Lifestyle Letter
Happy New Year! W
ith the Holiday season coming to an end we all should take a minute and reflect on last year. As I reflect on last year, I can tell you it was a very pivotal year for my wife and I. I ventured into starting Hendersonville Lifestyle magazine. After working most of my life in the newspaper industry and watching it all but die, it has been very refreshing knowing that this type of print is not dying, but in fact is very cool again. With most of us starting our day out with some sort of digital device, from our phones to tablets and computers, with our eyes constantly focused on some type of screen, including the TV every day. Yes, you can read our publication online on all your different devices to add to that screen experience each month if you would like. But there is something about being at home or on a plane or in a coffee shop and holding something tangible. Being able to look at lots of great pictures of places to go and people that you know or would like to know along with informative stories to go with them. I am most proud of the people that come up to me every week and tell me they read it and how much they liked the magazine. I also have a growing number of people who email me or ask if we can add their subdivision to our mailing list. Thank you all for helping to get us started in 2016. Welcome to 2017 where we still have a lot of work to do to continue to earn both your business and readership. We have an exciting year planned for you and our goal is to serve as your community bulletin board. This is your magazine and we welcome your feedback and ideas. We will grow our page count as we continue to partner with more local businesses and organizations. Please patronize our advertising partners and help us get the word out to our community.

is the season of merry and bliss. We wine and dine during the month of December with reckless abandon and then make a laundry list of resolutions to start the new year. We
vow to watch our spending, cut our carbs, eat more veggies, drink less alcohol, join a gym, go to that gym and exercise 4-5 times a week. Sound familiar? Did you know that 73% of fitness resolutions end up in failure before the snow even begins to melt? Yep - it’s true. One small way to beat the odds and make strides with your fitness routine is investing in some new athletic wear. Looking cute at the gym can actually create a little self-motivation. And let’s be real, purchasing new sneakers can help you run faster (my brain believes this with the utmost certainty). Depending on your exercise of choice, here are some athletic outfit ideas for inspiration. Oh - and it’s completely okay to wear any of these looks without actually going to the gym. It will be our little secret.

tudies have shown that nearly half of all gym memberships started based on New Year’s resolutions are all but forgotten
by Valentine’s Day. Of the one-in-eight Americans who pledge themselves to the fitness revolution in January, a mere 20% of those are still at it by the time Thanksgiving comes around. Going to the gym is a commitment that shouldn’t be taken lightly; it can be expensive, time-consuming and may interrupt an already busy schedule. However, when going to the gym is fun, convenient, or pairs physical fitness with potentially lifesaving skills, it becomes an aspiration instead of an obligation. Thankfully, Hendersonville boasts dozens of gyms, dojos, and training centers, meaning there’s no excuse to get around getting into shape.

24-Hour Gyms
24-hour gyms are an answered prayer for busy professionals, college students and stay-at-home moms alike. Planet Fitness, in Hazel Path Commons, offers a full range of onsite classes along with a nice selection of its signature purple cardio and strength training
equipment.

Traditional Fitness Centers
Hendersonville is home to the Sumner Co. YMCA, located in Bluegrass Commons. The “Y” has a laundry list of group training classes from 5 AM until 7 PM, including aquatic exercise classes, yoga, spin and circuit training. Y-Play, the YMCA’s onsite childcare for ages six weeks though six years, is free and open during peak hours for members. Also offering childcare is Gold’s Gym, which boasts a large cardio cinema and tanning beds. Both The Y and Gold’s have an impressive selection of cardio and strength training equipment as well as free weights, locker room facilities and personal training. No list of local gyms would be complete without mentioning the Family Ministry Center at First Baptist Church. This expansive facility is made up of two group fitness

rooms, three weight rooms, two full-size basketball courts and an indoor walking/jogging track. FBC Family Ministry Center members also have access to numerous other amenities including an indoor playground and library.
Martial Arts Training Martial arts training, contrary to popular belief, isn’t reserved for the physically elite. Hendersonville Martial Arts Owner and Lead Instructor Justin Swanson explains that many self-defense training programs are adaptable to all skill levels. Hendersonville Martial Arts is one of the area’s fastest growing Krav Maga training centers. Swanson claims this military-style self-defense system is not only exciting and engaging but can burn up to 1,000 calories in an hour. HMA recently announced it would double its floor space, taking up a large chunk of real estate in the Hazel Path Commons shopping center. UFC Gym packs a punch with a full schedule of MMA, kickboxing and other “functional fitness” classes for those ready to kick that excess winter weight to the curb. UFC Gym, which is in the Indian Lake West shopping complex, is unique in that it houses a regulation-sized UFC octagon ring.

