TIME TO RELAX

All work and no play….nope, we’re not going to use that old saying as an excuse! The truth is, everyone deserves a break from spring cleaning, and what better way to do that than to relax with a nice glass of wine? Yes, let’s all raise a glass and toast to the beginning of spring!

The new Bloom Winery location opened in Good Hope in 2024, and we’re all about getting a little dressed up and heading there for a good time with friends.

From their vineyard in Rogersville, Owners Eric and PJ Cornelius, along with daughter Bella Cornelius Tripp, brought Bloom Winery to Cullman County, and we are here for it!

“We began with a dream of creating a space where wine, family and community come together. We started with a small test vineyard in 2015, which has grown to about 70 different grape varieties to find what worked best,” Eric Cornelius told me. “After years of learning and dedication, we opened our first location in

‘There’s

truly something for everyone’

Rogersville in 2021. The response from the community was incredible, and in 2024, we expanded with two more locations in Hampton Cove and Good Hope.”

He said they chose the Good Hope location because it felt like the perfect place to bring something unique — a combination winery and brewery.

“Partnering with Ethos Brewing has allowed us to create a space where there’s truly something for everyone,” Cornelius explained. Ethos Craft Brewing and Bloom Winery are located at 1849 County Road 222.

“When you visit Good Hope, you’ll find a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Guests can enjoy wine, wood-fired pizza, charcuterie boards and Ethos beer, making it a great spot to spend time with friends, family or someone special,” he smiled.

“We’re also passionate about staying connected with our community. Whether it’s through hosting events, live music or focusing on sustainability, we aim to make a positive impact. Many of the details in our spaces, like handmade shelves and wood-fired ovens, are crafted by Eric Cornelius, adding a personal and thoughtful touch,” said Bella Cornelius Tripp, who runs the wineries. “For us, it’s all about the people. We love seeing guests become part of the Bloom family, and we’re grateful for our hardworking team who helps make every visit special.”

In a showroom, you can visualize different fixtures and finishes in your space.

What better time than now to finally put those dream kitchen or bath plans into action? Springtime is the best time for a refresh or a complete remodel. Why stick to just spring cleaning? Be bold!

Our area is rich with professional resources for these types of projects. One is GLS Supply, which has locations in Cullman, Huntsville and Birmingham. It’s also family owned, a big plus in my book.

Said Showroom Director Michelle Jackson, “GLS Supply was established in Birmingham in 2001.  We are a family business with several generations of family working together across Alabama.”

Jackson said the Cullman location, which is the newest, opened its doors in 2019 and recently updated its showroom to bring in even more products.

“The ladies in Cullman both have years of plumbing showroom experience,” she told me. “Dawn Calvert and Tami Galloway have both been in the plumbing industry since 1990.”

So, you have big ideas for what you want your upgraded kitchen or bath to look like. To help you get there, Jackson recommends visiting your chosen store before you get started. You can browse modern sinks, faucets, bathtubs, shower systems, toilets and other home decor and design products to get a real idea of what they will look like in your space.

“We love when homeowners visit the showroom before starting their projects to get ideas, and do homework before trying to make selections,” she explained. “It helps for them to come in and ask questions, so that when they are ready to make selections, it isn't as overwhelming for them. In a remodel, we need measurements and drain locations so that we can feel comfortable helping the customer make the right selections. Pictures always help! For new construction, plans and ‘wish pictures’ help us bring their wants and needs to life.”

Calvert agreed, saying, “I have always been an advocate for homeowner preparation before selecting fixtures, lighting and other building-related materials.  I love when homeowners visit beforehand to get ideas and pick up brochures to do their ‘homework’ before selecting fixtures.  It tends to make their selection process more thought out and not as confusing for them.  Also, it’s a great help when they bring their plans so we can see the space, their paint and counter samples so we can

see if a finish or color will be complimentary, and bring their budget and/or list of the plumbing fixture specifications.”

Trends in kitchen and bath design change over times, and Jackson talked about what’s hot right now.

“Hot trends we are seeing in both kitchen and bath right now are mixing bright, rich colors; mixing wood and metal; classic paint colors; and retro wallpaper designs,” she said. “Also, dark and moody vibes, with natural finishes like uncoated brass that will patina over time.”

With 19 years in the industry, Jackson has worked on some cool projects.

