bring standards-based arts education into classrooms.” Past projects have included a class trip to see a fully staged “Nutcracker” ballet and visits to classrooms by the regional New West Symphony’s Music Van. Rosen encourages schools to apply for mini grants by submitting a proposal through the VCAC website. THE ATRIUM GALLERY
Another VCAC community gem is the Atrium Gallery, one of the largest art galleries in the county. Spanning three floors in the Hall of Administration at the Ventura County Government Center complex, the gallery is viewed by 3,000 visitors and employees each weekday and highlights artwork from local artists. Both competitive and curated shows are hosted throughout the year and may include photographs, oil paintings, stone sculpture, watercolors and fabric arts. The VCAC board and staff, helmed by Executive Director Margaret Travers, is passionate about expanding their efforts to enhance cultural life in and around Ventura County and is actively looking for those interested in fundraising, donating or serving as a board member. Artist educators are encouraged to apply for teaching opportunities via the VCAC website. “If you pursue, participate in or appreciate the arts, the Ventura County Arts Council wants to hear from you,” urges Rosen. “We are open to collaboration and ideas that further our mission.”

ne of the most common, chronic health conditions in North America involves vein problems. In fact, more people lose time off from work due to vein disorders than from artery disease. By age 50, as many as 50% of women and 20% of men suffer significant leg vein problems. An estimated more than 80 million Americans currently suffer from some form of venous disease that can affect the flow of blood in the body, causing conditions with varying degrees of severity. Collectively called Chronic Venous Disorders, symptoms often include swelling (edema), heaviness in the legs, pain or cramps in the calves, skin discolorations, skin problems (dermatitis), dry or weeping eczema, visible varicose or “spider” veins and venous leg ulcers, which are the most serious. Your arteries carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body and the veins send the blood to the heart through tiny valves