Timed Training Programs
Timing is everything, at least according to CrosFfit enthusiasts. CrossFit of Hendersonville stresses shorter duration workouts for maximum intensity. Each fast-passed, instructor-led workout program focuses on varied movements to consistently target multiple muscle groups --and keep things interesting. With small

classes, capping out at approximately 20 people per group, CrossFit of Hendersonville offers personal attention for people of all levels. A newer member of the Hendersonville fitness family is Indian Lake Blvd.’s Orange Theory, which focuses on heart rate monitor interval training. This allows participants to know when they have reached their peak performance levels during each 60-minute class. Certified personal trainers are always available and Orange Theory’s package options start at just four classes per month.
Boot Camps
Burn Boot Camp has set Hendersonville on fire with its daily schedule of high-intensity training programs; a children’s program is available during certain sessions. BBC offers a number of fitness classes including its signature Fit Mom Ambassador Program, Men’s Program, Kidz Camp and Burn Yoga.

Southern Barre Fitness on New Shackle combines the beauty and elegance of dance with a high-intensity workout designed to render real results. Exercise Without Boundaries Structured programs are not for everyone, and this author is a living testament to that. The good news is that Sumner County is ripe with plenty of non-workout activities sure to keep the body strong, the mind active and the heart pumping.
Sports
Tennis, team sports, and even golf and bowling are great activities that utilize several muscle groups, allowing participants to play away the excess weight. The Hendersonville Parks Department is a valuable resource for information on local adult sports leagues. Basketball, kickball, volleyball and softball programs are offered at various times throughout the year.

T
o get the best tips on healthy living, you need to ask an expert. And who better than four-time St. Jude Rock ‘n’ Roll Nashville Marathon winner Scott Wietecha? To say that Wietecha knows about fitness is an understatement. He’s a physical education teacher at Jack Anderson Elementary (JAE), coaches JAE’s Cross Country Team and leads the Music City Super Squad, a running club for elementary through highschool aged kids in Middle Tennessee. Wietecha’s love for running started in middle school, and he ran throughout college. But he says, “If you live by the stopwatch, you’ll eventually die by it as well.” And after college when he started working full-time as a teacher and training as well, it became too much. So, he took a hiatus for several years. That, combined with his love for eating, led to a 40-pound weight gain. To lose some weight and improve his fitness Wietecha started running again, then decided to train for his first marathon. He states, “I wanted to do it low key, as a bucket list thing, but after a few months I got sucked back into it. I was back to chasing my times again, wanting to see the stopwatch get faster and faster.” Wietecha says he likes to keep in shape throughout the year, not just during his peak running season. That means a daily exercise routine that typically includes a 10 to 12 mile run in the morning and another five to six mile run in the evening. “When you run that much you’re burning 4,000 calories a day so I can cheat more with food,” he says. But, Wietecha says he feels the best when he’s eating clean, staying away from fast-food and pizza, which he admits is a real struggle. Smoothies are a treat he enjoys to get in extra fruit and by adding yogurt, to get protein as well. As Wietecha’s work as a teacher and coach will attest, he’s also committed to giving kids a solid foundation from which to lead active and healthy lives. He states, “When I’m running I’m only in control of my own destiny, but when I started helping these kids improve, to be more confident in themselves, I realized I enjoy coaching a lot more than my own running.” His Music City Super Squad began in 2015 as a “guinea pig project” to bring young runners from across the area together CONTINUED > to improve their skills and share their love for

