celebrity designer celebrates the sights and scents of spring Kelli Ellis is an interior designer for all seasons. But when spring rolls around each year, she is truly in her element.

Decorating with flowers begins with choosing a container that is in sync with the season and the style of your home, counsels Ellis.

For Ellis, spring offers endless opportunities to update and refresh interior spaces with touches of color. While she always recommends starting with a neutral foundation that includes walls and major pieces of furniture in shades of white, beige or brown, Ellis loves to add seasonal flourishes by changing up accents and accessories.

The same principle applies to the flowers themselves. Mixed flowers tend to be more traditional; bunches of local flowers lend a homey, just-picked quality to a casual or country home; and monochromatic arrangements ooze modern. The key, notes Ellis, is to pair flowers with both their containers and the indoor environment in which they will be seen.

An award-winning celebrity interior designer, Ellis’s work is everywhere, as a featured designer on TLC’s Clean Sweep and HGTV’s Takeover My Makeover. Known for her love of flowers and floral design, Ellis also serves as a spokesperson for the Society of American Florists.

“With a neutral foundation,” explains Ellis, “you don’t have to invest a lot of time or money to refresh. Once you have the basics — those pieces of furniture that you absolutely love and will stand the test of time — the sky’s the limit in terms of changing accents such as valances, pillows, rugs, candle holders — even the matting on a picture. A neutral foundation opens the door to a new look with minimal changes.”

According to Ellis, one of the best — and easiest — ways to add seasonal color and refresh a living space is with fresh flowers displayed in a variety of containers. Fresh flowers not only enliven a room and bring in the sights and scents of the outdoors, they are perfect for playing up color and color combinations.

“A lot of people are afraid of color in their décor, so a less scary way of introducing color is with flowers and vases,” Ellis notes. “Fresh flowers can go with any type of décor and generally last as long as your mood, so there are endless opportunities to experiment without making a long-term commitment.”

“There are so many container options for every type of décor,” Ellis says. “If your home leans toward country, think about using old decanters, tins or even wooden boxes. For contemporary homes, glass vases with clean lines work best. And for traditional homes, go with urns or ornate vases.”

Next comes color. While Ellis leans toward monochromatic arrangements of white flowers — stargazers, lilies, roses and orchids are among her personal favorites — she nevertheless appreciates the “pop” of color that can be achieved with bolder blossoms.

When choosing flowers for a particular spot or room, Ellis advises looking at complementary colors — those that are on the opposite side of the color wheel. For example, if the walls are a warm shade of yellow or gold, a container filled with blue flowers, such as hydrangeas, delphiniums or sapphire orchids, makes a bold statement. And in the green room? Try flowers in shades of purple and violet.

“I think the greatest thing in the world is to bring your own vase or container to the florist and ask for something special that works with it,” she reveals. “Not every florist has a vase that suits your taste or will work in a particular spot, so I take in my containers and say, ‘I want something blue.’ Then I’m both surprised with the result and certain that it will work with the décor.” To learn more about Ellis and her latest projects, visit her online at kelliellis.com.

Simple Salmon Bisque

the new fast food for multi-tasking moms

Makes 3 (1-cup) servings

Fresh Salmon is the answer for time-pressed moms and can help address the growing obesity issue in children, says Holly Clegg, recognized author, chef and working mother.

“Working moms are facing huge challenges getting healthy food quickly on the table for their families,” says Clegg. “We know that fresh salmon itself can multi-task: it’s a super health food, it’s fast and you can make more than one meal at once.

“Fresh salmon from the Maritimes is one way to attack the myth that fast means unhealthy,” says Clegg. “It’s high in protein and it contains key vitamins and minerals, so you know it’s a great food to serve your family. And with very little planning you can cook one meal and make three more out of it, minimizing mom’s time in the kitchen.”

Clegg adds that salmon is a natural source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which recent studies have shown to be critical for vision and improved brain development in infants. Pregnant women, nursing moms, as well as developing children, will benefit from salmon’s “brain food” qualities.

Clegg, known as the “Queen of Quick” and author of a best-selling cookbook series, takes every opportunity to show moms, who are often in charge of meal planning and preparation, how to boost their families’ menu with what she called the new “super fast food.” Her recipes are simple to prepare and use everyday ingredients. Using a basic salmon recipe for one meal, Clegg shows moms that by cooking extra they can prepare three other unique and delicious recipes like salmon salad, bisque and sliders.

Clegg is eager to help as child obesity rates continue to rise. With parents working more hours, it leaves them with less time to shop for healthy food options and to prepare healthy meals. Timepressed families are relying more on fast food and packaged food, which tend to be high in fat and calories, just to get food on the table quickly, she says.

“Working moms are under so much pressure from so many sources. If we can provide them with ways to juggle all those demands and know they are keeping their family healthy then, hopefully, we’re taking some of that pressure off,” says Clegg.

“The great thing about fresh salmon is how easy it is to get it fresh,” says Clegg. “If you buy salmon from Maritimes you know it was literally swimming just a couple of days earlier and that’s hard to beat.”

First make enough glazed salmon for all recipes. Serve four fillets for dinner then use the leftover salmon for lunches and dinners later.

Glazed Salmon Makes 4 servings

¼ cup honey 2 tablespoons lowsodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 4 6-ounce salmon fillets 1. In small bowl, whisk together honey, soy sauce, lime juice and mustard. Marinate salmon in sauce in refrigerator for several hours or until ready to cook.

Tips For A Sunny Garden Usually facing south or west,

a full-sun garden generally

receives sunlight all day long,

including the most intense

afternoon sun. With these

conditions, you have optimum

growing conditions for many flowering plants, trees and

shrubs, and the greatest number

of plants to choose from.

