W
elcome to March everybody. We are springing into March with an election on the horizon and one with a huge range of candidates to choose from. Thanks to the new electoral rules, each electoral boundary in Ipswich will be granted two councillors with the idea that this will help to eliminate corruption and encourage closer community connections and communication. As with every change, the shift in government has created a feeling of hope, tinged with wariness as residents prepare to walk down a path, they believe they have trudged before. It’s high time that Ipswich received a council it can trust, so we can all get on with building a magnificent city. Here’s hoping come March 28. We have provided a special election spread that allows you a good look at each candidate with his or her corresponding division. For all the details, head to our website to view each candidate and the key platforms they are running on. In tastier news, LifeStyle Queensland has brought you a food feature, catching you up on the top spots in Ipswich to nab a hot coffee and a sweet treat. If the cover alone doesn’t have you salivating, flick to page 6 to really tickle your taste buds. We’ve made sure to collect together a list of delicious all sorts to suit whatever vibe you’re chasing. Whether you’re craving a hearty meal with rustic charm, a delicate morsel for morning tea or an outrageous serving of Wonker-esque madness, we’re sure you won’t have to go far in Ipswich to get the goods.
Don’t worry though, we haven’t forgotten the holy trinity of balance, healthy eating and the divine effects of getting your hands dirty. If you’re a weekend gardener or a diehard green thumb, our inspiration for a tropical fruit salad garden is sure to be up your alley. If you are a gardener of professional proportions, please write into LifeStyle Queensland and offer any tips or tricks you might have that could help people build a long lasting and blossoming fruit garden. Finally, being a monthly magazine, we have the luxury of stretching out our celebration of important dates and, especially in this case, it is entirely justified. International Women’s Day falls on March 8, but the idea it encapsulates and the movement it inspires requires far more than a day. For our part, we have given the nod to all that is fantastically feminine. This everything from drag superstars, to RAAF legends, from helpful hints for powerhouse mums to financial advice for young women making their way in the world and even some wisdom from retirees on the road. And while it’s almost impossible to celebrate every woman in one issue, we’ve made sure to include some giveaways that will make every woman feel her finest. As always there is a glorious collection of prizes waiting for you inside. Books and movie tickets are all up for grabs, all you need to do is head to the website and fill out the competition form. Good luck! Luciana

Cher all in Prada! Images supplied by Sydney Drag Queens
LifeStyle Queensland magazine sat down with Prada Clutch to talk about her latest show Les Divas and why she’s thriving in drag
LQ: What is the Les Divas show? PC: It is 12 divas impersonated by three drag queens singing songs people love and can sing along to. It’s a hoot! It’s grand, it’s fabulous, and it’s over the top! LQ: Who is Prada Clutch and where did she come from? PC: She’s fabulous, she’s excited, she loves audiences, she loves to perform. Everything Prada does is for the people. She’s always trying to make people happy and change people’s perceptions of drag. 13 years ago I didn’t have a drag name. I wanted to be classy. I was having a chat with my cousin and I said “well what about Chanel?” and she said “I think you’re classier than Chanel, why don’t you go Prada?” But Prada what? Prada bag, Prada duffel bag… Prada Clutch? A lot of people carry on and they go Prada Crotch and Prada Crutch but it’s not- it’s Prada Clutch. And 8

