Girl Power!

I

t's February, and love is in the air! While you may be conjuring up visions of Valentine's Day, it is just as easy to think of the love you have for the people around you. And nobody understands love like mothers, the unsung heroes of Midwestern small-town culture.

This month, we would like to spread the love to local ladies who go above and beyond in everything they do. It is no secret that some pretty remarkable women live in and guide our community, and in this issue we celebrate them and their contributions. From a REALTOR© who is raising education standards in her industry to two 2013 Medina High School grads that are helping families and individuals impacted by cancer, the women I met while writing this issue are awe-inspiring. When I first started writing, seasoned local writer (Brunswick's own purple-haired celebrity) "Sam" Boyer wisely told me something along the lines of, "Everybody has a story. They may not realize it, but little things that feel normal to them may seem pretty remarkable to others." That wisdom is something I continue to recall when I am out hunting for stories. The women I connected with this month understood that they had each accomplished something amazing, but each was very humble about sharing their stories. They deserve to have their stories heard, though, and I think you will agree that these awesome locals have stories worth hearing.

CLEVELAND HENNA

Artist’s Palette

“Various cultures use henna in times of celebration,” says Kristina Haberek, owner of HennaMe and a Clevelander with a knack for design. She holds a BA in Art from Cleveland State University, and for years she

has been providing individual and group henna services to the Northeast

Ohio area. “I first saw henna being done at an arts festival in 1998. I thought it was beautiful and got it done. I've been hooked ever since.” 12

Medina County Lifestyle | February 2017

Henna is a plant that grows in parts of Africa, Australia, and Asia. Its history of cosmetic use dates back thousands of years, and today it can even be encountered in hair dye products. Pharaoh Ramesses II dyed his hair red with henna in his old age, and the pigment is preserved and still visable in his mummy. As a self-taught artist, Haberek. naturally combines elements of traditional Indian and Arabic styles in her work and handmakes her paste with sugar, lemon juice, cajeput oil, molasses, and natural henna imported from South Asian manufacturers. “There are dangerous chemical pastes being passed off as henna,” she explains. Black henna, for example, is a chemical dye containing para-phenylenediamine, which can cause adverse skin reactions in those who encounter it. “There tend to be misconceptions regarding what henna is. Henna is a plant. The leaves contain a natural dye that stains the skin reddish brown. There are no different colors. The stain starts off orange and gradually darkens to brown over 2 days.” After being applied, henna generally takes 4 to 6 hours to develop. The paste, which will dry on the skin, will initially leave an orange stain when removed from the skin, and the stain gradually darkens over a course of days. On average, henna designs last about two weeks. Some CONTINUED >

artists may also utilize other natural dyes such as Indigo or Jagua in their designs, though those dyes wash out quicker. “Unlike bodypaint, which sits on top of the skin, henna permanently stains the dead skin cells. As the skin naturally exfoliates, the design disappears,” says Haberek, who also provides professional body paint and temporary tattoos. Since it is temporary, henna makes for a great addition to special occasions (or just because!). Since it is plant-based, it makes a great addition to photo shoots— especially prenatal shoots. “There's no commitment, so one can be more creative or bold with design,” she says, explaining that she works with her clients to bring their visions to life. Deja Vu of Wadsworth is located at 172 Great Oaks Trail, Wadsworth. They are open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm and Sunday from 12 to 5 pm. For more information call 330.336.8439.