that prevent the blood from flowing backward. When the valves don’t work properly, a condition known as venous insufficiency occurs, which can cause the blood to pool in the veins of the leg. Most often, this condition is attributed to blood clots and varicose veins, which impair blood circulation. Any feeling of leg discomfort can be a sign of an underlying problem involving the veins and should be checked out by a phlebologist; left untreated, these conditions can escalate and become more serious. usic programs benefit participants as well as the community audiences who turn out to enjoy the various performances offered by area schools. Conejo Valley high schools, including Newbury Park High School, Oaks Christian School, Thousand Oaks High School and Westlake High School, offer a wide array of high-quality music programs with several performances throughout the year.
At Newbury Park High School, Director John Sargent heads the choral program, featuring five primary performance ensembles: Concert Choir, Panther Chamber Singers, Women’s Ensemble, Men’s Chorus and Advanced Women’s Ensemble. Dedicated to the success and growth of the students, “Sarge” oversees some 100+ participants, scheduling performances throughout the year at community and special events, including an annual trip to compete with choirs throughout the state and country. This year’s trip to Nashville, Tennessee, will provide students with a firsthand look at Nashville’s rich musical heritage. “John Sargent is one of the biggest inspirations in my life,” says Advanced Women’s Ensemble member Madeline (Red) Weiss. “He teaches us about the goal and focus being to inspire an audience.” Newbury Park High School students who enjoy band and expressing themselves through instrumental music can participate in Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Marching Band, led by Director Dennis Crystal. The Honors-level Wind Ensemble requires auditions and the highly competitive Marching Band provides a wonderful way to develop musicianship. The Jazz Band comprises big band instruments, including saxophones, trombones, trumpets, pianos, guitars and drums. The Newbury Park High School Orchestra program offers classes for beginning to honors-level musicians. The String Orchestra has consistently earned Superior ratings at the Southern California Band and Orchestra Festival and will be performing at California's very own Segerstorm Concert Hall in March 2017 as part of the prestigious Heritage Festival of Gold. Directing the High School Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band and Drum Line, Director Ryan Kelly utilizes his extensive experience, passion and love for music to inspire students to learn their craft and play music as best as they possibly can. The Oaks Christian Orchestra, directed by Mary Kay Altizer, features an array of strings, including violin, viola, cello and bass. Performing throughout the school year, the orchestra covers styles from Baroque, classical and contemporary to rock, jazz and alternative music. A Guitar program taught by Joe Diblasi offers three levels of instruction, ranging from beginning to advanced levels in classical, flamenco, rock, jazz, country and pop. Diblasi uses his experience working as a studio guitar player to educate students about the technical aspects and provide insight and education into the music business. “Ability is what you are capable of doing. A ARTICLE LORI LUCK
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Since 1910, Boy Scouts throughout the world have been striving to uphold these traits, a mission recognized and celebrated on National Boy Scouts Day, Feb. 8. “Boy Scouts provides an enormous opportunity to experience what life has to offer and it is unique to no other program for our youth and adult volunteers,” says Dave Edson, outgoing Scoutmaster of Newbury Park Troop 754. “Where else can you make deep friendships, explore the great outdoors, learn so many valuable life skills, develop confidence, practice leadership, give back to your community, honor your country and exercise your faith?” asks Edson. Conejo Valley’s multitude of Boy Scout troops serve the community by cleaning up litter, collecting and distributing food, participating in beautification and conservation projects, and supporting the military. About 6% of Scouts (about 170 annually in Ventura County) complete a community service project and earn the prestigious Eagle Scout Award. This year, four members of Troop 754 join the ranks of the 85 Eagle Scouts produced by the nearly 45-year-old troop. Founded in 1972, Troop 754 is sponsored by Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477 and is supported by a dedicated group of parents. "Scouting is a wonderful program that allows the boys to learn and practice outdoor skills, citizenship, preparedness, leadership and working within a core set of values,” explains Marie Edson, Cub Scout Pack 3753 Den Leader for the four new Eagle Scouts. “From the littlest Lion Scouts all the way to Eagle, Scouting keeps reinforcing these same ideals, year after year, in an age-appropriate curriculum. I have had the unique opportunity to travel the entire 12-year scouting journey with these young men…I am so proud of the men that they are becoming and so grateful to have been a part of their journey." Dave Edson adds, “These boys, and others like them in Scouts, have created a lifetime of memories that they will always cherish. There is no greater gift that I could ever receive than the times I had watching these young boys grow up to become strong, confident men.”
RHYS DAVIS, 18, NEWBURY PARK HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR
Rhys spent 253 hours designing and constructing a garden with planter boxes, trees and a fountain for NPHS students with special needs for his Eagle Scout project. “Rhys had a thought that turned into an inspiration,” says Ann Alvarez, NPHS special needs teacher. “Through hard work, extensive planning and his leadership, he was able to turn an open space into a peaceful and inviting garden retreat.” Also involved in band, water polo, swimming, rugby and academic decathlon, Rhys started in Cub Scouts as a Tiger with Pack 3753. As a Boy Scout, he has backpacked nearly 120 miles in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, camped 127 nights and earned 35 merit badges. He attended six summer camps, including Camp Buffalo Bill in Wyoming, participated in the National Youth Leadership Training in 2015 and canoed 65 miles at the Northern Tier High Adventure Program in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Minnesota. Rhys plans to attend Humboldt State University and major in Marine CONTINUED > Biology and Aquatic Sciences.

SOARING EAGLES IN THE CONEJO VALLEY
(CON TI N U ED)
ANDREW EDSON, 17, NEWBURY PARK HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR
Andrew undertook an erosion control project at the Lighthouse Church in Newbury Park for his Eagle project. The task included removing a 175-foot dirt walkway, adding materials to direct water flow and backfilling with over 30,000 pounds of gravel and was completed “in the nick of time,” says church member Brendon Ripley. “With the first significant winter storm forecasted for the weekend, Andrew’s project eliminated the erosion and created a much more aesthetically pleasing feature to the landscape,” says Ripley. “Andrew converted an old decomposed granite path that was being eroded away by the seasonal rains. Each time it rained the runoff would wash mud onto the main entrance leading from the upper parking area to the church entrance. Not only did it create a mess, it was unsafe.” Andrew says he was thrilled to give back to the church that has provided his troop with a wonderful facility to use each week. Joining Cub Scout Pack 3753 as a Tiger in first grade, Andrew spent 138 nights camping, attended seven summer camps, sailed through the Bahamas and earned 43 merit badges. Andrew’s scouting skills recently helped save a life of a teenager who was having a seizure and had sustained a head injury. Using his scout training and knowledge gained in his Sports Medicine class, Andrew kept the teen safe, assessed for concussion and apprised emergency personnel when they arrived. Andrew plans to attend Moorpark College this spring while finishing high school. His goal is to earn a doctorate in physical therapy.
KENTON LUCK, 17, THOUSAND OAKS HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR
Kenton spent 175 hours polishing a chrome Lancer statue and sanding and priming a section of hallway on campus for his Eagle project. “Among those students who have pursued and completed their Eagle Scout Award, Kenton Luck stands out as a scholar, musician and leader at his school and within the community,” says TOHS Principal Lou Lichtl. “His project enhanced the aesthetics of our campus, and his dedication to the Lancer Family is appreciated.” Active in the Wind Ensemble and Marching Band for four years and the Jazz Band for three years, Kenton joined Cub Scout Pack 3753 in 2008 as a Webelos in fourth grade. He attended five summer camps, hiked 63 miles, camped 64 nights and earned 41 merit badges. Kenton has played with the Gold Coast Wind Ensemble at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza and plans to attend CSUN majoring in Jazz Studies on the trombone.