“The most interesting project I've ever worked on was for a major league baseball player in Florida. We did an outdoor bathroom on the second floor of his house in Santa Rosa Beach,” she said. “I've also worked with country music stars on their vacation homes. It’s always exciting to help someone famous, but they are just regular people and need plumbing fixtures the same as anyone else.”

The local GLS Supply showroom is located at 153 Fourth St. SW in Cullman, where you can view modern sinks, faucets, bathtubs, shower systems, toilets and other home decor and design products to get a real idea of what they will look like in your space. “Springtime is the perfect time to declutter, refresh your space and tackle home improvement projects.”

You know you have the itch. It’s time to start thinking about cleaning out your flower beds, freshening your property, taking stock of your, well, stock, in your garage, basement and closets. Yep, it’s spring cleaning time!

If you’re like me and don’t have handy access to a pickup truck or possess the will to do all the heavy lifting to rid your home and yard of what needs to go, companies like Falkville-based, family owned GSD Junk Hauling are more than happy to do it for you!

“We serve north Alabama communities in Cullman, Morgan and Madison counties and specialize in both residential and commercial junk removal, covering everything from household items, furniture, appliances and electronics to office furniture and construction debris from remodeling projects,” said Owner Clint Burton.

GSD can also remove larger items like sheds, playhouses and hot tubs.

“Our favorite jobs to do are garage cleanouts because they seem to make the biggest impact for our customers, especially during the colder months when a cleaned out garage allows them to be able to park inside and out of the cold,” he continued. “We focus on recycling and donating whenever possible, and items that go to the landfill are taken to an Alabama Department of Environmental Management permitted landfill. We are a fully insured and licensed team. We are insured to go anywhere on your property.”

Burton agrees - springtime is the perfect time to declutter, refresh your space and tackle home improvement projects.

“GSD Junk Hauling can assist by removing unwanted items, yard waste and debris so you can

start with a clean slate,” he said. “Whether you’re clearing out a garage or renovating a room, we’ll handle the heavy lifting and ensure your items are disposed of legally and responsibly.”

According to Burton, all it takes about an hour.

“If you’ve never used a junk removal service, the process is straightforward and stress free: you show us what goes, we give you a price and then you decide,” he explained. “If you use our service, you just relax and point to what goes, and we'll take care of the rest. We handle all the hard work, from lifting and hauling to sorting and disposing of items. You don’t need to worry about renting a truck, making trips to the landfill or figuring out what can be recycled. Our team provides upfront pricing, and we’ll ensure your space is left clean and ready for its next use.

Preparation can make the process even smoother. Some tips to prepare include:

Sort your items: Separate what you want to keep, donate or discard.

Clear access: Ensure pathways are clear for our team to access the items, whether they’re indoors or outdoors.

Inform us in advance: If you have heavy or specialty items, let us know so we can bring the right equipment.

Group items together: Place items in a designated area if possible, to speed up the removal process.

Relax: Once you’re prepared, sit back and let us handle the rest!

Healthy from the inside out

Venture born out of a passion for fixing things and genuine love for the community

When you think about making your home your own and creating a space that reflects your tastes, plumbing probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. It might not even enter your mind. But it should! Because maintaining the inner workings of your home is just as important as making sure things look beautiful on the surface.

We checked in with a local, family owned company to learn a bit more about the business and the services it offers.

Master Plumber Justin Barbee and his wife Megan Barbee own Premier Plumbing in the heart of Cullman. They say that for them, the venture was born out of a passion for fixing things and a genuine love for the community.

“At Premier Plumbing, we pride ourselves on being more than just your average plumbing company — we’re your neighbors, problem solvers, and partners in keeping your home running smoothly,” said Megan Barbee. “We offer a wide range of services for residential and commercial, including fixing leaks, installing water heaters, clearing clogged drains and even tackling full bathroom or kitchen renovations and new construction. We approach every job with care and professionalism. Our goal is to provide top-notch work while making the whole experience as stress-free as possible for our clients.”

She said building relationships with clients is all about trust and communication.

“We make a point to listen carefully to what our clients need and explain their options clearly, so they can make informed decisions without feeling pressured,” Barbee explained. “We also focus on being reliable — showing up when we say we will, respecting your time and property and leaving things cleaner than we found them. We’re here for the long haul to build relationships.”

