10 Activities to Make Dad Feel Special

Healthy Grilling for Father’s Day

Editor's Letter
Father’s Day Foibles O
ver the years I’ve given my dad some fairly horrific Father’s Day Gifts. Allow me to clarify: at the time, I thought they were spectacular.
The first that comes to mind is the Old Spice Gift set that featured both cologne and aftershave. It came in a red box and I still remember the tagline, “A timeless classic.”

I have to admit, it’s impressive that in 2014, you can still buy cologne for under $6. At some point, a gallon of Old Spice will probably be less expensive than a gallon of gasoline. But Old Spice at any price is a bad deal, when you realize that you’re going to end up smelling like the inside of a municipal bus.
Account Manager Ken Finocchio
Then came the cartoon tie. Sure, neckwear for Father’s Day can be a nice gift, but a tie featuring the Tasmanian Devil is a recipe for doom. I gave my dad a Snoopy tie when I was eight and he wore it with pride. Thinking back, it’s a good thing he was the boss. If there are two employees and one promotion, who do you think will get the new position? The guy who dresses like a normal human being, or the guy who came to work in the Power Ranger tie?

Last in a long list were the silly coupons that had no value at all (“good for one free hug,” etc.). Here’s where my dad got a little revenge. He stockpiled all those coupons until I reached 13, prime parent-hating age, and then demanded to cash one in when I was with a large group of my friends. We were standing in front of the Port Theater waiting to see Five Summer Stories. My dad artfully pulled up (after I gave him explicit directions to drop me off and drive away fast) and yelled out the window, “I’d like to cash in on my free hug now.”

Bad taste aside, the best memory I have is the expression on my dad’s face every time he opened one of my so-called presents. His eyes sparkled and he looked at me with pure adoration. It wasn’t until years later that I figured out the gifts never mattered. My father has always been so much more – he’s a real dad.

NHHS Tuning Up for Jazz Under the Bell Tower McLaren 650S Spider has F1 DNA McLaren Newport Beach recently hosted its 650S Launch Party at its showroom in Newport Beach. Select customers were treated to a personal introduction to the stunning 650S Spider. First unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the Spider has been touted by the automotive community. Created with McLaren Formula 1 DNA, the 650S Coupe and Spider are constructed using the lightest yet strongest composite materials available today. Carbon Fiber is utilized throughout the 650S Coupe and Spider both inside and out. McLaren Automotive has equipped the 650S with a refined hydraulic suspension system that prevents hard diving upon braking, rear squat upon acceleration, and body roll when cornering. The suspension components are aided with a wind-tunnel proven exterior shape that helps the 650S slip through the air while still being downforce-focused. The completely new front end and revised side and rear of the 650S have made their impact on the aerodynamics of the 650S providing 25 percent more downforce. McLaren Automotive has once again shown that performance and design can work together synonymously. By the customer’s reactions at the launch party, they wholeheartedly agree.

ENC Teen Volunteer Opportunity Beginning this summer, the Junior Naturalist volunteer position will be called “Leaders in Training.” The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) feels the title better describes the amazing high school students who volunteer each summer. Leaders in Training help with nature camps during school breaks. This is a perfect opportunity for volunteers who enjoy working with children, and it provides an excellent experience to include on a resume or college application. Although it is a volunteer position, applicants must interview to be eligible. The ENC requires that students, not parents, be responsible to communicate with ENC staff regarding the Leaders in Training volunteer opportunity. The program will runs from June 30 to August 21. A two-session commitment is required. For detailed program information and to download the application: ENCenter.org/leaders.

Newport Harbor High School music students are tuning up for the 4th Annual Jazz Under the Bell Tower picnic. This year the event will be held on June 1, from 5 p.m.-7 p.m., under the iconic bell tower located at Newport Harbor High School. Taking center stage is the Midshipmen Jazz Band and Bones West, playing the music of Glenn Miller.
The event is the brainchild of Linda Duffy, founder and chairman of the NHHS Jazz Picnic, vice president of Newport Harbor Music Education Foundation. Duffy envisioned the community coming together to enjoy an evening of great music and friendship all while supporting the Newport Harbor Music Education Foundation. The foundation supports the music department including marching band, jazz band, color guards, choir and orchestra. Attendees should plan to bring a blanket, lawn chairs and picnic dinner. Although admission is free, there is a $10 charge for the premium picnic area. If you don’t feel like packing dinner, Outback Steakhouse will be on hand selling hamburger meals for a nominal fee. The evening culminates with a raffle for an iPad Air, $100 gift certificate for The Winery Restaurant and $50 gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse. Tickets for the raffle will be sold at the venue the night of the event. To learn more about the foundation: NewportHarborHSMusic.wix.com/nhhs

