JANUARY 2017 PUBLISHER

I
am not always the best at making New Year’s resolutions. It may be because I tend to reflect on changes and goals at the beginning of a school year. As a former teacher, and then after having four children of my own, a fresh beginning to me always seemed to fall in August at the beginning of a new school year. However, when I do make resolutions, they generally center around how I spend my time, or better yet, how I wish to spend it more wisely. As a mom, I often want to re-align my parenting goals, and personally I try and focus on making healthier choices. I have what some might call a sweet tooth. I unfortunately would choose coffee over water and dessert over a real meal any day of the week if I could (I don't, but it's tempting), and right around January each year, after over doing it with sweets during the holidays, I attempt to reel it in, eat healthier and start over. Any health guru out there is probably realizing I need an intervention and a sugar detox. I think that is what is so refreshing about a new year. The fresh start, clean slate, new beginning….the possibility of what could be is rejuvenating. Our January issue is dedicated to health and fitness. Reading these stories that our neighbors and local businesses shared with us this month has definitely motivated me to work hard this year to make healthy lifestyle goals. Perseverance and a positive mindset is key, and the success stories highlighted in this month’s issue reflect just that.

1. My Vitamix. This blender is beyond amazing and helps my family eat tons of fruits and veggies every day. 2. Kombucha -Hooray for a healthy gut. There are so many delicious choices out there. For baby steps, try the kombucha sodas first (they are delicious), and then graduate to the others. 3. Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate. Amazing for sports injuries and joints. Friendly tip: pick the one that is cold water soluble. Trust me….the other version is hard to choke down! Lots of brands to choose from, but I use Great Lakes, sold at some local health food stores or online.

Tips from Trainer
Angie Thomson PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
WHAT ARE THE MAIN AREAS TO FOCUS ON WHEN WE ARE TRYING TO STAY IN SHAPE OR GET INTO BETTER SHAPE?
-Meal planning, and LOTS and LOTS of water -Workout program design -Workout schedule - when to fit it in? HOW DO I BEGIN, IF I WANT TO START MEAL PLANNING?
The best way to start meal planning, is to first ask yourself what foods your body responds well to and doesn't respond well to. I'm talking allergies, intolerances, digestive issues, inflammatory foods, etc...I'm all about eating CLEAN, whole foods, so I like to make sure that my client's meals and snacks are derived of foods that are going to be good for them. Each individual is different, so if you have specific concerns, definitely hire a Dietician or Nutritionist to help you. 18
Leawood Lifestyle | January 2017
IF I HAVE NARROWED DOWN A FEW FOODS TO AVOID, AND HAVE MY LIST OF FOODS THAT I LOVE AND WILL EAT, THEN WHAT?
Then you need to design a plan that is within your calorie limit and that combines a good ratio of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. If you hate fish and kale, then don't put that in the plan! You won't eat it! Try to find other foods that have those same benefits, but that you will actually follow through with. PREP-PREP-PREP! This is KEY! Prepare your meals and snacks that you are going to make for the week, and have them all ready to go in the fridge or freezer. SO, I HAVE MY MEAL PLANNING UNDER WRAP, NOW WHAT ABOUT HAVING TO FIT A WORKOUT IN EVERY DAY?
Here's where it gets fun! Workouts can be in so many different forms, that it's exciting to find what you enjoy! You don't need to do something every day of the week. Rest, recovery and sleep are big factors in reaching your fitness goals. It really is beneficial to meet with a personal trainer. Tell them your medical history, what you enjoy doing, your fitness goals, and where you plan on doing your workouts. They can help you set a program, telling you what to do each day of the week, along with making appointments to do those. Some of those appointments may be on your own, and some may be with your trainer. My clients prefer doing their "homework" programs I have designed for them, on their own, and then meet with me 1-2 times a week. This accountability factor is huge in making sure you stay on track, and just in case, you get a bit off and need some redirection. All in all, if you believe that you are worth living a quality life full of health and joy, then YOU CAN DO THIS! Don't get discouraged if you have an off day. Start fresh tomorrow. If your circumstances change, that doesn't mean your goal of being your best has to. Angie, a personal trainer, owns thomspn team training, is married to her love, Drew, and has 4 amazing children. Now is your time TO Get healthy J
anuary is my favorite time of year for health & fitness. This is the time of year that I most commonly get to work with clients that are fresh, raw & usually extremely nervous. These are people that have unwillingly found themselves in a place where they are simply unhealthy, out of shape & overweight. They are apprehensive, intimidated & not feeling their best, but they want to make a change so badly they are willing to take a step in that direction and ask for help. This was me 7 years ago. I wasn’t sure how I had lost track of my own health in the process of creating a happy life, but I knew I needed to get control of it in order to give my best to my kids, family, friends and job. I was very lucky to have had the opportunity to enter a training program with my friend that was opening a fitness studio. We had great success (I lost 60 lbs) and I am forever appreciative. 7 years later, I still work out with her & have been able to help hundreds of others do the same. Regardless of how you do it, get moving & fuel your body with whole, healthy foods. Everything is better when you improve your health.
1. Set a realistic goal. 1-2lbs a week is healthy weight loss. 2. Eat only whole, healthy foods. Skip the processed, fake & excess calories. 3. Prep meals: cut up veggies, hard boil eggs, grill chicken breast, wash fruit & berries 4. Make a workout calendar. Schedule 3-5 times a week to break a sweat & write what you plan to do. If you are just starting out, find some beginner videos on YouTube, walk, elliptical, etc. Take direction on form and be smart. If you more active, then challenge yourself to something new. Find a fitness studio or class that challenges you & elevates your heart-rate while building strength.
22
Leawood Lifestyle | January 2017
5. Find group support. Create a group text or Facebook group with friends that have similar goals. Be the friend that keeps everyone else on track, not the opposite. Finding accountability other than yourself will increase your success. 6. Log your food intake the first week. Be aware of what you are putting in your mouth & how many calories you eat on a daily basis. In order to burn fat, it is necessary to be in a calorie deficit. You simply cannot expect to out exercise a bad diet. 7. Drink tons of water, always. 8. Never eat below 1200-1500 calories, especially if you are active. Your body needs fuel. Make the
right choices on what that fuel is and do not starve yourself. Not only is it unhealthy, it is also counterproductive to weight loss & will damage your metabolism. Eat small healthy “meals” throughout the day. 9. Be positive and enjoy the journey. The fact you have the desire & will to get healthier is your starting point. Don’t put it off. Small daily changes add up and become big long term results. Be realistic, and don’t get down. “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now.” Shawna Wright fusionfitness.com shawnawright2002@yahoo.com