Choosing the Right Plants When choosing which plants to use in the sun, consider carefully: size, color, bloom time, texture, scent, the ability to attract birds and insects, drought-tolerance and hardiness. Nursery tags list much of this information, including a number indicating a plant’s hardiness zone. These zones, going from 0 to 8 in Canada, are determined by average winter temperatures, 0 being the coldest and 8 the warmest. If you are a new gardener, I advise you to become familiar with the growing zone that you live in. That said, there are other factors that influence a plant’s survival, such as wind, soil conditions and snow cover. Remember that snow is the best free plant insulation that you can find! It protects the roots of plants from severe temperatures and the freeze-and-thaw cycles that are so common during Canadian winters. While checking a tag, always look for the plant’s mature size. It is important to envision how a garden will look not only when first planted, but also in five and 10 years’ time. Rather than trying to control the size of a plant by continual pruning, choose plants whose ultimate size is suited to their location in the garden. Also keep in mind that the amount of sun your garden receives may change over time as plants mature. That lovely silver birch might make a nice focal point to your backyard now, but will it be casting shade over the flower beds in five years? Flowering annual plants are known for their quick growth and extended bloom that can start in late spring and carry on into fall until frost kills them. Used on their own or to fill spaces among other plants, they can be successfully added to the garden for instant color throughout the growing season. Perennial plants return each year with specific, usually shorter, flowering times that can be coordinated to fill each season with color. As a rule, perennials grow bigger each year, so the need for annuals as filler diminishes. This habit of perennials to outperform themselves from year to year requires judicious selection of variety and species. Advantages and Challenges of the Sunny Garden Sunny gardens not only offer endless possibilities for a wide range of prolific flowering plants but can also produce an abundance of vegetables, herbs and fruit. Rock gardens and meadow gardens also have the greatest success in sunny sites.

LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE

However, full sun does make certain demands of the gardener. Many plants love the sun, but so do weeds, which have adapted to dry conditions and will compete with garden plants for water and nutrients. Planting densely will make it tough for weeds to establish themselves. The heat of full sun causes both plants and soil to lose a great deal of moisture very quickly, so the gardener must both supplement and preserve Mother Nature’s water supply. Choosing drought-tolerant plants – generally those with fuzzy, silver, succulent, spiny or needled leaves – is just one way of reducing water demands. Mulch, My Friends, Mulch I frequently talk about the benefits of mulch – and in a sunny garden, it can mean the difference between success and frustration. A layer five centimeters (two inches) thick of finely ground pine or cedar bark mulch helps to insulate the soil against extreme temperature fluctuations and dramatically reduces moisture loss from evaporation. It also suppresses weeds and eventually breaks down, adding nutrients to the soil.

LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE Water Wisely It is best to water early in the morning or in the evening to allow the moisture time to soak into the soil without evaporating. Watering at the soil level is more efficient than overhead sprinklers. Soaker hoses, which have a weeping action, reduce both evaporation loss and run-off. They are ideal for use in gardens, around trees and shrubs and along walkways. Moderating Your Sun If you experience highintensity sun in your garden, I suggest that you introduce a little afternoon shade. By filtering, not eliminating, the sun, especially during the hottest part of the day, you can reduce the stress on plants and make the garden a more inviting place for you and your visitors to use and enjoy. There are several options

healthy, happy, balanced life 9

available for cooling out-door spaces, ranging from permanent structures to planting trees and large shrubs. Building or planting to create shade in your yard is a great excuse to be creative and have some fun. Determine where your trees, plants or structures must be located to provide shade when you are most inclined to use your garden. A shade tree is the best solution as space permits. Planting a young shade tree now will bring increased shade to the yard with each growing season. Planted on the south side of your house, a shade tree will help keep it cool in summer and, once the tree drops its leaves, will allow the sun in to heat the house in winter. Or site it beside a patio or porch; nothing beats sitting there looking up into a leaf canopy. Excerpts from The Canadian Garden Primer, Mark Cullen, Host, Ladies Night, Home Hardware, May 15th

Q&A

Beth & Cat answer your questions. Direct all questions to them at: info@lifestylesmagazine.ca How can I avoid the flu and keep myself healthy?

This is certainly the time of year when many people are affected by the flu or flu-like symptoms. Fortunately, there are many things that you can do to protect yourself from getting sick.

©2012 Anytime Fitness, LLC

Drink lots of fresh, filtered water. Eat whole foods are best! Eat lots of fruits & veggies to keep your immune system strong, particularly those high in Vitamin C, Zinc and other antioxidants. Apples, berries, grapefruit, avocados & bananas are all good choices of fruits.

Up your intake of leafy greens, carrots, garlic and onions to boost your immunity and cleanse your system. Rest Be sure to get adequate rest and find ways to reduce stress. Yoga, meditation, journaling and other methods of self-care will all contribute to your overall health & well-being, reducing the possibility of getting sick. Stay active Get your body moving to improve circulation and lymphatic drainage – your lymph system doesn’t have a built-in pump, so needs you to activate it in order to stay clear and keep you healthy. During the winter months you can stay active indoors with yoga, Pilates, or dance. If you are the outdoorsy type, you can enjoy hiking, skiing or tobogganing with the kids or grandkids! Try acupressure (Shiatsu) or acupuncture which will help to balance the meridians and points in the body, boosting the immune system. Acupressure will also stimulate lymph drainage and blood circulation, keeping things moving and flushing out the bugs.

LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE I’ve heard about yoga, but what exactly is it and what are some of the benefits? Although the actual beginnings of yoga are unknown, the first written texts of yoga date back to India more than 5000 years ago. Today, yoga is practiced around the world as a mind-body-spirit system for achieving health, well-being and self-awareness. The practice of yoga postures (or asanas) is one of the eight limbs of a full yoga practice. The styles & interpretations of yoga are endless. It is something that I believe everyone can and should incorporate into their life for overall improved health & well-being. The benefits of yoga are limitless: from increased flexibility, endurance and strength to weight loss, stress reduction and clarity. Yoga has been proven to increase levels of happiness, while reducing levels of stress; it helps improve sexual and cardiovascular health and has also been shown to help reduce chronic pain. The list of benefits that can be expected from an ongoing yoga practice goes on and on. Generally, each individual will see positive

change and feel an overall sense of well-being from their very first practice on the mat. My friend has been going for acupressure, or Shiatsu, and says I would enjoy it, can you tell me about it? Shiatsu is a form of massage developed by the Japanese that was derived from Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Shiatsu literately translates to "finger pressure" meaning the practitioner's fingers and thumbs are used to access the acupressure points in the body, with NO needles involved. Energy channels called meridians are accessed and stimulated through the acupressure points creating balance for the receiver. for Spring!

