When the opportunity arises, performing with local talent Jim Cronk never disappoints. Performing a little bit country, a little bit rock “n” roll, Krista jokingly admits they are a real life Donny and Marie!

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes...It’s all About You! A

s an observer at Fall Fashion Week in NYC, shoe fashions this fall are varied, leaning to the exotic in both textures and trends. Geometric designs and patterns are in vogue as well as furry/hairy shoes...yes, very new, very “on trend” for fall. Reptile prints and patterns are all the rage, fur shoes, yes, fur shoes, are new and hot for fall! Fendi offers cutting edge designers, with a total line of fur shoes and boots for you. Christian Dior is embracing the clear, see-thru heels in a more classic height as opposed to the last few years of stilettos. Chunky low heels are becoming cool and, well, actually more practical for all day wear as most of us are off to the office on a regular basis. But if boots are your thing, knee high

lace up and gladiator style boots are for you. Pair them with Bo-ho style or couture designs...it all works. So, “buckle-up” and strut your favourite new fall footwear. Even the three-quarter boots with metal buckles and chunky heels are very cool. They look great paired with a pencil or flouncy-type skirt...they do! Colours range from the predictable shades of black, brown and, of course, grey, but do not ignore magenta, deep teals, greens and purples...all hot for fall footwear. Make your basic black dress “pop” with shoes in a total bright pattern and colour. Be bold! Just go for it! Fashion is fun! With so many choices in styles, colour and textures you cannot miss this fall. It’s “solely” up to you! Shelley Weir, Associate Publisher

Healthy ways to handle stress Daily exercise is a healthy and effective way to cope with stress.

S

tress affects people of all ages. The symptoms of stress can be extremely unpleasant, as participants in a study released earlier this year by the Statistic Brain Research Institute and the American Institute of Stress who reported experiencing physical symptoms of stress admitted to feeling fatigue, headache, upset stomach, and muscle tension, among other things. Among those who reported feeling physical symptoms of stress, 77 per cent admitted to feeling those symptoms regularly, citing job pressure and money as the primary causes of their stress. How men and women handle stress can impact both their immediate and long-term health, as stress has been linked to a host of problems and ailments, including sleep dysfunction and heart disease. Many people cope with stress in unhealthy ways, which may only exacerbate the effects of stress on the body. Certain methods of

handling stress may work for some people but not others, but the following are a few healthy ways to combat stress. Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption. Many adults turn to alcohol at the end of a stressful day, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that relying on alcohol to cope with stress may only create more problems down the road, and those problems will only increase your stress levels. In addition, alcohol and caffeine can aggravate anxiety and trigger panic attacks. Rely on a support network. Coworkers, family and friends have stressful days, too, and such confidantes can help you handle stress in healthy ways. The ADAA recommends men and women dealing with stress let their support circle know how they can help relieve stress. Many people simply need to talk to someone after a stressful day, which can feel like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders. Let your support network know you’re there for them when they experience stress as well. Get daily exercise. Exercise pays a host of dividends, not the least of which is relieving stress. At the end of a stressful day, get some

exercise instead of pouring yourself a drink or indulging in an unhealthy meal. When the body is physically active, the brain secretes endorphins, which are neurotransmitters that make you feel good. Regular exercise also helps you get a fuller, deeper sleep, which can be disrupted by stress. Eat a healthy diet. Diet also can affect how your body handles stress. Certain foods can tame stress. For example, oatmeal can boost levels of a calming chemical known as serotonin in your brain. That calming effect can make it easier to cope with stress. Other foods may help strengthen the immune system. Vitamin C, for instance, may help curb levels of stress hormones such as cortisol while simultaneously strengthening the immune system. Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish such as salmon and tuna, may help prevent surges in stress hormones while also protecting against heart disease and depression, two serious conditions that studies have linked to elevated stress levels. Healthy ways to handle stress can help men and women who are stressed out ensure that stress is not compromising both their immediate and long-term health.

