The Men's Issue JUNE 2024

Thanks to all of the Men

Welcome to our Men’s Issue! With Father’s Day around the corner, it’s a great time to celebrate the men who are important to us.

With this in mind, I’ve been reflecting on the impact of the men in my life. Of course, my father’s influence has been the most profound. His hard work, wacky sense of humor, and focus on family have helped shape me. My brother, Jon, also inspires me with his endless generosity and cre ative mind. My nephews, Sam and Noah, are so different— yet have both brought me intense joy and taught me about unconditional love. And I’m lucky to have several guy friends who are tried and true.

My dad works hard at everything he does, but he also loves to be goofy and he loves the outdoors. Above all, though, he values family. Whether playing Old Maid and getting intense joy out of passing the dreaded card off to me or one of my siblings, playing roofball, or hiking the switchbacks in the Grand Tetons, family was the focus. Spending time with family is still my father’s preferred activity at age 83. I am grateful for his commitment to our family even when times were tough.

In this issue, we are happy to share the stories of men in our community— fathers, surgeons, business owners—all making an impact in their own unique ways. We introduce two local businesses that offer services geared to men, and highlight Alexandra Chan, a local artist and novelist who shares her reflections on the impact of losing her father.

Children find strength and support from many people whose gifts of quality time, caring and meaningful words, and positive actions have a long-lasting effect. A father’s support has its own special impact. Think of your favorite memories of your father. Was his guidance profound for you? Were your adventures together exciting? Is he still supporting and encouraging you? Let your father or other important man in your life know how—and how much—he matters to you.

And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say thank you. Your positive impact is invaluable to the people who know and need you, as well as to the community around you.

Happy Father’s Day!  ANNE MOODEY,

Reconnecting To Our Wonder

In the Year of the Ram, 2015, Alexandra Chan’s 102-year-old father, Robert Earl, died. She writes about finding her way back to meaning and wellness, told through the lens of this devastating loss, in her new memoir, In the Garden Behind the Moon.

A Portsmouth-based painter, photographer, archaeologist, and author, Alexandra reconnects to family stories and ancestral wisdom to rebuild her life and resurrect her spirit. Readers will journey with her from China’s mainland, to the Jim Crow South, through the Pacific theater of WWII, to the present day. Alexandra’s original, full-color Chinese brush paintings throughout the book frame her messages with additional meaning. Published on May 28, 2024, the book is available locally at RiverRun Bookstore in Portsmouth and through online retailers. Alexandra's artwork is available at  risingphoenixarts.com . Learn more at alexandrachan.com

FAMILY WISDOM HELPS

CHAN WRITE HER WAY TO WELLNESS AND SHARE

UNIVERSAL TRUTHS

INSPIRED BY | ARTS + CULTURE 14
WHAT I LEARNED AFTER MY FATHER DIED IS THAT HE AND THE ELDERS I WAS RAISED AROUND NEVER CEASED TO WALK WITH WONDER.

WELCOME, ALEXANDRA! FATHER’S DAY PROMPTS REFLECTION ABOUT OUR FATHERS’ IMPACTS ON OUR LIVES. HOW DID WRITING THIS MEMOIR DEEPEN YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR FATHER?

I first intended to create a family keepsake—one that would capture all the adventures that had been hallmarks of my father’s life. Yet, the more I wrote about him, the more I realized I was writing about the human condition. I came to see my father as multi-dimensional, a perspective many of us can overlook with our parents. It became clear my story wasn’t for personal reflection anymore, but contained universal themes of ancestry and wisdom that I wanted to share with a broader audience.

AND IN WHAT WAYS DID WRITING ABOUT YOUR FATHER REVEAL NEW INSIGHTS ABOUT YOURSELF?

I got back in touch with myself. We’re all born with an innate sense of wonder and possibility, but we lose this as we get older. It gets tamped down. What I learned after my father died is that he and the elders I was raised around never ceased to walk with wonder. I call it “Old Chan Magic.” I started to remember and reconnect with that, and as I did, I became softer. Gentler. I was writing myself to wellness.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE READERS WILL TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR MEMOIR?

