Lifestyle Letter

Greetings friends!

FEBRUARY 2017 PUBLISHER

M

y dad was a small business owner and entrepreneur, working with the Detroit automotive industry for nearly 50 years. His plant did vacuum metalizing and injection molding for the Big Three, cranking out tens of thousands shiny silver Chrysler logos for sedan dashboards, long plastic swooshes for exterior trim on Ford station wagons and occasionally working with a pal to design, manufacture and market some cool gizmo Sue Collins and Alan or gadget. They weren’t called “start-ups” back then. They were Mothner, in the Dunwoody Nature just guys with good ideas, a building full of tools and machines, Center "offices." a list of customers and a copy machine. As a kid, I would ride my bike to the plant and make five bucks mowing the lawn (which was actually a field of crabgrass and loose rocks) or organize his desk for him. Dad was a Rotarian, contributed to local fundraisers and gave jobs to my siblings and their friends, no matter their skill level or hair length (I had 4 brothers, teens in the 70s). Long Live Sparling Plastic Industries! This magazine is all about locally owned businesses. YOUNG SCIENTISTS Fulton Science Academy’s robotics team “Control+Alt+Delete” had a strong weekend at the First Lego League (FLL) Regional Robotics Championships, taking home both the First Place Champion’s Award and the Best Overall Robot Performance Award. The results of the weekend competition were exciting, but the fact that the awards were secured by the school’s first all-female robotics team made it even more special. More than 32,000 FLL teams compete in robotics competitions like this one annually, very few of which are comprised of only female students. The FLL challenges kids in more than 80 countries to think like scientists and engineers. Students were expected to address the problem and propose a solution using detailed research, presentation materials, and the creation of a prototype. They also had to build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology to solve a set of missions in the competition’s Robot Game. Throughout their experience, teams had to operate under the FIRST LEGO League signature set of Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®. Control+Alt+Delete decided to tackle this project by researching a more natural way to eliminate mosquitos without using pesticides because pesticides have been linked to adverse health effects including brain tumors. O

wning a home is one thing, but when there is the possibility to make the backyard a personal paradise, look no further than Chris Sears and his company Sears, Smith and Associates, Inc. Sears, 44, is a Georgia Registered Landscape Architect and company president who developed his expertise thanks to his Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University. Adding that to more than a decade of work experience in Georgia, and the result is Sears virtually becoming a property owner's Wizard of Oz. Sears also holds a Commercial GC [General Contractors] license with the state of Georgia, "which makes me more qualified than any of my competition to implement our designs," Sears says. "From a knowledge, licensing and liability standpoint, many folks don't realize that hiring a 'landscaper' isn't the same as a licensed GC that handles the electrical, plumbing, utilities, and other elements of a big outdoor pavilion and kitchen near a pool. We have a separate entity to install our designs, A&C development, etc., which has no legal limitations when delivering a large, complex project." CONTINUED >

With so many services to offer, Sears notes that there are certainly some challenges to carrying out a project—especially an extravagant one—from beginning to end. "We meet for an hour or two on site, review your 'program,' the goals and objectives, and discuss the best options," Sears explains. "Sometimes small sketches are all that's needed for a few hundred dollars, or sometimes it takes several thousand for detailed plans. We help you understand the permitting issues, limitations and pitfalls, and of course, look for opportunities to create as wonderful an environment as you can invest." He continues, "The devil is always in the details, and we help you understand if your ideas are going to be feasible within your budget. We have smaller residential projects from $15,000 to larger ones well over $100,000. Some of our commercial or larger client projects have been over $1 million." Selecting one his favorite renovations of late, Sears made arrangements to share with us the backyard of a home nestled in a Brookhaven neighborhood just off Ashford Dunwoody Road he recently renovated. Opening the door of a high wooden fence secluding the half-acre backyard from street view, a multi-purpose sports court with weatherproof VersaCourt flooring and a glass basketball backboard immediately catches the eyes. Sears recounts, "This used to be only a lot of trees, but once I met with the homeowners, they said they wanted something for their teenage boys to play in; this was the result and they love it." Of course, the parents had to have their entertainment as well, so Sears added a raised deck complete with a Big Green Egg cooking station, and a Zen-inspired section complete with a private waterfall and a stone-lined stream to cleverly direct rainwater from an adjacent home elevated on a hill. It's overall an exclusive escape from the bustling city life friends and family can enjoy all year long.

