JANUARY 2017 PUBLISHER
Matthew Perry | Matthew@LifestylePubs.com
I
am not always the best at making New Year’s resolutions. It may be because I tend to reflect on changes and goals at the beginning of a school year. As a former teacher, and then after having four children of my own, a fresh beginning to me always seemed to fall in August at the beginning of a new school year. However, when I do make resolutions, they generally center around how I spend my time, or better yet, how I wish to spend it more wisely. As a mom, I often want to re-align my parenting goals, and personally I try and focus on making healthier choices. I have what some might call a sweet tooth. I unfortunately would choose coffee over water and dessert over a real meal any day of the week if I could (I don't, but it's tempting), and right around January each year, after over doing it with sweets during the holidays, I attempt to reel it in, eat healthier and start over. Any health guru out there is probably realizing I need an intervention and a sugar detox. I think that is what is so refreshing about a new year. The fresh start, clean slate, new beginning….the possibility of what could be is rejuvenating. Our January issue is dedicated to health and fitness. Reading these stories that our neighbors and local businesses shared with us this month has definitely motivated me to work hard this year to make healthy lifestyle goals. Perseverance and a positive mindset is key, and the success stories highlighted in this month’s issue reflect just that.

2. Kombucha -Hooray for a healthy gut. There are so many delicious choices out there. For baby steps, try the kombucha sodas first (they are delicious), and then graduate to the others. 3. Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate. Amazing for sports injuries and joints. Friendly tip: pick the one that is cold water soluble. Trust me….the other version is hard to choke down! Lots of brands to choose from, but I use Great Lakes, sold at most local health food stores or online. JOIN US

Just Let 'Em Play HOW TO NAVIGATE YOUTH SPORTS IN TODAY'S COMPETITIVE CULTURE
ARTICLE TAMMY RICHARDS
F
or coaches, parents and athletes, navigating the complexities of youth sports can be a challenge. As a parent of two baseball players, one of which plays at the college level, I know this first hand. For some, youth sports are no longer an activity taking place in our neighborhood parks and school yards with the primary purpose being physical fitness and friendship. Today, athletes belong to academies and travel-teams that emphasize winning, have high expectations and hefty price tags. Local sports psychologist, and author of “Just Let ‘Em Play”, Dr. Andrew Jacobs, has worked with athletes from high school students to U.S. Olympians. About 5 years ago he began to notice significant changes in youth sports, and parents started requesting books on the subject. “I realized there was not a lot out there, and what was had been written from a singular perspective.” He explains “That’s what makes our book unique. It is written with input from three different people: former Kansas City Royal and three-time Major League Baseball All-Star pitcher Jeff Montgomery, Hall of Fame and former U.S. Olympic swim coach Pete Malone and myself.” Jacobs continues, “There was a real need for a
12

resource like this. That need was the motivation behind writing the book.” In “Just Let ’Em Play”, Dr. Jacobs, along with his co-writers, tackle several complex issues facing youth sports today. When should a child start playing and at what level, how to embrace failure, sportsmanship and defining the roles of coaches and parents are just a few topics addressed. At its core, the book impresses the need to keep sports fun. “The adults have taken over. It has become more about winning and the business of it all.” Says Jacobs, “Children are being instructed what to do instead of being allowed time for free play. There is no time for fun.” Some of what he is referring to is the lack of unstructured play taking place. What once required little more than a group of friends meeting up after school now consists of paperwork, league fees and complex tournament brackets. Dr. Jacobs has seen the effects of these changes in his private practice. “I see a lot of clients who have had their self-confidence shaken or destroyed by coaches. They feel pressure, and parents want them to win and get scholarships. They are stressed and fear letting people down.” He continues “I spend a lot of time talking with parents also, because it all really starts with them.” Sports in general are an integral part of our culture. If used correctly, they can provide vital learning opportunities for many of life’s hardest lessons. “Just Let ’Em Play” provides practical advice based on years of knowledge from experts whose sole purpose is to help ensure young athletes have a positive experience throughout their entire athletic career. If you are a coach, parent, or involved in youth sports in any way, “Just Let ‘Em Play” will prove informative and applicable in your current situation as well as be a source to refer back to in the future. “The hope”, states Jacobs, “is that this book will serve as a guide to help families navigate through youth sports, and that someone learns how to balance the desire to win with the need to maintain the fun.”

