e’ve already experienced the hottest day of the year thus far, nearing triple digits in mid-May in some parts of the Bay Area—and summer is still a month away. We are also in one of the hottest residential real estate markets we have seen in quite some time; and commercial development continues to expand, making way for new tech companies and more start-ups to add to the growth of Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, homeowners are in full swing with remodels, additions, and decorating; and many fine resources and products for those projects are found right here within the pages of Lifestyle Resources Magazine. If you’re considering a new look for your yard, enjoy Cindie Farley’s article

about Cevan Forristt. Cevan, who is a master of both hardscape and landscape design, creates unique settings that incorporate reclaimed materials into the design. And although water conservation is currently on all our minds more than ever, Cevan’s work has always been inherently drought resistant. Read more and view his projects on page 18. Also in this issue, I had the pleasure of interviewing business owner Victoria Collom of Flite Logistics, who is an advocate for private jet travel. The service her company provides its clients is done with the utmost care, and Victoria puts safety first and foremost. Next, professional ballroom dancer Cheryl Burke, also known as one of the Dancing With the Stars professionals, opens up about her path from childhood to where she is today. Cheryl, having just turned 30, may have some new products on the market under the Cheryl Burke Brand in the very near future. And last but not least, get a glimpse inside the ultraluxurious Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach. An easy flight from the Bay Area and minutes from John Wayne Airport, it allows you to feel as if you are a world away.

CEVAN FORRISTT MASTER OF HARDSCAPE 18
LIFESTYLE RESOURCES
If you’ve ever considered forming a “private country,” Cevan Forristt is the man to make it happen. At least within the boundaries of your own yard. He has an eye for what will allow you to escape into that paradise of your dreams, and he knows how to get you there—and the journey will undoubtedly be an adventure in itself. LIFESTYLE RESOURCES
19
“Gardens should transport you!” he says with the conviction of a Zen master who is gleeful in his practice. Forristt has been working his magic in Silicon Valley from the time he took his first real job at 18. Born in Palo Alto and raised in Menlo Park, he was hired by a cofounder of one of the tech companies that gave Silicon Valley its name. Forristt remained with him for 14 years, living on the family’s large property and overseeing and maintaining everything but the pool.
20
LIFESTYLE RESOURCES
He refers to that time as his “art boot camp.” It put him through college as well, and he graduated from San Jose State with a degree in ceramic arts and art history. During that time, he was also able to start the world travels that would provide a wealth of experience and inspiration for his later work. Forristt has been in business in San Jose since 1989, working from the home he transformed into an oasis there. Clearly, he has established not only his
own “country” surrounding it, but the center of a universe he both escapes to and reaches out from in his role as “ambassador from some fantastic far-off land.” And what he is able to do with the outdoor environment of any given property would appear to be the work of such an ambassador. Fantastic flora thrives in otherworldly rockscapes. And reclaimed architectural artifacts—including those from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake—and antique stone complement
his custom contemporary concrete and hardscape elements to create exotic and timeless spaces. His style is both earthy and ethereal. One way Forristt describes it is “California Post Ranch Tassajara,” referring to the coastal retreat in Big Sur and the hot springs in Carmel Valley. But that is within the bounds of definition only. Each project becomes much more when it is uniquely built to clients’ desires and takes on a life of its own. LIFESTYLE RESOURCES
21
He also notes that he has been greatly influenced by his “hero, Isamu Noguchi, the iconic Japanese American sculptor and designer who experimented with a range of elements and materials to produce powerful, large-scale works of art. Forristt spends considerable time getting to know clients prior to a project. He starts with a master plan of their vision, but the details evolve in a collaborative process with them. His modus operandi is to have clients describe both

their fantasy and nightmare gardens. He also wants to know about happy childhood memories, as well as current delights. It all comes together to reflect their vision and lifestyle in a playful, magical way. He takes on only one project at a time, so clients have his undivided attention. He lives, sleeps, and breathes their project. He works with an assistant who has been with him from the start, as well as a crew of workers he trusts to
carry out complicated feats of excavation and placement. “It all looks very random, but I place the rocks carefully so they look as if they’ve landed there over centuries,” Forristt said in a 2002 interview in the New York Times. Winner of Garden Design magazine’s prestigious Golden Trowel award in 2006, he also partners with a landscape architect when the need arises. Specimen plants are generally used rather
than an abundance of high-maintenance flowering plants and lawn. This not only enhances the exotic quality of the hardscape, it supports a more minimal use of water. Although Forristt doesn’t promote his designs as eco-conscious, they inherently are, with the use of reclaimed materials and bio-permeable surfaces on cast concrete that return water to the ground. His irrigation systems incorporate drainage, rainwater catchment, LIFESTYLE RESOURCES

