The Law of The Harvest: You Reap What You Sow
FEBRUARY 2017 PUBLISHER
I
t is just before Christmas when I visit the Rasmussens at their home. Mary's glasses sparkle with the reflection of Christmas tree lights and her husband, Jeff, is stretched out on the couch, relaxed and candid as he details their memories of the past 40 years. They are delightful and warm, and I feel a surge of gratitude at the impact Rasmussen Farms has had in our community. It's a fanciful notion, but I wonder if their spirit has imbued something in our Draper soil, as we seem to be a place that grows workers who grow their own businesses.
Because in addition to the Rasmussens, in this issue we profile three young entrepreneurs and their creative companies. All stories equally inspiring and almost bookends to each other, as Rasmussen considers closing up shop on the farm, and Arvo, EVO and Make+Master are just beginning to burgeon, youthful and current. It's a testament to time and how things are changing, and testament to something that Jeff Rasmussen said to me repeatedly: The Law of the Harvest.

As workers, as entrepreneurs, as farmers, the life lesson is true--you reap what you sow. When you work hard and do what you need to do, results generally follow. This "law" is true as well in the midst of Draper Lifestyle’s New Year, New You Challenge, where members of our community are working with health professionals from our community. Working hard for results is the literal name of this game. In January we hosted a kick-off party at the Day Barn. To see who will be participating, and track participants' progress, head to DraperChallenge.com.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS AT JORDAN HIGH'S CAREER DAY At Jordan High’s Career Day in December, students met with professionals from more than 40 organizations, giving them a taste of what it’s like to work at a veterinary clinic, a local theatre, or an architectural firm. Such experiences are invaluable, and made possible by the generosity of the many industry leaders who step up to volunteer their knowledge, skills and time, said Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan at a kick-off breakfast where he stressed the vital role that professional mentors had in his career. The Jordan career fair was one of three sponsored by Canyons District this year. Similar events also were staged at Corner Canyon and Brighton. If the idea is to expose students to careers they might like, career fairs also help students rule out jobs that aren’t a good fit, said Superintendent Dr. Jim Briscoe. “These adults are here because they’re passionate about what they do,” Briscoe told the student participants. “Please listen and take advantage of their advice. They have something to share with you of value.” Briscoe urged students to put aside any preconceived notions that they may have about their desired career paths and keep an open mind. “You have to be the one to decide what you want to do in life”—and better now than before you’ve spent four years at college in studying the wrong subject, he told students.

At the Xterra World Championship in October in Hawaii, Horton took first place in her age division, 15-19, racing against competitors from France, Japan, New Zealand, Argentina, Australia, and all across America, Canada and the rest of the world. She swam one mile, biked 20 miles and ran six miles in 5.5 hours. “It was slow, but it was raining a lot and I had to walk my bike six miles in the mud,” says the 16-year-old Alta junior. Horton started mountain biking three years ago when she joined Alta’s Mountain Biking club. She won the state championship as a freshman, a junior-varsity title, and took first place this year at four Xterra races on her way to winning her division at the Pan Am Tour, which took place in Utah in September. Bikers from all over the world came to the Beehive state to compete in the off-road triathlon.

Horton usually trains with her father, who is also an avid mountain biker, by biking four times a week. Her favorite trails are in Corner Canyon in Draper, but she drives to Park City once or twice a week for variety. “I like my team and I love mountain biking,” Horton says. “It’s pretty when I ride and I feel really good when I’m riding on my bike.”

aaron neuenschwander of giving back to others, he co-founded Christmas 4 The Kids, a volunteer-run charity benefiting local refugees, which has raised more than $50,000 in the past five years. After graduating from BYU in 2009, he built his skill set working in international trade at Goldman Sachs and later in international diplomacy and trade with the State of Utah. He has traveled to 50 countries, which he says gave him a global perspective on the power of entrepreneurship in both First and Third World countries. He returned to his entrepreneurial roots when he met Arvo’s founder Jake Nackos through Christmas 4 The Kids. The two became close friends and eventually business partners as well as Draper neighbors. In his former jobs, Neuenschwander says his job role was well defined and the end product was deliverable. But as an entrepreneur, he says he is involved in all aspects of the business and “is responsible to figure things out to see what will move our business forward.” That, he adds, requires resilience, the ability to be proactive, to prioritize and to have a solid working team that complements his skills. One of the biggest benefits of being an entrepreneur, he says, is seeing creativity in action: creating work for people, products that customers want, and new ways to grow a business. He is particularly proud of helping to create Collabor8—the first app of its kind. The iPhone mobile app, which launched in April 2016, has more than 10,000 users internationally. Arvo Watches uses the app to connect with social media influencers and expand its brand of classically styled watches into the worldwide market. “I enjoy creating value in something new,” Neuenschwander says. That creativity takes up much of his mental bandwidth, but that’s something he doesn’t mind. “I love to think about our businesses, the brands and products and interacting with the customers,” he says. “Being an entrepreneur has to be your passion since it requires so much of your time.”