The garments are designed to accommodate the full range of a woman’s wardrobe (tops and bottoms) and, unlike cotton t-shirts which absorb sweat, Bodyology’s infused “wicking” technology facilitates the drying process. What's Cooking?
Healthy Grilling for Dad’s Day Article Suzette Zara | Photography Joy Reynolds
A
s temperatures heat up, fire up the grill. Honor dad for Father’s Day with these healthy grilled recipes easy enough for a kid to make. Spicy Pepper Stuffers are a healthy alternative to those popular fried poppers, and they’re guaranteed to make dad happy with their creamy cheese filling. Naturally low in carbs, they are a rich source of vitamin A and capsaicin, loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits. The portobellos are also a nutritional powerhouse, providing terrific immune system support. Both recipes are easy to prepare and ideal for entertaining guests at any Father’s Day barbeque. Grilled Portobello Burgers
These tasty burgers are a terrific healthy alternative to traditional beef burgers. Portobello mushrooms are actually cremini mushrooms which have been allowed to grow large. Low in fat, portobellos are a good source of fiber and potassium. The meatiness of the portobello allows them to stand up well to grilling. The tasty balsamic marinade provides a flash of flavor, while the low-fat Rosemary Ranch Spread adds a cool, creamy contrast. Ingredients: 4 large portobello mushroom caps, wiped clean 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons chopped rosemary 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 4 slices reduced-fat Swiss cheese 1 cup fresh spinach or green lettuce leaves 1 large tomato, sliced or chopped 1 large avocado, peeled and sliced 4 buns (reduced calorie and/or whole wheat, to taste) 12 Newport Beach Lifestyle | June 2014
Rosemary Ranch Spread:
1 cup nonfat Greek yogurt 3 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary 1 tablespoon lime zest Juice of 1 lime Directions: Preheat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. In a small bowl, whisk together balsamic vinegar, oil, rosemary, salt and pepper. Place mushrooms in shallow baking dish, and spoon marinade over mushrooms. Let stand at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes, turning occasionally. When heated, brush grate with oil or lightly spray grill pan. Place mushrooms on grill, reserving marinade for basting. Grill until tender, about 5-7 minutes per side. Brush frequently with marinade. Place one slice cheese on top of each mushroom during the last few minutes of cooking. Grill buns until lightly toasted. While mushrooms cook, prepare the spread by stirring together all spread ingredients in a small bowl. Brush top and
bottom of each bun with spread. Place lettuce leaves on bottom of bun, top with mushrooms, tomatoes, avocados. Serve promptly, with a side of lowfat tortilla chips or Creamy Lean Potato Salad. Yield: 4 sandwiches. Calories: 285; Fat 13g; Protein: 21g; Cholesterol: 0g. Cost Per Serving: $2.45 Skinny Pepper Stuffers
Here’s a fun spicy appetizer to fire up any outdoor barbeque. These delicious stuffers are actually quite healthy. Try topping them with Monterey Jack or feta, to vary flavor. Or, double the filling, for extra gooey stuffers, and use cheese mixture as a dip with lowfat chips. They can easily be made in the oven, too. Simply bake stuffed peppers at 350°F (8 to 10 minutes), then top with cheddar, and broil until melted (3 to 4 minutes). Use a variety of colored peppers, for visual appeal. These peppers are great for easy entertaining. If making ahead, simply stuff the peppers, cover and chill. Grill when guests arrive.
Ingredients: 12 medium peppers (jalapeño or mixed red), halved lengthwise and seeded 1 block (8 ounces) reduced-fat cream cheese (Neufchatel), softened 1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese, divided 2 tablespoons parmesan 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro, divided 1/4 cup minced green onions (optional) 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 1/2 cup chopped seeded tomato Directions: Preheat grill to medium-high heat. In a large bowl, combine Neufchatel (soften in microwave if too hard), parmesan, onions, lime juice, ¼ cup shredded cheddar, salt, garlic and 1 tablespoon cilantro. Stir well until thoroughly combined. Evenly divide cheese mixture to fill each pepper half. Place peppers, cheese side up, on grill rack or grill grate coated with cooking spray. Cover and grill peppers about 6 minutes; top each pepper with cheddar and tomatoes; continue grilling about 2-4 more minutes, until cheddar is melted and bottoms of peppers are charred. Place peppers on serving dish; sprinkle with cilantro. Best served warm.
Grilling tips Heat it Up
At the start of the grilling season, preheat grill, with all burners on high or with an even layer of preheated charcoal, for about an hour before brushing cooking grates. This process usually only needs to be done once to get your grates into shape for the season. Direct and Indirect Heat
There are two types of grilling, depending on the food. Direct grilling refers to cooking the food directly on top of the heat source, usually with the lid off. It cooks food with intense heat, making it best for thin cuts of meat (burgers and chops) and most vegetables. Indirect heat uses a fire built on one or both sides of the food, allowing the hot air to circulate around it. It requires a covered grill, creating a gentler cooking method than direct grilling, allowing larger cuts of meat to cook thoroughly without burning on the outside. Rule: If it takes less than 25 minutes to cook, use direct heat; otherwise, use indirect heat. Keep the Heat
Yield: 12 appetizers. Calories: 86; Fat: 4.3g; Protein: 2.9g; Carbs: 2.1g. Cost Per Serving: $.88.