and cisterns that are part of the design. Attention is paid to providing the necessary support for hardscapes with complex earthquake safety systems. Forristt also designs with weather in mind; the materials he uses are only beautified as it adds natural patinas or helps them to age gracefully. Merging a home’s interior and exterior is another aspect of Forristt’s design philosophy. He offers everything imaginable for outdoor living, from rain chains to outdoor showers, garden follies to entry portals, as well as custom cast walls, furniture, and planters. Custom paintings and sculpture are also part of the service. He sometimes constructs mosaic walls using broken 14th-century Ming Dynasty china brought back from his travels years ago.
24
LIFESTYLE RESOURCES
Aside from the theatrical aspect of the way Forristt works, there is a lot of sense in what he does; there is method in his madness. And there is a formidable foundation under all the magic. There has to be. The consensus among his satisfied clients is to give him free rein. “Just turn him loose! What you will get will be far beyond your dreams, and yet wonderfully comfortable and compatible with your own taste.” What’s key to Cevan Forristt is his intent: that his clients have fun and love the end result. “Underpromise and overdeliver” is his motto. And the latter just may include a replica of that blue ceramic alligator you loved as a kid. It will surprise you from behind some ancient stone temple fragment. www.forristt.com

different direction in her business ventures? Perhaps this is the time for Cheryl to enter a new chapter in her life. Although a bit tight-lipped between an engaging smile and her genuine demeanor when asked about future projects, she did open up about launching a clothing line with QVC in 2015. Her line would include fitness clothing that is relatable for any woman of any size. From there, she hinted at some additional product lines that could evolve, which might include makeup or perhaps a relaunch of her shoe line.

She loves to explore new destinations all around the world and finds the long-distance flights are truly her best way to unwind and relax. There are many reds that pair beautifully with summer foods and weather. Wines with bright fruit, solid acidity and slightly lower alcohol are generally ones that work well with a range of lighter foods. Some of the cool-climate inland French wines, such as those of Chinon and Bourgueil, are beautiful throughout the year. Sicily is coming out with amazing and subtle fruit-driven wines such as frappato,
nerello mascalese and nerrello cappuccio. (They will be hard to find except on lists such as those at hip and fairly new restaurants such as Verbena and 1760, run by the family behind Acquerello and both located on Polk Street in San Francisco.) Oregon pinot noirs and some of California’s cooler-climate reds will also have the style and acidity to be refreshing on cool summer nights. Producers to look for include Ponzi Vineyards from Oregon and Toulouse Vineyards located in Mendocino in California; and El Molino’s wines produced in Napa are also beautiful. LIFESTYLE RESOURCES

FLITE LOGISTICS A HIGHER STANDARD FOR PRIVATE JET TRAVEL 46
LIFESTYLE RESOURCES
Victoria Collom, president and managing director of Flite Logistics, Inc., founded the company in April of 2013. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Victoria attended both Stanford University and Santa Clara University, which helped her appreciate the innovative creativity of Silicon Valley. While waiting a year to apply for medical school, she pursued another LIFESTYLE RESOURCES

one of her passions—flying. She earned her pilot certificates, became a flight instructor, and was then accepted as a flight officer with United Airlines. Victoria realized early on that with her husband being a pilot for Delta, their flight schedules clashed with raising their young children. With family as her first priority, she declined United’s assignment and to this day does not regret her decision. Remaining in aviation, Victoria was later employed by HewlettPackard as a flight planner in their aviation department. She recalls being encouraged by the flight department manager to earn her Flight Dispatcher’s License. This training placed her at the same level as the flight captain, but in a ground support position, which added another safety dimension for the corporate flight department. Victoria openly praises HewlettPackard’s flight department for setting the highest safety practice standards, which she implements today with her own company, Flite Logistics. She emphasizes, “Safety is the first priority of every flight. We qualify the crew, the company, and even the jet for each charter flight to the highest level of standards.” Every aspect of each flight is taken into consideration—from planning the type of aircraft best suited for each flight mission to selecting which jet fits best the needs of the passengers. Flite Logistics looks at the crew experiences in specific jet types since each one handles differently. For instance, first-time travelers may wish