ANGEL AGE 42 Angel Before
What have you accomplished? Losing the weight has been wonderful, but I also lost my fear of the camera, fear of running into someone I knew in public. I’ve found that I’m capable of pushing myself much farther than I ever thought possible. When I look at that before picture, I’m sad for that woman. I don’t even recognize her. The only memory I have of her is just feeling awful and uncomfortable. There are days you have to dig deep to crawl out of bed at 4:30 am, still sore from yesterday’s workout. What is your favorite quick meal? Honestly, every meal is quick for me. I’ve just adjusted my focus on food. It doesn’t have to be amazing. Frankly it’s almost easier to control my intake if it’s NOT amazing. It’s fuel.

I was relatively thin my entire life and suddenly “woke up” one day to find myself over weight and miserable. I wasn’t even sure how I let it happen.” Lost-35 lbs and went from a 10/12 dress size to a 2/4. Do you remember the moment you decided to make a change? I had two of my children in my late 30’s. The weight didn’t fall off like it had in my teens and early 20’s. One day I realized there were no pictures of me with my two little ones. I never wanted to have my picture taken. I suddenly had this fear that if something happened to me, they wouldn’t even have a picture of me or of all of us together. How did you get started? I had finally had enough. I signed up for Weight Loss Boot Camp at Fusion. One day at a time. One class at a time. I threw out everything I thought I knew about diet and exercise. No pills, no insane diet that you can never sustain. Just hard work and persistence. 24
Leawood Lifestyle | January 2017
Tips for others that want to find their own health: There really are no excuses. Not age, number of children, schedule, not even your sore knee or shoulder. I tried all of those excuses, believe me. It just made me more miserable. In the fitness classes I attend, I am surrounded with people who have far more viable “excuses” than I do, and yet there are there giving it EVERYTHING they’ve got. You are worth the time and effort. You can’t out exercise a bad diet. What are you most proud of? I’m proud that I’ve found my way back to myself. I feel strong and healthy mentally and physically, which has a waterfall effect on the rest of my life. I’m comfortable in my own skin.

After having 3 babies in 3 years, I was ready to get healthy and make a lifestyle change, so I could have energy to play with my kids and feel better about myself.” Total Loss: 78 pounds Total Inches Lost: 41 How did you get started? One day I was shopping for jeans & couldn’t believe what size I was in. Instead of buying new jeans, I made the decision to invest in myself & make a change. I joined Weight Watchers and committed to myself and the long journey ahead.

Do you exercise? Yes, not as often as I’d like, but I try to at least 3 days/week. I will either go for a walk/ jog or get on the elliptical and do weights. What advice do you have for others ready to improve their own heath? Find the foods and drinks that trigger poor eating choices and avoid them if at all possible to stay on track. Drink a TON of water and track every Bite, Lick, and Taste to keep you accountable to what you eat. What are you most proud of? My dedication and determination to meet and exceed my goal. Also, that I’ve inspired others to begin a healthier lifestyle.