This time of year is when a lot of homeowners begin to think about home improvement projects, and plumbing maintenance should be at the top of the list, before beginning your projects.

“Spring is a great time to give your plumbing some TLC after the wear and tear of winter. Start by checking for any leaks in your faucets, pipes or outdoor spigots — especially since we’ve had freezing temperatures. It’s also smart to test your sump pump if you have one, to make sure it’s ready for heavy spring rains,” said Barbee.

Left to right are Dakota Reed, Nick Johnson, Megan and Justin Barbee, Seth Ingram and Andrew Robertson.

“If you’re thinking about home improvements, take the time to evaluate your plumbing system early in the planning process. Small upgrades like replacing old fixtures or installing energy-efficient appliances can make a big difference in both function and water savings.”

And, of course, some plumbing projects are best done in the spring/ summertime.

Barbee shared, “Warmer weather makes it easier to tackle outdoor projects, like repairing or installing irrigation systems, outdoor kitchens or garden faucets. It’s also the best time for sewer line repairs, as you don’t have to deal with frozen ground. And if you’re planning a major renovation like a new bathroom or kitchen, summer is a great time to do it since you can often use outdoor spaces

while work is underway. It’s all about making the most of the season and keeping disruptions to a minimum.”

The Premier Plumbing team has worked on many interesting projects over the years, but Barbee said one sticks out

“One of our most unique projects was an 8,000-square-foot log cabin-inspired home, nestled deep in the woods and perched on a hill overlooking a river,” she recalled. “Every inch of this home was custom built and combined rustic charm with modern luxury, offering a unique challenge that showcased the best of our team’s skills and creativity.”

Kitchen design has entered a transformative era, where innovation meets artistry to create spaces that are not only functional but also personal and sustainable. With advancements in technology, materials and craftsmanship, today’s kitchens are tailored to meet the evolving needs and tastes of homeowners.

According to interior designer Laura McCroskey, kitchens today are about more than just cooking—they’re an expression of personal lifestyle.

“Kitchen design has entered an exciting time where the possibilities feel limitless,” says McCroskey. “For me, the design process starts before lines are ever drawn on a construction document. I believe in creating spaces that enhance life, both functionally and aesthetically. The design process begins with a discussion about what a space needs to do, and what aesthetic will bring a spark to the homeowner.

INNOVATION MEETS

design. Advanced appliances are at the forefront, enhancing convenience while aligning with a growing emphasis on eco-friendliness.

“From vacuum-sealing drawers that preserve food and reduce waste to smart appliances controlled by your phone, the emphasis is on efficiency and sustainability. Functional storage built seamlessly into marble countertops and oversized workstation sinks are making daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. Thoughtful features like composting compartments and advanced food preservation methods reflect a broader effort to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.”

Custom cabinetry that maximizes every inch of space minimizes waste while optimizing functionality.

“Forget the limits of traditional cabinetry. Blind corners, tiny nooks and hidden areas are now designed to maximize storage.

ARTISTRY

I also firmly believe that when designing a kitchen, one should walk out a recipe to make sure everything is in the right place to suit one’s lifestyle. Cooking zones are imperative to a well-designed kitchen.”

Modern kitchens emphasize zoning, or the creation of dedicated areas for preparation, cooking and storage, to enhance workflow and functionality. These zones not only improve efficiency but also contribute to a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic.

Cutting-edge rendering software, utilizing technology similar to that used in gaming, allows homeowners to visualize their dream kitchens in hyper-realistic detail. While these tools inspire creativity, McCroskey advises balancing ambitious ideas with practical implementation to achieve the best results.

Technology, sustainability and customization are driving the revolution in kitchen

Automated drawers and pop-up outlets are becoming increasingly common, marrying convenience with sleek aesthetics.”

Design trends have also evolved, becoming more flexible to reflect individual tastes.

“While white kitchens remain timeless and black adds drama, bleached woods continue to be popular. Style trends are no longer as rigid—whether you prefer modern, transitional, or traditional designs, you can create a kitchen tailored to your unique vision. There’s no limit to what you can achieve with today’s tools and technologies. The goal is to create spaces that resonate deeply with the people who live in them.”

The kitchen is the heart of every home and represents a space of endless possibility. Whether your aesthetic leans modern, farmhouse or somewhere in between, the tools and technologies available today make it easier than ever to bring your vision to life.