It is important to maintain even heat, which is simple on a gas grill. On a charcoal grill, the heat is controlled by air vents. To ensure airflow, do not cover bottom vents with charcoal, and leave vent on top of grill partially open. The more open the vents, the hotter the grill will cook. To get medium heat, keep vents about halfway open.

10 activities to make dad feel special
Article Lysa Christopher
F
ather’s Day gives dads the opportunity to step outside the norm. It’s the one time of year they can relinquish responsibility and truly relax. If you want to give dad the royal treatment this year, without falling into the same shirt-and-tie rut, try one of these 10 clever ideas to create a fun and memorable Father’s Day. BROADCAST YOUR LOVE
Does dad need an extra pat on the back? Create a special family iMovie or slideshow to surprise him. If you have young children, let them dress up, sing and dance to broadcast their love for him. If you have tweens or teens, come up with a clever family music video or put cherished family pictures into a slide show with his favorite music. Have fun, be creative and broadcast your love for dear ol’ dad. WHAT DAD LOVES
Instead of gifts, take dad to do something he really loves. If he likes fishing, plan a full-day or half-day fishing trip. If he’s into music, take him to a concert. If he’s always dreamt 16 Newport Beach Lifestyle | June 2014
about being a world-class racecar driver, perhaps a trip to K1 Speed will do the trick. If dad wants to relax, maybe a few precious hours alone will rejuvenate his spirit. Think about dad and plan accordingly. MAKE IT SWEET
Who says candy is just for Valentine’s Day? If dad has a wicked sweet tooth, ditch the diet and indulge his vice. There is no shortage of charming candy shops in Newport Beach. Check out B.Candy in Corona del Mar or Balboa Candy on the island for some fun, nostalgic candy options. If dad is into baseball, find baseball-themed candy like Big League Chew, baseball-shaped lollipops and more. Don’t stop there, place his favorite candy in a basket with a ticket to a sporting event or movie. MAKE DAD A STAR
If dad has everything, think about registering a star in his name. At Star-Registration.com, you can name a standard, constellation or binary star after dad. Your unique gift comes with a guarantee and a certificate that includes coordinates, so he can easily find his star. If dad is really into astronomy, a day trip to the Los Angeles Observatory and picnic is always a fun option. ALWAYS REMEMBER
If dad is no longer living, find a way to pay homage to him each
year. Take a walk on the beach, plant a tree in his honor or simply be alone with your thoughts. No matter how you choose to pay your respects, always take time to remember your father. TAKE A STEP FORWARD
Let’s face it, the family nucleus is ever changing. If you have a stepfather or a relationship with a man who’s like a father, be sure to remember him, too. Any small gesture is good. Bake his favorite cookies, purchase or make a card or simply let him know how important he is in your life. It’s not the size of the gift but the thought that truly matters. SAY IT WITH PICTURES
The ideal gift, from kids of any age, is to create a photobook. Pops will love seeing his family as they grew up through the years, and sometimes pictures are worth a thousand words. If you’re not able to spend time with your dad due to distance, a photobook is a wonderful way to share cherished memories and bring you closer together. MUSICAL TRIBUTE
There is no better gift than music. Take dad to see a free concert in the park or buy tickets to see his favorite band from college (they all seem to be touring these days). Just make sure he doesn’t try to squeeze into his beloved pants from the ‘80s. DO WHATEVER DAY
As much as dad loves his family, sometimes the greatest gift is time alone. Allow dad to have an entire day to himself. Maybe he’ll go to a movie (without singing animals and dancing snowmen), watch a game with his friends or go for a long run on the beach. Whatever he decides, one thing is for certain. For a busy father, alone time is the best time of all.
SHARE HIS HOBBY