“I

like the uniqueness,” Deja Vu of Wadsworth Manager Pam Lepley says of working at the consignment boutique. “It's not like going to the mall and seeing 20 of the same things... here, no two things are alike, and you are able to find something unique to your personal style.” The store features gently used clothing and accessories as well as brand new home décor items. Merchandise is neatly arranged from the window displays in the front of the store to the dressing rooms in the very back, thanks in part to the talents of Merchandiser Marilyn Hankins. “I moved here almost seven years ago,” says Hankins. “I had a boutique in the Naples, Florida area. I came with a lot of my display materials, and I knew that since I am retired I needed something to do with those. I asked the store owner if he'd like to use some of my display items, and I've been helping ever since. “What stands out about Deja Vu,” the retired fashionista goes on to explain, “is that our merchandise is almost like the customers that come through the door. It comes in every size, shape, personality, and appearance. We try to keep things in all price ranges, in all colors, and in all brands so there is something in the store to bring a smile and comfort to anybody that comes in.” Consignment stores are similar to thrift stores in that they feature clothing that is potentially used (though it is not uncommon to find brand new items scattered amongst the shelves). The difference is the quality of the merchandise, as consignment stores hand-select items to display. Deja Vu carries a variety of brandname merchandise that is less than two years old, and upon entering the store it is evident why Wadsworth women have considered it a community staple since 2008. “You get to know your gals as they come in,” says Lepley. “It's amazing the friendships I have built just from working here.” “She can tell you more heartbreaking and uplifting stories than anyone else, because people get to know her and confide in her.,” says Hankins. “The success of the store is doubtlessly rooted in the quality and quantity of items we have, but I think customers return because they appreciate our small, personable team. Everyone's talents just mesh so beautifully here.” From the meticulously selected clothing displays to the well-arranged home décor items on the wall, the boutique stands apart from both traditional department stores and thrift stores. There is a certain positivity and pleasantness amongst its family of workers that has infected the store. “We are proud to provide style hungry individuals with one-ofa-kind treasures,” says Lepley. “The value of buying gently used clothing is not only the price. You never know what you are going to find. Whether you are looking for something in particular or you just want to browse, it's constantly changing.” “Like a kaleidoscope, the designs out on the floor change all the time,” adds Hankins. “Rather than following trends, I find that many of our customers are starting their own trends and emphasizing their own fashion. And of course, you look like a million bucks without spending a fortune to accomplish it.”

REBECCA SCHAMING "I graduated in a class of 51 students and was the small town girl with

the big city dreams," says Rebecca Schaming, a Toronto, Ohio native and current student at the University of Akron. She originally attended the school due to her interest in speech pathology, but has since become a communications major with specialty in public relations. Her journey as a PR student took her all the way to our nation's capital in late 2016, an adventure which has only further inspired her big city dreams. She served as the first communication intern for Family Promise of Summit County in summer of 2016, and her passion earned her an internship extension through the fall semester. The mission of the agency is to help homeless families with children stay together and achieve sustainable independence. Dr. David Ritchey, The University of Akron's Director of the School of Communication were impressed by Schaming's passion for her work and nominated her for the PR People Intern on the Year Award. She was recognized and honored at the national luncheon, and as she told me about the experience her excitement was contagious. "I went into the National Press building alone, took a deep breathe and knew my life was about to change. As I found a seat alone, I began to notice people starting to fill the seats beside me. I was just acting like myself and making jokes with the woman named Rebecca beside me, I never knew that she was the Vice President of a strategy company in Washington D.C. until she gave me her business card at the end of the luncheon. One thing I have learned is to be yourself, that will make the lasting impression." Schaming aspires to open her own nonprofit one day to assist children in foster care. She explains that her dreams have always included helping others, and she looks forward to a future where she can continue to make a difference. "I once had a teacher tell me I would never amount to anything. I would like to tell all the young children who were told that they would never succeed to never stop believing in themselves. You are smart, you are amazing, and never let others make you believe you will never amount to anything. Prove them wrong, let it be your motivation to succeed."

Rebecca learned that the best way to succeed is to be herself.

ABOVE & BEYOND (CON TI N U ED)

JULIE CAJIGAS "My name is Julie Cajigas, I was born in Euclid, Ohio, and I’ve lived on the East, West and South sides of town. I graduated from Marion L. Steele High School in Amherst, Ohio and earned both my Bachelors and Masters degrees at Cleveland State University. I’m an Assistant Professor of Practice in The School of Communication at The University of Akron." For six years, Cajigas has been making a difference to students with her passionate guidance in communication studies. Her education began with a violin scholarship that initially led her to pursue a degree in music education. However, her intro to communication class inspired her, and she ended up completing a degree in both music education and communication. As fate would have it, Cajigas pursued a career in public relations that ultimately led her back into education. "After working in corporate and non-profit public relations, I started my own freelance business. For five years I wrote regular monthly sections and articles for several trade publications. I decided to attend graduate school at Cleveland State University in order to add quantitative market research to my service offering. There, I had the opportunity to teach, and it brought Photo by Rachel Good Photography RachelGoodPhotography.com