Nurture your creativity, in whatever form. Pursuing our passions infuses life with meaning. Be open to intuition—your own, or advice you receive from someone you trust. I discovered Chinese brush painting years earlier and completed many pieces during my father’s illness. I always saw it as a hobby. His final words urged me to sell my paintings, revealing a deeper purpose to my art. Many are now the essential framework to my book.

ED CONROY

Inquiries: keepingitcoastal@gmail.com

Meet the Maker: Ed Conroy

Keeping it Coastal with Custom-Designed, Marine-Themed Original Creations and Furniture

Ed Conroy and I sat down at his custom-built Kittery, Maine home to discuss his craft. Conroy’s work and influence permeate every aspect of his well-designed home, from the framing and roofing to the interior finish work.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH WOODWORKING?

Straight out of college, I moved to Pepperell, MA. Not knowing anyone, I flipped through the paper for something to do and found a woodworking class at Lawrence Academy. This newfound passion sparked a friendship with S-Bent Chair company foreman Ray Moore, who helped me build my first custom piece—a swinging cradle for my newborn son, Ben.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO MAKE?

I make many coastal-themed cutting and charcuterie boards with whales, mermaids, sharks, and other maritime insets. Those are fun, but I also enjoy crafting mission-style furniture, wall art, puzzles, and doing home carpentry projects. Drawing inspiration from all around, I will see something and think, ‘Oh, I can do that.’ Like a hand-built Nok hockey table, I am making for my grandsons. Creating functional pieces from unique hardwoods is a passion but sadly, many go unused. People tell me they’re too nice, so they remain on display.

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR WOOD?

A lot of my hardwood comes from local builders with scraps left over from larger projects or friends who have fallen trees. I am always happy to take some hardwood off your hands.

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOUR WORK?

Items are sold locally, but I am mostly commissioned for custom gifts, such as charcuterie boards or unique desks and furniture for local shops and offices.

HERITAGE HOME SERVICE MIXES BUSINESS WITH FAMILY TO BUILD A THRIVING COMPANY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

BUSINESS FAMILY STYLE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARLY STORRO PHOTOGRAPHY
LOCAL LIMELIGHT | HOME SERVICES 18
“IT’S

At the core of Heritage Home Service beats the heart of the Chartier family. In 1986, brothers Craig, Steve, and Jeff Chartier founded Heritage Plumbing and Heating with nothing but a pickup truck, a handful of tools, and a burning desire to start their own company.

He watched the company grow and experienced its tremendous impact on the family. “There is a higher level of understanding,” he says, “when you have built a business from scratch.”

With Brad’s brothers Zach and Ty added to the mix, this business is truly a family

BEEN A NEW HAMPSHIRE THING–AND A FAMILY THING–SINCE THE BEGINNING.”

Plumbing was in their blood and experience on their side, with years of working for their plumber grandfather, father, and uncles under their belts. “We had a dream,” Craig recalls. “We wanted to start something on our own.”

The tiny start-up business from Manchester, New Hampshire, would evolve into the successful Heritage Home Service of today. It is a flourishing family-run plumbing, heating, cooling, and electric company headquartered in Auburn. Their North Hampton location is one of six, serving New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Southern Maine.

After the founding brothers piloted the company to its success, the next generation took the helm in 2022, with Craig’s son Brad succeeding his dad as president. The younger Chartier has long been part of the business, and the transition to president was smooth, a natural passing of the torch from father to son.  Brad’s roots in the company run deep. As a boy, he delighted in the sight of his dad driving the Heritage truck.

affair. While Craig is officially retired, he remains involved with the company in an advisory capacity and cherishes the family dynamic. “I always had a vision of the company as a generational thing,” he says. “That’s why we chose the name Heritage.”

Running a family business poses unique challenges, but Craig feels the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. For this patriarch, the value of having a family business is creating a caring foundation. This foundation extends not just to family members but to employees and customers. “It is an overall mindset,” he explains. This business prioritizes caring about people over income.”

Brad considers it a great privilege to follow in his father’s footsteps and treasures the working relationship he shares with his dad. Mutual respect abounds between the two, both personally and professionally. “My dad is a dynamic leader,” he says. “It’s been easy for me to follow him because he really is a quality human being, a good boss and a great dad.”

“I ALWAYS HAD A VISION OF THE COMPANY AS A GENERATIONAL THING. THAT’S WHY WE CHOSE THE NAME HERITAGE.”