I often say “clutch” as I like to use one when I’m riding stick. LQ: How did it feel when you first performed? PC: I did a play at university where I had to play a drag queen and that night I went to Oxford Street in drag. I jumped up on the stage and started miming a song and I thought, “Oh god I’m terrible at this- I’d rather just sing!” I grabbed the microphone off the drag queen who was hosting the talent contest and I started singing. She yelled “STOP THE MUSIC!” She said – “you can sing” and she started it again and I sang the whole song. From there I would just go around Oxford street and sing a song here and there, entered a few drag competitions and did quite well in them and then next thing you know I was working everywhere. It’s different because I sing and there are not many of us that do. When I came onto the scene,
there was really only Courtney Act and she was quite successful doing all her wonderful work. Then I came on and started belting out tunes and people went “oh my goodness.” From that I started working everywhere. I ended up wanting to bring huge shows of fabulous quality to people and that’s how I ended up touring about three or four years ago. LQ: Did you have a drag inspiration growing up, or did that come into it later on? PC: As a young boy I started singing when I was eight years old and my voice didn’t break till I was fifteen, so I was singing all the powerhouse diva songs. I love Dusty Springfield, Whitney
Houston, Celine Dion- all these divas from way back- little did I know that was in the path of where I ended up going. LQ: What is it that drives your energy? PC: People often say “Thank you so much for coming, we’re going through a bit of a tough time at the moment and it’s just been fantastic to forget about what’s going on in my life for a little bit”. They are thanking me but I’m thanking them because without them I don’t have the opportunity to do what I love. Without people coming to my shows, I don’t have a stage to perform on.
They are thanking me but I’m thanking them because without them I don’t have the opportunity to do what I love
LQ: What has been your favourite moment on stage? PC: It actually happened off stage. I had a young boy come up to me after a show. He was all done up in drag, only about 11, so excited he couldn’t speak. It was in a very rural town in Victoria where people said to me, “Oh god, be careful going there.” His brother was there too with a dress on. And I said, “Oh you’re all dressed up!” and he said “Yeah, I don’t want my brother to feel uncomfortable so I put a dress on too.” That 13 year old probably doesn’t realise the impact he is having on his younger brother. It is so nice to see that kids don’t care about dressing up or what’s wrong or right, they just care about each other, which is quite beautiful. LQ: Has anything ever gone hilariously wrong? PC: I walked out to an opening number one time many, many years ago, saying “Hello ladies and gentleman, welcome everybody!” and fell flat on my face. But it was a great thing! It was very early in my career and I was nervous as all get out, performing to 500 people. I didn’t know where I was going to go with it but then after I fell, the audience immediately fell in love with me. I said “Oh my goodness I’m used to working in Oxford Street and we don’t have big stages like this” and it all came out of me. The audience feels sorry for you, but you’ve got them for the rest of the show. Another time I walked out after having eaten a bit too much overseas. We had to do some last minute repair with feathers over where the zip wouldn’t quite close and I walked out saying “Sorry everyone, I spent a little time in America and now I’ve started to look like them!” It’s all just a bit of fun but the audience can relate, it makes you human.
L: What’s your ultimate creative dream? PC: For anyone who has idols in their life, performing with them is the dream. Mine would be a big concert, hosted by me starring Cher, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross, Celine Dion- doing duets with them all. It would be spectacular.
I first started, RuPaul wasn’t on Netflix or Stan but now that it is, people are relating to it straight away and they come and see the show because they are excited
about drag. People aren’t scared of drag anymore. Now you’re seeing the realness of it all, the challenges and the struggles. People can relate to it.
Catch Prada Clutch and her line-up of Divas at their upcoming show Prada’s Priscillas at the Toowoomba Empire Theatre, Friday April 3. Head to pradaspriscillas.com/ to grab your tickets now!
LQ: Priscilla was ground breaking back in its day, what’s ground breaking in drag now? PC: Priscilla has played such a big part in drag. It is iconic. But RuPauls drag race has brought out a whole different league of drag, it’s a whole different world. RuPaul has made it so mainstream that people in these rural towns come up and say “I watched RuPauls drag race, why aren’t you on the show?” It is an extraordinary platform that RuPaul has made and is particularly exceptional in how it has opened peoples minds. Is there anything you would change? I don’t think so, if I changed anything I would not have met my husband and not be where I am today. I have always had the support of my family and without them wouldn’t have been able to achieve what I have done over my career. Where has the job taken you? I have travelled all over Australia and have worked and deployed all over the world. I have been given some incredible opportunities, career growth and educational opportunities. I have some unique experiences rarely found in civilian life. How much has changed during your time working?

he sat down with us to have a chat about how she got started and why she still loves her work three decades on. What led you to the role? My father and grandfather were both in the military and listening to stories of their experiences always remained with me. I wanted a career within the RAAF and a lifestyle that was exciting and offered opportunites for travel and personal growth. Generations of my family served their country and I wanted to do the same. Was it always a dream to work in your role, or have you learned to love it? I always wanted to do something a little different from my friends and military life always appealed to me. I joined the RAAF originally 10