Freshen up

With spring on its way the days are getting longer and the sun brighter. While we’ve been having a relatively mild winter, spring is a time of renewal. Invite change to your home by freshening up your décor. With these few simple tips it’s easier and less expensive than it sounds. Outside the buds are blossoming and the birds are singing. One of the simplest ways to bring the outdoor colors inside is to hang art on your walls. Dress up a neutral background by introducing aqua blues and spring greens. Brighten up! Say goodbye to old man winter and those extra layers of bulk for a lighter spring wardrobe that’s full of ladylike looks and splashes of color. Traditionally spring calls for delicate colors, soft fabrics and patterns. This means everything should be clean, refreshing, light and tranquil. Choose sheer fabrics, linens and open weave textiles. Trade in your deep dark drenched colors for a modern graphic or delicate floral pattern. Nothing says spring more than fresh flowers. Make sure to be consistent with creating arrangements. Choose a color scheme, such as

healthy, happy, balanced life 11 all white, instead of mixing bouquets, use the same type of flower in one glass container with a beautiful white satin ribbon wrapped around it. For your table don’t stop with a simple center piece, move from ceramic to crystal and glass tableware. Your guests are sure to appreciate your exquisite taste! Overall spring is light and airy. Think of Mother Nature and go to the colors you see outside. By investing in a few key pieces you can give a fresh spring look to your home. What a lovely thought! How to

enjoy water and help the environment

B

ottled water is considered a healthy alternative to sodas and other bottled soft drinks. Though drinking more water might be good for human health, the plastic bottles housing that water are not nearly as friendly to the planet. Though environmentalists urge people to drink water to be healthy, they also ask that people be mindful of the planet’s health when they choose their water sources.

According to the Environmental Working Group, the annual manufacturing of plastic bottles for water in the United States consumes as much oil as required to fuel a million cars. The manufacturing of bottles may also compromise the air and ground surrounding bottle manufacturing plants. The threat to the environment from discarded water bottles is significant. Plastics are produced with a bevy of chemicals, each of which may leach into the ground after being disposed of. Many of these chemicals are carcinogens and can be dangerous when the plastics are heated or incinerated for disposal. These same chemicals also may leach into the foods and beverages packaged inside certain plastic bottles. One chemical, bisphenol A, or BPA, is particularly concerning. BPA is present in many plastic water bottles, and medical specialists have suggested that BPA can contribute to everything from ADHD to depression to cancer and even diabetes. It is adviseable for people to drink several servings of water each and every day to remain healthy. But there are ways to minimize dependence on bottled water to help promote a healthier environment and a healthier body. Choose the right plastic. When selecting plastic containers to hold water, choose among those that are marked with the #2, #4 or #5

symbols. These are high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene. These plastics are safer than other options. Fill up a glass or aluminum bottle. Aluminum and glass bottles can be found in many natural food and natural products markets. These containers can be safely reused and then eventually recycled when they need to be replaced. Choose larger containers. If you must purchase bottled water, select larger gallon containers that can be used to fill up reusable bottles instead of buying individual-use bottles. Invest in a water filter. Filters that attach to the faucet in the kitchen or filters on the water-supply line of a refrigerator provide fresh-tasting water straight from the tap. Do not reuse plastic water bottles. Health advocates recommend not reusing bottles made from plastic #1. They may leach DEHP when washed or heated. Furthermore, used bottles may harbor harmful bacteria that can make a person sick. Put them in the recycling bin right after use. Bottled water has become a staple because of the presumed health benefits. Reducing dependency on bottled water can help the environment by reducing trash and chemical leaching.

Lifting weights and staying hydrated are two ways to step up your metabolism

ieters are often aware of metabolism and its effect on an individual’s weight. Metabolism is a process that serves a host of important functions, including converting food and drink into energy and using energy to construct certain components of cells. For the perpetual dieter, metabolism can be a natural-born enemy, a process that simply isn’t fast enough for dieters to lose weight. Even more frustrating, a person’s metabolism can hinge on genetics and gender. People may inherit a speedy or slow metabolism. Gender plays a large role considering men have a tendency to burn more calories than women, even while resting. Those who inherited a speedy metabolism are often the people who can seemingly eat whatever they choose without gaining a pound. But gaining a faster metabolism isn’t just for men or those who inherited a speedier metabolism at birth. In fact, there are several healthy ways to speed up metabolism. Pack on some muscle. People with more muscle tend to have a higher resting metabolic rate. That’s because muscle burns more calories than fat. According to the American Council on Exercise, each pound of fat burns just two calories per day, while various estimates suggest each pound of muscle burns between 35 to 50 calories per day. Those figures might seem insignificant, but they add up over time and someone with significant muscle can burn considerably more calories than someone without.

Employ resistance training to build muscle, as such training activates muscles all over the body, increasing your daily metabolic rate as a result. Emphasize intensity. Daily exercise is great, but high-intensity daily exercise will prove more effective at speeding up your metabolism. Low- or moderate-intensity workouts don’t pack the same punch as high-intensity workouts, which produce a longer increase in resting metabolic rate. Sign up for a Zumba or spin class at your gym, both of which are the kind of high-intensity cardiovascular workout that can speed up your metabolism. Embrace grazing. Grazing is a dietary philosophy in which individuals eat five to six smaller meals every three to four hours instead of three large meals each day. Eating this way helps keep your metabolism going, and the result is you will burn more calories throughout the day than you would if you ate a more traditional diet. Of course, what you eat when grazing is important, too. Choose low-fat, high-nutrient foods, and snack on fruits and vegetables instead of more popular snacks like potato chips. Grazing on unhealthy foods won’t lead to weight loss and may even cause weight gain. Eat more protein. Protein can serve many purposes for people trying to lose weight. Protein has a tendency to make you feel full when you eat it, reducing the likelihood that you will overeat. In addition, the body burns more calories when digesting protein

than it does while digesting fats or carbohydrates. Turkey, low-fat dairy products, fish, nuts and beans are great sources of protein, which should not be all you eat but can be used as a periodic replacement for other foods that may slow down your metabolism. Stay hydrated. Your metabolism will likely slow down if you allow yourself to get dehydrated. When the body does not have enough water, several of its functions, including its ability to burn calories, slow down. Muscles are roughly 70 percent water, so if they are not fully hydrated they cannot generate energy, affecting your metabolism. In addition, the body is not as effective at using fat as fuel when it is dehydrated, further slowing your metabolism. Staying hydrated is as easy as drinking enough water throughout the day. How much water an individual needs to stay hydrated is open to debate among medical professionals, but one study found that adults who drink eight or more glasses of water per day burned more calories than those who drank four glasses of water per day. Many people feel they were either gifted at birth with a fast metabolism or doomed from the start with a slow metabolism. But an individual’s metabolism is not set in stone, and there are a host of healthy ways men and women can speed up their metabolism.