Things To Consider Before Getting a Dog may want to avoid short-nosed breeds in favour of dogs that are better equipped to handle the heat. Age of the dog: Many prospective dog owners want to adopt puppies so they can be with their new best friends throughout the dogs’ lives. But puppies can be difficult to house train, and that training takes a combination of time, money and patience. If you are not ready to commit all three to house train your dog, then consider adopting

D

ogs are wonderful companion animals, providing their owners with loyal friends who are seemingly always up for walks or games of frisbee. Dog ownership is rewarding, but it’s also a significant responsibility. Before adopting a shelter dog or buying from a breeder, prospective dog owners should consider a host of factors to determine if now is the best time for them to welcome a new four-legged friend into the family. Time: Some pets do not require their owners to commit much of their time. For example, fish and bird owners don’t need to take their pets outside for walks or bathroom breaks, making them ideal pets for men and women who want a pet but don’t have the time to devote to caring for more needy animals. Men and women considering getting a dog should make an honest assessment of how much time they have to take care of their animals. Dogs don’t just need their owners to take them for walks and let them into the backyard to go to the bathroom. Dogs are social animals and need their owners to spend time with them every day. Men and women with especially hectic schedules may want to delay getting a dog until they can free up more time in their days. Money: Owning a dog requires a considerable financial commitment, one that extends far beyond the adoption fees or prices established by private breeders. Dogs need food, comfortable shelter, toys, and medical care, which can be extensive should dogs get sick. Some dog owners buy pet insurance to offset the cost of veterinarian visits,

while others simply pay out of pocket when their dogs have medical expenses. Dogs tend to hide physical problems from their owners, which is why routine veterinary visits are so important. Many veterinarians recommend at least annual visits for dogs under the age of 10 and visits every six months for dogs 10 and older. Men and women should make sure they can afford those visits before bringing a dog into their lives. Climate: Where you live should also influence your decision to get a dog. Though climate won’t necessarily prevent you from adopting a dog, you may want to avoid adopting certain breeds of dogs depending on where you live. For example, short-nosed breeds, including English bulldogs and pugs, are highly susceptible to heat stroke, as their shorter airways give them less of a chance to cool the air they draw into their bodies. Men and women living in especially warm climates

an older dog that is already house trained. Family members or roommates: Dogs make wonderful additions to a home, but not everyone is cut out for living with dogs. If you live with other people, be it family members or roommates, it’s best to consult with them before bringing a dog home, as dogs can change the dynamic of any living arrangement. In addition, you may unknowingly live with someone who has a dog allergy and cannot cohabitate with a dog. Consult the people you live with before bringing a dog home, and only do so if you have their blessing. Dogs are great companions who can greatly improve their owners’ quality of life. But dog ownership is not for everyone, and prospective dog owners should first consider a host of factors before bringing dogs into their homes.

Finding the right family car

P

arents have a host of options at their disposal when the time comes to buy new cars for their families. While dad might have long dreamed of driving the fastest sports car on the market, such a vehicle does not make much practical sense when car trips figure to be made with kids in tow. Finding the right car for a family depends on a host of factors, as what makes a good vehicle for one family will not always make a great choice for another. When choosing a car for their families, parents can consider the following factors to ensure must be considered before buying a new car. they choose the vehicles that best suit their needs. Family cars are rarely limited to getting mom or dad to and from work and for trips to the

grocery store. Today’s kids are more active than ever before, and chances are their schedules are as packed as their parents. Consider the many chauffeuring trips you will have to make in the years to come, and choose a car that is equipped to handle those trips. Parents who double as soccer coaches may benefit from buying minivans that can easily store all that sports equipment, while those whose children participate in activities that take them far and wide may want a car that’s especially fuel efficient.

Comfort

Luxury vehicles may provide the most comfortable ride, but parents who are not yet ready to go that route need not sacrifice comfort in favour of practicality. Families spend lots of time in their vehicles, and summer vacations or winter holiday road trips are that much more enjoyable when everyone is riding in comfort. While comfort might not be the foremost priority for parents, it is something to consider when buying new family vehicles.