as a Supplier and then after nine years changed jobs and became a Clerk. I was working with some inspiring Doctors and Nurses and listening to their incredible stories and from there my interest in Nursing came to the forefront. With the encouragement and support of my family and the RAAF I completed a Nursing degree. The RAAF allowed me to achieve my ambitions and supported me through the transition from Airmen to Officer. What stands out as the most significant moment of your career? My deployment to Afganistan in 2017. I worked with some extrodinary medical personnel from all over the world all coming together to provide high quality health care. It was rewarding but also very challenging at the same time.
Which aspect do you love best, and what do you find the most challenging? I love being part of a unique community that encourages personal growth and challenges you to become the best version of yourself. I have worked with some incredible people and the best part is the lifelong friends I have made along the way. The most challenging part of military life is being away from family and friends. You can never prepare yourself for the challenges and personal sacrifices inherent to Air Force life.
When I first joined the RAAF it wasn’t anticipated that you would deploy overseas in support of overseas operations. However, the new generation of Airforce Personnel will most likely deploy not long after completing all of their initial employment training courses. This is part of military life and everyone who deploys should be proud to be part of keeping Australia safe. What advice would you give to women looking to follow in your footsteps? If you are thinking about a career in the RAAF, I would definitely recommend it. You will be challenged and experience many things most civilians never get the opportunity to do. You will be encouraged to strive for excellence and live by a set of values that will follow you through to civilian life. What is next for you? The RAAF has been a major part of my life for the past 30 years and I have had a fabulous career. The opportunities and memorable experiences I have been given will last a lifetime. By the end of the year I will be transitioning to the Air Force Reserves so I will be able to spend more time with my family. I am proud to have served my country and take pride in knowing I belong to a group who continue to look after Australia’s National interests.
The RAAF has been a major part of my life for the past 30 years and I have had a fabulous career. “

DEFENCE IN BRIEF
Amberley RAAF transport desalination plant to assist drought affected Norfolk Island On 7 February 2020, the Royal Australian Air Force delivered an Australian Army water desalination plant to the community of Norfolk Island in response to water scarcity and drought conditions.
M
uch like after the fires on Kangaroo Island, the Defence’s desalination plant became crucial to providing clean drinking water for the island’s residents. Some homes on the island were in danger of running out of water as early as mid February, with dwindling supplies in water tanks their only source. A spokesperson for the island was quoted as saying that most residents rely on 30,000 litre tanks which hold enough water for roughly three months. As Norfolk Island hasn’t experienced meaningful rain since October last year, these tanks soon dried up and an alternative water source was required. Using the C-17A Globemaster aircraft from No. 36 Squadron, the desalination plant was flown the 1,400 kilometre journey and unloaded at Norfolk Island Airport. The Globemaster aircraft is well suited to these types of missions,
able to carry large loads and can land on short and semi-prepared airfields. An Air Force Mobile Air Load Team was on board the aircraft to assist with the unloading and delivery of the desalination plant.

The Engine: Pratt & Whitney F135 – The F135 is the world’s most advanced fighter engine, delivering more than 40,000 lbs. of thrust and unmatched advances in safety, design, performance, and reliability
The desalination and water purification system can produce 100,000L of drinking water a day, drawing water from the surrounding ocean. The plant, which has been operating since mid February and was only designed to run for three weeks, will now undergo an assessment to see how the island will continue with it’s water management and if the Defence plant is still required. The CSIRO is working on the island to construct a water generation program that will contribute towards water production and monitoring to ensure the island is not left without water once the RAAF departs.

e are all lucky enough to know a woman, and some of us, even luckier to be one. If you know someone worth celebrating, make sure to let them know this International Women’s Day that you are proud to join the fight for women’s equality across the globe. International Women’s Day is an annual celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women as well as a way to shine a spotlight on
areas within gender equality that deserve our attention and efforts. International Women’s Day 2020 is built around the concept of collective individualism, an idea that suggests that although we may only be one person, every action, conversation and behaviour has an impact on the world at large. It is up to us to decide whether it is a positive one that will propel the lives of women forward. Seeing oneself as an individual in the world
can be daunting, but knowing the power that is possible from individual action, is exhilarating. The 2020 campaign includes a hashtag to help share and support each other in the fight for gender equality and to highlight collective action at work. #eachforequal is a call out that promotes gender equality in the boardroom, in the government, in the media, in the sports arena, in the work place and in levels of health and wealth. #eachforequal is a reminder of how far we have