H

igh cholesterol is an issue for many men and women, who may or may not know that excessive cholesterol in the blood can increase a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease. That’s a genuine concern for many people, as the American Heart Association notes that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Statistics Canada reports that heart disease accounted for 21 percent of all deaths in 2008 (the most recent year for which statistics were available), placing it behind only cancer among the leading causes of death in Canada. The link between high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease has long since been established, but the good news is that even men and women with considerably high cholesterol levels can greatly reduce their risk of one day developing cardiovascular disease. Some may need the help of prescription medication to lower their cholesterol, while others might only need to make certain lifestyle changes to lower their cholesterol. Men and women should discuss a plan of attack to lower their cholesterol levels with a physician, who will determine if medication should be a part of the plan. Even if medication is a factor, the following are some lifestyle changes men and women with high or moderate cholesterol levels can make to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. Shed those extra pounds. According to the Mayo Clinic, losing as little as 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can greatly reduce cholesterol levels. There are a number of ways to lose weight, but the most successful way to lose weight and keep it off typically involves adopting a more active lifestyle and coupling that with a healthy diet. The AHA recommends 30 minutes of physical activity each day. This can include any number of activities that

get you off the couch and exercising, including walking, biking, swimming, and jogging. An additional benefit of exercising to lose weight is that it can raise your so-called “good” cholesterol (also known as high-density lipoprotein, or HDL), which can protect you against a heart attack. Many medical experts believe HDL carries cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where the cholesterol is then passed from the body. Embrace heart-healthy foods. One of the more effective, yet often most difficult, ways to lower cholesterol is to make dietary changes, forgoing unhealthy fare for more heart-friendly foods. The idea of changing one’s diet does not appeal to many people, but a more heart-healthy diet does not have to be devoid of taste. You can still eat red meat and

dairy products, but keep them to a minimum, as both red meat and dairy can raise your “bad” cholesterol. Also known as low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, bad cholesterol can combine with other substances to form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible, increasing one’s risk of heart attack and stroke. Red meat and dairy tend to have a good deal of saturated fat, which the Mayo Clinic suggests should account for less than 7 percent of your daily caloric intake. There are many ways to make more heart-healthy dietary choices, some of which include selecting whole grains (including whole wheat pasta and whole wheat flour), loading up on fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber (which can lower cholesterol) and choosing entrees for foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as certain types of fish, which help lower LDL cholesterol. Stop smoking. Smokers have a surefire way to reduce their cholesterol, though some may find it more difficult than making any dietary changes. Quitting smoking has an almost immediate impact on the health of your heart, which is at a lower risk of attack within 24 hours of quitting smoking. Within one year of quitting, your risk of heart attack is half that of someone who continues to smoke, and in 15 years your risk of heart disease will be similar to that of someone who has never smoked. In addition, quitting smoking may improve your HDL cholesterol level. Though it might not be easy, quitting smoking might be the most effective way to improve your cholesterol levels while lowering your risk for cardiovascular disease. Daily physical activity, including walking, is one easy way to reduce your cholesterol levels as well as your risk for heart disease.

Time for a

Professionally Fitted Bra?

Want to stand tall and poised? Want to look good and feel comfortable all day long? Well, you can! Finding properly fitting bras is essential in order for this checklist to unfold in a woman’s day. Unfortunately, many women are still wearing bras that are not the right size. Over an extended period of time, this will cause detriment not only to your appearance, but also to your general health. How? Poor Posture If you are wearing a bra that is not properly fitted, you can, in fact, spend most of your day slouching over! This happens whether you are on your feet all day or at your desk. This is generally caused by discomfort and potentially weakened back muscles. Over time, slouching may cause spinal and back problems or further complications to pre-existing back issues. Perhaps the weight of your breasts cannot withstand the bra that you are wearing, which could make your breasts weigh heavy in the front of your body forcing you to slouch. Slouching would not occur in the right size bra. Another factor could be that the straps of your bra are not positioned accurately, because when your straps are properly adjusted, you will be guaranteed to have a balanced, comfortable fit. Breathing If you are wearing a band size that is too small, this constricted pressure will be felt around your rib cage which, in turn, could cause you troubled breathing, such as shortness of breath. In order to ensure that your bra is not causing any breathing issues, you may want to take your bra off to see if you are breathing better once it has been removed. If you are breathing better, chances are your bra band was the culprit and you are wearing something way too small for the circumference of your upper torso.

Pain A bra should not cause you any pain whatsoever. None! Zero! Zilch! But if it is, there are reasons. If you find that your bra is digging into your shoulders or the underwire is poking you underneath your arms or if the bra hooks are digging into your back causing you pain...these are general signs that, again, your bra is fitting way too small. In my opinion, it would be a great idea not to wear these bras again! Abrasions and Red Marks If you have any abrasions or redness when taking off your bra, stop wearing that bra immediately! If the underwire is rubbing up against your skin in discomfort, day after day, this could potentially cause you lumps, hyperpigmentation, broken skin, infection and a whole series of other issues that are preventable. If you are left with redness once your bra comes off, your bra is either too small or you may be having an allergic reaction to the fabric. A fool-proof measure, in my books, is that if it doesn’t look good or feel good....chances are, it’s not good! I always tell my customers that we are not one generic size in a bra, because, technically, we’re not. It is like going into a store to buy jeans or a shirt. Everything fits so differently and so do bras. That is why it is so important to be fitted for your bra. So, please feel free to get fitted for a bra by a professional. It will only take 15 minutes of your time and then you can spend the rest of your day poised and comfortable. Now, aren’t you worth it? Raffaella Tassone

Creating Intimate Areas Within A Large Kitchen Space

“I hate my home” were the client’s first words. A workaholic by nature, the client would delay coming home as long as possible to avoid dealing with how unhappy her home made her feel. Tired of the colour scheme, dated finishes, and furnishings, she wanted to start with a clean slate. A son’s upcoming home wedding was the catalyst for this renovation. She wanted a comfortable, modern, inviting home and a space suitable for entertaining family and friends. The challenge? To create multiple functions within the new larger kitchen making these areas inviting and intimate for her guests. The existing wall dividing the old dining room area and kitchen was to be removed to create an adjoining lounge area in its place. Entertaining Kitchen The wall between the kitchen and the rarely used dining room was removed, resulting in a more open kitchen area including multiple eating areas, dining area and adjoining kitchen lounge. By establishing functional zones in the kitchen, adding texture and interest to the ceilings and incorporating a warm grey colour palette