The Food Urban Table, a Bread and Butter Concepts restaurant located in Prairie Village, has an appealing atmosphere that is a welcome backdrop for a wide variety of gatherings. It is designed to be a casual space for sophisticated tastes that serves brunch on the weekends, lunch during the week, and dinner every night. In addition, customers can expect to dine in an environment that provides a Zen-like experience while they eat. Like to enjoy the view from outside but still want the benefit of ambient lighting? This restaurant has a terrific patio area where patrons can enjoy the outdoors in comfort regardless of the weather 365 days a year. Branching out of one’s comfort zone and trying a daily special is highly recommended. These specials are made daily with fresh ingredients, and better yet, they buy locally-sourced, organic products whenever possible. For people who like to stick with the menu, Urban Table has a diverse one that offers everything from pork chops to quinoa burgers. A few suggestions of delicious menu items: All appetizers (you just cannot go wrong), the Short Rib Ragu, Chicken Udon Bowl or Pork Belly Bowl, the Tacos de Pollo, and Shrimp and Chips. Many dishes are gluten-free or can be made gluten-free upon request. Before 2013, lunch and brunch was ordered at the counter, but now Urban Table is full service all day. Brunch here is extensive; it features a few traditional choices such as: buttermilk pancakes, omelets, biscuits and gravy, and waffle sliders, but it also features a few twists, such as grilled doughnuts, artichoke fritters, as well as a dish called the Villager with Scottish smoked salmon and other enticing ingredients. Bottom line: there are enough choices on the menu to satisfy all kinds of palates.

Now is your time TO Get healthy J
anuary is my favorite time of year for health & fitness. This is the time of year that I most commonly get to work with clients that are fresh, raw & usually extremely nervous. These are people that have unwillingly found themselves in a place where they are simply unhealthy, out of shape & overweight. They are apprehensive, intimidated & not feeling their best, but they want to make a change so badly they are willing to take a step in that direction and ask for help. This was me 7 years ago. I wasn’t sure how I had lost track of my own health in the process of creating a happy life, but I knew I needed to get control of it in order to give my best to my kids, family, friends and job. I was very lucky to have had the opportunity to enter a training program with my friend that was opening a fitness studio. We had great success (I lost 60 lbs) and I am forever appreciative. 7 years later, I still work out with her & have been able to help hundreds of others do the same. Regardless of how you do it, get moving & fuel your body with whole, healthy foods. Everything is better when you improve your health.
1. Set a realistic goal. 1-2lbs a week is healthy weight loss. 2. Eat only whole, healthy foods. Skip the processed, fake & excess calories. 3. Prep meals: cut up veggies, hard boil eggs, grill chicken breast, wash fruit & berries 4. Make a workout calendar. Schedule 3-5 times a week to break a sweat & write what you plan to do. If you are just starting out, find some beginner videos on YouTube, walk, elliptical, etc. Take direction on form and be smart. If you more active, then challenge yourself to something new. Find a fitness studio or class that challenges you & elevates your heart-rate while building strength.
28
Johnson County Lifestyle | January 2017
5. Find group support. Create a group text or Facebook group with friends that have similar goals. Be the friend that keeps everyone else on track, not the opposite. Finding accountability other than yourself will increase your success. 6. Log your food intake the first week. Be aware of what you are putting in your mouth & how many calories you eat on a daily basis. In order to burn fat, it is necessary to be in a calorie deficit. You simply cannot expect to out exercise a bad diet. 7. Drink tons of water, always. 8. Never eat below 1200-1500 calories, especially if you are active. Your body
needs fuel. Make the right choices on what that fuel is and do not starve yourself. Not only is it unhealthy, it is also counterproductive to weight loss & will damage your metabolism. Eat small healthy “meals” throughout the day. 9. Be positive and enjoy the journey. The fact you have the desire & will to get healthier is your starting point. Don’t put it off. Small daily changes add up and become big long term results. Be realistic, and don’t get down. “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now.” Shawna Wright fusionfitness.com shawnawright2002@yahoo.com

ANGEL AGE 42 Angel Before
What have you accomplished? Losing the weight has been wonderful, but I also lost my fear of the camera, fear of running into someone I knew in public. I’ve found that I’m capable of pushing myself much farther than I ever thought possible. When I look at that before picture, I’m sad for that woman. I don’t even recognize her. The only memory I have of her is just feeling awful and uncomfortable. There are days you have to dig deep to crawl out of bed at 4:30 am, still sore from yesterday’s workout. What is your favorite quick meal? Honestly, every meal is quick for me. I’ve just adjusted my focus on food. It doesn’t have to be amazing. Frankly it’s almost easier to control my intake if it’s NOT amazing. It’s fuel. Angel After Photography by Janie Jones
I was relatively thin my entire life and suddenly “woke up” one day to find myself over weight and miserable. I wasn’t even sure how I let it happen.” Lost-35 lbs and went from a 10/12 dress size to a 2/4. Do you remember the moment you decided to make a change? I had two of my children in my late 30’s. The weight didn’t fall off like it had in my teens and early 20’s. One day I realized there were no pictures of me with my two little ones. I never wanted to have my picture taken. I suddenly had this fear that if something happened to me, they wouldn’t even have a picture of me or of all of us together. How did you get started? I had finally had enough. I signed up for Weight Loss Boot Camp at Fusion. One day at a time. One class at a time. I threw out everything I thought I knew about diet and exercise. No pills, no insane diet that you can never sustain. Just hard work and persistence. 30