back many fond memories of my earlier work in music education." Once completing her Masters, serendipity helped her land a full-time career at the University of Akron, and she was able to combine her passions of education and communication once again. Her passion for music has her singing with The Cleveland Orchestra in The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. She is "a Soprano who switches between the Soprano and Alto sections pretty regularly," and her involvement with the Chorus has led her to touring remarkable places, including London and Switzerland. One of her proudest accomplishments as a musician was when she performed in the Star Wars Live Tour. "The real accomplishments that I would call my proudest are the moments when former students reach out to me to tell me that I had an impact on their career or their life. Whether it was helping them through the process of finding their job, or something specific they learned in one of my classes that helped them in their career, when I receive a note or call from a student that lets me know I made a difference in their life – those are my proudest accomplishments. "My proudest accomplishments as a mom are breastfeeding even when it was very difficult, making my own baby food, and keeping my children alive and healthy. My children are Hazel, who just turned 3 in December and Jameson (Jamie) who is 9 months old as of January."

“The real accomplishments that I would call my proudest are the moments when former students reach out to me to tell me that I had an impact on their career or their life. 24

turous individual and enjoys exploring new activities and situations. "I kinda live for my students," she admits. The confession is reflected in her nature, as she is passionate, thoughtful, and patient, making her the perfect companion for college students in need of assistance. "My favorite thing about my job is seeing success—it may be a student getting registered for classes when they did not know where to start, or finding success in a class or a business growing. I love the feeling when a person finds it, whatever it may be." Knight recalls one occasion where a single mother stopped into Midpoint to ask questions, convinced that she could never finish a degree. She offered lists of reasons why she "could not" do it, and Knight and her colleagues quickly countered her reasons with reasons why she could. She eventually finished the degree and found a job in her field. "I think what I most want to do is make a positive impact on people, to help others achieve. We have the potential to accomplish so much. It is so fulfilling to see others blossom."

MILL E N N I U M ma ke s a d i f f ere nc e

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY NIKKI RHOADES

T

here is a certain manner about Dr. Trish Strazar, owner of Millennium Rehabilitation, that reflects her passion for helping people. As she gestured to the gym in the renovated Hinckley home where Millennium is located, there was a twinkle in her eye. “This room was added onto the pre-existing house,” she explains as her staff members buzzed busily around the room. “It served as a doctor's office for the last 60 years, and upon his retirement we moved in and began renovating. Though we've been in business in Hinckley for 15 years, we have only been operating at this location for a little over a year.” Previously, the business had been located in the industrial park across the street. The current location lacks the cold, sterile feel that so often comes to mind when one envisions a hospital or doctor's office. Instead, walking into Millennium Rehabilitation feels like walking into a home. It is comfortable and warm, feelings reinforced by its expert staff. “We all have doctorates in physical therapy,” says Strazar. “Back in the day, you would have had to see a medical doctor to get a diagnosis and a referral to physical therapy. However, we lobbied for many years to get direct access to physical therapy. Now, since 2004, you come to us directly if something hurts you.” 28

Medina County Lifestyle | February 2017

Instead of going to a family doctor that does not specialize in musculoskeletal dysfunction, she explains, anyone suffering from a muscle, joint, or bone problem can go straight to a physical therapist for an evaluation. “It only makes sense,” she laughs. “With an education in musculoskeletal dysfunction, we are the best qualified to treat muscle and joint issues. Our ability to examine an injury is superior—if you want to get on the path of