INNOVATIVE THINKERS (CON TI N U ED)
In Ty Evenson’s office, above his company’s warehouse, sits a Warholesque acrylic of him in namaste pose, baseball hat backwards, flanked by two cows. The picture was painted by a friend who journeyed with him to teach English at an Indian orphanage. “I learned a lot there. I learned a lot about leadership and how I wanted to impact the world,” says the 26-year-old Draper resident. That experience, he says, proved beneficial for his job as CMO of EvoBox. Evenson, 26, along with his sister, Brooke Lund, 23, runs EvoBox, a packaging and shipping company catering to small, local businesses. Lund, a student at UVU, handles customer service and public relations, while Evenson focuses on development, marketing, warehouse sales, and runs an educational lecture series. In 2016, Evenson graduated from BYU with an advertising degree and a desire to help small businesses grow through advertising. But that vision took a different twist when he found some extra room in his parents’ warehouse, home to their business, OverstockDrugstore.com. The siblings approached Arvo Watches and let them know they had extra space and could inventory, package and ship their watches. “It started off as a side thing,” he says, but he saw the potential. The time and effort needed to package and ship products often overburdens small business owners.

Draper Lifestyle | February 2017
“I realized that my focus on helping businesses grow wasn’t on advertising, but on taking over the tedious tasks so they could dedicate time to their goals,” he says. Today, EvoBox has several dozen companies as their clients. Evenson and Lund enjoy working with other entrepreneurs and small business owners, watching them prosper and provide for themselves. “A lot of these people running small businesses are our age . . . they are in the same place as us,” says Lund. “They feel like family to us.” Being an entrepreneur in a family-run business has its challenges, most notably bringing work home with you. “It’s 24/7,” says Evenson, who often finds himself working in the warehouse until late. “The business is always on. To step away from it is difficult.” But, as goals for EvoBox become tangible, the late nights and the juggling of work, school and relationships is worth it, he says. “It is like watching your baby grow. You are so proud. The more we grow, the more we think of ideas, the more we love it,” Evenson says. “It is ours . . . watching our vision come to life before us.”

INNOVATIVE THINKERS (CON TI N U ED)
“There is so much more we can learn than what is on our iPhone.” So
says
Draper
resident
Chelsea
Scanlan, owner of Make + Master, an innovative business that brings together the talents of local craft-business owners and members of the community looking for a hands-on crafting experience. Scanlan, 27, has always had an affinity for crafts that are not only practical, but don’t go out of style. Inspired by her parents’ interest, timeless crafts such as woodworking and leather work resonate with her. “ They are the definition of honest, hard work,” she says. So, when Scanlan looked at starting a business, she sought to incorporate these interests with her background in corporate event planning. And she wanted a business that focused on something she views as important—supporting
local
businesses.
Make + Master was the result. “A lot of the struggle that small-business owners have is how to market themselves in a different, creative way or find the time to teach (their craft) and share their knowledge,” she says.

With Make + Master, founded in April 2016, Scanlan developed an ideal way to address both of those issues. Alongside the craftsperson or small business owner, she organizes a class for them to teach their skill and markets the event. She supervises and photographs the class and provides a meal featuring food from local restaurants. In turn, students learn a craft, complete a project, and have questions answered on the spot by the craftsperson. “I think it is a win-win situation,” she says. On the Make + Master website, she posts a series of workshops, about one per month, which people can register for online. For those who’d rather not attend a class, she offers craftsman boxes, which provide the craft materials, tools, and instructions via a flash drive tutorial. Many of Scanlan’s friends are small business owners, and it is these people who inspire and motivate her to work harder. “There is a huge community of people wanting to work for themselves, choosing to work 80 hours a week, so they don’t have to work 40 hours for someone else,” she says. It is that drive, sacrifice and hard work she finds “awe-inspiring” and hopes Utahns better embrace the concept of buying from small businesses so popular in other states she’s lived in, notably Washington and Hawaii. Not only is being an entrepreneur a full-time job (and then

some), but it requires a willingness to listen to feedback and have enormous self-discipline, she says. After a day of taking care of her two-year-old, Scanlan is often up late working on ideas and returning emails. But most of all, she says, entrepreneurs need creativity, especially in today’s cookie cutter world. “You have to stand out,” she says. “You need a different approach.”