Tips for others that want to find their own health: There really are no excuses. Not age, number of children, schedule, not even your sore knee or shoulder. I tried all of those excuses, believe me. It just made me more miserable. In the fitness classes I attend, I am surrounded with people who have far more viable “excuses” than I do, and yet there are there giving it EVERYTHING they’ve got. You are worth the time and effort. You can’t out exercise a bad diet. What are you most proud of? I’m proud that I’ve found my way back to myself. I feel strong and healthy mentally and physically, which has a waterfall effect on the rest of my life. I’m comfortable in my own skin.

“I’ve struggled with my weight off and on for majority of my life. After having 3 babies in 3 years, I was ready to get healthy and make a lifestyle change, so I could have energy to play with my kids and feel better about myself.” Total Loss: 78 pounds Total Inches Lost: 41 How did you get started? One day I was shopping for jeans & couldn’t believe what size I was in. Instead of buying new jeans, I made the decision to invest in myself & make a change. I joined Weight Watchers and committed to myself and the long journey ahead. Do you exercise? Yes, not as often as I’d like, but I try to at least 3 days/week. I will either go for a walk/jog or get on the elliptical and do weights. What advice do you have for others ready to improve their own heath? Find the foods and drinks that trigger poor eating choices and avoid them if at all possible to stay on track. Drink a TON of water and track every Bite, Lick, and Taste to keep you accountable to what you eat. What are you most proud of? My dedication and determination to meet and exceed my goal. Also, that I’ve inspired others to begin a healthier lifestyle. January 2017 | Johnson County Lifestyle

Earmarked for Education: How 529 Plans Help Parents Save for Education By John C. Fales, CIMA®, AIF®
Principal at Searcy Financial, a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm
The temptation to spend funds meant for another purpose can be high when your savings and investments are lumped together. When saving for education, having a “bucket” earmarked specifically for that purpose can get you started on funding educational needs and a 529 Plan may be a powerful tool on your savings journey. A 529 Plan is an education savings account designed to help save for future college costs and other qualified educational expenses. Anyone (parent, grandparent, friend, self) can set up the Plan for the benefit of themselves or another beneficiary in order for contributions to grow tax-free and anyone can contribute to the Plan on the beneficiary’s behalf. Many college graduates are finding the burden of student loans hard to repay and this may be setting them back in terms of saving for their future. In the 30 year period from 1982-2012, college tuition costs increased by over 700 percent and if jobs aren’t readily available for graduates, their debt could hinder their success. The 2016 Parents, Kids and Money survey found that 62% of kids expect their parents to pay for whatever college they want to attend. Would you be prepared to cover the costs of your child’s education? A 2013 study found that parents who save with a 529 Plan when their children are young pay half as much for their child’s education compared to families that utilize loans. 529 Plan Flexibility The opportunity to change beneficiaries on these accounts helps the owner save early. Parents can set up a 529 Plan with themselves as a beneficiary before they have children and then update the beneficiary to a child’s name once they arrive. If you have a Plan set up for a beneficiary that doesn’t attend college, gets enough money to cover the expense or even if the original beneficiary does not use all the funds in their account, the beneficiary can be updated for the use of another person or rolled over to an account for a sibling. For a child who receives a scholarship to cover tuition, they can take a distribution from the Plan equal to the amount they receive. This distribution may be subject to ordinary income taxes, but a ten percent penalty assessed for non-qualified distributions could be waived, thus converting the Plan from a tax-free vehicle to a tax-deferred vehicle and be used to reimburse the Plan owner (typically their parent). While there are many options for saving for college, starting early and utilizing tools such as a 529 Plan can help you get a jump start on financing your children’s education and help them get a jump start on their future. Make a Change. You Are Worth It Micah LaCerte, Owner of Hitch Fit Gym, talked to us about what it takes to begin the process of making healthier choices.
PHOTOGRAPHY PAUL VERSLUIS WHAT ARE SOME INITIAL CHANGES THAT CAN BE MADE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO GET IN SHAPE AND MAKE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES?
The first step is making sure you are ready to make the changes needed to get in great shape. Wanting change means being willing to make change. For instance, if you set goals of getting in the best shape of your life and expect the results without working hard and eating right, then you will not be successful. You did not get out of shape overnight, so you cannot expect to get in good shape overnight either.
FOR OUR READERS WHO ARE STARTING FROM SQUARE ONE, WHAT SUGGESTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR THEM TO START THE TRANSFORMATION PROCESS?
The first thing I would ask is are you needing help during the process, or are you planning on doing it on your own? If you need extra accountability and need the guidance, then finding a great trainer would be the route you would want to go. If you plan on doing things on your own, then you need to focus on 3 main things. #1 Cardio- Cardio is crucial when it comes to increasing your overall endurance, helping with fat loss, Heart health and Increased Metabolism. #2 Strength Training- Strength Training is crucial because it will help you maintain or build CONTINUED > muscle, it will help you increase strength and can also help you burn fat.