Redefine a space with an interior decorator’s help

T

hough it may seem like interior decorators are a luxury reserved exclusively for the rich and famous, interior decorators work with people of all budgets. Homeowners sometimes wrestle with the practicality of hiring a decorator, wondering why they should spend the money when they can do the work themselves. But just like homeowners may hire professional electricians or landscapers, hiring a professional interior decorator can ensure the job is done right, within budget and completed within a reasonable amount of time. Those who have already invested quite a bit of money into their homes but want to add some

finishing touches would be wise to hire interior decorators or designers. Homeowners often have no idea where to begin when attempting to establish flow from room to room in their homes. Decorators can help homeowners tailor the interiors of their homes to the homes produce the desired vibe. Hiring a designer can help a person avoid making potentially costly design errors. An aesthetically appealing house also can increase the home’s value, setting a property above others in terms of appeal. Even though the designer will charge a fee, the investment may be well worth the expense when the room is done right the first time. Interior decorators have numerous resources at their disposal. Fine tuned to the world of design, they understand which trends will come and go and also which design ideas have staying power. In addition, decorators will be in touch with vendors in the industry, connecting homeowners with the best of the best in terms of providing furniture, housewares, photography, and additional special touches that help make a house a home. In addition to expertise and resources, interior decorators have eyes that will be trained on things homeowners may not have noticed or even realized can be done. A designer may envision removing a room to create more space or knocking a wall down to let more natural light into a room. Designers and decorators are trained to think differently and spatially to achieve concepts homeowners may never have envisioned for themselves. They can help tell stories through design and improve spaces immeasurably.

The problem with hard water H

ome ownership opens people’s eyes to many new experiences, even requiring homeowners to familiarize themselves with certain things they never encountered as renters. Homeowners become novice plumbers, electricians, horticulturists, and even chemists as they wade through the projects and repairs involved with owning a home. Outside of high school chemistry class, you may never have given thought to water composition and how it changes. However, once you become a homeowner, you may have to pay special attention to the type of water bubbling out of your faucets. Hard water is a common concern, and it can affect appliances and other parts of the home.

What is hard water?

Hard water affects about 85 per cent of all of us. Although not harmful to human health, hard water can impact one’s daily life in other ways. Hard water is formed when water moves through soil and rock. It dissolves very small amounts of minerals and holds them in a solution. Calcium and magnesium are the most common minerals to turn water “hard.” The more magnesium and calcium water dissolves, the harder it becomes.

From nuisance to damaging

Hard water can not only be a minor headache, but also something more serious. Hard water can interfere with various cleaning tasks and also personal grooming. Clothes washed in hard water may not be fully clean and may appear dingy. Hard water can cause a film on surfaces, such as bath tiles and tubs. Some people find that their hair and skin can appear dull and sticky due to hard water. Hard water can have other

LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE

effects, too. Over time, the water can deposit minerals on the inside of pipes, reducing water flow. If these deposits grow thick, you may have a plumbing issue on your hands. Furthermore, mineral deposits can harm appliances, such as water heaters, washing machines and dishwashers. Eventually, hard water may render these appliances ineffective, and they will need to be replaced.

Treatment options

Considering hard water is such a common concern, a number of treatment options exist. The main types of water-softening systems use either a packaged water softener or a mechanical water-softening unit. Packaged water softeners are chemicals that bond with the calcium and magnesium ions in the water so that they cannot interfere with cleaning efficiency. These chemicals fall into two categories: precipitating and nonprecipitating. Precipitating softeners are borax and washing soda and can affect pH levels of water and make water cloudy. Nonprecipitating softeners use phosphates. Alkalinity won’t be increased, and usually there is no cloudiness or buildup. These products are typically added to laundry loads and the like and are not recommended for drinking water. Mechanical water-softening systems are hooked up directly to the plumbing of the house. They are ion-exchange systems that will add salt to the water. Although it can be safe to drink, softened water may not be recommended for those who are on low-sodium diets. Hard water is a problem many homeowners have to face. It can affect a home’s appliances’ performance and cleaning abilities. Water hardness can be managed, and it is best to consult with an expert water-softening system manufacturer about your options.

oes the time of year make a difference when it comes to selling your house? The short answer is yes. It’s no secret that spring is the busiest time of the year in real estate. The spring market generally spans from March to May and thousands of sales take place in these busy months. Even though spring could be considered the best time to sell, the fact is, there are many reasons why people buy houses in every season. Weekend Renovation Projects

S

ome home renovation projects require the expertise of professionals, but there also are many ways for homeowners to improve their homes without hiring a pro or spending too much money. The following are a handful of DIY renovation projects homeowners can tackle in a typical weekend.