on walls and flooring, a new coziness was established. The new dining area, kitchen and kitchen lounge flow and transition easily, perfect for entertaining family and friends, and a place anyone could truly love coming home to. The blend of walnut wood and painted cream cabinetry provides interest and opportunity for contrasting display niches throughout. The niches and cabinets are illuminated with energy-saving warm white LED light fixtures. Kitchen Lounge Area The new adjoining lounge area allows for additional seating for informal cocktails and appetizers. A deep-seated lounge sectional and swivel leather lounge chairs provide soft seating for animated conversation. A bold accent wall in the client’s favourite colour, eggplant purple, provides a wonderful backdrop for the extent of the new kitchen area. Custom fabricated drapery, blinds and area rug complete the look. Appliances The client whose profession as a baker and her love for cooking, requested a well equipped kitchen. The kitchen was outfitted with sleek stainless steel appliances including a 48” fridge, two wall ovens, warming drawer, a microwave drawer, two wine and beverage fridges, gas range top and pot filler, and a double drawer dishwasher. The custom designed kitchen also includes a separate bar sink and plenty of pantry storage. Durable quartz counter tops integrate the grey tones of the wall colour and back splash wall tile, finishing the transitional look. Ceilings and Flooring Perhaps the most dramatic transformation was the addition of the

custom overhead ceiling beams and panelling work creating texture and interest to an otherwise flat drywall ceiling. Recessed lights wash the perimeter walls, while pendants provide task lighting for work surfaces. The new layout

area encourages guests to linger longer. An oversized custom storage upholstered bench in the bay window, provides seating for 10-12 people. The eight foot long custom live edge dining table made from salvaged black walnut wood provides an artisan element to the

allows for plenty of counter seating and additional eating areas at both the centre island and the peninsula. Durable porcelain tile flooring with a realistic honed limestone appearance and herringbone pattern compliments the overall design. Eating Area Comfortable seating in the dining

space. Lighting was also carefully selected to add sparkle along the length of the table. The dining area allows guests to enjoy a spectacular view of the backyard pond and gardens, a perfect backdrop for a home wedding. Nancy Lem, Interior Designer www.nancylemdesign.com

Building A Home?

I

consider site specific design

nstead of just buying a house plan from a book, perhaps you should consider an architectural designer instead. Why? In addition to getting the amenities you want, you get a design that is site specific and can save you money as well.

A good architectural designer will come look at your site and then design a house specifically for that site, taking into account things such as prevailing winds, passive solar siting, views from, and of neighbouring houses, privacy, and more. Some of these choices will help save you money in heating and air conditioning, not to mention window treatments and details. In this house, the architectural designer positioned the garage on the north-east corner of the building.

Why?

This move uses the large mass of the garage to shelter the house from those cold winter winds resulting in energy savings. In the direct opposite corner of the house, there is a wrap around deck, which takes advantage of the south side of the great room, wrapping right along the west wall, and ending in the screened porch. Large sliding doors go around that entire deck as well, taking advantage of the warming light from the sun in the winter, helping to heat the great room. In contrast, the hot summer sun is kept out using the door overhangs. This design and positioning helps with cooling in the summer and heating in the winter months. Thus, the homeowner saves on both heating and cooling bills year round. According to the homeowner less than $800 was spent on heating and cooling this 2400 square foot house last year. The many benefits of

buying locally B uying locally is a great way for consumers to find the products and services they’re looking for and help their local economy along the way. The small businesses in your community may be owned by your next door neighbor, who relies on his or her fellow townspeople to keep the business going strong. Buying locally is not only beneficial for local business owners, but buying locally benefits consumers and members of the community in a number of ways. Buying locally creates jobs. The number of unemployed men and women has gradually declined in recent years, but those figures are still high in many communities. Buying locally creates jobs in your community, potentially creating a job for you or a friend or family member. Buying locally helps the environment. Buying within your community reduces the amount of fuel you’re likely to use for a weekend shopping trip while also reducing pollution. In addition, many local store owners use local materials and ingredients, reducing the amount of fuel consumed to get products into the store. Buying locally creates a more closely knit community. Juggling a career and a family can make it

hard for men and women to get to know their neighbors and other members of their community. Buying locally is an opportunity to strengthen that bond with your neighbors, creating a close-knit community in which residents may feel safer and more comfortable. Buying locally is more convenient. Convenience is paramount to many consumers, and buying locally saves both time and money. Driving to a faraway mall or shopping center or paying costly online shipping fees is not nearly as quick or convenient as shopping within your community, where you can purchase and take home items on the same day without using a full tank of gas or paying for shipping. Buying locally benefits your local economy. A recent study found that of every $100 spent at local businesses, $68 remained in the local economy, while only $43 of every $100 spent at chain stores remained in the local economy. That’s a significant boost to your local economy, and all it requires is shopping at local retailers. Buying locally can increase your property value. Homeowners might be able to increase the value of their homes by buying locally. A joint study from Independent We Stand and Civic Economics found that cities with a strong centralized small business district had a 54

Shopping locally benefits merchants and consumers alike

percent greater increase in property values than communities that did not have such a district. A more thriving local community, including a thriving shopping district, is no doubt attractive to prospective home buyers. The reasons for shopping locally are many. In addition to helping local business owners, consumers who shop locally are also helping themselves.

SPRING

CLEANSING

With spring on its way, many of us have spring cleaning on our minds – time to wash, tidy and reorganize our living spaces in order to welcome the season with a fresh start. But why focus only on your home? Why not extend thoughts of spring cleaning to mind, body and spirit? Our bodies, like our homes, also need cleansing, and spring is the best time for this because it’s the season of renewal, regeneration and revitalization. Did you know that we are exposed to pesticides, fertilizers and toxic chemicals on a daily basis, and that there are over 80,000 chemicals that can be found in everyday products approved for use such as toothpaste, shampoos, household cleaners, candles and antiperspirants? We are exposed to toxins through the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink, and these toxins have been linked to cancers and chronic disease. What can you do to protect your health? You can learn to recognize toxic ingredients, minimize exposure, and do a full-body cleanse with a focus on the liver. The liver is a detoxification powerhouse. Without a well-functioning liver, the body is unable to cleanse itself. Almost all chemicals that enter the body are processed and broken down by the liver, so if the liver gets backed up, it means chemicals are left to inhabit the blood stream and wreak havoc in our bodies. On the other hand, by keeping our liver in tip-top shape, we can help protect ourselves from the harmful chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis. How do you cleanse your liver? Take at least seven days and commit to eating a clean, organic, plant-based diet. Stick to whole foods such as vegetables, fruit, brown rice, quinoa, nuts, seeds, beans and legumes. Eat lots of leafy green vegetables, and drink plenty of clean, filtered water (with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice) each day. Consume no dairy, sugar, soy, red meat, artificial sweeteners or colourings and no junk or packaged foods of any kind. You can increase the intensity of your cleanse by adding liver-specific vitamins and plant-based medicines, but talk to a naturopathic doctor before doing so to make sure it is safe for you. Along with a clean diet, it’s important to practice deep breathing. In Chinese medicine it is believed that taking deep, cleansing breaths assures the smooth flow of liver Qi (also known as energy) and thus aids the liver in clearing itself of waste. Try this deep breathing exercise: breathe mindfully, in through your nose for a count of six, hold for six, and then breathe out through your mouth for a count of six. Repeat this three to six times each day. Happy Spring Cleansing! Alison parsons, BSc, ND

We thrive on it, live for it. Like a new born baby who needs to be held to survive, this need never leaves us as we grow.