#3 Nutrition- Without this component in place your hard work with strength training and cardio will not be as effective. You simply cannot outwork poor nutrition. So eat 4-6 smaller and balanced meals per day. Try eating every 2-3 hours you are awake but meals that do not 100% get you to the point of being full. Lean proteins, Healthy Fats and good Complex Carbs.

WHAT ROLE DOES NUTRITION
FLEXIBLE MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS
MAKE IN TRANSFORMING YOUR BODY AND HEALTH?
Nutrition is the biggest factor when trying to feel and look your best. It also plays a huge role in improving your overall health. I would say it makes up 80% of the formula as it makes up the biggest portion of your day, so it comes down to all the choices you make with nutrition that will end up determining if you will be successful or not. The key is to prepare in advance, get the bad foods out of your home, and replace them with lean proteins, good complex carbs and healthy fats. Also drink at least 80-120 ounces of water per day.

LIFESTYLE OF EATING RIGHT AND EXERCISING REGULARLY WITH A BUSY, ON THE GO SCHEDULE?
One of the biggest concerns I hear is that people are worried about how they are going to fit everything in with a busy schedule of work and kids. What I will tell you is that we are all busy-waking up early, working hard all day, and having lots of responsibilities. What we cannot do is make excuses that end up holding us back. We make time for the things that matter to us. It is as simple as that. If you being healthy and fit matters then you will do what it takes to get there. Once you make this lifestyle a top priority, everything else falls into place. My advice to you is GO FOR IT, You are Worth it and it will change your life for the better!! hitchfit.com or hitchfitgym.com

Ways to Get Your Car Ready For Winter A
s the seasons change and we get closer to winter, you need to take a few minutes to make sure your car is as ready as you are. Here are some car care tips to make sure you keep your car running and performing at its peak during the winter months. CHANGE YOUR OIL AND YOUR OIL FILTER
Cold temperatures cause oil to thicken, which can prevent it from lubricating your engine, causing damage. Fill your engine with an oil of lower viscosity. The number before the W represents viscosity, so if you are using 10W-40 you would want to switch down to a 5W-10. If you are unsure, check your owner’s manual for the correct type of oil. HAVE YOUR BATTERIES CHECKED AND CHARGED
Your battery capacity is reduced by the cold weather.A detailed inspection of your battery, cables and fluid will help make sure your car is ready for the winter.Check over the battery cables for cracks and breaks. The terminals should fit snugly with no loose connections. You can check your batter fluid by uncovering the refill hole. Refill it with distilled water if the level is below the bottom of the cap. To read the level of charge in your battery, you will need to turn the engine off. Some batteries have a built-in hydrometer eye that tells you the amount of voltage remaining in the battery. CHECK YOUR TIRES AND CONSIDER WINTER TIRES
Driving in snow and ice can be very difficult and sometimes dangerous. Make sure you have adequate tread on your tires and frequently check their pressure. If you live in an area that sees a high amount of snowfall consider snow tires. Snow tires are made of cold-resistant rubber and have deeper treads. FILL YOUR FUEL TANK
During the winter, moisture can build up in your gas tank. If the moisture freezes in the gas tank you could experience heav y damage. You can prevent this damage by keeping your fuel tank above half full.By doing this, the gasoline will absorb any moisture before it can build up and freeze. REPLACE YOUR WIPER BLADES AND WIPER FLUID
Regular wiper blades struggle with ice and snow. Consider changing them to winter wiper blades to ensure visibility for safe driving. It’s best to change your wiper fluid to a wiper fluid with antifreeze solution to avoid it from freezing. 44

ALWAYS CARRY AN EMERGENCY KIT
If you don’t already have an emergency kit in your car, consider putting together a few items and storing them in the trunk. These are good items to carry in your car in the winter months in case of any accidents or getting stuck in a snow bank: • Blankets • Warm clothing (jacket, hat, gloves) • Triangle reflectors for visibility to let other cars know you are there • First Aid Kit • Flashlight • Bag of sand or kitty litter for traction • Jumper cables • Small shovel • Energy-boosting snacks • Ice scarper • Cell phone and cell phone charger • Toolkit When you take the time to winterize your car, you become more comfortable driving in cold, snowy climates. A short commute quickly becomes difficult when your vehicle isn't equipped to handle snow and ice. By planning ahead, you can make winterizing your vehicle an annual ritual in the name of safety and vehicle reliability. Provided by Santa Fe Tow Service