“T
here is reason why I am still alive.” Jody Matthews speaks eloquently about her life, her successes, and her challenges with a sparkle in her eye symbolizing both gaiety
but also a touch of sorrow. Her enthusiasm radiates throughout the room, as she is genuinely joyful to be sharing her story with the world. It is a story that is brimming with remarkable accomplishments: a productive and rewarding career, a family rich with bountiful experi-
ences, and a powerful faith that has been the backbone of her existence. But it is also a story stamped with a life-altering obstacle. An obstacle that has forever changed her and forced her to find newfound strength during a time she was so unsure of her future. As far back as she can remember, Matthews has always been a person of many words, grand ideas, and artistic visions. She recalls her days growing up in the Midwest speaking of seemingly mundane chores interrupted by festive piano concerts with her siblings. She describes her father as a visionary and remarks that her mother taught her to see the goodness in people. Matthews knew she had an appreciation for beauty and carried this along with her strong family values on her journey into adulthood, traveling the world, and paving her success in a career not often headed by women. She proved herself to be enterprising as a hotel manager, an artist, and a banker, and along the way found an equally accomplished husband in Steve Matthews. Together they would build a picturesque life full of family and memories reminiscent of a Hallmark card. Jody and Steve were living the American Dream, and together they were prepped to live a more relaxed existence, enjoying the fruits of their labor. And then Parkinson’s knocked on their door.

A HEALING HEART (CON TI N U ED)
IKE MANY DISEASES Parkinson’s did not send an announcement giving Matthews a chance to prepare for the road she was to embark. It was likely that there were a few signs along the way, but the seizures in which she was experiencing were often quiet pauses, which can easily go unnoticed. It was not until she experienced a grand mal seizure that she knew that something else was brewing within her body. She vividly remembers the day her doctor was too heartbroken to give her the news. She remembers the minutes after hearing her fate sitting in that small, quiet room trying to grapple with what had been dealt to her. She remembers feeling helpless in that moment, with no real solution to how she would cope with what was happening inside her. The following months would prove to challenge her in ways she could not imagine. Her bedroom became her sanctuary, and she spent much of her time there trying to understand the disease. Then one day she was shown a video featuring Leslie Stalls and Rock Steady Boxing, and once again her life would be forever altered.

Matthews was immediately intrigued by the boxing-themed program that challenges people with Parkinson’s to work and assist with balance, strength, flexibility, endurance, redevelop coordination, and restore functionality, all in which help to combat the neurological shortages that are characteristic of the disease. When Matthews first tried the workout, she had advanced to a point where her walking was hindered and the shaking had become more frequent. But from the moment that she started she saw a significant improvement and, over time her symptoms became less recurrent. She knew that the progress that she was experiencing was one that was to be extended to other sufferers, and with the support from her husband she became a certified Rock Steady Coach. She began holding small classes within her home, and eventually Prairie Fighters fitness studio was born. with furniture that will stimulate conversation and build relationships. But also found here are punching bags, focus mitts, and circuit training.
After all, everyone loves a sure thing.
Matthews had made it her mission to be creative in her approach and vows to do things more creatively in efforts to build the friendships she has fostered with her clients. It is because of the applauses, hugs, and appreciation of one another that makes Prairie Fighters a joyful place of healing and better than any shot or medicine given. Jody Matthews is a walking motivational quote, which would read, “Lead by example.” She is truly connected to the person that she has become and continues to utilize her purpose to relate and motivate all she meets. She is a fighter in every sense of the word, and it is through her work at Prairie Fighter that she hopes to continue to create the “happy” in the days of people effected by Parkinson’s.

rlene Ladegaard, an award-winning interior designer and her design team at Design Connection, Inc. brought this 1970s-Overland Park home up to date with an open floor plan and transitional furnishings that capitalized the existing features of the home such as large windows and the beautiful scenery of CONTINUED > the backyard.

“The client told us, ‘Just do it, I trust you,’” said Arlene. “That makes such a difference in the result. My team and I were able to implement everything from the biggest decision to the smallest detail – from the initial plan to the last accessory in place.” Often times, homeowners who attempt to get remodeling projects on their own get bogged down, frustrated, and overwhelmed, and “it’s important to hire someone you trust who can see the whole vision,” Arlene added. Although the client had lost his wife, he wanted to stay in his home. “It was a beautiful space on five acres, but his house was outdated with a typical 70’s style. He had always wanted to remove the interior wall and open up the space, but he quickly realized he needed help. Arlene carefully balanced the client’s active lifestyle and his needs, while bearing in mind that this was the house that he would call his forever home. Furniture, window treatments and accessories were chosen with sleek lines in classic silhouettes in of gray and navy. A load-bearing wall that once divided the kitchen and the great room was removed to allow the main f loor to f low seamlessly and the new kitchen transitioned well with all the new furnishings. The aging in place trend is expected to grow in the next decade according to housing industry experts, as more baby boomers choose to stay in home rather than selling. The trend appeals to the homeowners who love the location of their homes, the extra bedrooms for the grandchildren and all the memories they made in the house. You may reach Arlene Ladegaard principal designer of Design Connection, Inc. at 913 851-8776 or online designconnectioninc.com. 36

To the right: With the original wall removed, the kitchen, breakfast area, and the great room became one open space. The new space now has transitional furnishings in an updated color palette of gray and navy and an updated fireplace in pale gray ceramic tiles.

However, I do believe that we should try to eliminate as many chemicals and processed food as possible," says Cross. Start the year off right with a one-day cleanse package, which includes three raw, cold-pressed organic juices, two health tonics, and two organic herbal teas to keep you motivated after all of that holiday eating.