Closet conversion

Ample closet space is a big plus for home buyers, but upon moving into a new home, many homeowners may find they don’t need as much closet space as they initially thought. Guest room walk-in closets, in particular, may prove to be underutilized resources. Such closets often come with built-in shelving, and therefore, they make ideal spaces to convert to mini home offices or study areas for kids. Installing an extra shelf to serve as a desk area for remote working or homework stations won’t take up much of a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, and before you know it, you will have a fully functioning workspace.

Accent wall

Accent walls can liven up a room by breaking the colour pattern of the walls in the room. Accent walls also can be used to divert attention on a particular design element in a room, such as a painting or an elaborate wall furnishing. Painting an accent wall won’t take very long, but such a

project can give a room an entirely new look and feel.

Driveway

If weather permits, repaving an asphalt driveway can be an ideal weekend project, especially if an existing driveway has endured its fair share of wear and tear. Many driveways can be paved anew in a single day, but larger driveways or those that have endured an extraordinary amount of wear and tear may take a couple of days.

or apartment dwellers’ needs. If your home or apartment falls into the latter category, adding some shelving or finding some new furniture that can serve double duty as storage areas is a weekend project that can help clear up some space. Purchase some wood shelving from a local furniture retailer to mimic the look of traditional built-ins or replace existing single-use furniture with newer items capable of serving multiple functions, including storage.

Art

If the rooms and hallways in your home are bare or in need of new looks but your budget is tight, try your hand at spicing things up by creating some of your own paintings. Parents can encourage kids to create their own colorful Storage and shelving masterpieces. Frame the finished works and hang Much like some homes come with an abundance them on the wall and enjoy your inexpensive and of storage areas, others fall short of homeowners’ homemade “art gallery.”

How to get a better night’s sleep

T

he National Sleep Foundation notes that adults between the ages of 26 and 64 need an average of seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Such a sleep schedule may be ideal, but many adults juggling work and family find it difficult to get seven hours of sleep per night, much less eight or nine. While there may not be any way for adults to get more sack time at night, there are ways for men and women to get a better night’s rest so they can approach each day with as much energy as possible. Stick to a schedule. Keeping a sporadic sleeping schedule can make it difficult to get the kind of restorative sleep that can help you maintain adequate energy levels throughout the day. To ensure you get a better night’s sleep, go to sleep at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each day. Try to stay true to your sleep schedule on weekends, resisting the temptation to sleep in later or stay up late on Friday and Saturday nights. Nap effectively. Men and women who have the time to sneak in a nap may find that napping is a more effective way to make up for inadequate sleep than sleeping in late in the morning. Effective napping allows men and women to recharge without affecting their ability to fall

asleep at night. Napping in the early afternoon and keeping nap time to between 20 and 30 minutes can provide the energy boost you need and help you make it through the after-dinner hours without feeling drowsy. Such drowsiness can lead to post-dinner periods of dozing that can make it difficult to fall asleep come bedtime. Adopt a nighttime ritual. The NSF notes that a relaxing nighttime ritual that is noticeably different from the hustle and bustle of the rest of your day can help your body adjust for sleep, increasing the chance that you will get a more restful night’s sleep. Relaxing ways to unwind before climbing into to bed to fall asleep including reading a book, listening to calming music or taking a warm bath. Once you find something that works, stick with it. Find time to exercise. Studies have shown that men and women who exercise regularly benefit from more restful nights’ sleep. Finding the right time to exercise is essential, as many people find that exercising right before bed elevates their heart and stimulates their body in ways that make it difficult to fall asleep. Exercising in the early morning can provide more energy throughout the day, and come bedtime your body might be more ready to fall asleep. However, if you find yourself exercising at the expense of your sleep,

try to find another time to get your workout in. Ensure your bedroom is sleep friendly. The NSF recommends maintaining a relatively cool temperature between 60 and 67 F in your bedroom for sleeping. In addition, eliminate any potential distractions, such as light and noise, that can negatively affect your ability to fall asleep. Humidifiers, eye shades or even machines that generate white noise can effectively counter any distractions that you cannot get rid of on your own. A good night’s sleep is essential to human health. Men and women struggling to get adequate, beneficial sleep can employ a host of strategies to improve their quality of life.