Does your dad have a hobby? If dad is a photography buff, find something that will allow him to grow and learn more about his favorite hobby. If he loves golf, a few lessons never hurt. Whatever his passion, you can transform it into a unique Father’s Day gift that is sure to make him happy. All it takes is a little imagination and creativity. June 2014 | Newport Beach Lifestyle 17
Hello,
Chicago! Unveiling the real Chi Town
Article and Photography Colin Roohan
I
collected my luggage at O’Hare International Airport and walked toward the entrance to the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line O’Hare Station. I took the escalator down into the cold cavernous station which was ironically aglow with a magical fusion of glass tile and LED color-shifting lights. A hip Asian guy, presumably from the future, with metallic clothing and all, stood nearby on the train platform. His headphones pumped out an electronic bubble pop song—one that perfectly accompanied the soothing color-changing tiles on the wall. My trip was just starting. And, that is exactly what Chicago is to me—in the figurative sense of the word, a trip. There is so much that goes on in this city. You see so many interesting people, and myriad possibilities exist for fun and adventure.
18 Newport Beach Lifestyle | June 2014
Anish Kapoor’s foresight to entertain the masses with a large metallic “bean” is truly remarkable. The whole time I was there I couldn’t help but notice something so relatively simple could offer so much to those present. I went to Chicago to visit my sister and her husband. They live in Rogers Park, an area on the far north side of Chicago, nestled alongside Lake Michigan. I arrived on a weekday and neither of them could pick me up at the airport, so I opted to ride the famed Chicago train system. I had ridden those trains before, so I knew I had to mentally prepare myself for the adventure. (For those who haven’t had the experience, a quick browse of PeopleOfTheCTA. com will tell you what you’re missing.) I planned the route to my sister’s house ahead of time and rode the Red Line into The Loop area before heading north on the Blue Line. The beginning of the journey was quiet. The two other passengers on the train were both fully engaged with their smartphones. After about 30 minutes, the suburbs morphed into something more urban—the area was more densely populated and the buildings were closer together. At the next stop, the train flooded with passengers, two of whom were participating in a spirited a cappella rap battle. A stop or so later, a gentleman with a makeshift table entered the train with the revelry of a dunk-tank carnie, saying, “One dollar gets you one turn, five dollars gets you six!” He got a few takers; a couple of people were willing to blow a dollar on his “spot the queen” card game. Then he moved onto another train, a
fist full of singles leading the way. One transfer (accompanied by hymns and Casio organ sounds) and 30 minutes later, I arrived at my sister’s, ready for a much-needed happy-hour beverage. The following morning we were lucky enough to have good weather, and so we toured the beaches and parks that line Lake Michigan near Loyola University. A large number of people were out jogging, biking and skating. The walk along the lake stirred up a hunger in everyone, so our next move involved seeking out food, which brings me to one of my favorite things about Chicago. The city was founded by a mix of people of different cultures, all with their own specialty cuisines. And while making a choice was tough, we eventually decided on the light and delicious Vietnamese pho. My sister recommended a place called Tank Pho, and so we took the Red Line toward Argyle Station (the highlight of this ride was a barefoot gentleman with massive dreadlocks) in Chicago’s Uptown District. When we got there, a pagoda-style roof and ceramic tiles covered the platform. I had been to this area once before to have Banh Mi sandwiches, but on this trip we stopped to browse through some of the fascinating Asian-inspired curio shops that lined the neighborhood. The business signs were written in several languages and the air was filled with the sweet and tangy scents continued >