T

Touch...how nurturing! hink how much a supportive hug can make your day. Living in the technological age, we see ourselves moving farther away from face-to-face communication and human contact. Unfortunately blurred boundaries, the need for more personal space and a general lack of understanding how to communicate our needs grows as we live in the modern day. It is harder to find this nurturing touch or the proper channels of where to look for it. As a child we were nurtured, consoled, and hugged by a parental figure. Mom usually helped soothe us. This is how our primal selves are known to behave. As we mature into our adult years, one starts looking beyond the parental figure to a lover or partner to provide us with that touch and love. Unfortunately,

even with a partner in our lives, this nurturing touch does not always come to us. It is such a primal desire and often gets over looked as a necessity. There is a reason why people come to receive massage and shiatsu. There is a primal longing for human contact, in a non-sexual way. The desire is strong, whether they are conscious of it or not. This touch can bring one back, remembering their connection to mother love and fill a space deep within their heart center that soothes once again.

Everyone craves a nurturing touch

answers your health and wellness questions What are chia seeds and how should they be used as part of a healthy diet?

Most people know chia seeds as being responsible for producing a furry green friend called the Chia Pet. However, more recently this seed has gained popularity because of the health benefits it provides. Serving as an excellent source of omega-3, fiber, protein, minerals, and antioxidants, chia seeds can easily be incorporated into your diet in drinks, snack items, raw, or combined with water to substitute for an egg. Because widespread consumption of chia seeds is relatively new, conclusive research on the exact health benefits is still developing. Emerging research with small sample sizes suggest possible cardiovascular benefits like lowered cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure, as well as the promotion of weight loss.

Should I be taking a probiotic supplement?

There is no short and sweet answer to this question. Yes, probiotics are

believed to aid in digestion. However, at this point in time we lack enough scientific evidence to strongly promote or discourage their consumption. Beyond gastrointestinal issues, the use of probiotics for other ailments like colic, high cholesterol, or immune system disturbances is currently under examination. With many different strains of probiotics, it is to be expected that each one affects the body differently. That said, taking a probiotic supplement with many different strains doesn’t necessarily improve its efficacy, according to experts. Given the limited scientific backing, it is recommended that probiotic intake be reserved to those strains of bacteria that have been well studied (like Lactobacillus Rhamnosus or Lactobacillus GG) and probiotic products made from reputable brands.

Do I really need to sweat profusely to get in a good workout, or is this another fitness myth?

Myth all the way! Sweating and the overall quality of your workout do

not go hand in hand. Workout quality depends on the type of activity, the intensity and the duration. Sweating is simply a way for your overheated body to cool itself…that’s it. Some people sweat from the very beginning of physical activity and others end up doing 30 minutes before the first bead hits the floor. Your environment, specifically the temperature and humidity, certainly plays a role, but the amount you sweat is very individualized as well. When you’re physically active, your core body temperature rises and the body looks for an easy way to dissipate heat. So, the next time you’re sweating and someone mentions that you look hot, just tell them, “Really, I was just starting to get cool.”

Infantile Colic? Chiropractic Care Gives Relief

Affected infants often will have a tense, rumbling abdomen with distension, knees flexed from abdominal cramping and pain, flatulence, and general fussiness between periods of inconsolable crying.

Colic occurs in 20 to 39 percent of infants, typically beginning early in infancy and persisting for several months. The most common criteria includes crying for three hours per day, three days per week for a period of at least three weeks In one recent study of 316 infants with colic, improvement was seen in 94 percent within two weeks of chiropractic care. Fifty-one percent of the infants had prior, unsuccessful treatment, 83 percent of which was drug-related therapy. Another study of 132 colicky infants, 93 percent of parents reported improvement within one week of chiropractic care. The function of the spine can affect function of organs for digestion and elimination. This is mediated through the nervous system via a somatic-visceral reflex loop. A chiropractic evaluation of the infant’s spine is done from the head down to the pelvis. Decreased spinal motion is identified along with asymmetry in muscle tension. Infant spinal adjusting differs from an adult in that fingertip contacts are used with lighter thrusts for spinal motion correction to restore nervous system function. Small contacts for small parts and light pressures, something equivalent to what your closed eye can tolerate. Reasons for functional spinal disruptions include the birthing process, feeding and handling techniques, and chemical stress. Chiropractic care is an effective and efficient treatment for infantile colic and can open the path for a happy baby and parents. Dr. Lynn Dowswell, D.C. 705-325-0832

Inexpensive ways to

update a home now

Oftentimes, buying a home opens up a bottomless pit of opportunities for projects and improvements. While some homeowners engage in different repairs and fix-ups out of necessity, many others like to freshen up their spaces out of personal preference instead of need. But even the most well-intentioned projects can be waylaid if budgets are tight. What many homeowners may not realize is that there are many ways to make updates and changes to a home that do not require a major overhaul or a large price tag. The following are seven projects that won’t break the bank.

1. Move around furniture. You may be able to change the look of a room without spending any money. Interior designers know how to arrange furniture for maximum appeal, but the average homeowner can do it, too. Find a focal point in the room and angle the furniture toward it. Don’t make the focal point the television, however. Try changing the placement of chairs and sofas. Simply moving a curio cabinet from one corner to another may also make a difference. 2. Add lighting. Lighting at different levels in the room can create a vibrant impact. Many homeowners mistakenly put in a couple of table lamps and think that will be adequate. However, properly illuminating a room means varying the lighting to create different moods at different times. Plus, more light can make a room feel more welcoming.

5

3

6 7

3. Add new pillows or drapes. Changing a few aspects of a room can give it an entirely new look. If you want to add a splash of color but don’t know what to do, think about incorporating some new throw pillows or change the curtains. An accessory here and there in a bright color also can incorporate a new hue without it being overwhelming. 4. Change knobs or small accents. Give a room a new look by focusing on the small details. Switch out cabinet knobs for something updated and modern. Take inventory of wall outlets and light switches and think about selecting new ones that coordinate with your home décor.