ARE YOU SICK OF PULLING YOUR HAIR OUT OVER FOOD THAT ONLY GETS BROUGHT HOME TO YOU AGAIN? FUSSY EATERS TURNING YOUR MORNING INTO ARGUMENTS AND CHAOS? NOTHING QUITE YELLS ‘BACK TO SCHOOL’ LIKE PACKING A LUNCHBOX.
W
ith school well and truly kicking off across Queensland, the daily pack is probably starting to feel like the chore you live to regret. The balance between packing
what you think is right and what your children will actually eat, is a skill most of us are yet to master. Here are 8 tips to help get you through the next 8 weeks.
Get creative. Begin Monday
Leftovers are your friend. It’s
no lie that children love leftovers. Make a double batch of dinner and you’ve just found yourself an extra 20 minutes in the morning. Depending on your child’s school, they can often be reheated or stored in an insulated container to keep warm. Spaghetti bolognaise, stir fry and soups are great options when the wind picks up!
4
Develop healthy habits.
Involving your children in the conversation of what healthy options are, allows for them to learn and develop a sense of ownership towards their health. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, “An alarming 25 per cent of Australian children are classified as overweight or obese.” Speaking positively to your children about healthy foods and role modelling balanced eating is the first step in helping kids develop a healthy relationship with food.
5
Have the right tools. What
seems like a small part in the process, is actually one of the most significant. It is important that you choose a lunchbox that works for you and
*Also, Special Rates for Defence members
your child, can store a variety of containers and will keep the food fresh with an icepack. Ensure that all containers are easy to open and include a spoon or fork where needed.
6
Choose nature. Opt for food
options that are as close to their natural state as possible. This will limit the amount of processed foods in your child’s diet, helping to increase their nutrient intake. Two of the biggest contributors to obesity are over-representation of junk food and lack of fruit and vegetables. Aim for a varied lunchbox full of healthy, colourful food!
7
Avoid additives. Rashes,
headaches, hyperactivity, irritability and stomach upsets are only a few signs that your child has reacted to an additive. MSG, colouring and preservatives are the most common problem additives, yet are all highly represented in foods advertised for lunchboxes. Always read the label and a general rule of thumb is if you don’t recognise an ingredient, don’t eat it.
8
Drink water. Hydration is key
for learning, activity and immunity. It can be hard for a child to remember to drink water so having a water bottle available is a great way to encourage it. Adding some fruit slices or diluted juice can help fussy drinkers.

Saving For
❖ Words by Taylah Antoniolli

House Deposit
Whether you want to break out of the rent cycle or you are ready to move out of home, saving for a house deposit can seem overwhelming. But rest assured, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, you just have to stick it out.
H
ere are a few ideas you can use to make saving just a little easier. Whether you are looking to buy in the next six months or the next six years, one of these tips is sure to help you out.
GENERAL SAVING TIPS Tackle your Spending First Go through your monthly budget and look at what you are spending your money on. Factor in everything, including gym memberships, Netflix subscriptions, app subscriptions and even your daily coffees. Ask yourself, is this a necessary cost or can it be eliminated?
Sticking to Your Budget Now that you have deciphered your monthly costs, it is time to set a budget! Think about fun and social events as well, so you have a bit of flexibility. If you don’t use it during the month, just pop the leftovers into your savings
account. When you have decided on a final budget, get strict with yourself and make sure you stick to it!
Extra Revenue Are there any ways you can make some extra cash? This may just be taking on an extra shift or adding
a part-time job to your schedule. If you are creative or have a side hustle, cash this in and start selling some of your products. You may even have items or clothing pieces lying around that you no longer need, so post them up on Gumtree, eBay or Facebook to earn some extra money.
PROPERTY
WAYS TO SAVE WHILE RENTING Are you currently renting and attempting to add to your savings each week? Here are some ways you can maximise your savings account and minimise your weekly spending.
• Get a housemate – have you got a spare room that is collecting dust? Find a friend to move in, or post an ad on flatmates.com. Not only will it help you divvy up the household costs, but it will also help you share around the household chores. • Forgo the expensive lunches – meal prepping, making packed lunches and batch cooking are sure-fire ways to save money. You can make your lunch at home for as little as $3 a day, as opposed to spending $15-20 at your local café/takeaway shop. • Create a mood board – having your dream home on display in a high traffic area of your house may just be that extra push to help you keep saving. • Declutter – go through all your belongings and what you still need and what can go. Those unnecessary items can then be sold on Facebook, Gumtree or eBay. • Ditch your morning coffee – skip your daily barista-made latte and make it yourself at home. You will be surprised how quickly that $3-4 each day can add up. • Get walking – ditch your car and petrol costs and start walking, riding or catching public transport more. • Stay on track – it can be hard to stick to saving, especially when those unexpected costs arise. However, it is extremely important to stick it out and keep chipping away at your goal. Persistence is key!

CONQUERING THE PINEAPPLE (for the very patient)
Despite their spiky attitudes, pineapples are amazingly easy to grow!
How to grow Start
with a cut off crown of a pineapple, making sure to remove all fruit flesh until it is clean and dry. Leave the crown for a day or two to thoroughly dry out. Fill a pot with a rich fertilised soil, and plant the crown so that the exposed white nub is buried.