I remembered from my travels to South East Asia. We rounded a corner and were met by the green-and-white façade of Tank Noodle Restaurant. I ordered the beef pho and five minutes later I was inhaling the succulent soup so fast it gave me heartburn. Next, I wanted to partake in some classic Chicago experiences, and so the following day we headed toward downtown and The Loop area. I was thrilled by the opportunity to get a look at two iconic Chicago buildings: The Wrigley Building and the Tribune Tower, both beautiful examples of stellar architecture. Our next destination was the massive John Hancock Center—the building to visit when in Chicago. We entered, and a kind staff member ushered us toward an elevator. Together we made our ascent, as the man spouted off some of the hotel’s historical statistics. Some were amusing, but my brother-in-law’s fear of heights was even more so; his hands clenched and his eyes widened with every passing second. We reached The Signature Room on the 95th floor after what felt like more than two minutes, and then stepped out into the sleek, mostly glass interior. As we chose our table near the floorto-ceiling glass exterior walls, we stepped out to look down, enjoying the thrill. (My brother-in-law took in the view from an arm’s-length distance.) We ordered 312 Urban Wheat Ale from Chicago’s own Goose Island Brewery and slowly sipped our suds while taking in the splendid view. Even though it seemed touristy, it was worth it. Some activities are popular for a good reason. The day I arrived in Chicago, my gracious family revealed they had purchased tickets for us to see two bands, Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket, in Millennium Park. It was an amazing gift. After we exited the Hancock building, we hoofed it over to Millennium Park to take in some of the intriguing art installations, like the Cloud Gate and Crown Fountain. foresight to entertain the masses with a large metallic “bean” is truly remarkable. The whole time I was there I couldn’t help but notice something so relatively simple could offer so much to those present. Artists were drawing the bean and children were running around and through the structure. People gathered to take photographs, all striving to achieve the perfect shot. The time came to enter the venue, the futuristic Jay Pritzker Pavilion, where layers of metal that appear to be peeling away from the stage seemingly released sounds from the platform to the ears of viewers. We found our seats in the lawn section and laid out blankets. As the night went on the crowd buzzed with an electric energy in unison with the sounds coming from the stage. The following day we made the short drive north to Wilmette, Ill.—home to one of only seven Bahai’i Temples in the world. Before I had visited the temple, the Bahai’i faith had been unknown to me. During my time there, I learned that those of the Bahai’i faith believe in only one God. They also believe that all of humanity is one family and that a fundamental unity underlies religion. Regardless of your religious belief, this temple is worth a visit. In my opinion, on a much smaller scale, the attention to detail in its architecture rivals some of the most beautiful temples and mosques I have seen around the world. And admission is free. The trip was short-lived, but I enjoyed my time in one of my favorite cities in the United States. As we drove back to O’Hare, stuck in traffic, I looked over at the tracks running down the center of Kennedy Expressway. I looked into the train cars hoping to get one last look at a street performer, a musician or a conman, but with no luck. The city can be crazy at times, but most great cities are. I think it just comes with the territory.

Toon Town Pontoon boats are changing the face of boating in Newport Beach
T
he trend is not new. Pontoon boats have been gaining in popularity for more than a decade, but since 2009, the segment has far outpaced others in speed of recovery. Akin to the ugly duckling, pontoons have made the transformation from something that was once perceived as a tired boat for older people to a really cool boat, and a good value. Today, consumers recognize they are ideal for cruising, socializing and spending a fun day on the water with family and friends. In Newport Beach, they have gained recognition over other boats in their segment and they are well on their way to becoming the little darlings of Newport Harbor, in both the rental and sales markets. This comes as no surprise to Garrison Williams, an avid boater and co-owner of Newport Pontoons, Inc. He, along with his wife Brandon, have seen the growth in pontoon sales and rentals firsthand. Recently, Garrison shared his thoughts on pontoon boats and how they happened upon the business. NBL: How did you get into the business and eventually come to own
Newport Pontoons, Inc.? I moved to Newport Beach, my friends took me out on a Duffy. I had never been on one. When we returned, I realized I was still sitting in the same place as when we left. We had a large group on the boat and I was only able to communicate with friends sitting next to, or across from me. After we returned, I asked my friends if there was a better boat for cruising the harbor. They replied, “No. That’s when I decided I was going to put a better rental boat in Newport Harbor.
GW: When
22 Newport Beach Lifestyle | June 2014
NBL: How is a pontoon boat different?
A pontoon boat has more room, comfort and amenities. It is also a lot more stable and safer than any other type of rental boat. NBL: You started as a rental company. How did you come to own a dealership? GW: Our dealership was a natural progression of the business. After customers rented a pontoon, many of them would come in and ask where they could purchase one of our rental boats. Instead of sending them elsewhere, we created the dealership. Now, Newport Pontoons, Inc. is a full-service company. We have rentals, sales and a complete service department. NBL: There has been quite a stigma associated with pontoon boats over the years. How has this changed? GW: Pontoon boats today are as luxurious as any boat on the water. In many instances they are a lot nicer too. These are not the plywood-and-tube boats your grandfather strapped together, and outRental and Sales fitted with lawn chairs, so Newport Pontoons, Inc. he could cruise around in 3101 West Coast Hwy, #222B the water. Newport Beach Today, pontoon boats are 949.631.3333 equivalent to a BMW or NewportPontoons.com Mercedes. We are lucky to have landed the dealership GW:

rights to Avalon Luxury Pontoon Boats; they are some of the finest pontoons available on the market. The company has been making pontoons for more than 40 years. Our Newport Beach customers appreciate the comfort, luxury and style of an Avalon, and enjoy all the benefits that a pontoon boat has to offer. NBL: Where can people rent your boats? GW: We rent our boats on Newport Harbor. Newport Pontoons, Inc. will be expanding to the San Diego and Long Beach harbors in the coming years. Our boats have quickly become a favorite of anyone who has been out on one. Our rental fleet has the newest boats in Newport Harbor. Our oldest rental boat is only eight months old, and this summer four brand-new boats will be added to our fleet. Each year, we sell our rentals and rotate new boats into our fleet to ensure the best and newest boats are available to our customers. NBL: Do you believe pontoon boats are gaining popularity? GW: Yes! Although many people remain unaware, that seems to be rapidly changing. I guarantee, if someone takes time to look at one of our pontoon boats, they will look twice. If they’re considering a similar boat in the same class as a Duffy, ski boat, deck boat or fishing boat, they will likely change their mind and buy a pontoon. Today, pontoon boats can be used to cruise, bask in the sun and socialize with friends. You can sleep on them, use them for fishing or even ski or wakeboard behind them. You can even find
a secluded cove and barbecue on the boat while you entertain guests. The options are limitless. NBL: Are there any environmental benefits to owning a pontoon? GW: Yes, the entire boat is made of 100 percent recyclable aluminum, and we can outfit an environmentally friendly electric motor on any new pontoon. We have sold several boats equipped this way for people who had the same concerns. We still provide gas engines because they have the advantage of extra power. However, today’s new gas engines are amazing. They are no longer loud or produce gas fumes like they did years ago. They are quiet and efficient; you would think they were electric. Pontoons are actually more environmentally friendly than any V-hull fiberglass boat, since fiberglass is not biodegradable.

Parting Thoughts
If It’s Really Important, You’ll Remember Words Paul Sterman
D
ads do so much. When you’re young, you don’t always get that. As a teenager, I couldn’t see beyond myself. I didn’t have the perspective to fully appreciate what my father did for me and my two sisters. But as an adult--and a parent myself--my perspective is crystal-clear: He did so much. I marvel at how my Dad provided for and protected his family. This parenting stuff is hard. Yet he managed to give us everything we wanted or needed, he planned for our futures and prepared us to be adults. (My Mom was equally important in all this, but that’s a column for another day.) With Father’s Day rolling around on June 15, this is a good time to recognize all the dads out there, and express gratitude for what they’ve done--and what they do. We all have our own memories and stories. What are yours? Mine are about a man who showed me many things: what hard work means, why honesty matters, when to speak out … and how to drive. Yes, those practical skills in life are among the best gifts our dads give us. And Bob Sterman is nothing if not practical. He showed me how to balance a checkbook, how to tip at restaurants, how to check
the air in my tires, and how to read baseball box scores. How to tie a necktie and how to be thrifty. (My Dad wore the same raincoat for 25 years—“Why do you need a new one if it still works?”) And always turns off lights in empty rooms. A practical man he may be, but also a lover of all the best things in life: vacations, films, plays, Chinese food, Chocolate Egg Creams, and the great pleasure of reading the daily newspaper. I gleaned many pearls of wisdom from my Dad, and here’s one: When I told him I get overwhelmed trying to remember all the things I should do in life, he told me, “Don’t worry. If it’s really important, you’ll remember it.” That still holds true. When I was 12 and closing in on my Bar Mitzvah, my Dad and I stood in front of the mirror one day for a male rite of passage: He taught me how to shave. He explained how to properly lather my face with shaving cream. Then how to wield the razor and move it across my skin with the right technique. When I was 15, my Dad sat beside me in his Plymouth Barracuda and taught me the fundamentals of driving. After I got my license, he bequeathed the Barracuda to me. I loved that car. For that, and so much more: Thanks, Dad. Happy Father’s Day.