5. Use plants. Empty corners or spots you’re not certain how to fill may benefit from a plant. Plants are inexpensive ways to add instant color and visual appeal to a room. Plus, having live plants can help improve indoor air by filtering out contaminants. A home with plants also feels more cozy. 6. Hang new wall art. It may be time to look at your photos and artwork and make a few adjustments. Finding new prints to hang could instantly change a room’s ambience. And you needn’t spend a lot of money on professional photography, either. Grab your camera and take a few close-up shots of flowers or take in a landscape scenery. Many of today’s home printers can produce professional-quality prints in minutes. 7. Try a new coat of paint. After you’ve exhausted other avenues, choosing a new paint color may be the new look you desire. Painting is one of the least expensive yet most dramatic methods of changing a home’s interior. With dozens of hues to choose from, and new apps that enable you to take snapshots of things in nature or in your life and match them up to a paint color, you will have scores of opportunities to explore fresh new colors for your home. When you get inspired to make improvements to the home but fear how much it may take out of your wallet, consider inexpensive tricks that can induce a big “wow” factor.

HOW TO

START A SMALL BUSINESS

Starting their own business is a dream for many men and women. Instead of reporting to a boss and following the particular hierarchy of a company, entrepreneurs can set their own rules and hours. But starting a business does not just involve putting an open-forbusiness sign in the window. It involves preparation to ensure the business succeeds and is in accordance with laws and guidelines set by the local government.

The first step in starting a business is to figure out what the business hopes to accomplish. It is a wise idea to draft a business plan that clearly states your goals and what you hope to accomplish on a daily basis. A business plan should include a listing of how the business will be marketed, who your expected competition will be, the names of your expected personnel, and the amount of available start-up capital at your disposal. A business plan is a good document to have and one

that is often necessary for prospective owners who hope to secure a small-business loan from a bank or private investors. Once the business plan has been developed, take advantage of any free training and counseling services that might be available. Such services offer strategies for a successful business, and established business owners might even participate by offering advice and answering questions. Learn from their successes and failures when establishing your own business. It’s also imperative that prospective business owners decide which type of legal entity their business will be. An attorney who specializes in business law can help you establish the legal structure that will be the most beneficial to you. You also will have to find a business location. While there are brick-andmortar businesses opening every day, a large number of new businesses begin on the Internet. It is very difficult to determine just how many online businesses there

are since the reach of the Internet is so vast. However, the low overhead of an online business and the increasing propensity for individuals and shoppers to spend time online makes the Internet an attractive venue for a business start-up. Small business owners also must register their businesses with their local governments. To do so, you will first need to apply for a business number from the The Canada Revenue Agency. This identification number is a 15character identifier of your business. Once you have this number, you will be able to open up bank accounts in the business’ name as well as register with your local government to pay payroll taxes and any sales tax necessary. If permits or licenses are necessary for your business, you will have to apply for those as well. Starting a business can be a rewarding venture and help individuals become their own boss. Not every business will become a success, but starting out on the right foot can help.

Watches

Q&A

My watch isn’t running. Did I overwind it? The answer to this question applies to both watches and clocks. There is simply NO SUCH THING as overwinding a watch. Mainsprings are designed to be wound up fully inside their barrels. Actually, a watch or clock should run at peak efficiency when completely wound. If you find that you cannot wind a watch any further and it does not run, something is wrong mechanically. Nine times out of ten it needs a complete overhaul. Conversely, if the mainspring is broken, it will keep winding and winding, never coming to the end. I believe the term overwound was coined by some self-made watchmaker who could not properly diagnose the problem with a repeat repair. By determining that the watch was overwound he put the blame squarely on his customer, and not on his lack of expertise. The term quickly became an icon of the watch repair industry, and even since the advent of quartz watches, it’s still one of the most common questions we hear. Do analog quartz watches ever need more than a battery change to keep them going? Yes! Quartz watches, like their mechanical counterparts, require an overhaul every four to five years. Once the oil dries out in a quartz watch, it should be cleaned out and re-oiled. Since the power supply is so light in a quartz watch, most exhibit problems as soon as the oil dries out. A mechanical watch will quite often run with no oil, until its parts are worn out, and then it will require more than an overhaul. (Like a car, if you run it without oil, you will have to get the motor rebuilt or replaced.) Every overhaul on a quartz watch includes complete disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, oiling & lubricating, reassembly, resetting the circuitry and supplying a new power cell. The public is always welcomed at our repair shop where they can see firsthand the intricacies of watchmaking. Rick and Aime Brownbill

ENERGY MEDICINE “Everything is energy and that is all there is to it... this is not philosophy. This is physics.” -Albert Einstein

healthy, happy, balanced life 27

The foundation of Energy Medicine to healthcare is that everything we see, sense or feel is made up of energy. The human body is composed of moving particles of energy that organize into patterns that influence how we function. Blockages in this flow can result in illness, creating an energy inbalance. We can heal our bodies by restoring energies that have become weak, disturbed or out of balance. For the past 12 years and with the use of Scientific Technology, BioEnergetic Intolerance Elimination (BIE), the GSR-120 Unit uses bio-energy principles, directing energy onto various acupuncture points on the body to create homeostasis (balance). This allows the body to heal itself naturally and without the use of needles or drugs. More and more people are seeking Energy Medicine for stressors in the body, which may include: food/environmental intolerances, fatigue, bloating, weight gain, digestive disorders, rashes, migraines........just to name a few. Testimonials in general are from clients stating that they are now able to eat foods with no adverse effects and free of symptoms when exposed to grass, trees and pollens. In a nutshell, with BIE, we first test for intolerances/stressors, then the GSR-120 unit helps the body recognize the stressors and the body is then able to heal itself in usually 1-4 treatments. Energy Medicine is non-invasive, holistic and does not interfere with conventional treatments. Linda Vance RpN, RMT, R.BIE

Cockroaches if you see one, there are 100s more!

Cockroaches, or “roaches” are fast breeding

winged insects that lay hundreds of eggs a year and carry salmonella and other bacteria. You don’t want this visitor in your home. They trigger asthmatic and allergic reactions. Roaches are very difficult to eliminate. If you see a roach during the day, you have hundreds! There are various ways to get rid of them but the most effective might be to hire a professional to spray and bait the areas. Most are nocturnal and scatter when the lights are turned on. The most common types in our area are the brownbanded, German, and wood roaches.

They live in wood piles, stumps and rain gutters and feed on decaying organic matter. They can enter your residence on firewood or through cracks and crevices. These roaches are attracted to light.