running. “With the Super Squad I can impact kids from so many different schools, on so many different levels,” says Wietecha. His dream is to have a cross country league for elementary kids in Sumner County that has three to four races. The Sumner XC Showdown this past fall was Wietecha’s first attempt, and he’s thrilled with the success, “We had kids from 20 different elementary schools; 90 percent of them were first-time runners. They loved it, and so many are asking more about it, it’s a great start.” As for fitness tips for adults, Wietecha says it’s not just about exercise. He believes eating and calories are key, “People say weight is 80 percent of what you eat, and I really think that’s true for people who don’t exercise a whole lot. Diet becomes so important.” When it comes to exercise, Wietecha says while running is great for losing weight, burning calories and cardiovascular fitness, “for overall health you definitely need to add something else like weight training for strength.” For kids, it’s about keeping them active. Wietecha says to introduce them to a sport, to exercise and to make it fun. From his perspective as a coach, “You want them to run faster, to do better, but you can’t make it a chore. I don’t mind sacrificing a little bit of speed now for a love of the sport later.” He goes on to say, “I want them to be running throughout school and the rest of their lives. I tell the kids all the time; you have plenty of time to run fast.” Overall, Wietecha says that fitness should be a balance of hard work and setting goals, but also keeping it fun; something positive that you can enjoy. As someone who’s won four St. Jude Rock ‘n’ Roll Nashville Marathons, placed 8th at the USA Half Marathon Championships and had countless other running achievements, it’s a formula Wietecha has clearly perfected. Healthy Foods for Your Diet ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JOSIE BISTO

ncorporating healthy foods into your daily diet isn’t always easy. It often takes time to prepare and sometimes costs a little extra cash, either of which we don’t always
have in abundance. However, the health benefits of adding fruits and vegetables to your meal are so great I encourage you to try to squeeze them in. Below is a list of some of my favorite go-to snacks and sides:
Artichoke: Artichoke stems from the bud of variety of thistle, which if not harvested will blossom into an inedible flower. They are generally prepared by slicing off the top of the stem and steaming. It is low in calories, high in dietary fiber and rich in antioxidants. It has been shown to inhibit cancer, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, promote bone health, boost immune health, protect against heart disease, provide indigestion and upset stomach relief and improve liver function.

Carrying the WEIGHT of Working Out 5 ITEMS EVERY WORKOUT ENTHUSIAST SHOULD KEEP IN THEIR GYM BAG
ARTICLE JEFFREY NEEDHAM
S
cent aside, your gym bag is a pleasant partner to accompany you to the gym. But with a limited amount of space, it’s important to pack your gym bag efficiently. If you’re a true workout enthusiast, cover your nose because it’s time to unzip your gym bag to toss in these five essential items:
HAND SANITIZER
1
Hand sanitizer is convenient no matter what you’re doing. It comes in particularly handy at the gym since gyms are danger zones for germs. In an environment where hundreds of sweaty hands grip, touch, and pull every object, bacteria is sure to be present. A travel size container of PURELL costs $1 and takes up minimal space.
PROPER NOURISHMENT
2
Nourishment is key to human well-being. If you’re spending the afternoon lifting to add muscle, pack a protein shake in the mesh beverage holder outside of your gym bag. This leaves more room for energy bars on the inside. If it’s a cardio day, make sure you load a bottle of water to stay hydrated. Liquids can be heavy, so pack your drinks with consideration. MUSIC
3
Music is a great way to keep your mind off the strains of working out. Take a few minutes and create a gym playlist on Spotify consisting of heavy hitting songs designed to keep your energy high. Somewhere in your gym bag, keep a pair of earbuds or over the head headphones. It’s a good idea to keep earbuds wrapped in a plastic bag when stored in your gym bag. SHOWER ITEMS
4 5 34
Hendersonville Lifestyle | January 2017
After a 2.5-mile treadmill run, hopefully, a shower is on your radar. Depending on how deep your shower routine runs, it’s always good to have at least a bar of soap, shampoo and a towel. Bringing a pair of cheap sandals is a lightweight solution to keep your feet clean from the gym’s public shower floor. If you’re planning on going full beast mode (and have the bag room), a razor, conditioner and body wash are all great additions.
SNEAKER BALLS
A great invention for shoe odor also serves as a suitable gym bag refresher. These spherical air fresheners are a perfect way to keep your gym bag smelling pleasant. Sneaker Balls are easy to toss in your bag while keeping odor, weight and expenses low.