Questions to ask when looking for an after-shool program

M

any of today’s working professionals grew up in single income households where only one of their parents went to work each day. But that once common dynamic is now largely a thing of the past, as economic necessity has driven both moms and dads to continue their careers even after they have had children. That reality has led many working parents to lean heavily on after-school programs to serve as safe havens that provide structure for their kids while mom and dad are still at work. Choosing an after-school program is a decision many parents find difficult, but there are some questions parents can ask during their searches for programs that should make those decisions easier.

Get your Kids more physically active

T

oday’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day. Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active. Choose the right activity. Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch. Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen . Join in the fun. Parents can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family. Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

Food storage and safety tips

B

uying in bulk can reduce trips to the supermarket and save you money. When buying in bulk, you can cook perishable foods all at once or store foods for later use. When taking the latter approach, there are certain storage and safety tips home cooks can take to ensure their food stays fresh and safe to eat.

Be prepared

Before buying a large amount of food, ensure that your refrigerator and freezer are in good working order. Use a food appliance thermometer to get an accurate reading of the internal temperature of the freezer and refrigerator. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends refrigerators be kept at or below 40 F (5 C), and the freezer at or below zero (-18 C). A refrigerator or freezer that is too warm can cause the growth of unhealthy bacteria in stored foods and decrease the shelf life of stored items. Purchase freezer-safe plastic storage bags or containers to hold divided food. Also have a permanent marker handy to label containers with the date and type of food enclosed.

Wash later

Wash produce and fresh foods prior to eating. If items are washed before they are stored, the moisture trapped can accelerate spoilage. Lettuce and other leafy vegetables are the exception. Wash these items and drain thoroughly. Afterward, store in a sealed bag with paper towels, which will absorb excess moisture.

Separate meat and poultry

Individual pieces of meat and poultry should be separated before freezing, as this makes it easier to take out the right portions when defrosting for meals. Small, thin packages will freeze faster and more evenly than other types of containers. They will also defrost quickly for use later. Keep hands clean when handling

raw foods by placing one hand in a small plastic sandwich bag to grab the pieces of chicken or meat. Then turn the bag inside out on your hand and the piece of food. Place these wrapped pieces into freezer-safe bags. The double layer of protection will safeguard against ice crystals and freezer burn, which can affect flavour. Bulk ground beef or turkey purchases are another popular buy. Place in a large storage bag and flatten the ground meat as much as possible. Use a spatula to indent the meat almost through to the bottom in a grid pattern. This perforation allows you to access as much of the frozen meat as necessary.

Defrosting

The USDA advises to defrost foods properly to avoid foodborne illnesses. Freezing suspends bacteria trapped in food indefinitely. Improper defrosting practices can cause that bacteria to grow. If the food is not cooked thoroughly, illness can result. Plan ahead to defrost foods in the refrigerator. It can take up to a day for this method of thawing, so plan meals well in advance. A cold-water bath also can defrost foods. They should be in a leak-proof package, and the bag should be submerged in cold tap water, changing the water every 30 minutes so it continues to thaw. Small packages of meat, poultry or seafood — about a pound — may thaw in an hour or less. Microwaves also have a defrost setting. Just remember to cook foods immediately afterward if you defrost them in a microwave.

Vegetables With a Minty Lamb & Rice Stuffing Serves 4 to 6

Stuffing

½ cup basmati rice, soaked in water for 1 hour 8 ounces lean ground lamb 2 tablespoons minced mint leaves 1 tablespoon minced cilantro leaves 1 tablespoon lime juice 1 teaspoon finely grated garlic (about 2 large cloves) 1 teaspoon finely grated fresh ginger (about 2-inch piece) 1½ teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon canola oil 1 teaspoon sugar ½ teaspoon ground turmeric ½ teaspoon cumin seeds, finely ground

Vegetables 1 2 2 2

large green zucchini small, firm slightly unripe tomatoes small red bell peppers small Indian, Italian or Japanese eggplants

Dressing

½ cup water 2 tablespoons canola oil 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 teaspoon sugar ½ teaspoon salt Preheat the oven to 400 F.