Craig smiles at his son’s heartfelt words and adds a few of his own. “Work is such a big part of life,” he says. “We spend so much time in it. Sharing that with your children in a productive and healthy way is a huge blessing.”

Heritage Home Service shows the same respect for its customers as the family members do for each other. The business does residential work only and limits services to existing homes rather than new construction. Heritage prides itself on working directly with its homeowner customers.

Heritage is committed to prioritizing clean air, water, and energy services. The company aims to maintain comfort, improve health indoors, and lessen environmental impact. To this end, Heritage offers water and air testing and filtration, ductwork cleaning, radon mitigation systems, and energy-efficient heating and pump systems. As president, Brad strives to keep abreast of the new technology while keeping environmental concerns in mind by “staying on the greener side of things.”

Despite the company’s expansion to other states, Craig has not forgotten his New Hampshire origins. Chartiers have been born and bred here for generations, so they chose to start and build their business in their home state. For Craig, it was an obvious choice. “It’s been a New Hampshire thing–and a family thing–since the beginning.”

Father,Surgeon, Gardener... and Dreamer

DR. ANTHONY WILSON–ON THINKING BIG AND CREATING EXCELLENCE

Dr. Anthony Wilson may originally hail from Philadelphia, but today, he’s well-known on the New Hampshire Seacoast. When he’s not tending his gardens or spending time with his kids, he changes the lives of local residents for the better through his plastic surgery practice.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE, AW PLASTIC SURGERY. WITH SUCH A RANGE OF PROCEDURES OUT THERE—WHAT DRAWS PEOPLE TO YOU?

From a surgical perspective, I’m pretty specialized; I do a lot of facelifts, eyelids, tummies, and breasts. Believe it or not, chest surgery is pretty common with male patients if they feel they have an enlarged chest area and there’s a substantial number of men who do eyelids and facelifts.

HOW OFTEN DO PEOPLE FIND THEIR PROCEDURE IS LIFE-CHANGING?

We just had this happen yesterday with a patient who had a neck lift procedure performed. The neck area is often a defining feature for many people as they age or gain weight. While eighty percent of her transformation was the surgery, the remaining twenty percent was how she presented herself as a more confident human being afterward. Her new energy now says, “I’m happy with myself.”

HOW ABOUT LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN GARDENING AND GROWING ROSES?

I’ve been an avid gardener for about ten years. It is a passion of mine. I would define myself as a father, a surgeon, and a gardener. It’s a short season here, but research shows that working with soil is excellent for mental health, and working in nature is good for overall sanity. I get a lot of satisfaction from gardening, and that drives me.

ALEXIS PAQUETTE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMIE MERCURIO
ARTICLE BY
HOUSE CALL | BEAUTY 22

Then, being a parent, I have three lovely children, so I spend a lot of time doing parenting activities, like sports and other things with them. And I am also into cooking and, weirdly, baking. Whether it’s weird or not, the staff certainly like it! Almost everything I enjoy is some form of art. A beautiful garden, to me, is a form of art. Baking and cooking are art forms—I love the presentation of it all and the flavors.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN CREATIVE?

Yes! I am very much a dreamer. Growing up, many people would ask, “Why do you always dream so big? Why not tone it down?” But it pays off to think big, think about the next steps, and not keep yourself in a box. I always say, “Don’t be afraid— what’s the worst thing that can happen?” Creativity and aesthetics drive me as a person, and I think they support me in what I do professionally as a surgeon.

WHAT’S AN EXAMPLE OF DREAMING BIG THAT HAS PAID OFF FOR YOU?

From a professional satisfaction standpoint, we’ve built a center of excellence for breast cancer reconstruction here in Portsmouth. That was always a goal. My breast surgeon colleague and I thought, “Why build a program like this if patients will just go to Boston for care?” However, we discovered that if you create a positive experience and deliver unparalleled knowledge to treat and produce a healthy outcome, people will come from Boston to see you.

Almost everything I enjoy is some form of art. A beautiful garden, to me, is a form of art. Baking and cooking are forms of art.