MAVERICK MILNES, 18, NEWBURY PARK HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR
Maverick logged 169.9 Eagle project hours constructing a railing for accessibility and refurbishing picnic tables at the Stagecoach Inn Museum in Newbury Park. “Maverick did an excellent job planning and building the fence railing to help people with disabilities travel safely to access the path from the adobe building to the Chumash ap.,” says Mitch Okui, Eagle Project Coordinator for the Stagecoach Inn Museum, Eagle Scout and former Scoutmaster for Troop 730. A member of the water polo team, Maverick began Cub Scouts as a Tiger in Pack 3753. He attended seven summer camps, hiked 52 miles, camped 116 nights and earned 46 merit badges. He also attended Camp Buffalo Bill in Wyoming and sailed through the Bahamas. Maverick plans to attend Embry-Riddle University and major in Cyber Security. Christine Wilson, M.S., CCC-A
Conejo Recreation and Parks District Board of Director Chair Ed Jones espouses the Eagle Scouts’ community contributions. “Not only are there the hundreds of readily-apparent, beneficial, tangible projects that have been constructed by the Eagle candidates, but perhaps, even more valuable, has been the ethical, patriotic and spiritual tone these fine young men and their Scout Leaders have set for their comrades in Scouting and other young people in our community. To me, they and their supportive parents have provided a significant portion of the moral backbone of our community.” Visit BeAScout.org for more information about the Boy Scouts of America.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
TO PREVENT HEART DISEASE ARTICLE SHARON NORLING, MD
W
hat do rheumatoid arthritis, gastrointestinal disease, toxins, hormones and low vitamin D have in common with heart disease? They can all cause heart disease! These very issues may explain why people who “looked” healthy have had a heart attack or stroke. Cardiovascular disease is a major progressive lifelong disease affecting the lives of one out of two men and one of three women. While cardiac events typically occur at about age 55 in men and 65 in women, the disease begins silently in adolescence and slowly progresses in middle age. Childhood obesity and the younger generation’s sedentary lifestyle make it necessary for children to have their cholesterol, lipids and blood pressure checked. But preventing heart disease requires much more than simply screening for high cholesterol. In fact, 50% of heart attack victims have normal cholesterol levels. Elevated cholesterol and high blood glucose are obvious factors in obesity, diabetes and heart disease, but they’re hardly the whole picture. DRUGS
Frequently prescribed pharmaceuticals like statins can increase the risk of diabetes by 48%, and diabetics have a 78% increased risk of heart disease! While drugs like Avandia (rosiglitazone)—the nation’s best-selling diabetes medication—may be effective for advanced diabetes, they are not cures and often cause substantial side effects. Since 1999, upwards of 47,000 cardiac deaths have been associated with Avandia complications. GENES
While genes are cardiac risk factors in 20% of cases, 80% of cases are dependent on lifestyle and environment. Almost all CVD is directly related to inflammation, the direct result of obesity, poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle and stress. 52
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | February 2017
Cholesterol is not the problem. Inflammation creates the plaques that cause atherosclerosis and heart disease. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have a 59% increased risk of dying from a heart attack compared to the general population and a 52% increased risk of stroke death. GASTROINTESTINAL DISEASE
Food allergies, gastrointestinal infections, gluten sensitivity and irritable bowel syndrome are inflammatory diseases, so it’s not surprising that these conditions also increase the risk of cardiac disease. TOXINS
Tulane University’s Dr. Andy Menke notes that even miniscule lead exposure (2 mcg/dl) presents a 55% increase in CVD, an 89% increase in heart disease and a 151% increase in strokes! An estimated 39% of the U.S. population has serum levels in that range. Cardiologist and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical School Dr. Mark Houston linked mercury toxicity with heart attacks, cardiac arrhythmias, atherosclerosis and kidney problems. Plastics containing Bisphenol A also increase the risks of CVD, diabetes and liver problems. Putting plastic containers in the microwave or dishwasher tends to dissolve the plastic, leaving us eating harmful plastic-laden meals. Polychlorinated biphenyls and chlorinated pesticides are also associated with diabetes and cardiac problems. The bottom line is that toxins can cause CVD and increased mortality. Specialized testing can determine your toxic load. Despite the link between toxins and CVD, pharmaceutical companies and physicians maintain a laser focus on cholesterol as if it were the only game in town! Does your cardiologist test for lead or mercury? STRESS
The relationship between stress, heart disease and sudden death has been recognized since antiquity. An interesting revelation reported in the Journal of Sexual Medicine (2012) found men can decrease the risk of a heart attack by having sex with their wife rather than a girlfriend. Autopsy reports in nearly 6,000 sudden-death cases revealed up to 93% of those who died during sex were thought to be engaging in extramarital sex, Baylor College of Medicine's Professor Glenn Levine reported (Circulation, 2012). Stress causes an imbalance in the neurotransmitters. Research frequently shows obesity, hypertension, anxiety, metabolic syndrome