How to care for Water
regularly and fertilise every eight weeks. Cover any sprouting fruit flowers with an open ended plastic bag to deter flying foxes and other pesky fruit pinchers!
BLOOMING THE PASSIONFRUIT
How to care for sure not to water your yellow friend too much, the strong, tough leaves mean that there is little evaporation. You won’t need to transplant it, as they grow very well in pots. But make sure your pot is deep and wide enough to accommodate the fruit. Wait and watch, and in about a year, your pineapple will arrive!

You can grow citrus from seeds, but as many varieties take almost seven years to produce a crop, you are better off choosing a seedling and getting closer to that juice.

❖ Words by Tim Rule | PA Hotel
Last month I mentioned that Tap'd Bar at the Prince Alfred Hotel in Booval is focusing on supporting more local Queensland craft beer and this month is no different.
First off the cab this month is from Helios Brewing on Brisbane’s south side with their Limited Release Session Hazy Pale Ale. This hazy pale ale has a punchy fruit driven nose from a mix of New Zealand and American hops to start the show off right. The beer pours a hazy burnt orange colour with the pithy citrus and resinous hops gripping the palate, and finishes bone dry with moderate bitterness. This is a great, well rounded pale ale. Next is a sneaky mid-strength ale from our
friends at the Gold Coast Balter Brewing. Balter’s Captain Sensible (such a great name) balances refined malt undertones against vivacious hop notes to round out a full taste and mouthfeel that defies its mid-strength nature. Perfect for those who like to keep a lid on it, but still want to knock back a couple. And finally there is nothing more truly unique, a Cream Soda sour ale from the innovative minds at Currumbin Valley Brewing. This beer tastes exactly as the name describes - a tart ale with a subtle pop of vanilla and citrus along with a creamy twist. This is a truly unique beer experience in my opinion. I have tried many sour ales in my time and yet these pioneering brewers still seem to find new ways to excite and impress. A big bravo goes out to all The Queensland brewers out there, keep doing what you’re doing! These three beers and many more are available now at Tap’d Bar at the Prince Alfred Hotel so don’t miss them. Cheers! Tim
Crunchy Apple And Chicken Salad INGREDIENTS
METHOD
• 4 chicken thighs, skin on • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, grass fed butter or ghee • ½ savoy cabbage, finely shredded • ¼ red cabbage, finely shredded • ½ red onion, finely sliced • 1 green apple, cored and cut into matchsticks • 1 handful of mint leaves, roughly torn • 1 handful of flat-leaf parsley leaves, roughly torn • 100g (1 cup) pecans, toasted and roughly chopped
Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel and season the skin generously with salt.
Avocado Dressing • 1 avocado • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar • finely grated zest and juice of ½ lemon • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 18
LifeStyle | March 2020
Heat your preferred cooking fat in a large heavy-based frying pan over medium-high heat. Place the chicken thighs into the pan, skinside down, and fry undisturbed for 7-8 minutes, or until the skin has rendered down and is golden brown and crispy. Flip over and cook for a further 3-4 minutes, or until completely cooked through. Transfer to paper towel to drain off any excess fat and leave to cool, then cut into thick strips. To make the dressing, scoop the avocado flesh into a bowl and roughly mash it with a fork, then add the remaining ingredients and whisk until thick and creamy. When you are ready to serve, place the shredded cabbage, onion, apple, herbs, and pecans in a large bowl and toss well.
Spread the salad across a serving platter, top with chicken pieces and dollop over the avocado dressing.
RECIPE FROM THE FAST LOW-CARB KICKSTART PLAN BY LUKE HINES

GOOD TO KNOW: This salad is a great, simple base and is really versatile, so feel free to swap out the chicken for any of your other favourite proteins.