Emphasizing why this particular property hits close to home, Sears says, "Water features and fireplaces are of course common, but sport courts are a fun, new twist. Having three boys myself—plus actively coaching sports—we see the need for companies that can not only build great usable environments, but have them all tie together, look great for the adults, and still be functional for the kids." Keeping a fresh outlook on what clients may want, Sears loves globetrotting whenever possible to get more inspiration. He has been to Europe, the West Indies, Canada, Mexico, and just returned from a trip to Montana; loving what he saw in the latter, Sears says he is now looking for an opportunity to insert some rustic wood and elk antlers in a future development. "I love to work with the local elements for a 'sense of place' so to speak, but we try to tailor and customize our work to the clients' desires, ultimately," he says. "We are focused on growing a reputation for exceeding expectations and creating memorable places.” For more information, visit searssmithlandscape.com. 16

Casting the Perfect Cheese Plate

J

ust like any movie it is the cast of characters that makes the film an award winner. So too with the

perfect cheese plate. As we salute the Grammy Awards (February 12) and the Academy Awards (February 28), consider entertaining your crew (or just your two leads) with this perennial favorite. Remember that variety is the key. Fresh fruit, berries, nuts, crackers, olives, pâtés, grilled vegetables, charcuterie, mustard, jams, artichokes, pickles, honey, and breads are always accompanied by the most delicious selection of cheese that will not only whet the appetite of any discerning palate but satiate every guest. Allow us to present this script to an award winning cheese plate for your show. Always start with an amazing cutting board. Rustic or polished, new or old, the foundation of an incredible cheese plate is the first thing to consider. Just like a painter's palette, a perfect board will hold the color and diversity of your offerings. Remember that with most things in life, bigger is better and with all that you will be putting on your cheese plate be sure to remember your supporting cast of knives, small bowls, spoons, honey dippers, and cocktail napkins. And if you run out of room create a secondary board....a sequel, if you will.

18

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | February 2017

Variety is the spice of life and with literally thousands of cheeses around the world there are so many options. If cheddar is your favorite then try a cheddar from another country. Continue the show by celebrating globally and check out some foreign cheeses as well as cheese made from cow, goat, sheep, yak, or even mixed milk cheese. Consulting a cheesemonger is perfectly acceptable, they are the perfect casting agent after all. While everyone loves cheese not everyone loves gluten so source out a terrific brown rice cracker for those friends who stay away from wheat. And for that matter, try a different selection of crackers and breads, both sweet and savory. Remember to be creative and be daring. Now, on with the show!

Sean’s casting call for the perfect plate Local honey, seeded oat crackers, Petit

Basques

sheep's milk cheese, berry skewers, Marcona almonds, goat's cheese with candied pecan dust, Spotted Trotter Bresaola, Spotted Trotter Southern Smash dried and cured pork salami and Spotted Trotter Coppa, Burrata with black truffles finished with Pecan Ridge truffle oil and balsamic reduction, grape tomatoes, olives, pickled mushrooms, Spotted Trotter Rosso Spezia, Irish cheddar, quince paste, rice crackers, grapes and Ile De France Camembert cheese. Packaging Love ARTICLE VALERIE SHEPHERD

T

he Packaged Good is a non-profit storefront in Dunwoody that empowers kids to do good. They host drop-in events, meetings and parties for kids, families and friends to gather and compile, decorate and personalize care packages for people in need. Empowering kids to do good while inspiring the next generation of giving, Whether it’s giving to our armed forces, homeless or hospitalized kids, The Packaged Good partners with vetted, reputable non-profits to allow volunteers the ability to support causes closest to their hearts while handling all of the logistics. After recently losing her husband, Sally Mundell of Brookhaven found that channeling her grieving into giving provided a path of healing for herself and her two young girls. It was her late husband who planted the seed for the new foundation, The Packaged Good.Â

20

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | February 2017

Sally shared with me that during beloved husband’s last weeks in the hospital, he came to a conclusion with clarity. Giving and volunteering are the answers to life’s mysteries. One of his last requests? To start a foundation to support this, and he asked Sally to help him. She previously held a high position at Spanx and when the founder Sara Blakely asked what she could do to help Sally during the family’s challenging time, The Packaged Good started to take shape. Since then, many collaborations have bloomed. During the holidays, journalist and entrepreneur Kristen Rocco stepped in to help people write more meaningful letters at The Packaged Good. Her business, The Love