To make the stuffing: Drain the rice and mix it with the lamb, mint, cilantro, lime juice, garlic, ginger, salt, oil, sugar, turmeric, and cumin. Use your fingers to break up the lamb and thoroughly mix everything together. To prepare the vegetables: All the vegetables should be at room temperature. Slice off the ends of cut the zucchini horizontally into pieces about 3 inches long. With a thin, sharp paring knife, carefully core each piece all the way through, making a thinwalled, hollow pipe. Carefully take the tops off the tomatoes and bell peppers. Discard the seeds and pulp from the tomatoes. Cut out the seeds and white membrane from the peppers. Retain the stems of the eggplant and make an “X” on the bottom end of each by cutting two lengthwise intersecting lines without slicing all the way through to the stem end. To make the dressing: Whisk together the water, oil, lime juice, sugar, and salt. Carefully stuff each vegetable only 3⁄4 full with the stuffing, as the rice will expand when cooked. Place the vegetables in a single layer in a large, lightly oiled baking dish. Drizzle the dressing evenly over the vegetables, taking care to see that an inordinate amount does not fall into the tomatoes and bell peppers. Cover the dish with a lid or aluminum foil and bake, covered, until the rice and vegetables are tender, about 1 hour. Uncover the dish and place it under the broiler for a few minutes to brown just the edges of the vegetables. Serve warm.

Destination

Wedding Planning Pointers

D

estination weddings continue to be popular among couples tying the knot. In its annual Real Weddings Survey, multiplatform wedding resource The Knot found that 24 per cent of the nearly 16,000 brides and grooms who participated in the survey and married in 2014 had destination weddings, the second year in a row nearly a quarter of all survey respondents acknowledged taking their vows away from home. Destination weddings often benefit from picturesque landscapes and idyllic backdrops during ceremonies and bridal party photo sessions. But there are some things couples should consider before they decide to tie the knot in a faraway land.

Paperwork

Whether you’re getting married in your current country of residence or overseas, you must allow time for paperwork to be processed. Wedding license applications may not be processed as quickly on a remote island as they are in a major Canadian city, so be sure to get a firm grasp of the application process and its timeline before opting for a destination wedding. In addition, some countries may mandate that personal documents, such as birth certificates, be translated into the official language of the country where couples will be tying the knot, and such translations typically must be conducted by approved translators.

Requirements

Some countries may allow couples to tie the knot the moment they step off their planes, while others have residency requirements that can be

as long as several weeks. If your budget is tight or your work schedule is inflexible, then try to find a country that does not require you to spend several weeks within its borders before you can legally marry there.

Wedding Planner

Many couples who choose destination weddings ultimately get married at a resort, and such resorts typically have wedding planners or coordinators who are well versed in local laws and customs governing wedding ceremonies. Such professionals can make it easier for couples to navigate the sometimes complex laws regulating destination weddings, and their services are often included in resort wedding packages. If no such service is included in the hotel package, consider hiring a local wedding planner to make the process go more smoothly.

Engagement Period

Couples hoping to have a destination wedding should expect to have a longer engagement than those getting married closer to home. The longer engagement period gives guests more time to arrange for travel and couples more time to

navigate the requirements of getting married overseas. When sending save-the-date cards to guests, include brochures on the area where you will be getting married so guests can see what the area has to offer.

Buy Local

Many couples choose destination weddings because they are attracted to the local culture in a given place. When planning your destination wedding, embrace this culture by choosing local foods, flowers and entertainment. Not only will it make your big night more unique and authentic, but also buying local will save you money and benefit the environment at the same time. Destination weddings are significant undertakings, but couples can ease some of their workloads by taking certain steps to make the planning process go more smoothly.