What They Look Like

Brown-banded roaches, 5/8” long, light to dark brown with 2 cream bands across the abdomen, are predominant in residential areas. They feed on wallpaper paste, glue on books stamps, cloth and paper. The Wonderful World of White From the mist-shrouded mountains of China comes a new and exciting tea - white tea. The Chinese have enjoyed white tea for over a thousand years, but only recently has the rest of the world become aware of this secret brew. It has been the privilege of the rich, and the downfall of an emperor. As I sit here sipping a delightful Pai Mu Tan flavored with tropical fruits and lychee I realize not only is it delicate and extremely refreshing, it also contains more healthy benefits than green or black tea. What makes it so special? Simply put, white tea is the least processed form of tea, made of beautiful silver buds and select leaves which have been steamed and dried. Because of its minimal processing, white tea contains more nutrients than its black or green cousins, making it the mightiest of the teas, the ultimate health tea. The brew has a light, delicate, slightly sweet flavor that sharpens the senses without overwhelming the tongue. Like green tea,

D

white tea is best brewed with pure water that is very hot, but not boiling and steeped for two to three minutes. It has less caffeine than black or green tea, and far less than coffee, making it an excellent choice for those wishing to reduce caffeine. Its supreme power is in preventing disease and disorder as it has the highest antioxidant levels. White tea protects against cancer, heart disease, and stroke, the leading causes of death in the industrial world, as well as numerous other conditions. It eases the symptoms of illness and promotes recovery. White tea strengthens the circulatory and immune systems as well as bones and teeth, and builds healthy skin. It is a superb tonic and one of nature’s great gifts. We encourage you to add it to your life. To your good health!

Laclie Pharmacy has invested in your health!

Due to Liberal government funding cuts to pharmacies in Ontario, some pharmacies have had to decrease expenses (staff) to remain viable which translates into longer wait times for prescriptions, automated phone lines, a lower quality of customer service and the possibility of prescription errors.. We have two pharmacists on duty and sufficient staff to service our clientele in a timely and efficient manner (usually 10 to 15 minutes for new or repeat prescriptions). We don’t have an answering machine or an automated phone service… you actually get to talk to a real person right away, honest!

Looking for a summer vacation?

Look to Alaska I know, I know. It’s minus 20 degrees outside and this article talks about Alaska. Why am I writing about Alaska now? It’s simple. This is the best time of year to capitalize on the super pricing for your Alaska cruise vacation this coming season. The deals available now will not get any better, making the decision to book simple and easy. Imagine yourself slipping into Glacier Bay and witnessing the glacier crack and roar before sending a mountain of ice crashing into the steel blue waters below. Glacier calving, as it’s called, is an experience that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

How about whales? These magnificent creatures are on every cruiser's wish list. Although an Alaska cruise can't promise whales breaching every moment, when these majestic mammals do burst out of the sea and sail happily skyward, you can bet the call goes out and everyone's on deck. I guarantee this vision of breaching whales will stay with you forever. Imagine, just as you awaken to another glorious sunrise or possibly while you are having breakfast a voice on the ship’s intercom beckons you with a cheery, "Good morning, humpback whales are breaching on the port and starboard.” Within moments, you can be on the deck, coffee

mug and cameras in hand, ready for the action! Alaska is the place where the waters from Asia converge with the Arctic currents delivering waters teaming with plankton, attracting tiny bait fish, which, in turn, attracts whales and other forms of wildlife. It's a classic Alaska scene. Rays of sunlight break over the majestic mountains and through the clouds, creating a glint on a fishing trawler in the distance. Between you and that stately old fishing boat, the glassy sea is alive with gulls scavenging, whales breaching, peek-a-boo porpoise and jumping salmon. So, before you start dreaming about some

southern clime, remember now is the time to start thinking Alaska and the ongoing antics of the whales, who set the water rumbling with repeated slaps of their pectoral fins. Perhaps it’s your time to determine if the whales are stunning the fish, sending out sounds to other whales, or just entertaining. They slap and slap repeatedly, like little kids playing red-rover, wanting you to come over. Then, in an instant, they dive, their t-shaped fluke slipping up high, before gracefully slipping beneath the blue waves. Perhaps it’s time to experience the thrill of a lifetime! David Shaw

travel tips

When traveling, men and women over the age of 50 should take several precautionary measures to ensure their trip is a safe one.

LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE

for the

Over 50 Jet Set For many people, the allure of travel never wears off. Be it a young person’s first trip to a foreign land or an older couple’s return to the place they spent their honeymoon, recreational travel remains a favorite hobby of people of all ages. Though travel appeals to people of all ages, it differs for people of all ages as well. The carefree “pack a bag and go” attitude shared by many a young traveler is not prudent for older travelers, who must take several safety precautions when traveling to ensure the trip will be safe as well as enjoyable. Here are some tips for older adults who still love the adventure of travel. Talk to your doctor in advance. If you have already made travel plans, consult your physician, who may suggest a full checkup, before your trip begins. Explain any travel plans, particularly which cities or countries you plan to visit and what your travel itinerary is. Different locales call for different precautionary measures, and your doctor can discuss with you specific measures to take depending on where you will be going. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists various required and recommended vaccines based on certain travel destinations. When speaking with your doctor, it’s also best to ask when to take medications. While this is less of a concern for travelers who are staying within their own time zones, it’s important for travelers changing time zones to learn if they should stick to their home-time-zone schedule or adapt it to the time zone they’ll be visiting. Even travelers who are

staying within their time zone should ask their physician if it’s best to take certain medications before or after a flight. • Pack all necessary medications in your carry-on bag. Most travelers have their own horror stories about losing checked baggage. For older men and women on medication, this can be especially troubling if their medications are packed in bags that were checked. When traveling, make sure all medications are in your carry-on bag to avoid losing medication while away from home. • Make a list. Before leaving home, make a list with your physician’s help and carry it with you at all times. This list should include: - any existing medical conditions - current treatment for those medical conditions, including the names of any medications you are on, the doses and how these medications are administered - the amount of the drug you need to take on the trip (this will be important should any medications be lost or damaged while traveling) • Take steps to avoid deep-vein thrombosis. Deep-vein thrombosis, or DVT, occurs when blood clots form in the veins. This typically takes place in the legs because of a lack of blood flow. Older adults are at risk of DVT when traveling because traveling often requires sitting in once place, such as on an airplane or train, for long periods of time. Research has indicated that compression stockings are effective at preventing DVT, and older travelers might want to consider such stockings, particularly if their travels require a long flight, drive or train ride. • Don’t transfer pills to new containers. Veteran travelers know getting through Customs is no joy ride. It’s even less enjoyable for men and women who must take prescription medications with them. To make your trip through Customs as stress-free as possible, keep all medications in their original containers.