a jet with a wider cabin and stable flight characteristics, while others may wish higher speeds since corporate schedules are tight and time is money. Regardless— safety is paramount. Weather conditions, as well as length of runways at each airport, are considered. Flite Logistics evaluates the restrictions of a high-altitude, mountainous airport on a winter day the same way it would a busy international airport on a summer day. Attention to personalized detail and communication throughout the process is key. Pilots are matched to the aircraft, beyond hours logged or credentials earned. Flite Logistics puts forth great effort knowing all aspects of the flight plan, and its clients’ needs are equally matched to ensure the most successful experience for all. When asked about customer service and how she defines it, Victoria replies, “It’s in a handshake. I can learn so much about the customer. And through a handshake, I can address concerns. It may be a ‘thank you’ for selecting Flite Logistics. Or it may show appreciation to the flight crew. It conveys integrity. It says ‘have a great flight; you’re in exceptional hands,’ or it says ‘welcome home.’ The handshake is multidimensional.” Victoria is a welcome sight for both her passengers as well as the crew. She watches the flight taxi down the runway and become airborne. When the landing gear retracts, you can see that look of pride on her face and her satisfaction knowing that all went well and that the details of the mission were executed flawlessly.

In talking with Victoria about her experiences with jet management companies, the benefits of private aviation today for the business customer become clear. Efficient use of the executive’s time is key to the success of their company. With Silicon Valley companies growing
internationally into such areas as Asia, India, and South America, ensuring that key executives reach their destinations safely, rested, and in a timely manner becomes vital. Security of CEOs in remote locations, or even the privacy of prominent government LIFESTYLE RESOURCES

officials, is a tremendous benefit of private jet travel. Among Fortune’s 2009 “World’s Most Admired Companies,” 95 percent of the top 50 S&P 500 companies on that list were users of private jet travel ( Nexa Report, 2009). Flite Logistics’ clientele is about 70 percent business travel and 30 percent personal travel for passengers with special needs, with a primary focus in the Bay Area. Private jet travel allows companies and business travelers to manage tight schedules, giving them the option to get where they need to be when they need to be there. Many personal travelers elect to fly private due to difficulties that may come with flying commercial: long lines and wait time, or the higher risk of exposure when there may be a health concern—or they may just have the desire and means to fly private. Either way, it’s a good time

to fly private—and always the time to fly safely. Throughout each step of her career, Victoria has taught aviation classes beginning first at Foothill College and Moffett Field, and then transitioning to San Jose State University’s aviation department. Even today in the early mornings, she still teaches courses, from private-pilot ground school to international flight planning to business aviation management, sharing her real-life experiences and respect for the private aviation industry. As a board member of the Northern California Business Aviation Association, Victoria actively encourages students to network and get involved with business aviation. “We need to encourage college students to contribute to the industry with fresh ideas and enthusiasm so that we both may benefit and evolve with today’s technology.” www.flitelogistics.com

ne of the hottest cars on the market right now is the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray. Dipping into its rich past, Chevrolet has returned the Stingray nameplate to America’s sports car once again. Astute Corvette aficionados will pick up subtle styling cues from Corvettes of the past, but this new, seventh-generation Corvette is ready to do battle with just about any car on the road today. Power is provided by a torquey 6.2 liter, 455 hp V-8 linked to a 7-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission with a 3:42 traction control rear end, capable of zero to sixty in just 3.8 seconds. This car is designed for every type of

driving, with multiple suspension settings, and even exhaust settings to suit the driver and road conditions. Sitting behind the wheel, this has to be the most comfortable and quiet Corvette to date. Seating posture is excellent, and the dash and instruments are easy to read and navigate. The ride is firm, but not harsh. It is at home in front of the country club or on the race track. It could be the most versatile sports car there is, plus it delivers 29 mpg! Available in three different trim levels in both the standard LT and the performance Z51 models, as well as in the convertible, there is a Corvette for every price level and taste.