THE
LI G HTHOUSE
The Oscars may be over, but that doesn’t signal the end films that should be on your radar.
F
loating around are some recent releases that may not have made it to the Oscars, but definitely deserve more attention than they’ve received. In the spotlight for March is The Lighthouse.
of everyone’s comprehension of how long it’s actually been. The apocalyptic drone of the island’s ancient foghorn is near-constant,
not offering any bookend to the day, and foreshadowing doom at all times. The monotony is only broken up by excessive drinking, and mysterious visions neither of which do anything to clear either the wickies’ or our heads. Paranoia sets in and both men are faced with the task of filling time with someone they don’t trust and who they can’t understand. However, this loose grip on reality is offset by the elegant manner in which the film is photographed. Shot in black and white and in a claustrophobic 1:19 ratio and black and white, The Lighthouse is more reminiscent of early
Hollywood talkies than a modern psychological horror. Each frame is filled with meticulously choreographed light and action – often the expression on Willem Defoe’s underlit face speaks more than any ranting sea-curse could. But the language is still something to marvel at. Though at times difficult to follow, it’s a mix of thoroughly researched, authentic 1890’s sea-speak, full of brine and cockle shells, which is often punctuated by fart-jokes. The increasing strangeness leads to some intentionally absurd moments, and laughter at these points is a welcome release from the mounting tension and anxiety. At times disturbing, and incomprehensible the film is part Edgar Allen Poe, part H.P. Lovecraft and often Captain Ahab. Featuring some of the most striking imagery in memory, and probably some of the best monologues that are sure to live on as acting class staples, Robert Egger’s The Lighthouse works hard to bring weirdness into the mainstream without being obnoxious about it.
Set on a (you don’t say) lighthouse in 1890’s Nova Scotia, Robert Egger’s latest horror film The Lighthouse is a dark, wet seamen’s nightmare – reality unravelling within a wild typhoon that pits the sanity of Robert Pattinson against that of Willem Defoe. The actors play two “wickies”, lighthouse keepers assigned to tend the lonely rock for four weeks. This time-frame becomes important as their daily routine slowly stretches the boundaries

Hepworth’s particular appeal lies in how she is able to capture the wildest twists of imagination delivered through raw charactersin this case women from different generations who are genuine enough to be your mother, sister or aunt. Between the drama of their lives emerges a strong bond, born of warmth, compassion and generosity, a vision of salvaged suburbia, a glimpse of possible utopia in an otherwise cliched cul de sac and a refreshing testament to the power of women put together rather than pitted against one another.

Holidays at Home v Words
by Author, speaker and coach Di Riddell
HOLIDAY, HOLIDAY, HOLIDAY AT HOME! THIS IS THE CATCH CRY IN AUSTRALIA AT THE MOMENT AFTER SEVERE DROUGHT, DEVASTATING SUMMER FIRES FOLLOWED BY FLOODS.
‘H
oliday at home and support areas that have been affected by grief and loss’, has been promoted at every opportunity by all levels of government and tourism in every state. That just happened to fall into place with my partner’s plan to take me caravanning. Now don’t get me wrong, I like the outdoors and short trips but going further afield was way out of my comfort zone for an urban dweller from Brisbane. After coming up to three months on the road going through outback areas, stopping in small country towns and seeing how they have diversified to encourage visitors, I am surviving and thriving. The pride in country town folk and what they are doing in their town is a joy to experience. Going through western New South Wales one day, we stopped at Lightning Ridge. What an amazing place full of surprises, characters and opals. The gem in our stay was visiting The Black
Hand, a formerly working opal mine. The owner had gone down 60 metres where half way down he had widened a spot out for his cuppa and lunch. One day he picked up his eating knife and started scraping in the sandstone around him. Over years he created something close to 200 carvings in the rock, they are absolutely phenomenal.

If the fly swat is ineffective use what ever is at hand – a sheer food cover about a metre square over my head did the trick. It may not be the height of fashion, but I am finding bush style is governed by circumstance.
Each state has different highlights and we are still discovering them but travel to each and every one requires a list of things you can’t live without.
A light plastic poncho is a marvel in the rain for hitching up and the little things you need to do when packing up. And a torch and a supply of batteries for when…and ‘when’ will happen more times that you could imagine.
Mentally, pack your sense of humour - you will need it. Just when you think everything is going well. It doesn’t. Like doing the washing, hanging it out bush style to dry and the line collapses dropping all in red dirt. I laugh in retrospect; on the day it was a melt-down of gigantic proportions. Your fly swat is imperative. After posting a shot of an afternoon glass of wine, I realised I had the fly swat in my other hand. It has
My ‘touch of grace’ is having a loo brush, disinfectant to clean bush toilets and loo paper- this all means leaving them as I would
like to find them. Some weary traveller or one in need will appreciate it. Did I mention patience and tenacity? Pack lots of that. I am loving meeting people from all walks of life, hearing about their travels in our magnificent country, having a drink in the local pub in the evening and seeing the diversity in country towns. And always, finding such beauty in every aspect of nature that we come across. At this point we have passed through parts of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia yet so much more to see. Would I promote holidays at home? I certainly would.