he story of Rasmussen Farms began in 1976 when newly-married Jeff Rasmussen and his bride, Mary Bradford Rasmussen, began their life together in Draper. Jeff, the son of Welden (Sonne) Rasmussen and Ramona Leak Rasmussen had lived in Draper most of his life. Jeff ’s parents lived at 12244 South 900 East in Draper next to the home owned by Sonne’s parents, E. Miller and Mary Jane Andrus Rasmussen. E. Miller’s home is gone now, and his lot is the location of the quilting shop Thimbles and Threads. At the time of their marriage, Jeff was a new history teacher at Jordan High School and Mary was a kindergarten teacher in Provo. Having always valued a family, Jeff and Mary made the decision that they would do all they could to welcome whoever would join them—that turned out to be seven children: Brandon, Bryan, Amy, Jennifer, Daniel, Katie and Rebecca. Rasmussen Farms came into being out of the realization that one teacher’s salary would not be sufficient to provide for a large family. Over the years Rasmussen Farms leased a number of agricultural properties that were available at the time, including the property that is now the site of Corner Canyon High School and Draper Park Middle School. As Draper changed from a small agricultural community of 2500 people, to a growing residential community, the properties available for farming have melted away. Jeff ’s farming motto became quality local (grown in Draper) produce picked fresh daily. Those involved in agriculture CONTINUED >

are very aware that farming involves a great deal of work and probably more than a fair share of adversity—weather (too hot, too cold), moisture (usually not enough, but often not available when needed), raccoons, skunks, deer, bugs, fungus, etc. Farming is very demanding and offers no flexibility. Crops have to be weeded and irrigated on schedule according to their needs, not the needs of the humans! 2016 was the 40th year of Rasmussen Farms, and what a memorable year it was! Adversity came in waves in 2016. An old faithful tractor experienced an electrical short and burned before it could be saved. The devastating hailstorm that occurred on August 6, 2016 was the most damaging in more than seventy years—it covered all of Draper in quarter-size pieces of hard hail lasting more than twenty minutes. Jeff and Mary both experienced serious accidents during the farm year, but with the help of a few valued employees, Rasmussen Farms continued to provide local fresh produce of the highest quality that could be produced. Fast forward to 2017. Draper is now home to more than 45,000 people. Open space is no more in Draper, and Rasmussen Farms is now taking the years one at a time. They believe the legacy of local fresh produce is an important value to the community. One of the precious gifts of these forty years for Jeff has been his deep appreciation for the land. There is reverence when he talks about it, stating, “it gets in your blood and is something you enjoy. The earth is precious and what you can do with the earth is precious.” Rasmussen Farms has had the blessing of meeting many wonderful customers from all over the valley as well as from Draper. They ask, “Where will we buy fresh local produce when Rasmussen Farms is done? Where, indeed? 24

Parting Thoughts
Home Grown Parting Thoughts CULTIVATE KINDNESS ARTICLE MIMI DARLEY DUTTON
A
s I sit down to write on the theme “Home Grown”, the ground outside is covered in snow and temperatures are hitting record-breaking lows. This is not the kind of weather a farmer wishes for, but no matter the weather outside, something that can always be cultivated is kindness. Every weekday morning I start my day with the local and national news, just so I’m aware of what’s going on around me, in an effort to be an informed citizen. Often the stories are upsetting, but thankfully, newscasts frequently offer an inspiring story to encourage us on our journey. Those feel-good stories permeated the news, both local and national, in the holiday season. It’s my hope
34
Draper Lifestyle | February 2017
that all those good gestures and tales of kindness and generosity don’t end with the holidays. I credit my parents with being examples of kindness, and my grandparents before them. It’s an example my parents continue today. My dad always holds the door for the person behind him, often greets strangers with a hello or a kind word, and he still seats my mom at the dinner table by pulling out her chair for her after 52 years of marriage. Together they’ve invited the neighbor or elderly widow who didn’t have family nearby to join our family for holiday dinners. And even though they don’t have pets themselves, they recently found a stray cat dying from respiratory illness outside their home, so they took it upon themselves to gently deliver that cat to the Humane Society so that it wouldn’t suffer any longer. Kindness, goodness, generosity are different words with the same sentiment behind them. Examples of goodness are all around us. Kindness can happen in small ways such as holding the door for someone, letting the person with just a few items go in front of you to check out at the store, complimenting a stranger or just offering a smile or a hello. Simply listening to someone is one of the best things you can do. You can thank your mail carrier or your children’s teacher. You can shovel your neighbor’s portion of the sidewalk after it snows. Other ideas for kindness include giving blood or raising money for or donating to a charity. You could bake cookies or make dinner for someone going through a rough or busy time in life. You could take hot cocoa to the school crossing guards on a cold day. One of the most inspiring stories I heard on the local news told of a man who paid off all the overdue lunch accounts at an elementary school. With January behind us, perhaps your new year’s resolutions have gone by the wayside. But every new day can be an opportunity to give kindness a try. If you’re looking for a momentous occasion to start, consider Valentine’s Day. Put a Valentine in the mail to someone you know who is alone, or simply to tell someone that you appreciate them. As the prayer of St. Francis says, “It is in giving that we receive.” 2016 was undoubtedly a tumultuous year in the news. I invite you to join me in a campaign for kindness, for it can only help to make this world a better place.