Notery is in Johns Creek and helps couples turn their own love story into a keepsake (like the one below). Her business is telling meaningful and personal stories, turning history into a keepsake. “When I first began, I wrote and documented love stories for couples to immortalize their story as a family heirloom. Then I began to work with sons and daughters to give meaningful and personal Mother’s and Father’s Day gifts. And then I just kept adding anything that brought meaning to someone’s treasured love story!” said Kristen. “Partnering with Love Notery was a great opportunity for the children in our community to express their gratitude to the troops. We hear from soldiers all over the world

how much children's letters mean to them and keep them going when they are lonely and missing their families. We can teach our children that even at an early age, they can be kind and make a difference,” said Sally. This February, as our hearts glow warmer, I know Kristen’s passion for love stories and Sally’s commitment to volunteerism and kindness, will bring inspiration not just to the lucky citizens of Atlanta, but to those all around the world. 5517 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd

he Dunwoody Nature Center is often referred to as the crown jewel of Dunwoody parks, and Wildcat Creek is the shining gem of that crown. The creek is literally the introduction point for thousands of children each year to the wonders of nature and to an understanding of their small place in the larger world. The restoration project has corrected decades of deteriorating creek conditions (scouring and erosion along the creek banks) while still providing access to visitors to experience firsthand the beauty of this unique habitat. Upon our arrival, it was evident that the property was expansive and diverse (1600 acres of property to be exact), which seemed to have something for everyone, from golf to tennis, biking and a breathtaking beach for long walks and relaxing in the warm breeze. At the center of the property is the Village Plaza, which hosts resort check in, a fitness center, resort shops, and several restaurants. The property offers several types of accommodations, from traditional hotel rooms at the Village Plaza to the newly renovated, Boardwalk Inn, which completed a major redesign in 2016. Four pools adorn the grounds. This property has 93 luxury rooms, beach views and is a quick walk to the sand. Wild Dunes also offers a variety of private condos, villas and beach house rentals. Thrilled with our accommodations, we stayed in one of the charming and colorful boardwalk homes which line the Grand Pavilion pool. And from our fourth-story balcony had amazingly breathtaking views of the ocean and dunes. Staying true to the historic feel of the area, the Boardwalk homes were designed with a pastel color palate to reflect rainbow row, the famous street in Charleston. These homes are fantastic for large families or several families vacationing together. For golf and tennis enthusiasts, the property boasts two Tom Fazio-designed courses. With 18 tennis courts, Wild Dunes

LOVELY is one of the top tennis resorts in the world. And for families with kids, the property has day camps, kids and family golf and tennis, life-size board games, outdoor movies, and s’mores kits which can be purchased at Hudson's Market to enjoy at the large fire pit in the Village Plaza. We had the pleasure of dining at the new restaurant inside the Boardwalk Inn, Coastal Provisions where Chef Brett Sparman and Sous Chef Read cooked up delectable low country dishes with an elegant twist. Our favorite dish was the sunchokes, roasted and flash fried with creamy aioli. Delish! And after a lazy day on the beach, we set out on a wonderful sunset dolphin cruise with Coastal Expeditions. We slowly cruised the Inter-coastal waterway lined with tall grassy marsh, and stopped at Capers Island to explore and hunt for giant shells. The staff allowed the kids on board to The lovely dining room at S.N.O.B.

assist pulling up crab traps and shared knowledge about marine life. And yes, we also got to see a few graceful and friendly dolphins swimming along side the boat. Since the property is only a short 45-minute ride to historic Charleston, for us there were two must do's in the city: take a horse-drawn carriage ride tour and eat at S.N.O.B.(Slightly North of Broad). The restaurant decor is eclectic, yet holds old southern charm in a fantastic 18th-century warehouse with an open kitchen serving up reinvented low country cuisine. Known best for having the best shrimp and grits in town, S.N.O.B serves and the most delicious and largest piece of apple pie I've ever eaten. The lovely establishment serves up southern cuisine and is very proud to have a loyal clientele, returning time after time, when they visit Charleston. After four days at the resort, we understood why so many return to Wild Dunes for the warm hospitality, the wide array of luxury amenities, the world-class tennis and golf and the warm sandy beach that beckon. A different type of ‘hybrid’:

Muscle Car meets SUV ARTICLE DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON

n common terms, the “hybrid” badge refers to the combination of both electric and gas in a vehicle, but in the

case of the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, it has been reinvented to mean muscle car meets SUV. For the individual who wants power, luxury and stunning looks enjoyed by up to four other thrill-seeking adults, the hunt is over. This is it. Immediately appreciating the curvaceous, muscular exterior enamored with 20-inch, five-spoked wheels; Bi-Xenon headlights; the signature red Brembo brakes; and a dualpane panoramic sunroof, the interior is just as sexy for especially the racing enthusiast. Jeep evidently makes the riding experience a top priority evidenced by the perforated Ultrasuede-laced leather seats, Uconnect technology, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen displaying the latest Performance Pages Plus has to offer. Now let’s hit the road.

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | February 2017

The SRT label—Street and Racing Technology—is no fluke on this automobile. The 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine whips 475 horses into shape complete with a goosebumps-inducing 470 lb-ft of torque and Selec-Track System providing various driving modes by the turn of the dial. For those who don’t find the roar of this beast pleasing to the ear, the cabin’s Active Noise Cancellation, and 19-speaker, 825-watt Harman Kardon sound system with subwoofer will certainly provide another option. To combat one of the very few logical drawbacks—a combined 15 miles per gallon to feed its massive engine—Jeep provides an Eco Mode and Fuel Saver Technology to deliver more efficiency to make this SUV that much more desirable. Although there are many more models scheduled to review in 2017, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is already making a strong case as one of the most exciting automobiles to drive this year.

SUE'S PICKS FOR LOCAL SPIRITS

Parting Thoughts

34

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | February 2017

ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS

A

tlanta is flush with home-spun spirits. This isn't your grandpappy's moonshine, though. Distilleries like Old Fourth Distillery and American Spirit Whiskey are making us proud. This gin is one of my favorites, an impressive rich and smooth pour. Handcrafted Southern Dry Gin from Old Fourth Distillery is

distilled from organic Italian wheat and vapor infused with fresh botanicals: juniper berries from nearby Oakland Cemetery, grapefruit, lemon & orange peel, followed by cardamom, pink peppercorn, angelica root and coriander. Also on tap is Old Fourth Distillery Handcrafted Southern Vodka. They start with regionally grown sugar cane, a minimally refined turbinado. It is non-GMO, renewable, environmentally sound, gluten and pesticide free. Because they are located in an urban area they needed something we could convert to alcohol with no waste. New this year is Lawn Dart. Old Fourth Distillery created this limited edition ginger lemon liqueur from locally sourced ingredients for a slightly sweet, unbelievably refreshing spirit. Best served chilled and shaken. Old Fourth Distillery was started by childhood friends who decided to open Atlanta's first distillery since 1906, taking a neighborhood-centric, sustainable approach to creating the finest spirits available at any price.O4D uses sustainable non-GMO sugar cane to make its vodka, requiring less energy and creating zero waste. O4D's only byproduct is pure, distilled water. Their cane sugar base and hands-on approach creates a naturally gluten-free vodka with a soft, round mouthfeel and a subtle caramelized sugar aroma. Their Southern Dry Gin is vapor infused with only the finest fresh botanicals. Every bottle of O4D is made by hand in their 1100-square-foot distillery in the Old Fourth Ward. Three people create the fermentations, do the distillations, bottle, and package every drop of the signature vodka and gin. O4D uses a custom, handmade CARL copper still. The Buckhead boys at American Spirit Whiskey continue to create imaginative and well-honed sips. ASW Distillery combines a traditional Scottish-style twin copper pot still system with Southern flavor innovation, including grain-in distillation, to make bourbon, Atlanta’s first rye since Prohibition, and malt whiskies, plus Atlanta’s firstever fruit brandies. ASW Fiddler Bourbon is a very high wheat content bourbon, will be finished on Georgia oak heartwood harvested by ASW in Jackson County, Georgia ASW Resurgens Rye is Atlanta's first rye since Prohibition. ASW Armour & Oak Apple Brandy is Atlanta's first apple brandy, made using apples from Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge. Cheers to these hard-working local distillers!