At Work and At Home Style Personalized

JOANIE DICKINSON AND TEAM AT J. HILBURN STYLE FOR HOW YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE

When asked how he met Joanie Dickinson, master menswear stylist and owner of the J. Hilburn Stylist Studio in Portsmouth, Darin Roark, President and COO of Wentworth Douglass Hospital, describes wandering around town after just moving to the Seacoast. “I was out exploring and stumbled upon the shop, and the next thing I know,” Roark continues, “We are chatting like old friends, and Joanie thanks me for what I do and offers a warm hug.” That sums up how Dickinson makes anyone who crosses her path feel, whether at her studio on the Vaughan Mall or through her work as a longtime Portsmouth Rotarian.

After sitting down with Dickinson to learn about J. Hilburn, it is clear that she is not just selling clothes to the ‘man about town.’ Sure, she offers custom-made menswear for any occasion, from a tuxedo to a T-shirt and everything in between. But, Dickinson explains, “Our sole objective is to make men look and feel freaking awesome and exude confidence in whatever they choose to wear.”

It requires a leap of faith and a lot of trust to let someone dress you, but after 14-plus years styling clients from here and afar, Dickinson and her team of four earn that trust. They invest in learning who you are and what your story is and then set about working their magic–a process that makes Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother look like a shoddy tailor.

Fellow Rotarian and local orthopedic surgeon Dr. Akhil Sastry understands the importance of first impressions in his line of work, which is one reason he initially met with J. Hilburn. He describes his first impressions of the experience: “Instantly, I knew this was a

special place. Not because of the wonderful fabrics and patterns, but because they spent time getting to know me, my personality, and what attire works for my professional setting.” In fact, after admiring his colorful shirt buttons, Sastry showed me how the shirt cuff on his left sleeve is cut slightly wider to allow room for the watch or Whoop he wears daily. This attention to detail and customer care is signature J. Hilburn.

Alex Rigazio, owner of The City, a local beer and wine chain, is a J. Hilburn fan for another reason. At 6’7”, Rigazio struggled to find clothes that fit. Tired of compromising on style, Rigazio made his first appointment for a suit a year ago and now has a wardrobe of shirts and pants, including jeans that perfectly fit his tall frame. He praises Dickinson for listening to his work and lifestyle needs while pushing him outside his comfort zone. What he likes most about J. Hilburn: “They make sure the clothes fit before I leave, and this takes all the hassle out of shopping.” All J. Hilburn items are 100% guaranteed to fit; if not, they will remake or return your purchase.

For Dickinson’s busy clients, convenience is vital. “My time is limited, and I am often in a rush,” explains everyone’s favorite local restaurateur, Massimo Morgia. He adds that “Part of the fun is sitting down with Graham (his stylist from Dickinson’s team) in my own space and custom designing a shirt–from the fabric to the collar and buttons, and then in two weeks, this perfectly fitted shirt arrives at my doorstep.”

With more than 200 shirting fabrics, 150 suiting and sport coat fabrics, 80 lining choices, and over 250 pant and knit fabric selections, not to mention choosing buttons, cuffs, collars, and yes, even stitching, having a stylist to guide you through the endless combinations is a necessity because as Dickinson notes, “Most men don’t like to shop or know what to wear.” And this is why J. Hilburn has created a flawless customer experience from measurement to delivery. After an initial appointment at your home, office, or studio, you can access a personalized web portal with your confirmed measurements. From here, you

“Our sole objective is to make men look and feel freaking awesome and exude confidence in whatever they choose to wear.”

can view your “closet” and shop for new pieces or, like Massimo and others, opt to have a stylist come to you.

Your stylist becomes an advisor/therapist/best friend. Just ask Attorney John Bosen of Bosen & Associates, who started working with Dickinson 10 years ago initially for his wedding tux. Now he confesses, “Joanie pretty much dresses me for life–inside and outside of work,” adding, “I want her feedback on everything because it’s easy. I tell her what I need, and she puts together suggestions for me.”

That all sounds amazing and expensive, you are probably thinking. While not a discount store, J.Hilburn eliminates the distribution and retail channel. Unlike today’s trendy “fast fashion,” every item is built to last and made to order, reducing waste and the environmental footprint. So, while you will spend a little more than a mall store brand purchase, you are investing in a guaranteed-to-fit, fully custom-designed-for-you piece that will last a lifetime.  Best of all, Dickinson and her style gurus will make you feel like a Prince and look “freaking awesome.” That is priceless.