and insulin-resistance are associated with high levels of norepinephrine, low epinephrine and low cortisol. All hormones affect heart health. Low testosterone in men increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, chest pain, diabetes and arthritis, while normal levels of testosterone can decrease cholesterol, angina (chest) pain and inflammation, a common cause of CVD, while increasing bone and muscle mass and libido. Normal testosterone levels in both men and women also result in more energy and well-being and less pain. Low thyroid function can also increase cholesterol and hypertension. A healthy lifestyle with balanced hormones and decreased inflammation can help prevent heart disease. Finding the root cause of inflammation can help you live a heart-healthy life.

I called 3 services and they all told me that they were booked into January, sorry! My wife got hold of an arborist who didn't do tree removals, but he gave her a number and said: "Try them, they're good.” Hector Quintero, the owner, came up the next day and agreed it shouldn't wait. He was booked out, too, but said he would try to juggle things around. That was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Saturday, he had a 7 man crew with 3 climbers swarming the tree. They worked all day and didn't quit till the job was done. Hector will be my go to guy from now on. Greg T.—Santa Paula

Loving
Yourself
ARTICLE KIM PAGANO
F
irst of all, I would like to say that Valentine's Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. Loving yourself enough to love someone else is such an amazing feeling. And to whom does your love life concern? Well, it concerns anyone we let into our lives. Do we let people love or abuse us? What boundaries have we set for our beautiful lives? As we continue through the start of another new year, it is important to start any new relationships strong, while remembering to be heard, be seen and be visible. Always have a voice in any given situation, and let love be your compass that allows yourself to always be first on your list. As we cherish ourselves and the loved ones around us, remember to wear those rose-colored glasses. Life is so precious, and if you want to say something or do something for someone, don't wait until it is too late. Live for today, and love for today. As I continue to talk about relationships, I just wanted to share that I celebrated my 25th anniversary with my husband, and

sometimes even good relationships over time can get derailed. So many of us take the easy way out when times get rough, while others use tough times as a wake-up call. I have always heard the saying, “The grass always looks greener on the other side of the street…” until the same weeds come out. Learn to listen and hear, because that will become the strength in your relationships. Seek professional help if needed or talk through difficult situations with a mediator. If you and your partner have mutual respect, stick with it, because the rewards will be well worth it. Take some time out of your daily life to celebrate your lives together. We all make appointments for business, medical and dental reasons, so go ahead and make an appointment to stay connected with your partner. Valentine's Day is approaching, which is another great day to celebrate with your
partner, but why wait? Schedule date nights on a regular basis. A great ritual for staying connected with your partner is to have a weekly conversation about how the past week has gone for each of you, while being open to hearing the pros and cons of each other’s stories and thoughts. Remember that it's better to hear about concerns and be given the opportunity to fix them before they spin out of control. Happy Valentine's Day! Remember, while you’re loving everyone else, to also love yourself!