getting better, come see a physical therapist. A lot of people think they need x-rays, CT scans or MRIs, but a lot of times you do not need imaging. If we feel you have a bone injury, yes, we want it imaged, but oftentimes it is unnecessary. You can skip the step of doctor visits since physical therapy is a direct-access service.” Physical therapy at Millennium is a benefit covered by most insurances. Even if your insurance plan limits the amount of physical therapy visits, you can also pursue self-pay options. Like manicures, hair care, and massages, physical therapy is a lifestyle expense that can make you feel better. Unlike those services, though, personalized physical therapy can greatly improve quality of life, as it treats ailments from arthritis to balance disorders. In fact, Millennium treats a variety of aches, including post-surgery rehabilitation, sport or work injury rehabilitation, neck and back care, arthritis pain management, and even injury prevention care. They have the ability to also treat tension headaches and migraines, sprains, strains, and fractures, pelvic floor dysfunction, incontinence, and vestibular problems. As eclectic as her clinic is, Strazar never had the profession of "physical therapy" on her radar when she started college. “I originally went to college as a chemistry and biology pre-med major with the goal of being an orthopedic surgeon,” she says. “A friend got me involved in athletic training, and I enjoyed being on the field when an athlete suffered an injury, rehabilitating them, and then seeing them score the winning goal weeks later. It was such an amazing feeling.” After finishing her athletic training degree, she immediately sought out a physical therapy degree and began practicing in 1987. In 2010, she returned to school for her doctorate. The entire process has been fun for her as a passionate life-long learner, and she says she greatly values the relationships she has built. “We have served as the athletic trainers at Highland High School from 20022016. When we were on the sidelines during a game and Johnny sprained his ankle, we were able to start treatment right away. I love that. And I love meeting people who come in here for any type of injury and watching them go from not feeling well or having a joint that hurts to pain-free motion in their daily living.”

The difference is in our people, our work and our selection.

Raising the Real Estate Bar ARTICLE NIKKI RHOADES | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

“R

EALTORS® do not need to have any college education to have a job, so if you don't need it, why go get it?” says Krystal Keck, Brunswick resident and Sales Manager of Stouffer Realty. The tone of her voice changed ever so slightly as she spoke, shifting from conversational to proud. “I decided to get my degree because I wanted to raise the bar in our industry.” In May of 2016, she explains, she became one of only a handful of people to earn a Master’s of Real Estate (MRE) from REALTOR® University. The degree has only been offered since 2012, and Keck is the first REALTOR® in the State of Ohio to earn her MRE. According to the 2016 National Association of REALTORS® Member Profile, the majority of realtors are women in their 50's with some formal education. Only 12 percent of realtors have a graduate degree or higher. Keck stands out in the industry as a young, educated woman. In her personability, work ethic, and eagerness to assist, though, she fits right into to real estate. “I like residential real estate because I really enjoy helping others. You get that connection with people who really bond with you on a personal level—I like to know what room you'll put your kids in, if you need a yard for your dog, or how close you are to work. It's not about selling a home, it is about helping people find the right home.”

Coaching agents is an important aspect of Keck's job. She teaches them continuing education courses to ensure that they have the skills necessary to be successful. “I am passionate about raising the bar and helping agents succeed in the business. Had I known what I know now as a new agent, I would realize how important it is to have someone knowledgeable to guide you through some of the pitfalls of real estate. In advancing my education, I wanted to show the agents that I teach, recruit, and work with that knowledge is an important part of every career, and that we should strive to keep learning.” Interestingly, Keck explains that she unexpectedly “fell into” real estate when she was applying for her first apartment. As she was applying, she was offered a position as a property manager. After graduating with her Bachelor's Degree from Averett University, she was licensed as a REALTOR®. Now, she can boast of nearly 15 years in the real estate industry. In Medina County, she adds, we are very fortunate to have a fantastic housing market. With a rich local history that can be traced back prior to the founding of the State of Ohio, there are an abundance of elegant old houses as well as brand new homes and everything in between. Looking for a new home or thinking of starting your own real estate career? Stouffer Realty has 162 agents across four Northeast Ohio counties. n 2014, Becky Lowe was instrumental in bringing a much-needed cheerleading

program to Brunswick High School. Her daughter, Katie, is a cheerleader on the autism spectrum whose passion for the sport inspired other girls to step up and shine beside her. Now, the Sparkle Squad is lighting up the football field with their talents. Becky took a moment to answer a few questions about the program and the young leaders who make it a success.
